Journey to the West (1986 TV Series)

It started filming in 1982, but was released in 1986. That is why some sources refer to it as the 1982 TV Series.

The director Yang Jie received the task from the Chinese officials to film the classic novel Journey to the West , which is one of China's Four Great Classical Novels. Though the one she really wanted to film is another one from the four great novels called Dream of the Red Chamber , director Yang Jie accepted the task and organized a film crew by 1982. The filming process was extremely tough at that time. Because of the nature of the original work as a mythology, the crew needs to use a lot of special effects in the show. However, with limitation in techniques and experience, making special effects costs the team great amount of money and causes considerable danger at the same time. Almost all of the main casts had experience of falling down when they were hung by the wires several meters above the ground. Despite the difficult conditions, the team managed to finish the first season after 6 years of filming. It was piloted on CCTV in 1986, and all of the 25 episodes were released by 1988. The show was an immediate success after being broadcasted. The viewership rate reached 89.4% in 1987. [1]

In 1998, the crew gathered again to film the rest of the stories from the original work that were not covered in the first season. Since there wasn't a plan to film a second season, the story was already finished by the end of first season. As a result, the crew adapted the uncovered story into flashbacks of the protagonists after they returned to the Tang Empire from the Vulture Peak. The second season consists of 16 episodes and was broadcasted on CCTV in 2000.

Main Plot [ ]

One day, a monkey is born from a stone nourished by the essence of the world. He becomes an Immortal after being named as Sun Wukong  and practicing Taoist for hundred of years. He makes his name of  Great Sage Equal to Heaven (齐天大圣) after starting a war against the Heavens . The Monkey causes great trouble in the Heaven, as almost no one can matches his power. When he finally threats the Jade Emperor  to give up his position, the Buddha arrives and manages to trap him under a mountain for five hundred years. 

Five hundred years later, a monk called Tang Sanzang in the Tang Empire sets out to bring back Buddhist scriptures from the Vulture Peak in India under the instruction of  Guanyin Bodhisattva . He releases the Monkey from the mountain, make him his disciple and meets the other three disciples during the journey. As a team, they experiences 81 tribulations, defeats relentless demons and manages to receive the scriptures from the Buddha at the end of the journey. They then returns to the Tang Empire, spreads the thoughts from the scriptures and tells the emperor about their experiences in the whole trip.

Still unbeaten: Journey to the West (1986, TV series)

Journey to the West is one of the four great novels of Chinese literature. Over the years, countless TV-adaptations have been produced. Everything from decent to mediocre to barely watchable.

One of the oldest, the 1986 version , was so strong and convincing that it achieved classical status. It seems almost all mainland Chinese people grew up watching this CCTV-production of Journey to the West and it still can be seen on Chinese television today. (It’s one of those series Chinese national television just keeps repeating.)

From today’s perspective, the special effects are obsolete and bizarre. And the story evolves much slower and more long-winded than Netflix addicts are used to nowadays. The striking thing though: China and its film industry have developed so much since then, but they never quite managed to top the 1986-series! In terms of story line, costumes, portrayal of characters, it still is considered the most original and authentic rendition of the story. As a matter of fact, some of the newer adaptations are hardly more than imitations that fail to bring convincing interpretations to the plot and characters.

Key to understanding China

Most people who are serious about learning Chinese, watch or read Journey to the West at some point. There is just no way around it. The legendary journey of the Buddhist monk and his apprentices somehow is fundamental to Chinese culture. The adventures of the Monkey King have left their traces in the Chinese language. Journey to the West is a key to understanding China, although it leaves you with many new questions. About Chinese mythology and religions for example.

Reading Journey to the West

I wrote about Pleco’s e-book Journey to the West a while back. The online dictionary offers its own graded reader series for the Chinese Classics, suitable for non-native speakers. Pleco’s Journey to the West is an abridged version for intermediate learners which stays true to the original as far as I can tell. Watching the series and reading the story with its additional notes on places, monsters and demons together can be very helpful. If you have the time, that is! The story is meant for HSK 4 or 5 learners.

