Thailand Tours & Vacations
Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.
But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.
Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.
Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.
If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs
Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).
Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.
Eating and drinking
Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.
Things to try in Thailand
1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)
A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.
2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)
Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.
3. Green curry
One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.
4. Som tam (green papaya salad)
This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.
5. Coconut water
For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.
6. Tropical fruit
Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.
Geography and environment
Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors Cambodia , Laos , Malaysia , and Myanmar (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.
The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.
Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.
History and government
Early history.
Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.
Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.
Recent history
Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.
Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.
In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

6. Sukhothai
This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.
Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.
The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.
Things to buy in Thailand
- Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
- Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
- Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
- Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
- Colorful Celadon ceramics
- Tailor-made clothing
Festival and events
Loy krathong (festival of lights).
During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.
Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)
At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.
Songkran (Thai New Year)
What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.
Chiang Mai Flower Festival
Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

Custom Asia Travel Experience
We had a great day in Ninh Binh! The customer service rep (Molly) was very helpful organising a custom tour so we could see the major sights. Our guide, Thu, was very friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We saw Bai Dinh temple, Hoa Lu ancient city, Bich Dong pagoda, and Tam Coc boat tour. We would recommend this company to others!
Trip of a lifetime!
I cannot say enough positives about Custom Asia Travel! We visited Vietnam in December/January 2023 and had an amazing trip with our 3 teens. The itinerary exceeded our expectations! We travelled to Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and Nha Trang. We had no issues with any of our transportation around the country - our drivers and guides were always there on time (early, actually), friendly and helpful. The accommodations were excellent and our guides were fantastic (Tanh, Tanh, and Viet - they were awesome!). Every place we stayed put our rooms right next to each other, often adjoining, and the kids’ room always had two twin beds and a cot, while my husband and I had a king bed. This was perfect as our teenagers did not want to share beds, lol! The activities were super fun and appealed to all of us. So many highlights - the kids loved the rice farm tour (riding the water Buffalo elicited the biggest smile we’ve ever seen from our 16 year old!), seeing the caves in Ninh Binh, the cooking class in Hoi An, and Ha Long Bay. I really appreciated that some of our itinerary was focused on less crowded activities - a couple of the temples we saw were practically empty, allowing us to enjoy and experience these beautiful sites on our own. We did a couple of bike rides which were also highlights, such a great way to explore and see the area! Minh was available and responsive while planning the trip and while we were there. I agree with others reviews about whether she ever sleeps! She was able to coordinate our luggage getting dropped off as it did not arrive with us, and contacted one of the hotels about a ring that had been left, and arranged for us to pick it up. She was warm, friendly, knowledgeable, and so helpful. We truly had a relaxing and stress free trip because of the excellent customer service from Minh and our guides. With only having 12 days to visit we were so grateful to be able to enjoy the travel and know that Minh and her team were there if and when needed. I highly recommend using this company, you will not regret it! Now I am dreaming of how quickly we can make it back!! Thank you thank you to Minh and the team, our trip was unforgettable!

It’s impossible to sum up Thailand in a few words. The land of smiles is known the world over for its spectacular natural landscapes, bustling resorts and captivating historical resorts, from beautiful Buddhist temples to grand palaces.
This outstanding part of the world has long been the first port of call for holidaymakers looking to explore Southeast Asia. One of the main appeals of a Thailand holiday is the country's incredible diversity and wide choice of destinations, from the bustling surroundings of Bangkok to the luxurious Koh Samui coast.
Thailand’s exceptional tourist trade shows no signs of dwindling, either. The country’s reputation for being one of the world’s favourite holiday destinations is no coincidence. A mixture of endearing hospitality and a welcoming atmosphere sees millions flock to this sublime region, year after year.
Browse our selection of cheap 5 star Thailand holidays to discover this exotic destination, and sample the diverse culture that’s a source of inspiration for millions. Our cheap luxury trips to Asia will allow you to go on holiday to Thailand in 2024 / 2025 without it costing the earth. For the ultimate experience, we'd recommend our Thailand multicentre holidays.
Currency: Thai Baht Language: Thai Time Difference: GMT + 7 hours Flight Time: Approximately 12 hours.
Flights: You can fly to Bangkok from most major UK airports. However, getting to other destinations in Thailand may include a stop off on the way.
Passport/visa requirements: You must hold a valid British passport. This allows you to visit Thailand for less than 30 days without requiring a visa.
Packing essentials: Due to Thailand’s tropical climate it is best to pack light clothing. You should also include sunglasses, a sun hat and a light rain mac. If you plan to visit any temples or sacred sites, make sure that you pack clothes which cover your legs and shoulders.
Thailand holidays offer a diverse array of travel experiences. Thailand may have a reputation for being one of the party capitals of the world, but there’s so much more to this vibrant country than full moon parties and the raucous nightlife of Patong. Thailand is one of the best destinations for long haul family holidays, and offers plenty of culture and some of the best beaches in the world. With a wide choice of both 4 star and 5 star Thailand holidays on offer, there really is something for every traveller.
