In addition to staying caffeinated, guests at the Holualoa Inn enjoy perks like tours of the orchards and roasting mills.

Don't Forget: Since you won't want to miss all that the Big Island has to offer (and since you'll be plenty wired to tackle it), check with your hosts before planning your excursions. They're happy to help you arrange outings to the local beaches and trails.

The Greer Farm | Daingerfield, TX

This working farm is built around family activities for farmers of every age. Your bitty agrarians will get their farm fix by feeding chickens, gathering eggs, feeding the cows and horses and learning about the daily operation of a farm. And at the end of a long day in the fields or at the barn, what could be better than jumping into the lake (or if it’s cooler temperatures, taking a kayak, paddleboat, or canoe out for a spin)? Top off the day with a round of s’mores at the fire pit, and there’s no doubt your crew will be sleeping soundly.

Words we live by, as farmers ..

These beliefs guide us day in and day out, from sunup to sundown. If you have a moment, please read. Who knows? Maybe they’ll inspire you to go out and live off the land like we do.

I believe a man’s greatest possession is his dignity, and that no calling bestows this more abundantly than farming.

I believe hard work and honest sweat are the building blocks of a person’s character.

I believe that farming, despite its hardships and disappointments, is the most honest and honorable way a man can spend his days on this earth.

I believe farming nurtures the close family ties that make life rich in ways money can’t buy.

I believe my children are learning values that will last a lifetime and can be learned in no other way.

I believe farming provides education for life and that no other occupation teaches so much about birth, growth, and maturity, in such a variety of ways.

I believe many of the best things in life are indeed free: the splendor of a sunrise, the rapture of wide-open spaces, the exhilarating sight of your land greening each spring.

I believe true happiness comes from watching your crops ripen in the field, your children grow tall in the sun, your whole family feel the pride that springs from their shared experience.

I believe that by my toil, I am giving more to the world than I am taking from it, an honor that does not come to all men.

I believe my life will be measured ultimately by what I have done for my fellowman, and by this standard I fear no judgment.

I believe when a man grows old and sums up his days, he should be able to stand tall and feel pride in the life he’s lived.

I believe in farming because it makes all this possible.

Cabot Creamery Co-op

family farm tours near me

Liberty Hill Farm is one of the voices representing the family farm owners of Cabot Creamery Co-operative. We take great pride in spreading the word about the great Cabot products to whoever will listen. Fortunately for us, the products speak for themselves. Cabot Cheddar Cheese has won every major award for taste and our Cabot Butter is a blue ribbon winner too.

Liberty Hill and Cabot Highlights Liberty Hill Farm participates in Cabot’s Open Farm Events held over the years and our story is available on Cabot’s website, among the online virtual farm tours . Beth and our cow, Larue, were featured in a Cabot Creamery Co-operative commercial that aired on TV.  View the Hug a Farmer video here. In December 2013 Beth went with other Cabot Farmers on the Cabot Creamery Co-operative Gratitude tour in New York City to tout the Cabot goods—singing their praises from the rooftops!

The One & Only Robeth Holstein Herd  Robeth —a combination of our first two names—is the coined prefix for our registered herd. Robeth Holsteins are known for their excellent genetics and have been honored with the Progressive Breeder Registry Award from the Holstein Association for the past 30 years. While the numbers vary, we generally have 320 head of animals all together: cows, calves and heifers, with 120 of those being the milking cows.

Good Cow Genes When we bought the farm from John Hunt, a premier dairy breeder in the 1920s and ’30s, he had a cow named Pearl—a direct descendent of the famous Maryland dairy herd named Dunloggin. Most of our current herd descends from Pearl. Our cows’ lineage has been traced back to the 1880s when they were imported from Holstein Friesland, an area between Germany and the Netherlands.

All are welcome.

ASAP is committed to equity and inclusion at all of our events. Please be open and considerate as you interact with farmers and fellow attendees. Read ASAP’s Equity Statement for more context.

Find Out More About

Farms on the 2024 farm tour.

Farms for the 2024 tour will be announced in summer 2024.

Sponsoring the Farm Tour

ASAP’s Farm Tour is the premier farm event in the region. As a sponsor, you gain visibility for your business and connect with the region’s passion for local food. Contact Nora Scheff, nscheff@asapconnections.org , to learn more about how to showcase your support of local food and farms.

Volunteering for the Farm Tour

Every year we need volunteers to help us staff the tour. Spend one afternoon (11:30–5 p.m.) welcoming visitors at a participating farm, and then tour for free on the day you aren’t working. Sign up for ASAP’s volunteer list to be notified of opportunities.

Tips for the Tour

Make an itinerary. Choose two to four farms to visit each day, allowing at least an hour at each farm in addition to travel time. Please be respectful and only visit farms during tour hours.

