Consider adding security and other special features

You may want to look for a travel case that is lockable, so you can leave your watches with confidence if they’re beyond your reach while you’re in transit. Other features to consider are how discreet the watch case looks; if the worst happens and someone breaks into your luggage, you may not want a case that overtly screams, “Expensive watches in here!” Going for something a little more understated could therefore be its own form of security.

This is probably a bigger answer than you’d expect. The difference between a watch travel case and a watch roll is exactly what it sounds like — watch rolls store your watch in a rolled-up shape that mimics the shape of a human wrist. For more complicated and expensive watches, it can be better to store your watches in a rolled-up shape, which protects the structural integrity of the wrist band, and prevents the sliding and bunching which can sometimes happen in flat travel cases.

Care depends on the material of the watch travel case itself. Most cases are made from durable materials which can be cleaned with a soft cloth, or in some instances, a barely damp soft cloth. If your watch travel case is made from leather, you’ll also want to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for leather care (such as conditioning periodically) so that it lasts for many adventures to come.

Putting together the perfectly packed and organized travel bag is immensely satisfying, and if you’re traveling with your watch collection in tow, be sure to extend that satisfaction to your timepieces. A good case, roll or pouch should keep your watches safe and organized and be compact enough to fit in with the rest of your on-the-road gear – here are our favorites, ready for your next adventure.

What’s the difference between the options you have for carrying watches? It’s pretty straightforward. Watch rolls are relatively compact and they, well, roll right up to secure your watches from most risks they might face when traveling. What they don’t do is provide a hard outer shell that would protect a watch from pressure if it were, say, stored with other bags on top of it or which might shift around. Or if someone sat on your bag with your watch roll inside. Pouches offer similar considerations as rolls.

That said, watch rolls and pouches are usually more than sufficient, especially if you pack them carefully. Cases, on the other hand, do offer stiff material to protect watches from any such pressure. This is probably what you want if you’re carrying around delicate, high-value watches — though hard cases do tend to take up more room in your luggage that could be used for hotel soap.

What to Look for in Your Watch Travel Solutions

In addition to the above considerations, there are a few things you’ll want to look for in any solution for helping you travel with your watches. You’ll obviously take note of how many watches you can carry at once, but if you’ve got big watches, also pay attention to whether or not they’ll fit. Thick watches might not fit into pouches (including those in watch rolls) and they might make cases hard to close. Wide watches might cause similar issues. If you can’t tell from the specs or info offered by the seller, it’s advisable to ask.

Materials are another factor. These can affect everything from durability to style and even weight — the latter of which is always relevant to travelers. At the lower end of the spectrum, you really just need something utilitarian and hopefully durable. When you’re paying more money, though, you’re going to want to know that you’re getting nice materials and workmanship — depending on your budget you might want to look for real leather with nicer treatments, as opposed to the “PU” (for polyurethane, also known as “pleather”) often found on more affordable options.

Cases: While watch cases take up more room and tend to be heavier than rolls, they also serve to protect your watches much better. Often made from sturdier materials, these units will be better if you’re afraid of your timepieces getting crushed, and some of them even offer water- and dust-proof properties. Consider going with a case if you travel with more expensive or fragile watches.

Rolls: Watch rolls won’t be optimal for more rugged travel adventures, but they do offer a compact alternative to cases, able to accommodate several pieces without taking up nearly as much space. Likewise, they’re often more stylish and classy, made with attractive materials. 

Hybrids: There are also roll-type cases that are meant to be compact, usually cylindrical, and don’t require the watches to lie flat. However, these can also be a bit pricier.

What to Look For

Material: If you’re storing your roll or case inside of a backpack or bag, you’ll likely want to look for both interior and exterior materials that will hold up to repeated drops. Hard-shelled cases are optimal if you’re worried about another bag crushing yours. As for watch rolls, which have the potential of being more stylish and lightweight than their counterparts, you’re options will likely be either leather or canvas. Make sure you either sandwich these between piles of clothing or keep them on your person where you can make sure it doesn’t get crushed. As for interior materials, they will almost always be something soft like suede or satin.

Capacity: Most people only wear a couple of different timepieces per trip. I don’t just write about watches; like you, I genuinely love my watch collection. But when I started my collection, I ran into some problems that should sound familiar to any watch collector. Most travel cases have a little bit of extra space inside, which allows the watch to shift when the case is handled. You put your watch in the case, stick it in your luggage… and when you take it out, your bracelet or crystal is scratched.

As a novice collector, I was willing to put up with this. If we’re being honest, I didn’t have a choice. Fitment is a universal problem with affordable travel cases, and if I wanted to spend money on a more expensive case, it would set me back on my next watch purchase!

But when I bought my Rolex air-king in 2015 , I knew I had a real investment piece. This watch required a reliable travel case that wouldn’t scratch the crystal or case. That’s why I founded WATCHPOD® – a watch accessories brand specializing in the safe transportation and storage of watches.

Of course, there are many other companies producing their own watch cases. Here are my thoughts on the best.

To better protect your watch, a WATCHPOD case is shaped like a flat donut. The outer shell is rigid, and the inner surface is entirely padded. Here’s the thing; a travel case is not a display case, and they don’t need to share the same design philosophy. A display case is designed for displaying your watch at home. You want it to look nice, especially if you enjoy showing off your collection. Since it’s not going to get jostled around a lot, protection is a secondary concern.

