Maggots and other bugs released at Watergate Hotel, where Netanyahu is staying during his D.C. visit

By Mary Cunningham , S. Dev

July 24, 2024 / 8:19 PM EDT / CBS News

It seems a new kind of bugging situation has hit the Watergate Hotel. Video posted on Wednesday showed a large number of maggots, crickets and other bugs crawling around the hotel, which is where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is staying during his contentious visit to Washington, D.C.

The Palestinian Youth Movement, a grassroots advocacy group, posted an  Instagram video of the critters, claiming they were let loose in protest of Israel's deadly war against Hamas, which has  killed more than 39,000 Palestinians , according to Gaza officials.

The video shows maggots inching across what appears to be a large conference table covered in a white tablecloth with water glasses, set against the backdrop of American and Israeli flags. It also shows the insects scurrying across marble floors elsewhere in the hotel as well as fire alarms going off in the hotel's hallways.

Pro-Palestinian activists held a rally outside The Watergate Hotel

The post claimed that the critters were released on multiple floors and that fire alarms were set off for over 30 minutes.

"Palestine protestors manufactured chaos at the Watergate Hotel last night so that Netanyahu, Israeli Mossad agents, and the Secret Service had no peace as they continue to terrorize our people," the post says.

The apparent act of creepy crawly resistance came as thousands of protesters gathered near the Capitol during Netanyahu's address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday chanting "Free, Free Palestine." Police wearing gas marks blocked the crowd from getting closer to the Capitol, and officers deployed pepper spray after some members of the crowd allegedly became violent.

"We are aware of the social media video circulating on multiple platforms involving The Watergate Hotel and the unfortunate incident that occurred at the property yesterday," the hotel said in a statement. "We took the necessary steps to ensure the property has been sanitized and is now operating as normal. We are cooperating fully with authorities, who are handling the situation."

A Public Safety Joint Information Center spokesperson for the Secret Service said, "The Watergate facility has an expansive footprint and remains open for businesses, residences and guests. At no time was there any threat to our protectees."

The Palestinian Youth Movement's website describes the group as a "grassroots movement of young Palestinians dedicated to the liberation of our homeland and people."

The people behind the incident remain unknown, though the Washington Post  reported that an anonymous source sent the video to the DMV chapter of the Palestinian Youth Movement, which posted it on their behalf.

Anti-Israel agitators are reportedly behind the release of larvae in a famous D.C. hotel to protest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's trip to the nation's capital.

Netanyahu traveled to D.C. to meet with lawmakers and deliver a joint session address to Congress on Wednesday. Anti-Israel agitators have gathered throughout the capital to protest his trip, targeting the Watergate Hotel where he is reportedly staying during the visit.

A video filmed within the hotel shows maggots and crickets released in various common spaces, with one shot showing a table full of mealworms while the Israeli and American flags stood in the background.

"Palestine protestors manufactured chaos at the Watergate Hotel last night so that Netanyahu, Israeli Mossad agents, and the Secret Service had no peace as they continue to terrorize our people," the Palestinian Youth Movement's DMV chapter posted on their social media, alongside the video.

Maggots, crickets released at Watergate Hotel in protest of Netanyahu visit

The video, posted jointly to Instagram by the Palestinian Youth Movement and its DMV chapter, depicts swarms of crickets on the hotel’s floor and claims protesters triggered the hotel’s fire alarm.

Key takeaways

Summary is AI-generated, newsroom-reviewed.

  • Protesters release vermin at the Watergate Hotel where Netanyahu is staying in D.C.
  • The protest raised security questions, but officials said protectees were not under threat.
  • The hotel said it was sanitized and Watergate officials are cooperating with authorities.

An Instagram video posted Wednesday shows hundreds of mealworms, maggots and crickets crawling around the Watergate Hotel where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is staying during his visit to D.C., raising questions about how protesters who claimed to unleash the vermin were able to get onto the property as the area has been under tight security.

The video, posted jointly to Instagram by the Palestinian Youth Movement and its DMV chapter, depicts swarms of crickets on the hotel’s floor and claims protesters triggered the hotel’s fire alarm “to ensure that there will be no rest before Netanyahu and Congress disgraces themselves in front of the world” when the Israeli leader addressed Congress in a joint meeting Wednesday. The video also shows maggots and mealworms crawling across a table set with drinking glasses as Israeli and American flags stand side by side in the background.

An official familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss security matters said the video appeared to be authentic.

Residents of the Watergate complex said U.S. Secret Service and D.C. police set up checkpoints over the weekend to vet anyone entering the property.

“The Watergate facility has an expansive footprint and remains open for businesses, residences and guests,” said Abel Trevino, a spokesperson for a public safety team made up of local and federal agencies staffing Netanyahu’s visit to the District. “At no time was there any threat to our protectees.”

The hotel, whose answering machine ironically greets callers with “There’s no need to break in” as a nod to its storied history, said in a statement it was aware of the video and “the unfortunate incident that occurred at the property yesterday.”

“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our guests and staff,” the statement from a hotel spokesperson said. “We took the necessary steps to ensure the property has been sanitized and is now operating as normal. We are cooperating fully with authorities, who are handling the situation. As this is an open case, we are unable to provide any further details at this time.”

A D.C. Fire and EMS spokesperson said in a statement that the agency had fire inspectors stationed at Netanyahu’s hotel “at the request of the United States Secret Service,” and that after the alarm sounded, fire officials “determined there was no fire emergency and any fire department response was cancelled.”

Netanyahu’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Zaid Khatib, 27, an organizer with the DMV chapter of the Palestinian Youth Movement said an anonymous tipster sent the video to his group, which in turn posted it Wednesday morning.

Khatib said he was not involved in this protest and did not know who was responsible, but he said protesters have also held noise demonstrations outside the hotel every morning and night to make sure Netanyahu “will enjoy no rest while he is here.”

