Vienna à la carte

Robert was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable- not just about the major sites but also the wider European history of the region. Driving was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed our day. Highly recommend.

This was one of our highlights during the trip, breath-taking views and clean crisp air coupled with the charm of Salzburg at Christmastime - made the long trip worthwhile. Rui was a great guide (and driver) and extremely knowledgeable - he also drove us to our hotel in the end. I recommend this tour to anyone visiting Vienna - it is amazing!

Fantastic day out with our guide Rui. Despite the snow and inclement weather he made it fun and showed us interesting spots on the way to Salzburg. Enough time in Salzburg for a personalised tour and an independent roam around. An excellent and safe driver with a very comfy mini bus. Would highly recommend.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. I was with my Mom & sister and he was very accommodating since my Mom was in a mobilty scooter. The stops along the way were beautiful and he found us nice halfway points for a quick break.

I went with my rather mature 11 year old son, and we found this tour to be very good. Our tour guide was wonderful, compassionate, and informative. While I understand this tour is not appropriate for younger kids, it was appropriate for my child and important history for us to learn.

It was a nice group of people. Robert was a great guide & driver. Despite the cold, rainy day, it was a fun trip!

Exceptional. Great driver. Savvy and friendly local guide. Listen to their recommendations for restaurants!

Our guide, Joseph, was amazing, knowledgeable, patient, kind and understanding of the different needs of our group and very helpful! Loved the picture taking, the history lessons and our special tour stops! Thank you, Joseph!

It was a long time in the car but the time in Salzburg was wonderful and the drive thru the alpine lake region was beautiful

Excellent trip great tour guide and bus driver. Very professionals and polite. The tour was very interesting and impressive. Something very amazing to never let us forget about the terrible things that happen there. If you have the opportunity this is your sign for it!

Touring Austria

The need to know

Getting around

Odyssey travels by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains and ferries. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. Trains, operated by the Austrian Federal Railways, are a fast and efficient option to travel around the country. Buses can be handy in getting you to remote regions and villages, and bus services operate in most cities. Domestic flights are available, though can be a costly option.

Accommodation

In major cities in Austria, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our long stay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

Tour Guides

Odyssey always engages local guides with regional knowledge to ensure an authentic experience during which you can learn as much as possible about the history and culture of places you visit.

Geography, environment and weather

Austria is a landlocked country, covering 84k square kilometres. The terrain in Austria is highly mountainous with only 32% of the country below 500m. Just over 40% of Austria is covered by forest, while one-fifth of the country is pasture and meadow located at various altitudes.

Austria has a predominantly alpine climate, with cold winters and warm summers. If travelling to Austria in the winter months, be sure to pack some warm clothing.

World Heritage sites

Austria has 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You can view the official list of the sites here (https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/at). While every site is worth a look, here are a few highlights:

  • Wachau cultural landscape, a stretch of the Danube Valley which preserves many architectural and agricultural traces of its historic evolution
  • The Semmering Railway, which spans over 41km of high mountains, and stands as a stunning achievement of civil engineering
  • Beech Forests of the Carpathians

Festivals and events

With its storied history and famous cultural institutions, Austria has many festivals and events each and every year.

The Viennale international film festival has been running annually since 1960, and attacts filmmakers and film buffs from all over the world. Mörbisch Operetta Festival is a festival dedicated to hosting operattas, and takes place at the visually-stunning locale of Lake Neusiedl.

The International Art Fair is hosted annually in Vienna every autumn, and features a dazzling array of artworks and installations by internationally-renowned artists.

Eating and Drinking

Wienerschnitzel is the nation’s most famous culinary export, with each region having their own version on this ubiquitous Austrian dish. Numerous other Austrian dishes centre around meat, including Tafelspitz, Vienna Wurst, and Austrian Goulash, the local take on the famous Central European meat stew. Other savoury offerings include Erdäpfelsalat (potato salad) and spargel (spring asparagus). If you’re in the mood for something sweeter, there is no shortage of mouth-watering deserts, including apple strudels, kaiserschmarrn and sachertorte (Viennese chocolate cake with apricot jam).