Bangkok , the country’s thriving capital is home to a contrasting mix of luxury shopping complexes and traditional markets, amazing skyscrapers and ancient buildings including the Grand Palace and majestic Wat Arun temple.
Located toward the southwest of the country is Phuket . Thailand’s largest island offers a very different experience from the capital. Where Bangkok is an urban metropolis, Phuket is a laid-back paradise, where golden sands meet warm turquoise waters.
Phuket holidays are a little more traditional, with beachfront resorts, water sports and theme parks, as well as a host of national parks. Those hoping for a taste of Thailand’s world-famous nightlife must pay a visit to Phuket Town.
Koh Samui offers a taste of real luxury holidays in Thailand, with pristine beaches, mountainous rainforests and a plethora of palatial 5-star resorts . The island is situated on the opposite side of the country, just off the east coast. Like Phuket, Koh Samui offers a vibrant mix of leisure activities and brilliant nightlife.
Those looking for a secluded retreat, away from all the hustle and bustle, will find it at Khao Lak . The resort, found on Thailand’s west coast, is one of the country’s best-known secrets.
Elsewhere, the quaint fishing village of Hua Hin , offers impeccable beaches and peaceful resorts, making it obvious why the Thai Royal family built a summer palace here. Krabi with its serene beaches, national parks and rainforests is a resort that really encapsulates Thailand’s natural beauty and should be on any bucket list.
Chiang Mai is a great city destination to enjoy the markets, temples, history and culture of Thailand at a more relaxed pace than in Bangkok and with a more picturesque backdrop of lush green mountains.
Domestic flights are usually one of the easiest ways to get around Thailand, and with surprisingly cheap internal flights, it usually works out cost-effective. Both national and international airlines run multiple flights daily across the country, which will suit all kinds of travellers.
Expert tip: make sure to check specific airline baggage allowances..
Thailand’s railway system is constantly evolving year-on-year, with rail travel offering a typically safer alternative than coaches and buses. While it can be slow, as it stands, Thai railways are government-owned, so you can usually find cheap trains in Thailand. Travelling by rail also offers you the chance to meet new friends or just sit back and relax, enjoying the beautiful scenery out the window.
Travelling by coach or bus in Thailand is extremely cheap and convenient for most destinations. Short-distance bus trips can be found easily in any city or major town, although some routes include a lot of stops, so if you’re in a rush, taxis may be the way to go.
For short journeys you can also hire a tuk-tuk, for a unique view of cities at a fraction of tour prices. For taxis in Thailand, get a price beforehand and try to book in advance with respected companies. In busier cities like Bangkok , Uber also runs a competitive and safe option.
A necessity for island hopping in Thailand! Ferries travel to popular islands like Ko Phi Phi and href="https://www.destination2.co.uk/destinations/thailand/koh-samui">Koh Samui regularly during peak season. Times and schedules vary, but a good rule of thumb is: the quicker the ferry, the more expensive the ticket.
Expert tip: during monsoon season (May to October) many ferry companies operate revised services, so check before planning your holiday.
As night falls, Thailand's cities, towns and resorts come alive!
Whether it’s late-night shopping, dining or all-night partying in the busy entertainment districts, you will never be stuck looking for something to do at night in Thailand.
Night Markets
Although night markets are a feature right across the country, the best night market in Thailand is situated in the capital - the Bangkok Night Markets.
Rot Fai market is known for its huge size and hordes of memorabilia and vintage gifts. It moved in 2013 from the north of the city to the east, but this didn’t take away any of the original charm.
If you want something with a bit more wow factor to the usual stalls, then ChangChui is perfect for that.
Dubbed the ‘plane market’, ChangChui is one of the newest additions to the already busy night market culture, but it has one incredibly cool feature that makes it stand out - a huge aeroplane with stalls underneath sits in the middle of the market, for amazing shopping and photo opportunities.
Revisit the Temples
Almost everyone makes a point of visiting some Thailand’s temples during the day, but many miss out on revisiting once the sun goes down.
Come nighttime, most Thai temples are even free to visit, including Wat Arun and Wat Phra Kaew.
Other options are to take a river cruise at night to see many temples that are in close proximity, or take a taxi tour around the city to discover the main attractions.
It needs little explanation that Thailand is one of the party capitals of the world.
- Khao San Road – Bangkok
- Walking Street – Pattaya
- Bangla Road – Phuket
If you’re craving a beach holiday that promises to exceed all expectations, you can’t go wrong with Thailand.
From glorious golden sands to sugar-soft white shores, Thailand’s best beaches are second to none.
The island of Phuket is a popular option for luxury escapes, offering a number of breathtaking stretches of sand, along with stunning natural scenery, colourful nightlife and a selection of lavish hotels and resorts.
Another destination known for its immaculate beaches is Koh Samui . Located off the east coast of Thailand, this enchanting island offers a good choice of 4 and 5-star accommodation, and is a top location for both nightlife and scuba diving in Thailand.
Hua Hin is another great choice. This former summer retreat for the Thai royal family offers white sand shores, emerald waters and a great choice of hotels.
