Sustainable tourism in Albania: Piloting International Standards with Specialized Tour Operators

With global events with regard to climate change, it is about time that also in Albania, the tourism actors make concrete steps toward international recognizing on sustainable tourism standards. With RisiAlbania’s support three Albanian tour operators, focused in responsible and sustainable tourism, will get certified by TravelLife , an international certification body, accredit by GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council).

After an open call  and a selection process organized in May 2022, Risi signed the cooperation agreement with three tour operators, Zbulo , Ecotour Albania and Caravan Horse Riding Albania , which will be the “pioneers” of the change toward sustainable tourism.

This will be the first piloting project, and our implementing partners remain optimistic that this development will have a positive impact in their business growht, but also among their local rural partners and communities involved in their tour packages. Risi encourages other Albanian actors to follow after this piloting.

At this regard Risi is focused in organizing several awareness raising activities. With RisiAlbania’s support, a five days visit GSTC experts with Albanian actors was organized in June 2022. During the visit Albanian actors had the possibility to further explore more information on the sustainable tourism standards and certifications. Other meetings were organized with Ministry of Tourism and Environment (MOTE), Albanian Tour Operators Association (ATOA), specialized tour operators, University of Tirana and Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

Expertise & Proven Success in Tourism

We’re tourism professionals from the private sector who don’t rely on project funds but strive to create useful outcomes in our projects.

We're the founders of a registered & licensed tour operator with annual double digit growth. In 2019 we hosted >2.000 foreign guests and generated EUR 1 Million turnover. 88% of that is paid out to the partner network of largely rural, family-run businesses.

Outcome Driven

Only 5% of our revenue stems from projects. We don't earn our livelihood as consultants but run self-sustained businesses. Thus our goal is to create tangible, market-oriented results that sustain stakeholders and benefit our private businesses in the long run.

Market Insights

We observe local and international trends, participate in travel fairs and exchange knowledge with leading operators in the Balkans, Europe and beyond. Our daily work creates a deep understanding of the market, its demand, interest and future trends.

Our familiarization trips host international journalists and individual influencers who create important exposure and high quality content. We contributed to several guide book editions to Albania. Various authors consult us for recommendations and input.

Distribution

Beyond the Zbulo travel brand (~20.000 visitors/year) and blog of Endrit's Trail (~5.000 visitors/year), our products are promoted by a network of >30 international partners, tour operators from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium and the UK.

A Network of Experts & Organizations

We’re part of domestic and international networks, linked with experts in the Balkans and worldwide.

International

As a scholarship holder of the Adventure Travel Trade Association we’re at the forefront of global tourism development and present Albania in the Northern American market.

Western Balkans

As contributors to the Western Balkans National Geographic Geotourism Network and Peaks of the Balkans steering committee, we set regional standards and maintain strong ties with like-minded organizations across the Balkans.

Industry Associations

As a board member of the Albanian Tour Operators Association (ATOA) we’re spearheading the local adventure travel industry and lobby the government on tourism issues.

Local Experts

Our network of local and professional experts and guides spans beyond Albania, providing us with eyes and ears in every part of the region.

Long-Term Engagement and Experienced Partners

Our work doesn’t end once a project finishes.

Partnerships

Strong partnerships with trusted stakeholders generate feedback, serve as best practices samples and multiplicators in our common effort.

To date and well beyond project timelines we remain active in every of our project areas to ascertain continuity and long term success.

This tour cover everything that Albania has to offer historically while sightseeing the amazing location and stunning scenery. It was done in an easy pace with beautiful and well thought of hotels. The transport was first class and the experience was not rushed. Daniel our tour guide was so knowledgeable of his subject and gave us great options for excellent restaurants and eateries. He went above and beyond his duties as a tour guide to ensure we had a stress free tour.. His driving skills were impeccable and we felt 100% safe at all times
Great tour. Covered a huge amount of the Balkans in a short space of time. This means a lot of driving to get from one place to another but if you are short of time this tour is perfect for seeing the highlights. One downside was the use of an electric car, which although was a noble attempt to be environmentally friendly, led to us having to stop a couple of times to charge. The places visited were very good. Our guide, Amarlido, was excellent - knowledgeable, good chat, and had great recommendations for things to see and places to eat. I had never prayed with a tour leader in a mosque before and this was an amazing experience for us! Overall, I would definitely recommend this tour group and itinerary.

