Around an hour's drive from Miami on Florida's  southern tip, Everglades National Park offers 1.5 million acres of natural wonder. Covering an area the size of Rhode Island , this complex and vital ecosystem of wetlands, swamps, mangroves and forests is North America 's  biggest protected sub-tropical wilderness reserve.

Teeming with wildlife such as alligators, crocodiles, manatees and birds, the park is laced with hiking and biking trails, dotted with campsites and has waterways navigable by kayak, canoe and boat. On any given day, you can hear airboats whizzing by, wading birds splashing about and fishing rods whirling in the wind as they're cast. In the park's more silent and serene nooks, you're likely to hear nothing at all.

Amid the awe, however, there are plenty of ways to get the most out of your trip here. Having lived nearby for nearly a decade, guiding friends and families deep into the Everglades, I've gotten to know a few dos and don'ts, tricks and tips. Here's everything you need to know before you visit Everglades National Park.

1. Avoid the "snowbird season" crowds

There's a joke in South Florida from the fall through early spring (October–March): the leaves don't change, but the colors of the car license plates do. That's because while the rest of the Eastern USA is freezing, Florida remains warm, so travelers – known locally as snowbirds – migrate down here for the cooler months. Expect the Everglades National Park to be particularly busy during this time.

The best way to avoid the crowds in the Everglades is to get up early during the summer months (June–August) and visit in the morning. Note that the park is often muggy by noon, and temperatures regularly reach at least 90°F (32°C).

2. There are four entrances to the park, so find the best one for your journey

The Everglades only has four entrances . Two are in Homestead: the Flamingo Visitor Center, which is a gateway to an extensive network of canoeing facilities; and the Royal Palm, which is primed for walking adventures. The latter also has several paved and well-packed dirt trails nearby. 

The other two entry points are found west of Miami. Shark Valley is the busiest and is known for its gator-surrounded, 15-mile bike trail; the Gulf Coast Visitor Center in Everglades City, meanwhile, attracts fewer people. It is primarily a gateway for boating and exploring the nearby series of mangrove islands. Depending on where you are traveling from in Florida and the traffic levels, it can take hours to drive between each park entrance, so plan wisely.

3. To access most of the Everglades, you'll need an airboat

Airboats – flat-bottomed watercraft with giant fan propellers at the back – aren't just kitschy tourist vehicles for gawking at gators. They are actually vital in delicately navigating the wet prairies, both in terms of helping preserve the vegetation and avoiding debris that would otherwise damage a fishing boat. Should you want to plan an excursion, there are three authorized airboat businesses in the park itself that provide services: Coopertown Airboats , Everglades Safari Park and Gator Park .

4. Snag a permit ahead of time if you want to fish solo

The Everglades are a mix of saltwater and freshwater landscapes, equating to a fishing utopia. When fishing independently, you'll need a license for both saltwater and freshwater fishing – two separate permits in Florida that you obtain from the Florida Fishing and Wildlife Conservation Commission . Cell service is extremely limited in the park, so save a potential headache by registering for the right license online ahead of your visit. If you are embarking on a chartered journey, your captain should already have a license, but check beforehand.

5. Support and book excursions with local tribes

The Calusa, Tequesta, Seminole and Miccosukee tribes all have deep roots in the Everglades region. Along the Tamiami Trail (US Hwy 41), you'll see a number of Miccosukee destinations – notably the Miccosukee Casino & Resort , as well as the Miccosukee Village and Airboat Rides . At the village, there is a museum where you can learn more about the tribe and tour exhibits of their earliest clothing, tools and beadwork.  

6. Don't bring pets – they're not allowed on the trails 

What do the popular Otter Cave Hammock Trail , Rowdy Bend Trail and Gumbo Limbo Trail have in common aside from awesome names? You can't bring your pets with you… or on any of the walking trails in Everglades National Park. Besides, they probably wouldn't fare too well with a camouflaged gator anyway. 

7. Opt for an ethical animal sanctuary

The Everglades has a number of wildlife sanctuaries, but not all are animal-friendly, so do your research before visiting. Aside from spotting blue herons in their natural environment along the Anhinga Trail or manatees coasting in the Florida Bay , Everglades Outpost is an ethical option if you want an up-close encounter . The nonprofit rehabilitates injured gators, reptiles and more from the nearby land before releasing them back into the environment.