The mesmerising beaches and secluded coves of Krabi are also popular with visitors to Thailand, while the resort of Khao Lak offers a laid-back coastal retreat, ideal for couples and families.

Expert tips.
“ Apart from the most upmarket restaurants and shops, Thailand is very much a cash-based economy so your credit card won’t be much use on a day-to-day basis. Make sure you carry enough Thai baht in small denominations to cover your everyday purchases, especially if you are travelling to places where ATMs are few and far between, such as the more remote islands in Thailand. ”
“ If you ever find yourself on the vibrant isle of Koh Phangan be sure to taste the island’s specialities called No Names. These spicy little fritters are served with a delicate dipping sauce and are perfect with a cold Chang beer or a coconut and pineapple milkshake – bliss.”
Thailand Multi-centre
Our multi-centre holidays balance the high-energy vibe of Thailand’s cosmopolitan capital with the serene, blue-green waters of the country’s stunning islands.
Best Time to Visit Thailand
May and June are also good times to visit the country. The crowds are fewer, and the weather is warm though you might experience an odd shower or two in June.
Things to Do in Thailand
While you will find finger-licking-good street food almost everywhere in Bangkok, the best places to try out Thailand’s delectable street fare are Yaowarat in Chinatown and the Bang Rak area.

In cities such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai or Phuket that lack a good public transportation network, the best choice is to hire a rental car with a chauffeur. For a more local experience, you can travel by tuk-tuk; just be sure to sharpen your bargaining skills!
3. What is the food like in Thailand?
Thai food is an irresistible mix of sweet, spicy, sour and hot flavours and features rice, noodles, salads and curries. Shrimp paste and fish sauce are used for flavouring many of the dishes. Seafood features prominently in Thai cuisine.
Popular Thai dishes include Pad Thai (stir fried rice noodles), Khao Pad (fried rice), coconut milk-based Tom Yum soup, raw papaya and mango salad, red, yellow, green and Panang curry. Finish your meal with the ubiquitous mango sticky rice.
Street food is incredibly popular in Thailand, and you will never be too far from a stall serving piping hot Thai classics.
Every year, Thailand celebrates a ten-day long Vegetarian Festival in the ninth lunar month according to the Chinese calendar. While this is observed across the country, the most prominent celebrations take place in Phuket. A wide range of vegan dishes is available at restaurants across the country during this period.
4. Which islands are best for families and couples in Thailand?
With their pristine beaches and luxury accommodations, Koh Samui and Koh Lipe are the perfect island getaways for couples and honeymooners.
Family-friendly resorts and activities make Koh Samui the best pick for families with children.
5. What are the top nightlife activities to discover in Thailand?
Bangkok lights up as the sun goes down and offers plenty of after-dark adventures to embark upon on your holidays to Thailand.
Take in the city’s sparkling skyline from one of its many rooftop bars, grab a bite at a night market or enjoy a nighttime cruise on the Chao Phraya river. The city is known for its extravagant live shows; take your pick from entertaining puppet shows, Muay Thai (Thai boxing) or grand dance performances.
Phuket and Pattaya are also known for their colourful nightlife scene.
6. What are the top cultural attractions in Thailand?
Here are the top cultural attractions that you should not miss on your Thailand holidays:
- Learn about Buddhist culture at Bangkok’s temples
- Marvel at the art and architecture of Chiang Rai’s stunning temples
- Sign up for a Thai cooking class
- Visit Bangkok’s bustling markets
- Participate in a local festival (the Songkran festival takes place in April, and the Loy Krathong Festival in November)

From its northern hill tribes and dense jungle to the perfect beaches down south and the buzz of Bangkok, there are no holidays quite like Thailand holidays.
• Thailand is home to the world’s ninth tallest statue, The Great Buddha of Thailand , proudly watching over the Wat Muang Monastery in Ang Thong province.
• Head to Chiang Mai to escape the heat and the crowds as you trek through ancient rainforests.
• No trip to Thailand would be complete without sampling the world-class food. Hot, spicy, fresh and delicious, you’ll find hawkers selling it on every street corner.
• Not quite in their original spirit and somewhat over-run with tourists, there’s still no denying that the Full Moon parties on Koh Phangan are a sight to behold.
When to visit
You can visit Thailand all year round, but the best time to travel is during the cooler, dry season – between November and early April. Essentially, there are three main seasons: rainy (May–October), cool (November–February) and hot (March–May). The climate can vary in different parts of the country however, with the north much cooler, especially in the jungle regions, while the western and southern isles get much hotter.
What to pack
Thailand lies in the heart of southeast Asia’s tropical zone and the southern most border runs around seven degrees north of the equator, meaning it enjoys a warm, tropical climate all year round. Pack lightweight clothing and expect to cover up when visiting sacred temples or sites. If you’re visiting the north it might be wise to pack a lightweight jumper. May to October is rainy season so packing some waterproof items might be a wise decision.
