Something is stirring in downtown Tucson. That’s no great surprise perhaps: Calexico have been sending out missives from the desert for 20 years now, Giant Sand for even longer than that, and the Green on Red revival is surely overdue. These three giants of American popular music ask questions of the form, chiefly because of where they are situated. Let us remind ourselves that this isn’t a big city in the American sense (it’s the country’s 33rd largest), but that its hinterland is indeed as big as it gets. For an hour south, Mexico starts. And this is where things get interesting.

Born in Nogales, Arizona, raised in Nogales, Sonora, multi-instrumentalist and band-leader Sergio Mendoza grew up listening to the Mexican regional styles jostling for headspace in a young, musicmad mind – cumbia mainly, but mambo, rancheras and mariachi too. The border is always a fierce arena of exchange, both commercial and cultural, and so there was American music too. At one point ‘rock and roll, the classics’, as Mendoza himself deadpans, seemed to win out and he stopped playing those ‘Latin styles’ for a good decade and a half.

The return to those sounds was a strong one in 2012’s Mambo Mexicano, co-produced by Mendoza and Joey Burns of Calexico – a band for which Mendoza has become an increasingly integral touring and recording member. While that record had a studied air, tentative in parts (as befits the renewal of an old love affair), ¡Vamos A Guarachar! (2016) is another beast entirely: by turns raucous (‘Cumbia Volcadora’, featuring Mexican electronic pioneer Camilo Lara), tender (‘Misterio’, surely Salvador Duran’s finest moment with the band so far) and plain serious fun, as in ‘Contra La Marea’ and ‘Mapache’, it also bears a robust electronic edge, a keen pop sensibility and all the hallmarks of Mendoza’s love of 60s rock, with the closing track, ‘Shadows of the Mind’, sure to be included if anyone decides to update the Nuggets collection for the 21st century. This is roundabout way of saying that it appears to have everything, but never too much of anything. Focused, fierce and beautifully executed by a superbly drilled set of musicians, it is a record that fully matches the band’s explosive live performances.

Nogales, Sonora, Nogales, Arizona: this is what the border looks like here – for now. To talk about borders and the diasporas they create, is to be pitched headlong into our era’s most urgent debate, marked by Trump’s lurid obscenities and the lines being hastily reinstated across Europe. Orkesta Mendoza’s contribution to that debate is to show us what the border sounds like and what masterpieces can be achieved by honest cultural exchange. What we decide to do with that information is up to us. With this record, however, we’ll have an awful lot of fun deciding.

You could, of course, take the trip to Tucson yourself, to the home of this essential set of field recordings. The scene hangs out together, so … if the stars align and their frantic tour schedules permit, you might see any number of folks from Calexico, Giant Sand or up-and-coming cumbia rockers Xixa deep in conversation somewhere in town with a quiet young man in black. That’s Sergio. Right now, in this endless game of Tucson tag, Orkesta Mendoza are IT.

Sergio Mendoza is a producer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and Latin music pioneer.  The southern Arizona native’s musical career stems from humble beginnings, holds a deep connection to his roots, and has carried the energy of a collective through his musical movements.

Growing up on the international border in Ambos Nogales, Sergio was exposed to a wide range of music from a very early age.  He attributes his influence to a sense of place; where he was born and raised and sounds he heard playing on the radio from Bordertown stations.

Harnessing the spirit of collaboration, Mendoza connects with musicians, globally, on projects that traverse different styles as he re-invents sub-genres of Latin music.  Arranging projects like Esto Sí Es Cumbia for Los Ángeles Azules, the tribute album Un Mundo Raro:  Las Canciones de José Alfredo Jiménez, and co-producing Edge of the Sun and El Mirador with Calexico, showcase this coming together of musicians from all regions to form a distinctive sound.

Sergio has successfully fashioned his own unique taste and existence into what we now experience as Orkesta Mendoza; a blend of Indie Rock and Latin music that has become a cornerstone of Tucson culture. He works hard to support Tucson in being an epicenter for new music development, bringing Latin artists like Chetes, Gabby Moreno and Camilo Lara of Mexican Institute of Sound to share the stage.

Mendoza is here tonight in between tours for both Orkesta Mendoza and Calexico. He is proud to present an evening of original music with friends and visionaries in their own right, featuring singer and percussionist Ozzy Acosta.

On Friday, December 8th, KXCI will celebrate its 40th Anniversary at the historic El Casino Ballroom with  Orkesta Mendoza featuring Gaby Moreno.  Orkesta Mendoza is a Latin big band from Tucson, Arizona founded by singer and guitarist Sergio Mendoza in 2009. Using Latin percussion, accordion, brass, and steel guitars, the band’s style, dubbed “indie mambo”, combines ranchera, cumbia, psychedelic and indie rock.