Austria is credited with introducing coffee to Europe in the form of its coffee houses, and coffee remains an integral part of Austrian social life. Beer is popularly consumed throughout the country, while schnapps are sometimes served at the end of a meal.

Health and Safety

Generally Austria is safe to travel around in, though always exercise common sense while travelling.

Electrical supply

Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adapter. Austria operates on a 230 supply voltage and 50Hz. Austria uses both the Type C and Type F plug, so be sure you have an adapter handy as needed.

Small group tour of Ancient Turkey

The geographical wonders offered by Iceland and Greenland left me in awe. The grandeur and spectacle of the countryside is breathtaking. Our leader (Rob) was excellent: well-researched, friendly, organized and good-humoured.

It is hard to believe that such a small country can contain so much dramatic scenery. Icecaps and glaciers, huge waterfalls, volcanos and hot bubbling mud, and those wonderful fjords and high mountain passes

Every day was different with so much to see and do. Volcanoes, craters (including the pseudo ones), bubbling mud pools, and the active Strokkur Geyser, the bird life, black sand beaches, and those beautiful Icelandic horses. The time flew by...

We felt safe in Turkey and found the people friendly and helpful. Prices were excellent and the food almost universally magnificent. There is so much to see in the natural and built environment and the wonderful archaeological sites. It is sad to see the ordinary people and businesses suffering from the lack of tourists. Mary B. Our guide Filiz was wonderful, very well informed, historical insights very helpful, her care for our well being exceptional. Could not have wished for a better tour leader.

What time zone is Austria in?

Austria has a single time zone, Central European Standard Time (UTC+1). Austria observes daylight saving time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.

Is tipping customary in Austria?

If you’re on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you don’t need to give it a second thought. However, in your free time, or if travelling independently, it’s essential that you tip an appropriate amount for services. Tipping is fairly common in Austria, with some restaurants and hotels including a service charge with the bill. Tipping of taxi drivers is also common, typically done at 10% of the fare.

What is internet access like in Austria?

Internet access is easily accessible, and most hotels, cafes and bars will offer it.

Can I use my mobile phone in Austria?

Check with your cell phone provider to see whether you’re able to make calls and use data while in Austria. Many providers will allow you to pay a daily fee that allows you to make calls and check the internet while only being charged your regular rates. However, be certain to inform your provider that you’re heading overseas, because just like a bank they can turn off your service as a result of unusual activity.

Which are the best cultural experiences in Austria?

Austria offers a wide range of cultural experiences. Museums, architecture, music and art – Austra is not short of cultural history and events.

Salzburg – the birthplace of Mozart, full of churches, castles and palaces, with an old town now a UNESCO world heritage site.

Vienna – Austria’s capital is famous for its cultural events, imperial traditions and modern architecture.

Christmas markets – from the middle of November until the end of the year – do not miss the magical Christmas markets, full of seasonal treats.

Museum of fine arts, Vienna – the Museum of fine Arts in Vienna has an unrivalled collection of old masters, including a vast selection of works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. You will also find Ancient Egyptian and Greek and Roman Antiquities and Medieval Art housed in this grand Ringstraße building.

Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna – The Habsburgs’ summer residence is Austria’s most popular tourist attraction. Take a guided tour through the Imperial ceremonial rooms or stroll through the freely accessible gardens.

The Vienna boys choir – The Vienna Boys Choir is one of the most iconic cultural institutions in the country. A foundation charter issued by Emperor Maximilian I in 1498. Ever since, the Vienna Boys’ Choir has been a fixture in Austrian musical life.

Responsible travel tips for Austria

  • Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice. Although many locals speak English, the more you know of the native language, the greater your experience of the country will be.
  • Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Museums and galleries are often closed on Mondays. Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Consider contacting your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of euros in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.