Areas of Thailand
Koh Samui Holidays
Krabi Holidays
Hua Hin Holidays
Chiang Mai Holidays
Phuket Holidays
Bangkok Holidays
Hot, loud, frenetic, exotic and with a population of around 11 million people - heady Bangkok is a feast for the senses. Thai hospitality is in a class of its own, and much of the five-star accommodation can be found along the Chao Phraya River , such as Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok and Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort . Things to do on Thailand holidays are varied, such as the incredible Wat Pho and The Grand Palace , Thai boxing matches, traditional dancing shows, hip bars, night markets and the Chatuchak Weekend Market - a law unto itself, this place has an estimated 8,000 stalls selling a cornucopia of wares.
Cooler, calmer and less developed than other regions, Northern Thailand offers jungles, mountains, hill tribes and a plethora of Buddhist temples. Chiang Mai is part of the Golden Triangle and is a place for calm recollection and relaxation. Bordering Laos and Myanmar, many visitors head to the mountains and forests of the Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park , others opt for a guided tour to Mae Sa on a quest to discover ancient hill tribes. Some tours are better than others, with questions occasionally raised as to their authenticity. Further north, Chiang Rai offers unspoiled mountain villages, waterfall-filled rainforests and peaceful wats. Visitors to this part of the country can also test their nerves rafting in Um Phang , party with the backpacker crowd in Pai or enjoy a traditional homestay in rural Sukhothai and find peace at Phrae’s Buddhist temple.
The southern islands
Thousands of islands line the Gulf Coast on the east side and Andaman Sea on the west, both offering paradise-perfect beaches, but the unrivalled beauty of the islands has of course been affected by mass tourism.
Holidays to Thailand are not complete without visiting the trio of islands known as Koh Samui , Koh Phangan and Koh Tao . Koh Samui still manages to retain a certain amount of charm in the less developed resorts. Koh Phangan has changed immeasurably over the years due to its reputation for full and half moon parties, while Koh Tao is the smallest of the three and better suited to couples and families as well as being a popular spot for diving.
The Andaman coast side is dotted with dramatic limestone karst islands, jutting out of the ocean. Phuket and Krabi are the most popular stop-off points here. Phuket is predominantly a brash party destination, but also attracts a well-heeled crowd to its villas, boutique boltholes and luxurious hotels. Krabi has a much calmer air, and is a great place to explore before heading to Ko Phi Phi Lee and Ko Phi Phi Don , the two picture-postcard islands made famous by James Bond and Leonardo di Caprio, but now rammed with tourism. For those looking for a more authentic experience, Ko Lipe , Ko Ra Wi and Ko Adang hold a special allure and are still relatively unspoilt.
Holidaying Bangkokians and package tourists head to this part of the country, lured by the islands and beaches, some just as beautiful as the southern isles, but bear in mind that much of the first part of the coastline to the east of Bangkok is heavily industrialised. Pattaya is Thailand’s number one package-tour destination but perhaps not the highest quality destination, however the ever-enduring Ko Samet is a calm, beautiful, palm-fringed island that has long been a hangout for diving enthusiasts. Head to Trat if you want to access the more mainstream Ko Chang , lesser-known Ko Kood , Ko Mak and Ko Ku or family-friendly Ko Wai .
Central plains
Many travellers simply pass through central Thailand, but this part of the country is well worth a look, given this is home to a great deal of the country’s rich historical and cultural heritage. Visit the grand former capital, Ayutthaya , to discover gleaming temples and palaces of former Thai rulers, harking back to a bygone era or Sukhothai , birthplace of the Thai kingdom in the 13th century. Nature is all around too, with the vast mountain ranges, caves and crevices of Thong Pha Phum National Park waiting to be explored, along with the allure of potentially seeing wild tigers - all within easy reach of the capital.
Thai cuisine is arguably among the best in the world and is best discovered on an all-inclusive holiday . Spicy green and red Thai curries made with rich, creamy coconut milk feature on menus throughout the region, as does the shrimp-, tofu- and noodle-based, Pad Thai. Tom Yum Goong is a hot, spicy soup, laced with herbs including Thai basil, coriander and kaffir lime leaves.
No holiday to Thailand would be complete without a visit to the street hawkers, very common throughout Thailand. Bustling night markets and hawker carts offer such delicacies as deep-fried crickets, bamboo worms, ants and scorpions. Try them if you dare.
Whilst Thailand offers an array of unique dishes, our Singapore holidays are a fantastic way to spend a trip for any food lover as there 29 Michelin starred restaurants in the country (which is also one of the smallest countries in the world).
From Thailand’s most famous resident and national animal, the elephant, to Macaque monkeys, gibbons, geckos, lizards, snakes, rhinos and crocodiles, the country is home to a colourful and varied range of animals. Thailand’s rainforests host many mammals and over 900 species of birds. There are said to be 365 species of coral reef fish in the Gulf of Thailand.
Just across the Southern boarder of Thailand is where our Malaysia holidays go to, where you can find Bornean orangutan, Malayan tigers and Indian elephants. Malaysia really has it all for those wanting an exotic wildlife hotspot.