Countless other adaptations have been made. I can’t guarantee this list is complete. It doesn’t include cartoons for example. Unfortunately, most of them lack quality. I found only one exception.

This movie “齐天大圣” tells the story of Sun Wukong who escaped from Wuzhishan and brought his oppressed demon brothers back to the Heavenly Palace. It has a horrible score on the Chinese movie database Douban , so it can’t be much good.

Thank you for this! I am just now exploring the story through Arthur Waley’s “Monkey” and the 1986 series. What did you think of A Korean Odyssey, the kdrama version from a few years ago? I thought Lee Seung Gi was a wonderful Great Sage.

Thanks for letting me know about the Korean series! Haven’t watched it, but I’m curious to see their take on it. Waley’s abridged version is still one of the best, I guess.

What do you think of the English subtitle translation of Journey to the West(1986)? too poor, right?

Hard for me to judge, it’s definitely not the most modern translation. Can you give some examples of poor translations?

While no doubt extremely inferior, I became interested in Monkey from the Japanese version that ran from 1978 to 1980. I was in the Navy from 1976 to 1984 and Yokouska Japan was a frequent port. Despite not being able to speak or read the language I very quickly became a fan of Anime and Manga. I still have 50 comics I can’t read. And also I watched many Japanese programs, including Monkey and early Super Sentai! I fell in love with both because they could still be followed. I especially loved Monkey as he not only used martial arts, which I was also into, but he used magic! Well, despite the dated special effects I had to learn more about this guy. And I wish I had seen the 1986 Chinese version as many people have told me it’s even better. I have been searching the internet for years now trying to find Region 1 DVDs of either series.

‘Journey to the West’ (西游记) 1986: The Unsurpassed Classic

西游记 , or Journey to the West , talks about how the monk, Tang San Zang, along with his three disciples, had to overcome a total of 81 trials on their pilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures. During the Spring Festival of 1986, the first 11 episodes of this classic series were aired through the Chinese government’s national television. As soon as they were aired, the show measured an astounding viewership of 89.4%. It was the first of its kind, with no prior adaptations they could use as reference. 

The show’s director, Yang Jie, was determined to portray the original story to the best of her abilities. To show all 81 trials within a 30-hour series was certainly a challenge, so Yang decided to pick out only certain stories from the original novel that were enough to encapsulate the essence of Journey to the West . Each episode had an individual story as they tried to avoid repetitive plots, but Yang ensured that they were still connected together.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of all the producers and casts, the story was practically brought to life. Hundreds of characters that were only described with mere words in the novel were given their own souls and personalities in this TV adaptation.

However, what many people are probably not aware of is that the process of producing this classic was a journey in itself, with its own “81 trials”. Over the 6 years spent in producing the first 25 episodes, from 1982–1988, one camera and one video tape recorder were all they ever had.

In the era when special effects were yet to be known in China, the crew had only heard of the blue screen. They tried filming with trampolines and skateboards in front of blue cloth, and eventually had to fly to Hong Kong in order to learn the wire stunt, which was needed for their characters to fly. But even so, with special effects that pale in comparison to the ones today, this show remains unsurpassed in the history of Chinese television. In the hearts of many, no remake ever done was able to quite measure up to the impacts of this version.

Yang believed that Journey to the West is about a journey. Hence filming only in the studio was not enough. For that, she led a team of six on a two month journey to explore over 60 places across China, where they eventually filmed at. 

Due to budget constraints, Yang was forced to cut down 5 episodes from the original plan of 30 in 1988. Fortunately, in 1998, she was finally given another chance, with a much bigger budget funded by the government to fulfill her dream of filming the remaining episodes that they were previously unable to finish.

This Spring Festival marks the 35th anniversary of this masterpiece. It has been replayed on TV for more than 3000 times since its debut, and it continues to be played during the summer and winter breaks of China even until today.