8. Give wild animals their space

If you do have an encounter with a manatee in the open waters or a gator quietly lurking in the mangroves, leave them alone. Refrain from feeding the animals, and if there is a visibly sick or young creature with parents nearby, tread lightly as their defense mechanisms may kick in. Additionally, bird nests – for the likes of wood storks and herons – are a common sight. Let those be, too.

9. Yes, there is a Cold War missile site in the park that you can visit

Constructed after the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early 1960s, the HM69 Nike Missile Base was once a hub for protecting the US against a possible attack by the Soviet Union. The site has three missile barns, an assembly building, barracks and two missiles today. The Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center   runs tours from December through March.

10. The Everglades is vital to the entire state, so help where you can

As well as being home to endangered or threatened species, such as the Florida Panther and West Indian Manatee, the Everglades provides drinking water for more than eight million Floridians. When you visit, remember that your actions – and what you may leave behind – have a lasting impact.

11. Please, please, please bring sunscreen and sun gear

Too many tourists and locals that let their guards down do it every year; they forget their sunscreen and sun gear and end up looking like a painful ripe tomato in the ensuing days. Pack more than enough sunscreen and protective gear like hats, sunglasses and sun-protective shirts for your adventure, and set a timer for reapplying sunscreen. Whether canoeing the Flamingo District or birdwatching Paurotis Pond , you'll need it. 

12. Don't swim in the water and keep your limbs inside boats

It's the same mantra in every national park: don't touch the wildlife. Well, that notion comes in various forms in Everglades National Park. During the scorching summer months, it can be incredibly tempting to take a quick dip in seemingly calm waters, but just remember that there may be alligators, crocodiles, snakes, reptiles and more lurking in the waters. In the same vein and as any guide will tell you, keep those limbs inside the airboats. The wildlife will generally leave you alone, so long as it's reciprocal.

Is a Florida Everglades Day Trip from Miami Worth It?

Recently, my sister and I visited Miami Beach for a week. While we were there, we decided to explore one of the main attractions outside of the busy South Beach by taking a Florida Everglades day trip from Miami.

The day that we visited was beautiful and sunny, and we loved exploring this stunning place. I highly recommend checking it out if you are in the area. But first, you might be wondering, “What are the Everglades”?

What are the Everglades?

The Florida Everglades is located at the southern tip of Florida and is the largest wetland ecosystem in the United States. Despite the fact that a lot of people think that the Everglades are just a large marsh or swamp, it is actually a very slow-moving river filled with vegetation, which is why it’s sometimes called the River of Grass.

The Everglades is 60 miles (97 km) wide and over 100 miles (160 km) long. Of this, 1.5 million acres (twenty percent) form a national park. Everglades National Park has also been designated as an International Biosphere Reserve, a Wetland of International Importance, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Many animals call the Everglades their home, including panthers, crocodiles, alligators (smaller than crocs), turtles, and a ton of birds. The Everglades provide a habitat for many endangered species, which makes it one of the most important ecosystems in the country.

The best way to explore this natural wonder is to take a ride on an airboat.

Organized tour to the Everglades from Miami

While the Everglades is a great vacation destination for families and single people like me, Everglades National Park is two hours from Miami. It’s great that it’s a world heritage site, but who wants to spend half a day on the road? Especially when there’s a closer entry point.

Instead of renting a car for the day, we chose to take an organized tour. The one we chose takes you to the Everglades Holiday Park, which is about 45 minutes from South Beach.

ⓘ TIP: If you decide to book an Everglades tour (and you should!), choose it based on what part of the Everglades it goes to and how long the excursion lasts.

What to bring to the Florida Everglades?

Don’t forget to bring some sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sun hat, as it will most likely be sunny and hot. We went in March, and it was 30 degrees Celsius (86°F). Also, bring a lot of water to drink.

In terms of shoes, it doesn’t really matter in this case, because you will be on the bus and then on the boat. I wore my running shoes.

Wear clothes that will help you stay cool and breezy. I wore denim shorts with a crop top shirt, and I was pretty comfortable. Bring a small day pack to put all your stuff in. I had a fanny pack (bum bag), and my sister wore a backpack that held most of our stuff.

