Hitachi Seaside Park (ЂCl, Hitachi Kaihin Kōen) is a spacious park near Mito in Ibaraki Prefecture featuring a variety of green spaces and seasonal flowers spread out across 350 hectares, as well as an amusement park and several cycling and walking trails.

The park's iconic flower is the blue nemophila, which covers Miharashi Hill in the spring and mimics the color of the sky. The flowers are usually at their peak from late April to mid May. Paths crisscross the hill providing views over the Pacific Ocean and the rest of the park. In fall, the hill is covered by green kokia bushes which slowly turn red as the weather turns cooler. These autumnal colors are usually best from early to mid October.

Although the nemophila are the most well-known of the park's flowers, assorted other flowers bloom throughout most of the year. Near the park's main entrance is a large forested area featuring the Suisen Garden where narcissus usually bloom from mid March, while across the lake tulips bloom usually around late April.

Although flowers are seasonal highlights, the park can be enjoyed year round. There are walking trails through the extensive Hitachinaka Nature Forest, while the Dune Garden showcases plants native to the coastline of Japan. Even when the rest of the park is crowded, this area often remains relatively quiet.

Hitachi Seaside Park also features a small amusement park with over 25 rides and attractions, including a 100 meter tall Ferris wheel, putter golf, a BMX course and a roller coaster among others. Most of the rides and activities require extra fees. Restaurants and rest areas are scattered throughout the park, and a BBQ area is available for picnics.

Due to the size of the park, there are two other methods of getting around besides walking. Rental bicycles are available starting from 450 yen for three hours of use, and almost eleven kilometers of cycling paths - separate from pedestrian paths - allow easy access to the different areas of the park. A small train (on tires) also travels the perimeter of the park with stops at numerous locations. The train costs 600 yen for a 1-day pass.

Getting there and around

From Mito Station , take the JR Joban Line to Katsuta Station (5 minutes, 190 yen one way, multiple trains/hour), from where the buses takes you to the park (15 minutes, 400 yen one way, every 20-30 minutes).

By highway bus from Tokyo

Infrequent, direct highway buses connect Tokyo Station with Hitachi Seaside Park. The one way ride takes about 2.5 hours, costs 2300 yen and is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass .

Hitachi Seaside Park – A Hidden Gem You Need to Visit in Ibaraki Prefecture!

Sugoii Japan

There’s that one famous image of Hitachi Seaside Park that you would have come across whilst looking into Japan – an expansive field of stunning blue nemophila flowers, almost resembling an ocean bar the various windy paths looping over the park. There are rolling hills in the distance, and the image almost seems surreal given its ethereal quality.

However, don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s made up because in fact, this park is the famous Hitachi Seaside Park of Ibaraki, and it’s one of the most popular flower parks in all of Japan.

Hitachi Seaside Park Nemophila 1

The image that we’re referring to above is the coveted image of Miharashi Hill within Hitachi Seaside Park during late April until early May, when approximately 4.5 million nemophila flowers transforms the entire park into a sea of blue petals.

However, this isn’t the only time the park puts on a show. In fact, during various times of the year, whether it be April or May or October or even smack bang in the middle of winter, the park’s beauty is not to be underestimated.

Why You Should Visit Hitachi Seaside Park!

Hitachi Seaside Park Kochia 2

For those looking for an easy and convenient day trip from Tokyo , a short trip to Ibaraki prefecture might just be what the doctor ordered. Yes, its most famous and popular attraction is the Miharashi Hill within Hitachi Seaside Park, but aside from that, the park itself also offers plenty of walking trails that you can take around the place, and even a small amusement park!

It’s like an all-in-one destination for some exciting experiences as well as winding down time. The amusement park is home to more than 25 different rides and attractions of which include a 100m tall ferris wheel, putt-putt golf, a BMX course, and a rollercoaster. There are BBQs scattered around the park for those wanting to bring their own food to a picnic, and there are also plenty of dining options there as well.

For those who want to avoid as much walking as possible, there is also a bicycle rental option, starting at 400 yen for 3-hours. They have actually built separate cycling paths to pedestrian paths so you can ride to your heart’s content without having to worry about manoeuvring your way through crowds!

Red flowers

And if you’re well and truly there just for R&R and want as minimal exercise as possible, there is the option of taking the Seaside Train which rides around on tires to ten different stop around the park, allowing you to hop on and off at various parts of the park whenever you want. If you want to ride the train the whole way, it takes just over 30-minutes to cover its entire route.

Hitachi Seaside Park Amusement Ferris Wheel

All in all, Hitachi Seaside Park is the day trip you didn’t know you needed. During the right time of the year, the millions of flowers blooming as far as the eye can see will feel as therapeutic as getting a massage for your soul, and when you’re ready, you can ride out to the amusement park for some thrilling rides before tottering over to the restaurants for a nice, relaxing meal whilst taking in the view.

