The Rajwada is located beside the busy road and is the first thing that grabs everyone's attention. The main entrance of the Rajwada is separated from the bustling road outside by an exterior wall, a garden, and a sidewalk. The first impression of this Holkar palace is always overwhelming. The Rajwada's seven-story facade is astounding in its opulence.

Kanch Mandir

The spectacular Kanch Mandir made entirely of glass and mirrors is one of the prime tourist attractions in Indore. Early in the 20th century, wealthy businessman Seth Hukumchand constructed this Jain temple. Everything in the room, including the doors, floors, ceiling, and even the paintings and murals are made using glass. The ceiling is embellished with glass lamps and cut-glass chandeliers, while patterned ceramic tiles can be seen through the floor. The murals reflect tales from the Mahabharata and Jain literature. The three Tirthankara statues - Adinath, Shantinath, and Chandraprabha - made of dazzling black onyx are multiplied to an infinite number in the Mandir's distinctive glass room on the top floor.

Bada Ganpati

The Bada Ganapati Temple is located in a busy neighbourhood west of the Kanch Mandir and is true to its name. The 8-m-tall Ganesha idol was placed in this modest temple in 1875 by a resident of Ujjain. In addition to bricks and lime, the idol is supposedly made of fenugreek seed, soil gathered from the seven Mokshapuris, or holy Hindu pilgrimages, (Ayodhya, Mathura, Mayapuri, Kashi, Kanchi, Avantika, and Dwarka), as well as the powder of five gems, or Pancha Ratna, (diamond, emerald, pearl, ruby, and topaz).

Lalbagh Palace

Lalbagh Palace is one of the most impressive structures of the Holkar dynasty. Spread over 71.63 acres, the Palace was built between 1886 and 1921, during the reigns of Tukoji Rao II, Shivaji Rao and Tukoji Rao III. The architecture of Lal Bagh Palace reflects the European style and the imposing gate of the palace is built as a replica of the main gate of Buckingham palace; only it is twice as large.

Annapurna Mandir

The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai served as the inspiration for Annapurna Mandir. The temple is situated near Lalbagh Palace and its complex boasts an impressive entryway with four life-size elephants supporting an intricate Gopuram ( a structure of tower, usually ornate, at the entrance of a temple) which is typical of Dravidian temples in south India. Hindu gods and goddesses are depicted in minute plaster carvings that cover the entire Gopuram. The complex's focal point is the main temple, which is devoted to Annapurna Devi. It has a pink dome and colourful reliefs from Hindu mythology decorating its walls.

Khajrana Ganesh Temple

Rani Ahilyabai Holkar built the Khajrana Ganesha Temple of Indore. Huge crowds of people typically visit this temple on Wednesday and Sunday to offer prayers. According to the legend, the idol was hidden from Aurangzeb in a well. In 1735, Ahilyabai Holkar of the Holkar dynasty of the Maratha Empire retrieved the idol from the well and had a temple built in its place. It is a local saying that once a devotee bow down to Ganesha, all their desires are granted by the lord. Vinayak Chathurthi, the primary festival is celebrated in the temple in a magnificent way in the months of August and September.

How to reach Indore?

By Air: The airport in Indore is located 10 kilometres west of the city. Flights to Mumbai, Delhi, Bhopal, Pune, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Raipur, Jaipur, and Kolkata are available every day.

By Road: Two national highways, NH-3, which connects Agra to Mumbai, and NH- 59, which connects Ahmedabad to Indore, meet in Indore. Most locations in Madhya Pradesh are accessible by road. The Sarwate bus stop is close to the train station, and the Gangwal bus stop is three kilometres to the west of Chhatri Bagh. Indore, the second-largest city in Madhya Pradesh, has been a buzzing trade center since ancient times. Located on the edge of the Malwa plateau in Central India, Indore city was founded in 1715 by local landlords and named after the Indreshwar temple that they built a few years later.

In 1733, the Holkars won Indore as part of their war booty in their conquest of the Malwa region. They established their capital here, and reigned over the Malwa region until the advent of the East India Company rule in the mid 18th century. The city also served as the perfect trade link between Delhi and Deccan during medieval times.

Step Back in Time at the Rajwada

The Rajwada palace, built by Malhar Rao Holkar of the Holkar dynasty in 1747, is a seven-story royal residence. The palace has been rebuilt at least three times, having been damaged by fire during the 1800s and burned down due to rioting in the 80s. However, it has gotten a facelift recently, and is a marvelous architectural space that will take you back in time.

