Arequipa City Tour

Make your way through the cobbled-stone streets of Arequipa and start a journey towards colonial times, discovering its secrets and exceptionally-preserved beauty. The Historical City Center of Arequipa is one of the most visually striking urban sceneries in Peru since it holds the pure essence of an important era in our country.

Even if you’re not into history that much, you surely won’t like to miss visiting these outstanding colonial structures, where the city seemed to grow exponentially over time without leaving the features that make it unique behind.

Arequipa’s old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, housing over 500 historical monuments that date back to the 18th century. Each colonial mansion, administrative center, and religious temple is built with Sillar Blanco, a volcanic stone that originated thousands of years ago, the reason behind the famous name: White City of Arequipa.

Part of Peru’s extensive history is told in each corner of the city. The colonial era is heavily marked in these streets, and though there’s so much more to know, Arequipa will certainly give you a glimpse at one of the most important times in our society.

What to See?

The tour will take you through the main streets of the historical center, and our guide will tell you about the history of each place and the city itself. Here’s what you’re going to visit:

1. Plaza de Armas Like most colonial centers in Peru, Arequipa also holds a beautiful main square at its heart, from where the city was distributed and the main religious buildings were built. This location will be the starting point of the tour, where you’re going to learn about the history that makes this city so unique.

From here, you’ll get to see the Cathedral of Arequipa, La Compañía de Jesús Church, and Nuestra Señora de la Merced Church, three catholic temples built with the emblematic volcanic rock of the region.

2. Yanahuara Viewpoint Right at the heart of one of the oldest neighborhoods in Arequipa’s old town, lies the Yanahuara Viewpoint, a special place composed of several sillar portals that overlook the entire colonial barrio and grant a splendid view of the Chachani and Misti volcanoes.

The famous Yanahuara Viewpoint in Arequipa was founded in 1750, just next to the San Juan de Yanahuara Church. On the way to this attraction, you’ll be captivated by the cobbled stone streets and old sillar houses along the route.

3. Carmen Alto Viewpoint Located 4 kilometers from the main square, at the right side of the Chili Volcano, lies an outstanding viewing spot that overlooks the entire Chili Valley. The Carmen Alto Viewpoint will let you admire the entire natural scenery, where beautiful croplands, pre-Inca terraces, and the imposing Chachani and Misti volcanoes will leave you spellbound by their beauty.

4. Balneario de Tingo It is a recreational park composed of several outdoor attractions like swimming pools, courts, an artificial lagoon, and much more. On our stop here, you’ll be able to ride a horse or even take a boat trip through the lagoon (both optional).

5. Mansión del Fundador One of the most important colonial mansions is located on the outskirts of Arequipa. The Mansión del Fundador was owned by the founder of Arequipa, Garcí Manuel de Carbajal. The site offers an extensive collection of colonial artwork, furniture, and much more. You’ll be able to uncover every one of its rooms while having a glimpse at what life was like during that era.

6. Molino de Sabandia It dates back to 1621, meaning that it’s a 400-year-old mill tower built entirely of white ashlar, the volcanic rock found in the quarries of the Chachani Volcano. The mill is located in the Sabandia district, 20 minutes away from the historic center.

7. Paucarpata Terraces Paucarpata is one of the oldest districts in Arequipa, it was founded in 1572 though it was inhabited hundreds of years ago by a civilization that predated the Incas. These beautiful terraces are recognized for the flourishing vegetation that grows in them, offering an authentic scenery of Arequipa’s countryside.

The Arequipa City Tour will take you on a journey across the different attractions of the region, showing you the contrast between the colonial era and the nature that surrounds the entire city.

Arequipa main square

Arequipa is the second most populous city in Peru. Founded on August 15, 1540, with the name “Vila Hermosa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunta,” by the order of Marquis Francisco Pizarro. It possesses great cultural and natural diversity with deep canyons, wonderful beaches, snow-capped peaks, and impressive white-walled buildings that preserve their historical and religious legacy.

Useful information

Location: Arequipa is situated in the southwest of Peru, facing the Pacific Ocean, with 528 km of coastline. Due to its location, it serves as the commercial center of southern Peru, as well as a tourist corridor in the south of Peru.

Altitude: The city of Arequipa is located at an altitude of 2328 meters above sea level.

Climate: Arequipa’s climate is predominantly dry during winter, autumn, and spring due to atmospheric humidity. Arequipa justifies its nickname “City of the Eternal Blue Sky” due to temperatures that don’t exceed 25°C and rarely drop below 10°C. The wet season occurs between December and March and is characterized by afternoon clouds and sparse nighttime precipitation. Winter, from June to July, has a colder climate, with temperatures dropping to 10°C, but the dry climate helps to mitigate the intensity of the cold.