Best Time to Visit Hitachi Seaside Park

As with most parks in Japan, they’re always properly maintained and looked after so visiting them during most times of the year will be an enjoyable experience. However, if you’re looking for that extra oomph and want to go when it’s most popular, then try and schedule your visits during the following:

Late March to Mid April – Narcissus

Hitachi Seaside Park Narcissus Yellow

These gorgeous yellow blooms are in actual fact not native to Japan. Rather, they were imported in the early 1990s and have slowly become acclimated to the Japanese weather conditions, and now grow more than a million blooms every spring at the Hitachi Seaside Park. Its bright yellow hue will cheer up anyone!

Venue : Narcissus Garden, Narcissus Hill

Mid April to Late April – Tulips

Tulips

This is a case where you blink and you might miss it! The tulip blooms at Hitachi Seaside Park only happen for a relatively short period of time, but when it does, it’s quite a sight to behold. Unlike most flower festivals, rather than blooming in just one colour, the tulips are planted to bloom like a rainbow across the entire park.

Everywhere you look you will see splashes of bright red and yellow and orange and purple. It’s slightly underrated as it happens during the time there the famous Japanese cherry blossoms are blooming across the entire country but nonetheless, it’s something to keep in mind.

Venue : Tamago no Mori Flower Garden

Early April to End of May – Nemophila

Hitachi Seaside Park Blue Flower Nemophila

This is the most popular time to visit Hitachi Seaside Park because of the blooming nemophilas that fill up the entirety of the park (if you haven’t already noticed from our multiple mentions above…).

During this period, expect to see hundreds of people in the crowd who pretty much want the same thing as you – an epic photo opportunity of the stunning blooms. The peak of this flower viewing period would be from late-April until mid-May.

Venue : Mirahashi Hill

If you’re keen for a complete flower-viewing experience, why not combine a trip to see the famous nemophila blooms with another attraction, the Wisteria Terrace at Ashikaga Flower Park? The team at GoVoyagin are offering a fantastic 1-day tour option where you will be taken to both venues to experience the stunning blooms before grabbing a delicious bite of all-you-can-eat Yakinuku!

Mid of July to Late September – Kochia

Hitachi Seaside Park Kochia 1

Arguably the second most popular period to visit the Hitachi Seaside Park would be during summer for the Kochia (summer cypress). These are not so much flowers, but rather blooming red bushes that are native to the Eurasian continent. Depending on when you go, you will see them in different colours.

They start off as bright green in the peak of summer, and gradually change colour to become a deep vibrant red by the end of October, before slowly becoming a burnt colour, just in time for autumn.

During mid-August, there is an event called the Kochia Light-Up where the entire park lights up after dark with colourful LED lights. The event is complete with music and story-telling for the whole family.

Mid May to Early June, Early to Mid November – Rose

Pink Roses

The Hitachi Seaside Park’s rose garden receives little love compared to the other blooming flowers, but it’s still a gorgeous time to visit the park. The rose garden is relatively smaller than the rest of the venues at the park, but when it blooms, it’s stunning. If you’re visiting during this period, you won’t need to worry about crowds as much as during other periods.

An Introduction to Hitachi Seaside Park

Located just outside Hitachinaka City in Ibaraki Prefecture, about 120 kilometers northeast of Tokyo , Hitachi Seaside Park offers an escape from the bustle of urban life. The park served as an American military base until 1973, after which the land was returned to the Japanese government. Following some deliberation as to what to do with the land, the decision was made to convert it into a public park.

Hitachi Seaside Park first opened its doors to visitors in 1991, and since then has become a much-loved attraction for families, couples, and travelers seeking a stress-free escape to nature. The park is divided into six areas, each providing something a little different. We cover these areas in more detail below.

How to Get to Hitachi Seaside Park From Tokyo

The quickest way to get to Hitachi Seaside Park from Tokyo is via a limited express train on the JR Joban line. You can catch one of these trains from Shinagawa Station, Tokyo Station, or Ueno Station and ride it about one hour and 15 minutes to Katsuta Station. From there, a local bus goes directly from the station to Hitachi Seaside Park and takes about 15 minutes. In total, the fare will cost about 4,290 yen, one-way (the route is covered by the Japan Rail Pass ).

A cheaper option for those who don't have the Japan Rail Pass is to take a highway bus, which runs directly from Tokyo Station and costs 2,450 yen. These buses take about two and a half hours to get to the park and don't run as frequently as the train, but are still a fairly quick way to get there.

