The main selling points for Jigmechu are the cool winter weather, camping and picnic sites on the banks of the Wanghcu river, and a pilgrimage visit to Jigmechu Ney .

Natural Wonders & Attractions of Jigmechu

Jigmechu is a beautiful river that demarcates the territorial boundaries of Chhukha and Dagana , ending at the lower part of Bayul kuenzang village after joining with the Raidak river. Bayul kuenzang and Sharphu are two villages that have breathtaking landscapes, and people coexist in harmony. The suspension bridge of the Raidak river at Lamey connects these two villages. The Jigmechu area is rich in biodiversity, and the subtropical climate and good weather conditions make it one of the most attractive natural sites.

The driving distance from Gedu to Jigmechu is 49 kilometers, Thimphu to Jigmechu is 150 kilometers, and Lamoizingkha to Jigmechu is approximately 19 kilometers. The hot summer and pleasant winter, beautiful landscape scenery, hospitable people living in traditional houses, enjoying the Bhutanese way of life, and conventional farming make the village even more attractive.

Visitors can also enjoy a unique local drink called Tongba made out of millet or barley and various authentic Bhutanese dishes made out of either millet, barley, buckwheat, or maize cooked adequately in a traditional way pot over a conventional oven.

Jigmechu Ecotourism Campsite: Services and Accommodations

The Ministry of Home approved Jigmechhu Ecotourism Campsite in Chhukha as a formal international tourist destination. The campsite is located in the Sharphu village of Lamey and perched along the banks of the Wangchhu River in the Darla Gewog. It can be reached in four hours via Gedu-Sonambja, or a mere 19 km from Lhamoidzingkha Drungkhag in Dagana.

The announcement was met with enthusiasm by the campsite members and the Jigmechhu community, as the number of visitors to the area has steadily increased. Over 1,000 visitors were recorded from October of the previous year to the present, which invigorated the local economy. However, the camp manager, Wangchuk Dorji, emphasized that improvements must be made to the services provided for the benefits to reach the surrounding communities. This will require both funding and time. The campsite will be closed during the monsoon season (May-September) due to inclement weather.

Tour operators have shown interest in offering bird-watching tours , as the area is a designated birding hotspot, with over 300 species of birds, including the endangered white-bellied heron and peacock, as well as barking deer, four types of hornbills, and various species of butterflies.

Currently, the five founding members of the campsite are providing services to visitors, with three campsites and tent accommodations available. Visitors may choose to pitch their tents and prepare their own meals. The members aim to enhance the food and lodging services and improve the washroom facilities at the campsite. Improvements to road quality may commence soon, as the plan was recently approved.

Chhukha Dzongdag Minjur Dorji noted that the campsite is located near major tourist entry and exit points, Phuentsholing and Paro, but has yet to fully benefit due to its remote location. The Deputy Chief Economic Development Officer of the dzongkhag, Sangay Thinley, revealed that developing Jigmechhu ecotourism has been a lengthy journey, but the dzongkhag administration has been striving for the last four years to make it a reality.

The dzongkhag administration has sought support from the Bhutan Foundation and RSPN to construct two eco-lodges for guests, with the hope that they will be operational in the next season. At present, there are no registered homestays in the area, but the registration of two homestays is underway.

The Local Community & Sustainable Tourism at Jigmechu

Visitors may immerse themselves in the local culture by staying in homestays, birdwatching, trying local drinks, fly-fishing, and even embarking on a one-hour hike to the pilgrimage site of Ami Nye , dedicated to the local deity Aum Yangtham .

Jigmechu Campsite provides an excellent camping experience. The campers can either carry their tents or rent them from the organizers. Dining is optional, and guests can either choose to cook independently or ask the Jigmechu Campsite Management group to cater food for them. One should not miss the Jigmechu Fish Curry, which was the best curry served at the campsite!

The local community caters to the campsite, so all the revenue generated from the camp goes back to the locals and their families. Although providing camping service is new in the locality, the hosts are always eager to provide the guests with the best camping experiences. The group also comprises local guides.

Exploring the Culture & Wildlife of Jigmechu: Activities and Tours

A local expert will guide visitors on a day excursion to the nearest pilgrimage site called Jigmechu Nye , which remains untrodden. According to the locals, the unique natural cave was revealed by Terton Drugdra Dorji . It is known as the mediation cave of Guru Rinpoche , Khandro Jetsen Drolma , and other revered saints.