Best time to visit: The best time to visit Arequipa is in August, during the first half of the month. This is when the city celebrates its foundation with numerous fairs, bullfights, fireworks, tourist activities, and recreational events. It’s important to note that from January to March, there’s moderate rainfall, and during the rest of the year, as mentioned before, the climate remains stable with minimal changes between the seasons.

How to get there

The traditional ways to reach Arequipa are by air and by bus:

  • By Air: The city of Arequipa has the Teniente FAP Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón Airport, recently renovated with comfortable facilities and good services. It operates daily flights from Lima, Cusco, and Puno (Juliaca).
  • By Land: The city of Arequipa is connected to the cities of southern Peru by the Pan-American Highway, accessed from Tacna and Chile. There are regular daily bus services to and from Arequipa, Cusco, Puno, Tacna, Nazca, and others.

Arequipa is a city of great cultural and geographical richness, and it’s a must-visit for those traveling to this destination. Here are its main tourist attractions:

  • Monastery of Santa Catalina:  Built to house the daughters of the city’s wealthiest families, the monastery was inaugurated on October 2, 1580, as a center of absolute seclusion. It covers an area of 20,000 m² and was renovated to become an art gallery exhibiting paintings from the Cusco, Arequipa, and Quito schools. It features other areas for visitors, such as the Cloister of the Portería, the Pre-Columbian Museum, the Cloister of San Francisco, the Amazon Museum, etc.
  • Misti Volcano:  Misti, with its 5825 meters, has always been the symbol of Arequipa. From its summit, you can see the city of Arequipa, the Chili River valley, and the Chachani and PichuPichu volcanoes.
  • Chivay and the Colca Valley:  The capital of the province where the Calera thermal baths are located. Its beautiful landscapes and villages surrounded by diverse terraces are inhabited by the descendants of the Collagua and Cabana people. The first town you reach is Chivay, with a variety of tourist services like Cabanaconde and Cruz del Cóndor, a viewpoint from which you can admire the majestic flight of the condor and the depth of the Colca Canyon, where you can go rafting in rafts, canoes, and kayaks.
  • Archaeological remains of the Waca or Puerto Inca Gorge:  An archaeological complex that stands out for its extensive occupation, with remains dating from the pre-ceramic period to the 14th and 15th centuries, indicating Inca presence. Some archaeologists and historians believe that one of the most important Inca routes started from this place as it entered the Ayacucho territory, reaching Cusco.

More Information

Carmen alto viewpoint.

It is located in the Cayma District, and is located 6 km from the center of Arequipa and is owned by Mrs. Miriam Cáceres, who has a small business of natural products and traditional juices there.

In this haven of peace, we can be enchanted by the landscape, enjoying a wonderful view of the valley of the Chili River, joining in the distance with the tutelary volcanoes of the city.

St. Catherine’s Monastery

The Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena, or also known as the Convent of Santa Catalina, is a religious tourist complex located in the historic center of Arequipa.

What makes the visit especially interesting is that the monastery is itself a small city, 20,000m2 surrounded by a 4-meter-high wall that separated the life of the cloistered nuns from that of the rest of the inhabitants of Arequipa.

History of the Monastery of Santa Catalina

The history of the Monastery of Santa Catalina dates back to the 16th century. When the Spaniards were already settled in Peru, Francisco de Toledo visited the city of Arequipa and listened to the wishes of its inhabitants, who asked for the creation of a place where the nuns could carry out their work and have the religious life they desired.

Thus, the viceroy ordered the construction of a great monastery without knowing that, years later, it would become one of the most important in the country.

On September 10, 1579, when the city of Arequipa had not even reached 40 years since its foundation, the Santa Catalina Monastery was inaugurated, an authentic jewel of colonial architecture that remains standing to this day.

The first nuns who lived here came from different parts of the country and different social classes: they were Creoles, mestizos and even daughters of curacas, the political leaders of the Inca Empire, but they all shared one main characteristic: they had the same religious devotion.

The Monastery of Santa Catalina hosted hundreds of nuns for years who lived without practically any connection to the outside until, in 1970, they decided to open it to the public so that all tourists and citizens of Arequipa could know and enjoy this mysterious place.

How to get to the Santa Catalina Monastery?

The Santa Catalina Monastery is located just a few blocks from the city’s imposing Plaza de Armas, so you can get there from any point in the historic center of Arequipa.

At Dreamy Tours, we offer to take the City Tour in Arequipa that includes a guided visit to the Santa Catalina monastery, as well as other tourist attractions in the city.

What is the best time to visit the Monastery of Santa Catalina?

The city of Arequipa has a fairly stable climate, with moderate rainy seasons between January and March, so the visit to the monastery can be done without inconvenience throughout the year.