A travel case, on the other hand, is designed first and foremost to keep your watch safe. It doesn’t matter how “nice” it looks if your Rolex gets scratched inside. Besides which, it can be wise to avoid a luxury leather travel case. Those cases scream “expensive,” and can leave you vulnerable to theft.

To that end, WATCHPOD travel cases are designed to look as nondescript as possible. The stiff outer shell is made from plain black 1680 denier nylon or brown faux leather. All in all, this is the best choice for Rolex collectors because of its superior protection. Your watch won’t move around inside the case, and the hard shell will keep your investment safe. It’s compact, it’s portable, and it costs less than you’d spend on lunch at a restaurant. And with its discreet design, it’s unlikely to attract thieves.

That said, I’ve listened to my customers, and apparently watch collectors really, really like leather cases. To that end, WATCHPOD will be rolling out a new premium line with the same basic design but a suede or leather shell. Unfortunately, supply chain issues have put this on hold for the time being.

Bosphorus Leather is well-known for their premium, handmade leather cases. Founded by master leatherworker Adam Arslan, all of their cases are made by hand by seasoned artisans. As you might expect, these cases are anything but cheap! But any time you buy something that’s not mass-produced, you can expect to pay a premium.

Bosphorus Leather manufactures a variety of watch cases, from single-watch travel cases to large display cases. Not long ago, I reviewed their Saffiano Dark Brown case , which holds a whopping 10 watches. You can order the same case with up to a 15-watch capacity. But most people will want one of Bosphorus’ smaller cases when they’re going on the road.

Make no mistake; these are premium cases. The craftsmanship is outstanding, and you can order multiple colors and designs. The cases also mostly bridge the gap between display cases and travel cases, since they won’t allow your watch to wiggle around. Then again, there’s a major downside; they’re expensive and obvious, making them a target for theft when traveling.

The cases are literally cylinders, with no extra features or flourishes. Furthermore, the closures aren’t very intuitive. If you somehow manage to get them wrong, your watch can wiggle around and end up getting scratched. If you’re going to go this route, make sure you’re familiar with the closure before you actually use the case.

I am puzzled by your choice. I also have a collection of watches and don’t know where to put them when they’re out of the safe. Not in 15 boxes it’s far too bulky and not travel friendly. I think the best option would a flat pouch preferably zipped and lined in soft fabric or suede. This pouch would absolutely not roll because that’s impractical when storing watches especially the bulky ones. Any idea? Thanks.

What about my choices are puzzling you? Our Watchpod travel case is designed specifically for travel and storage. It stops any movement of the watch inside the case, it’s compact, protective, and quite importantly it’s under the radar when travelling. I’ve personally been using them for over 8 years now (since our founding in 2015) and they’ve been extremely convenient for me. If you’re planning on travelling with 15 watches this requires a custom solution and is not and everyday situation for many collectors. Cheers!

The combination of full-grain leather on the outer flap and their new X-Pac canvas material makes for a nice, well-rounded package.

Overall, I think this is a great option for someone who isn’t looking for a large backpack but more of a slick and minimal messenger bag look. You can also fit much more than I thought you could fit in the bag itself. The compact size is $229 and the full size is $239, which is very competitive pricing when considering the build quality and materials.

Woolnut Leather Folio Case

The M4 iPad Pro is not a cheap package, especially when considering the additional Apple accessories. I spent around $1800 on my 1TB iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro. So, the first thing I did was to make sure I had a safe way to store my iPad while still being able to bring it with me. The new Leather folio by Woolnut was perfect. This is essentially a perfectly sized leather sleeve that fits your M4 iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro. The outside is made of full-grain leather, which smells fantastic, and the inside is made of this extremely soft and satisfying wool felt. So, it will still be protected even if you place your iPad in the sleeve without the keyboard.

ProtoArc USB- C Hub Mouse

I love it when a product can serve multiple functions. This mouse by ProtoArc does just that. On the surface, it looks like a normal lightweight and portable mouse. It has all your normal functions, like connecting to 3 different devices, a scroll wheel, an extra shortcut button, and charging via USB-C. But the mouse actually houses a mini USB-C hub! If you look at the rear of the mouse, you can actually pull out a 3 in 1 USB-C hub, which is perfect for those on-the-go situations. It has:

• HDMI 2.0 port
• USB-A 3.0 port (up to 5GBps)
• USB-C power passthrough port with 60W support

Of course there are USB-C hubs out there with many more ports and with faster data and power speeds, but for something small compact that is just part of another product, I love this thing. Not only that but it’s only $50 (sometimes on sale for $40). This has been one of my favorite recommendations for anyone looking for a portable mouse.

5 in 1 Magic Power Bank

In the same light as the ProtoArc mouse, I wanted to find a charger that did more than just plug into a wall and charge my iPad. Raycon, yes, the headphone company recently released a slew of power-related products, and they are actually great! I recommend checking them out but we are going to focus on their 5 in 1 charger.