Switzerland mustsee v2

Matterhorn:

World famous and the symbol for Switzerland, this mountain is the most photographed in the world. It faces the four cardinal directions and is the tenth highest mountain in Switzerland, but because it has a pyramid shape it is very challenging to climb. The first ascent was in 1865 and cost the lives of 4 out of 7 alpinists. It gets its German name from the words matte meaning meadow and horn meaning peak.

Switzerland mustsee2 v2

This village is like no other. It lies at the foot of what is probably the world’s most famous mountain. It also is located in an enormous hiking and ski region, making it a great vacation spot, even in the summer. This is a car-free zone vacation spot, making it possible to preserve its historical features as well.

Switzerland ms3

As the capital of Switzerland it has managed to retain its historic features. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It features 4 miles/6 km of arcades, or as the locals like to call it ‘Lauben,’ making it the longest weather-sheltered shopping in Europe. They also hold the seat of Switzerland’s government, many festivals, a bear park, and beautiful historic buildings that line the streets.

Switzerland ms4

This gateway to central Switzerland sits on Lake Lucerne and has a view of the mountain from wherever you are. Aside from the view it has the Chapel Bridge which is one of Europe’s oldest wooden bridges. A tourist favorite is to visit its souvenir and watch shops, which Switzerland is known for.

Destination Must-Do's

Switzerland md1

Swiss Chocolate:

It is only expected that the country that created chocolate is the country that consumes the most chocolate as well. It was created by adding milk to chocolate to try to reduce the cost and make it more palatable, which lead to milk chocolate. Switzerland now has over seven major chocolate companies. The best part is if you are a chocolate lover you can tour these companies and try their many different chocolates.

Switzerland md2

Swiss fondue:

Swiss fondue was created by local villagers with limited access to fresh foods in the winter. They discovered that if you heated the aged cheese with wines, garlic, and herbs then dipped your stale bread it would soften in the flavorful cheese mixture. Families would cook together in one pot and eat by the warm fire, becoming a Swiss winter tradition over time known as fondue.

Switzerland md3

GoldenPass:

This train ride is like a day vacation. You experience two languages, three regions, and eight lakes. The company focuses on journey and comfort not just transportation. It has seven different lines you can choose from, with the most famous being the panoramic that has panoramic windows that allow you to be one with the landscape. The other is the chocolate train which is a first class trip that lets you experience the production of famous Swiss cheese, the creation of Swiss chocolate, and a chance to see its magnificent castle.

Switzerland md4

Glacier Express:

This may be the slowest express train in the world, but for a reason. There is so much to experience on this journey that they slow it down for you. It takes you from Zermatt to St. Moritz. The train ride is an eight-hour panoramic journey. You travel into the Alps, go through 91 tunnels, and 291 bridges.

A railroad of cells: Computer simulations explain cell movement

by Institute of Science and Technology Austria

A railroad of cells

Looking under the microscope, a group of cells slowly moves forward in a line, like a train on the tracks. The cells navigate through complex environments. A new approach by researchers involving the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) now shows how they do this and how they interact with each other. The experimental observations and the following mathematical concept are published in Nature Physics .

The majority of the cells in the human body cannot move. Some specific ones, however, can go to different places. For example, in wound healing, cells move through the body to repair damaged tissue. They sometimes travel alone or in different group sizes.

Although the process is increasingly understood, little is known about how cells interact while traveling and how they collectively navigate the complex environments found in the body. An interdisciplinary team of theoretical physicists at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) and experimentalists from the University of Mons in Belgium now has new insights.

Much like social dynamics experiments, where understanding the interactions of a small group of people is easier than analyzing an entire society, the scientists studied the traveling behavior of a small group of cells in well-defined in vitro surroundings, i.e. outside a living organism, in a Petri dish equipped with interior features. Based on their findings, they developed a framework of interaction rules.

Cells travel in trains

David Brückner rushes back to his office to grab his laptop. "I think it's better to show some videos of our experiments," he says and presses play.