Booking highway buses can be difficult if you're not fluent in Japanese. If that's you, consider booking a day tour through Klook. On top of reserving a highway bus seat, you'll get a tour guide, lunch at the park, and an additional activity or two afterwards such as visiting another famous nearby park or going shopping.

Hitachi Seaside Park Areas

Hitachi seaside park's west area: entrance and lakeside.

This is one of two main entrances into Hitachi Seaside Park, located by the western parking zone. Walking through the West Entrance will see you greeted with an expansive view of the park's lakeside area. Here you'll be able to enjoy a beverage at the Lake Side Cafe while looking out across the pond, or you can walk a short distance to see two smaller flower gardens: the Suisen (Narcissus) Garden and the Tamago no Mori (Egg Forest) Flower Garden.

On the western side of the lake, you can also rent a bike that you can use to get around the park from the Nishiguchi Cycling Center.

For those wanting to know more about the development of the park, make sure to stop by the Rekishi (History) Gallery at the north tip of the lake near the entrance to the Miharashi Area.

Hitachi Seaside Park's West Area: Miharashi Area

The iconic hills of the Miharashi Area are perhaps the most iconic feature of the park. This area is known for its rolling blue landscape of nemophila flowers in the spring and the dancing kochia bushes in the autumn.

Follow the winding path from the northern side of the Lakeside Area to reach the Miharashi Area. From there, all that's left to do is find the perfect spot to capture your own take of its iconic view.

It's not just the rolling fields of flowers that make this part of Hitachi Seaside Park a pleasure to stroll around. There's also a sunflower maze to explore before arriving at the park's kominka, one of the oldest traditional houses in eastern Japan, and an accurate recreation of an old Japanese farming village. The view of this village changes greatly with the seasons. During the autumn, you'll find it surrounded by cosmos; in the summer, sunflowers and neon-green kochia; and by a maze of canola plants during the spring.

Much like the village's surroundings, the view of Miharashi Hill also changes with the seasons. From a bright blue that matches the sky of the summer months to a deep red that embodies the feel of autumn, every visit to the Miharashi Area of Hitachi Seaside Park is sure to be different.

Hitachi Seaside Park's South Area: Entrance and Pleasure Garden

Hitachi Seaside Park's Southern Area can be accessed via the park's Soyokaze or Matsukaze bridges, or directly from the southern parking area. This area offers something for the whole family, with a small golf course, a BMX zone, and the impressive Hitachi Rose Garden, which is located here. This rose garden is considered particularly important, as the rose is the symbol of Ibaraki Prefecture.

Towering over the Pleasure Garden is a large Ferris Wheel that provides a great view of much of Hitachi Seaside Park. A ride is a must-do if you happen to be in the area around sunset! You'll find further activities for young children around the back of the Ferris Wheel, including a small waterpark and a 400m long slide.

Hitachi Seaside Park's South Area: Grassland

In the central area of Hitachi Seaside Park lies the expansive Grassland Area, a free space that can be used for play or picnics. Barbeque facilities are available here, as well as a disc-golf course and athletics track. The Grassland Area is ideal for a summer outing to enjoy a picnic and catch some rays with friends and family.

Hitachi Seaside Park's South Area: Dune Gardens

The last of the park's main areas, the Dune Area overlooks the Pacific Ocean and features several fun activities within a short walking distance from each other.

The Ceramic Arts Studio here lets visitors attempt to create their own piece of pottery, while the Herb Garden boasts an array of plants with unique fragrances to enjoy. This area is bordered by the fittingly named "Aroma Lookout" building. Walk further inwards to enjoy a traditional rock garden before making your way to the Great Sand Dune.

Hitachi Seaside Park's Flower Calendar

As you'd expect, spring is naturally a peak time to visit Hitachi Seaside Park thanks to the abundance of flowers in bloom. The main draw has to be the blue nemophila covering Miharashi Hill between the months of April and May, but there are also plenty of other varieties of flowers to check out around the park. The Suisen (narcissus) Garden in the Western Area is in full bloom between March and April and covers the forest floor in a blanket of yellow. Tulip World (pictured above), on the other hand, has a whole host of vibrant colors on show!

Summer is another busy period for Hitachi Seaside Park. During the height of summer, the fields in the area near Miharashi Hill are packed with sunflowers. Thanks to some careful planting, these also form a natural maze to explore.

In summer, the park also hosts the popular Rock in Japan Festival. Over the course of 4 or so days, visitors can see famous Japanese acts the likes of Aimer, KANA-BOON, and SEKAI NO OWARI, to name just a few. (Actual artist lineup and dates to be confirmed closer to the event date. 2024 schedule not yet released.)