Journey to the West Review: Book

Today, we recommend to you, a TV show called Journey to the West (西游记 xīyóu jì).

It is based on the fictional book of the same name written by Wu Cheng’en (吴承恩 Wú Chéng’ēn).

It is a romantic novel full of magic, set in ancient China.

The novel is rich in imagination, boldly combining the images of gods and deities with people, creating a series of unforgettable artistic shapes.

The novel is one of the great Chinese classics .

The book is very difficult to read because it is written in Ancient Chinese and is also very long with a massive 100 chapters!

Instead, the series is very short, colourful and the language is simple, concise and lively.

Journey to the West Review: Where to Watch

The series is made up of 25 episodes and each last episode lasts around 42 minutes.

It can be watched for free on Youtube or on Youku .

In China we are really familiar with this story because when we were students, Journey to the West would always be on TV during our summer and winter holidays.

We love this TV show because we always imagine we are the main character Sunwukong ( 孙悟空 sūnwùkōng) also known as the Monkey King.

Whenever we are faced with something unfair, we just fight against it the same as him in the TV show.

This is expressed by the author:

“It is so unfair during that society, so he just imagined that there is a society in which he can be brave enough to be honest and fight against injustice .”

So, they have to fight with them and ask other people to help.

Foremost, the story goes like this…

Once upon a time, there was a rock, this rock is very old and after many many years, she gives birth to a monkey.

This monkey calls himself The Monkey King ( 美猴王 Měi hóu wáng).

This monkey wants to live forever so he journeys abroad to learn from his teacher.

He is given the name Sun Wukong ( 孙悟空 sūnwùkōng ).

So, Sun is his surname and Wukong is his first name.

He is so smart that he learnt a lot from his teacher, two of which are called Jin Douyun ( 筋斗云 Jīndǒu yún), which means ‘one who can fly a thousand miles in the air by just one jump’ .

The other is Qishi’erbian ( 七十二变 Qīshí’èr biàn), which means ‘he who can just take one hair from his head and change this to whatever he wants’ .

His teacher knows that in the future this student will cause a big disaster, so he is expelled and told to go back to where he comes from.

He is warned to never tell people who his teacher is.

Journey to the West Review: Monkey King and The Government

The Monkey King feels he is the best after learning so many things and calls himself Qitian Dasheng ( 齐天大圣 Qí tiān dà shèng) which means ‘Great Sage Equal to Heaven’ .

He steals a stick ( 金箍棒 Jīn gū bàng) from a dragon King and uses this as his tool to make his powers grow.

Many people are angry at this and go to the Emperor ( 玉帝 Yù dì) , to complain.

First of all, the Emperor tries to trick the Monkey King by giving him an official position.

But soon the Monkey King realises the position is too small so refuses.

Then the Emperor gives him the position of taking care of the peach tree.

So, the Monkey Kings loves the peaches and eats almost all of them.

The Emperor is angry and puts him in an Alchemy Furnace to punish him.

Then, the Monkey King escapes and has a big fight with the government officials.

The Emperor has no way to save the government, but asks for help from Rulai Buddha.

Rulai Buddha traps the Monkey King under a mountain, sealing it for 500 years.

Journey to the West Review: Tang Seng

Tang Seng ( 唐僧 Tángsēng), also famous as Tang Sanzang, was turned into a Golden Cicada and is the second student of Rulai Buddha.

He rescues the Monkey King and takes him as his first student.

Along the road, he meets his second student Zhu Bajie ( 猪八戒 Zhūbājiè ), a pig who is very lazy and greedy.

He also then meets his third student Monk Sha ( 沙僧 Shā sēng) and he acquires a horse to ride.

They journey west to seek the Buddhist scriptures and encounter 81 hardships and difficulties. After overcoming all of these they are able to obtain the Buddhist scriptures.