Visiting hours to the Santa Catalina Monastery?

The Santa Catalina Monastery is open every day of the year with the exception of Good Friday, December 25 and January 1. Hours are Thursday through Monday from 9:00 a.m. m. at 5:00 p.m. m. and Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 9:00 a.m. m. to 8 p. m.

The Cloisters of the Society of Jesus

The Cloisters of the Society of Jesus were built attached to the Temple, its completion date was in the year 1738.

For a short time it was the premises of the Jesuit College “Santiago”, since then the expulsion of the Jesuits was ordered in 1767.

In 1788, at the request of Bishop Chávez de la Rosa, part of the Cloisters became a hospice for orphaned children. After the Arequipa Public Charity was created, this institution took over the hospice, and for this reason reforms were introduced in the Cloisters.

The Cloisters consist of two large patios with arches and a third smaller one, the first one stands out for its Baroque style.

Currently the Cloisters are occupied by businesses related to tourist activity, such as restaurants, crafts, etc.

Located in the historic center, on the left side of the Iglesia de la Compañía, with sculpted ashlar arches, beautiful corridors; also called Pasaje Romaña, and currently occupied by commercial establishments. Located on the corner of the Plaza de Armas, between General Morán and Álvarez Thomas streets.

DESCRIPTION OF PLACES TO VISIT

Our experience showcases the most beautiful aspects of the city, visiting key places such as:

  • Yanahuara Neighborhood and Viewpoint:   Offers the opportunity to admire the ancient streets and its iconic church. This spot is frequently visited for its viewpoint, providing a view of the beautiful valley and the majestic Misti Volcano, the guardian of the city.
  • Paucarpata: Its name in Quechua translates to “flowered terrace” and is situated high on a mountain. In its descents, you’ll observe agricultural areas supported by impressive stone walls. It stands out for its marvelous church, which, when visited, reveals the vast art it holds.
  • Sabandia Mill:   A beautiful example of colonial architecture, estimated to have been built in 1621, made of ashlar stone. Despite the passage of time, the flow of water can still be witnessed through its ancient canals, keeping the mill in optimal condition. Currently, around 800 kilos of grains are ground here. From this point, a series of volcanoes can be seen, such as Chachani, Misti, and Pichupichu.
  • Santa Catalina Monastery:   It’s one of the main destinations when exploring the most relevant religious constructions of the colonial era in Peru. Its construction dates back to 1579. What makes this place peculiar is that upon entering, it resembles a small city, with streets and cloisters richly decorated with flowers, narrow alleys, and well-furnished rooms with ancient objects.

Arequipa City Tour With A Local Private Guide

Arequipa City Tour–Visit the southern city – Arequipa, the second largest in Peru, might be one of the most handsomes in the country. Founded in 1540, it retains an elegant historic center constructed almost entirely of sillar (a porous, white volcanic stone), which gives the city its distinctive look and the nickname la ciudad blanca, or “the white city.” Colonial churches, mansions, a splendid Plaza de Armas, and the sumptuous 16th-century Santa Catalina convent gleam beneath palm trees and a brilliant sun.

Ringing the city, in full view, are three delightfully named volcanic peaks: El Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu, all of which hover around 6,000m (20,000 ft.). And the city’s small Museo Santuarios Andinos holds an astounding local discovery: a perfectly preserved Inca teenage maiden sacrificed more than 500 years ago.

Pretty cityscapes aside, Arequipa has played a fundamental role in Peru’s gastronomic renaissance; classic spicy dishes such as rocoto relleno (stuffed spicy red peppers), chupe de camarones (prawn chowder) and ocopa (boiled potato in a creamy, spicy sauce) best enjoyed in the city’s communal picantería restaurants, all hail from here.

What Makes Us Different!… Here’s, Why You Should Book With Us!

Making a choice of your right travel company/ tour operator is the most important decision you will make as you make your plans for a long-anticipated dreamed adventure. At first glance, some companies may seem cheaper. However, when you research a little deeper, you will see why traveling with Peru Summit Adventures assures that you will have the most memorable travel experience possible. In fact, we guarantee it, our TripAdvisor reviews say that.

Making genuine and sustainable itineraries often translate to real costs, with a host of responsible travel practices that underpin our prices, here are the reasons why you should go with us!

1. We Focus on Details

Little insignificant details make all the difference to get a successful trip and an unforgettable experience, that’s the point where our tailor-made trip specialists and destination experts work intensely. No stone is left unturned in our quest to deliver exceptional private tours, trekking tours, and expeditions in Peru. With us, it’s all about you and your traveling mates too, for sure! We take your wants, needs, time constraints, budgets, and personal travel style into account to deliver experiences that are far from standard.