The releasing of maggots, he said, reflects “the fact that all of D.C. from organizations to individuals reject the stay of a war criminal in our city.”

Khatib said he does not know if there are more protests planned for inside the Watergate Hotel.

“It reflects a tremendous security failure on their part,” he said, referring to law enforcement. “The city of D.C. and the United States government has stolen tens of millions of dollars to roll out the red carpet for a war criminal and even then, they can’t stop something as simple as maggots being dropped … at the Watergate Hotel.”

Maggots and worms released at Benjamin Netanyahu’s Washington hotel amid Gaza war protests

A nti-war protesters in Washington DC appear to have released maggots and worms in and around the hotel where Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is staying during his US visit.

The Palestinian Youth Movement, a grassroots advocacy group, shared an Instagram video showing the worms, and suggested it was done in protest against Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza , which has killed over 39,000 Palestinians according to the region’s Hamas-run health ministry.

The video, which showed insects crawling inside the Watergate Hotel where Mr Netanyahu is staying , was reportedly sent anonymously to the Palestinian Youth Movement, which put it up on social media.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for releasing the worms at the hotel , but the incident came as protesters staged demonstrations outside the hotel and near the Capitol during Mr Netanyahu’s address to Congress.

“Palestine protesters manufactured chaos at the Watergate Hotel last night so that Netanyahu, Israeli Mossad agents, and the Secret Service had no peace as they continue to terrorise our people,” the Instagram post said.

Their video showed thousands of “mealworms and maggots” on the hotel’s banquet tables and crickets on multiple floors.

The post claimed that “fire alarms were triggered for over 30 minutes on multiple floors”.

“We are aware of the social media video circulating on multiple platforms involving the Watergate Hotel and the unfortunate incident that occurred at the property yesterday,” the hotel said in a statement. “We took the necessary steps to ensure the property has been sanitised and is now operating as normal. We are cooperating fully with authorities, who are handling the situation.”

Thousands of Palestinians and anti-war protesters descended on Washington DC as Mr Netanyahu addressed Congress on Wednesday. Some clashed with police.

“The crowd failed to obey our order to move back from our police line,’’ Capitol police said in a post on X. “We are deploying pepper spray towards anyone trying to break the law and cross that line.’’

At the Union Station Plaza, US flags were replaced with Palestinian ones and an American flag was burned.

Israel has vowed not to stop its war on Gaza until it has eradicated Hamas, which carried out an attack on southern Israel on 7 October last year that killed almost 1,200 people, most of them civilians. Its conduct in the war has been widely condemned by the international community, with many countries calling for a humanitarian ceasefire.

Mr Netanyahu defended the war during his speech to Congress , calling it “a clash between barbarism and civilization” and saying the 7 October attack was “like twenty 9/11’s in one day”. Dozens of Democrats boycotted the address, and Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, the only Palestinian-American congresswoman, held up a sign that said “War Criminal” during much of Netanyahu’s speech.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ’s stay at the Watergate Hotel on Tuesday night was interrupted by pro- Palestine protestors, who unleashed a series of near-biblical plagues on him and the other guests there.

Demonstrators unleashed crickets around the halls and maggots were dumped in a meeting room set to be occupied by Netanyahu, while a projected image of the the Israeli leader with the words “Wanted: Arrest This War Criminal” shone on to the outside of the hotel. Alarms also rang throughout the building during the chaotic protest.

Videos posted by the Palestinian Youth Movement’s Instagram account documented the mayhem, although the group did not claim responsibility for the protests.

“Protestors reportedly manufactured chaos at the Watergate Hotel last night so that Netanyahu, Israeli Mossad agents, and the Secret Service had no peace as they continue to terrorize our people,” the group wrote in one of the posts. “Mealworms and maggots (not talking about Netanyahu) were reportedly left on their banquet tables, and crickets were released on multiple floors of the hotel.”

“Fire alarms were triggered for over 30 minutes on multiple floors to ensure that there will be no rest before Netanyahu and Congress disgrace themselves in front of the world for failing to achieve any of their military and political objectives,” the group added.

Outside, dozens of cops formed a wall around protestors who chanted, beat drums and made plenty of noise.

“The people will be here all night to ensure Netanyahu gets no sleep or quiet. From wherever we are, we will continue to ensure that there will be not one moment’s peace for war criminals,” the group wrote in another post.

“We are aware of the social media video circulating on multiple platforms involving The Watergate Hotel and the unfortunate incident that occurred at the property yesterday,” Kelsey Sethi, the public relations agent for the Watergate Hotel, told the Daily Beast in an emailed statement. “Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our guests and staff. We took the necessary steps to ensure the property has been sanitized and is now operating as normal. We are cooperating fully with authorities, who are handling the situation.”

The protests come a day before Netanyahu addressed a joint session of congress.

On Wednesday, protestors gathered outside the Capitol building to continue their protests of Netanyahu.

Videos show protestors being met with a “chemical agent” from police as they made their way toward the Capitol building, according to the Associated Press .

11 Must-Know Tips to Improve Your Hotel Videos

young woman making corporate demonstration video

Relevant and engaging hotel videos are proven ways to reach potential guests. In fact, Google discovered that 56% of people traveling on business, and 35% of those on pleasure trips, interacted at some point with hospitality-related videos. Read on to discover how videos drive direct bookings, and learn must-know hotel video tips to help you create engaging content that converts.