Gaby Moreno is a Latin GRAMMY-winning Guatemalan-born singer-songwriter, producer, film composer, and guitarist. Moreno performs many genres including Latin, alternative, blues, folk, and Americana in both Spanish and English.

Gaby Moreno performed in our Congress Street Studio backed by Brian Lopez and Sergio Mendoza in March 2023 ahead of her performance opening for Los Lobos. This  video  captures her songwriting, passion, and playfulness.

Nogales-born band leader Sergio Mendoza has long wanted to create a special evening for KXCI and celebrating KXCI’s 40th Anniversary was the perfect reason to invite his compañera Gaby Moreno.

Doors open at 6:00 pm, and music starts at 7:00 pm. Advance general admission tickets are  $40 for KXCI Members and $45 in advance for the general public. Tickets can be purchased at all Bookmans locations, online at KXCI.org, and at the door. All tickets will be $50 at the door. Food will be available for purchase.

All proceeds support KXCI’s mission to connect the communities of Tucson and Southern Arizona to each other and to the world with informative, engaging, and creative community-based programming. KXCI Executive Director Elva De La Torre will emcee the show.

Contepomi’s first Pumas team set to play fresh France faces in Mendoza

MENDOZA, Argentina (AP) — Argentina has a good chance to beat France in rugby on Saturday for the first time in eight years, ending a four-match losing run.

France has chosen to debut eight of its 22 uncapped players in the 42-man touring party, after leaving at home most of its Rugby World Cup squad. There’s no Antoine Dupont, Gregory Alldritt, Uini Atonio, Gael Fickou or Damian Penaud.

But new Pumas coach Felipe Contepomi has urged his side not to underestimate France, to see the jersey and not the names.

“The risk is that these are opportunities that are presented to many of them (France players) and they will want to take advantage of them,” Contepomi said. “That is why we are not focusing on names but on what France is. They have been in the top four of the rankings for a long time. We are going to face that team, France, beyond the names.”

After replacing coach Michael Cheika following the World Cup semifinal run, former Cheika assistant Contepomi has stressed continuity in his first selection. The starting XV has been turned over but still has 14 World Cup players. Wing Bautista Delguy has been recalled for his first test since November 2022.

In the absence of goalkicking sharpshooters Emiliano Boffelli (injured) and Nicolas Sanchez (retired), flyhalf Santiago Carreras will take the shots at goal, with backup from Benetton’s Tomas Albornoz.

Two could make their debut off the bench, lock Franco Molina from the local Dogos XV, and back-rower Bautista Pedemonte, who helped Vannes win promotion back to the French Top 14. Eight Pumas play for French clubs.

Rested or unavailable Pumas include Juan Martin Gonzalez, Guido Petti, Tomas Lavanini, Lucio Cinti, and backs Juan Cruz Mallia and Santiago Chocobares, who won their third Top 14 title with Toulouse.

None of the Toulouse and Bordeaux players from that final on June 28 were brought to Argentina by France coach Fabien Galthie. But he picked 11 from beaten semifinalists La Rochelle and Stade Francais.

Only five World Cup players have made the trip: Prop Jean-Baptiste Gros and flyhalf Antoine Hastoy are starting, and backs Baptiste Couilloud and Melvyn Jaminet are in the reserves. Arthur Vincent missed out.

The only survivors from France’s last match, the 33-31 Six Nations win over England in March, were fullback Leo Barre and props Georges-Henri Colombe and Sebastien Taofifenua.

The new caps include Pau lock Hugo Auradou, aged 20, and an all-rookie back row: Racing 92’s Jordan Joseph, Montpellier’s Lenni Nouchi, aged 20, and La Rochelle No. 8 Oscar Jegou, 21. Nouchi was promoted after a late withdrawal by Judicael Cancoriet, who was set to play his first test in six years.

The new backs were center Antoine Frisch, who came from Emerging Ireland and Munster but has signed for Toulon; and wingers Lester Etien, 29, from Stade Francais and Theo Attissogbe, 19, from Pau.

Lyon lock Mickael Guillard could also debut off a bench including six forwards.

The team is captained by scrumhalf Baptiste Serin, easily the most experienced player with 44 caps. His last test start was in 2020.

“A tour is a growth accelerator,” Galthie said.

“From previous tours, in Australia, in Japan, some ‘premium’ players were born. I’m willing to bet that five or six players will be ‘premium’ for future years. I’m sure we have some gems here.”

France also plays Uruguay in Montevideo on Wednesday, followed by a second test against Argentina in Velez.