So, how is this a 5 in 1 charger? Firstly, it looks and acts as a typical wall charger. It connects to any AC outlet and has a USB-C and USB-A port that outputs 20W. Charges of this size typically can charge at higher wattage, but since this is only for an iPad, the 20W is more than enough, especially considering everything else. Not only does it charge your plugged-in devices, but it also houses a 10,000mAh battery that is constantly charging itself when it’s plugged into the wall. It doesn’t stop there; then it has two short built-in cables, a USB-C cable, and a lightning cable to charge your devices on the go. It also has a Magsafe puck on its side that supports up to 15W of charging. Then the last two things to mention are that it has a small kickstand for your phone and an LED screen that gives you the battery percentage of the power bank.

This is the perfect travel charger for iPads and iPhones. My only gripe is the output. It only charges at 20W, so I wouldn’t consider this a solution for a MacBook.

Once known as Leningrad and before that Petrograd, Saint Petersburg, Russia, is the country’s second-largest city. Set next to the Neva River, close to the Baltic Sea, this city is home to over 5 million people.

It’s the world’s northernmost city, founded by Peter the Great and named after Saint Peter the apostle. Once home to the Tsars of Russia, it is today known as the country’s cultural capital.

With iconic sights such as Hermitage Museum, Nevsky Prospect, Peterhof Palace, and so much more, it has a fascinating heritage ripe for exploration. Without further ado, let’s dive into the 13 best things to do in St. Petersburg.

St. Petersburg, Europe, has grown into one of the top tourist destinations on the continent. Although it might get very cold in winter, there are still plenty of things to do – and the summers are absolutely perfect! Saint Petersburg is one of the prettiest cities in all of Europe .

1. Visit The World Famous Hermitage Museum

One of the city’s most popular attractions (with over 3 million items in its esteemed collection), State Hermitage Museum showcases everything from fine art to ancient artifacts. 

Even if you don’t plan on entering inside, the exterior is an architectural gem in itself. The columns are all in white with green/gold facades that can be viewed from the river or Palace Square.

If you’re visiting St. Petersburg, Russia, your trip would not be complete without stopping past this world-famous landmark. It’s also a great activity to do no matter what time of year you are visiting – and a perfect way to escape those cold Russian winter days. 

There are six buildings in the museum complex in total. Five of which – Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage, and Hermitage Theatre – can be accessed by the public.

Within, you’ll be treated to Egyptian collections, artifacts dating from ancient Mesopotamia, and classical Greek jewelry, pottery, and sculptures. This is any historical culture lover’s dream. 

Keep exploring, and you will find collections of prehistoric relics from the Palaeolithic era to the Iron Ages, European fine arts, Impressionist works, Catherine the Great’s personal collections, and so much more.

2. Take in a Performance at Mariinsky Theatre

The Neoclassical Mariinsky Theatre is home to Russia’s revered opera and ballet companies.

The theatre – named after the wife of Tsar Alexandra II, Empress Maria Alexandrovna – has been here since 1860 when it was known as the Kirov Theatre.

This magnificent building, since it opened, has hosted stage performances and premieres from Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky and famous ballets such as Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. 

Today, in addition to hosting live performances, the theatre has its own record label, which focuses on releasing music by Russian composers Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninov.

If you enjoy the arts and are going to be in St. Petersburg for several days, book tickets to see a world-class performance – you won’t be disappointed.

3. See Jewelled Eggs at the Faberge Museum

The House of Faberge was founded in St. Petersburg in 1842 by Gustav Faberge. Originally a jeweler, he became famous for designing jewel-encrusted eggs for the Tsars of Russia and is arguably the most famous goldsmith of the modern era. 

Today, you can view these iconic collection pieces in the Faberge Museum. It showcases 4,000 items in total, including Faberge Easter eggs, jewelry, silverware, home decor, and fantasy-themed objects.

The incredible jeweled eggs are famous all over the world, and there are several museums dedicated to them. But if you want to learn about Gustav Faberge, his family, and how it all began, this is the museum to visit. You can purchase a ticket in person or online. 

4. Spend an Hour Canal Cruising

St. Petersburg is built on 42 islands, and once upon a time (before bridges were constructed), cruising was the only way to navigate the city.

On a Golden Ring boat tour, you’ll see some of St. Petersburg’s iconic sights along the Kryukov Canal, including St. Nicholas Cathedral, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, and the Mariinsky theatre.

You’ll dip beneath the famous colored bridges on Neva River whilst enjoying views of Peter and Paul Fortress, Vasilyevsky Island, and the Summer Garden. This is truly one of the most breathtaking ways to take in all the beauty that St. Petersburg has to offer. 

This tour also only takes around an hour, so you’ll have plenty of time to revisit your favorite spots throughout the day!

5. Discover Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

One of St. Petersburg’s architectural masterpieces is the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood.

This former Russian Orthodox Church was completed in 1907 and is built in Baroque, Neoclassical, and Russian Revival design. It is one of the city’s main attractions, with ornate domes, intricate frescoes, and 7,500 square meters of mosaics inside. 

If you don’t wish to enter, you can gain incredible views from Griboedov Canal. But if you do venture inside, you’ll be rewarded with interior frescoes and mosaic works depicting biblical scenes and figures created by celebrated Russian artists of the time.

