A record over 24 crore people visited Kumbh-2019, more than total tourists in UP in 2014-17

The Kumbh 2019 visitors included 10.30 lakh foreign tourists. The Maha Kumbh Mela held in 2013 had seen 7.86 crore pilgrims, including 3.50 lakh foreign tourists, arriving here.

During the 49-day Kumbh Mela 2019 that concluded in March, a significant 24.01 crore people visited the Sangam city. It is said to be not only the highest footfall the mela has ever witnessed in its history but also more than the annual footfall of tourists Uttar Pradesh had between 2014 and 2017.

As per official figures made available by the UP tourism department, 2014 witnessed a total of 18.71 crore tourists in the state. They included 18.42 crore Indians and 29.09 lakh foreigners while in 2015, 20.96 crore tourists, including 20.65 crore Indians and 31.04 lakh foreigners, visited the state.

Further, official records of the department revealed that in 2016, 21.67 crore tourists visited different parts of the state. They included 21.35 crore Indians and 31.56 lakh foreign visitors. In 2017, a total of 23.75 crore tourists visited the state. They included 23.39 crore Indians and 37.80 lakh foreigners.

However, in 2018, the number of tourists having visited the state was more than the footfall witnessed in 2019 Kumbh Mela.

Last year, a total of 28.88 crore tourists, including 28.50 crore Indians and 37.80 foreigners, visited UP.

Secretary, Prayagraj Mela Authority, Vijay Kiran Anand said, “The Kumbh Mela was a memorable event which the world witnessed. The mela witnessed ambassadors of 71 nations arriving on the banks of Sangam besides three world records had made the mela enter the Guinness Book of World Records.”

Regional tourist officer, Prayagraj, Anupam Srivastava said preparations for making the forthcoming Magh Mela had already started with several facilities being proposed including a 2.1 kilometre ropeway between ‘Ulta Qila’ and ‘Triveni Pushp’ having an estimate price tag of ₹ 65 crore.

He said the proposal was pending with the state government and a decision in this context was expected after poll results.

Most Visited Countries 2024

European countries, often rich in history, culture, beautiful beaches, and ocean views, attract the highest number of tourists.

France, leading in tourism for over 30 years, offers attractions like the Eiffel Tower and Disneyland Paris, drawing 38 million tourists to Paris alone in 2019.

Global travel and tourism, an $8.9 trillion industry in 2019, suffered a loss of $4.5 trillion and 62 million jobs in 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Global travel and tourism was an $8.9 trillion (US$) business in 2019 . Moreover, though the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced that number to roughly a quarter of its previous value, all signs point to tourism continuing to grow, expand, and evolve. Every country on Earth has something to offer international visitors, from the pyramids in Egypt to the rainforests of Brazil or the sidewalk cafes of Paris —but which countries attract the most visitors of all? Most of the countries with the highest tourism rates are located in Europe , whose rich history, architecture, and cultural influence make it an appealing destination for many travelers. Countries positioned on or near a body of water are also very popular, particularly those that offer a relaxed, low-key atmosphere mixed with beautiful beaches and ocean views.

Top 10 Countries Most Popular with Tourists (by number of 2019 visitor arrivals)

The most popular tourist destination in the world for more than 30 years, France offers a myriad of attractions: the Eiffel tower, countless world-class restaurants, the Musée du Louvre, the Palace of Versailles, the Notre-Dame cathedral, the beaches of the Côte d'Azur, and of course, Disneyland Paris. Moreover, the lushly beautiful countryside is full of storybook villages, mountains, vineyards, and the occasional castle. One can even view prehistoric cave paintings in Lascaux. Paris, France's capital, is the most visited city in Europe, receiving 38 million tourists in 2019.

Spain is another tourist destination overflowing with interesting attractions. Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia cathedral and other works in Barcelona , the Guggenheim museum, the Alhambra and Generalife Gardens, Europe's largest aquarium (the lily-shaped L'Oceanogràfic), the beaches of Gran Canaria, and La Rambla in Barcelona. Spain is also home to El Teide, an ancient—but not entirely dormant—volcano, which visitors can hike around at the Parque Nacional del Teide on the Spanish island Tenerife.

