Born and raised in East London, Singer-Songwriter Rose Gray, is known for creating her own sonic landscape merging a blend of 90's dance melodies and 00’s indie-pop vocals. Her first album ‘dancing, drinking, talking, thinking’ was released in 2021 which included the single “Save Your Tears” which was crowned Tune of The Week by Radio 1 tastemaker Claro Amfo. The track, being a shot of serotonin in a cocktail of fizzing pop, power choruses and UK heritage genres, instantly won over NME who profiled Rose, praising her for her “youthful playfulness” and “screamadelica-inspired anthemic rave-pop” - and i-D predicted that she “could single handedly revive Britpop for a new generation”. Rose’s collaborated with Grammy Award-winning producer Alex Metric and multi-instrumentalist Ghost Culture on her recent EP, Synchronicity, which is a celebration of that heady intoxication under strobe lights which showcases her soulful vocals, pop beats and her love of the nightlife. Alongside Melanie C, Self Esteem and other vocalists, Rose Gray features on the track 'Call Me A Lioness'. A new song to support the England’s national Women's football Team for the World Cup. Last year Rose performed at The Great Escape, Mighty Hoopla and Radio 1's Big Weekend, to name a few. She kicked off festival season with the release of her Dee-Lite sampling, dancefloor anthem 'Happiness’.

Atwood Magazine - For the Love of Music

In Search of the Good Life: A Conversation with Rose Gray

Rose Gray © Harris Dickinson

British singer/songwriter Rose Gray dives into the creation of her debut EP and its visuals, the power of honesty in music, and turning music into therapy.

I n Rose Gray’s debut single, she talked about people’s eternal search for the “Good Life.” Lyrics referenced a “ modern day hippie, hair’s all messy, in [their] ex’s baggy tee, ” “ waiting tables for [their] money, ” while Gray offered heartfelt and warm words to the song’s subject: “ Give like you got nothing to borrow, ” “ live, live, live that good life. ” The video for the song, made entirely by Gray, featured her friends and family  in an intimate and warm setting, sharing stories we never get to hear but guiding us through the wide spectrum of human emotion.

In her sophomore single “Blue,” Gray taps into one of the most complex and difficult situations: Caring for someone you love andwanting to help them, but not being able to do so. In order to re-create the strong bonds of friendship she sings about, Gray drove out to her hometown and filmed scenes that brought her childhood back to life, interweaving them with snapshots of Gray’s present-day reality. By the end of the video, you feel like you’ve had as much access to Gray’s life as the friend she’s depicted with.

Rose Gray - Blue Single Art

This feeling of intimacy and honesty is at the crux of Rose Gray’s music. Through her smokey vocals and beautifully transparent lyrics, Gray invites you to take a peek into her own life while also creating something that can be highly applicable to your own. Her music envelops you in a familiar, comfortable hug, as cozy and introspective as drinking warm tea by a fireplace during the early hours of the morning. She has no problem baring it all right from the start of her career, and by doing so creates a unique bond between listener and artist.

2019 is about to be a huge year for Rose Gray, with her debut single “Good Life” released in January and her debut EP,  Blue, Lately set for release in March. Gray’s debut headline show is also set for the end of March, and these are certainly only a few of the great things she’s set to accomplish this year.

Atwood Magazine talked to the British singer/songwriter to dive into the creation of her debut EP and its visuals, the power of honesty in music, and turning music into therapy.

A CONVERSATION WITH ROSE GRAY

Rose Gray: I think I was taught that making music was really normal. My Pop has such great musical taste, so I grew up listening to such eclectic music but I think it must have formed my little brain… I’ve always just loved music. I also wanted to be an actress quite a lot when I was younger, even though my parents warned me about the acting career (laughs) . I think just growing up creatives, like they’re not just actors, they make films, I think I just copied them a little bit (laughs) . Probably thought it was normal to be inclined that way.