Thai culture is deeply influenced Buddhism and Hinduism. Many traditions stem from Buddhist principles and locals worship at temples known as wats - ornate, gleaming buildings that are a huge draw for visitors – of which there are more than 40,000 in the country.
The wai is a prayer-like gesture made with the hands that includes a slight bow of the head while the famous Thai smile has lead to the country being dubbed, ‘the land of a thousand smiles’. Food, dance, music, arts and literature are all an important part of everyday life. Thai boxing is a native form of kickboxing and is Thailand’s signature sport.
Overall, Thailand definitely provides an interesting look on a unique culture, although whilst neighbouring, our Bali holidays display such a diverse and unique difference that would interest anyone. They are definitely worth a visit if you want something different.
Many Thai people originally lived in southwestern China and migrated to Thailand over a number of years. Early settlers split into two main groups: one in the north became the kingdom of Lanna, the other settled south and became known as the kingdom of Sukhothai. Meaning the ‘Dawn of Happiness’, Sukhothai was the first independent Thai Kingdom founded in 1238, followed by the unified Thai kingdom (Ayutthaya) in the mid-14th century, and the country was known as Siam until 1939.
Given its river location, Bangkok has been of major importance since 1782. In more recent history, military leaders staged a bloodless coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2006 and unrest continued to unsettle the country up until 2015. However, most of Thailand remains unaffected and it still holds its place as the 15th most visited country in the world. It is also the only southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power.
Our Hong Kong holidays can also be filled with discovering the history of the Far East if this is something that interests you. Hong Kong has a vast history dating back to 221-206 BC and since then it has been ruled by various dynasties until finally in 1997, Hong Kong was handed back to Chinese authorities as a Special Administrative Region.
Attractions
Khao Sok National Park
Whether you want to trek through lust rainforest – said to be the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world – go deep underground on a pitch-black cave tour, trail limestone mountains or stay on the beautiful Cheow Larn Lake in the heart of the park with its floating houses, this area has huge appeal. Located in Surat Thani in the south, it’s the place to head for a real jungle adventure.
The Great Buddha of Thailand
Thailand is home to the world’s ninth tallest statue – The Great Buddha of Thailand, also known as The Big Buddha – proudly guarding over the Wat Muang Monastery in Ang Thong province. The statue is 92m high and 63m wide and is painted gleaming gold, a true sight to behold.
Bangkok’s Grand Palace
A complex of beautifully ornate buildings in the heart of Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, the Palace was once home of the King and his court and the entire administrative seat of government for around 150 years. Spanning an area of 218,400 sq. metres, you will find gilded chapels, inner, outer and middle courtyards, a throne hall and perfectly manicured gardens.
A trip to the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya – founded in 1350 and the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom – is a must-see if you’re interested in discovering Thailand’s real history and heritage. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site , you can explore the ancient ruins and visit gilded temples and palaces that hint at Thailand’s fascinating past.
Mae Hong Son Loop
This desirable 600km roadtrip through Mae Hong Son Province lures travellers in search of authentic, sleepy Thailand. This is the most mountainous province in Thailand and receives few visitors due to its remote location and time needed to reach it – most people allow four days to complete the trip, which includes the highest mountain in Thailand, Doi Inthanon .
Kanchanaburi
A two-hour drive from Bangkok, this town is an adventure hub and also the ideal base to explore the notorious Bridge Over The River Kwai and Death Railway , constructed in World War II when Japanese forces used allied Prisoners of War and Asian armed forces to build a rail route to Myanmar. It is estimated that around 90,000 people died during its construction. Further north from here is the Khao Laem Reservoir with several sunken temples that can be discovered by boat or kayak.
The Khmers of neighbouring Cambodia left a chain of incredible ruins across the northeast, such as those seen in this unassuming little town. On a par with Angkor, the Phimai Historical Park protects one of the most important Khmer temples of Thailand, Prasat Phimai , which once stood on the Ancient Khmer ‘highway’ linking Angkor with the northern reaches of its realm.
Thailand is a beautiful country with a rich culture and serene beaches with an affordable price label. Have a look at our romantic retreat , and all-inclusive holidays to secure fantastic holidays to Thailand.