Also, don’t forget your ticket for the trip – you can print it out or show it digitally. I had a version of both.

Tour schedule for our Everglades day trip from Miami

The Everglades day trip uses a coach-style bus and has two pick-up locations only. The first one is in Soundscape Park/Lincoln Road which was located two minutes from our Airbnb (super convenient). Bayside Marketplace is the second pick-up location. So, there is one stop on Miami Beach (the island) and one in Miami City (mainland).

Unlike the Miami Big Bus Hop-on/Hop-off tour , you won’t be hopping on and off this bus. They pick up tourists at each spot and then you head straight to the park.

Keep in mind there are only two departure times during the day (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) and you have to book in advance. There are tours going out every day.

The bus and ride

The bus was comfortable and the ride to Everglades Holiday Park was enjoyable. There were about 10 other travelers on the tour with us. Unfortunately, the bus driver was an hour late, which significantly decrease the amount of time we had at the Everglades. They did not give us an explanation or reason for this. So that was a bit frustrating.

Things to do at Everglades Holiday Park

Once we got to the park , we mounted one of the famous airboats. It is a very interesting-looking boat where the engine is strapped to the back.

That is most likely so that it doesn’t get tangled in the vegetation.

The Everglades airboat ride

The airboat ride lasted about half an hour. Our tour guide was extremely enthusiastic, which made it very interesting. He shared a lot of information about the local flora and fauna.

You should know that the airboat is really loud, especially when the driver goes full speed. There are no stops on the airboat tour; you remain on the boat the entire time. It is very safe as well, as in, the alligators are not going to jump at you or anything like that.

Vegetation in the Everglades

The primary type of vegetation you will find in the Everglades is sawgrass, which is native to Florida. It is lining much of the waterways in this area. You will also see the bladderwort (small yellow flower), orchids, succulents as well as a variety of grasses, lichen, and algae.

In terms of trees, there are many types of mangroves (including black mangroves and white mangroves), cypress (bald and pond cypress), pine trees, etc.

Everywhere you turn, there are plants and trees that you don’t usually see in other places. That is because they love the marshy landscape, and you can only see them thriving in wetlands.

Vulture Island

The first point of interest was Vulture Island where you can see two different types of vultures: the black vulture (fully black) and the turkey vulture (red-headed). We circled around with the airboat while our tour guide was telling us more about the inhabitants.

There were a lot of vultures in the trees, and we were able to get pretty close to them. I have never seen a vulture in real life, so I was amazed at how big they were.

Also, we saw a beautiful white egret walking through the water and looking for food.

As we continued getting further and further into the Everglades, we were finally able to spot an alligator. We actually ended up seeing a few swimming in the water. You can mainly see their eyes and a little bit of their face poking out of the water.

Our tour guide was able to get us pretty close to them and I was highly debating on taking one home. Just kidding – my dog would probably eat it!

We spend about 15 minutes driving around different areas trying to spot more alligators. I think we ended up seeing about four different ones. One of them, according to the tour guide, was close to 2 meters long.

On the way back, we saw an iguana lounging in a tree. I love seeing animals in their natural habitats, so this was a great experience.

Other animals that live in the Everglades

There are a lot of other animals that live in the Everglades that we didn’t end up spotting. Some of them are Burmese python, wood stork, Florida panther, American crocodile, manatees, frogs, turtles, fish, etc. A lot of the species are rare or endangered, so this habitat is crucial to their preservation.

Also, keep in mind the Everglades Park is enormous so getting to explore the whole thing is impossible in one day. Having said that, it is not guaranteed what animals you will see on your airboat tour. It also depends on which entrance you go through as well – there are 9 in total.

If you are staying in Miami, the Holiday Park will be the closest. If you enter from one of the other ones, you will probably have a similar experience but might see different animals on that day. However, it is estimated that over 200, 000 alligators live in the Everglades, so your chance of spotting one is pretty good.

The alligator “show”

Once we got back, we went to watch an alligator show. The facilities here take in and rehabilitate any wildlife and then return them to the wild once recovered. However, some of them are not able to safely be introduced back into their natural habitat and they remain on the property.