Video matters, especially in the hotel business where visuals (the view, the amenities, the furnishings) have a powerful impact on the guest experience. Videos are the perfect medium to show, rather than tell, what makes your property spectacular. They also help your hotel:

  • Rank higher in search results . Videos are more likely to achieve organic page ranks in Google than plain text results. Building a cache of videos puts you at the top of the Search Engine Results Page (SERP) and helps people find you.
  • Reach decision-makers. Almost 60% of company decision-makers would rather watch a video than read an article or blog post, according to HubSpot research. This can help you reach group sales decision-makers .
  • Build trust and brand awareness. Telling your hotel or venue's story through video — including things like testimonials and answers to common questions — promotes authenticity, setting the foundation of your mission and letting customers know what they can expect from you.
  • Showcase standout features. With an average shot length of under 3 seconds, videos provide a highlight reel of different rooms and amenities. Video is a particularly effective way to sell hotel meeting space to Millennial event planners — 48% of this generation only watch videos on their mobile device .
  • Influence group booking decisions . Videos can be the differentiator when busy event planners are sourcing venues .
  • Increase open rates, click-throughs in emails, reduce unsubscribes. Including a video in an email can boost click-through rates up to 65%  and track audience engagement in a measurable way.
  • Boost conversions, sales, and revenue. Using videos on landing pages can increase conversions by 86%  and grow revenue almost 50% faster than other strategies.

Now that you know the power of videos, let’s look at tips for making them! And while we know that some of these tips may not be able to be applied during the COVID-19 pandemic, we hope that you can get the most out of them in the long run. Because, as Cvent CEO & Founder Reggie Aggarwal said , "the only way through is together. We prepare now for the better times ahead."

Discover 11 must-know hotel video tips:

1. keep it short and get straight to the point..

Your videos are up against short attention spans, increasing competition for that minimal attention, and audience frustration with videos that don’t clearly explain a product or service. According to HubSpot, two minutes is the best length for marketing videos on YouTube  — and that’s considered long-form!

You’ll enjoy the best results and engagement if you keep your videos brief, and the information clear and concise. Here’s how to make it happen:

  • Include an introduction that piques interest and explains what’s in store.
  • Give a comprehensive tour, but speed up transitions between key locations so you don’t waste precious video time in hallways.
  • Use inclusionary language and shots that help the viewer imagine themselves relaxing in the pool or visiting the spa. (Think shots of doors opening, and voiceover narration that directly welcomes the viewer to “Discover unmatched service…” or “Step out of the hustle and bustle in our luxurious spa…”)

Put these hotel video tips to good use by reading our digital marketing guide

2. Know your audience — and make sure you speak directly to them.

Tailor what you're showcasing in your video to your target consumer. For example, event planners are going to want to see your meeting spaces and business center highlighted, rather than families frolicking in the pool.

Spend time creating a virtual customer persona and getting to know what they want. This is an effective way to conceptualize who you're talking to in your video. What are your guests and clients looking for? What are their pain points? What’s their style and what matters most to them during a stay or conference?

3. Choose shots that showcase your property accurately.

Videos are your flagship content. They often make the first impression on your website homepage or pinned to the top of your YouTube channel. They must showcase what you do best — whether that’s a no-muss-no-fuss business travel experience or luxury spa services. Here’s how to pin down your focus so you get those key close-ups and wide shots:

Ask your hotel staff about their favorite offerings and architectural elements at your property.

Review customer feedback for mentions of common amenities and views.

Before you start shooting, make a shot list. Without one, you’ll likely miss shots only to remember when the video crew has packed up and left.

Once you decide what’s in your shots, you need to clarify the types of shots for each visual. Here your camera person can get creative, but in general:

Use a steady 3-second pan, zoom, or other basic camera moves for smaller hotel features, such as the lobby coffee area, guest bathrooms, and standout architectural features.

Use longer shots to show the scope of hotel exteriors, landscaping, exhibit halls, and conference rooms.

Always get multiple shots from different angles, so you have a lot of footage to work with in editing.

4. Use UX design best practices to embed video on your website.

UX stands for the user experience of a website or app. When embedding videos on your website homepage or landing pages, there are a couple of UX fundamentals to keep in mind:

Prominently display your video above the fold on your homepage. This is the part of the webpage visible the moment it loads — this way visitors don’t have to scroll to check out the video.

People scan websites in an F-pattern. This means they start at the upper left and scan across, then drop down a level and scan from left to right. Priority videos should go in the top left corner of the website.

Autoplay videos are unpopular . Make sure your video does not automatically begin playing without someone clicking the play button.

Include subtitles.

5. Choose appealing and appropriate on-air talent and background music.

When considering people for voiceover narration, an on-camera host, or interview subjects, make sure they're tailored to your audience. If you do a lot of international business, someone with a distinguishable accent helps instill a feeling of familiarity. When drawing domestic attendees regionally, try to use talent with similar accents, whether that’s southern or mid-western.

If your average event planner is female, then having a woman’s voice improves comfort levels and builds trust. And if your video goal is drawing attention from high-powered corporate planners, your on-air and voiceover talent should convey professionalism and expertise — nothing too informal.

Additionally, background music helps accentuate the mood you're trying to convey in the video. Think fun, upbeat music for family vacations; techno beats for business trade shows; and sweeping, classical music for elegant properties and hotels with stunning views.

6. Educate your business travel audience with animation (but use sparingly).

Animation is a valuable way to explain complex subject matter. You can use animated visuals to demonstrate how your facility’s WiFi system reaches an outdoor pavilion, or to showcase the versatility of your A/V offerings.

Explore the free or low-cost online animation makers available, including Animaker , Biteable , and Moovly . If you want to hire someone, expect costs ranging from $150 to $2,000 per minute of animation.

Finally, keep in mind that people relate to live-action video with friendly human faces and real places more than animation. Keep animation to a small percentage of your overall video content creation.

7. Be honest: Avoid over-generalizations or grandiose claims.

The only thing worse than underwhelming guests with your properties and service? Setting high expectations and underdelivering in reality. Throughout your production, ask yourself: Does this paint an accurate picture of our hotel(s)? Of course, you should put your best foot forward, but don’t show a continental breakfast spread if that’s not included with every stay.

In the highly-competitive hospitality industry, reputation is everything; negative experiences result in up to four times as many bad reviews on TripAdvisor. Creating a hotel video with misleading claims or inaccurate information will damage your hotel brand — and fast.

