Introduction: Mobile Internet Providers In Vanuatu – Vodafone And Digicel

When traveling to Vanuatu, it is essential to have a reliable and affordable way to stay connected. Vodafone and Digicel are the two main mobile internet providers in Vanuatu, offering prepaid SIM cards to both locals and visitors.

These SIM cards provide access to voice calls, SMS, and mobile data services, allowing you to easily communicate and access the internet while exploring the beautiful islands of Vanuatu.

Advantages Of Buying A Local Prepaid Sim Card

Purchasing a local prepaid SIM card is highly recommended for anyone visiting Vanuatu. Here are some of the advantages of opting for a prepaid SIM card:

  • Cost: Buying a local prepaid SIM card is the cheapest way to stay connected in Vanuatu. The rates for voice calls, SMS, and data are much more affordable compared to using roaming services or relying solely on Wi-Fi.
  • Flexibility: With a prepaid SIM card, you have the flexibility to choose the amount of data, voice minutes, and SMS that best suit your needs. You can easily top up your balance as needed with prepaid credit, ensuring you have connectivity throughout your stay.
  • Local phone number: By purchasing a local SIM card, you will be assigned a local Vanuatu phone number. This makes it easier for locals and other travelers to contact you during your stay.

Unreliable Wifi In Vanuatu

While Vanuatu has made great strides in improving its telecommunication infrastructure, the Wi-Fi connection can still be unreliable, even in popular resorts. To ensure seamless connectivity, it is best to have a local SIM card that allows you to access mobile data.

This way, you can stay connected regardless of your location on the islands.

Disadvantages Of Roaming Plans

Roaming plans may seem convenient, as they allow you to use your home network provider’s services while abroad. However, there are a few disadvantages to consider when it comes to roaming in Vanuatu:

  • Cost: Roaming plans are often more expensive compared to buying a local prepaid SIM card. The rates for voice calls, SMS, and data can be significantly higher, resulting in expensive phone bills.
  • Internet speed limitations: Many roaming plans impose speed limitations on internet usage. This means you may experience slower connection speeds, hindering your ability to browse the web, stream content, or use data-intensive apps.

It is highly recommended to avoid roaming plans in Vanuatu and opt for a local prepaid SIM card instead.

Convenient Purchase Locations At The International Airport

Upon arrival at the international airport in Port Vila, you will find both Vodafone and Digicel shops where you can easily purchase a SIM card. This provides a convenient option for travelers as soon as they land in Vanuatu.

The staff at these shops are knowledgeable and can assist you in selecting the best SIM card option for your needs.

Vodafone’s Free Sim Card Offer

Vodafone offers a tempting incentive for travelers with their free SIM card offer. With the purchase of a Vodafone SIM card, you will receive 2 GB of data that is valid for three days.

This allows you to have immediate internet access upon arrival, making it easier to navigate and communicate in Vanuatu.

Digicel’s Prepaid Sim Card Deals

Digicel, the other major mobile internet provider in Vanuatu, offers various prepaid SIM card deals. These deals come with different amounts of data, voice minutes, and SMS.

By selecting the right package, you can ensure that you have a sufficient amount of data and call credits to stay connected throughout your visit.

Network Signal Strengths And Availability

Vodafone is known to have a stronger 4G signal in Vanuatu compared to Digicel. This can be advantageous, especially if you plan on using data-intensive applications or require a reliable internet connection.

However, both Vodafone and Digicel have extensive coverage throughout the islands, allowing you to stay connected in most areas.

It is important to note that as of July 2023, Vanuatu does not yet have a 5G network. Therefore, you will be limited to 4G network speeds during your visit.

In conclusion, buying a local prepaid SIM card from either Vodafone or Digicel is the recommended way to stay connected in Vanuatu. The advantages of cost-effectiveness, flexibility, and reliable connectivity outweigh the disadvantages of unreliable Wi-Fi and costly roaming plans.

Take advantage of the convenient purchase locations at the international airport in Port Vila and choose the best SIM card option that suits your data and communication needs. Whether you’re enjoying the beautiful beaches of Efate or exploring the lush jungles of Espiritu Santo, having a local SIM card will ensure that you can stay connected and share your amazing experiences in Vanuatu with friends and family.

What are the advantages of buying a local prepaid SIM card in Vanuatu?

Buying a local prepaid SIM card in Vanuatu is cost-effective, flexible, and provides reliable connectivity. It offers cheaper rates for voice calls, SMS, and data compared to roaming services or Wi-Fi. You have the flexibility to choose the amount of data, voice minutes, and SMS that suit your needs, and you are assigned a local Vanuatu phone number for easier communication.

Should I choose a roaming plan or a local prepaid SIM card in Vanuatu?

It is highly recommended to opt for a local prepaid SIM card in Vanuatu. Roaming plans tend to be more expensive, with higher rates for voice calls, SMS, and data. They may also impose speed limitations on internet usage. A local prepaid SIM card offers cost-effectiveness, flexibility, and reliable connectivity.

It is also possible to purchase SIM cards from street vendors or small shops, but it is recommended to buy from official providers in order to avoid any issues with activation or service. Overall, the cost of a SIM card in Turkey is relatively affordable compared to many other countries.

Pay as you go sim deals

Pay-as-you-go SIM deals, also known as prepaid SIM deals, allow users to pay for their mobile phone service in advance, instead of paying a monthly bill. These types of plans are often used by individuals who do not want to be tied to a long-term contract, or by those who are traveling and need a temporary phone line. Pay-as-you-go SIMs can be purchased at many retailers and phone stores, and they can be used with both smartphones and basic mobile phones. Users typically purchase a set amount of minutes, texts, and data, and once that is used up, they can purchase more as needed. My recommendation

free sim card for fiji nadi airport

Traveltomtom recommends buying a Vodafone sim card at Nadi Airport. Vodafone is more expensive than Digicel, but Vodafone has much better network coverage in Fiji.