Visitors can also enjoy a walk along the river bank and glimpse exotic wildlife, especially birds. If you are into stargazing, the night at the campsite best provides you with a view of twinkling stars. One of the local guides is well versed with the names of the stars in the local language. As simple as the name of the famous six sister stars is known as ‘karma Mindu’ etc.

New summer camp offers kids great wilderness adventure

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A new series of youth summer camps is starting in the Topeka area next week.

Ed Popkess with Cedoga Outfitters visited Eye on NE Kansas to tell us what makes the camp unique.

Ed says the sessions are four days each, running 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. The theme is The Great Wilderness Adventure, with participants doing activities like archery, fishing and tree identification. He says it’s all done with a Christian basis.

The camps are for students entering grades 3 to 8. Week-long sessions are held in the Wakarusa area and start June 10, 17, and 24, and July 8, 15, and 22. Cost is $125.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Jack Grealish and James Maddison have missed the cut for England ’s Euro 2024 squad, with the long-serving Harry Maguire failing in his battle to be fit for Germany.

Gareth Southgate named an initial 33-man training squad that needed trimming to 26 players by 11pm on Friday, just over an hour after the final friendly against Iceland finishes.

But rather than wait until Uefa’s deadline, the England boss decided to announce the final cut on the eve of the Wembley send-off.

Gareth Southgate announced his official England squad for Euro 2024 on Thursday evening with the big news being the omissions of Jack Grealish and James Maddison who both picked for the squad at the previous major tournament, World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

The England boss named a 33-player preliminary squad for two warm-up matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland knowing that he would need to cut seven players ahead of the tournament. The squad announcement was due to take place on Saturday morning but as news filtered out of the camp that some big names had been cut the FA decided to bring forward the reveal.

Along with Maddison and Grealish, Harry Maguire will play no part at Euro 2024 with goalkeeper James Trafford, defenders Jarell Quansah and Jarrad Branthwaite and Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones the other players to be omitted.

Here is a detailed dive into who’s on the plane and who will be missing out:

England have selected youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton in a youthful squad for Euro 2024, as Gareth Southgate axed several established names.

The manager left out a raft of high-profile players include James Maddison, Jack Grealish and the injured Harry Maguire from his final 26 players, having already axed Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson and Ben Chilwell from his training squad.

Wharton’s Crystal Palace teammate Eberechi Eze, West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa and Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon have all made the final squad. Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez and Ivan Toney also made the cut.

Ivan Toney gets the nod and will bring penalty expertise

The one area of the squad we haven’t yet analysed is the front line. The wingers make some sense, with Southgate going for the form and energy of Bowen and Gordon over the experience of Grealish and Maddison.

The more interesting pick is Ivan Toney, who was perhaps one of the three ‘additional’ players after squads were expanded from 23 to 26 by Uefa in April. That allowed Southgate to take an extra specialist striker in case of injuries.

As well as cover, Toney also provides a useful option off the bench either as a battering ram in the box to score, or as a penalty taker, given his prowess from the spot. Here is a bit of analysis looking at exactly that:

James Maddison has acknowledged he is distraught at being dropped from the England squad ahead of Euro 2024 this summer - and says he believes he offers enough to warrant a place in the 26-man squad.

The Tottenham Hotspur playmaker was among 33 chosen by Gareth Southgate in a large preliminary squad, but was informed he’d be missing out of the eventual group heading to Germany and departed the training camp, despite being in line to start against Iceland in the final pre-tournament warm-up fixture on Friday.

Maddison took to social media to explain he felt he could “bring something different” to the Three Lions group and suggested he had been a “mainstay” throughout qualifying - he appeared in three of England’s eight games and was an unsused sub in three more - but also noted his displays during the second half of 2023/24 were not up to scratch.

Harry Maguire has been ruled out of Euro 2024 with a calf injury in a major blow to Gareth Southgate while the England manager has dropped Jack Grealish from his squad for the tournament in Germany.

Southgate had already informed James Maddison and Curtis Jones that they had failed to make the cut as he had to reduce a 33-man training party to a 26-player group to take, while goalkeeper James Trafford and centre-back Jarell Quansah are also expected to be omitted.