The video shows a Petri dish. Microstripes—one-dimensional lanes guiding cell movement —are printed on the substrate beside a zebrafish scale made up of numerous cells. Special wound-healing cells, known as "keratocytes" start to stretch away from the scale, forming branches into the lanes.

"At first, cells stick together through adhesive molecules on their surface—it's like they're holding hands," explains Brückner. Suddenly, the bond breaks off, and the cells assemble into tiny groups, moving forward like trains along tracks.

"The length of the train is always different. Sometimes it's two, sometimes it's ten. It depends on the initial conditions."

Eléonore Vercurysse and Sylvain Gabriele from the University of Mons in Belgium observed this phenomenon while investigating keratocytes and their wound-healing features within different geometrical patterns. To help interpret these puzzling observations, they reached out to theoretical physicists David Brückner and Edouard Hannezo at ISTA.

Cells have steering wheels

"There's a gradient within each cell that determines where the cell is going. It's called 'polarity' and it's like the cell's very own steering wheel," says Brückner. "Cells communicate their polarity to neighboring cells, allowing them to move in concert." But how they do so has remained a big puzzle in the field.

Brückner and Hannezo started brainstorming. The two scientists developed a mathematical model combining a cell's polarity, its interactions, and the geometry of its surroundings. They then transferred the framework into computer simulations , which helped them visualize different scenarios.

A railroad of cells

The first thing the scientists in Austria looked at was the speed of the cell trains. The simulation revealed that the speed of the trains is independent of their length, whether they consist of two or ten cells.

"Imagine if the first cell did all the work, dragging the others behind it; the overall performance would decrease," says Hannezo. "But that's not the case. Within the trains, all the cells are polarized in the same direction. They are aligned and in sync about their movement and smoothly move forward." In other words, the trains operate like an all-wheel drive rather than just a front-wheel drive.

As a next step, the theoreticians examined the effects of increasing the width of the lanes and the cell clusters in their simulations. Compared to cells moving in a single file, clusters were much slower. The explanation is quite simple: the more cells are clustered together, the more they bump into each other. These collisions cause them to polarize away from each other and move in opposite directions. The cells are not aligned properly, which disrupts the flow of movement and drastically influences the overall speed. This phenomenon was also observed in the Belgian lab (in vitro experiments).

Dead end? No problem for cell clusters

From an efficiency standpoint, it sounds like moving in clusters is not ideal. However, the model predicted that it also had its benefits when cells navigate through complex terrain, as they do, for instance, in the human body. To test this, the scientists added a dead end, both in the experiments and in the simulations.

"Trains of cells get to the dead end quickly, but struggle to change direction. Their polarization is well aligned, and it's very hard for them to agree on switching around," says Brückner. "Whereas in the cluster, quite a few cells are already polarized in the other direction, making the change of direction way easier."

Trains or clusters?

Naturally, the question arises: when do cells move in clusters, and when do they move in trains? The answer is that both scenarios are observed in nature. For example, some developmental processes rely on clusters of cells moving from one side to the other, while others depend on small trains of cells moving independently.

"Our model doesn't only apply to a single process. Instead, it is a broadly applicable framework showing that placing cells in an environment with geometric constraints is highly instructive, as it challenges them and allows us to decipher their interactions with each other," Hannezo adds.

A small train packed with information

Recent publications by the Hannezo group suggest that cell communication propagates in waves—an interplay between biochemical signals, physical behavior, and motion. The scientists' new model now provides a physical foundation for these cell-to-cell interactions, possibly aiding in understanding the big picture.

Based on this framework, the collaborators can delve deeper into the molecular players involved in this process. According to Brückner, the behaviors revealed by these small cell trains can help us understand large-scale movements, such as those seen in entire tissues.

In order to better understand fundamental processes, for example, in the fields of neuroscience, immunology, or genetics, the use of animals in research is indispensable. No other methods, such as in silico models, can serve as an alternative. The animals are raised, kept, and treated according to the strict regulations of the respective countries where the research is conducted.