England's capital city, London , attracts visitors with a wide range of sights including Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, and the British Museum, which includes the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts outside of Cairo . Beyond London, England offers the mysterious Stonehenge, the Beatles' birthplace in Liverpool , the quaint beauty of the Cotswolds, the sci-fi botanical gardens of the Eden Project, and more. Speaking of more, the UK also includes three additional subdivisions. First is Scotland, with the charming city of Edinburgh , moody Loch Ness and Inverness , the scenic highlands, and the historic St. Andrews golf course. Next comes charming Wales and its castles, scenery, and capital city of Cardiff . Finally, Northern Ireland boasts attractions including Belfast 's bubbling nightlife, the glens and coastline of Antrim, and one of Europe's most compelling natural wonders: the Giant's Causeway.

The Mediterranean nation Turkey balances captivating man-made attractions such as Hagia Sophia mosque and Topkapı Palace with archaeological wonders such as the Biblical city of Ephesus, the fairy city of Cappadocia, and the desolate fallen splendor of Mount Nemrut. It also has more than its share of natural wonders, including the famous beaches at Ölüdeniz and Patara, the mineral pools at Pamukkale, and the Mediterranean coastline itself.

The South Asian country of Thailand is also known as the "Land of Smiles", and offers both modern comforts and wild adventure. Thailand's capital, Bangkok , receives over 20 million visitors every year. Popular attractions include the Grand Palace in Bangkok; beaches including Railay, Long, and Monkey beach; the ancient city Ayutthaya and ornate Buddhist wat Coi Suthep, and national parks including Khao Yai (where wild elephants roam) and the otherworldly Khao Sok.

The impact of COVID-19 on travel and tourism

The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-21 had a devastating effect on the travel and tourism industry. According to a report released by the World Travel & Tourism Council , the pandemic cost the industry an estimated US$ 4.5 trillion in 2020, which resulted in the loss of 62 million tourism-dependent jobs. Data from the United Nations World Tourism Organization backs this up. Consider the following table:

International tourist arrivals (in thousands of visitors):

Compared to 2019, tourism dropped by approximately 74% in 2020, with a total of a billion fewer travelers over the course of the year--making 2020 the worst year on record for tourism. The UNTWO's own estimates registered a loss of US$ 1.3 trillion in lost revenues and 100-120 million jobs either lost or at risk.

The impact has been particularly damaging in countries that rely heavily upon tourism as part of their GDP. Lost tourism in Macau , one of China 's special administrative regions, led to a 79.3% drop in year-on-year gambling revenues , which caused overall GDP for 2020 to fall 43.1% compared to the previous year.

While tourism has picked up slightly in 2021, they still fall far short of the pre-pandemic numbers. Late 2020 projections were hopeful that the industry would be back on track by late 2021, but the ongoing nature of the pandemic has thwarted that optimism. As of late 2021, most estimates do not expect the industry to rebound to 2019 (pre-COVID) levels until sometime in 2023 at the earliest.

  • Visitor totals are displayed in 1000s. For example, South Africa 's displayed total of 3886.6 equals 3,886,600 visitors.

Bangladeshis top list of foreigners visiting India

About 54% of all foreign medical visitors going to India for treatment are Bangladeshis, the Indian Ministry of Tourism said

India saw the highest foreign tourism arrivals from Bangladesh in the past three years in a row ending 2020, followed by the US and the UK, according to an official estimate.

In 2018, around 2.25 million Bangladeshi tourists travelled to India, says the Bureau of Immigration of the neighbouring country, which registered 10.93 million tourist arrivals in the following year.

Of them, almost 2.58 million arrivals (23.6%) were from Bangladesh in 2019. Total tourist arrivals fell due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 -- but Bangladesh still managed to grab the maximum chunk of the pie (20%).

Amid the global pandemic in 2020, the number of arrivals from Bangladesh declined to 549,273.

‘Mandatory’ medical tourism

A study by the Indian government, citing the information on visa type for the year 2016, reveals that 77%, 7.3% and 5,9% of the Bangladeshis arriving in India were on tourist, medical and business visas respectively in that year.

About 54% of all foreign medical visitors going to India for treatment are Bangladeshis, the Indian Ministry of Tourism said last year, adding that the number was increasing gradually.

The inflow of medical tourists from Bangladesh has surged by 83% in the last three years since 2018.