For busy event planners, this is a huge faux pas they won’t forget anytime soon. Planners value clear and accurate communication from a prospective venue partner.

8. Include a clear and prominent call to action.

Viewers who enjoyed your video enough to stay to the end appreciate clear next-steps. For videos, that means a call to action (CTA) in on-screen text, as well as from the on-air host or voiceover narrator.

  • Create ad overlays for your videos. To create these free ad overlays you simply need a YouTube channel and Google Ads account linked to the channel. The ad should be straightforward, including a link to your website and a line of copy that lets the viewer know what’s in it for them. For example, videos targeted to event planners may include a link to a downloadable guide to the hotel’s various venues. For videos directed to solo business travelers, the link may take them to a booking page.
  • Create clickable annotations. Incorporate simple annotations into your YouTube video encouraging people to “Explore More” by visiting your hotel website. For a video targeting corporate planners, this annotation would link to your event venue landing page.
  • Use natural and upbeat language. This gets the best results, whether it’s in on-screen text, voiceover or an on-air host. “Visit www.ourhotel.com is a lackluster CTA, for example. But “Discover our weekend getaway packages” may inspire a clickthrough.

9. Create a virtual reality tour.

Today, it doesn’t take advanced equipment to create a virtual reality tour of your hotel that provides 360-degree views of guest rooms, the lobby, the pool, and event venues. You can create a detailed tour with a smartphone and Google Tour Creator .

When marketing to event planners, you can intersperse the tours with varied 3D event layouts . This demonstrates to planners that you’ll work with them to create a layout that meets the needs of their meeting or conference.

10. Add videos to your overall content marketing and advertising campaigns.

Make sure the messaging and style of your videos matches the branding of your hotel and your overall marketing strategy . Then add videos to marketing campaigns across channels. Ideas include:

A marketing email aimed at event planners. The video can feature a professional video of venue spaces at your nationwide properties.

Sharing videos on social media platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

A blog post including a video of the hotel chef cooking a favorite seasonal recipe.

Providing videos to influencers and affiliate marketers as part of your branded content resources.

And, of course, sharing videos on your hotel YouTube channel.

11. Optimize your videos so people can find them.

Whether posted on your website or YouTube, you need to use keywords so your video shows up when people search those words. Here’s a primer on video search optimization best practices:

  • Research a target keyword to guide your video title and video file. Use a keyword tool, such as those offered by Moz or Google Ads, and search words related to the subject of the video.
  • Front-load the first 100 characters of your video description with your targeted keyword and a call to action.
  • Tag your video with the keyword, so YouTube understands its content and matches it to real-world searches.
  • Choose an appropriate, high-performing category for your video. This helps YouTube figure out who might be interested in your video. Some of the top categories include: entertainment, food, gaming, sports, and travel.
  • Upload an engaging custom thumbnail closely related to the video title (Make sure it’s 2MB or smaller, which translates to a .jpg, .gif, .png, or .bmp file sized 1280x720 pixels).
  • Transcribe your video and repurpose the content into a blog post.

Video: A Look Inside Sweden's Icehotel 365

The northern stretch of Scandinavia is home to a series of extremes. In the summer, day doesn’t actually follow night—an everlasting sun keeps the nights warm and window shades drawn. And then there are the punishing winters: From November to February, frozen nights stretch on and on, punctuated ever so briefly by a weak imitation of dawn. To brave this gloomy period, the Norrlanders light a superabundance of candles and keep a saucepan of glogg —mulled wine with nuts and raisins—simmering on their stovetops.

About 20 years ago, artist Arne Bergh left his sculpture studio outside of Stockholm for a trip north, to the annual Snow Festival in Kiruna in the heart of Sweden’s Lapland. When he arrived, he was invited to check out a building called the Icehotel in the nearby town of Jukkasjärvi. A handful of craftspeople were building hotel rooms with ice and snow, and they invited him to try his hand at ice sculpture.

“I carved in ice for the first time, and I was fascinated by the material,” Bergh told me when we met in Jukkasjärvi this past December. He found that he was able to “sketch in the material, to actually work out thoughts. Working in this ephemeral material is like going back to nature.”

Following this experience, Bergh returned to Jukkasjärvi every winter to play with ideas in ice before committing them to wood and metal. With every trip, his attachment to this new way of working grew stronger and he was soon a key member of the Icehotel’s design team. Finally, in 1996, he became a part owner of the company, and he’s been the creative director ever since.

During his tenure, the Icehotel has grown from a handful of bedrooms in ice and snow to a complex with dozens of seasonal with traditional brick and mortar rooms, a frozen dining room, and—ironically?—a sauna . The hotel also boasts activities like cross-country skiing and husky rides along the Torne river and across a frozen lake. The “point” of the Icehotel for Bergh, however, remains the satisfaction he gets from cutting, chiseling, assembling, and sculpting with ice.

Every year, he also gets to advise and teach younger artists who are commissioned to work on new rooms for the hotel. Dozens of creative people, from all over the world and with wide-ranging professional backgrounds, submit proposals for the Icehotel’s seasonal rooms and Bergh selects the lucky few who will come to Jukkasjarvi to turn their ideas into structurally sound realities in a few short weeks.

When I walked through this year’s seasonal rooms, guests were due to arrive in a few days, and there were still walls to be built, friezes to be sculpted, and lighting designs to be finalized. Despite the ticking clock, there was no lack of camaraderie, mostly owing to Arne. He studied each block of ice, inspected the smallest details, and marveled at the imaginative leaps the artists had taken. One room, titled “Into The Maelstrom,” evoked the eye of a tumultuous storm in slippery white rivulets that swirled around the bed and disappeared into an illuminated hole in the ceiling. In another, an artist proudly brandished a small pickaxe of his own design to excavate eye sockets from an enormous bust. And all of this is temporary: The rooms will last only a few months before being melting down, and running off into the Torne.