The Church of the Saviour of Blood is built on the spot where Emperor Alexander 2 was assassinated in 1881 – hence the name. So, not only will you be able to appreciate the fine architectural designs, but also explore an important part of Russian history. 

6. Take a Rooftop Walk-in St. Petersburg

If you have viewed the city from canals and rivers, try it from the rooftops! You can take a guided rooftop walk in the city, seeing streets and skylines from an elevated perspective.

One particular tour to highlight is the Official Rooftops Excursion of St. Petersburg. Just a few minutes from Nevsky Prospect, these sites offer vistas of Fontanka River and Trinity Cathedral – and that’s just the first roof.

The second roof boasts views of St. Petersburg’s old center, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Kazan Cathedral, and the Church on Spilled Blood.

This is a truly incredible way to see the city in all its glory, plus the tour provides you with binoculars so you can see everything in great detail.

7. Admire Nevsky Prospect’s Magnificent Architecture

The main street of St. Petersburg is Nevsky Prospect. Begin at the intersection at Stroganov Palace before venturing to Kazan Cathedral. While you walk, take in the monuments dedicated to Catherine the Great and browse goods at The Passage – Nevsky Avenue’s premier department store.

This store was quite the trailblazer. It opened its doors in the late 1840s and was one of the first buildings in Russia to use gas for lighting. Then, in 1900, an electric station was installed on an underground floor.

Once you’ve finished shopping and enjoyed a fresh cup of coffee, continue to the Russian National Library – the oldest public library in Russia – and Alexandrinsky Theatre (which was built for the Imperial troupe of Petersburg).

8. Visit the Island of Peter and Paul Fortress

Set on an island connected by bridges, Peter and Paul Fortress is instantly recognizable from its needle spire, which dominates the skyline. The fortress was originally built to defend the maritime city from Swedish invaders.

However, Peter the Great defeated the opposition before it was even completed! It has since served as a military center and prison for political dissenters and, latterly, as a museum.

Inside the vast complex, you can see Peter and Paul Cathedral, visit the resting place of the Romanovs, and watch military processions or the firing of the noon-day gun.

It’s a great day trip for anyone interested in Russian, maritime or military history. There are also plenty of group walking tours available. 

9. Sample Russian Vodka in a Ryumochnye

A visit to Russia wouldn’t be complete without sampling the local drink – vodka, and the best place to do this is in a Ryumochnye. This is a specific style of 19th-century Russian drinking house that not only offers some of Russia’s best vodka but also a short history lesson.

You could call it a bar, but it’s more than that – most mainstream Ryumochnye have a definite Soviet vibe and are places for working men to kick back and enjoy vodka with their buddies.

Beverages come in bottles or shot form, and some places offer self-service and snacks.

If that sounds too hardcore for your taste, there are updated versions of Ryumochnye in the city, like Mayak in St. Petersburg, where you can gain a similar experience. 

10. Enjoy local Saint Petersburg Craft Beer

Although most people think of vodka when visiting Russia, you can also enjoy some of the best craft beer in Saint Petersburg . Russia’s second-largest city has an exciting, rapidly growing craft beer scene, in part due to its history and geography.

Historically, the Russian empire was influenced by Northern Europe, and the Dutch & English beer-drinking culture eventually made its way here. Today, Saint Petersburg is home to a growing number of modern microbreweries, cool taprooms, and stylish bars.

Saint Petersburg is also home to Stepan Razin Brewery, the oldest brewery in Russia (now, of course, owned by Heiniken). It opened in 1795, but today the building is known as the Saint Petersburg Beer Museum, showcasing the history of beer in Russia and the Soviet Union.

Russia’s largest and most popular brewery, Baltika, is also located in Saint Petersburg, and it’s possible to take a tour of their huge brewery.

11. See the Majestic Catherine Palace

A stately palace of blue and gold, Catherine’s Palace is located 26 kilometers south of St. Petersburg. Named after the wife of Peter the Great, this place was originally a two-story modest building commissioned in 1717.

The exterior, which stretches for one kilometer in circumference, is surrounded by woodlands, lawns, gilded balconies, and reliefs. However, the interiors are even more impressive.

With great halls, a white dining room, an amber room, and more. It’s the perfect place to step back into history and discover what life was like as a Russian aristocracy.

12. Explore Peterhof Palace

If you’re going to visit Catherine Palace, you should tour Peterhof too. It’s a 40-minute drive away, but you can even take a hydrofoil speed boat from right behind the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg center.

Sitting close to the Baltic Sea, Peterhof Palace was constructed by Peter the Great to be Russia’s version of Versailles. The opulent residence surrounded by sculptures, fountains, and tiered staircases leading to the grand entrance evokes mystery and the history of a bygone era.

Inside it is lavishly decorated with dazzling chandeliers, one-of-a-kind artworks and beautiful ceiling frescoes.

On a guided tour, you can learn more about the palace’s history. Discover the Throne Room, Portrait Hall and Peter the Great’s Oak Study. You’ll see dining rooms set for dinner, grand ballrooms where dancing and gatherings would take place, and décor which defies time.

The palace offers great insight into his life and legacy, and if you are interested in history, art and interior design, you’ll love it.