Towards the end of the season, the park's summer fair draws in many visitors from around Japan. Between the amazing festival food on offer, fireworks, and the Kochia bush illumination show in the warm evenings, the summer season provides plenty of reasons to visit the park!

Fall at the Hitachi Seaside Park brings with it the Kochia Carnival, held in celebration of the park's fields of charming round bushes turning their deep shade of red.

This period also sees the many varieties of cosmos flowers in the park reach full bloom. You'll be able to find several collections of these flowers around the park such as in the Miharashi area, where an array of purple cosmos are backdropped by the red kochia bushes; or the central areas, where you'll be able to take in the sight of almost 160,000 Kibana cosmos dotting the landscape. The roses in the Hitachi Rose Garden almost remain in bloom until early November, so be sure not to miss this area if you're visiting around this time.

Even in the months of winter, the park abounds with nature. Fittingly named "ice tulips" and wintersweets continue to remain in bloom until January. You'll be able to find the majority of the winter flowers in the area of the park closest to the sea, particularly around the Dune Area.

Even when these winter flowers begin to disappear for the year, there's only a short wait until the next wave of blossoms arrive as the ume (plum) trees begin to bloom towards the end of winter. This period of the year sees many young adults visit the park to drink Japanese plum wine called umeshu while sitting under canopies of blossoms.

A Guaranteed Great Day Outdoors at Hitachi Seaside Park

Regardless of the season, there's always something to do and see at the Hitachi Seaside Park. Thanks to good transport connections, this park makes for the perfect day trip for anyone in the Kanto region .

Should you find yourself wanting to get away from the bustle of the city, consider a trip to the Hitachi Seaside Park for a much welcome break!

Hitachi Seaside Park

The great flower park on tohoku pacific coast.

Hitachi Seaside Park is a 190 hectares flower park located in Hitachinaka, in Ibaraki prefecture in the north-east of Tokyo. The garden offers wonderful views all year long thanks to a rich blooming calendar, with dozens of flowers species, such as narcissus, tulips, blue nemophila and kochias turning crimson in autumn.

Even if you have never heard about this great flower park , chances are high that you have already seen pictures taken there.

The vast Hitachi Seaside Parks is characterized by a careful staggering of flower bloomings, that can be admired all year long. The focus is placed on four particular species’ blossoms:

  • A million of (yellow) narcissus, from the end of March to mid- April (see picture below);
  • 170 species of tulips, during the second half of April;
  • 4,5 (!) million of blue nemophila, from the end of April to mid- May ;
  • Red kochias cypress, from the end of September to mid- October .

The complete bloom calendar is available on Hitachi Seaside Park's official website to help planning your visit .

Hitachi Seaside Park is not the easiest touristic spot to reach (about two hours from Tokyo ), but the walk it offers is worth the travel.

Hitachi Seaside park (Ibaraki) 7

A lot more than flowers!

The place is so wide that it may be necessary to use the transportation methods offered on site to discover the park on its whole. It is possible to rent a bicycle to ride on the 10 kilometers of cycling trails. A little train  🚅 allows for a roundtrip, with ten stops and a 40 minutes total ride.

Aside the unavoidable restaurants and cafés, as well as picnic spots, Hitachi Seaside Park hides some good surprises: going south, visitors will find a hundred meters high Ferris wheel, a BMX course, a roller coaster and even a golf course!

In the beginning of August each year, the wide "Daisogen" square even hosts the Rock in Japan festival.

Due to its position on the southern coast of Tohoku , Hitachi Seaside Park was directly hit by 2011, March 11 tsunami. However, when we visited three years later, there were no obvious signs of the disaster left in Hitachinaka.

Two other similar parks exist in the north and in the south of Japan: respectively Farm Tomita near Furano, and Nokonoshima Island Park off Fukuoka ’s shores.

This vast park is best known for the stunning blue nemophila flowers in spring (mid-April onwards) and bright red kochia bushes in autumn (October). There's plenty to see year-round, including daffodils, tulips, sunflowers, and oil-seed rape blossoms. In addition to flowers, it is home to a small amusement park and traditional Japanese farmhouses. Once inside, visitors can enjoy a stroll, rent a bicycle, or ride the Seaside Train to get around. The park is entirely wheelchair accessible. Moreover, Hitachi Seaside Park is located close to other destinations such as Aquaworld Aquarium, Nakaminato Fish Market, and Kairakuen Park. Howaen Garden

Howaen Garden

Howaen Garden is a spacious garden adjacent to Keiganji Temple (established in 1682). It is a popular place to enjoy blooming hydrangeas in Mito. The garden's history is said to have begun around the late 17th century when Mitsukuni Tokugawa (1628 - 1701), the second lord of the Mito Domain, granted it the name Howaen. During the early Showa period (1926 - 1989), the garden was expanded with a pond and artificial hills added to its landscaping by local volunteers and became a pure Japanese-style garden. Hydrangeas were planted in Howaen Garden after the authority of the garden was transferred from the temple to Mito City in 1950. When June arrives, the garden's 6,000 hydrangeas in 100 varieties reach their peak, making it the best time to view the flowers. The Mito Hydrangea Festival takes place during this season.