This year, Arne and his team have expanded their project to include a permanent building called Icehotel 365 . The warehouse-like space houses 20 ice rooms that remain frozen all-year round, plus a gallery and an Ice Bar. I asked Arne if the permanence of these rooms doesn’t somewhat clash with his vision of sustainability and harmony with the surrounding Lapland. “In some ways, yes, but the building is sustainable: It is powered entirely by solar panels. And it offers us another opportunity to work with contrasts.”

The extremes of the region should be the primary draw for visitors, says Arne, and my experience bore this out. For the few days I was up north, everything was surprising: The darkness demanded intense concentration and watchfulness. The cold air was sharp but it was also fresh and invigorating. I rode on a creaking wooden sled behind a team of 10 huskies through a white muted landscape that was almost too beautiful to believe. And not far away, at the Abisko National Park, I saw the Northern Lights.

Then there was the Icehotel itself—or, as Bergh likes to call it, “an art gallery you sleep in.” It feels like much more than that.

Police deploy pepper spray as Netanyahu protesters converge on Capitol

WASHINGTON − A crowd chanting "free Palestine,” “stop bombing Gaza,” and “Netanyahu you can’t hide” gathered Wednesday outside the U.S. Capitol building to protest the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and to discourage Congress from further funding Israel's war in Gaza.

As the demonstration grew, Capitol Police deployed pepper spray to some of the protesters, saying "part of the crowd has started to become violent." Outside Union Station, demonstrators burned at least one U.S. flag and replaced the ones flying at Columbus Circle with Palestinian flags before authorities removed those.

Netanyahu began addressing a joint session of Congress a few minutes after 2 p.m. ET Wednesday, getting a warm reception from the legislators in attendance, though dozens boycotted his appearance.

The invitation to speak, extended by House Speaker Mike Johnson, had drawn criticism from those outraged by Israel's invasion of Gaza, which health authorities there say has killed almost 40,000 residents of the battered enclave.

Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein spoke to a crowd that stretched for several blocks in front of the Capitol, one of multiple protests against Netanyahu and the war across Washington. Stein, in a comment directed at lawmakers, said, “How dare you invite this criminal,” and called for a cease-fire.“We will free Palestine together,” she said to a roar of cheers and applause from a crowd in the thousands.

Rama Kased, a 44-year-old Bay Area resident and member of the U.S. Palestinian Community Network, told USA TODAY Wednesday night that a crowd of pro-Palestinian protesters were holding a "noise demonstration" outside of Watergate Hotel, where Netanyahu was staying.

Kased said she flew to Washington D.C. for the protest to show Netanyahu and others "complicit in the genocide on Palestine" that they were not welcome in the U.S.

"I think they got the message," Kased said.

Photos and videos posted to social media showed a sketch of Netanyahu’s face projected onto the hotel building Wednesday night, accompanied with the words: “WANTED” and “ARREST WAR CRIMINAL NETANYAHU," as protesters waved Palestinian flags and played music.

The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed road closures near the Watergate Hotel were still in place late Wednesday, but streets around the Capitol were open.

Protesters at Capitol: Target Netanyahu address to Congress

Developments:

∎ The crowd erupted in cheers when speakers thanked Democratic lawmakers who decided not to attend Netanyahu’s speech. Among those absent were former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, fellow congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senators Bernie Sanders, Patty Murray and Dick Durbin. Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, was not in attendance either, citing a previous commitment.

∎ U.S. Palestinian Community Network Chair Hatem Abudayyeh told USA TODAY a crowd of roughly 1,500 demonstrators rallied in Chicago’s Federal Plaza Wednesday afternoon in solidarity with the Washington D.C. protest.

∎ Organizers on a stage outside the Capitol said at least six nearby intersections were “occupied” by protesters.

Protesters pepper-sprayed outside Capitol, arrested inside

USA TODAY reporters counted at least 10 demonstrators who were pepper-sprayed as law enforcement officers cleared the intersection of First Street and Constitution Avenue across from the Capitol because of what police called violent behavior. Groups of protesters poured water on the eyes and faces of those who were pepper-sprayed.

"The crowd failed to obey our order to move back from our police line,'' Capitol Police said on the X platform . "We are deploying pepper spray towards anyone trying to break the law and cross that line.''

Police also said six demonstrators were removed from the House Gallery and arrested after disrupting Netanyahu's speech. "Disrupting the Congress and demonstrating in the Congressional Buildings is against the law,'' a police posting said .

Flag, statues vandalized at Union Station Plaza

Several hundred protesters gathered in the early afternoon at Union Station Plaza, just a short walk from the Capitol, and some of them replaced American flags flying there with Palestinian ones. Witnesses said at least one of the American flags was burned.

Demonstrators also spray-painted “FREE GAZA” on multiple statues in the square, also known as Columbus Circle, as well over 100 police officers guarded the station. A couple of hours later, the Palestinian flags were brought down.

The U.S. Park Police posted a statement on social media before 4 p.m. ET warning a crowd at the plaza was "engaged in criminal activity and confronting law enforcement.'' Later, as agitators yelled at police, a subsequent statement said the gathering's permit had been revoked and urged protesters to leave.

The Metropolitan Police Department said late Wednesday that officers arrested a total of nine protesters – five for blocking traffic, two for assaulting an officer, and two for crossing a police line.

Hours after Netanyahu finished his speech, a crowd of more than 100 demonstrators continued chanting “End the occupation now” and “Bibi out of D.C. now” in John Marshall Park, just east of the Capitol. Most protesters were clad in red shirts and black-and-white keffiyehs, the head coverings known as a symbol of the Palestinian struggle. The size of the crowd had dwindled greatly by 5:30 p.m. ET.