Amazing Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam 18 days
Just finished my Amazing 18 day tour of Thailand, Vietnam & Cambodia, and ‘Amazing’ is definitely the right word!!! The whole tour was well planned & well run. Special thanks to Ha Nguyen for being in constant email contact with me, advising me of the coming days activities, pickup times & tour details, which was very much appreciated. Daily group tours were fantastic, the drivers & tour guides were so caring, courteous & always very helpful. Thanks also to a special tour guide- Hen Chenda for looking after me at Angkor Wat! Each country had its highlights - too many to mention, but all a delightful experience. Every accommodation was top class, with beautiful rooms, meals were also top quality. I would highly recommend this tour & company. Thanks for the beautiful memories. Cheryl Craig, Australia

21 days Thailand, Laos, Vietnam & Cambodia
Thank you for so much help before the tour and the wonderful staff you provided to make our trip something we will always cherish! I would love to give feedback on each of our guides but cannot remember their names (Suggestion: It would be helpful if that information was included on our itinerary or the guides provided a card with their names on it when we met them.) Some of them were outstanding with their English and did a wonderful job directing us through the sites. It would have been helpful on the first day/night to give more detailed instructions as there is so much going on that it is hard to take it all in. Example: We would need to check out of the hotel by 7am and take our luggage with us on the tour. It would also be nice to know what we are to do about breakfast as the first day our tour left at 7am but breakfast was not available until 7am. The staff at Grand Alpine would not accommodate us and told us we needed to speak to our tour guide (who, when I asked, told us that we would have a box waiting - which didn't happen.) The rest of the tour was wonderful and we felt very cared for. It was just that first day that was a bit of a challenge. We will always remember our time in SE Asia and smile:)
Essential Vietnam & Cambodia
Kosal went above and beyond to make this tour one of the best I've ever been on! We learned so much about the history of the countries and it was the perfect itinerary. Literally could not recommend enough!!!
11 Days Fantastic Vietnam & Thailand
We enjoyed everything about our tour in Vietnam except the breakfast and stay at the Titan Hotel. The smell in the room was overbearing for 2 nights, we even purchased room spray but that didn't help. The breakfast selection was nothing to rave about. we decided to eat elsewhere in the am. Bau and Nguyen were excellent guides. When we arrived in Thailand, there were some issues with the transportation to the hotel. I would've been nice for Hoi An to let us know which company in they used for the tours, we didn't know until we landed and had to search the airport and make several calls. The guide, Honey Bee in Bangkok, spent more time on her phone than actually interacting with us. She was nice but nothing special. The guide in Chiang Mai, Indie, was excellent. She was flexible with us very informative. We would definitely recommend this tour to friends.
Endless Beauty of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand - 19 Days
This tour was epic for me. As a first time American to all these countries was a dream. Danny from the Legends Company was very informative, took care to keep us informed and accessible by Whats up to help and assist with travel issues. We picked a private driver and guide. It was so worth it in hot weather. The hotels and meals were good. The itinerary was great. I would recommend spending more time in Thailand on your own after the tour. I believe this was a great out and a great price.
Glimpse Of Indochina In 16 Days (Vietnam,Cambodia,Thailand,Laos)
Every aspect of this trip was flawlessly planned. Lucy stayed in to touch to ensure that everything was going well. I would highly recommend this tour company.

Southeast Asia Discovery 19 Days
The accommodations were consistently excellent, offering comfort and a sense of place in each location. Bravo Indochina Tours' attention to detail was evident throughout the tour.
Julia in Vietnam was a great tour leader professional but also very fun and knew how to get everyone to have a good time. PS send her to Bali!!
Splendid of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand 18 Days
We enjoyed the tour tremendously. It was a very busy tour though, with lots of travel and we were exhausted by the end of the holiday
Premium Thailand and Vietnam (including Halong Bay)
Indochina Delight with Thai Beach Escape 16-Day
we booked with Halong tours back in April and Ms Kim was fantastic, answering every email promptly, explaining every step of the way and offering upgrades when she thought we would like them. We were met on every bus, plane and minibus by a competent driver or tour guide. All the hotels were great, the staff so friendly and accommodating and the tour guides very informative. I can't speak highly enough of Halong tours and Ms Kim who met with us on our first night and explained in person the tour and even where to eat in Hanoi. We also met other people at times on the tour and they all spoke very highly of Halong tours and their tour guides and hotels. Don't hesitate to book with them, they are great and run on time want to share with you their fantastic country and culture. Visited December 2016

Begin at the Maeklong Railway Market in Samut Songkram, and enjoy the spectacle as vendors quickly pack up their stalls to let trains pass directly through the market. Continue to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, where you'll hop in small boats to explore the market's bustling canals. Continue to Kanchanaburi, made famous by 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. During the Japanese occupation of Thailand in WWII, tens of thousands of Allied POWs and Southeast Asian indentured labourers were forced to build the Thai-Burma Railway, often called the Death Railway; many of the prisoners died under the brutal conditions. Learn about their tragic story at the Thai-Burma Railway Museum, then pay respects to the victims at the Allied War Cemetery before checking in at your hotel.
Visit Hellfire Pass, a dramatic part of the railway that literally cuts through mountain. Begin at the Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum, which tells the stories of human suffering at the hands of this engineering feat, before a 3 kilometre walk through the pass. Finally, take a short train journey on the Death Railway and see more of this beautiful valley before driving back to Bangkok.
Drive 90 minutes east out of Bangkok to discover the historic ruins of Ayutthaya, the historic capital of Siam from 1350 until its destruction by Burmese invaders in 1767. Continue to Mae Sai, the northernmost point of Thailand and an important trading town on the Myanmar border. Return to Chiang Rai for dinner; afterwards, you may wish to explore the colourful night market.

Sightseeing today will include approximately 3 hours on foot.