2. Our Safety Record is Flawless

Safety is at the core of everything we do at Peru Summit Adventures. There is nothing that we take more seriously. Put away your concerns and start enjoying the trip of your life knowing that you are on safe and sound hands. Peru Summit Adventures is a registered trademark and a licensed company by the Peruvian Ministry of Tourism (MINCETUR).

3. Knowledge and Expertise

What an awesome to travel with someone who is from the same destination, a professional expert, it’s how you get the first-hand information. Our Peru Summit Adventures staff are friendly, funny, with deep knowledge on the route and destination, and great storytellers. We love what we do and it’s obvious. A simple concept, yes, but it makes all the difference. The team at Peru Summit Adventures all live and breathe the trip, experience, adventure, (you’ll see this when you arrive!). We love what we do, and it’s obvious. From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel the buzz and excitement that Peru Summit Adventures offers.

4. We are Local Entrepreneurs, A Family Enterprise (we are not a gringo company)

Probably you will see that most of the tour operators mention it on their websites that are local tour companies, however, if you research a little deeper you will find out that’s not true, they might be although half of the operation is done from here and another half abroad, they even have NorthAmerican phone number or European phone numbers, which is a clue to find out, we are not against the foreigner companies or half foreign companies, what we are against is that they lie.

In Cusco exist just few truly local tour operators. If you did not know, foreign companies come to Peru to get rich without paying a General Sales Tax or Tax Contribution to our country. If you did not know that, according to the United Nations, for every US $100 spent on a tour in a developing country or foreign travel companies, only $5 stays in the local economy. Normally, almost all of the money flows back to large companies operating outside the destination countries. As we are a local family enterprise, we guarantee that your travel expenditures will support the local economy, and improve the lives of Peruvians through contributing to general sales tax.

5. Responsible Travel

Be a responsible traveller! Let’s make this world a better place for everyone and for everyone that lives in it!  The natural environments that we travel to are fragile and abundant with beautiful culture and traditions that are often reliant on tourism. We have a responsibility as travelers to minimize the impact of our presence, protect what is delicate, and leave a positive influence everywhere we can.

As a locally owned and based Peruvian tour company, we integrate these practices into our in-country operations we are aiming for a style of travel that makes the world a better place for everyone, and for everyone that lives in it. Since our very first days as a tour operator, responsible business has been at the heart of what we do. Peru Summit Adventures is committed not just to treading lightly, but to making a real difference by helping and investing in local communities, education initiatives, environmental conservation projects. These values are not more than just words, they are ingrained in the culture and philosophy of our crew, daily operations of Peru Summit Adventures trips, and at our office too.

Arequipa's Historic Center is the heart of the city and has been declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is full of beautiful colonial mansions, historic churches, charming squares and cobblestone streets. It is an ideal place to stroll and enjoy Spanish colonial architecture.

Main Square

Arequipa Main Square is the central point of the Historic Center and is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Peru. It is surrounded by the Cathedral Basilica of Arequipa, the Municipal Palace and other historic buildings. It is a perfect place to relax, enjoy the atmosphere and admire the colonial architecture.

The Cathedral of Arequipa

The Cathedral of Arequipa is one of the main tourist attractions of the city. It is an impressive work of colonial architecture built mainly with sillar, a white volcanic stone characteristic of the region. The cathedral houses a rich collection of religious art and offers guided tours to learn about its history and architecture.

Convent of the Company of Jesus

The Convent of the Compay of Jesús is a Jesuit convent built in the 16th century. It is famous for its impressive baroque facade carved in ashlar, as well as for its beautiful interior patios and chapels decorated with colonial religious art. It is one of the most outstanding examples of religious architecture in Arequipa.

Santa Catalina Convent, Arequipa

Arequipa City Tour

This tour concentrates on the beautiful Santa Catalina Convent, a walled colonial town within a city.

Opened to the public in 1970 after four centuries of secrecy, the remaining nuns have moved to a private corner of the convent allowing visitors to wander through the peaceful cobbled streets. The walls and cloisters are painted in shades of ocher and blue, and there are bright red and yellow flowers dotted throughout.

Also visited is the cathedral on the Plaza de Armas, recently restored after an earthquake in the late 1990s. The cathedral is home to reputedly one of the largest organs in South America and has a beautiful marble altar. Its setting with the imposing El Misti volcano towering behind is a beautiful site.

On the opposite side of the main square is the Iglesia La Compania with its elaborate sillar stone doorway.

Finally, you visit the Museo Santuarios de Altura, which recounts the expeditions to the peaks of some of the surrounding volcanoes in search of Inca mummies that are known to be resting there. On display here is the astonishingly well-preserved mummy of Juanita, a young Inca maiden sacrificed to the gods over 500 years ago.