But Maguire’s absence will affect Southgate’s plans after the defender was a stalwart in his sides for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and Euro 2020, when he was named in the team of the tournament and when England reached the final.

Harry Maguire has written a post explaining why he will not be going to Euro 2024.

“I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.” Maguire wrote on social media. “Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it.

“Simply, I am absolutely gutted. For me, representing England is the highest honour. It means everything to me. If I can’t help the team as a player, I will support them as a fan – along with the rest of the country. Go and win it boys.

“Next, I will return to the supervision of the Manchester United medical team in order to prepare for next season.”

Harry Maguire ruled out of Euros with injury

As for Maguire, the noises were mostly positive coming out of Old Trafford at the end of the season, and the suggestion seemed to be that he would miss England’s warm-up games but might be fit for the group stages.

However, it seems like that won’t be possible, and his absence opens up a huge opportunity for someone in defence alongside John Stones.

It seems a long time ago that Roy Hodgson’s England traipsed off the pitch in Nice having lost 2-1 to minnows Iceland at Euro 2016.

It proved to be Hodgson’s last hurrah and, following a short stint under Sam Allardyce, Southgate has since changed perception of the England side and taken the nation closer than ever to claiming a second major trophy.

Iceland have not qualified this time around but could have another impact on England if they were to get a positive result at Wembley on Friday night.

Western New York’s Chautauqua Institution celebrates 150 years as ‘summer camp for grown-ups’

CHAUTAUQUA, New York – One hundred fifty years ago this summer, an inventor from Akron and his Methodist minister invited Sunday school teachers from across the country to gather on a small lake in western New York.

They’ve been gathering ever since.

In addition to religious programming, there’s now opera and an orchestra, sailing and golf, lectures and classes.

For nine weeks every summer, as many as 100,000 gather in Chautauqua, New York, a small community with big ideas.

In 1905, President Teddy Roosevelt called the Chautauqua Institution – originally, the Chautauqua Lake Sunday School Assembly – “typical of America at its best.”

More than 100 years later, the institution, an easy two-hour drive from Cleveland, still makes a strong case for civility in a fragmented society.

On July 19, for example, former Speaker of the U.S. House Kevin McCarthy will take the stage with Julian Castro, former Democratic candidate for president, for a conversation on America’s role in the world.

“They will be speaking together,” said Deborah Sunya Moore, senior vice president and chief programming officer for the institution. “It’s not a debate. We are about dialogue, not debate.”

The Chautauqua Institution’s 150th summer season kicks of June 22 and runs through Aug. 25.

During that time, visitor access to the grounds requires a gate fee – this year, it’s more than $100 per day. But for that admission, visitors get access to dozens of programs and activities, from lectures and concerts to religious programming and recreational pursuits.

“It’s summer camp for grown-ups,” said Steve Brown, who’s been gathering here with his family for more than half a century. “It’s a uniquely entertaining destination”

Scott Beresford, manager of groups sales and programs for the institution, said first-time visitors can be intimidated by the options. “There is so much going on, you have to pace yourself,” he said.

Indeed, this year’s summer season features hundreds of performances, lectures, classes, children’s activities and more.

Among the highlights:

* Martina McBride launches the season on June 22, and is followed by a star-studded list of popular entertainers, including the Beach Boys (June 28), Boyz II Men (July 26), Melissa Etheridge and the Indigo Girls (Aug. 16), Wilco (July 5), Stephen Sanchez (Aug. 9), Frankie Valli (July 19) and more.

* Best-selling author and presidential scholar Jon Meacham kicks of the Chautauqua Lecture Series on June 24, followed by author Amy Tan (Aug. 6), New York Times columnist David French (June 28), musician Wynton Marsalis (Aug. 19) and numerous others.

* “The Light and The Dark” by Kate Hamill, a play commissioned by the institution for its 150th anniversary, premieres this summer alongside a trio of chamber operas, performed outside, celebrating some uniquely Chautauqua moments, including the 1929 visit by Amelia Earhart

“There’s no better way to celebrate a birthday than by showcasing a new work,” said Moore.

