There She Goes Again

An Easy Stonehenge Trip: How to Visit in a Day

This post detailing the perfect, easy Stonehenge trip is part of my friend, Elissa’s, Europe series! After she left Korea, she traveled around a bit before heading home to LA, and she was kind enough to write about all her adventures for the blog. If you’re hoping to see this iconic structure, we hope this helps you out!

Since Jen and I extended our London itinerary to about 7 days , we wanted to do a day trip somewhere. We didn’t know if we’d ever get the opportunity again, so we decided to make the trek to see the iconic Stonehenge.

It’s a feature in so many famous movies, books, and TV shows, we wanted to see it for ourselves at least once.  Stonehenge and nearby Salisbury are a fairly easy day trip from London and there was a lot more to see than we realized!

The Perfect Guide to a Stonehenge Day Trip

For our trip, we used the Stonehenge Tour Bus (more below), which goes to three major sites: Stonehenge, Old Sarum, and Salisbury Cathedral.

First Stop: Visiting Stonehenge

From Salisbury, the bus will go straight to the Stonehenge Visitor Center.

Stonehenge has one of the most interesting histories! Growing up, we were told the big mystery of the monument was that no one quite knew how or why it was built.

The structure we see now was first constructed almost 5,000 years ago, and many believe the larger stones (or sarsens) were brought from as far as 20 miles away while the smaller stones (or bluestones) were brought from as far as 140 miles away in Wales. While people have theories on  how the stones could have been transported to their current spot, no one has ever figured it out for sure.

As for why we have this circular monument, the answer also isn’t very clear.

There have been plenty of conspiracies (like aliens), but recently BBC put out an article with the most recent research. They discovered that what we see may have been a small part of a larger series of structures spanning for miles. In fact, while Stonehenge itself is around 5,000 years old, the area has been in use for 9,000 years!

Second Stop: Salisbury Cathedral

Not only is Salisbury Cathedral a beautiful example of Early English architecture, it’s also home to the best preserved of the four remaining 1215 Magna Cartas.

The Cathedral also has the tallest spire (123m from the ground) and the largest cathedral close (80 acres) in Britain. It’s quite impressive!

Visiting Salisbury Cathedral:

  • Address: 6 The Close, Salisbury SP1 2EJ, UK
  • Hours: Mon.- Sat. 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Sun. – 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

See the Magna Carta

Third Stop: Old Sarum

Old Sarum was a pleasant surprise! We only planned on seeing it if we had time and because it’s a stop on the Stonehenge Tour Bus. It’s definitely worth seeing, and it has great views of the surrounding countryside.

It’s home to the earliest settled of Salisbury and, as a result, home to  over 2,000 years of Roman, Norman, and Saxon history. You can visit the ruins and foundations of Salisbury’s original cathedral, an old castle, and an Iron Age fort.

  • Closed December 24-26
  • Sunday – Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Sunday – Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  • Adult Ticket: £5.20
  • Address: Castle Road, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP1 3SD

Getting to Stonehenge

We traveled by bus since it was much cheaper, but it is possible (and definitely easier) to get there via train or car.

From London to Salisbury:

We took National Express Bus from London (Victoria Coach Station) to Salisbury ( Millstream Coach Park, near The Boathouse ) with a transfer in Southampton (Coach Station- Harbour Parade).

The ride from London to Southampton was about 2 hours. The ride from Southampton to Salisbury was about 45 minutes. We left London around 6:30 a.m. and arrived in Salisbury around 10:30 am.

**There are direct buses from London to Salisbury, there just weren’t any available for the time and day we wanted.

From Salisbury to London:

Our trip back to London from Salisbury was the same as the trip there. We left Salisbury at 6:40 p.m. and arrived in London at 10:15 p.m.

If you don’t mind a 2-3 hour bus trip both ways, then I definitely recommend this option since it was so much cheaper than going by train or car.

Also, we had about nine full hours to explore Salisbury, which was plenty of time and we feel like we saw a lot without rushing to the next thing! Besides the traveling bit, it was a very relaxing day.

From Salisbury:

Once we were in Salisbury, we took the Stonehenge Tour Bus to the Stonehenge Visitor Center  where a short shuttle runs from to Stonehenge itself.

