Voyager Craft Coffee Heads in New Directions in Silicon Valley

It was fitting that Voyager Craft Coffee would start off as a mobile coffee bar in 2015.

With its creative menu and multiroaster format, the company’s voyage continued less than two years later with the dropping of an anchor at its first brick-and-mortar shop in Santa Clara, California. In February of this year, another new frontier opened wide upon the launch of Voyager’s 1,250-square-foot roasting facility in Palo Alto.

Finally, just last week, a second retail outlet extended the brand’s adventure into neighboring San Jose, at the San Pedro Square Market .

Voyager Craft Coffee Owners Lauren Burns and Sameer Shah promised themselves, their workers and their customers from the start that a roasting program would someday arrive. Burns told Daily Coffee News that they’re not only elated for having fulfilled that promise, but also for the stride forward in control over the quality of their products and intimacy with their supply chain.

“For so many reasons, this was intensely meaningful to us,” Burns told DCN.

Samples are roasted on an Ikawa sample roaster , a San Franciscan 3-kilo roaster facilitates small batches of particularly precious coffees, and a 15-kilo Giesen roaster handles larger production roasts. A Decent Espresso machine helps the team experiment with extractions in the quality control and cupping lab. Said Burns, “We have some cool toys in there.”

Cool toys are also brightening the company’s new coffee bar in San Jose, including a mint green powder coated Synesso Hydra 3-group espresso machine that plays well with Mahlkönig and Mazzer grinders.

These set the stage for such exotic voyage-inspired concoctions as the Valencia, which combines coffee with coconut milk, vanilla and evaporated orange blossom water. The Bali is espresso mixed with coconut milk, honey and the twang of cayenne pepper, and the Shanghai blends almost-over-extracted jasmine tea with a double shot of espresso, rounded with a smidge of honey and a swirl of something milky.

“When staff members go on vacation, we always ask them what the culinary highlights were and if any particular food item or ingredient made an impression on them,” said Burns. “We then experiment with those ingredients and see how it works. Our goal is to make unique, impactful drinks that, for the most part, have never been done before.”

According to Burns, the new shop offers an “absolutely huge” shared seating area within the San Pedro Market, compared to Voyager’s 1,200-square-foot Santa Clara shop where, despite a recent remodel, seats are still typically filled by 10 a.m. To offer Market customers a break from the otherwise industrial feel of the place, Burns said Voyager’s retail design aimed for cheeriness and color.

“We wanted to make the space bright and lively,” said Burns. “Amid this darker backdrop, we elected to accent our space with a vibrant, almost life-giving green.”

Burns said a third Voyager cafe is in the works for later this year at a Santa Clara location, although they are not yet disclosing the exact spot. With its retail enterprise growing, the Giesen is being reined in for house use.

“We are actually declining wholesale clients right now because of the complexity involved in standing up both a roastery and two stores within a six-month span,” said Burns. “Once we stabilize, we’ll aim for dead center to get it going right.”

Voyager Craft Coffee’s new location in the San Pedro Square Market is open now at 87 N. San Pedro St. in San Jose.

I was at San Pedro Square Market and went to Voyager Craft Coffee. I had a cup of Jasmine Green Tea. They also have coffee drinks and pastries and snacks. What I like the best is the pleasant surroundings. I enjoyed sitting on a comfortable... sofa listening to the music, Many others were there too; some working on their lap tops. Others were reading or talking with friends, It is a very nice place, There are historic photos also of some San Jose dignitaries o the walls. I will be back. More

Voyager Craft Coffee Adds Fourth California Location

Longtime collaborator Studio BANAA crafts the café’s travel-inspired interior design

Words by: Stephanie Chen • Photos by Mikiko Kikuyama

voyager craft coffee cupertino california

Voyager Craft Coffee has launched its fourth location in California—this time in Cupertino within Silicon Valley. Born as a coffee cart startup by globe-trotting entrepreneurs, Voyager has evolved from its original Santa Clara store to become a thriving brand in the Bay Area.

The vibrant new space, designed in collaboration with San Francisco-based Studio BANAA , is centered on the concept of “coffee inspired by our travels.” Dubbed the Coop, the outpost transforms an abandoned coffee house into a whimsical gateway into Voyager’s world.

“We built this out amid the pandemic when most coffee shops were downsizing and embracing spaces with ‘takeaway friendly’ square footage,” says Sameer Shah, owner of Voyager Craft Coffee. “We wanted to buck that trend in a big way since we believe strongly in the power of, and need for, community spaces where our neighbors can meet and feel welcome.”

Hierarchical archways connect the deep blue exterior façade to the interior, inviting guests on a visual journey through the company’s passion for coffee and global exploration. Inside, the color palette is dominated by pinks and blues.

An extensive remodel added a window-side seating nook overlooking the outdoor patio and peeled back a drop ceiling to reveal wooden trusses that add height and historic charm. A central divider serves as a waiting line with a merchandise display on one side and communal seating on the other, while a wave-like concrete bench unifies the space.

Craftsmanship takes centerstage with light fixtures handwoven in Greece, along with an eclectic mural by Voyager’s barista and artist, Julian de la Cruz. Custom fixed benches frame a communal concrete table, poured and cast in place by a local concrete fabricator.

De ANza Alumni Serves Community...Coffee!

For Voyager Craft Coffee, everything starts with community.

Voyager was founded in 2016 by Sameer Shah, a De Anza College   alumnus, and his wife Lauren Burns. It began with the hope of bringing a passion for travel and coffee to Santa Clara County.

“Back then we didn't know what we were doing. We had a good team and good support though, even at that point, from our community,” Sameer said.

Standing under the arches in the new Cupertino location, he happily realized that his design mimics the arches at De Anza and reflected on the impact De Anza had on his life “it was the best instruction I ever experienced.”

The team is excited about the success of their newest location, just down the street from De Anza College on Steven’s Creek Boulevard which opened in June of 2022. Sameer still can’t believe how busy the store is saying, “we really have the community to thank for that.”

After graduating from De Anza, Sameer transferred to USC. He continues to give back to De Anza through Voyager by employing students and providing a welcoming space for students to study or meet for group projects.

Sameer and Lauren are now about to open their fifth location, a warehouse where they will have a centralized roasting and baking facility, with an additional small café.

“We always knew we wanted to roast our own coffee. Once we figured out the basics of running our shops, we wanted to learn more about the whole roasting process and start to build some relationships at the farm level and make things a little more equitable for the farmers and co-ops where the coffee came from,” said Sameer.

Although Voyager has been roasting and selling coffee since its second year in operation, this new warehouse will expand opportunities for current staff to learn new skills.

“I think that's going to be good for our team. Many of them are interested in expanding their skill set, getting into roasting, or getting into baking, and the new space will let them do that. We’re just really excited for it,” said Sameer.

When asked what he was most proud of, Sameer said, “maintaining a good team culture. Building something that people are happy and proud to be part of.”

A quote from their website sums up the Voyager mission and highlights the value they bring to Santa Clara County. “We've grown a lot over the years, but who we are at our core hasn't changed one bit. We wake up every day with the goal of spreading as much love and kindness within our community as possible.”