Rose Gray: I’ve always sort of sung, and when I got to 15 or 16 I was thinking “Oh, I think I actually might do this”, I’m 23 now so I’ve been making music for a long time. It actually started to click two years ago, when I knew what I wanted to say and had had enough experience that I could write about myself and stop writing about little characters and stuff.

Rose Gray: It’s called Blue, Lately. I wrote it over the last six months, they’re all just really honest and are little poems that started on my phone. I was working with Frank Colucci, who’s a drummer, musician, and producer. I brought all my songs in to him, half-finished, or finished, or poetry, and we sort of formed the EP together. It felt just really natural, it was the first time I was like “This is really me”, all the words and what I’m singing about. “Blue” is about my best mate, and they’re all just really close to my heart.

Rose Gray: I think my style is very conversational, I’m real, and it doesn’t glamourise anything, it’s just really honest. I love soul music, I think it’s really soulful, but musically I think it’s a real mix of everything I grew up on. Portishead are a real influence musically. It’s sort of out there, there’s a string section, there’s a mix of hip hop beats… The EP is like my head, I think. I’m really read to bring it out, honestly, it’s a great feeling.

Rose Gray: I’m really feeling it right now. Social media, I love it and hate it all at once (laughs) . And I sort of noticed it’s so bad. Even me and my mates just talk about it, I am a little bit scared of what’s happening with our heads because of social media (laughs) . But yeah, that lyric is about our poor egos who are having to continuously battle comparing ourselves to other people.

Watch: “Good Life” – Rose Gray

Rose Gray: Yeah, I’m more worried for my little brother who’s 10 years old and he’s obsessed with his phone.

Rose Gray: It actually happened by accident. I’m really into film and cinema and always loved the idea of making a visual but never thought I’d be able to do it. I started doing this film with my friends when they came out to my house, I had a tripod and I filmed them. I’m really inspired by Andy Warhol, his screen tests, and I just said to a few of my mates like “Can I have a chat with you? Literally don’t pose, just be really natural”. I patched in my friends, then I brought in my family, and I was actually making that little clip for “Good Life”, but really organically it formed into a whole video. I just really wanted to make it work, and I taught myself to edit. It was really nice to do something that’s really different to my music.

Rose Gray: My boyfriend’s an actor, and he’s done some directing, I had the idea for the music video and a few people coming onboard to make it and I was like “Do you know what, I think I’m actually going to make it myself”. The narrative’s there, it’s kind of literally what the song is about, growing up. Honestly, when I watched it I was like “Oh my gosh that’s literally myself” like that little girl. All the references to the 2000s, 2005, 2006, singing karaoke… So I had the idea and we spent the weekend in Walthamstow, northeast London, and literally just shot everything, sunrise, sunset, did it all within two days. It was really lovely to work with my boyfriend and to see my little idea come to life. It’s not meant to feel like a music video video, it’s still got the visual of the home style video. I’m really proud of it, I like it.

Watch: “Blue” – Rose Gray

Rose Gray: Honestly, I think I have it sometimes but I’ve noticed it in a few people. Good life for me means like inner beauty. I’ve seen that in some of my mates, and that’s originally what I wrote “Good Life” about. I can’t even explain it, some people have this beautiful energy and I hope I have that one day (laughs) .

Rose Gray: “Why do You Have to Go Away”, out of all the tracks, it’s basically all live instruments, the drums and keys were recorded live. It’s a bit of a mix of a few things, it’s a bit old school, it’s got that kind of Frank Ocean kind of vibe. I felt a real connection to that song and I think it’s one of those songs that you can have on and it’ll grow on you.

Rose Gray: I know (laughs) . You know what, I was thinking that the other day. It doesn’t scare me, I think that’s the kind of artist I am, I am so honest, I’m so emotional and I wear my heart on my sleeve. Being honest, I think it’s just like, I’ve made a lot of music and I wanted to make sure my EP is fully a representation of me and really authentic. It is scary a little bit, opening my heart out to the world, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. A little bit like Lily Allen, she was really honest, and I feel like that’s quite like me.