Kasama Himatsuri Pottery Festival

Kasama Himatsuri Pottery Festival

This is the largest pottery and arts festival in Ibaraki, attracting nearly 550,000 visitors each year. More than 200 artists, craftspeople, and gallery owners exhibit their works at the festival. Even if pottery isn’t your thing, this festival is worth visiting to see the individuality and artistry that goes into each display. Exploring the festival will work up an appetite, but plenty of food stalls will satiate the stomach. Many of these stalls are run by local artists who serve fusion dishes and fun twists on classic Japanese festival food. Various events take place during the festivities, including a clay mask auction, musical performances, and special exhibitions by local children. Kids can also make their own clay models and use a potter’s wheel.

Kasama Inari Shrine

Kasama Inari Shrine

First established in 651, Kasama Inari Shrine is one of Japan's famous Inari shrines, attracting around 3.5 million pilgrims and visitors annually. The sacred site enshrines Ukanomitama-no-Mikoto, known to answer prayers for success in business and protection from fires. The shrine grounds are stunning in the late spring when the wisteria flower bloom. Another beautiful time to visit is during the chrysanthemum festival in autumn. The streets leading up to the shrine are filled with various shops to explore, from traditional soba restaurants to fashionable cafes and renovated sake breweries. Specialties of the area include Kasama Inari Sushi, rice with walnuts, and other seasonal products wrapped in deep-fried tofu and roasted chestnuts. Kasama City is known for its pottery, and there are plenty of galleries in the area to pick up a souvenir before heading home.

Japan’s Famous Fields of Baby Blue

April 10, 2021 by Robert Schrader Leave a Comment

If you’ve ever seen Hitachi Seaside Park on Instagram, you’ve probably been tempted to visit. I’ve felt this way for many years, although I resisted the urge until quite recently.

Back before Covid-19 ruined 2020, the flower-filled idyll was supposed to have been the centerpiece of that year’s sakura trip, connective travel tissue between the cherry blossoms west and south of Tokyo, and those in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region. Obviously, we know how that went.

The good news? I finally made it to Hitachi Seaside Park in 2021, albeit not without some secondary and tertiary hiccups. The better news? I’ll lay out everything you need to know in order to plan your own visit, whether you visit Hitachi Seaside Park from Tokyo, or stay overnight somewhere closer to the park.

Why I (Finally) Visited Hitachi Seaside Park

Although I’ve wanted to see Hitachi Seaside Park with my own eyes for many years, it wasn’t until early 2020 that I first put concrete plans in place to go there. Unfortunately, SARS-CoV-2 and the fallout around it put an end to those. The good news is that I managed to enter Japan before the end of that year (the pandemic inspired me to make good on my long-held desire to formally study Japanese in Kyoto); I vowed to visit in 2021.

As I write this post, it’s been less than 24 hours since I returned from the park; the experience seems quite surreal, being only barely in my rearview mirror. Certainly, it was as beautiful as I expected, even if I’d by lying if I said visiting was easy or straightforward. Below, I’ll talk you through the practical steps of putting your own trip together, before making a broader judgment on the merits of the place.

How to Visit Hitachi Seaside Park (from Tokyo or Elsewhere)

Decide between spring or autumn.

visit the hitachi seaside park (ibaraki japan)

Although Hitachi is most famous for the “blue eye” nemophila flowers that cover its Miharashi-no-oka hillside in mid-to-late April, there’s also a case to be made for visiting in autumn. In mid-to-late October, its kochia “summer cypress” plants take on a stunning scarlet color you have to see to believe.

Aim to stay flexible

visit the hitachi seaside park (ibaraki japan)

Regardless of when you plan to visit Hitachi Seaside Park, it’s important to stay flexible, at least if you’re intent on observing the peak. Forecasts usually aren’t released until a few weeks before the season begins ; even then, they can and do change. If you’re on a longer trip (such as one month in Japan ) and can be more spontaneous, you’ll maximize your chances.

Carefully watch forecasts

visit the hitachi seaside park (ibaraki japan)

If you plan to see Hitachi in the spring (as I imagine most of you do), keep in mind that a clear, blue sky is necessary for the best pictures. While the flowers themselves are still beautiful amid clouds and rain, the overall landscape doesn’t have the same mesmerizing effect if the weather is bad. Add “Hitachinaka” to your phone’s weather app, and keep an eye on it!