The Stonehenge Tour Bus is a hop-on-hop-off bus that not only takes you to Stonehenge and Salisbury but to Old Sarum as well. We used it to get to all of the sites (besides walking of course), and it’s quite easy and convenient to use.

Stonehenge Opening Hours and Tickets

stonehenge tour klook

Opening Hours:

Stonehenge is open seven days a week, 9.30 am to 5 pm (9.30 am to 7 pm in June, July, August). You can gain entry every day throughout the year apart from Christmas Day.

There is different pricing for peak, off-peak, and standard tickets. As you’d expect, peak time is the most popular time, so it’s the most expensive. Therefore, off-peak (Monday to Friday) has the cheapest tickets because of the lower demand during the working week.

Off-peak: Adults £22, Concessions £19.80, Children £13.20 Family Admission £57.20.

Standard: Adults £24, Concessions £21.60, Children £14.40, and Family Admission £62.40. Typically, the weekends in the low season and weekdays in the months of June, July, and August are standard-priced

Peak: Adults £29, Concessions £26, Children £18, and Family Admission £76. Typically, the weekends in June, July, and August are peak-priced.

And finally, advance booking is not a necessity. However, you are more likely to get a cheaper price and guaranteed entry if you do so. Note: the prices given above are the cheaper online prices. The last time to buy tickets at the Stonehenge site is 4:30 pm during the summer season (June, July, and August) and 2:30 pm in autumn, winter, and spring.

Pro Tip: Stonehenge can get very busy between 11 am and 2 pm and on bank holidays. So those who want some peaceful time for reflection at the historic monuments should visit at other times.

How Long To Spend at Stonehenge

stonehenge tour klook

Short Answer: about 5.5 hours

Stonehenge is 90 miles away from London and it takes 1.5 – 3 hours to travel from London to Stonehenge, depending on your method of transport. You’ll also need 2.5 hours to spend on the archaeological site.

How To Get To Stonehenge

A bus/coach can take up to 3 hours to get to Stonehenge and they leave from Victoria Coach Station (London) any time after 6 am. Alternatively, we offer an attractive tour option with transportation included along with stops at Windsor Castle and the city of Bath.

There’ll be no visitor queues for you during this day trip, and you’ll have an expert guide at hand. You get to learn about the historic castle residence of the British royals and also the Roman baths that gave Bath its name.

There is no direct bus or train to Stonehenge, so our Stonehenge tour options will cut out a lot of the travel hassle that you’d experience with trains or rented cars. If you still wish to travel by train, Stonehenge is on Salisbury Plain in the county of Wiltshire, so you can take a direct train from London Waterloo to Salisbury station.

Regarding train frequency, expect two to three an hour and the journey takes 1 hour 30 minutes. However, Salisbury station is 9 miles away from Stonehenge so you must factor in an additional cab or bus to the site.

Rented Car:

Those who want to travel by rented car must consider London’s heavy traffic and its congestion charges which may make that option less attractive. Also, in England cars are right-hand drive and move on the opposite side of the road to many countries, so that may also be a little confusing.

We’d only advise renting a car if you are going to explore the English countryside for several days, then it will be quite handy and cost-effective. The journey to Stonehenge can be as fast as 1 hour 40 minutes or as long as 2 hours 30 minutes depending on traffic.

Getting there from the Visitors’ Center:

On arriving at the Visitors Center on your own, your booking details will be checked at the admissions point. You can then view the center’s interactive exhibits and artifacts and then visit Stonehenge or vice versa. You then need to catch a shuttle bus to the site. They are quite regular and the journey takes 5-10 minutes.

Alternatively, you can walk from the Visitor Centre and explore the National Trust’s ancient landscapes. Along the way, you will see other amazing prehistoric monuments including Bronze Age burial mounds. Also, there are information panels with further details about the monuments and sites that lie ahead.

Moreover, you can obtain a Stonehenge walkers’ map from the Visitors Centre with info on the walking routes and key points along the way. The walking distance from the Visitor Centre is 2 kilometers (1.3 miles) and will take you 20-40 minutes.

Pro Tip: You are advised to travel lightly, without much luggage. This is because once you get to the Stonehenge site there isn’t a cloakroom or anywhere to keep luggage. And remember, you can stay as long as you like at the site but have to return to the Visitors Centre by the 5 pm closing time.