Rose Gray: I hope so. I grew up, and I still love her to this day, on Amy Winehouse. Her lyricism to me, is so honest, heartbreakingly honest, and that’s kind of what I aspire to. You listen to her music and you feel her pain, and you feel her beauty, you feel everything. Because she believes it, when she’s singing it she believes it, she’s there, so one day that’s what I aspire to. Make music that really makes you feel.

Rose Gray: Wow, thank you. She’s the queen. I don’t think anyone will ever come to her level.

Rose Gray © Harris Dickinson

Rose Gray: A lot of the stuff that I write is I think it in my head then I have to write it down on my phone. It’s generally just human feelings. A lot of my music is obviously like I’m feeling a bit shit, or feeling a bit sad, or missing someone, or writing about someone I love that I’m worried about. I think it’s just human instinct, it’s sort of my therapy writing it down, getting it out of my head.

Rose Gray: I don’t think so!

Rose Gray: So I’ve actually just formed my band and we just had our first meeting. My live show is not slow, but mid-tempo, and we’re putting a bit of a pace behind it. I think it’s going to be very honest and raw but you can have a little dance as well (laughs) .

Rose Gray: Oh my gosh. That is really hard. I think I would love to write with Nas and André 3000. I think Mark Ronson, I think he’s making some amazing music.

Artist Spotlight: Rose Gray

East London born and bred, Rose Gray emulates a gloriously colourful amalgamation of musical influences. From the obvious Primal Scream and Happy Mondays references to the more eclectic sounds of Nitin Sawhney , Rose Gray ’s distinctive musical stylings speak to her equally animated surroundings. Having grown up on 90’s indie, dance and alternative classics, it’s no wonder that, despite her arrestingly soulful voice, Rose Gray has leaned more towards the cathartic and ecstatic feeling that comes from swelling choruses that are orchestrated to make you move . Since her first sombre, jazz-infused single ‘Good Life’, a lot has happened for Rose Gray in terms of her growth as an artist.  Her single ‘Same Cloud’, released last month, saw her reassessing her sound and marked the beginning of a new era. Showcasing a playful and jarringly sunny side to her music with a dash of an “I don’t care what you think of me” spirit, this change in direction is unsurprising when you consider that she was first compelled to make music whilst in the middle of a dance floor. Carefree and expansive, Rose Gray ’s music recreates that liberating feeling that inflected the best part of music throughout the 90’s.

We caught up with Rose Gray for this edition of our  Artist Spotlight series , where we showcase up-and-coming artists and give them a chance to talk about their music.

What’s been the most enlightening experience for you during lockdown, or the most positive thing you’ve taken from the very bizarre, collective experience of lockdown?

I learnt to produce and make little weird beats. I spent months just messing around on Logic.  Something I’m so surprised I hadn’t tried before. I’ve actually produced a track on my upcoming Mixtape, which I made in lockdown. I guess also just time to just exist and be at one- no rushing about just living- eating, making music, and sleeping. I enjoyed the simplicity, I’m taking that from this time.

Your music is undoubtedly influenced by your hometown London, is this something that’s done with intent or is it intrinsically mixed up in your art?

I guess my upbringing has direct coloration with my experiences and finds its way into my lyrics.  I grew up in a part of London that in my eyes is slightly confused, don’t get me wrong I love it. But it’s confusing, you have the traditional east Londoners and then you have people who live the more suburban lifestyle. Nearly everyone I grew up with stayed in their suburban bubble. I rebelled this, I always craved the energy of London. I started going out to parties and raves at 15/16. I would do anything to get on the Victoria line …. I formed an incredibly eccentric friendship group when I left for college in South London. I think this is where my true understanding of my hometown started. I feel like I’ve seen nearly every corner of London because of them and that has definitely shaped the music I make. I’ve had a lot of fun in my city.

What motivates you to create music and is it something that you’ve always been compelled to do?

