About Eric Church

Eric Church’s most recent critically acclaimed and chart-topping project, his  Heart & Soul  triple album, is available everywhere now. Featuring the results of a marathon session during which he spent nearly a month writing and recording a song per day while sequestered in rural North Carolina, the trio features his latest Gold-certified No. 1 “Hell of a View” and recent Top 5 hit “Heart On Fire” as well as his latest single, “Doing Life With Me,” climbing the charts at Country radio now.

Just as unique as Church’s approach to recording and releasing music is his tenacity on the road. His latest outing, the 55-city  The Gather Again Tour ,   offered fans an in-the-round show and earned the  Billboard  Music Award for Top Country Tour. Church also performed one-of-a-kind headlining stadium shows at Milwaukee’s American Family Field and Minneapolis’s U.S. Bank Stadium in 2022 and took the field at Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium to perform the National Anthem with R&B star Jazmine Sullivan ahead of Super Bowl LV in 2021. During 2019’s  Double Down Tour  he played back-to-back nights of two unique shows in each market sans opening act, giving every city’s fans six-plus hours of his iconic music. The tour also featured a massive stop at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, where he broke the venue’s concert attendance record with more than 56,000 fans in attendance and became the first artist to sell out the venue with a solo lineup.

A seven-time ACM Award winner, four-time CMA Award winner (including the 2020 award for Entertainer of the Year) and 10-time GRAMMY nominee, Church has amassed a passionate fanbase around the globe known as the Church Choir as well as a critically acclaimed catalog of music. His previous project, the Gold-certified  Desperate Man , earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Album (his third nod in the category). Prior releases include the Platinum-certified  Sinners Like Me  (“How ’Bout You,” “Guys Like Me”) , Carolina  (“Smoke a Little Smoke,” “Love Your Love the Most”) and  Mr. Misunderstood  (“Record Year,” “Round Here Buzz”), the Double-Platinum certified  The Outsiders  (“Like a Wrecking Ball,” “Talladega”) and the 3x Platinum-certified  Chief  (“Springsteen,” “Drink In My Hand”) ,  as well as 30 Gold, Platinum and multi-Platinum certified singles.

Eric Church’s The Outsiders Revival Tour at Pine Knob Amphitheatre

the outsiders revival tour setlist 2023

Independence Township,Michigan (June 23,2023)- Eric Church throughout his career has been the standard for live performances in country music. In fact, he has been compared by many as being the Bruce Springsteen of the genre with his lengthy performances that often have segued into the early morning hours of the following day. Friday night at the Pine Knob Music Theatre there was no three hour music marathon but something new and invigorating from the man fondly known as “Chief” that should take his long time concert fans about three songs to adjust to.

Near the outset of the two-hour and 15-minute concert ,his ever first performance ever at the amphitheater and second stop of his The Outsiders Revival Tour, Church promised “this is gonna be a little different tonight, but it’s gonna be…badass” and to maybe spoil it a bit, he wasn’t wrong.  The idea was that the guy who for years has primarily toured in arenas and presented three-hour plus, multi night-long epic performances could trim things down for a more intimate outdoor amphitheater settings while adhering to local noise ordinances to have a cleared stage by 11 p.m., usually about the time in his set the arena based concerts have really started to take off. But remember this is Eric Church, the O.G. Outsider…a guy that does things his way…and also a previous CMA Entertainer of the Year that traditionally has played until HE says he is done.

The Outsiders Revival Tour is a hybrid concept for both Church and his fans alike. Some long standing followers are sure to be disappointed by the shortened show length, but what this country Icon has done is develop a setlist that keeps fans glued to their seat for two plus hours of pure Eric Church at his finest, but with a twist. Sometimes a little less turns out to be a whole lot more and that creed held true Friday night with Church. While he can never be accused of not giving fans what they want, his arena performances have sometimes been legendary to a fault. Although supported by a sturdy repertoire from his eight albums, some arena mainstays were notably absent Friday such as “These Boot’s” and “Record Year.” Both time consuming and long during his arena shows, there was no place in tonights affair for an extended band strumming and autograph session which in the past has encompassed 20 plus minutes. Reining it in on Friday, even if he went up against a costly curfew, Church and his 12-piece band were more immediate and impactful, almost playing with a sense of urgency with plethora of surprises that added vibrancy and freshness to Church’s familiar sound.

the outsiders revival tour setlist 2023

As mentioned the expanded 12-piece band itself is a new endeavor and serious game changer that takes the sonic experience to a whole new level. Church threw out the status quo by augmenting his usual touring band with three backup singers and a three-piece horn section. The expanded stage presence brought new textures and flavors to many of the 25 songs, from the rhythmic arrangement of the opener “Chattanooga Lucy” to the funky soil take on “Bad Mother Trucker,” a jazz infused revue style play-through of “Hangin’ Around” and a Zydeco/Caribbean vibe to “Drink in My Hand.” But Church didn’t forget his roots and held fast to tradition with a more pronounced,  contemporary feel to Friday’s rendition of “Country Music Jesus,” while “Give Me Back My Hometown” started quietly and built into the  muscular anthem it is before settling back down for its conclusion.