Protesters traveling from Georgia, Illinois

Stein spoke at a rally organized by the anti-war group ANSWER Coalition along with several partner groups. ANSWER coordinated buses to transport protesters from as far as Illinois and Atlanta for the demonstration, according to its website. The group encouraged attendees to wear red to form a "red line" around the Capitol building.

Another protest was organized by UnXeptable, a pro-Israel, anti-Netanyahu movement of Israelis founded in the San Francisco Bay Area, according to the group’s website.

Police officers from multiple agencies patrolled the area around the Capitol, and a helicopter flew overhead as the crowd, led by various speakers, chanted and waved Palestinian flags and signs.

Father of Israeli hostage: Netanyahu is a 'criminal' and 'traitor'

Yehuda Cohen has a personal stake in his nonstop advocacy for an immediate ceasefire, the end of the Israeli occupation of Gaza and the return of Israeli hostages. Cohen’s son, Nimrod Cohen, 20, a soldier with the Israeli military, was captured in the early hours of Oct. 7 as he rushed toward the Gaza border to repel Hamas’ attack.

To Cohen, one man stands between him and his son’s return home – Netanyahu. "I think he's a criminal," Cohen said at Wednesday's rally near the Capitol. "He's a traitor."

Cohen said he asked Netanyahu what Hamas was demanding in exchange for the hostages' return during a meeting with the prime minister in Jerusalem several months ago. Netanyahu said Hamas wanted Palestinian prisoners released, a withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and safe passage for Palestinians back to northern Gaza. "I said, 'OK, what's the big deal?'" Cohen said.

More than nine months into the war, an agreement to free the hostages has not be reached.

Protester from Richmond: 'I had to show up'

David Snead, 46, took the day off work and joined a group of ANSWER protesters on a bus from Richmond, Va., to have his voice heard. Snead, who has not attended any protests since the war broke out, said it’s “unconscionable” that Netanyahu was invited to speak before lawmakers.

Snead, referencing the International Criminal Court prosecutor requesting arrest warrants for Netanyahu and other top Israel and Hamas officials on charges of war crimes, said Netanyahu should appear at the ICC court in The Hague, not in front of lawmakers at the Capitol.

“When I saw he would be here, I knew I had to show up,” the bookkeeper said. “It’s so great to see hundreds of other people like me, workers who took the day off, to show Netanyahu and the U.S. government that we don’t support this genocide.”

Demonstrator hopes protests spur resolution

Yoram Ariely, 81, said he was at the UnXeptable rally to advocate for the end of the war, progress toward a two-state solution and for right-wing “extremists” in Israel’s government to leave the country. Ariely, who is Israeli, drove five hours to Philadelphia from his home in upstate New York and hopped a train from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. He felt obligated to contribute in solidarity with his native country.

“So many friends of mine in Israel are protesting every week,” he said. Ariely said Netanyahu puts his self interest ahead of all else. The prime minister is trying “to save his skin at the expense of the whole country,” he said.

“The massacre in Gaza … is horrible,” he said. The widespread protests in support of Gaza “might change the direction that the U.S. government and president are taking,” he added. “Maybe they'll exert more pressure on Israel to come to some sort of a solution.”

Susan Sarandon: Don't normalize genocide

Actresses Susan Sarandon, speaking at the ANSWER rally, called on people “to reject the normalization of genocide.” She read off a list of death tolls of health care workers, journalists and U.N. staff.

“We hear you and will raise your voices,” she and the crowd said in unison to the people in Gaza.

Sarandon has been outspoken against the war in Gaza for months. Last year, she was dropped from a Hollywood talent agency after speaking at a pro-Palestinian rally.

Israeli expats rally against 'Bibi'

A small group of demonstrators holding Israeli flags and chanting “Bibi, Bibi, bring them home,” and “Netanyahu’s got to go,” gathered at a park north of the Capitol building on Wednesday afternoon. The protest was organized by UnXeptable, a pro-Israel, anti-Netanyahu movement of Israelis founded in the San Francisco area, according to the group’s website. The group called on “all who care about Israel’s future as a liberal and democratic state” to declare Netanyahu “persona non grata,” demonstrators wrote online. Protesters also demanded the release of Israeli prisoners still held by Hamas in Gaza and the end of the “divisiveness, culture of corruption and fear-mongering,” perpetrated by Netanyahu, according to the group.

Protester: Gaza war is 'in no one's interest'

Conor Hammonds and his mother, Jackie Dyer, drove from Baltimore to D.C. to protest the war in Gaza and the way Netanyahu and the U.S. government have handled the conflict. Hammond’s sister worked in Gaza for two years with Catholic Relief Services and left months before the war broke out, though she still has close friends in the bombarded enclave.

Dyer said the U.S. government’s support of Israel’s far-right government is a “desecration of what this country stands for.” The two said they hope for a cease fire in Gaza and an arms embargo on Israel.

“This war is in no one’s interest,” Dyer, 63, said.

The protests began Tuesday, when Capitol Police said about 200 demonstrators were arrested for "crowding, obstructing or incommoding" inside the Cannon House Office Building. Protesters demonstrated outside Netanyahu's hotel Tuesday night, chanting, waving Palestinian flags and projecting an image of Netanyahu onto the building captioned with the words "WANTED" and "ARREST NETANYAHU."

Rabbi group, Israeli expats hold separate protests

A group called T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights, held a prayer service and protest Wednesday morning near Union Station in downtown Washington. The "spiritual, soulful, and song-full prayer space" was also a call for an end to the war, a release of all hostages, and an end to the occupation, the group said on its website .

UnXeptable, an organization of Israeli expatriates, was holding a protest on Capitol Hill at noon. "Netanyahu represents a danger to the state, to its democracy, to the hostages and to peace in the entire region," the group said on its website .

Some congressional interns show solidarity

A "diverse coalition" of more than 100 interns anonymously signed a letter denouncing Netanyahu's visit.