I feel like I’ve always been very connected to my feelings and my surroundings. I was a very sensitive dramatic child. I loved telling stories, I loved performing and I loved music. So it kinda just happened. If I’m honest a few years back I felt like maybe doing music wasn’t for me, I’d made over 100 songs, nobody really cared, I was working loads of jobs and paying too much that I stopped seeing a future in music. But I think music calls you. The moment I stopped writing I felt so far away from myself. When I’m making music I feel like I’m doing what I’m meant to be doing- there’s no other way to describe it really.

Your single ‘Same Cloud’ charts the delightfully bittersweet feeling that comes post break up where you’re having an awful time but you take some solace in knowing – or at least hoping – the other person is too. The lyrics “And I never meant to cause any pain on you/But I guess I like the feeling that you’re feeling quite blue/And as I look out my window, and a rainbow falls through/Maybe it’s time/We got over us too” are just like a gut punch of accuracy. What inspired you to focus on this topic?

I was really missing someone. They were in California, thousands of miles away from me in rainy cold london. I feel bad saying this because I don’t think you should ever wish something shitty on someone, but I was hoping they were feeling like me. There is also a part of the song that is like, ‘ you know what maybe we need to get over this, what’s the point staying in this place..maybe it’s time for a new day..a rainbow even’. When a relationship breaks down it takes a bit of time but you get to this place where you’re like, ok I’m ready now to move on with my life. I hope we are both ok..”maybe it’s time.. we got over us too” I hope that comes through in the song, it’s not all gloom. Clear skies and rainbows are round the corner.

What was the inspiration for the ‘Same Cloud’ music video? How did the concept come about?

So I have quite an obsession, maybe I could call it a hobby. I love watching documentaries about the history of London. I found one about Shadwell basin in Wapping /East London. The next day I went to see it, it was on the hottest day in July – I think it was 36 degrees Celsius. I fell in love with it. Right there and then I decided I wanted to shoot something there, we waited for another sunny day, woke up at 3.30 am and filmed myself walking around it singing. I had this mad idea of getting into the basin and swimming into the middle, I changed my mind in the morning as I realised it was connected to the Thames.  I wanted to create a simple visual where you could see my getting over a relationship. Dancing and interacting with strangers at 6am. It’s kinda weird but is very much where I was at in my life.

How would you describe your music making style? Is it slow and methodical or more free and erratic?

I write lyrics on my phone usually on my way to the studio and if I’m at home I might just blurt them out or play something on guitar. In the studio for me it’s always a vibe, I’m very free in my writing style. Lyrics, a vibe then melody is how I usually do it. I don’t stick to one thing though.

What would you say is the biggest thing you’ve learnt about yourself through your process of making music? Has it highlighted anything unexpected or amplified things you already knew about yourself?

I’ve learnt that my sensitivity is my tool. I’ve also learnt/ still learning there are no rules, I was for too long trying to make songs that I thought the world would want to hear… but now I’m making music that I love, that I want to dance and cry too. I love what I do, I’m also not afraid of failing because I love the music I make. I’m proud of it.

What’s next for yourself, are you actively working towards an EP/LP or going with the flow in terms of musical output?

I have a finished mixtape set to release Jan 2021. I’m working on creating some visuals. My second single came out on October 9th ( a cover of Saint Etienne ’s ‘Nothing Can Stop Us’ ). I’m also writing a lot for the new year and beyond and just trying to stay sane through this bizarre time we’re all living through.

One of the UK’s most exciting rising stars and dance-pop icon on the rise, Rose Gray, has just dropped her highly anticipated new single, ‘Afraid Of Nothing’ featuring a collaboration with French artist Kungs. The new single follows the success of her standalone single ‘Happiness’ and the ‘Higher Than The Sun’ EP. release earlier this year. ‘Afraid Of Nothing’ continues Rose’s impressive streak in creating some of the most memorable dance-pop tracks. Every single release sees Rose Gray tap her toes in different forms of nostalgic dance music and we are totally here for it. Be sure to give the brilliant music video directed by Harris Dickinson a watch below as well. It sees Rose as a runaway bride racing through the streets of Hackney. Rose is undeniably a rising star worth keeping an eye on. She’s destined for big things and her talent truly deserves recognition from everyone! About the new single Rose & Kungs mention:

“I was on a writing trip in Paris and was feeling really anxious about everything. I feel as creatives we all live in fear, fear of not being good enough or fear that what we have to say isn’t important. I got into a session with Kungs, and we finished Afraid of Nothing to give us something to dance through the fear, and help embrace it as just another part of being human. I’m in love with this record.” Kungs adds,   “I’ve been a fan of Rose’s work for a long time. I love her energy and how she shares her emotions. There’s always this strong and romantic poetic touch that I love in her songs. It was a pleasure for me to add my sounds to her world.”

