Slayer are a thrash metal band from Huntington Park, California, U.S., formed in 1981 by guitarists Jeff Hannemann and Kerry King.

One of the highly-revered ‘big four’ of the thrash metal genre, alongside their contemporaries Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax, Slayer have always been defined by two thing; the ferocity and speed with which they play, and the deeply dark nature of their thematic approach and lyricism, where pretty much nothing has been off limits - everything from Satanism to necrophilia has cropped up over the course of their ten records to date. The group is currently comprised of King on guitar, bass-playing frontman Tom Araya, drummer Paul Bostaph and guitarist Gary Holt; founding guitar player Hannemann passed away last year. The band made their name with their third album, “Reign in Blood”, in 1986; that record’s kind-of title track “Raining Blood” is effectively their signature song.

They’ve continued to both entertain, influence and provoke in equal measure ever since; from (albeit inadvertently) managing to release a record entitled “God Hates Us All” on September 11th, 2001 to routinely being accused of Nazi sympathies, Slayer have certainly earned more than their fair share of notoriety, but it’s perhaps in terms of their huge influence on the genre of metal in general that they’ll be best remembered over time; everybody from System of a Down to Slipknot to Darkthrone have attributed some of their style to Slayer over the years, proving their towering stature within the metal community.

Live reviews

Slayer is frighteningly intense live. You could either get your skull cracked open in a mosh pit or from the sheer amplitude of Kerry King’s guitar. But that’s the thrill of attending a Slayer concert.

It is impossible to be anything other than fully engaged at a Slayer show with red lights of doom blaring on the stage, pentagrams and World War II imagery depicted in the background, and stacks of guitar amps blaring in your face at full volume all while trying to avoid getting beat to a pulp in a mosh pit. Slayer’s performance is fast and loud with their songs relying on fast tremolo picking, booming double bass pedals pounding away at the bass drums, and dueling guitars playing chaotic melodies in irregular scales creating dissonant sounds.

Slayer has a unique style of performing by playing at rapidly fast tempos and tuning their guitars to very low pitches getting deeper, heavier sounds. Slayer has gained critical acclaim already being nominated for five grammys, and are considered one of the most influential metal bands having directly inspired the genres of death metal and black metal. The singer, Tom Araya, adds much charisma to Slayer’s style with his death-like screams, and the violent imagery depicted in Slayer’s lyrics puts Slayer in a hardcore level of their own.

It is unpredictable what one might see at a Slayer concert. You might see a fan carving an upside down cross in their skin or you might see someone in a wheelchair crowd surfing, as I saw at my first Slayer concert. One thing you can predict is a mind-blowing thrill of a ride.

Slayer Still Stay True to Roots

Slayer still know how to deliver the goods and deliver them well in a world where so much music has become formulaic. The band performed older and newer numbers such as Angel of Death, South of Heaven and Reign in Blood at a high octane level of energy, all against a backdrop of upside down crosses. During the song Angel of Death, the backdrop also displayed a variation on the Heineken beer logo, showing and paying homage to the late guitar player Jeff Hanneman who passed away last year. What I found most memorable was the pit area, seemingly a sea of fans moshing constantly throughout the set and making it appear as if the floor itself were moving!

Opening for Slayer were thrash and groove metal bands Exodus and Suicidal Tendencies. Both set the stage and night for a great fusion of different yet similar music genres and sub genres. Gary Holt, veteran ax man for Exodus, did double duty churning out guitar solos and riffs for both them and in his gig with Slayer at the end of the night, proof positive that he has truly hit the ground running with the latter band! A grand night out as always with them!