13. Spend a Day by the Finnish Border at Vyborg

Just over an hour from central Saint Petersburg by train is the city of Vyborg. It sits on the Gulf of Finland and was first settled back in the 12th century. The city has been occupied by Finnish and German forces and suffered extensive damage during the Second World War. However, it has since been rebuilt. 

It’s a charming center to wander around, with narrow cobbled streets, a medieval castle, and Finnish art nouveau structures sprinkled throughout. An easy day trip from St. Petersburg, it can also serve as a stop-off point if you’re crossing into Finland to continue your adventure.

Baltic Sea Cruises also operate to St. Petersburg as part of a larger itinerary, and St. Peter Line Ferry sails from Helsinki in Finland and Tallinn in Estonia.

Which hostel did you stay at? I am potentially thinking of going to Russia for World Cup 2018 after my World Cup trip to Brazil two years ago. Saint Petersburg is one of the host cities, and so I am very interested in learning more about this city and recommendations from fellow travellers who have been.

These migrants arrive with complex asylum claims and, because of bureaucratic and diplomatic obstacles, are among the most difficult to deport when they don’t qualify for protection. Many are released into the United States with a pending court date that may be years away .

Some migrants say they could be killed if sent home. Many risked their lives crossing oceans or jungles to reach the border in search of a better life. The legal basis for an asylum claim is a flight from persecution, not a yearning for American prosperity.

Immigration judges are churning out decisions at a record clip. Still, decisions about sensitive cases involving violence and persecution tend to take years. That means many of the new immigrants are living in a state of long-term limbo, even as they become more enmeshed in the fabric of American life.

Economists say the migrants have helped America’s post-covid economy to be one of the strongest in the world. But the United States remains tangled in a bitter debate over the costs and benefits of these new arrivals, which has been amplified by this year’s presidential campaign .

Biden tightened border restrictions to curb asylum claims after former president and presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump rallied Republicans to defeat a bipartisan bill that would have expanded immigration enforcement . Trump blames Biden for inviting mass migration, and he is pledging to close the border and deploy U.S. troops to carry out deportations if he’s elected in November.

Where people have settled

Unlike the immigrants of the late 1800s and early 1900s who arrived at Ellis Island on transatlantic steam ships, the journey today often unfolds in two phases. One is the physical challenge of reaching U.S. territory. A second, longer odyssey follows in the U.S. immigration court system, which must sort out who is allowed to stay.

The Post’s analysis of U.S. immigration court data shows that about 3 million migrants who have arrived since 2014 have active cases. More than three in five have entered the United States since 2021, the year Biden took office.

Their legal status in America remains unresolved, but they are already building lives: many are taking low-wage jobs, sending children to school and relocating to communities across the United States that have not been traditional immigrant destinations.

Court filings show the newest immigrants are settling across rural and urban America. They and other arrivals have pushed the share of the U.S. population that is foreign-born to nearly 14 percent, the highest in more than a century. New immigrant hubs have formed around jobs in meatpacking , agriculture and petroleum.

Some of the biggest growth areas are in Florida and Texas, where the immigrant population continues to expand thanks to plentiful jobs and cheaper housing — and despite immigration crackdowns by Republican Govs. Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott .

The growth is uneven. West Virginia , Wyoming and North Dakota — states with severe labor shortages — attracted hardly any of the newcomers, while New York, Chicago and Denver have received thousands as Abbott has bused more from the border to those cities. California, a traditional destination, is also home to large numbers of new arrivals.

Venezuelans became a top group entering the United States for the first time under the Biden administration, a surge that has demonstrated how rapidly migration can change. New enclaves of Venezuelan migrants have formed in places such as Salt Lake City, Denver and Dallas. If Maduro extends his rule during next month’s election, he could trigger another mass exodus.

Migration from El Salvador has fallen in recent years under President Nayib Bukele , who has generated both accolades and criticism for an iron-fisted anti-gang campaign. El Salvador has gone from one of Latin America’s most dangerous countries to one of its safest, and far fewer Salvadorans are leaving.

Cuban migration to the United States has been at record levels due to the country’s tanking economy and long-standing U.S. penalties that tightened under Trump. Cubans enjoy special privileges under U.S. law, and roughly five percent of the island’s population has crossed into the United States since 2021. Louisville, Las Vegas and Houston are new destinations for Cubans, court filings show.

Turmoil in Haiti has sent more people fleeing — and made U.S. deportations to Haiti more controversial. Many of the Haitians who have surged to the United States have arrived from Chile or other South American nations where they found refuge after Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake. They risk deportation to a place they left years ago. Haitian communities in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Florida have expanded in recent years, the data show.

Immigration court cases have jumped for other Latin American nations, including Colombians, Brazilians, Peruvians and Ecuadorians , the latter fleeing new waves of drug-fueled gang violence . Those groups are concentrating in New York, Florida and the Midwest.

During the past two years, U.S. border authorities have apprehended more migrants from Africa and Asia than ever before. Guided by smuggling organizations, these groups often arrive to South America then head north to follow the dangerous Darién Gap jungle route between Colombia and Panama, eventually reaching the U.S.-Mexico border.

About 50,000 Chinese migrants have crossed into the United States along the Mexico border since 2023. Court data show many of the most recent migrants are settling in Queens or Los Angeles’s Monterey Park area. Migrants from India are streaming to California. Russians, many of whom say they’re fleeing the war on Ukraine and forced conscription, are going to New York, Sacramento and Los Angeles.