One of the Monkey King’s most famous lines is “Here I come!” ( 俺老孙来也 Ǎn lǎo sūn lái yě).

Monk (沙僧 Shā sēng) almost only has one line in the entire TV show which is “Brother, Master is caught by the monster.” ( 大师兄，师父被妖怪抓走啦 Dà shīxiōng, shīfu bèi yāoguài zhuā zǒu la.)

Drama review: journey to the west 1986.

Thanks for the write up! I'm a fan of JTTW 1986. I have no idea the hardship endured and passion shown by these directors & actors behind the scene. This makes me appreciate the series even more. :)))

This is the best and most interesting and informative review of the beloved classic tv show of my childhood. Thank you! When I watched it I truly believed Sun Wukong was real.xD I've watched some other versions and adaptions, but nothing comes close to this adaption and Liu Xiao Ling Tong is THE monkey king who will never be dethroned.

Wow... this is a surprise to me, to find an in-depth review and story about this classic drama firm. I like it very much. I found this drama firm by Mdm Yang Jie in a box of VCR tapes when I was 6, recorded by my late grandpa as loves opera and Liu Ling Tong's work. I heard that he recorded this series as a memory because it stared by Liu Ling Tong's son Liu Xiao Ling Tong. I watch it many times until I was 16 and the tapes were deteriorating and searched for a digital copy ever since very last working tape deteriorated a year later but couldn't find one. I had no idea there were so much work and some much danger involved while firming this series until now. Thank you very much for this. I'm gonna resume the search again for a better copy this drama series and keep it as part of my late grandpa's memoir.

Journey to the West is a Chinese television series adapted from the classic 16th-century novel of the same title . The first 11 episodes of the series were first broadcast on CCTV in China on 1 October 1986. The series became an instant classic in China and was praised for being one of the most original and faithful interpretations. The series was budgeted for 30 episodes, due to budgetairy reasons 5 of the planned episodes were left out. The screenplay for the left out 5 episodes was rewritten and some more portions of the original novel were later covered in the second season, which was released in 1999. CCTV released the entire series online on YouTube [1] [2] as an edited version (all episodes are 45 minutes long) with English subtitles. The second season starts in the edited version with the capture of the Tang Monk (footage of the original episode 3). After that the edited version follows the original order. However, episode 5 Meeting immortals at Peacock Platform of the second season was deleted and parts of the content were integrated into the fourth episode Obstacle at Lion Camel Ridge making a total of 40 episodes instead of the original 41. Season 1 has 25 episodes and covers 74 chapters of the novel. The first trial episode was aired on 1 October 1986, and filming lasted until 1987. It was aired as a whole series in 1988. With the limited but relatively new special effects, the series received a viewership rate of 89.4% in 1987. [4] The series has been rebroadcast every year since then. As of 2012, the series has been repeated on Chinese local channels more than 2,000 times. [5]

Season 2 has 16 episodes (covers another 25 chapters of the novel). Filming began in 1998 and finished in 1999. It was broadcast on CCTV in 2000. The internal story of the second season has the four protagonists relating to Emperor Taizong of Tang via flashbacks of their travels and adventures, (namely those episodes not depicted in the first series) upon their return to China. The music for the series was mainly composed by Xu Jingqing (许镜清). It use of the combination of traditional Chinese instruments with Yamaha DX7 synthesizer and electronic drum , [6] its genre is a mixture between Chinese traditional music , Electronic music , and Orchestral song , [7] making them one of the first electronic music compositions aired on the Mainland China mainstream media. The use of electric music that was perceived as "Western" and "modern" in the "traditional Chinese story" was the issue of debate at the time. [8]

The original lead actors of Journey to the West (1986) — Liu Xiao Ling Tong , Chi Chongrui and Ma Dehua — reprised their roles in Wu Cheng'en and Journey to the West , a 2010 television series about Wu Cheng'en and his inspiration for writing the novel Journey to the West .