Speaking of birthday celebrations: On Aug. 6, the community will gather for a communitywide party – Old First Night – with drone fireworks, entertainment by Squonk and a giant birthday cake on the porch of the historic Athenaeum Hotel.

The first Tuesday of August is referred to as Old First Night in honor of the original group of Sunday school teachers who gathered on the grounds in early August 1874.

A movement is born

Co-founders Lewis Miller, an inventor in Akron, and John Heyl Vincent, a Methodist bishop, hoped that a few hundred participants would show up for that first session. Instead, about 20,000 attended over the two-week period.

“It was a huge success,” said Jon Schmitz, historian and archivist at the Chautauqua Institution. “They realized they should do it again.”

That first summer, most visitors stayed in tents. Eventually, those tents gave way to what are now known as “cottages,” many of which are elaborate, multistory homes with ornate porches, balconies and gables.

Among the notable residences: Miller Cottage, one of the country’s first prefab houses, built in 1875 for the visit of President Ulysses S. Grant, the first of several presidents to speak here.

“Miller didn’t think President Grant should stay in a tent,” said Beresford, on a recent tour of the grounds.

Though Miller and Vincent were Methodists, the religious programming was multidenominational, a tradition which continues today.

Schmitz said the daily routine in those early days isn’t all that different from today. Attendees started the day with a prayer service, followed by a morning lecture, recreation, more classes, dinner and evening entertainment.

“It was a very structured day,” he said. “You didn’t have to take classes, but you had to do something.”

Many of those same elements are offered on the Chautauqua campus today, though Schmitz noted: “You no longer have to go to bed at 10. And if you want to, you’re free to walk around doing nothing at all.”

To reach more people, Vincent founded the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle in 1878, which started as a correspondence course for folks who couldn’t afford college, but evolved into a nationwide book club.

The popularity of the book circles sparked a movement that spread across the United States, which once had as many as 250 Chautauqua communities, as well as traveling Chautauqua programs that moved from place to place.

The idea, said Schmitz, was to encourage a more productive and wholesome use of leisure time, in contrast to the drinking, dancing and card playing that were prevalent elsewhere.

But the heady days of the Chautauqua movement didn’t last.

Most Chautauqua communities closed in the 1920s (although the two largest, the Chautauqua Institution in New York and Lakeside Chautauqua in Ohio, are going strong).

The Chautauqua Institution nearly went bankrupt in the 1930s, and is now supported by a charitable foundation to guard against future downturns.

There have been numerous challenges since then – including, most recently, the 2008 recession and the COVID pandemic.

Then, in August 2022, noted author Salman Rushdie was stabbed on the stage of the institution’s 4,600-seat amphitheater in advance of a talk about violence against writers.

Increased security

The violent Rushdie incident was a wake-up call for the institution, which had always prided itself on its peaceful approach to problem-solving.

Rushdie writes about the incident in his new book, “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder,” released in April. Meanwhile, the 26-year-old man accused in the attack, apprehended during the event, remains in Chautauqua County jail awaiting trail.

Moore said the incident reinforces the resilience of the Chautauqua community, which continued the next day with scheduled performances by the Washington Ballet and others.

“They wanted to perform,” Moore said. “The arts brings people together – they don’t divide people.”

Schmitz, the historian, noted the existence of more security on the campus, and clear bags are now required for entrance to the amphitheater. But not much else has changed, he said.

He said people sometimes ask him if the Chautauqua ideal is still relevant. His answer: “It’s more relevant today than it probably ever has been.”

He called it “spontaneous community through shared experience.

“This isn’t Disney World. It’s a real place,” he said. “Chautauquans need not agree. But they need to be together. What’s important is how big the tent is.”

The community, by the way, will be erecting a replica of that first tent that went up in August 1874, approximately 16 feet long by 12 feet wide. It will be on display in Miller Park, the site of the first assembly, for the first two weeks of the season, when it will be moved to the Butterfly Garden.

Where: The Chautauqua Institution is about 130 miles east of Cleveland, in far western New York. The grounds encompass about 750 acres on the western shore of Chautauqua Lake and include two golf courses. The central campus includes about 1 ½ miles of lakefront property.

Where to stay: The historic Athenaeum Hotel , built in 1881, is a frequent first-timer’s choice, with 150 rooms and a terrific front porch overlooking scenic Chautauqua Lake. Rates start at about $200 during the summer. There are numerous other on-grounds options, as well, including bed and breakfasts and small inns, plus houses and apartments for rent.