Consider renting a car

visit the hitachi seaside park (ibaraki japan)

Some public transport options exist to reach Hitachi Seaside Park, but it’s a great deal more convenient to get there by car, ideally from Mito, the closest city to the park. I say this in spite of generally detesting the experience of driving in Japan , due to the country’s slow speed limits (and even slower drivers).

Explore the rest of underrated Ibaraki

visit the hitachi seaside park (ibaraki japan)

Ibaraki is known among the Japanese as the country’s least attractive prefecture, a characterization I find a bit harsh. While I’ll concede that this is definitely not the most exciting place in Japan, there are still many worthwhile experiences, from the towering standing daibutsu of Ushiku Buddha, to Mito city’s Kairaku-en, one of Japan’s top three landscape gardens .

Is Hitachi Seaside Park Worth Visiting?

Hitachi Seaside Park is worth visiting if you’re clear about specifically why you want to do, and make peace with the cost and strenuousness of getting/being there. Which is to say your trip has to be about more than getting a single shot for Instagram. For example, I was able to create two pieces of content, and add another proverbial color to the palette of destinations I offer to my custom Japan itinerary clients.

Indeed, while the nemophila are gorgeous once you reach the park, the potential for road bumps along the journey can be off-putting if you aren’t totally committed. Beyond the transportation issues I’ve highlighted in the preceding paragraphs, I need to again emphasize how important having ideal weather is: The “blue eye” flowers simply aren’t amazing enough to justify a trip to Hitachi Park unless the sky is perfectly blue and clear as well.

Other FAQ About Visiting Hitachi Seaside Park

When can you visit hitachi seaside park.

Hitachi Seaside Park is open all year, but the most popular times to visit are in spring and autumn. Specifically, in mid-to-late April when the “blue eye” nemophila flowers are blooming and in mid-to-late October, when the kochia summer cypress reach a scarlet peak.

How far is Hitachi Seaside Park from Tokyo?

Hitachi Seaside Park takes a minimum of 2-3 hours to reach from Tokyo, and potentially longer. The most efficient way to reach it is to take a limited express train from Shinagawa, Tokyo or Ueno to Mito, the capital of Ibaraki prefecture, and rent a car to drive the rest of the distance.

How do you get from Ibaraki to Tokyo?

Major cities in Ibaraki prefecture such as Ushiku and Mito are connected to Tokyo via limited express Hitachi and Tokiwa trains, which stop at Shinagawa and Ueno, in addition to Tokyo Station. Alternatively, you drive the expressway from Ibaraki to Tokyo in between 2-3 hours, depending upon where your journey originates and terminates.

The Bottom Line

Want to visit Hitachi Seaside Park from Tokyo? The good news is that it’s beautiful, and mostly lives up to the hype built up around it. The bad news? It’s not for everyone. For most travelers, this is because the effort required to reach the park (SPOILER ALERT: Renting a car is usually the best option) might not be worth the reward you receive upon arriving to the park, especially if the weather is bad or it’s very crowded. On the other hand, if you come to Japan even in small part due to its various displays of seasonal beauty, from flowers like the cherry blossoms to brilliant autumn colors , I have a feeling you’ll enjoy the park as much as I did. Sound like a good time? Consider hiring me to plan your next Japan trip!

The park’s most iconic flower is the blue nemophila (baby blue eyes). This sky blue flower covers Miharashi Hill in the spring . It’s an image that’s hard to beat – it almost looks like the hill has been covered over by the sky. When these blue flowers start to bloom, a flower festival, Nemophila Harmony is held from late April to mid May.

The flowers typically look the best from late April to the middle of May. There are walking paths that crisscross over the hill. They not only give you a chance to walk through the flowers but also provide some amazing views of the Pacific Ocean as well as the rest of the park.

If you can’t make the blue nemophila bloom, kochia bushes cover Miharashi Hill in the fall and they will slowly turn red over the course of the autumn. The colors are usually at their best from early to mid-October. And even if you miss both the blue nemophila and the red kochia, you can still see many other flowers on the hill throughout the year, including striking cosmos, early blooming daffodils, roses, sunflowers, and lovely tulip blooms.

Please note if you come to Ibaraki in the fall to see glorious looking kochia, don’t leave the area without a visit to Fukuroda Falls. Situated in the northeastern part of Kanto region , Ibaraki prefecture is known for Mito’s Kairakuen Garden . Many tourists visit the garden to see plum blossoms in early spring. The garden is considered one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan.