The Rajwada's expansive courtyard, palatial corridors, and fusion architecture of Maratha, Mughal, and French influences have been enticing travelers for years. While the ground floor has a temple dedicated to Malhari Marthand, the upper floors serve as a museum comprising of artifacts from a glorious reign of the Holkars. A huge iron door with intricately carved Rajasthani jharokhas on either side welcomes visitors to the palace's precincts.

Admire the Architecture of Chhatris

Chhatris are raised cenotaphs with domes, designed in the unique Rajput architectural style. They are built over the cremation sites of royals as well as other wealthy and distinguished people of society. Pray at a Temple Built by a Queen

Queen Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar holds a revered place in the hearts of the people of the Malwa region. Apart from expanding the city of Indore, she also established the capital of Holkars at Maheshwar. The Khajrana Ganesh temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha was built under her patronage in the 17th century, and has since been developed over the years into its present sprawling form.

It is widely believed that Lord Ganesh, the presiding deity at the Khajrana temple, fulfills the wishes of his devotees. Hence, this well-maintained temple of Indore draws huge crowds every single day. Learn About the Past at the Central Museum

Indore's Central Museum has a rich collection of Hindu and Jain sculptures, coins, idols, and scriptures unearthed from various regions of Madhya Pradesh. They mostly belong to the Gupta and Paramara period, which ran from the 9th to the 14th centuries. Apart from these, the museum also has a rich collection of artifacts from the Holkar reign as well as weapons and ammunition.

During the day, the Sarafa Bazaar serves as a hub for shops selling silver and gold jewelry. However, once the shops shut down in the evening, the lane comes alive with food vendors setting up temporary stalls, making it the most visited night market in India.

There are more than 50 dishes on offer, including piping hot gulab jamuns and sabudana khichdi, as well as local delicacies like Bhutte ki kiess and the ubiquitous Poha (made of rice flakes), a favorite dish of the state.

Do stop by the Joshi Dahi Vada stall to watch the cook's trick of swirling the Dahi bada (fried lentil balls dipped in curd) plate without spilling a drop on the floor!

Re-Visit a Bygone Era at Lal Bagh Palace

To the southwest of Indore city, the Lal Bagh Palace—once the residence of the Holkars—is surrounded by a well-manicured sprawling garden of 72 acres. Built between 1886 and 1921 by Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar, the gates of the Lal Bagh Palace are said to have been imported from London and modeled after those of Buckingham Palace. With its preserved chandeliers, vibrantly woven Persian carpets, and colorful murals on its ceilings, the Lal Bagh Palace offers a peek into the life of the erstwhile royals.

A short distance from the palace is the Annapurna temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu goddess of food and nourishment. Nearby is a 700-year-old Banyan tree along with a dargah.

Soak in the Eclectic Street Art

Indore has been given a renovation in recent years with colorful street art and murals adorning the nooks and corners of this smart city. The glittering Kanch Mandir is a Jain temple built by industrialist Seth Hukumchand in the early 20th century. A five-minute walk west of Kanch Mandir is the Bada Ganpati temple, which is supposedly home to the largest Ganesh idol ever installed inside a temple.

Chappan Dukaan is a lane of 56 shops that dish out delectable street food, sweets, and beverages from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. From freshly brewed coffee to Mumbai chaat items, Chappan Dukaan has it all. While here, take a bite out of one of Johnny Hot Dog's famous "hot dogs," which are essentially veggie burgers made with spicy potato patties. This outlet has the distinction of out-selling the likes of McDonald's and Burger King in Asia!

Taste the Delectable Indori Savories

Rajwada Palace

Maheswari and Chanderi sarees 

Madhya Pradesh is home to the two most beautiful forms of Sarees namely Maheshwari and Chanderi. The former hails from Maheshwar and the latter from Chanderi. Both of them are produced in Silk, Cotton and Cotton Silk fabrics which are much desired among women. Along with Dupattas and stoles, both the fabrics can be accessorized into Cushions, Curtains and Bed covers.

Indore always seems like my hometown Vadodara to me. And just like the array of must try street food of Vadodara , there are umpteen options in Indore too. In all my visits to Indore, street food is an integral part. These are some of the most popular must try food in Indore.