Admission: The institution offers several options for admission, including tickets for individual performances (which vary greatly by show). A Traditional Gate Pass, which provides access to all shows and activities, runs $105 per day ($65 ages 13-25, free 12 and under). Parking is $12-$15 per day.

Getting around: Most personal vehicles are banned from the grounds, relegated to nearby parking lots. Trams and buses provide transportation throughout the campus, although two wheels and two feet are favored modes of getting around.

A Girls’ Trip to Costa Rica. But With No Phones, Did It Happen?

Travelers are signing up for phone-free tours, to try to escape technology’s tether on daily life. But would it make for a better experience?

We were on a quintessential girl’s trip to Costa Rica. Together, we gulped icy drinks by the hotel pool, were battered by waves during a surf lesson, had our tarot cards read aboard a catamaran, and danced our hearts out, powered by espresso martinis, to early 2000s anthems on a rooftop.

But we didn’t capture any of this on our phones. No Instagram stories were posted of the fun being had. No TikToks either. We didn’t text photos to friends and family in far colder climates back home.

And if there wasn’t a picture, well, did it happen? I had wondered if a vacation without my phone would reprogram my iPhone-addled brain, whether it might deepen the connections I made or improve my travel experiences. So, in mid-April, I joined a group of 10 other women in their 20s and 30s for a four-day, phone-free tour of Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Province, on the country’s northwestern coast, a picturesque place of breathtaking beaches, tropical forests and, everywhere around you, the chance of a surreal wildlife sighting.

To document my vacation, I brought only a pen, a notebook and a disposable camera.

‘More present in the moment’

FTLO Travel , which started offering group tours in 2016 for solo travelers 25 to 39 years old, organized our phone-free trip. Most FTLO clients are women, said Tara Cappel, the company’s founder and chief executive, and the majority of them are traveling solo for the first time.

The company has long had a rule prohibiting phones at dinner, she said, and the phone-free trips, which began this year, are an extension of this. “Removing that sort of temptation has always helped facilitate better bonding and conversation,” said Ms. Cappel, 35.

The hope in providing an entirely phone-free experience, she continued, is that travelers could “be present in the experience and the destination and with each other.”

She added that FTLO’s phone-free trips this year, which start at $1,699 and also head to Iceland, Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico, are in strong demand . My Costa Rica trip was sold out and overall, the company anticipates about 3,000 travelers across the hundreds of trips they’re offering this year.

The interest in these trips stem in part from a growing trend among travelers to try to escape technology’s tether on daily life. Operators are moving beyond offering meditation retreats and truly remote locations — even cruises and hotels in buzzy vacation hot spots these days market their disconnection experiences. At the Grand Velas Resorts , on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, guests can opt for a detox concierge, who will remove the hotel room’s flat screen television and lock all personal electronics in a safe. With Unplugged , a company specializing in tech-free escapes, you can book a “digital detox cabin” to spend three tech-free days in the English countryside.

Heather Orton, a nurse practitioner and my roommate in Costa Rica, said that going phone-free was the main reason she’d booked the FTLO trip. She’d previously gone on two trips with FTLO, to Crete and to Morocco, experiences where she made lasting friendships.

“At work I have to always have my phone on, be responsive to texts, emails and calls,” said Ms. Orton, 37, of Ohio. “It’s nice to turn that off and get away.” She said she felt she was “more present in the moment” and fully immersed in Costa Rica.

A bit like sleepaway camp

We’d come from all over the United States, including Texas, Alabama, California and Minnesota, and most of us were meeting for the very first time.

It felt like sleepaway camp, or college orientation — it was a social situation structured around group activities that quickly gave rise to new friendships, even if they were brittle ones. Two ebullient trip leaders corralled us to various activities and recited facts about local flora and fauna, all adding to the feeling of a camp for adults, and at times like being chaperoned on a school trip.

They directed us to their favorite restaurants and watering holes, and attempted to draw everyone into conversation and ensure no one felt left out. One afternoon, Mandy, one of the co-leaders and a certified yoga instructor, led a trio of us in a restorative flow at our hotel. Dani, the other trip leader, who was born in Costa Rica, was on crutches because of a recent ankle injury, but he hobbled along energetically on nights out, swaying to dance music on one leg.

