Yellowstone National Park by Electric Bike, The Complete Guide

Last Updated on March 26, 2023 by Igor Karni

Easy E-Biking - National Parks, USA by electric bike - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

Yellowstone National Park  is located in the western United States, primarily within northwest Wyoming, with parts of the park also located in Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone was the first national park in the U.S., and is renowned for its wildlife, natural landscapes, and geothermal features, particularly the Old Faithful geyser.

If you are thinking of exploring Yellowstone National Park by electric bike, this article will address all your questions before you embark on your trip!

Are e-bikes allowed in Yellowstone National Park?

Yes, electric bikes are allowed in Yellowstone National Park! As of 2019, e-bikes are allowed to ride everywhere that traditional bicycles are permitted within the park.

According to the National Park Service (NPS) regulations for e-bikes, the operator of an e-bike may only use the motor to assist pedal propulsion, and the motor may not be used to propel the vehicle without the rider also pedaling. E-bikes with a throttle are considered motorbikes, and therefore would have to abide by motor vehicle rules. Cyclists must also obey the speed limits and the state’s traffic laws.

On a federal level, the U.S.A. defines a “ low-speed electric bicycle” as a two or three-wheeled vehicle that has fully operable pedal, and the state of Wyoming additionally requires an e-bike to have:

  • A maximum motor output of 750W
  • A maximum speed that must not exceed 20 mph (32 km/h) for Class I and Class II, or 28 mph (45 km/h) for Class III e-bikes

To learn more about the United States’ electric bicycle laws, view the full list of rules here .

How is Yellowstone National Park organized, is bicycle-friendly?

Yellowstone National Park is well organized for cycling. E-bike riders are allowed to cycle on established public roads, parking areas, and designated routes within the park. However, cyclists should keep in mind that both e-bikes and traditional bikes are not allowed to ride in designated wilderness areas or on over-snow roads during wintertime.

The NPS also states that riders should practice extreme caution when utilizing park roads for cycling since vehicle traffic is heavy and there are no bicycle paths on roadways. The park also has winding and narrow roads, which offer poor visibility.

Easy E-Biking - National Parks, USA by electric bike - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

When it comes to bike paths within the park, the Mammoth Hot Springs area includes the Bunsen Peak Loop Bike Trail , The Old Gardiner Road Bike Trail , and the Abandoned Railroad Bed Bike Trail .

In the West Yellowstone Area , cyclists can use the Riverside Bike Trail. The Old Faithful Area has the Fountain Freight Road Bike Trail, the Lone Star Geyser Bike Trail , and the Old Faithful Lower General Store to Morning Glory Pool Bike Trail .

The Lake Village Area includes the Natural Bridge Bike Trail and Old Lake Road Bike Trail . The Canyon and Tower areas include the Mount Washburn Bike Trail .

Where to stay during the trip?

There are many options to choose from when staying for an overnight visit at Yellowstone National Park!

For hotel, lodging, and cabin options within and around the park, some top-rated spots include Lake Yellowstone Hotel & Cabins, Old Faithful Inn, Lake Lodge, Old Faithful Lodge Cabins, Canyon Lodge & Cabins, Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel & Cabins , and Roosevelt Lodge & Cabins . Visit Booking.com ( West Gate , North Gate , East Gate ) or Hotels.com to view more options!

If you are interested in camping while visiting Yellowstone National Park, campsites include Madison Campground, Grant Village Campground, Canyon Campground, Bridge Bay Campground , and Fishing Bridge RV Park . For more information about camping, visit Yellowstone National Park Lodges !

Where can I eat? Or should I take my food with me?

There are several places for visitors to eat at while in Yellowstone National Park!

For quick bites and easy on-the-go options, visit Old Faithful Inn Bear Paw Deli, Mammoth General Store, Old Faithful Basin Store, Lake Hotel Deli, and Grant Village Cafeteria.

If you’re looking for sit-down restaurants or finer dining options, top spots include the Roosevelt Lodge Dining Room, Lake Yellowstone Hotel Dining Room, Mammoth Hotel Dining Room, Bear Pit Lounge, Obsidian Dining Room, Canyon Fountain and Grill, Wylie’s Canteen at Lake Lodge, Grant Village Dining Room, and Mammoth Terrace Grill.

What gear should I take on the trip?

It’s important to bring your proper bike and safety gear with you on your e-bike trip .