Map your trip. Plan your route in advance and print directions between farms. GPS and cell phone service can be unreliable for some farms and rural roads.

Pack supplies. Be prepared with drinking water, sunscreen and hats, closed-toe walking shoes, hand sanitizer, bug spray, a cooler, an umbrella or rain jacket, cash, and a camera.

Leave dogs at home. Pets can pose food safety threats, damage plants, and are dangerous to livestock.

Bring the whole family. The Farm Tour is a great activity for visitors of all ages. Look for family-friendly activities in farm descriptions and note which tours are best suited for those with limited mobility.

Enjoy a picnic or meal on the farm. Look for “Enjoy a meal” in the farm descriptions to see which farms have food. Some farms accept debit/credit, but not all; plan to bring enough cash. Farms also make great picnic spots, so bring a blanket.

Visiting Farms Outside the Farm Tour

Many local farms welcome visitors for tours, u-pick, and special events throughout the year. Search ASAP’s Local Food Guide for more farms to visit throughout the seasons.

Our History

Hidwell Family Farm was started by Ann Ogilvie back in 1988 off a dirt road called Hidwell Place off of Blaney Franks Road. She had farm camps for kids of all ages to come and learn about farm life. She partnered with schools and 4H programs to host field trips and day camps on the farm to do farm tours and teach children & their families about animals. She had ducks, chickens, sheep, goats, horses, barn cats, and more. She sectioned off pieces of her property as she got older and 3 of her children built houses and raised their families on the farm and helped run it. She eventually stopped hosting the farm tours and camps so she could spend more time with her family. Now, two generations later, her grandkids want to carry on the farm experience she created through farm tours and activities.

11 Farm and Ranch Stays for Families

Want to escape the city for a bit and share the beauty of nature with your family? Camping is great, but it isn’t your only option. Across the country, farm and ranch stays offer guests the chance to slow down, embrace the great outdoors, experience another way of life and learn about where food comes from.

From tranquil, family-run farms to large-scale ranch operations, these stays offer an enticing balance of comfortable accommodations, hands-on agriculture experiences, and cool outdoor activities. Some destinations put you within easy reach of a major city, some feel like they’re in the middle of nowhere, but all are sure to leave your family with great memories.

Windy Hill Farm & Preserve

Loudon, Tennessee

Windy Hill Farm

Windy Hill Farm & Preserve is 650 acres of fun next to the Tennessee River, about 45 minutes outside of Knoxville. Staying here is an all-inclusive experience. Whether you choose to book accommodations in the Water Tower Cabins, The Lodge, or The Farmhouse, you’ll get three daily meals and non-alcoholic beverages included. Those meals are made with as many ingredients as possible from the property’s garden. Plus, guests have complimentary access to unguided activities such as mountain bike riding, nature trail hiking, yard games, and nightly bonfires. That’s far from the only entertainment—there are additional opportunities for beekeeping, fishing, archery, kayaking, and more. A boutique hunting preserve, Windy Hill is also famous for its quail hunting. windyhillfarmtn.com

Barnard, Vermont

Twin Farms

At this high-end, 300-acre property, you can fully relax—not only are your breakfasts, lunches, and dinners covered, but also activities and evening canapés. There’s probably more to do here than you have time for with biking, hiking, swimming, canoeing, skiing, fly fishing, and a whole lot else available on-site. When you want to take things slower, you can take part in some of Twin Farms’ wellness classes or bathe in the Japanese furo tub. You may just want to unwind in your room, since each type of accommodation is cozy, beautifully designed, and decorated with museum-quality art. Bear in mind that this resort is for ages 14 and up only. twinfarms.com

Carmel Valley Ranch

Carmel, California

family farm tours near me

Carmel Valley Ranch is like summer camp, but leveled up and refined. The property has an on-site farmstead complete with an organic garden, apiary, hen house, and corral (check out the goats and horses). If you want to try some of Carmel Valley Ranch’s self-produced food, pop over to Valley Kitchen, where the menu includes dishes using honey, cheese, salts, eggs, fruits and vegetables from the property. All of the accommodations are suites with a fireplace and private deck of their own. carmelvalleyranch.com

Fort Lewis Lodge and Farm

Millboro, Virgina

Fort Lewis Lodge, VA

It’s easy to leave the real world behind at Fort Lewis Lodge and Farm, a 3,300-acre retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains. This family-owned establishment is a working farm that plenty of chickens, pigs, goats, and horses call home—you can say hi to them and meander the vegetable garden if you’d like. If the weather is right, you have to get out on the water by taking a dip in the swimming hole, or floating or paddling down the river. If it’s a little cooler out, you may want to spend some time in the wood-fired sauna. Note that the property is only open April through October. Dinner and breakfast are included all rooms and cabins. fortlewislodge.com