But local prepaid sim cards are not the only way to stay connected, you can also order an e-sim card for Fiji on the internet and arrive prepared. E-sim cards for Fiji start from $7.5 USD. See below for more info.

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Nadi in 2024 is an e-sim card. No need to visit a sim card store on arrival in Fiji anymore, nor need to buy a sim card at Nadi Airport. As soon as the plane lands you are already online. An e-sim instantly connects to an available network.

You can order an e-sim card for Fiji directly online, you receive a QR code, you scan it, follow the instructions and instal the e-sim card in a couple simple steps. You are all set in less than 2 minutes.

Arrival at Nadi International Airport

traveltomtom visit fiji

Although Nadi is NOT the capital of Fiji it is the most famous city and pretty much all international flights arriving in Fiji come through Nadi. The Nadi Airport is very easy going and pretty small. There is free WiFi at Nadi Airport but it wasn’t really working as fast as I hoped. But you are able to send WhatsApp messages and check your email if you are a little patient.

Last year I traveled through Nadi Airport 3 times and every time I passed through this airport I instantly got those islandlife and holiday feelings. After you disembark the plane you will be guided to passport control. In the waiting hall there was in my case always a live band playing some uplifting tunes to make people smile and welcome them to Fiji even before their passport is stamped.

Xxx- Embed TikTok video

Behind passport control you will take the escalator down to the Baggage Claim Hall. On your left hand side there are 3 luggage belts on your right hand side there is the duty free.

arriving nadi airport baggage claim hall

In the Baggage Claim Hall there are signs everywhere from Digicel and Vodafone, the two mobile internet operators in Fiji about prepaid sim cards for Fiji for tourists. After you picked up your luggage you have to go through a last customs check. All your hand luggage and checked-in luggage will be scanned.

digicel tourist sim card for fiji

After your luggage went through the scan the sliding door will lead you into the Arrival Hall. Here you will find the tourist information desk, ATM’s, taxi and tour operator services, a cafe and sim card shops.

Those traveling with drones be prepared to go to some paperwork, my best tip for bringing a drone to Nadi Airport is to have a (fake) onwards ticket for the next day. After the bag goes through the scanner they will ask you if you have a drone inside and you need to register it. If you show them your flight ticket for the next day, they will let you go immediately.

Where to buy a sim card at Nadi Airport

digicel store nadi airport

It is very easy to find the sim card shops at Nadi Airport where they sell tourist sim cards for Fiji. As soon as you pass through the sliding doors and walk into the Arrival Hall you will see a Digicel store on your right and a Vodafone store on your left. It is impossible to miss, especially since everywhere on the airport you will see advertisement about a ‘free sim card for Fiji’.

vodafone store nadi airport

Both, the Vodafone as well as the Digicel shop at Nadi Airport are open 24 hours and you can pay in USD as well as Australian, New Zealand and of course in Fiji Dollar. They also accept Visa and Mastercard.

Prices prepaid sim cards Nadi Airport

All the information below is updated in January 2024 and prices are in Fiji Dollar and as per January 2024 $1 USD = $2.22 FJD and $1 FJD = $0.45 USD.

Fiji has so called tourist sim cards for foreigners willing to buy a prepaid sim card in Fiji with a foreign passport. Therefore the prices for sim cards at Nadi Airport are the same as elsewhere in Fiji in Digicel and Vodafone stores around the island.

vodafone nadi airport prepaid tourist sim cards

Vodafone Fiji offers 6 different prepaid sim card plans for tourists at the moment. Two plans for $70 FJD and 2 plans for $100 FJD. Then they offer the following two plans for tourists:

  • 7 GB data + $10 FJD credit + 60 local & 60 international minutes for 10 days = $35 FJD - $16 USD
  • 100 GB data for 15 days = $65 FJD - $29 USD

Big data bundles as you can see and much more affordable than e-sim cards for Fiji.

digicel nadi airport prepaid tourist sim cards

Digicel is a little cheaper compared to Vodafone and they in fact offer a free sim card for Fiji with 3 GB data for 48 hours. However, max data speed is 3G on this sim card deal. It is better to go for one of the other prepaid sim card deals if you choose to buy a Digicel sim card for traveling in Fiji.

  • 30 GB data-only for 3 days = $10 FJD - $4.5 USD
  • 75 GB data-only for 7 days = $15 FJD - $6.8 USD
  • 125 GB data + 60 minutes for 30 days = $30 FJD - $13.5 USD

A simple conclusion that Digicel prepaid sim cards are much cheaper than Vodafone prepaid sim cards for tourists in Fiji.

Best sim card for tourists at Nadi Airport

It is a simple conclusion that Digicel gives you the best value for money when you are looking at the Fiji sim card prices for tourists at Nadi Airport. However, it is Vodafone that has much better network coverage around the country. So depending of the purpose of your trip you might want to consider spending a couple dollar extra and get a Vodafone prepaid sim card.

The 4G/5G network coverage in Fiji differs per mobile internet operator. However, in all the popular tourist destinations in Fiji you will find a 4G signal, regardless if you have a Vodafone or a Digicel sim card. But if you are on a road trip in Fiji or going to more off the beaten path places to see in Fiji then it is recommended to buy a Vodafone sim card.

For more info about the best 4G/5G network in Fiji check out my complete guide for buying a sim card in Fiji in 2024 .