Be sure to bring: a helmet, backpack, route maps, closed-toe footwear, water, e-bike charger, reflective bike-appropriate clothing and layers, bear spray, sunscreen, sunglasses, a bike repair kit and pump, a first aid kit, and front and rear lights. The NPS also suggests that cyclists should check with the park staff ahead of time to know when to avoid high volumes of traffic and trail users.

Additionally, if you will be camping, you should additionally bring your tent, sleeping bag, extra clothes, food, booking information, dishware, cutlery, and a valid ID.

Where can I charge my e-bike?

While there are currently no official lists of electric bike-specific charging stations in Yellowstone National Park, e-cyclists may be able to charge their e-bike at hotels, lodges, campgrounds, restaurants, and cafes. (However, be sure to ask for permission first!)

Easy E-Biking - mountain e-bike Bosch battery, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

There is also a selection of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations available within the park; riders may be able to use these stations to charge their e-bike.

EV charging stations within the park are located at Mammoth Hot Springs in front of the Haynes Photo Shop, as well as behind the Northwest corner of the Mammoth Hotel; Old Faithful at the Old Faithful Lodge Cabins outside Showerhouse 1; Canyon Village in front of Rhyolite and Washburn lodges; Lake Village in front of Teal employee dorm, and; West Entrance/West Yellowstone MT at The Gray Wolf Inn and Suites and the Holiday Inn.

For further details, visit National Park Service’s “EV Charging” webpage for Yellowstone National Park here .

What kind of e-bike do I need to ride in Yellowstone National Park?

Since the cycling paths within Yellowstone National Most trails are primarily designated as mountain biking trails, we recommend using either an electric mountain bike (eMTB) or a hybrid e-bike to safely tackle the park’s landscape.

Read also: How to select your first electric mountain bike ? And, How much does a good eMTB e-bike cost ?

Where can I rent an e-bike in Yellowstone National Park, or should I take one with me?

Yes, there are a few options for e-bike rentals in Yellowstone National Park! We will feature these companies later in the article. You may also bring your e-bike with you, but don’t forget to first check that your e-bike abides by the federal and state e-biking specifications!

What else can I do while on an e-bike trip in Yellowstone National Park?

Renowned for its geothermal features, visitors should be sure to check out Old Faithful, Norris Geyser Basin, Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone Caldera, Mammoth Hot Springs, Dragon’s Mouth Spring, Geyser Hill , and Artist’s Point .

Visitors can also partake in other activities outside of cycling such as rafting, paddling, fishing, and hiking!

What is the best time of year to visit Yellowstone National Park on an e-bike?

The best time of year to visit Yellowstone National Park is between late April to May, July and August, and September through early October. While summer months tend to be the busiest and experience the warmest weather, spring and fall time generally see fewer crowds and fewer road closures.

Easy E-Biking - National Parks, USA by electric bike - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

Visitors should also bear in mind that, due to varying elevations throughout the park, temperatures can get quite cold in higher elevation areas, even during the summer months.

Average temperatures in July and August range anywhere from 42 – 72 degrees Fahrenheit (5 – 22 degrees Celsius), 18 – 52 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 – 11 degrees Celsius) in April and May, and 24 – 62 degrees Fahrenheit (-4 – 16 degrees Celsius) in September and October.

Winter months can get as cold as 1 degree Fahrenheit (-17 degrees Celsius) and can get quite snowy, so we recommend cyclists avoid visiting the park during wintertime.

Not what we expected on the Bike and Soak Tour. This tour does not go into the park. You ride along a fire service road with a washboard surface for a lot of the ride on a very heavy eBike with a back break that is very difficult to squeeze. Our guide was full of inaccurate information about the wildlife. If not for my husband, she'd have passed up the herd of elk. The tour ended at a hot springs with a lot of orange algae on the surface of the pool and black mold around the edges. Regardless of our massive disappointment, we made the best of it being in beautiful Montana. Lunch was a pleasant surprise, very tasty. Just not what we expected based on their website and definitely not worth $200.

Could have asked for a better experience biking with Jay and Suzanne. Jay led an incredibly fun and informative tour and ride through Gardiner and along a beautiful trail by Yellowstone. The tour was both fun and challenging but Jay & co made it one of our favorite things we did while in Montana! You can tell he is passionate about sharing this beautiful place -- we are so grateful to have met him and had this experience. Will definitely do again next time we're in Montana!