Companies targeting younger travelers, like FTLO, G Adventures , Flashpack and others, aren’t touting their ability to get you to a place, but the connection they can deliver.

“The inspiration was really to help people go abroad who had the desire but didn’t necessarily have people to go with,” Ms. Cappel said of creating FTLO.

Sambavi Venkatesen, a 32-year-old therapist who lives in Austin, Texas, told me she had booked the trip after turning to TikTok to research group travel for people of color.

“The opportunity to meet other diverse women is not something that’s easily accessible in your 30s. That was kind of a big appeal,” she said, adding that she felt a real connection to other tour participants by trip's end. “I genuinely want to see people again and hope they visit me.”

Unscheduled time

We were based in Tamarindo, a lively tourist playground set along the Pacific Ocean that spanned just a few blocks, making it easy to navigate without GPS. We were given a printed map of the town, which I barely used. With my phone and laptop locked in the hotel room safe, gone were all the tools I usually rely on while traveling (and check frenetically): map and translation apps, social media and internet, for restaurant and activity searches. But thanks to the tour, this work had already been done.

We spent an afternoon ziplining through canyons and then crossed a rickety suspension bridge to plunge into the icy, refreshing waters by a waterfall. We surfed and drank beer — two activities I do not generally voluntarily sign up for. We lounged on the netted deck of a catamaran, where we watched a deep-red sun sink into the sea. Nearly every night we frequented a different nightclub.

We started the trip knowing nothing about each other’s lives, from our ages to interests. Our first night was characterized by icebreakers (“share a fun fact about yourself”) and the occasional awkward silence. But by the third night, we were screaming the lyrics to Lil Jon’s “Get Low” in the club. And the conversation grew more nuanced, as we shared stories about jobs, relationships, beloved pets and the rhythms of lives back home.

Some of the best moments happened during the time left unscheduled, when I made my own decisions about activities. A highlight of the trip was an excursion my roommate and I booked on our own, through the hotel, to kayak in a mangrove-bordered estuary, where we spotted iguanas, howler monkeys and a crocodile, watchful and still in the murky waters.

Overall, I didn’t miss my phone. The absence of Slack notifications and countless other digital intrusions was bliss. Conversations unspooled more fluidly than I expected they would without the crutch of a phone for idly filling silence. I slept deeper than I had in months. But my phone’s phantom presence loomed large. I swiveled my head, a Pavlovian response, when I heard the ping of another tourist's phone. My bag felt too light, which made me feel uneasy.

Mainly, I missed a good camera. Others had wisely brought digital cameras along, but I had to ration the pictures on my disposable camera, and only allowed myself to take one food photo. It’s fuzzy.

Not everyone on the trip was fully committed to the screen time ban. One night, as I tried to capture sunset using my disposable, one of my trip mates pulled out her phone and took a picture. I’m sure her photo is better than mine.

Toward the end of the trip, I learned that some other travelers had surreptitiously used their phones throughout (to text and call their moms, mostly).

But we delighted in seeing a drowsy tapir, a large mammal almost mythical because of its rarity, wake from an afternoon nap in Hacienda Guachipelin , a private property by Rincon de la Vieja National Park . There were also dozens of howler monkeys perched atop mangroves swaying in the wind, and one night, a man who was absolutely shredding on the guitar at a beachfront bar. All were incredible moments that I’ve already revisited in my memory.

On the last day of the trip, we switched our phones back on, literally jolting us back to real life with pings and vibrations. We shared Instagram handles to connect online, and I returned, almost without realizing it, to a stream of information, push notifications, digital itineraries, unfettered scrolling and the expectation of a quick reply to a message.

I’ve tried, however, to maintain the feeling of being phone-free in Tamarindo: the delicious lack of immediacy, the way time seemed to expand languidly.

Simply put, I’m using my phone less.

Messi joins Argentina for Copa América: His stats show he's ready for another title run

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Lionel Messi did not have to travel far Monday to report to Argentina’s Copa América training.

Argentina, the reigning 2021 Copa América and 2022 World Cup champions, are holding their Copa América training sessions in South Florida at Inter Miami, the MLS club which Messi calls home.