As has become a Church tradition when he plays the Motor City, he paid tribute to Bob Seger during a story he reminisced , reminding the standing crowd how the Detroit rock icon stepped in  2006 after Rascal Flatts removed Church from their tour as an opener. “I would not be here at all if it weren’t for Bob Seger,”  Church proclaimed, who ironically or smartly planned was wearing a Bob Seger T-shirt. “The next phone call we got was Bob Seger, and it went something to the effect of, ‘You can’t open for them, but you can open for me,’ so that’s what we did,” and the rest, as his storied career attests, is history. Church and then band then rolled through an epic eight-song, 12-minute medley of Seger that he and the band put together for, as he told the story, “A one time only and never to be performed again..,” of scintillating covers of “Turn the Page,” “Like a Rock,” “Roll Me Away,” “Mainstreet,” “Get Out of Denver,” “You’ll Accomp’ny Me,” “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” and finishing up with “Night Moves.”

Other highlights of the night included a guest duet with opening act Ashley McBryde during “Mixed Drinks About Feelings,” a cover of Little Feat’s “Sailin’ Shoes” and an extended performance of “Pledge Allegiance to the Hag,” performed in front of a large American flag and giving most of the horn section, most notably a particularly animated, trombonist Roy Agee, room to stretch out at stage front that had the staunchest old school Eric Church fans dancing in the aisles .

the outsiders revival tour setlist 2023

There were plenty of other Church favorites throughout the night that fans could hang their hat from, including “Mr. Misunderstood,” “Heart Like a Wheel,” “Homeboy,” “Smoke a Little Smoke” and an acoustic version “Springsteen,” that featured a solo Church, under a lone spot light laying it all out in front of 15000 swaying fans.

Nearing the end of his main set Church told the long sold-out Pine Knob Amphitheatre crowd, many still dripping from the day’s rain that finally stopped by the time he hit the stage around 9:05 p.m., that “There’s a certain time we’re supposed to get done — but I’m not gonna do that. Apologies to the local community here.” In typical Church style, then played until about 11:15, adding favorites such as “Talladega” which ultimately was requested my a young fan holding a sign near the stage and which Church acknowledged by pointing at the fan and announcing that “We weren’t going to play this tonight but this for you,” along with a mesmerizing   acoustic performances of “Holdin’ My Own” and “Sinners Like Me,” post-curfew and incurring Independance Township’s (in)famous $1,000-per-minute overtime fine.

Friday was only the second stop of The Outsiders Revival Tour and the fans on hand got a glimpse into an artist thats never satisfied and always strives to give his fans what they want plus more. Sure, he will be chastised for trimming his 3 1/2-hour performances  to a more manageable time frame by fans and nay-sayers alike. Sometimes less is more and what Eric Church has done is eliminated the fat and created a lean two-hour performance that is every bit as good and dare say better than what we have seen in the past. Its a new and welcomed chapter in the career of the country legend and for that we say well done Mr. Church, well done.

Eric Church Kicks Off The Outsiders Revival Tour at Summerfest in Milwaukee

By Eric Church

Eric Church ensured his 2023 Outsiders Revival tour got off to a flying start, with a stellar performance at Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Thursday night (June 22).

The ‘Chief’ was on fine form, delivering an impressive range of hits from across his sprawling discography. The crowd was all to happy to join him for the ride from the opening song right through to the finale, with seemingly every member of the American Family Insurance Amphitheater audience singing along with unbounded enthusiasm.

Church was joined by Elle King, who continues to gain momentum following her high-profile hosting gig and surprise appearance during Miranda Lambert's set at CMA Fest a few weeks earlier.

Although Eric Church's curtailed CMA Fest performance was maligned by some, in Milwaukee, there was no questioning the ‘Hell of a View’ hitmaker's status as one of the greats in modern country.

He maintained his angsty, simmering stage presence through ‘Drink in my Hand’ and ‘Springsteen’, and it felt as though Church was on a mission to retaliate against his CMA Fest detractors in the only way he knows how - by firing back with a blistering, stand-out set.

It bodes well for the remainder of his Outsiders Revival tour, which will see the Chief packing up his wealth of chart-toppers and scattering them across Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Texas, Indiana, Illinois and more.

Support will be coming in the form of a star-studded roster of country music's most exciting names, including the likes of Whiskey Myers, Jelly Roll, Ashley McBryde, Midland, Lainey Wilson, Parker McCollum, Hailey Whitters, Cody Jinks and Koe Wetzel.

The outsiders revival tour - chicago, il 8.12.23.

By Adam Lucas

TINLEY PARK, IL—The moment Cody Jinks officially became part of the Eric Church tour family happened on Friday in Indianapolis.

Here’s an important fact about tour life: credentials are everything. A tour stops in a different city every night, with a completely different town’s security staff responsible for controlling access to the backstage area. So the highly artistic card-sized laminates become a golden ticket to move freely about the venue.

Got your all access pass clipped to your belt or hanging around your neck? You can go pretty much anywhere you want.

Forget it in your backpack or on your dresser at home? You’re going to have a very difficult task talking your way past anyone.