Kairakuen is a scenic spot with a lot of viewpoints to enjoy its seasonal beauty, especially when all the plum trees are at full bloom, whereas Hitachi Seaside Park offers a large area to admire the seasonal flowers throughout the year.

For tourists and locals alike, these two scenic spots are hugely popular for spending a day away from Tokyo. Though it does not mean you are not encouraged to visit other beautiful places scattered throughout the prefecture.

Seasonal Guide to The Best Time To Visit

visit the hitachi seaside park (ibaraki japan)

The best time to visit Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki, Japan, truly depends on what you want to experience, as the park is famous for its year-round blooms and seasonal events. Each season offers a unique allure with a vibrant display of flowers and festivities that can cater to different interests. Traveloka will guide you in deciding when to plan your visit.

1. Spring (Late April to Mid-May) - Nemophila Harmony

Peak Season: If you are keen on seeing the iconic Nemophila (baby blue eyes), the best time to visit is from late April through mid-May. Spring: Nemophila Harmony

The main draw of Hitachi Seaside Park in the spring is the breathtaking view of Nemophila, or "baby blue eyes." During late April to mid-May, over 4.5 million sky-blue Nemophila flowers bloom, covering Miharashi Hill like a soft blue carpet. The sight is so dreamlike that it feels like walking in a painting, with the blue sky above and a sea of blue below.

Summer: Kochia Carnival

As the seasons transition, the park undergoes a dramatic transformation with the Kochia shrubs. Around mid-July, these bushy, green plants begin to turn a vibrant crimson, peaking in October. Walking among these red balls of fluff feels otherworldly, providing excellent opportunities for surreal photography against the backdrop of Mt. Fuji on clear days.

Autumn brings another layer of change, as millions of cosmos flowers bloom in synchronization. The white, pink, and red hues contrast beautifully with the fiery red kochia. Moreover, the park’s safflower field blooms in golden-yellow, adding to the autumnal tapestry of colors.

HITACHI SEASIDE PARK FROM TOKYO

by thepinay solobackpacker | Apr 21, 2018 | Ibaraki , Itinerary , Japan , Tokyo , Travel Guide | 6 comments

I was in Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki, Japan . The sun was pouring its morning benediction, shining through towering trees interrupted by yellow blooms. My soul has always been attracted to flowers, like how they are attracted to sunlight. Yes, flowers are ephemeral, but there’s this inexplicable feeling when I am surrounded by them, like they take away all my fears, fleetingly.

The photo of Miharashi Hill in Hitachi Seaside Park with blue nemophilas was the main reason we were there.  But I first learned about Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka City in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan while browsing my friend’s blog a few years ago.  I still vividly remember that image of the chairs fringed by narcissus flowers taken by my friend.  That photo alone made me wish that one day, at the right season, I will see that image too in real life.

HITACHI 1

I had forgotten that dream, until recently, during our trip to Tokyo .  When Jetstar invited us to Nagoya , we decided to extend our trip and take a night bus from Nagoya to Tokyo .  So when we were planning our Tokyo itinerary , I made sure that we’ll make a sidetrip to Hitachi Seaside Park .

And as luck would have it, I found myself leisurely walking along Suisen Garden, where the pathway was surrounded by narcissus bloom in early May.  My guide was no other than my good friend Vins of The Poor Traveler .  The same person who wrote the Hitachi Seaside Park blog.  Honestly though, the scene wasn’t as stunning as I saw on the pictures because many of the yellow flowers have wilted already, but I was ready for more surprises.  And thankfully, Hitachi Seaside Park did not disappoint.

HITACHI SEASIDE PARK OPEN HOURS

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT HITACHI SEASIDE PARK?

If you want to see the blue nemophila and the tulips, visit around late April to early May.  But avoid the Golden Week because it’s gonna be too crowded.

HITACHI SEASIDE PARK FLOWER CALENDAR

HITACHI 4

Hitachi Seaside Park is actually blooming year-round.  If you visit around early January to mid-March, you’ll encounter a wealth of grapeseed flowers sprinkled around the park.  Come late March to mid-April, the best spot to visit is Suisen Garden for its narcissus bloom.  And by mid to late April, myriads of tulips are in bloom at Tamago no Mori.

Late April to mid-May, the queen of all flowers – the blue nemophilas fill Miharashi Hill.  Despite the crowd it brings, the moment is still magical.  The ceaseless wind blows the fragile petals of the tiny indigo flowers as they gracefully sway to its rhythm.

Early May to early June, the lovely poppy flowers blossom at Daisogen Flower Garden.  And by mid-June, you’ll find oumegasaso scattered around Hitachinaka Nature Forest.  Meanwhile, roses congregate around Hitachi Rose Garden by late May to early June and from early to mid-November.