This afternoon is spent crossing the countryside, passing forests, farms and villages to reach the Hmong Hilltribe Lodge, where you will be guests of the Hmong community. The Hmong Hilltribe Lodge is made up of ten individual houses, each comprising of four separate rooms with private bathrooms, arranged around a central communal area. How Thailand lured the White Lotus producers away from Japan and plans to cash in on the show's popularity with tourists
As fans eagerly wait for a new lot of guests to check into the White Lotus, a behind-the-scenes drama has been unfolding to secure the filming location of the Emmy-award winning show.
The series has been so incredibly lucrative for the first two destinations it featured that some have dubbed it "The White Lotus effect".
A show ostensibly about tourists has in turn been a boon for tourism in Hawaii, where online interest in the Four Seasons Maui jumped by 425 per cent after the first season aired.
And in Sicily, where Jennifer Coolidge was famously stalked by murderous gays in season two, the production is estimated to have resulted in over 32 million euros ($52.8 million) worth of spending and a 300 per cent jump in online searches, according to travel site Expedia.
So when rumours surfaced of a "high profile" showrunner — believed to be White Lotus creator Mike White — scouting locations in Japan, Thai authorities swept in to try to woo the team to South East Asia instead.
How Thailand lured The White Lotus away from Japan
Tourism Authority of Thailand Executive Siripakorn Cheawsamoot said they were proactive in their attempts to lure the popular show to the kingdom.
"We approached the White Lotus production team and then we talked with them about trying to bring their budget costs down with potential partners," he told the ABC.
"There are two kinds of incentives. Firstly, cash incentives with rebates and then in-kind incentives as well."
In-kind incentives are non-cash incentives, and can include things like offering services for free.
"A lot of partners in the private sector offered their services, sometimes complimentary, some on an agreement," Mr Cheawsamoot said.
He explained that hotels were provided to the actors and film crew to stay in. Transport and airfares were some of the other perks.
But the real clincher was the Thai government's recently beefed-up film incentive program, which offers a cash rebate of up to 20 per cent for foreign film productions.
In an effort to attract more film and TV productions, the government decided in 2022 to waive the personal income tax for foreign talent for five years, meaning the stars of season three — which include Parker Posey, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Aimee Lou Wood — won't pay Thai tax while working on location.
Thailand's gain was Japan's loss and at last year's Toyko Film Festival, local producer Georgina Pope lamented the lost opportunity.
She pointed to the Thai government's generous film incentive system, which she claimed added up to $US4.4 million ($6.6 million) in savings for the White Lotus project.
The financial details have not been disclosed and the Tourism Authority of Thailand did not confirm that number but Mr Cheawsamoot agreed the sweeteners offered to the White Lotus team would have amounted to millions.
Tourism authorities and local businesses say it is worth the money that was spent.
They expect to see many times that figure in return in the form of visitor numbers and increased spending.
"In terms of economic returns, we've got high hopes," Mr Cheawsamoot said.
Seeing big stars at your local restaurant
While many guests on Koh Samui have no idea what's going on beyond the sign of the Four Seasons hotel, the crew have been spotted around the island.
Already, searches on Expedia for Thailand have jumped by 50 per cent since the announcement that filming would take place in Koh Samui, Phuket and Bangkok.
Local restaurant owners Olive Lamlert and Patrick Moukarzel have had several visits from White Lotus cast and crew.
"It's very cool and very surprising. And the nice thing is that they came back because they like it. So that means a lot," Patrick said.
The couple say some stars of the show have also popped by.
"I was excited because it was Aimee [Lou Wood] who plays the role of Amy in Sex Education and she's super famous. I'm a big fan!" said Olive.
"And then it was Walton Goggins who is in a lot of HBO series and [2015 superhero film] Ant-Man."
Olive and Patrick are also big fans of the White Lotus series itself.
As former hotel workers, they said they could relate to the battles depicted within the series, which features a dysfunctional hotel chain and the challenges of dealing with inhospitable guests.
"It reflects what we used to do and what we had to deal with the guests," Olive laughed.
"The headache ones, the difficult ones, the nice ones, the drama … although maybe not as much drama as in the show."
Patrick said everyone on the island was excited about the potential economic impact of the series.
"It will be very very good, not only for Samui," he said.
"When you come to Thailand, you come to Samui, you go to Bangkok, you will visit another city or small island. So the whole country will benefit."
The downsides of a big show coming to town
While it's hoped the show will bring in more tourism dollars, some locals are worried about the possible impact of more people arriving on Koh Samui.
Parts of the island have been gripped by a water shortage crisis, which has been blamed on drought conditions and a surge of tourist arrivals post-pandemic.
There's also been an ongoing issue with waste disposal on the island as it struggles to keep up with the 200 tonnes of trash produced per day.
Late last year, Koh Samui had reportedly accumulated about 200,000 tonnes at its main landfill site and authorities were left with no option but to export the problem to the mainland.
Local environmentalist Anon Vatayanon said the Thai government needed to have a plan in place to manage the impacts of tourism on the environment.