When I say an alligator show, I don’t mean alligators jumping through hoops or anything like that. It’s pretty much a guy who sits in a pit with a bunch of alligators in it and tells the audience more about those amazing animals.

He was really funny, and it was a very enjoyable show, which lasted about 15 minutes. He kept laying beside the alligators, and petting and talking to them like they were people.

Facilities at the park

After the show, you can walk through an area where they have some of the other inhabitants, including two albino alligators as well as a few snakes. Also, there were a bunch of baby alligators, an albino raccoon along with two little foxes.

They offer an option to get a picture of yourself holding a baby alligator. Unfortunately, because as I said, our bus driver was late, we kind of rushed through this part.

Inside the building, there are restrooms and a large gift shop though we didn’t have time to explore as we had to head back to the bus.

Other things to do in the Everglades

There are other activities you can do in the Everglades, but you will need more time. Some of them are diving, hiking, camping, canoe/kayak tours, adventure tours, night tours, etc.

If you don’t have a lot of time and want to focus on the main thing, I recommend that you just do the airboat tour as we did.

Overall, it was a very interesting experience to see the beautiful Everglades which, by the way, are the only ones in the world. I was very excited about seeing the alligators as well as learning more about them and the other animals.

If you are anywhere near Miami or southern Florida, I highly recommend visiting the Florida Everglades and doing an airboat ride.

Nature Things to Do in Miami Florida

The city of Miami is surrounded by natural beauty, which makes it perfect for outdoor activities. Miami is one of the best places to visit if you are love the great outdoors, as the nature things to do in Miami are open almost every time of year because of our amazing subtropical weather.

The beach, the preserved parks, and the tropical jungle-like settings make it a prime destination for nature lovers. It is a perfect backdrop for the hilarious things to do in Miami, Florida. The city is full of several hotels and resorts. The best way to explore the feature is by getting out of it.

The town is famous for its delicate local cuisine as well. It offers a wide array of services, from golf courses to luxury hotels. Here are a few of the best natural things to do in Miami, Florida, together with some valuable tips to make your stay the most interesting one.

Barnacle Historic State Park 

When you are looking for outdoor things to do in Miami , and also love history, then a trip to visit Barnacle Historic State Park in Miami's Coconut Grove is in order! 

Barnacle Historic State Park is located at the shore of Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove , and was the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of founding pioneers of Coconut Grove. The property has three historic houses and is a great spot for history lovers and nature lovers, as a glimpse into the Era of the Bay that came to an end when the Florida East Coast Railroad arrived in 1896 and Miami became a city. It is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places . 

Barnacle Historic State Park  offers elegance, charm, and plenty of activities including tours, geo-caching, birding and picnic areas. The park is a great place to enjoy a fun day in one of Miami's oldest neighborhoods, Coconut Grove. 

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens

The gem that we locals refer to simply as "Fairchild," this is always at the top of my list of nature parks Miami because of how large it is and the variety of nature found there. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens, is located on the beautiful shores of picturesque Biscayne Bay and has a tropical garden filled with exotic flowers and plants. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens boasts one of the most extensive collection of orchids in the United States - if not the world. The gardens also have an extensive collection of tropical trees and palms and fountains. 

You can also enjoy bird watching, walking, and picnicking in these lush gardens. There is also a beautiful beach and an outdoor amphitheater which you can use to relax while admiring nature's splendor around you. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens also has an extensive array of special exhibits, which change seasonally. 

• Aquatic Exhibits - The Water Gardens at Fairchild Soak in the beauty of Fairchild’s 11 lakes and 7 pools, including the Sibley Victoria Pool.

Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park is situated in the southern third of Florida's mainland. The park is made of tropical forests, swamps, and wetlands. This park is a great place to experience feature at its best. The park hosts manatees, pelicans, alligators, and other exotic wildlife.

You can also ride a shuttle boat to observe the wildlife up close. The park is home to alligators, turtles, egrets, and other wildlife species. 

Everglades Alligator Farm

Everglades Alligator Farm is a unique attraction that offers everything from wildlife viewing to airboat rides to animal encounter shows!  Everglades Alligator Farm Airboat rides are a thrilling 20-25 minute ride into the Everglades. Located between Miami and the Florida Keys, airboat tours show off the spectacular scenery of the Everglades.

