Everything Pharrell Williams touches seems to turn to gold, musically speaking, not least of all N.E.R.D, the mega-platinum selling hip hop-rap-pop crossover band that he fronted for over a decade. The band formed from Williams and Chad Hugo (aka production superduo The Neptunes) teaming up with drummer Shae Hayley in 2001, and since then their hit singles such as 'Rockstar', 'Maybe', and 'She Wants To Move', show the funky soulfulness of their bass-driven beats and have firmly secured their popularity.

For all their slick production and genre-hopping creativity, what makes N.E.R.D truly incredible to see live is the sheer, bouncing energy they bring, feeding off their audience to create an electrifying gig experience. Their songs are unmistakably catchy and guarantee to set crowds a-hopping, such as the set staples from their first album 'In Search Of...', such as the uplifting 'Run To The Sun', and the dirty basslines of 'Lapdance'.

When I saw N.E.R.D a few years ago at Brixton Academy, London, they were nothing short of incredible. The hyped-up atmosphere and the musical force of a full live band, teamed with Williams' charisma as a frontman, made the show one of the most fun and exciting I have ever been to. As an extra-special ending to their set, the band invited hundreds of female fans up onto the stage to groove alongside them for their encore, and you could tell it was out of the pure love of the energy from playing live and interacting with their audience. Seeing N.E.R.D live will more than likely surprise you, and certainly will never be a disappointment.

Nowadays Pharrell Williams is known for being a hot-shot, chart-topping producer or the genius behind ‘Happy.’ However, in 2000, he was part of a group known as N.E.R.D. Taking the production know-how he and childhood friend and musical partner-in-crime Chad Hugo had from their other project, The Neptunes, they got into the studio and dropped four albums that spawned a number of hits including ‘Lapdance,’ ‘Everyone Nose (All the Girls Standing in the Line for the Bathroom) and ‘Spaz.’ They have played around the world and also supported Kanye West and the Gorillaz on their tours.

Because of the high energy that N.E.R.D. bring to the stage, they can play any venue and still come up with the same result. Whether playing the smaller clubs in their Virginia Beach hometown or an outdoor stage by the Brooklyn Bridge at midnight, they bring the party wherever they go. The show brings the band, a DJ set up and Shay Haley, who serves as N.E.R.D.’s third member. With the combination of rock beats, a funky bass and turntables, it’s hard to throw the group into a genre, but at this point, that doesn’t really matter because even the wallflowers who hard bust a move get their grooves on to N.E.R.D. And while Pharrell might not have been donning that infamous cowboy hat, he’s got so much swag that any other accessory would be a bonus.

When No one Ever Really Dies, better known as N.E.R.D performed at UC Riverside’s annual Heat Music Festival, they attracted a ton of people to their stage; including me, and it was definitely a worthwhile experience.

Unlike the rest of the crowd, I really didn’t know their songs, especially since it was my friends idea to come to this set, in fact I didn’t know any of their songs. BUT…they really knew how to hype up the crowd, even though most of the crowd were already fans of N.E.R.D. The duo, consisting of Pharrell and Chad Hugo, had a large hype group that seemingly covered the entire stage. With little effort, they got the crowd moving for their song “Spaz,” swinging their arms and rapping along with them. They kept the energy going while performing “You Know What” and “Rockstar.”

In retrospect I’m really glad that I saw them live, because when I went back to listen to their studio sessions it just wasn’t the same. The amount of excitement that they add to their live versions really takes the songs to a whole different level. Also, the performance was truly in Pharrell fashion, giving everything he’s got because it’s what he loves doing most.

Kendrick Lamar made history with his ‘Pop Out: Ken & Friends’ concert in L.A. Here are 12 takeaways from a special night.

It's very rare for one artist to give the world a collective moment. But what Kendrick Lamar did with his Pop Out: Ken & Friends concert at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, CA was historic. The event, which featured opening sets curated by DJ Hed and Mustard, functioned as a moment of appreciation for Kendrick’s city first, and a celebratory burial of Drake second.

The show, which was streaming live on Amazon Prime, featured a wide spectrum of contemporary L.A. acts: Remble, Problem, Blxst, YG, Ty Dolla $ign, Roddy Ricch, Steve Lacy, Tyler, the Creator, Black Hippy, Dr. Dre, and more all made appearances. Kendrick was able to take the momentum he gathered from his beef with Drake, merge it with the burgeoning talent in the city, and create a moment that was hyperspecific and globally impactful at the same time.

Complex was in the building for this moment. We have already written about what we saw inside the venue. Here are some additional takeaways from an evening that will go down in hip-hop history.