As you might expect, maintaining the integrity of those passes is paramount. Misplacing them is highly discouraged. So highly discouraged that when a verified tour member shows up without a pass, tour manager Todd Bunch long ago devised a very appropriate punishment: they are given a temporary replacement credential that reads, “I’m a dumbass who forgot my pass.”

“I also have an 8.5 by 11 version,” Bunch said a little evilly on Saturday evening.

But on Friday, something unexpected happened: it was opener Jinks who showed up without his pass. What to do then? You can’t really make Cody Jinks, he of “Must Be the Whiskey” and “Hippies and Cowboys” and “Somewhere in the Middle,” wear the dumbass pass, can you?

Even Bunch, who has been around long enough not to be impressed by anyone, said, “I wasn’t going to make him wear it.”

But Jinks insisted. “Hey,” he said, “I’m the one who forgot my pass.”

That’s how you win friends on a tour. He very easily could have sent someone else to do the dirty work for him, or rolled his eyes at the tour tradition. But he didn’t. And that’s a big part of why these last four editions of the Outsiders Revival Tour, with Jinks opening for Church, have felt so clean. Honestly, you could pick any of the last four—Raleigh, Bristow, Indianapolis, Chicago—and they’d be in the discussion for best show of the tour so far.

Saturday night was another standout. Credit Union 1 Amphitheater is enormous, with a listed capacity of 28,000, the biggest on the tour. There were people jammed into every corner of the structure, from the gargantuan lawn—with seating for 17,000, just the lawn is bigger than many entire amphitheaters—to the unique two-tiered suite level that hangs off the roof.

Church came out wearing the familiar four-star city of Chicago flag draped around his neck, and from that moment forward the revival was in full effect. As a tribute to The Band’s Robbie Robertson, he played “Ophelia” for the first time since 2017. After being reminded about the song twice in the past 24 hours—including once at Saturday night’s meet and greet, so you never know when your comments might make a difference—he also did “Some Of It” for the first time since October of 2021.

The giant crowd loved every second of it. After “Smoke a Little Smoke” they were high-fiving as if Justin Fields had just thrown a touchdown pass, and during “Give Me Back My Hometown” the decibel level at the front of house just from the roar of the crowd reached 110 for one of the few times on this tour.

It was, very simply, a night where everyone involved was performing at the highest possible level. As Church said at the outset when promising to take the crowd on a true revival, “We’re professionals and we’re good at this.”

And people noticed. Such as, for example, Cody Jinks. In each of his four sets on the tour, he’s made a point of complimenting Church’s crew from the stage. It’s not just rehearsed stage patter. He means it.

“Eric’s entire crew has taken such great care of us,” he said. “I’ve been doing this for 25 years. Their entire camp is as good as it gets. We’ve worked with some really big camps where that isn’t the case. I think it’s important to let the fans know that this is big business, and there are a lot of people involved. And it’s good to let a crew like Eric’s know that we appreciate it.

“Everything starts at the top. They’re just good people. They’re helpful, kind, and accommodating. That makes it fun.”

He’s right. It does start at the top. During the pandemic, Church kept all his regular crew on their normal salaries, despite the fact that everyone was sitting at home. Overall, the crew is unusually passionate about making sure they are putting on the very best show in the country.

It’s not unusual for sound board wizard Ben Rigby to walk the lawn during the opener. “I know this sounds corny,” he said, “but I just want to remember that those are the people we’re putting on a great show for.” During “Springsteen,” chef Bob Schneeberger spotted a young girl in the crowd whose even younger brother was battling to stay awake. He promptly walked into the crowd and delivered them a guitar pick. “For when he wakes up,” he told the kids’ mother.

It makes it so much easier to make an effort to take care of others when you know someone else is committed to taking care of you. During his first-ever headlining amphitheater tour, in the heat of summer, Church is paying for a full-time medical technician who can administer IV’s to keep the crew hydrated.

Here’s the difference about the last four shows: when Jinks saw the IVs being administered, he inquired about their benefits…and then paid out of his own pocket for his entire crew to receive the same treatment options.

Saturday’s venue had one of the strictest and earliest curfews on this tour so far. But as early as 10 p.m., watching Church interact with the crowd and feed off their energy, it was obvious he wasn’t going to be able to leave them as early as expected. He came back out for “Springsteen,” and then, with some of his production staff likely breaking out in hives, proclaimed, “One more!” That led him into “Holdin’ My Own,” which he has frequently called his favorite song.

His favorite song was a fitting way to close a set of shows that immediately go into the favorite category. But it strongly feels like we may not have seen the last collaboration between Jinks and Church.

The last two nights, Church has tweaked the lyrics of “Mr. Misunderstood,” augmenting Jeff Tweedy to also include, “Think Cody Jinks is one bad mother.” It’s one of the highest forms of praise from someone who is so very intentional about every word of every song.

“Cody is exactly who I wanted him to be,” Church said. “I was already a fan. But I’m a bigger fan after meeting he and his crew and most importantly his family. He is exactly the guy I will always pull for. It was a pleasure having him join our circus.”