The alligator show is one of our most popular and entertaining aspects of the farm. Our expert handlers educate guests on all aspects of these creatures of the swamp.

During the alligator, snake and reptile shows, you can watch as the handlers display alligator capturing techniques once used by Native Americans. One the show is over, you can actually handle a baby alligator too! Don't worry - they tape the mouth closed and the handler is right there, so you don't have to worry about anyone getting hurt. They also have several alligator feedings throughout the day, when you can see and learn about how alligators feed in the wild.

Over 500 gators live in the Everglades Alligators Farm's breeding pond area, and there are trails around the park that you can walk and view them in their natural habitat. This was one of our favorite outdoor things to do in Miami when my daughter was little!

Monkey Jungle Miami

Monkey Jungle Miami is by far one of my favorite outdoor things to do in Miami - it is literally right down the street from the neighborhood where I was raised and still live. Monkey Jungle Miami is truly a unique eco-show park! If you love nature AND animals, this park and discovery center is going to be the highlight of your trip to Miami!

Established in 1935 in a natural subtropical forest in southern Miami-Dade County, the jungle wildlife at Monkey Jungle live as rich a life as they would in their native habitats. Your Jungle Guides take you deep into the forest for regularly scheduled shows, but you can also walk through the trails and explore the wildlife for yourself. 

The best part of Monkey Jungle is that YOU are the one in the cage, while the wildlife roam free all around you! It is truly a one of a kind experience that I have never seen outside of Miami. 

Redland Fruit and Spice Park

The Redland Fruit and Spice Park is one of the most unique and unknown nature parks Miami , suited for nature lovers who want a vacation filled with something new and different! The Redland Fruit & Spice Park is part of the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation & Open Spaces Department, and is the ONLY tropical botanical garden of its kind in the United States. There are over 500 varieties of fruits, vegetables, spices, herbs, and nuts within the park and botanical gardens. 

Redland Fruit and Spice Park is home to more than 50 species of tropical flowers, and is open year-round in ALL weather conditions - except for when there is lightning. If you aren't aware of this...Florida is actually the lightning strike capital OF THE WORLD! So, this might seem like an inconvenience but it is for your safety. 

There are picnic tables throughout the park and guests are welcome to bring a picnic basket!

You can learn about the kinds of fruits, nuts, and spices in the park. You can also learn about the different types of herbs used for flavoring purposes. The park also offers activities such as guided tours, pick-your-own apples or melons, and lunch. You can also sample some of the exotic recipes prepared from the fruits on sale in the store.

Oleta River State Park

Oleta River State Park is located in North Miami Beach, and at just over 1000 acres, it is actually Florida’s largest urban park! When you are looking for outdoor things to do in Miami , Oleta River State Park should be towards the top of your list!

It is a great place to enjoy nature, and it is the perfect spot for mountain bikers, paddlers, anglers and swimmers. The park offers plenty of activities, such as rollerblading, swimming, wildlife viewing, snorkeling, paddling, canoeing, and swimming - you can even go on fishing for the day with the family and set your own hook!

Oleta River State Park has a marina where you can rent boats or kayaks, giving you a first-hand experience of the park - it is part of the 1,515-mile Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail . The park is also home to one of Florida's finest golf courses, perfect for anyone who wants to play the game with nature.

Whether enjoying the 15 miles of off-road bicycling trails or paddling along lush mangrove forests, it can be shocking that Oleta River State Park is just 30 minutes from downtown Miami! You can download a map of the park along with a list of amenities here . 

The Miami Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science

Located in the northern part of Miami near Coconut Grove is the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science , now known as Frost Science , which offers an amazing experience for families. You can learn about science and technology and enjoy a beautiful view as you are surrounded by feature at its best!

Frost Museum offers different Exhibitions, an Aquarium, but locals know it best as the Planetarium. 

One of the most advanced spaces like it in the U.S., the cutting-edge 250-seat Frost Planetarium offers an immersive experience using a 16-million-color 8K visual system using six 3D-capable projectors and surround sound.

The Frost Science Dome is tilted forward at 23.5 degrees, allowing its 67-foot span to fill your field of vision as if you’re flying!