About this story

The Washington Post used immigration court case data through May 2024 released by the Justice Department. Reporters limited their analysis to cases with entry dates since the start of 2014, omitting all cases missing entry dates. Although migrants may have multiple cases of entry over the decade, each person is only counted once. And although the overall analysis figures include detainees currently in government custody, the maps of where migrants have settled do not.

The data does not specify how every migrant entered the United States, but an analysis of charges and reporting on the topic revealed that most migrants entered through the southern border of the United States.

The Justice Department agency that runs the immigration courts, the Executive Office for Immigration Review, started releasing the data monthly to the public after receiving requests from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University, which publishes the information.

This Florida county reports latest case of dengue fever. Here's what to know

A case of dengue fever was reported in Hillsborough County, the latest report of the mosquito-borne disease in Florida this year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there have been at least six cases of locally transmitted dengue in Florida so far in 2024.

Another 172 cases in Florida were travel related.

While most dengue cases reported in the 49 continental US states occur in travelers who visited areas with risk of dengue , limited local spread of dengue has been reported in Florida, Hawaii, Texas, Arizona, and California, the CDC said.

The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County announced Monday, June 24, it had a confirmed human case of locally acquired dengue fever.

DOH-Hillsborough and Hillsborough County Mosquito Control are coordinating surveillance and prevention efforts by conducting aerial spraying.

Miami-Dade reports 6 cases of dengue

There have been six reported locally acquired cases in Miami-Dade County so far in 2024, according to the Florida Department of Health.

In comparison, in 2023, there were 173 locally acquired dengue cases in Miami-Dade County. 

What is dengue?

Dengue is a viral disease caused by any of the four related viruses: dengue virus 1, 2, 3, and 4, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

People are infected through the bite of certain species of mosquitoes, primarily  Aedes aegypti , but also  Aedes albopictus , both of which are present in Florida , according to the Florida Department of Health.

What are the symptoms of dengue?

The most common dengue symptoms are fever with:

• Aches and pains (eye pain, typically behind the eyes, muscle, joint, or bone pain)
• Nausea, vomiting

Mild symptoms of dengue can be confused with other illnesses that cause fever, the CDC said.

Symptoms of dengue typically last two to seven days.

Most people will recover after about a week.

When to seek emergency help

Severe dengue is a medical emergency , the CDC said. Warning signs usually begin in the 24 to 48 hours after your fever has gone away.

"About 1 in 20 people who get sick with dengue will develop severe dengue. Severe dengue can result in shock, internal bleeding, and death." A blood test is the only way to confirm the diagnosis.

Go to a local clinic or emergency room if you have any of the following symptoms:

• Belly pain or tenderness
• Vomiting (at least three times in 24 hours)
• Bleeding from the nose or gums
• Vomiting blood, or blood in the stool
• Feeling extremely tired or restless

If you think you have dengue, here's what you should do

• See a healthcare provider if you develop a fever or have symptoms of dengue. Tell him or her about any recent travel.
• Rest as much as possible.
• Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, the CDC said.
• Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Drink water or drinks with added electrolytes.
• For mild symptoms, care for a sick infant, child, or family member at home.

Florida history and dengue

"Until 2009, there were no reports of dengue acquired in Florida since 1934," according to the Florida Department of Health.

"In 2009-2010, an outbreak of dengue was identified in Key West. A total 22 persons were identified with dengue fever in Key West during the summer and fall of 2009. In 2010, 66 cases of locally acquired dengue associated with Key West were reported in Florida with onset dates between March and November 2010.

"There was also a  Martin County outbreak  in 2013. In 2020, dengue transmission was detected in Key Largo."

Other mosquito-borne illnesses seen in Florida

Dengue is only one of several mosquito-borne illnesses that have been seen in Florida over the years.

Among the diseases are:

• West Nile virus
• Eastern equine encephalitis
• St. Louis encephalitis
• Chikungunya

Take precautions to reduce number of mosquitoes

The Florida Department of Health suggested the following tips to help prevent mosquitoes from hatching:

Drain water from outside areas to reduce the number of places mosquitoes can lay their eggs and breed, including:

• Drain water from garbage cans, house gutters, buckets, pool covers, coolers, toys, flowerpots or any other containers where sprinkler or rainwater has collected.
• Discard old tires, bottles, pots, broken appliances and other items not being used.
• Empty and clean birdbaths and pets’ water bowls at least twice a week.
• Protect boats and vehicles from rain with tarps that do not accumulate water.
• Maintain swimming pools in good condition and chlorinated. Empty plastic swimming pools when not in use.

What type of repellent keeps mosquitoes away? How do you keep them outside?

Use protective clothing while outdoors and keep doors and windows closed to prevent mosquitoes from going indoors.

• Wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves while outside when and where mosquitoes are most prevalent to discourage mosquitoes from biting.
• Apply insect repellent that contains DEET (10-30%), picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, 2-undecanone or IR3535.
• Treat clothing and gear with products containing 0.5%. Do not apply permethrin directly to skin. Some sports clothing and gear come pretreated with permethrin.
• Use mosquito netting to protect children younger than 2 months old.
• Check and repair screens on doors and windows. Keep them closed and use air conditioning when possible.
• Make sure window screens are in good repair to reduce the chance of mosquitoes indoors.