Would recommend this e-bike tour if you're looking for a new, active way to explore the Yellowstone area. We did the Bike and Soak tour with Jay and had a great time. Jay was a great guide, was patient with the riders who were a bit anxious, took time to explain the e bike features and paced the trip well so that everyone of all levels could enjoy. I would not recommend this for someone who is not comfortable on bikes as it takes some technical skill to navigate around the potholes, small hills and muddy patches (we rode two days after a rainstorm). We got splashed with a bit of mud too. The scenery and wildlife were highlights. We would consider returning another time! Thank you to Jay for making it a great experience!

My wife, my two daughters (8&11) and I did this tour yesterday. I cannot say enough good things about this tour and Jay. First, the best stat I heard. 95% of tourists never leave the roads. An e-bike tour enables you to see Yellowstone in a far better way. Jay was the most amazing tour guide. Professional, incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and one heck of a story teller. I can say that my family and I have a lifelong memory and Jay is to thank for making it so special.

Overall a good experience. Received some inaccurate information about the bike trails prior to arrival (on the phone) but still had a good time.

Our group of 21 had an awesome time. Jay, Roman and Jennifer were great guides. The views are beautiful and bike ride was really fun! I've developed a new found appreciation of ebikes. We saw antelope, bison and wild horses.

Unless you are an experienced mountain biker, reconsider these tours. Steep hills, rocks on non-path, narrow with sheer drop offs on one side. Guides rode ahead and didn't know that someone had fallen. On our ride one adult and two kids fell and guide barreled into one. Hard to enjoy scenery when you have all you can do to steer to avoid obstacles or have your brains rattled by washerboards. In advance calls to book, company really downplayed difficulty even though they were told some riders were inexperienced. What we were told and what we got did not match up at all. Buyer beware!

Photo of John J.

The bikes from here are reliable and fun. The folks who run this place are even better. We rented bikes today and they pointed out all of the best places to go and even told us where we could go to watch bears tonight!

Photo of Phil H.

We had an awesome adventure with this well-run family business. We had a large group of riders with varying biking abilities and ages. Our guides, Jason and Georgia, were patient and accommodating to all of our needs. We did the Bike and Soak tour which started with a long scenic dirt road ride. We saw a herd of elk and a few pronghorns. The terrain included smooth dirt, bumpy washboard, and loose small stones. The fat tire Rad ebikes handled everything easily. Lunch was delicious. The sandwiches were from a local deli (I forget the name). The vegetarian sandwich was excellent which was a pleasant surprise since it had been a while since our last good veggie meal. Lastly, we spent close to two hours soaking at the Yellowstone Hot Springs. This wonderful facility has three temperature pools: freezing cold, pleasantly warm, and sizzling hot. Spending time in all three is guaranteed to reinvigorate. An active adventure with Big Sky Ebikes is a wonderful way to explore the beauty of Northern Yellowstone.

Photo of Feliks R.

First e-bike experience. Big Sky Ebikes (and Jay) was awesome! He set us up, told us how to operate the bikes and even gave us recommendations for where to go for the day. It was so much fun and even my 11 y.o. loved it. If you are not sure if you should do it- you definitely should!

Yellowstone National Park Ride

A Yellowstone National Park bike tour is a otherworldly experience especially if you happen to enjoy wildlife, geysers and fabulous landscapes! This tour spends three days in the National Park and then 4 days in the lesser known, but equally compelling Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. We consider Day 7’s Bear Tooth Pass to be one of our top climbs.

  • River Canyon
  • Yellowstone NP
  • Old Faithful and Upper Geyser Basin
  • Yellowstone Lake
  • The old west town Cody
  • Chief Joseph Scenic Byway
  • Bear Tooth Highway

Starting from $ 3,575.00

*Please note the prices are subject to change depending availability *

Day 0: Arrival in Bozeman

Riders either drive or fly to Bozeman, Montana. If flying, the airport is Yellowstone International Airport (BZN)

Day 1: West Yellowstone to Canyon Village

After a morning shuttle from Belgrade to West Yellowstone, MT through the picturesque Gallatin River Canyon (‘A River Runs Through It’ was filmed here!), we start our ride from the West Entrance of Yellowstone National Park and begin our journey into the park, but keep a look out for the commonly sighted bison and elk, often right in the middle of the road! Also keep a keen eye for the more elusive grizzly bear, or perhaps even some wolves! This is wild and rugged terrain where wildlife abounds amid the beauty of Mother Nature and her geothermal wonders. We also urge you to stop at the many pullouts to take in the wonders of this magnificent place. Ride: 44 Miles with up to 2,910 feet of climbing.