What To See at Stonehenge

stonehenge tour klook

You could easily describe Stonehenge as a “bunch of rocks in a field” because that is what they are, but the experience is actually surreal. This is especially the case when you know what to see and the story behind them . Here are some of the things you should look out for while visiting:

  • Stonehenge Stone Circle
  • Stonehenge Exhibition (Visitor Centre)
  • The Landscape Walking Trail
  • Bronze Age Burial Mounds
  • The Cuckoo Stone
  • Durrington Walls (Henge Monument)

  • It was first built over 5,000 years ago during the late Neolithic Age. The structure we see today is the result of additional henge structures erected over thousands of years with the last stone added in 1,500 B.C. (early Bronze Age).
  • The stone circle in the middle of the henge landscape was built in 2500 B.C.
  • Stonehenge has an unusually high number of prehistoric monuments.
  • The stone circle is made of very large sarsen stones (weighing 25 tonnes) and smaller bluestones (2 to 5 tonnes). Because of the size of these stones, it is regarded as an unbelievable feat of engineering that prehistoric Britons were able to erect a structure such as this.
  • Archaeologists believe the sarsen stones were transported on wooden sleds from a rocky area 32km away. However, the nearest bluestones are in Wales, a country in the U.K. that’s 225km away from Stonehenge.
  • There are many theories about its function. English Heritage claim the structure marks the movements of the sun, perhaps for farmers to map the cycle of the seasons. But many leading British archaeologists say it was a place of healing—an early ceremonial stone hospital. Furthermore, it’s been proven that during the Bronze Age it was used for funeral ceremonies.
  • In 1986, Stonehenge was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Places To Eat Nearby

Stonehenge is set in a secluded rural heritage site on Salisbury Plain, so there are few restaurants and cafés in the immediate area. However, you will inevitably need to eat, so here are a few places nearby to get something to eat. For more options, see our article on the best restaurants near Stonehenge .

Stonehenge Visitor Centre Café : ££ | Quick Snacks —As you’d expect, this is the closest eatery to the stone circle site. Their food is locally produced and includes many light snack options such as soups, hotspots, sandwiches, sausage rolls, and salads. Vegetarians are also catered for.

Stonehenge Inn : ££ | Pub —The Stonehenge Inn is a good choice because it offers greater food variety and a better atmosphere than the other restaurants and cafés closer to the site. Also, you get to see their delightful mini replica of Stonehenge. They have a pub food menu for both adults and children. Curious Tourists and Modern-Day Druids: Marking the Solstice at Stonehenge

To celebrate the celestial event, the ropes come down at the ancient monument, and visitors spend the night to greet the sunrise.

At night, the Stonehenge monument is bathed in purple light and a crowd of people is moving around it. To the left of the photograph there is a faint pink tinge in the sky, which might be the sun.

By Lisa Lucas

In the predawn darkness, a procession of druid priests in white robes carry banners by the monoliths of Stonehenge, the ancient British archaeological site. There is an aroma of burning sage; a bagpipe calls in the distance. As dawn approaches, fever-pitched drumming mounts. If you hadn’t already felt the power in the stones at this summer solstice celebration, there is no denying the physical vibration as the sun rises in alignment with the stone circle.

Most of the time, visiting Stonehenge — which is owned by the British crown and managed by English Heritage , a nonprofit that oversees more than 400 of the country’s historic sites — requires purchasing tickets and keeping far away from the stones, which are normally cordoned off by ropes. But since 2000, four times a year, on the solstices and equinoxes, the ropes come down and visitors are invited to wander the stone circle, staying overnight and past sunrise if they wish.

On Thursday, to mark this year’s summer solstice, the monument opened at 7 p.m., as visitors began arriving on shuttle buses from nearby Salisbury, a trip that took most of an hour in traffic. The rules were strict: Blankets for picnics and warmth are allowed, but no camping equipment or chairs. Snacks are OK. Alcohol is prohibited.

The crowd ebbed and flowed, with an evening wave of tourists who came to picnic, then left before nightfall. People staying overnight faced evening temperatures of about 50 degrees Fahrenheit without shelter. Those who stayed drummed, chanted and communed with the stones, which were lit by a nearly full moon and purple floodlights. Flower crowns topped many heads. The intensity built through the night and picked up with faster drumming and chanting when the sky lightened just before 4 a.m.