Parents who claim Panera’s charged lemonade caused daughter’s death call for change

PHILADELPHIA (KYW) - The parents of a college student who died in 2022 are suing Panera Bread, claiming there was no consumer warning about the amount of stimulants in the restaurant chain’s charged lemonade.

Sarah Katz, a college student at the University of Pennsylvania, suddenly died nearly two years ago. Her parents are suing Panera, saying their daughter, who had a heart condition called long QT syndrome, drank the chain’s charged lemonade before her death.

The college student collapsed at a restaurant in September 2022 after suffering cardiac arrest. She was taken to the hospital, but the staff there was unable to save her.

“It’s a very hard pain to describe because it’s a pain in your heart,” said Jill Katz, Sarah’s mother, of her daughter’s death.

Sarah Katz’s parents say she never would have had the charged lemonade if she had known what was in it. She avoided energy drinks on doctors’ advice because of her heart condition, which disrupts the heart’s electrical activity.

One large charged lemonade has more caffeine and sugar than a similarly sized combination of a Red Bull and a Monster Energy drink, according to the Katzes’ lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims there was no consumer warning about the amount of stimulants in the charged lemonade, it was not advertised as an energy drink and it was offered side-by-side with all of Panera’s non-caffeinated and less caffeinated drinks.

The Katzes say they are sharing their daughter’s story to make others aware of products that might not have warning labels about ingredients. They also want charged lemonade removed from Panera’s menu. It was reported in May that the product was being phased out.

“The bigger picture is the ultimate regulation of energy drinks,” Jill Katz said. “Bring transparency to consumers, the public, so people have choices. People can make an educated choice on what’s right for them.”

Panera has denied any responsibility for Sarah Katz’s death.

After her parents’ lawsuit was filed in 2023, Panera issued a statement saying, “We were very saddened to learn this morning about the tragic passing of Sarah Katz, and our hearts go out to her family. At Panera, we strongly believe in transparency around our ingredients. We will work quickly to thoroughly investigate this matter.”

The trial in the case is scheduled for September in Philadelphia. The Katzes’ attorney is representing three other families also suing Panera over its charged lemonade.

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump’s lawyers have asked the New York judge who presided over his hush money trial to set aside his conviction and delay his sentencing, scheduled for next week.

The letter to Judge Juan M. Merchan cited the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling earlier Monday on presidential immunity and asked the judge to delay Trump’s sentencing while he weighs the high court’s decision and how it could influence the New York case, according to the letter obtained by The Associated Press.

The lawyers argue that the Supreme Court’s decision confirmed a position the defense raised earlier in the case that prosecutors should have been precluded from introducing some evidence they said constituted official presidential acts, according to the letter.

In prior court filings, Trump contended he is immune from prosecution for conduct alleged to involve official acts during his tenure in office. His lawyers did not raise that as a defense in the hush money case, but they argued that some evidence — including Trump’s social media posts about former lawyer Michael Cohen — comes from his time as president and should have been excluded from the trial because of immunity protections.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office declined to comment Monday night.

The Supreme Court on Monday ruled for the first time that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution, extending the delay in the Washington criminal case against the Republican ex-president on charges he plotted to overturn his 2020 election loss .

Trump was convicted in New York of 34 counts of falsifying business records, arising from what prosecutors said was an attempt to cover up a hush money payment to a porn actor just before the 2016 presidential election. He is scheduled to be sentenced in the hush money case on July 11.

Merchan instituted a policy in the run-up to the trial requiring both sides to send him a one-page letter summarizing their arguments before making longer court filings. He said he did that to better manage the docket, so he was not inundated with voluminous paperwork.

In denying Trump’s bid to move the trial from New York state court to federal court last year, a federal judge found that the allegations at the center of the case pertained to Trump’s personal life and do not “reflect in any way the color of the President’s official duties.”

“The evidence overwhelmingly suggests that the matter was a purely a personal item of the President — a cover-up of an embarrassing event,” U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein wrote in the ruling.

Sir Keir Starmer has spent much of today batting away Tory attacks about how he spends his Friday evenings with his family - but the Labour leader couldn't resist giving his thoughts on one of the tactical conundrums facing England manager Gareth Southgate at the Euros.

With the election just two days away, thoughts are starting to turn to who might be in a potential Starmer cabinet.

Some shadow cabinet members, such as shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves, are all but certain to be appointed if they win their seats and Labour win a majority on Thursday.

But rumours are swirling that David Lammy, who has been shadow foreign secretary since November 2021, may not be appointed to the top Foreign Office job.

Sir Keir Starmer was asked about those rumours by the BBC's Chris Mason, but the Labour leader refused to comment.

"I'm not naming a cabinet two days before the election, which isn't won," he said.

"We have to stay focused until 10pm on Thursday, because it will come down to quite narrow margins. The polls don't predict the future."

Certain constituencies are "very, very tight", he said, adding the party has to be "absolutely laser focused as we go into the last few days".

As Rishi Sunak said yesterday, the jobs of prime minister and England manager are similar in that just about everyone has an opinion on how you're doing it.