A great experience cycling in this area. In particular, the Durmitor nationalpark, the Tara canyon and the descent to Kotor are absolute highlights. Despite booking a single room, you cannot always expect a single room die to hotel capacity. This was announced in good time by the tour guide.
Well organized trip through beautiful and challenging conditions and climbs

Amazing!!! Best thing I’ve ever done
Tour leader Dora was awesome. Very adaptable. Provided options on transport to save time & inconvenience. Gave us information on each place visited but didn't overload us like school children. Provided suggestions on places to visit, restaurants, etc during free time. Hotels & guest houses all very good. Would have liked to stay 2 nights in Berat instead of 1. That is our 2nd Intrepid tour, will definitely keep recommending to friends. Linda Arlaud & Rodney Barnes

The Tour was great! I saw a lot of Albania in the 5 days, cities, lakes, mountains, castles, thermal springs and UNESCO-sites. I traveled with Rei and Genci (2,5 days with each of them), both were wonderful and very kind tour guides, tirelessly answering my many questions and sharing a lot of interesting details about life in Albania. They were always ready to show me something extra which was not on the plan. I enjoyed my time so much - thank you to you both! 5 stars!

Our entire tour Classical Albania was terrific. From our arrival at the Tirana airport to our transport to the ferry ending our adventure we experienced nothing but great hospitality, expert information about the history, culture and current issues in the country. Thank you Nikko! Our experience was truly a life time memory. A special praise for the staff at the Classic Hotel in Tirana. We were welcomed warmly on our arrival and were sorry to leave when we departed. Thank you Tour Radar for all your help. Becky and Dave Skeen Columbus, Ohio USA

  • Excellent - 7 reviews for Albania tours
I undertook this tour in April, out of season, but with wonderful hot sunny weather on most days. This meant that in many of the places we stayed, some of the restaurants were closed, but the advantage was that there no crowds. The tour was an excellent introduction to this fascinating country and its complicated history. Throughout the tour was very well organised and our guide Edmund was excellent - very knowledgeable and with a great personality and sense of humour. He provided the perfect balance of guided tours of the sites and free time. The tour covers quite a distance, but the coach was comfortable with plenty of space, and our driver was really excellent. The hotels used were clean and comfortable but overall the breakfasts were average. In a country where there is so much fresh fruit it was a pity not to see more of this prepared for the breakfast buffet. There was a good mixture of visits to sites of historical interest and those of natural beauty. Some, such as the amphitheatre in Durres were a little underwhelming, but others - Berat, Apollonia, Butrint and Gjirokaster were truly magnificent. I only regret that I didn't take the longer tour that included Lake Ohrid. In short, this was an excellent introduction to a country with a fascinating history, beautiful scenery and very friendly people. I look forward to returning in the future to explore more of the delights of Albania.
Albania has it all and this tour gives you a taste which will have you coming back for seconds and more. I was blessed with a truly amazing guide who figured me our immediately and knew that the day needed to be 2 halves culture and beach life and my word does this tour exceed the expectations. I mean it is hard to find a fault with Albania. Perhaps the roads need some improvement but even all the pot holes add to the experience. The food and quality is beyond what I expected. But to Albanian express they need to be commended for the amazing programme that they provide it is amazing. This is a country and company that will have you returning again and again.