• Kopra Patties – Native to Indore is Khopra Patties which is a snack item, deep-fried, to be eaten with lots of green and tamarind chutney. Available at Vijay Chat House at both locations in Sarafa Bazar and also at 56 Dukan. Out of all the places to visit in Indore and things to do in Indore, this should not be missed.
• Bhutte Ka Kees –  This dish mainly looks like Upma, made from Corn cob. Green chillies and coriander add to its taste. Available in many shops at both Sarafa Bazar and 56 Dukan
• Shikanji – Shikanji usually is a lemon drink however Shikanji of Indore is quite different from the conventional one. It’s a creamy drink of milk with lots of dry fruits.
• Garadu – It’s a type of Yam, like sweet potato especially grown during winters. It is deep-fried and eaten as chat with a good blend of chutneys.
• Sabudana Khichdi – Another delectable item to have in Indore is Sabudana Khichdi. It is loaded with deep-fried potato crisps and chutney. Easily available in all food markets in Indore.
• Dal Bafla – Very similar to the Dal Baati of Rajasthan, is Daal Bafla of Malwa region where Indore belongs. It’s more like a Baati however Bafla is boiled.
• Mawa Bati – It’s typically Gulab Jamun but a dry version. This is available in all sweet shops in Indore.
• Poha-Jalebi – An amazing combination which can be eaten at any time of the day. However, most of the sweet shops offer Poha Jalebi during breakfast time.
• Moong Bhajiya – These are yellow lentil fried dumplings. They can be an amazing evening snack to be eaten especially with tea. 
• Hot dog (Johny Hotdog) – Very specific to 56 Dukan, there is a shop called Johny Hotdog. It offers amazing Hotdogs and is very special to the people of Indore.

10 places to visit in Indore

Indore is sacred with some thrilling and wonderful places. The significant city has age-old forts, magnificent palaces and intricately carved temples. Some of the important tourism spots in Indore are; 

It was constructed by the Holkars of the Maratha Empire in 1766, is a seven-storied fortress situated near the Khajuri Bazaar. Both the Maratha and the Mughal styles of structural design can be seen. The structure contains two parts; the first one is located at the heart of the city, whereas the second one is located in the old part of the city.

2. Chattri Bagh

Chhatris, meaning umbrellas, symbolize pride. They particularly have a dome-like structure like the Humayun's Tomb in Delhi and the Taj Mahal in Agra contain many such chhatris. According to historical records, chhatris have their origin in the Hindu and Mughal architecture. In Indore, the chhatris was made in the commemoration of the Holkar rulers.

3. Kanch Mandir

The Kanch Mandir, also known as the Seth Hukamchand Temple, is a pilgrim center for the Jains, constructed using mirrors and glass. The temple is located on the Jawahar Road near the Rajwada.

4. Lalbagh Palace

Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar constructed the Lal Baag Palace in the European style between 1886 and 1921. It is located on the periphery of Indore, to the southwest. Built on the bank of the River Khan, this palace is a three-storied building. 

5. Bada Ganapati

The Bada Ganapati Temple, was built in 1875, consists of one of the largest Ganesha idols in the world - an eight-metre-tall, saffron-coloured statue of Lord Ganesha constructed by bricks, methi dana, limestone, jaggery, mud from the stables of horses and elephants. 

6. Indore Museum

The Indore Museum, also known as the Central Museum, is a Holkar-dynasty building showing one of the handpicked collections from medieval and pre-medieval Indore. The collection includes Hindu sculptures, coins, arms, armours and carved land-titles.

7. Mahatma Gandhi Hall

The Mahatma Gandhi Hall, previously known as the King Edward Hall, has been intended in Indo-Gothic style. It was built in 1904 and consists of a four-faced clock tower, a temple, a library and a children's park. The hall can accommodate around 2,000 people. 

8. Nehru Park

The Nehru Park, resides on the AB Road between Naulakha and Chhawanalso, is a zoological park. It is situated on the banks of River Khan. The park is also famous as Chidiya Ghar zoo. It has a library, swimming pool, battery-operated cars, children's hobby centre, and a mini-train.

9. The Mahakaleshwar Temple

The Mahakaleshwar Temple, the temple of Har Siddhi Mata and the Gopal Mandir be supposed to be on the journey of the spiritual tourist. Mandu, 99 kms from Indore is a significant city with an overabundance of monuments sparkly the royal magnificence of precedent ages.