Flora, Indiana

Heritage Farm, Indiana

Other fun farm activities include UTV rides, hay rides, and hiking. Kids are welcome to help with farm chores like collecting eggs. There are different accommodation options here depending on what kind of stay you want, from the 1850s log cabin to tent camping. heritagefarmevents.com

Lone Mountain Ranch

You’re only an hour’s drive from Yellowstone National Park at Lone Mountain Ranch. And it’s the full Montana experience, with horseback riding, fly fishing, skiing, hiking, and more. Kids in particular will love the chance to do some 3-D archery or tackle the ropes challenge course. But really, horses are the highlight—the ranch has more than 100 of them. Guests are welcome to visit the barn and treat the horses to some carrots. You can also plan your trip for the summer to catch the property’s iconic Tuesday night rodeo. At Lone Mountain Ranch, there are a variety of cabin options, which range in size from one to six bedrooms. For dining, farm-to-table food is on the menu with ingredients grown or sourced locally. lonemountainranch.com

Stony Creek Farmstead

Walton, New York

Stony Creek Farmsetead

Stony Creek Farmstead is family owned and operated, and committed to free-range pasturing for its animals, which include cows, sheep, and pigs. Booking a stay here allows you to participate in the simple pleasures of farm life as you collect some eggs for breakfast, cook meals on your wood stove, take open-air showers, and hike the hills and valley. This is the sort of place where your family can really unplug, as all the platform tents where overnight guests can stay are off-grid. Carve out some time to join a guided farm tour on Saturdays at 11 am so you can learn more about what makes this little hideaway so special. stonycreekfarmstead.com

Rancho de Los Caballeros

Wickenburg, Arizona

Rancho de los Caballeros

At Rancho de Los Caballeros, the dude ranch gets the luxury treatment. Spanning 13,300 acres in the Sonoran Desert, this destination started as a guest ranch in 1948. Today, visitors can enjoy walking or horseback riding through nature trails, trap and skeet shooting, jeep and ATV tours to ghost towns and abandoned mines. You can embrace the cowboy spirit with other activities like sunset bonfire cookouts, boot branding, and tractor rides. Rancho de Los Caballeros also has a fully supervised kids’ club with age-appropriate ranch activities. ranchodeloscaballeros.com

Tanque Verde Ranch

Tanque Verde, Arizona

Tanque Verde Ranch

Tanque Verde, a 45-minute drive outside of Tucson, was established in 1868, but its comfortable salas and casitas have been brought up to modern times. The entertainment options seem endless, with a wide variety of horse rides and experiences, hiking, biking, archery, and fishing. You’ll want to check the ranch’s schedule, which is jam-packed every day with guest activities and presentations. There’s even a daily kids program where children join groups with specific activities based on their age. Something you definitely don’t want to miss: The cowboy cookout on Wednesdays and Saturdays where your family can fill up on homestyle barbecue and listen to live music. tanqueverderanch.com

Virtual Field Trips

A virtual field trip is a one-hour, private tour of our farm using an online meeting service such as Zoom, or a customized, pre-recorded video teachers can access online.

This virtual tour of the farm is led by a seasoned Gorman education staff member (plus camera crew). The farm educator will guide students through a lesson with visual demonstrations and thoughtful questions. This live experience can be customized, so that you can be sure your students witness what is pertinent to your classroom work. Students are encouraged to ask questions during the tour, so they can stay engaged with what interests them. If your field trip will be pre-recorded, students can send in their questions before we film the tour. The virtual field trip experience is enhanced with pre and post activities, and optional to-go kits are available to allow for hands-on observation and scientific thinking at home or in the classroom.

OPEN HOUSE SATURDAYS!

Our little farm....

We live here, work here, and play here! Our family is blessed to live on the farm; it’s truly a unique experience. We want The Francisco Family Farm to be a place where you can relax and soak in all the love that our animals naturally give and receive.

How it Started...

When we moved our family to Matawan in 2020, we had no idea that a year later we would be running an animal petting farm out of our backyard. We started adding animals to our space and inviting friends and family over to watch them play. When we saw the happiness, joy and giggles our animals brought others, we knew we had to expand these good feelings to the rest of the community.

Our Goal...

Our goal is to provide people with a better understanding of our animals with hands-on education and knowledge on how to better care for them. But most of all, we want The Francisco Family Farm to be a place where you can relax and soak in all the love that our animals naturally give and receive.

Our Wish...

We hope you leave here with a little more knowledge about animals than you came in with. We hope you take with you the refreshed and happy feelings from spending time making memories with our animals.

We are still growing...

Our little farm began in 2021 and we have been working hard to make a happy place for our animal family. Stay tuned for new and exciting events!