It has been an amazing tour which totally changed our impression of Albania. We are so blessed to have Albi as our guide and driver. It is because of Albi that we know everything about Albania and realize what a wonderful country Albania is. We also appreciate his excellent driving skills taking us went through hilly, bumpy and rocky roads. The weather was extremely good. No rain for all 4 days and very warm temperatures is what we were looking forward to. The tourist sites selected are fantastic, which cover different types of scenery, Mountains and rivers, Sea beach and islands, historical heritages and wine yards etc. We also extremely enjoyed the Albania food all the way. In general Albania people are very friendly to tourists, they always try their best to help us. I am sure I will go to Albania again.
Zeni made this trip into the history, culture and cuisine of Albania unbelievably precious. He gave us a gift that we will always treasure. Thank you, Zeni 🤩 Unbelievably special 💐

It was a great tour. My only criticism is there really wasn’t enough time build in to see all of the suggested place due to driving times. It probably should be a couple of days longer.
Our overall experience was excellent. The itinerary was packed with lots to do and learn about Albania while also offering down time to relax and stroll around at our own pace. Communication with the organisers and guides of our trip was very easy and enjoyable. The guides were super lovely, accommodating and helpful- they were able to tailor our itinerary to include the hotels we liked and ensured we were ready to go with a pre-routed GPS.

Albania is a fascinating country, and this tour showed us much of the southern half of it. Our leader, Irina, was excellent, so too, our driver. The hotels were good, as was the vehicle we travelled in.
All interesting

Adventure and Fun Albania

Adventure and Fun Albania

The overall experience was excellent. The itinerary was well planned and offered diverse activities and sightseeing. The hotels were very nice, and the meals were excellent. The small group of 6 travelers plus our guide made for a memorable experience for everyone. We traveled well together and everyone was considerate of other people's needs and preferences. Our guide was a veritable gem, as he was very educated and knew everything about Albania. He lived through the Communist Times and told us so many stories about what people went through during the dictatorship. The places we visited were spectacular: we went to beautiful caves and swimming spots on the Ionian Sea in small boats twice; we also had the opportunity to go up into the mountains and enjoy hiking there; we were also amazed at the ancient sites of the Roman and Greek civilizations from 9th-7th century BC.
Professionally run company with all details of the trip taken care of from the moment I booked, My guide, Denis, was brilliant ensuring my safety and setting a pace I could handle. The scenery is spectacular and every day was different. The guest houses were comfortable and the food provided was very good and plentiful. A memorable hiking experience I highly recommend.

We enjoyed our tour in general. Erion was a knowledgeable guide whose deep love of Albania imbued our tour with a delightful spirit. Some of the hotels were better than others, but none were truly horrible. We feel that there was one too many ethnographic museums. Goshi was an awesome driver.
Great trip. Particularly enjoyed the days in the mountains.

Tour Operators Fear War Will Affect Tourism

Albanian tour operators predicted an increase in the number of Ukrainian tourists in 2022 before the start of the conflict, although bookings had just begun and no concrete data can be provided.

The head of the Albanian Association of Tour Operators and Travel Agencies, Rexhep Kasmi, said for Scan TV that the impact of the Ukraine-Russia war could be recovered if the conflict ends quickly for the summer period.

According to Kasmi, the number of tourists from Ukraine, who have traveled to Albania every year has increased by an average 20-30%, and although it does not play an important role in tourism in general, will be missing income for the sector.

As for attracting tourists from other countries, Kasmi said that this is not easy for tour operators, but according to him if the war continues it will affect not only tourists from Ukraine or Russia, but also beyond, not excluding tourists from Poland, who also occupy a significant place in the number of foreign tourists coming to Albania.

Meanwhile, Kasmi also said that Albanian hotels and travel agencies should provide tolerance for cancellations.

According to INSTAT data, the total number of foreign nationals who visited Albania jumped 114% year-on-year in 2021, reaching 5.7 million.

The number of domestic tourists rose by an annual 42.2% to 3.9 million. Overall, the total number of domestic and foreign tourists soared 77.4% year-on-year to 9.6 million in the year under review.

The largest number of international visitors in 2021 came from Kosovo - 2.6 million, North Macedonia - 560,213, Italy - 354,370, Montenegro - 319,770 and Greece - 276,915.

In 2020, the number of foreign visitors to Albania decreased by 58.5% year-on-year to 2.66 million.

Coordinates of Elektrostal in decimal degrees

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