There were also food trucks offering wood-fired pizzas, loaded fries, curries and doughnuts, and a merch tent for souvenirs.

Arthur Pendragon, 70, a modern-day druid (the ancient druids were Celtic priests), wore white robes with an embroidered red dragon, chunky silver rings and a silver dragon crown. He called the stones “a cathedral.” Charlotte Pulver, 45, an apothecary from Hastings who specializes in natural remedies, has been coming to the site for 12 years. She said it feels “special to gather in community to honor these tides and alignments of the earth.” Some American tourists in the U.K. to see Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour had “decided to swing by.” In all, about 15,000 people visited.

Crowds walked the interior of the circle, touching the sarsens (sarsen refers to the type of sandstone used at Stonehenge) placed here around 4,500 years ago. Some held ceremonies, welcoming the new season with chants of “heart to heart and hand to hand.” Some placed their hands on the stones and closed their eyes, seeming to draw power from them. The surfaces are gray and uneven, scarred with graffiti from the Bronze Age and, on one, a carved signature from Christopher Wren, the architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The orange powder sprayed on them in a climate protest on Wednesday had already been washed away.

The monument has been credited to various groups over its history, including Phoenicians, druids and Romans. Jennifer Wexler, a historian for English Heritage who specializes in prehistoric sites, said that the archaeological consensus is that Stonehenge was built in stages and used differently over thousands of years, from the late Neolithic period to the early Bronze Age, or between about 3000 B.C. and 1500 B.C.

The druid link is hazy but is undoubtedly part of Stonehenge’s modern identity. In the 17th century, one of the early excavators suggested that the druids were the likely builders. Even after this was disproved (the earliest known references to the druids date to the 4th century B.C., well after research suggests Stonehenge was built), the idea stuck.

It’s fitting that a modern group, inspired by the past, has co-opted Stonehenge for its own use. As the archaeologist Jacquetta Hawkes wrote in a 1967 essay titled “God in the Machine”: “Every age has the Stonehenge it deserves — or desires.” The poet William Blake called it a “building of eternal death.”

Appreciation of the sun and the solstice echoes down the centuries in Britain, with references in Anglo-Saxon literature and ties to the Medieval mystery plays. Of course, there’s also Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Britain’s relatively northern position means there is less than six hours of light in midwinter, but at the solstice the sun rises before 5 a.m. and doesn’t set until almost 9:30 at night.

Dr. Wexler, the English Heritage historian, said the solstice alignment is at the center of Stonehenge’s design. This is perhaps not surprising given how prominent the sky and seasonal rhythms would have been in the late Neolithic period: the movement of the sun and the stars dominated life.

Druid Chris Park, 51, a member of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids from Oxfordshire, is an artist and beekeeper. He said he sees the solstice as something that transcends religions and nationalities because it is accessible to all and therefore “can unify us in meaningful moments of peace and celebration.”

At 4:52 a.m. on Thursday, standing in a field on Salisbury Plain, with druids in white robes and tourists wrapped in blankets, we were all looking in one direction at the same time (albeit some of us through phone screens). This collective attention to the sun was a link to each other and to those who stood in this place 5,000 years ago to gaze at the sun from the same angle — appreciating darkness giving way to light.

Climate change activists target Stonehenge, Taylor Swift's jet. Do these kinds of stunts make a difference?

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

“The 360” shows you diverse perspectives on the day’s top stories and debates.

What’s happening

Over the past week, climate activists have carried out a series of high-profile protests aimed at drawing attention to what they believe is the urgent need to phase out global fossil fuel consumption.

On Wednesday, a pair of activists from the environmental group Just Stop Oil were arrested after spraying orange paint on the ancient Stonehenge monument in England. The next day, more Just Stop Oil activists attempted to do the same to Taylor Swift’s private jet at a London airfield, but apparently settled for painting two other planes after being unable to find it. Protesters from a different group, Extinction Rebellion, disrupted the final round of a PGA golf tournament in Connecticut on Sunday.