‘ Afraid Of Nothing ‘ is out now on all platforms via Play It Again Sam.

Rose Gray has shared her new single ‘Prettier Than You’ ahead of this week’s London show

rose gray tour

Rose Gray has dropped her new single, ‘Prettier Than You’.

Following on from summer EP ‘Synchronicity’, the track arrives ahead of her headline set at London’s Nighttales Loft on 29th September.

“‘Prettier Than You’ is about a beautiful figurative stranger,” she explains. “I wrote the song in Bristol, I was sitting in the studio nursing a broken heart. I was on dating apps at the time and couldn’t quite believe how many beautiful people there were on them. The words for this song just sort of blurted out like an unconscious stream on the mic. There’s an ethereal energy with a little New Order and Ray Of Light sprinkle. I love it. It spreads a little light on heartbreak for there are many more prettier fish in the sea. I’ve been waiting a hot minute to release this tune and I’m excited to let her go…”

Check it out below. The new single will also feature on the FIFA 2023 soundtrack, which is released tomorrow.

Arrivée | Vuelta Femenina 2024 The Cycling Podcast

We’re looking at the first ‘Grand Tour’ of the season in this Arrivée episode from The Cycling Podcast Féminin. Rose Manley and Denny Gray of The British Continental pick out the big stories from a week of varied and exhilarating racing. SD Worx came to the race looking for redemption after being narrowly denied the Vuelta title in last year’s controversial edition, but their leader Demi Vollering had a lot to prove after a disappointing Spring campaign. Her closest rivals - Kasia Niewiadoma and Elisa Longo Borghini - had both already taken landmark wins this year and were on confident form.  There’s also plenty to discuss away from the GC race, in a course that offered up high mountains, a team time trial, breakaway success and chaos causing crosswinds. Amelia Gray’s Rose-Filled Light-Up Dress at the 2024 Met Gala Was Perfectly on Theme

Tonight, model of the moment Amelia Gray Hamlin made her Met Gala debut—and in breathtakingly romantic style. The 22-year-old fashion star, who has walked the runway for the likes of Chanel, Miu Miu, and Jean Paul Gaultier, stepped onto this year’s enchanted forest red (or rather, green) carpet in one of the most memorable looks of the season: a light-up terrarium dress from Jun Takahashi’s sensational spring 2024 show , with sheer fabric revealing the bundles of roses and delicate butterflies encased within the gown’s structure.

“I was one of those little girls who would go to my friend’s apartment on the Upper East Side, and we would take binoculars and watch all the looks get out of the sprinter van,” Hamlin told Vogue at a fitting appointment last week, where she practiced walking up and down the stairs of the office in her sculptural dress.

Not only was the look—which was styled by Danyul Brown, and accessorized with Messika jewelry—perfectly on point for the red carpet theme of “ The Garden of Time ,” it also dovetailed with the Costume Institute exhibition this year’s Met Gala is honoring: “ Sleeping Beauties: Awakening Fashion .” Visitors to the exhibition will note another of the terrarium dresses—also featuring roses—takes pride of place in the show, and was even featured on the exhibition posters.

“Wrapped in transparency, this collection appears as deep mist,” Takahashi wrote in his show notes for the spring 2024 collection. “Garments flow like a fading memory; a surreal world appearing and disappearing in the dark.” It’s a sentiment that couldn’t be more perfect for this year’s theme—and one that Hamlin firmly nailed for her first Met Gala red carpet.