Around early July to early August, don’t miss the Sakyu Garden filled with sukashiyuri lily.  Hitachi Seaside Park turns indigo by mid-July, as lavender bloom in Kaori no Tani.  And by late July to mid-September, pink, red and orange zinnias clad the Miharashi no Sato. Pampa grass are all over Hitachi Seaside Park by early September.

By mid-September to late October, cosmos fill the Daisogen Flower Garden.  And by October, Hitachi Seaside Park turns red as Miharashi Hill is dominated by kochia.  Early to late October, the Sakyu Garden is clad by Nippon daisies.

THINGS TO DO IN HITACHI SEASIDE PARK

HITACHI 21

Aside from flower galore, Hitachi Seaside Park also features a small amusement park crowned by a 100 meter tall Ferris wheel.   Tourists can also try the 25 rides here such as merry-go-round and roller coaster, but entrance fee is required for each ride.  If you like biking, you’ll be glad to know that you can cycle around the sprawling park.

Eating is not a problem in Hitachi Seaside Park as there are a couple of food trucks scattered around here, but the cheapest food can be found near Maharashi Hill as well as a vendo machine for drinks near the toilet. Home-made drinks are quite expensive if you buy from food trucks.

  • Seasonal Splendor at Hitachi Seaside Park

A tapestry of flowers blooms year-round on the beautiful Ibaraki coast

Hitachi Seaside Park is famous for its large-scale flower display, which changes with the seasons. Spring rolls in on a colorful wave, as nearly 260,000 tulips and over a million narcissus flowers carpet the areas around the forest walkways. Around the same time, the sprawling hillside near the park’s seaside boundary bursts forth in a brilliant display of blue nemophila. Summer hues abound with the arrival of sunflowers and zinnia, and the refreshing sight of verdant green kochia bushes on the hill. Those kochia take on a bright magenta hue as the calendar turns to autumn, making for a photogenic contrast with the season’s clear blue skies. Even winter offers a colorful landscape, with the blooming of ice tulips and Japanese apricot trees.

visit the hitachi seaside park (ibaraki japan)

While flowers are the main draw, the park also offers a host of entertainment options. An amusement park makes for the perfect family outing, while the athletic area appeals to the more active traveler. All can come together to enjoy a meal in the barbecue garden or one of the numerous cafes or restaurants located throughout the grounds.

Access: From Tokyo Station, take the Hitachi Limited Express Train to Katsuta Station (about 1 hour and 20 minutes); transfer to the Ibaraki Kotsu bus to the Kaihin Koen Nishiguchi bus stop; walk about 10 minutes to the park.

The Flowers of Hitachi Seaside Park

Like in paradise

Victoria Simkovic

Last year I thought that it was somewhat unfair how the cherry blossoms always steal the show, so that other flowers get forgotten. As a result, in early May I found myself on the train, heading towards Ibaraki City. After some research and recommendations from my photographer friends I found out that Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki City is famous for its fairytale-like landscape during the end of April and the beginning of May. Here, Baby Blue Eyes are the stars of the show. All 4.5 million of them.

Hitachi Seaside Park: Ibaraki's Sky Blue Nemophila Flower Garden

article thumbnail image

Hitachi Seaside Park features various beautiful seasonal flowers and large green spaces. At no other time of the year is this park more beautiful than when the blue Nemophila flowers go in bloom at the beginning of May!

Hitachi Seaside Park in Spring - View the Beautiful Nemophila Flowers!

The Hitachi Seaside Park is a wide public park in Ibaraki stretching over an area of around 350 hectares. This park is famous countrywide for its various seasonal flowers blooming throughout the year - narcissus and tulips in spring, nemophila and roses in early summer, zinnias in summer, and kochia and cosmos flowers in the fall.

Therapy for the soul: blue sea of Nemophila at Hitachi Seaside Park, Ibaraki

To get to the flower garden, you will walk along some narrow paths which will lead you under the green canopy. Hitachi Seaside Park is remarkable not only for its famous flowers, but also for its amazingly large green space - a perfect place for those who love nature.

However, when speaking of Hitachi Seaside Park, people will immediately think of its famous Nemophila flowers. It will soon be the season for this flower to bloom! Let's see some of the reasons why you should definitely check out this garden around the beginning of May.

Nemophila in full bloom - a sea of little blue bells

Nemophila is commonly known as Baby Blue Eyes . It is said that newborn babies of European heritage usually have blue eyes, no matter what color they will later become.

As the name suggests, Nemophila is a transparent round-shaped flower with a sky-blue color, just as bright and pure like the color of a baby’s eyes. This color is found comparatively rare in the vegetal world, and this may be the reason why it receives so much attention.