In 2015, a total of 120,388 Bangladeshis travelled to India for medical treatment, with the figure rising to 221,751 in 2017.

In 2009, Bangladesh accounted for 23.6% of all medical tourists and the arrivals jumped to 57.5% in 2019.

Data shows that India's medical tourism business attracts the most patients for heart surgery, knee transplants, cosmetic surgery, and dental care because the cost of treatment is the lowest in Asia, far less than that in Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

Over the last three years since 2018, the total number of medical tourists to India has nearly doubled. In 2015, some 2.33 lakh foreigners sought medical care in India; by 2017, that figure had risen to 4.95 lakh, says India’s Bureau of Immigration.

Doubt of reason for visiting?

It has been found that majority of the people visiting with tourist visa are engaged in other activities, a study by the ministry suggests.

However, only very few Bangladesh people recorded their purpose of visit as “business” and majority of them claimed that they came for either religious purpose or for leisure purpose.

A considerable amount of people stays up to nine days in India during their visit but prefer to stay either with friends and relatives or in budget category hotels. Many of them have already visited India six or more times.

Almost 73% of the Bangladeshi tourists have prepared their travel itinerary by themselves without the assistance of travel agents or tour operators. Many of them have dependent on public buses for local transportation within in India.

Only a couple of tourists seek the help of tour operators for packages and out of which only a nominal number of people opted packages costing Tk45,000-75,000. The survey reveals that the majority of them spend below Tk10,000 during their stay in India.

15 Best Places to Visit in India, According to Travel Experts

F rom the alpine meadows of Kashmir to the palm-fringed beaches of Goa, these are some of the subcontinent’s most enchanting destinations.

As a former longtime Delhiite and frequent traveler to India, people often ask me what the country is like. I never know how to respond, for trying to sum up a nation as vast and diverse as India feels impossible. So, instead, I asked a few experts for their insights.

“If you visit India, you feel you have visited several countries, as every part is different,” says Mohd Shafi Billo, an inbound tour operator who specializes in helping international travelers plan their trips to the country. “It’s an exceptional destination, thanks to its culture, history, and inclusiveness of different people from different faiths, and it has everything to offer, from forts to mausoleums, wildlife tours to mountain adventures.”

Shoba Rudra, founder and partner at hospitality consultancy Rare India , agrees. “The country is living a dynamic moment in history, ever-changing,” she says. “What's constant, however, is the vibrant culture lived through its festivals, cuisine, heritage, crafts, and performing arts.”

While it would take years to see it all, India is an approachable destination — if you can narrow things down. With that in mind, here are 15 of the best places to get you started on your sojourn to the subcontinent.

Stretching along the southernmost part of India’s Malabar Coast, the tropical state of Kerala entices visitors with its marshy backwaters, which most people visit on overnight houseboat adventures. These popular cruises “showcase lush landscapes and peaceful villages, and [give visitors] a glimpse into local life amid tranquil waters and picturesque surroundings,” says Billo. While the backwaters are a star attraction, the state offers much more to explore, from the tea plantations of Munnar, known for its cool climate and seemingly endless rolling hills, to the historic city of Kochi, celebrated in equal measure for its rich coastal history and contemporary art scene . The beaches aren’t too shabby, either. “North Kerala is also famous, as the Malabar Coast is where the spice trade flourished,” says Rudra. “The coastal area is picturesque and this region is still unexplored.”

On the opposite end of the country from Kerala, Kashmir offers entirely different — but equally captivating — landscapes. With its alpine climate, evergreen trees, and snowy winters, Kashmir is often likened to a mini Switzerland . Famed 13th-century Sufi poet Amir Khusrau once proclaimed in Farsi, “If there is a paradise on earth, it is this,” and he may have been onto something. At the heart of it all is Srinagar, Kashmir’s capital city, which is known for its elegant gardens and watery centerpiece, Dal Lake. “Highlights include staying on a houseboat or taking a shikara [traditional Kashmiri boat] ride,” says Billo, who hails from the area. Don't leave without indulging in wazwan , an opulent, meat-heavy feast that can feature up to three dozen dishes in one sitting.