Day 2: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Starting from Grant Village, today’s route will ride along the western shores of Yellowstone Lake, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in North America which is also centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest ancient super-volcano on the North American continent. Our destination today is the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone – an amazing 900 foot deep canyon carved into the ancient rock by the Yellowstone River that offers picturesque views of waterfalls and deeply eroded golden red rock formations. While Yellowstone National Park is best known for it’s geysers and thermal water features, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a hidden gem that must be visited to be appreciated. It’s simply gorgeous! 78 miles with up to 3,775 feet of climbing, Shorter ride options are available

Day 3: Yellowstone National Park to Cody

Today offers an epic day on the bike! After a hearty breakfast for the long day ahead, riders depart from Grant Village, pedal along the shores of Yellowstone Lake, and then exit Yellowstone National Park via the East Entrance. After some moderate climbing for the first third of the route, riders will enjoy losing 4,500 feet along a 60 mile descent as we make our way along the North Fork of the Shoshone River, through the scenic Wapiti Valley, along The Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway, around Buffalo Bill Reservoir to eventually make our way into the rustic western cowboy town of Cody, Wyoming. Wow! What a day! Note: Lower mileage options exist for this ride by simply taking a bump for portions of the morning riding. However, look at all that downhill on the 2nd half of the profile below – you definitely want to ride that! 101 miles with up to 3,235 feet of climbing, Shorter ride options are available

Day 4: Layover Day in Cody

Today is a layover day in Cody, Wyoming. There will be an optional “South Fork Out and Back” ride offered today for those that want to keep up their daily pedaling. Other activities can include exploring the old western downtown area, attending a real western rodeo, exploring the Buffalo Bill museum of the west, hiking on nearby trails, or simply relaxing.

Day 5: Chief Joseph Scenic Byway

Today offer possibly the most scenic riding of the entire week as we cruise along the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway and dip into Montana at the end of the ride. The standard plan is to start with a quick shuttle (to avoid less scenic riding) and drop cyclists at the base of the climb of Chief Joseph Pass. NOTE: Chief Joseph pass was newly paved in the summer of 2017! The tarmac is smooth and fast For the E.F.I. rider today is certainly the “queen stage” of the week with over 8,000′ of climbing and a HC (beyond category) 10 mile climb to Chief Joseph pass. Of course there will be plenty of opportunities to “bump” ahead for those not wanting to put in all the miles or climbs allowing those riders to literally cherry pick the best of the best along today’s route. We will conclude the ride at Cooke City, Montana and check into the Soda Butte Lodge for the final night of our week-long adventure. It’s hard to believe that the week is almost over as we share one last dinner together in this truly wondrous place. Standard: 47-miles with 3,000-feet of climbing Extra Option: 77 miles with up to 7,300 feet of climbing

Day 6: Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge, MT

It would not be a classic tour without a classic ending… and today is the day! With an early morning start, we’ll take on the mighty Beartooth Highway and head northeast up to Beartooth Pass maxing out at nearly 11,000′ elevation. The climb is long and gradual and the views are amazing! As we past tree line on our ascent, we’ll ride past dozens of fresh water lakes sprinkled throughout the barren landscape where there is often snow pack at these altitudes year round. We consider Beartooth Pass a top three climb of all the climbs in all the itineraries we offer! When one reaches the top of Beartooth Pass they just don’t go down, they get to go across an alpine landscapes for miles before descending. Up high above the trees the views and wildflowers are tremendous. At the top of Beartooth Pass we’ll stop for lunch with 100+ mile views in all directions – it is truly spectacular! Post lunch will be a mind boggling 27 mile twisty descent to the town of Red Lodge, Montana… this is one ride you are certainly not going to forget. Upon arrival in Red Lodge, we end at Red Lodge Ales to toss back a few celebratory brews and then pack up to shuttle back to Bozeman to end the tour. What an incredible week! Standard: 44 miles with 4,200-feet of climbing Extra Option: 64-miles with up to 5,400 feet of climbing

Information

How is the traffic in yellowstone.

In Yellowstone there are roads that are more conducive for cyclists (shoulders and good pavement) and we seek these out. Overall, three of the our Yellowstone’s tour’s seven days are within the national park and on two of these days we offer the option of world class hikes that we ride our bikes to! On the four days of riding outside the park, you will find traffic to be very light.

