Fred. olsen cruise lines to offer british isles and scenic ‘no port’ sailings from dover this summer as it prepares for return to cruising.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has today unveiled a brand new ‘Welcome Back’ programme of cruises to showcase the best of the British Isles this summer, with scenic-only cruises and those with ports of call available on new ship Bolette from Dover.

Bolette will embark on her inaugural sailing with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines from Dover on 16th August, on a three-night, no port ‘Maiden Voyage’. Scenic sailings of the British Isles and chances to step ashore and explore the Orkney and Shetland isles will follow.

Peter Deer, Managing Director at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said:

“We are so excited to be unveiling these new summer cruises today. So often overlooked, our British Isles are home to some of the most wonderful wildlife, and so much spectacular scenery that is best enjoyed from the water.

“We have worked with the Port of Dover and offered sailings from there for many, many years, and we are so pleased that this will be the first port that our new ship Bolette will set sail from. Dover will provide the perfect gateway to our wonderful British Isles, with the beautiful white cliffs as a backdrop as we embark on our new scenic sailings.

“This is an incredibly important milestone for our business, and we can’t wait to welcome our guests on board our new-look fleet this summer.”

Sonia Limbrick, Head of Cruise at the Port of Dover, said:

“We are thrilled to see Fred. Olsen return to Dover, having really missed the Fred. Olsen team and guests.

“We are also looking forward to welcoming Bolette for her first ever sailing with Fred. Olsen – another milestone in our long history with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. We are very proud to have been chosen for this special occasion.”

When is the best time to visit the British Isles?

The best time to take a cruise holiday to the British Isles depends on the region you want to explore and the specific experiences you’re seeking.

The summer months, from June to August, offer the warmest and most predictable weather, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities, sightseeing, and festivals. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so popular destinations like London and Edinburgh can be crowded

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are also great times to visit, as the weather is generally mild, and there are fewer crowds. These seasons offer a chance to explore historical sites, enjoy beautiful gardens in full bloom, and savor the vibrant autumn foliage. Winter (December to February) can be a magical time to experience the British Isles, with festive holiday markets and cozy atmosphere, especially in cities like London and Dublin. However, the weather can be cold and wet during this period.

It’s also essential to consider factors like local holidays, festivals and peak tourist seasons. It’s always a good idea to consult with one of our cruise agents who will give you the best advice!

Fred Olsen Bolette

Bolette  is one of the largest ships, by overall size, in the fleet. With its warm, welcoming atmosphere and timeless style, and classic open deck spaces providing a place to fully immerse yourself in the magic of ocean cruising.

Bolette  provides guests with plenty of space to relax within the bars, lounges, theatres and out on the open decks. In the Observatory, you’ll be able to enjoy one of the Signature Experiences of scenic cruising, through the large panoramic windows.

Aboard the smaller, friendlier ships you’ll find there’s plenty of room to stretch out by the pool, enjoy a drink and great conversation with like-minded guests, and make the most of your time away. Sailing with hundreds, not thousands, of others allows you to get ashore faster too, and make the most of each destination.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