Sir Keir Starmer is no exception, it seems.

Speaking to the BBC, the Labour leader was asked what he made of a tactical switch made by Gareth Southgate during England's rather nervy 2-1 win over Slovakia at the Euros on Sunday.

The England boss moved Bukayo Saka, a star man for Sir Keir's Arsenal, from the right-hand side to the left to help make room for Chelsea's Cole Palmer.

Sir Keir, a keen footballer and Arsenal season ticket-holder, said seeing Saka play at left-back made him "very nervous".

"He actually did start in his early days at Arsenal playing as a left-back so you could see the logic in it," he admitted.

"But I think he's been one of the major outlets on the right."

England go up against Switzerland in the quarter-finals on Sunday.

Former DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson will face more sex offence charges when he appears in court tomorrow. 

He is now being accused of a total of 18 offences. 

He was facing 11 before. 

His wife Lady Eleanor Donaldson is to face five charges, up from four.

Donaldson, 61, resigned as DUP leader after being charged in March.

Back then, he said he'll be "strenuously contesting" all charges.

Born in County Down in the 1960s, he was raised during the Troubles and has been a vocal campaigner for unionism.

He came to the fore after the UK left the EU for his opposition to the Northern Ireland Protocol - which he believed undermined Northern Ireland's place in the United Kingdom.

Two days before the polls open and there is still a sizeable group of undecided voters on the Sky News YouGov panel.

With a last political push from the parties, the undecided votes could be critical this week.

That's because significantly more of this group backed the Conservatives in the 2019 election.

Among the former Tory voters on our panel, there is a split on who to vote for this time.

Some are switching to Labour.

"Even though Conservatives do seem like they have clear plans, their clear plans don't seem genuine anymore," said one voter.

The Conservative Party will on Wednesday unveil a letter signed by scores of small business-owners in a last-ditch bid to convince undecided voters that they can be trusted as the stewards of Britain's economy.

Sky News understands the Tories are planning to publish a letter signed by between 100 and 150 SME bosses that will argue that a Labour government would risk damaging their business.

Sources said the letter was expected to be released on Wednesday, the final day before Britain goes to the polls.

Neither the text of the letter nor the names of the signatories were clear on Tuesday.

Sir Keir Starmer has risked the wrath of the Tories by suggesting it's not just family he'll want to make time for if he becomes prime minister.

The Labour leader is a keen footballer and wants to keep it up.

"I'm determined to be able to play five-a-side," he told Times Radio.

"Whether I'll be able to play on a Sunday or not, I don't know. 

"I suspect I'll be busy."

Sir Keir has already said he wants to keep Friday evenings free for time with his wife and children. He currently clocks off work at 6pm that day.

That ambition has drawn the ire of Conservative ministers, who've suggested it's a sign he won't take the job of PM seriously.

Sir Keir acknowledged he likely won't be able to play football "as regularly" should he end up in Number 10 on Friday.

But he said he was similarly determined to keep going to The Arsenal with his son and friends.

Sir Keir, like his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn, is a big Gunners fan.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was asked earlier about a Reform UK candidate's decision to suspend her campaign and back the Tories over concerns that many of the other candidates standing are bigoted. 

"A vote for Reform is just a vote to put Keir Starmer in Number 10," he said, reacting to the news. 

He was pressed on whether he agrees with Georgie David, who was the Reform candidate for West Ham and Beckton, in saying the "vast majority of [Reform] candidates are indeed racist, misogynistic and bigoted".

The prime minister said he'd already addressed the "appalling comments" made by Reform campaigners last week, adding that "speaks to the culture" in Nigel Farage's party.

Mr Sunak also said the postal vote delay situation needs resolving quickly as every vote counts. 

Royal Mail has blamed the government for voters not receiving their postal ballots ahead of Thursday's election - and said there is "no backlog" in its system.

Second breakfasts are exciting enough, but imagine being able to have three  breakfasts.

Rishi Sunak lived the dream of every hobbit from The Lord Of The Rings this morning by doing just that, saying it helped him feel "energised" at this late stage of the election campaign.

"How often do you get to have three breakfasts before 10am?" he told reporters accompanying him in Beaconsfield.

"That's only good news."

One of them was a McDonald's breakfast wrap.

He previously revealed it was his favourite item on its menu, though it had been discontinued when he said it.

The sausage, egg, bacon, potato, and cheese concoction returned from a four-year hiatus earlier this year.

"I love a comeback," the PM said as he tucked into one on the Tory campaign battle bus this morning.

Presumably his other breakfasts were a Twix and some Haribo.

Whether he enjoys a comeback in the polls is another matter.

Lord Mann, a Labour peer who was appointed antisemitism adviser by Theresa May, has warned it is "so dangerous" for Sir Keir Starmer's "right to family time" to be questioned.

He said: "The attack on Keir Starmer for asserting his right to family time on a Friday night, as he has done for many, many years, is so dangerous.

"So insidious from those aware of why he chooses to be with his family specifically on Friday evenings."

He pointed out that Friday nights had a wider cultural significance within the Jewish community, likening it to Sundays in Christian communities.

“There’s a reason parliament does not sit on Sundays,” he said.

Sir Keir's wife Victoria is of Jewish heritage.