"As interns, we are united in our moral and ethical concerns regarding Prime Minister Netanyahu’s actions and policies in Gaza," says the letter, which accused Netanyahu of "obstructing ceasefire negotiations, hindering humanitarian aid, and targeting civilian infrastructure." It blames his policies for the "catastrophic humanitarian crises."

Nation's capital increases security, closes roads

Capitol Police, charged with safeguarding Congress and its buildings, closed roads around the U.S. Capitol and added more officers, including from outside agencies, to patrol and monitor the crowds. Police said in a statement they expected a big crowd and warned that it is illegal to attempt to cross an established police line or barrier.

"The department respects everyone’s First Amendment rights, however all demonstrations must be done peacefully and legally," Capitol Police said in a statement.

The Metropolitan Police Department, which serves the city, also announced road closures, limited public parking and tightened security through most of the week. Some public tours have been rerouted and police have warned of traffic delays, citing the "dignitary visit."

NYPD sends officers to help with DC protests

More than 200 New York City police officers have been sent to Washington to help provide security during the protests. NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said the NYPD providing some of its most highly trained officers at the request of Capitol police.

"These officers ... will use their knowledge and expertise to assist our law enforcement partners in DC," Chell said in a social media post. "No matter the task, no matter the assignment, no matter how far from home, your NYPD will answer the call and ensure the public is safe and that democracy is protected.

200 arrested in protest on eve of Netanyahu address

On Tuesday, a few hundred members of the group  Jewish Voice for Peace  descended on the rotunda of the Cannon House office building to protest the war and demand a cease-fire. The demonstrators chanted slogans and had signs with messages such as "Jews to Congress: Stop Arming Israel'' and "Let Gaza Live.''

In a string of social media posts, the group said it refused to "sit by as our government facilitates and defends" Israel's war.

"As the daily horrors against Palestinians in Gaza escalate, so too will our resolve and commitment to stand with Palestinians," the post said. "We continue to demand: STOP ARMING ISRAEL!"

Capitol police said in a statement that demonstrations are not allowed inside congressional buildings.

"We told the people, who legally entered, to stop or they would be arrested," the statement said. "They did not stop, so we are arresting them."

Labor unions petition White House demanding peace

Seven labor unions totaling millions of members sent a letter Tuesday to the White House demanding a truce in Gaza and for the U.S. to stop supplying weapons to Israel. The signatories included the Association of Flight Attendants, American Postal Workers Union, International Union of Painters, National Education Association, Service Employees International Union, United Electrical Workers and United Auto Workers.

The United Auto Workers is based in Michigan, home to the biggest percentage and second largest number of Arab Americans in the country. Michigan is also considered one of a handful of crucial "swing states" that could tip the 2024 presidential election.

"Workers, students, and people from all walks of life will be at the Capitol (on Wednesday) to issue a warrant of arrest to war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu," the group said in a social media post. "We will see you there! Don't miss this!"

In addition, several aid groups and other organizations have partnered to launch a mobile billboard that will drive around Washington on Wednesday with the message: “No more bombs for Netanyahu.”

It may be tempting to pull the breaks on marketing at a time like this, but if you can maintain your efforts in this department, then you’ll reap the benefits once things get better.

Plus, there are so many possibilities with this type of content: you could create promotional hotel videos or record customer testimonials via video conferencing tools.

You can then showcase the content on your website or share it with your audience on social media. The distribution and repurposing options are endless.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Thousands of protesters against the war in Gaza converged on Washington on Wednesday to condemn Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit , chanting “Free, free Palestine” as they marched toward the Capitol before police deployed pepper spray on some in the crowd.

Demonstrators calling for an end to the war that has killed more than 39,000 Palestinians filled several blocks as they weaved through the streets of the nation’s capital carrying Palestinian flags and signs with messages such as “arrest Netanyahu” and “end all U.S. aid to Israel.” Outside Washington’s Union Station, protesters removed American flags and hoisted Palestinian ones in their place to massive cheers in the crowd.

“Bibi, Bibi, We’re not done! The intifada has just begun!” protesters shouted, referring to Netanyahu by his nickname. “Netanyahu, you can’t hide. You’re committing genocide,” other protesters shouted.

Throngs of demonstrators rallied near the Capitol before starting their march ahead of Netanyahu’s joint address to Congress, but police blocked them from getting close to the building. Police said they used pepper spray after some protesters became “violent” and “failed to obey” orders to move back from the police line.

Before Netanyahu’s speech, some protesters tried to block his route to the Capitol but were removed from the street by police. After being turned away by officers near the Capitol, protesters wound through the Capitol Hill neighborhood for several blocks before gathering in front of the nearby rail station.

AP correspondent Norman Hall reports Israeli Prime Minister’s Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington is being marked by protests against the war in Gaza.

Nine people were arrested across Washington, including four people on charges of assaulting a police officer outside Union Station.

Outside of Union Station, protesters shouted, “Let them go!” at officers who formed a circle around several people who were arrested. One person grabbed at a police officer’s riot shield and then raised his fists in a fighting stance. An officer was seen grabbing a Palestinian flag from a woman and tossing it aside. At least one protester appeared to be overcome from the effects of pepper spray.

Cheers rang out as a fire burned what appeared to be a papier-mache likeness of Netanyahu. Protesters spray painted graffiti on a monument to Christopher Columbus, including the words, “Hamas is coming” in large red letters. “Free Gaza” was scrawled in green.

Among the protesters was a group of artists from Baltimore displaying a massive papier-mache sculpture meant to depict President Joe Biden with blood on his hands and devil horns.

Mary Kaileh, a Palestinian woman who moved to the U.S. from the West Bank 17 years ago and now lives in Baltimore, said her people have been ignored and mistreated for decades. She’s not convinced protests will change anything in terms of convincing American politicians to act, but she wasn’t about to stay home.

“I love it, but I don’t see the effects of it,” she said.