Occupying a high-altitude plateau in the northernmost reaches of India, Ladakh is characterized by otherworldly landscapes and big skies, punctuated by palatial stupas and monasteries. Many visitors come to Ladakh’s capital, Leh, during the short summer tourist season, but this surreal region offers plenty more to experience beyond the city. Billo suggests visiting the Nubra Valley, an isolated part of the old Silk Road that’s only accessible by crossing Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable passes. “The valley offers a glimpse into Ladakh's unique geography and cultural diversity with monasteries, quaint villages, and apricot orchards,” says Billo. The region is also rich with unusual wildlife, from elusive snow leopards to the scaled-down Bactrian camels that originated in the steppes of Central Asia.

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

On the banks of the sacred Ganges River, the holy city of Rishikesh has held a place in the hearts of spiritually minded travelers — both from India and abroad — for generations. It’s the self-proclaimed “yoga capital of the world,” with a mix of traditional ashrams (spiritual rest houses) that cater largely to Hindu pilgrims and yoga centers that attract international visitors with teacher-training courses and meditation retreats. If you’re not into yoga, you’ll still find plenty to do here. Popular activities include visiting the ruins of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram (dubbed the Beatles Ashram in honor of its most famous former residents) to whitewater rafting adventures on the mighty Ganges. It’s also a great place for a wellness getaway, and nearby Ananda in the Himalayas was voted one of Travel + Leisure readers' favorite international spas in 2023.

Auroville, Tamil Nadu

If you’re looking for a place that’s unlike anywhere else in India — or, frankly, the world — head to the intentional community of Auroville in South India. This UNESCO-recognized global township was founded in the 1960s with the goal of "realizing human unity," beyond the illusory divisions of creed or nationality, and it's home to generations of residents from around the world. Many visitors come for an hour or two, just long enough to view Auroville’s spiritual center — the golden, dome-shaped Matrimandir . However, it’s worth sticking around a bit longer to get a feel for what the community is about. As Akash Kapur, who grew up in Auroville and authored " Better to Have Gone " and " India Becoming ," puts it: "Come to Auroville if you're interested in alternative societies, sustainable living, or spirituality, but try not to just drop in for a few hours (as many do), and instead spend some time here, really getting to know the people and their work. The community rewards sustained immersion."

Andaman Islands

Although most people associate the crystalline waters of the Andaman Sea with Thai island getaways, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in this tropical region are under Indian control. This little stretch of paradise is full of gorgeous shorelines, but most visitors devote their vacations to the island of Swaraj Dweep (formerly known as Havelock). The most popular beach on the island is Radhanagar Beach , which offers just over a mile of white sand sandwiched between tropical jungle and warm, transparent waters. Getting to this remote island requires a bit of gumption: You'll need to fly from the Indian mainland to Port Blair on South Andaman Island, then catch a ferry or charter a seaplane for the final stretch. While visitors are welcome on many islands in the chain, a few — including secluded North Sentinel Island — are off-limits.

While many travelers see India’s capital as a jumping-off point for visiting further-afield destinations, it’s worth sticking around for a while to truly appreciate what Delhi has to offer. There’s certainly never a dull moment in this busy metropolis, whether you’re shopping for handicrafts at one of its numerous markets or learning about medieval and Mughal history at one of its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Humayun's Tomb, Qutb Minar, and Red Fort. Although Delhi is undeniably rambunctious, it also has a quieter, more peaceful side that you can find amidst the trees and 15th-century tombs of Central Delhi’s Lodi Gardens or in the quiet interiors of the Baháʼí Lotus Temple.

Taj Mahal, Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Many travelers to India put the 17th-century Taj Mahal at the top of their list. This white marble mausoleum is easily India’s most recognizable structure — and it’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World . This popular attraction also has a romantic backstory. “This iconic symbol of love is renowned for its architectural beauty, intricate marble work, and the captivating story behind its creation by emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal,” notes Billo. The bodies of the emperor and his wife remain interred in the Taj to this day.

Jaipur. Rajasthan

The capital of Rajasthan and one-third of North India’s popular Golden Triangle tourist route (which also includes Agra and Delhi), Jaipur is a must-visit for those who love architecture and shopping. “The Pink City, as it's nicknamed, offers a rich cultural heritage, stunning [landmarks] like Amber Fort, vibrant bazaars, and intricate handicrafts,” says Billo. Many of Jaipur's key attractions are found in the historic walled part of the city, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Highlights include Jantar Mantar (a collection of oversized — and fully functional — astronomical instruments dating to the 17th century) and Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, a honeycomb-shaped palace designed with tiny windows that allowed air to flow freely through its interior.

Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Dubbed the Blue City because of the cerulean-colored buildings that extend for miles through the oldest part of town, Jodhpur has long attracted travelers eager to explore the ramparts of the larger-than-life Mehrangarh Fort. It’s also home to the grandiose Umaid Bhawan Palace , which made headlines in 2018 when Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot there. While Jodhpur’s beautiful, regal architecture is reason enough to visit, there’s more to the city than massive forts and grand palaces. “The area around the Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell in the old city is fun to explore,” says hotelier Sapna Bhatia, owner of Kaner Retreat and Jodhpur-area native. “For nature enthusiasts, there’s the Rao Jodha desert park near Mehrangarh Fort.”

Udaipur, Rajasthan

T+L readers' favorite city in Asia and second favorite city in the world , Udaipur very much fits the bill of a fairy tale destination. Nicknamed the City of Lakes, thanks to its seven lakes, this gorgeous destination is home to some of India's finest luxury hotels plus historic whitewashed palaces, including the magnificent City Palace, an 11-palace complex that houses hotels, a huge museum with an impressive collection of European crystal, and a royal residence. A short boat ride from the palace lies the 18th-century Taj Lake Palace, an opulent palace-turned-hotel in the middle of Lake Pichola. It’s a quick drive from The Oberoi, Udaivilas , a purpose-built palatial hotel with onion-domed cupolas and a moat-like swimming pool that directly connects to some of the rooms.

If you’re looking for a less-frequented, but no less amazing, alternative to more touristed states such as Rajasthan, consider Gujarat. “Under-explored but culturally rich, this state in India is a tapestry of festivals, textiles, architectural heritage, communities, and landscape,” says Rudra. Gujarat was also the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, who led the Salt March, one of his most famous acts of peaceful protest, through the state in 1930. Rudra suggests visiting the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial , which “honors the activists through murals, installations, sculptures, art, and related film.” It's also worth checking out the Kutch district, known for its distinct metal bells , which were originally used for keeping track of livestock and are now popular as decorative wind chimes.

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

The northeast Indian state of Assam is home to a treasure for wildlife enthusiasts: Kaziranga National Park . This expansive, UNESCO-listed wildlife refuge near the borders of Bangladesh and Bhutan has the largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses on the planet, providing a home to roughly 2,000 of these massive beasts. Although rhinos are the star attraction on park safaris, all sorts of animals live here, including tigers, elephants, gibbons, sloth bears, and a small number of endangered Ganges River dolphins.

Historic, glitzy, and positively gargantuan, Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is easily one of India’s most cosmopolitan destinations. This city by the sea is the nation's financial and entertainment capital, and while you’re unlikely to rub shoulders with Bollywood stars here, you're sure to see a lot of impressive attractions in very little time. Take a boat out to Elephanta Island to explore fifth– and sixth–century rock-hewn cave temples, marvel at the grand Indo-Saracenic architecture at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus , or see thousands of clothes hanging out to dry at Dhobi Ghat, the world's largest open-air laundry. Then, head to the sleek neighborhood of Bandra West, where many of Mumbai’s best restaurants and hotels are located, including Taj Lands End, voted T+L readers' favorite city hotel in India in 2023.

India’s smallest state, Goa, is arguably its top beach destination, where long days of swimming and sunbathing turn into longer nights of partying on the sand. While Goa has been known as a hippie haven since the 1960s, it's started to shed its reputation in recent decades. It’s still very much a party state, though it also draws in families and couples in search of sea and sun, sans nightlife. It’s a great place for history buffs as well, with numerous seaside forts and UNESCO-recognized churches that were built when Goa was under Portuguese rule. And while the destination has always been loved for its fiery dishes that combine traditional Konkani ingredients with Portuguese influences, it has also emerged as a culinary hot spot , where a new generation of chefs is showcasing everything from Japanese yakitori to jackfruit tamales.

How to get more tourists to Incredible India

India has 42 cultural and natural properties identified as Unesco World Heritage Sites, the sixth most in the world.