Incidents like these have become increasingly common as some climate groups have shifted tactics away from more common protests like street marches in favor of disruptive actions. In recent years, they have “souped” Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” painting, defaced a wax statue of King Charles, shut down freeways and interfered with a prominent politician's wedding .

Why there’s debate

As long as social movements have existed, there has been debate — often among those who share the same goals — over what are the most effective ways to disrupt the status quo and whether outlandish protests help or hurt the cause.

Supporters of activist stunts say bold acts are needed to shake the public and lawmakers from their complacency about the extreme dangers of climate change. To some observers, the inherent absurdity of throwing soup at a classic work of art — an act one protestor herself called “ridiculous” — is crucial to break through the noise in a way that more traditional forms of protest often fail to do.

There are, of course, plenty of critics who deny that dramatic action is needed to curb climate change. But a lot of people in the climate movement also oppose direct actions like the van Gogh protest.

They argue that, as attention-grabbing as they might be, viral stunts can make all environmentalists look like fringe extremists detached from the mainstream. The way to truly create a green energy revolution, they say, is to work within the system to push business and government into systemic change. Others make the case that a huge share of the public already supports plans to reduce carbon emissions, so flashy protests aimed at raising awareness are wasted effort and can even be counterproductive.

Perspectives

Bold action is needed to shake the public from its complacency

“It is only well outside centres of power that you can find the answer to a question that power and politics are dodging more than ever — how to live as if the truth is actually true.” — John Harris, the Guardian

Attention on its own does not equal persuasion

“Research shows that this kind of tactic doesn’t work to change minds and hearts. … It’s working to get attention, but to what end?” — Dana Fisher, protest movement historian, to the Washington Post

Protests succeed when they draw attention to major problems that are being ignored

“Acts like this may be controversial. … But they are important acts of civil resistance that force the public to consider why we are allowing the wealthiest governments, often controlled by corporate interests, to ignore the science that we need to end our dependence on fossil fuels. … To that extent, these protestors are working in an important tradition of non-violent protest (protest that does not harm other people) and raising the most important questions facing humanity.” — Amy Woodson-Boulton, historian, to the Independent

Science and public policy, not viral protests, are what will ultimately curb climate change

“We need more climate-conscious young people to dedicate themselves to tackling the technological barriers to decarbonization and formulating industrial policies that erode the political ones. For the moment, it is less clear that we need more people to obstruct London traffic or throw soup at paintings. Philanthropists should allocate funds accordingly.” — Eric Levitz, New York

Outrage should be directed at the people who are destroying the planet

“There is no art on a dead planet. If we continue to spew billions of tons of carbon dioxide into the Earth’s atmosphere each year while further destroying its ecosystems, then cultural icons such as Sunflowers risk becoming worthless because there will be no one around to value them.” — James Dyke, iNews

Lack of awareness isn’t what’s holding back the green energy transition

“Just Stop Oil’s strategy rests on the assumption that if only more people understood the truth of the climate emergency then we would all act. But more people than [ever] understand the climate crisis and support action to address it. The problem is not an absence of knowledge, but a lack of popular political power.” — Chris Saltmarsh, Common Dreams

Any protest that draws attention to the climate fight is worth celebrating

“Art demands that we think, and challenges us to question the status quo. And nothing demands challenging more right now than the world’s continuing reliance on fossil fuels. It would be wonderful if every protest could be a masterpiece of its kind, yet at this time of rising emergency, well-meaning and peaceful acts of expression should surely be applauded not stamped out.” — India Bourke, New Statesman

Wacky viral moments make the climate movement look out of touch and petulant

“Everyone who is committed to climate action should utterly repudiate ‘activism’ of this sort, and the broad organization that is carrying it out. It reduces climate concern to something perceived as a mere point of view expressed by privileged brats throwing tantrums, a pretension that is at best annoying and at worst dangerous, and in any event not to be taken seriously.” — Ben Kritz, Manila Times

Bizarre protests lack the clarity of vision needed to make a real impact

“Policy-makers need strong incentives to change the status quo, and disruptive protests can make the difference by reducing the likelihood of a voter backlash while placing direct pressure on those in power. However, for civil disobedience to be effective, protesters need to have clear, positive and constructive intentions.” — Alistair Walsh, Deutsche Welle