Within the park, when we run our tours in late August, vehicular traffic is less than high season (July and early August) due to the fact that most kids and their families have returned to school. Overall, the nature of the traffic within Yellowstone park is generally “tourist” in nature; meaning they are driving at slower speeds and stopping at pull-offs. In general, there is not cell phone reception within the park and this means drivers are not distracted by the impulse to text or make calls. Also since traffic is less in the morning hours, we take advantage of this window to start our rides.

Overall, as a result of the design of our tour, our cyclists have found the riding experience within Yellowstone National Park to be safe and fulfilling.

E-bike tour guide pedals Yellowstone, Gardiner rides

BILLINGS – In the winter, Jay O’Connor used to feed 55 horses that in the summer provided horseback rides for fishing or hunting guests.

Now O’Connor owns 40 e-bikes that he parks in the garage for the winter and ignores.

As the owner of Big Sky Ebike Tours and Rentals in Gardiner since 2020, O’Connor said he’s “living the dream” guiding cycling tours in and around Yellowstone National Park. After all, where else can cyclists possibly see bison, elk, bighorn sheep, bears, foxes, coyotes, deer and a variety of hot pools, fumaroles and geysers in one trip, not to mention spectacular views of the surrounding mountains?

O’Connor’s guided rides inside Yellowstone include a 17-mile trip around the base of Bunsen Peak on a gravel service road closed to public vehicles. From Old Faithful, his Geyser Basin Tour pedals to Morning Glory Pool along the Firehole River and then on to Biscuit Basin. Shuttling the bikes he can then skip on to Firehole Lake Drive and ride Fountain Freight Road to Grand Prismatic Spring.

“I don’t do anything on the roads at all,” he said, instead focusing on getting his guests away from crowds.

Last weekend, with the 50 miles of highway from Mammoth Hot Springs to West Yellowstone open to bicycle traffic only, O’Connor was leading tours from Mammoth to Norris Geyser Basin, a 38-mile round trip.

Outside the park, one of his most popular tours travels down the Old Yellowstone Trail to the red-colored rock uplift of Devils Slide and on to Yankee Jim Canyon where the Yellowstone River is forced into a narrow gorge. The return ride stops at Yellowstone Hot Springs for a soothing soak.

“That’s a really popular ride for us because there is so much wildlife in the basin,” O’Connor said.

Costs range from $175 for the Bunsen Peak ride to $275 for the Geyser Basin tour. Four people is the minimum for a tour, otherwise an additional fee is tacked on. Bike rentals are $50 an hour to $100 for a full day.

Up and down

Much like the trails and roads he rides, O’Connor’s business has seen some ups and downs since it was launched.

Opening during the COVID pandemic was a “kick in the teeth,” but then participation in outdoor activities grew because indoor venues were closed. That inaugural year was followed by a solid summer of growth before the historic 2022 flood. The raging waters of the Gardner and Yellowstone rivers washed out the nearby North Entrance road to Yellowstone. Gardiner businesses were suddenly isolated at a dead end. Last year, tours rebounded after the route was reopened, and so far this year O’Connor is quickly filling his summer tours.

“My primary demographic is families and people over the age of 40,” he said.

Feeling young again

E-bikes are also a personal choice for O’Connor. He had a hip replacement last year and was still able to pedal 20 miles a day with the motorized assistance the cycles provide. His first ride on an e-bike made him feel like he was 20 again, propelling him to start the tour and rental service.

“This business wouldn’t work with a traditional bike,” he said.

That’s because when touring, he uses a microphone that connects to earbuds each rider wears. This way he can tell his tour group what power level of assistance he’s at and what gear the cycle is in, so everyone stays at relatively the same pace.

On traditional bicycles, the group would likely be more spread out depending on the rider’s ability, or lack thereof.

Most of O’Connor’s tours are under 25 miles, so the bikes’ batteries last for the entire ride. On longer trips, like in the spring when he goes from Mammoth to Norris and back, he carries an extra battery.

On one of those spring rides into the park, O’Connor came around a corner to find a newly awakened black bear only 10 feet off the road.

“He was groggy,” he said. “He must have just crawled out of hibernation.”

Rather than fleeing from the pack of riders, the bear ambled over to a boulder and curled up for a nap. That’s not something most bike riders will encounter, providing a charge unlike the one e-bikers may typically need.

Summer is nearly here and the Northwest has sprung to life as the days have grown longer and warmer.