India received 7.2 million foreign tourists in the first 10 months of 2023, a big step-up from 4.6 million in the same period in 2022. The last two months, for which data is not yet available, are peak tourist months, so the full-year total could surpass the 10.9 million who visited India in 2019 before the pandemic disrupted international travel.

The return of tourists, though welcome, should not detract from the fact that India does not attract as many as it should. How do we come to this conclusion?

A good starting point is to compare India with other tourist destinations in Asia, the logic being that given the post-pandemic rise in health concerns and geopolitical tensions, more travellers prefer frequent short-haul trips to nearby locations.

The numbers are sobering: in 2019, Thailand and Japan received about twice as many visitors as India, Vietnam had nearly the same number, and China welcomed 65 million tourists.

total tourist visited india in 2019

One can argue that India offers a unique experience vastly different from the beaches of Phuket or the war memorials of Vietnam. Indeed, India has 42 cultural and natural properties identified as Unesco World Heritage Sites, the sixth most in the world.

But a comparison with other top countries on the list is disappointing, too: Mexico and the UK, for instance, draw in far more visitors than India.

What needs fixing?

For a tourist destination to be attractive, it should meet some basic requirements. These include safety (not being robbed, assaulted, murdered); freedom from harassment (from touts, beggars, hustlers); cleanliness (around roads, tourist attractions, eating places); sanitation (clean and safe toilets in public places); connectivity (transport links and digital connectivity); and a choice of hotels and restaurants.

Extras like digital payments and price competitiveness make a location more desirable, but are not necessarily deal-breakers.

India’s performance on these core expectations is not great. That may explain why it slipped from 46th to 54th place between 2019 and 2021 on the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Development Index.

total tourist visited india in 2019

A look at some of the index components shows what tourists like and don’t like about India. Tourists appreciate the country’s natural and cultural resources. They also give a thumbs-up to its airports, roads and ports. But India was ranked very low on safety, hygiene, and tourist infrastructure such as accommodation and car rentals.

The conclusion: pull factors are in place, but the overall tourist experience can be better.

Why it matters

The travel, tourism and hospitality sectors collectively employ thousands of workers who may lack formal degrees but have skills related to their specific roles in the tourist ecosystem.

According to the tourism ministry, in 2019-20, the direct contribution of tourism to GDP was 2.7%, and overall contribution was 5.2%. The industry employed over 34 million directly, and nearly 80 million across related industries.

Also, foreign tourists bring in foreign exchange, though the industry is not commonly viewed as a dollar generator. In 2022-23, tourism earned $21.6 billion of foreign exchange. To put that in perspective, this was higher than the $19.8 billion from pharma exports and close to the $21.4 billion generated by exports of organic chemicals.

Tourism also plays a key role in propping up city economies. More than half of foreign tourists come via Delhi or Mumbai, which are among the top 10 in the world in terms of direct tourism employment: Delhi at fifth, with over a million jobs, and Mumbai at 10th, with 354,000, as of 2019, as per the World Travel and Tourism Council.

Market the package

India will need to package and market its astonishing array of tourist experiences smartly. To begin with, the tourist base can be widened beyond the traditional source countries, namely, the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and Bangladesh. The share of tourists from southeast Asia can be increased, given our cultural and geographical proximity with that region.

total tourist visited india in 2019

Countries compete fiercely for the tourist dollar on multiple fronts: India will need to do the same.

  • In 2023, Malaysia and Thailand waived visas for Indians; a reciprocal arrangement with adequate checks could boost tourists from these countries.
  • Visas for high-income digital nomads to live and work remotely from India may be considered, as these workers typically contribute heavily to the local economy.
  • Women travelling solo or in groups are an important emerging demographic, and specific female-friendly programmes could be designed for them.
  • Social media can be used innovatively to grab eyeballs—Instagram Reels of happy tourists are more effective than traditional campaigns.
  • Green tourism supported by community participation has already taken off in Meghalaya, and more such success stories could be nurtured and advertised.
  • Finally, India is well-placed to become a medical service hub: hospitals in major cities already manage large numbers of patients from South Asia and Africa.

A few improvements to the enabling environment and some tweaks to the marketing strategy are all we need to showcase India’s beauty to the world.