Messi, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner who turns 37 on June 24, will captain Argentina again for Copa América. He’ll play in two friendlies − June 9 in Chicago and June 14 in the Washington D.C. area − before the tournament begins on June 20 when they face Canada at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

And Messi appears fit and in shape, according to Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni.

"I think the good thing is that he has had continuity, that after the injury he has played and that is important," Scaloni told reporters on Sunday night. "We can see that he is fit and well."

Messi reported to the team hotel on Monday, after spending Sunday hanging out with fellow Inter Miami star Luis Suarez and their families, playing some indoor soccer and paddleball, while his Argentine teammates and coaches arrived in South Florida.

Argentina’s training at Inter Miami this time around feels like a full-circle moment. They first used the club’s facilities in September 2022 before their World Cup run − which proved to be a key selling point before Messi joined the club last year.

Messi is in the twilight of his storied career. The World Cup win cemented Messi’s place as one of the best − if not, the best − in the sport’s history. Messi also repeatedly said his 2022 World Cup run would be his last.

This likely will be Messi’s last Copa América, given the next one is in 2028. It could also be Messi’s last major tournament he’ll play for Argentina.

Messi will likely continue helping Argentina qualify for the 2026 World Cup later this year, but he’ll be turning 39 when that tournament begins − if he wants to play.

Messi’s stats with Inter Miami since July

Does Messi have another dominant tournament run in him? His play with Inter Miami shows he does.

Messi has shown he’s still in his prime with Inter Miami − when he’s been fit and not dealing with the lingering effects of a groin pull like he was last September to October, or a hamstring strain like he had from mid-March until April began.

Messi has played in 29 of 43 possible matches with Inter Miami since last July − missing 14 games due to rest or injury, including seven this season. Inter Miami has been unbeatable in 25 of 29 matches Messi has played, with 20 wins, five draws and four losses.

Messi isn’t playing with Kylian Mbappé or Neymar anymore, so he’s had to score more: Messi has 25 goals with 16 assists, including five assists in a match on May 4 . He scored a goal in 19 of the 29 games, and assisted in 10 of his 29 games.

Messi had a goal or assist in 23 of the 29 games he’s played. Messi had a goal and an assist in six games, including a four-game stretch from April 13-May 4 − where he scored six goals with eight assists.

It was Messi’s best stretch with Inter Miami since his first best stretch, when he had 10 goals and an assist en route to the Leagues Cup title in the first seven games of his tenure.

Messi re-joins Argentina after scoring a goal in his last two matches last week. He finished play with Inter Miami in a 3-3 draw against St. Louis last Saturday. And Inter Miami’s 3-1 loss to Atlanta United  last Wednesday was the first match where he scored a goal but his team lost since the 2-1 loss Argentina suffered to Saudi Arabia to begin the Qatar World Cup on Nov. 22, 2022.

How dominant has Messi, Argentina been?

Speaking of Argentina losses, there haven’t been many in recent years.

Argentina lost 2-0 to Uruguay last November during World Cup qualifying − their first loss since the Saudi Arabia defeat.

Before that, Messi’s last Argentina defeat was at the 2019 Copa América semifinal against Brazil.

In other words, Messi and Argentina have been dominant − losing just three times in their last 46 matches together.

This Copa América run, which could last seven matches if Argentina reaches the final, is another chance for Messi and the world champions this summer to defend their crown and exert their recent dominance.

Cowboys announce when team will fly to Oxnard for training camp

The Dallas Cowboys are currently holding minicamp at The Star in Frisco, Texas, but the start of training camp in Oxnard, California is just around the corner.

Training camps across the league will begin in mid-to-late-July, but exact dates have yet to be announced.

We do know, however, when the team will head out west.

NFL Network's Jane Slater reports that the Cowboys will fly to Oxnard on Tuesday, July 23. The tentative plan is to hold the first training camp practice on Thursday, July 25.

Dallas opens its preseason just over two weeks later against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Sunday, August 11.

They will then make the short trip to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to take on the Raiders, before returning home to host the Los Angeles Chargers and presumably finish out training camp at The Star.

Of course, everyone will be watching whether the team can agree to a contract extension with star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, quarterback Dak Prescott, or both. Everyone will have their fingers crossed.
