Endemic means native to a certain area or place..

We are two born and bred Capetonians who grew up in a Cape Flats community, these communities were developed during the apartheid regime where families were forcibly removed. After completing school in 2010 and not sure which direction to take we both decided to start day jobs to find where we want to be in the future. One of us started working at Cape Point and fell in love with the industry, the rest is history. This was the start to both our careers within the travel and tourism industry, we both now have grown immensely within the field and decided to use our skills and expertise to curate the most memorable experiences for guests visiting our beautiful shores.

Our route will take us along the mind-blowing coastal road of Clarens Drive, stopping in the small coastal town of Rooi-Els where we will embark on a relaxed nature walk along the mountain side, after which we will head further along the coast to Betties Bay to visit the unique African Penguin colony at Stoney Point, before settling down in the beautiful Harold Porter Botanical Gardens for lunch and a final nature walk.

BIRDING HIGHLIGHTS On this day trip we will be looking for specials including: • Cape Rockjumper • Cape Rock Thrush • Ground Woodpecker • Cape Siskin • Cape Sugarbird • Orange-breasted Sunbird • Malachite Sunbird • Verreaux’s Eagle • Rufous-breasted Sparrowhawk • African Penguin • Crowned, Cape and Bank Cormorant • African Oystercatcher • Cape Spurfowl • Victorin’s Warbler • Protea Seedeater

While in Rooi-Els we will take a relaxed walk along the lower slopes of the Klein-Hangklip mountain in search of several Cape endemic bird species such as the Cape Rock Thrush, Ground Woodpecker, Cape Siskin, Cape Sugarbird, Orange-breasted Sunbird, Malachite Sunbird and, Cape Town’s most alluring endemic, the Cape Rockjumper. Also keep an eye out for Verreaux’s Eagle and Rufous-breasted Sparrowhawk overhead.

Next stop, the coastal town of Betty’s Bay where we will be taking a short walk to see the African Penguin colony at Stony Point Nature Reserve. Apart from all the adorable penguins waddling around us, we will keep a sharp lookout for a few special birds along the shoreline such as the Crowned, Cape and Bank Cormorant, as well as chances of seeing the threatened African Oystercatcher.

After a waddle around the stony Point penguin colony we will take a short drive to the beautiful Harold Porter Botanical Gardens where we will sit down for lunch followed by a peaceful stroll around these charming gardens in search of some of the special bird species.

Also set in Betty’s Bay, The Harold Porter National Botanical Garden, tranquilly set between mountains and sea, allows for a diversity in habitats and presenting excellent bird watching opportunities, boasting an astounding 96 recorded species. And although Harold Porter is far less known compared to its big sister Kirstenbosch, the birding is arguably better in terms of endemics. A few of the endemics which we can expect to see with a bit of luck include Cape Sugarbird, Orange-breasted Sunbird, Cape Siskin, Cape Spurfowl, Victorin’s Warbler, Protea Seedeater and Ground Woodpecker. Other nice birds here include Cape Bulbul, Jackal Buzzard, Karoo Prinia, Southern Boubou and Olive Woodpecker.

Concluding our trip at Harold Porter we will make our way back along the scenic coast road back to your accommodation in Cape Town, hopefully with a long list of endemics added!

Take a look inside Cape Cod’s Red Jacket Resorts following a $40 million makeover

Cape Cod travelers staying at Red Jacket Resorts  this summer will reap the rewards of a $40 million renovation.

New England has some of the top-ranked fishing, biking, kayaking tours in the U.S.

EOS Hospitality, which acquired the Red Jacket Resorts portfolio in 2021, has renovated three of its five South Yarmouth-based oceanfront hotels in time for the 2024 summer season:  Red Jacket Beach Resort , Riviera Beach Resort , and  Blue Water Resort .

The renovations came after extensive research into what families are seeking in travel accommodations, the company noted earlier this year .

As a result, vacationers will find changes in nearly 400 guest rooms, cottages, and family suites, restaurants, lobbies, pool experiences, and beachfront amenities across the three properties.

Red Jacket Beach Resort has updated its 163 rooms and added family-friendly suites complete with king beds and full-sized bunks with private nooks. Guests can also book entire homes with full hotel and amenity access that accommodate up to 12 guests.

All 125 rooms at Riviera Beach Resort were transformed and a Family Suite was added that sleeps up to eight people and boasts four queen beds. 

Blue Water Resort’s 109 rooms were also redesigned, and there’s a new Two Bed — Two Bunk Suite that sleeps up to eight people. Dog-friendly rooms are also available.

Renovated restaurants across the properties include Red Jacket Beach Resort’s Tides & Tavern , located between the pool and beach, and Crow’s Nest ; Riviera Beach Resort’s The Deck and Boat Bar, and Blue Water Resort’s Four Beaches .

Four Beaches has “a snack shack and tiki bar feel with seasonal favorites and rolling views of the Nantucket Sound,” according to the team.

In the pool and beach areas, the renovated properties are sporting all-new daybeds and chaise lounges, updated landscaping, and new “summer-centric” amenities.

The company is beefing up its family-friendly programming and will reprise and introduce partnerships with brands such as Blue Man Group, Cisco Brewing, L.L. Bean, and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.

Cape Cod’s Hydrangea Festival , taking place July 5-14, will bring a week of special programming to the resorts. This summer, vacationers can also enjoy outdoor movies, beach yoga, pirate and nautical themed activities for kids, a video game truck, and more. Guests can check out all of the summer events on the resort’s calendar .

Returning to Red Jacket Resorts is the popular Sea Service at Red Jacket Beach Resort’s South Shore Drive private beach, billed as the mid Cape’s only on-the-beach food and beverage service.

Red Jacket Resorts includes five properties: Red Jacket Beach Resort, Blue Water Resort, Riviera Beach Resort, Green Harbor Resort, and Blue Rock Resort. The renovations are the first phase of a collection-wide renovation.

Guests wearing a wristband have access to all five properties while staying at Red Jacket Resorts.