While many of the demonstrators have condemned Israel, others have expressed support while pressing Netanyahu to strike a cease-fire deal in the war with Hamas and bring home the hostages still being held by the militant group.

Many Jewish Americans view the war in Gaza as just because it came in response to the brutal Oct. 7 Hamas attack, even if they don’t outright support Netanyahu and his policies. The families of hostages taken by Hamas are also protesting, demanding Netanyahu agree to a cease-fire deal that would free their loves ones.

Capitol Police said in a post on X that six people who “disrupted” Netanyahu’s address were removed from the House gallery and arrested.

“Disrupting the Congress and demonstrating in the congressional buildings is against the law,” police said.

During Netanyahu’s speech, five people wearing yellow T-shirts that read “seal the deal now” were removed from the gallery. The phrase is a rallying cry for those urging Netanyahu to reach a deal to return the hostages. The individuals stood to prominently display the message on their shirts during moments when others were applauding but had done nothing to disrupt the speech itself.

Police significantly boosted security around the Capitol and closed multiple roads for most of the week. Workers erected a metal fence around the White House on Wednesday morning while tall steel barriers ringed the Capitol.

Dozens of protesters rallied outside Netanyahu’s hotel Monday evening after his arrival in Washington, and on Tuesday afternoon, hundreds of demonstrators staged a flashmob-style protest in the Cannon building, which houses offices of House members.

The Capitol Police said about 200 people were arrested Tuesday on charges stemming from the sit-in at the Cannon building. Jewish Voice for Peace, which organized the protest, said many more than that were arrested, rabbis among them.

After about a half-hour of protesters’ clapping and chanting, officers from the Capitol Police issued several warnings, then began arresting demonstrators — binding their hands with zip ties and leading them away one by one.

Families of some of the remaining hostages held a protest vigil Tuesday evening on the National Mall, demanding that Netanyahu come to terms with Hamas and bring home the approximately 120 Israeli hostages remaining in Gaza.

Biden and Netanyahu are expected to meet Thursday, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity before a White House announcement. Vice President Kamala Harris will also meet Netanyahu separately that day.

Harris, as Senate president, would normally sit behind foreign leaders addressing Congress, but she will be away Wednesday, on an Indianapolis trip scheduled before Biden withdrew his reelection bid, which made her the likely Democratic presidential candidate.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said on Truth Social that he would meet with Netanyahu on Friday.

Associated Press writers Olla Mokhtar, Olivia Diaz, Michael Kunzelman and Lea Skene contributed to this report.

What’s the cheapest Hawaiian island to visit?

Hawaii isn’t known as a cheap destination, but if you’re set on visiting the Aloha state, choosing the right island can make a big difference in the cost of your trip. If you’re looking to save on a trip to Hawaii, head to the island of Oahu.

Of the four main Hawaiian islands for tourism — Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island — Oahu is the cheapest Hawaiian island to visit by multiple metrics. Oahu has the lowest daily average hotel room rate of the islands and the lowest average daily spending per tourist, according to May 2024 data from the Hawai’i Tourism Authority.

The cost of hotel rooms on Oahu

Though the average room rate in May 2024 across all of Hawaii was $342, Oahu hotel rooms average about 21% less, coming in at $272. That translates to about $70 per night less than the average.

In a breakdown of average daily room rates in May 2024 by island, Oahu shines.

One reason for Oahu’s lowest average room rate? The island also has the biggest supply. In fact, Oahu had more than double the number of hotel room nights than Maui, the next closest contender.

Even when broken down by hotel class, Oahu still has the most affordable room rates across every level, from economy and midscale to luxury options.

Midscale and economy rooms in Oahu cost $151 per night on average. That’s 30% less than the average price for the same class of room across the entire state. And if you have a penchant for the finer things in life, you’ll save on Oahu, too. In fact, you could save about $223 per night by choosing to vacation at a luxury hotel in Oahu versus Maui .

Oahu, like other islands, offers opportunities to book stays using hotel points and credit card rewards. For example, Oahu is the only island with a Hampton Inn & Suites outpost, a midscale brand where you can redeem Hilton Honors points — and avoid pesky resort fees on award bookings.

One of Oahu’s most famous luxury hotels, the historic Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort & Spa, Waikiki Beach, can be booked using Marriott Bonvoy points. Those can be earned through Marriott credit cards as well as general travel credit cards that accrue points that transfer to Marriott .

On the other side of the island sits another famous property, Turtle Bay Resort. The luxury hotel will soon become a Marriott property when it’s rebranded as The Ritz-Carlton O’ahu, Turtle Bay in August 2024.

The cost of activities on Oahu

More goes into a vacation budget than just a hotel. There’s food, tours, ground transportation and souvenirs. And once again, travelers arriving by air spend less per day on Oahu than any other island.

Across all trip expenditures (including lodging), Oahu is the best bargain in average daily spending per person in May 2024, according to a separate study by the Hawai’i Tourism Authority.

So why is spending on Oahu lower than on other islands? Not only are there more hotels, but also more restaurants and other types of businesses. According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data, Honolulu County in Oahu had more than 21,000 businesses in 2020, while Maui County in Maui had fewer than 5,000. The increased competition lowers prices for consumers.

There’s also just a lot of free and cheap stuff to do on Oahu . Many of the top activities — including visiting the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, lounging on Waikiki Beach and hiking the Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail — are free. It costs just $5 per person to enter Diamond Head State Monument (though it’s an additional $10 for parking).

And because of Honolulu’s robust bus network and walkability, it’s easy to get around Honolulu without a rental car . For places more difficult to get to, it’s possible to rent a car for just a day or rely on rideshare services like Uber or Lyft.

There are plenty of ways to save on a Hawaiian vacation. Start by finding affordable flights to Hawaii’s cheapest island, Oahu. The higher concentration of hotels and businesses means more affordable options.
