Start your holiday quickly and easily with “Ready to Fly”

Thanks to the time-saving “Ready to Fly” document check, KLM passengers will be able to save time during the May holiday period by having their Covid-19-related entry documents checked from home or abroad. Using this hassle-free service, they can have items such as negative PCR tests, health certificates and vaccination certificates validated quickly and easily prior to their trip. This will save time and provide peace of mind once they begin their journey, ensuring all the necessary Covid-19-related documents are in order. The “Ready to Fly” service will be available to passengers traveling to a wide range of destinations.

This is how it works

A few days before departure, passengers for selected KLM flights will be asked by email to gather the documents needed for their trip. They can upload the relevant documents up to five hours before departure. KLM will then check them and reply by email – usually within an hour. After receiving an “OK”, passengers can check in online at KLM.nl (or using the KLM app) and obtain their boarding pass, which will state “Ready to Fly”. At the airport, passengers will only be required to present their passport or ID card, and a visa if necessary. As such, they will have peace of mind throughout their journey.

Destinations

KLM’s “Ready to Fly” service will be available to passengers flying from or through Amsterdam to Bonaire, Brazil, Canada, Curacao, Dubai, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Istanbul, Italy, Kenya, Lima, Nigeria, Portugal, St Martin, South Africa, Spain and the United States. KLM’s new Travel Well platform aims to help travelers rediscover the joy and meaning of air travel

W ithout a doubt, travel has changed my life and the lives of many others. Growing up in Connecticut, we rarely traveled by plane since I have three siblings and airfares were a lot more expensive back then. Also, traveling by plane back then was a rarity unless you were a business traveler.

Today, obviously things are much different. With the rise of so many airlines and social media showing friends, family and followers how easy and fun travel can be, it’s become a regular thing for many families – including mine.

To give you an idea how much my kids have flown in their young lives (they’re aged four and seven) they’ve traveled more in a six-month period than my grandparents on both sides combined did in their lifetimes. Think about that. And many of their classmates have traveled about the same or more.

Things are just different these days and I’m grateful to be living during this time. It’s so exciting to get on a plane and go to a new destination, to see family or to leave cold weather and experience the tropics in the winter.

In a recent brand update, KLM launched its Travel Well platform, a key messaging initiative surrounding the power of travel and bringing people together around the world. Many people forget the magic of air travel. The way gigantic machines can transport people, ideas, merchandise and memories across oceans. KLM, like other airlines, does this daily. In fact, KLM is the oldest airline operating under the same name in the world for more than a century.

Each year, the carrier takes more than 30 million travelers around the world to, from and through its Amsterdam hub. But not all travelers are created equally. You have business travelers facing long meetings to close important deals. There are families winging away to their favorite vacation spot. There are students traveling afar to attend university in another country. Some people are traveling for months or even years at a time away from family and loved ones. Others are taking quick weekend getaways to someplace new. When the wheels touch down on the runway, the excitement has been building, no matter what the reason for the trip.

Travel Well promotes this idea of traveling deeper and squeezing more appreciation and meaning from each trip. And after several years of a global pandemic that closed borders and hindered travel planning, the anticipation has been building.

KLM conducted a survey of more than 8,000 people across the globe in key markets it serves like the U.S., Canada, Brazil, China, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Their findings were revealing.

Clocking in as one of the top countries for this sentiment, 59% of Americans say travel has become more meaningful after the pandemic. Among American travelers, 79% of Americans focus on making meaningful connections with people and places, perhaps by staying longer or doing more immersive activities, when they travel.

“Quality, not quantity, defines each journey,” says Barry ter Voert, CXO & EVP Business Development at KLM. “This, I believe, is one of the most wonderful aspects of travel.”

KLM’s survey found that Gen Z and Millennials prefer traveling with family and friends instead of solo trips and look for activities and authentic interactions with locals that stimulate personal growth. Gen Z travelers have a shocking admission, too. 39% of them say that too much technology, like cell phone use on a trip, can hinder the feeling of total immersion in a place.

U.S. travelers especially like to immerse themselves in local culture through interactions with people, food and experiences. The survey did find that new cultures are not always a priority for Americans as much as more immersive experiences.

Families are traveling more often, according to a recent survey by Beaches Resorts, which surveyed (via their parents) Gen Alpha, those born between 2010 and 2024. This will be the largest generation in history with more than 2.8 million people born weekly.

85% of these children have some input on where they travel, and they enjoy traveling with their parents and grandparents. Multi-generational trips are the perfect example of the messaging KLM is trying to convey with this new brand platform. Exploring new places with family and friends doubles down on traveling deeper and better. Since many of these kids travel often enough with their families, they may even be inching closer to airline elite status. That’s just the icing on the cake for the slogan “travel well.”

“Traveling not only helps us reach new places, but also introduces us to unique experiences, leading to greater inspiration and understanding,” ter Voert concludes. KLM’s updated logo, which includes the Travel Well slogan, reminds everyone of that.

I’ve flown KLM only once or twice before but never with my kids but I’m planning to take them to Europe next summer. Hopefully, the day after my kids get out of school, we will be on one of KLM’s plush widebody planes, flying from Los Angeles to Amsterdam and beyond.