"Samui became popular because of its nature — the sea, sand and sun," he said.
"The most important thing is that we protect our main selling points … how we manage wastewater, the quality of the water, the environmental impact from road use and air pollution.
"The movie industry wouldn't be filming here if the environment wasn't nice. If we lose it nobody will come here."
Siripakorn Cheawsamoot from the Tourism Authority of Thailand said any boost in tourism would be managed sustainably.
"Sustainable tourism is our key focus for this coming year," he said.
"That's been the key focus for the Department of Tourism to control and communicate with the filming crew."
'Set-jetting' shaping travel itineraries around the world
Thailand is no stranger to big film and TV productions and the big waves of tourism that often follow.
People still flock to James Bond Island where The Man With The Golden Gun was filmed in the 1970s and Maya Bay is still recovering from the impacts of 2000 adventure drama The Beach.
The Leonardo DiCaprio film sparked controversy due to the impact of the shoot and the influx of tourism on the once pristine sands of the bay at Koh Phi Phi Leh.
The area was eventually closed to visitors in 2018 to allow it to recover from the damage caused by millions of tourists.
But authorities say much has changed in the 24 years since the cult movie was released and many lessons were learnt.
They're now hoping to cash in on a trend known as 'set-jetting' where tourists choose locations based on films and TV shows.
The phenomenon has been attributed to a US$200 million dollar boost to Croatia's economy thanks to Game of Thrones and a 50 per cent increase in inbound tourism to New Zealand following the release of The Lord of the Rings.
According to analysis by travel website Expedia, 44 per cent of travellers last year drew inspiration from movies and TV shows, far outpacing the influence of social media at just 15 per cent.
Last month, a post on the White Lotus official Instagram page promised "unforgettable experiences are in the making at #TheWhiteLotus."

Amazing Thailand Launches “Your Stories Never End” Campaign at Arabian Travel Market 2024
Along with strong thai delegation, comprising a contingent of 64 exhibitors..
Dubai, 7 May 2024 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has launched the latest communication concept, “Amazing Thailand: Your Stories Never End,” at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), where the Thai pavilion presents a contingent of 64 Thai exhibitors at Dubai World Trade Center, United Arab Emirates, from 6-9 May 2024.
Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said , “This is Thailand’s 24th year of participation in the Arabian Travel Market. This year also marks the first time that TAT and the Phuket Tourist Association have strengthened cooperation in presenting exhibitors from Phuket in a dedicated zone under the umbrella of the Thai pavilion.”
The Thai contingent includes 36 exhibitors from Phuket, 22 from Bangkok, three from Krabi, two from Chon Buri (Pattaya) and one from Surat Thani (Ko Samui). These constitute 40 hotels, 11 destination management companies, three wellness and medical service institutes, eight attractions and theme parks, and the Thailand Privilege Card.
At the Thai pavilion, Phuket exhibitors are presented in a dedicated zone with 26 tables, while the rest occupy 36 other tables in the main zone and the Thailand Privilege Card exhibits in a private area. The main entrance boasts a demonstration area of distinctive Thai soft power and a Thai tourism information counter with English and Arabic speaking officers.
Mr. Siripakorn Cheawsamoot, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Europe, Africa, the Middle East, said “Thailand’s presence this year has been strengthened with a very good mix of exhibitors that cater to different customer bases of the Middle East market, especially the established family market and the growing shopping and luxury segments. The strong presence of Phuket underpins its commitment to boost the destinations’ profile as a destination for visitors from the Middle East.”
During the ATM 2024, TAT has scheduled a signing of a strategic partnership agreement with dnata Travel. It has also planned meet-and-greet sessions with Emirates Airlines, WEGO and Qatar Airways, as well as interviews with local media.
TAT also leverages its participation at ATM 2024 with the launch of the new communication concept, Amazing Thailand: Your Stories Never End , held on 6 May for tour operators, airlines, local media and influencers.
Mr. Nithee Seeprae, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, said “This concept encapsulates our commitment to creating unforgettable experiences for every traveller who visits our beloved kingdom. We aim to instil lasting memories and meaningful journeys that will inspire visitors to become storytellers, sharing their own unique tales of Thailand with others around the world.”
To encourage travellers to create never-ending stories in Thailand, TAT will continue to promote the kingdom’s 5F soft-power foundations – Food, Film, Festival, Fight and Fashion – to add value to tourism products and services as well as offer meaningful experiences to travellers.
Some of the highlight experiences travellers can enjoy while in Thailand include wellness, hidden-gem cities, and world-class events.
In 2023, Thailand welcomed 28 million visitors, generating a revenue of 1.2 trillion Baht. Of these, 651,049 visitors from the Middle East, a 28% increase compared to the pre-COVID year of 2019.
For 2024, TAT has set a target of generating 3 trillion Baht, with 1.92 trillion Baht coming from international tourism and 1.08 trillion Baht from domestic tourism. These include over 1.11 million travellers from the Middle East and more than 106 billion Baht revenue.