What a crap-hole of a venue. Google maps kept sending us to the VIP entrance (which of course costs more $$$). Parking was a nightmare, it rained and was muddy. Everything was monetized, down to the height of the chairs you were allowed to bring in. Water was allowed in sealed containers only (unopened with the little ring attached, yeah this was wasteful). Wow -- $16 beers, no thanks. $45 per tee-shirt in the merch, even for the opening bands. You have to pay to get closer to the band. Pit tickets were upwards of $200+, what a joke. The cameras and projection screens weren't even turned on until Lamb of God. Beers of fishing quality were being sold for $10 a can, and the good beers were $16 each. My wife got a shot that was $15. Sound was ok. Cannibal Corpse played for a whole 20 minutes. We were up in the lawn-grass area and there was fresh manure spread on the hillside, wafting in our direction. Ironic due to the crappy quality of our experience.

Can't wait for Maryland Deathfest 2019 and Devastation on the Nation 2019-- Two shows that I spent a lot less money on and get a lot more trve cvlt metal out of.

They rocked!!! I saw them in Bakersfield where it was standing room only, and the pit was awesome. That being said, if you're not down for that, you can still stand (mostly) in peace. It was LOUD. Which is AWESOME. But for the songs I didn't know, I put in earplugs to save my hearing just a little. Defnitly at bring at least a pair (I lost mine in the moshpit and had to use beer stained, trampled, earplugs). And the show was great, they keep the intensity going the whole way through. Even my dad, who didn't know a single song, enjoyed the concert just from the intensity in the pit and onstage. Tom engaged the crowd a little, but for the most part it was all about the music. I would've liked an encore, but eh my ears were dead anyways. Overall great show, I can't wait to see them again.

I saw each of the final tour legs that hit Ohio and each was amazingly awesome! The sounds was great. The viewing was great (we had floor), it’s sad for me to think this is the end but I feel like they may do festivals and a one off here or there. I will surely attend! I drag my husband to these shows and he is not a Fuckin Slayer fan at all, but he even admitted these final tours are pretty awesome even though once Fuckin Slayer comes on, it just sounds like one giant song to him until we leave. Lol I disagree, but he did not grow up with them the same as me. I will be a die hard Fuckin Slayer to the end and can’t wait to see what is in store for them in the future! Final Leg Tour Number 9 maybe???? Regardless, I will be there! Fuckin Slaaaaaayyyerrrr!!!!

Slayer came out on stage completely apathetic. Like they couldn't wait to get out of our state! I've been a life long fan since 84' and this was not a great performance. Yes they sounded good stage pyrotechnic were ok,but they played with no emotion or heart at all. Tom got all pissed off over something in the mosh pit. Stopped playing for at least 9 minutes in middle of set. Then cussed out the crowd told off Albuquerque then played 4 more songs cut set short no oncour just walked off stage. What assholes!! People pay a lot of money. For him to do that is bull shot!!don't plan to ever pay for another Slayer show again!

There's few words that can be said about this band and this show that would do them justice.

Slayer is an amazing band overall and I've been listening to them since I was a teenager. I was never disappointed about the quality of their albums.

The show was simply sensational! Besides the sweet music played by the band the stage props were really great.

The fire show was another incredible piece, I really loved how some of the flames were forming a pentagram.

Their band logo burning while they played Angel of Death was really great!

I'm never good with endings, but all I can say is that I loved it!

I know that saying "that was fire!" is a pretty common and basic way of praising something, but considering the actual fire on stage and sparks of energy throughout the show, there really can't be a better way to describe it. They put on one hell of a show. You can see Tom's great sincerity towards the audience in his talks between some songs. They really looked like they enjoyed themselves, and of course the audience did as well. Whole band played great, hard, and LOUD.

FUCKIN SLAAAYYYEEERRRR!!!

(Be prepared to hear that often)

Loud heavy fast sweaty long hair and brilliant time!

I've been a fan of slayer since about 1988 and it was great to go to a gig where everyone was not there filming it instead just taking in the brutal power of Slayer!

All the classics were played with a few new songs off the new record "Repentless" you can't argue when a band like Slayer roll into town turn up no encores and smash through 20 brutally fast thrash classics. I left minus a phone in my sweat soaked t-shirt and absolutely loved this gig.