Global IT Outage Sparks Travel Chaos as 4,000+ Flights Canceled Worldwide

Gordon Smith and Peden Doma Bhutia, Skift

July 19th, 2024 at 2:26 PM EDT

Computer problems are nothing new for airlines and airports, but the scale of Friday's outage is without recent parallel, with Delta and United among those badly hit.

Airlines around the world are attempting to recover from a catastrophic global IT outage. Companies in the United States, UK, India, and Australia are among those badly affected.

Earlier on Friday, Delta Air Lines “paused” all flights in its global network as it “worked through a vendor technology issue.” United Airlines was among the other big names to halt all departures, with problems “impacting [its] ability to access reservation tools” for rebooking passengers. The carrier has since restarted some services.

Elsewhere, Canada’s Porter Airlines cancelled all departures until 12pm ET, and Eurowings scrapped all domestic German and UK services until 3pm CET.

As of 12pm ET (4pm GMT), aviation analytics firm Cirium said 4,295 flights had been canceled globally on Friday, with thousands more delayed. This number is expected to rise throughout the day.

KLM said on X on Friday morning that the cyber challenges had made “flight handling impossible,” resulting in the Dutch national carrier “largely suspending operations.”

All Delta flights are paused as we work through a vendor technology issue. Any customers whose flights are impacted will be notified by Delta via the Fly Delta app and text message. Customers should use the Fly Delta app for updates. — Delta News Hub (@DeltaNewsHub) July 19, 2024

What Caused the Outages?

The root cause of the problem appears to be a software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. George Kurtz, the company’s CEO, said on X that “a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts,” was causing disruption to customers.

Kurtz added that the issue has since been “identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed.” He said the outages were not caused by a security incident or cyber attack.

Even if the technical problem has been fixed, the knock-on impact to affected airlines and airports is likely to continue throughout the day, and could get worse before it gets better. Earlier Microsoft said it was taking “mitigation actions” after service issues, according to the AFP news agency. Heathrow Airport was among the big name organizations to reference Microsoft in its statement on the issue. Microsoft said the outage started around 6pm ET (10pm GMT) on Thursday.

What Are Major Airports Saying?

Plane tracking service Flightradar24 reported severe delays affecting arrivals and departures at major airports around the world on Friday. Heathrow, Las Vegas, and Sydney are among the international hubs that faced serious problems.

Denver Airport confirmed “various airlines are impacted,” and said some of its parking lots were closed due to “ticket dispensing issues.”

We are following reports of a Microsoft outage affecting airlines and airports all around the world. Delays and cancellations are expected. pic.twitter.com/Tf7jy1Ov2m — Flightradar24 (@flightradar24) July 19, 2024

Spanish airport operator Aena said that all of its locations are now operational, but warned that many airlines are rescheduling their flights for the remainder of Friday.

Edinburgh Airport in Scotland was among those asking passengers due to travel today not to come to the terminal without checking with their airline first.

ℹ️| Update – IT system outage. Passengers should not travel to the airport without first checking the status of their flight with their airline. The wait at security is currently around one hour due to the outage and our teams are managing this as best they can. — Edinburgh Airport (@EDI_Airport) July 19, 2024

Meanwhile Ryanair advised all passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before departure as it “experiences disruption across its network.”

Airlines and airports are no stranger to IT problems . Online travel businesses are also vulnerable to shutdowns, with the Expedia Group’s global outage in May a recent high profile example . However, the depth and scale of the current difficulties that impacted the aviation sector on Friday is without recent precedent.

Indian Flights Hit Hard by IT Outage

All airlines in India have reported outages including Air India, Vistara, Indigo, Akasa Air, Air India Express and SpiceJet.

Carriers such as IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa had reported technical glitches impacting services like booking tickets and web check-in since 10:45am local time on Friday.

The Air India Group has asked guests to plan their travel accordingly and keep sufficient time in hand for airport procedures.

Akasa Air said on Friday that its online services like booking, check-in and manage booking services were temporarily unavailable. It was processing manual check-in and boarding processes at airports and requested passengers with immediate travel plans to reach the airport early.

The Microsoft / CrowdStrike outage has taken down most airports in India. I got my first hand-written boarding pass today 😅 pic.twitter.com/xsdnq1Pgjr — Akshay Kothari (@akothari) July 19, 2024

Adani Airports, which operates airports in major cities across India said: “A global IT outage has affected operations, impacting flights nationwide. During this time, booking, check-in, access to boarding passes, and flights are likely to be affected…”

The Picture Across Asia-Pacific

Singapore’s Changi Airport said that the check-in process for some airlines is being managed manually. The airport said its ground staff is providing assistance to passengers, “especially those with an impending departure.”

Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific announced that self-service check-in facilities at Hong Kong International Airport were unavailable. Sydney Airport said departures and arrivals were continuing, but major delays should be expected, adding: “We have activated our contingency plans and deployed additional staff to our terminals.”

However, the chaos for passengers has not been universal. In a statement to Skift, a Dubai Airports spokesperson confirmed the hub is “operating normally” after disruption to check-in processes for some airlines at Terminals 1 and 2 in the morning.

“The affected airlines promptly switched to an alternate system, allowing normal check-in operations to resume swiftly,” the spokesperson said.

The aviation industry is not alone in facing technical problems on Friday. There are reports of outages and other IT failures at banks, hospitals, and other organizations around the world.