“Euphoria” was the perfect opener

Oh, you thought Kendrick was going to take things slow and ease into the beef songs? Nah, he got into his diabolical bag immediately and opened with “Euphoria.” We already knew this song was special when it topped our Best Rap Verse of the Year (So Far) list , but it hit even harder when tens of thousands of people barked along with Kendrick as he rapped every word. “I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress!” It’s a theatrical-ass song, full of dramatic vocal changes and beat switches, and Kendrick pulled all of them off exceptionally well in a live setting, delivering a powerful, dexterous performance with no backing track. It was a hell of a way to start a show, setting the tone for one of the most hater-ass concerts you’ll ever see (and I mean that in the best way possible). — Eric Skelton

This was one of the best crowds you’ll ever see

It’s always frustrating when you see video footage of a historic concert, only to realize that the whole crowd was dead and no one in attendance fully comprehended the magnitude of what they were witnessing. Fortunately, I can assure you that was not the case in LA on Wednesday night. Everyone clearly understood they were there for a once-in-a-lifetime show, and the energy matched the occasion. People were taking shots in the parking lot, moshing on the floor, and loudly singing along to every word. It was a celebration, and they were extremely proud of their city. Outside of sporting events, I’ve never seen more L.A. gear in my life, and for a show of this magnitude in a major American city, it had a very regional feel. You get the sense Kendrick must have been very pleased with the way this crowd showed up. —Eric Skelton

There were some notable LA rappers who weren’t there

Kendrick had almost every notable L.A. artist on stage, from upcoming rappers (Ray Vaughn) to blue-collar vets (G Perico) to burgeoning superstars (Steve Lacy and Mustard.) But there were a couple of notable no-shows, and most could be explained pretty easily. Fans online wondered where Kendrick’s cousin Baby Keem was—but Keem isn’t an L.A. rapper, and this was clearly an L.A. show. 03 Greedo said he was invited but couldn’t make it . Snoop Dogg was on tour in Saskatchewan, Canada, which would explain why he couldn’t perform “Still Dre” with Dr. Dre. The real curious omission was The Game, one of Kendrick’s earliest supporters and a West Coast legend. Not only wasn't he there, but there was not a peep from him online. One explanation: during the height of their conflict, it seemed like Game sided with Drake, posting a curious Instagram post. After Kendrick responded with “Europhia,” Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith sent out his own cryptic message on Twitter, “We saw everybody that showed their hand. This the family. “Meet the Grahams” didn’t meet the cut

Kendrick Lamar’s vicious—some would say “evil”—track “Meet the Grahams” got lost in the mix, thanks to the success of “Not Like Us.” But it’s become a dark horse favorite among rap masochists who don’t mind listening to a six-minute brooding song about Drake being a sexual deviant. So it should be noted that it was the only diss song to not get any play at the concert last night. Admittedly, it’s probably a tough sell for a crowd of 20,000 people. But who would have guessed a song like “Euphoria”—which is very verbose and not an anthem at all—would ring off the way that it did? —Dimas Sanfiorenzo

‘Mr. Morale’ didn’t get its moment

Kendrick might be the bogeyman, but that doesn’t mean he’s Teflon. Some of the most effective disses against Dot have been centered around the polarizing reaction to his last album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers . J. Cole first mentioned it on the now-deleted “7 Minute Drill. ” And Drake resurrected the idea, rapping, “Your last one bricked, you really not on shit” on “Push Ups.”  It seems like maybe there’s a small part of Kendrick that agrees. Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers was the only major label album not to get its moment last night. And considering how Kendrick had the crowd in his hands, it’s curious he didn’t at least try to perform heaters like “N95” or “Silent Hill.” For Kendrick to not play one note from his last album during what is effectively a greatest hits show does seem to imply… something. —Dimas Sanfiorenzo

Kendrick brought back the Nike Shox R4s

Kendrick Lamar hit the stage in a low-key, workmanlike outfit: red hoodie, blue jeans, and white and red sneakers. A clean but menacing look that some have speculated was inspired by Tupac’s 1994 Source Awards fit. The major difference, however, is the footwear: while Pac wore Filas, Kendrick was on stage in Shox R4s, a shoe from 2000 that has become more known for its functionality rather than style. We don’t know what Kendrick was trying to say with this footwear choice but it definitely took some effort: the shoe hasn’t been retroed since 2018. Was this a statement or does he know something we don’t know yet? —Dimas Sanfiorenzo

There can only be so much unity

Drakeo the Ruler had a complicated connection to Inglewood and, infamously, a contentious relationship with YG and his camp. But he was still an L.A. legend, one of the most prominent rappers from the city over the last decade, and the emcee who clearly was on Kendrick's mind when he recorded “Not Like Us.” So the fact that even during this unity show, Drakeo or his brother didn’t get a moment was interesting and just shows how deep some of the tension in the city is. On Twitter, Drakeo’s brother Ralfy the Plug didn’t say much about the snub, but he has been retweeting positive words about The Ruler. —Dimas Sanfiorenzo

Big regional shows might be the future

Yes, artist-backed festivals and concerts have been around for years. It’s not uncommon to see artists put their name on a poster in size 400 font for the love of their respective city, from J. Cole’s Dreamville Festival to Travis Scott’s Astroworld to Drake’s OVO Fest. But this one felt different. The popular artist-run concerts and festivals quickly become co-opted and corporatized to optimize ticket sales. Although there were corporate elements here—shout out to Amazon Music and Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s Gin and Juice pre-mixed cocktail—this felt like a real regional show, where the culture of the city was prioritized. So can this format—where one star unifies a whole sound or scene while maintaining integrity—work in other cities? I think so. Imagine Jay-Z doing something like this with Brooklyn drill acts in the mix? Or Chief Keef rolling out the red carpet for new rappers in Chicago? I think Kendrick might have really cracked something here. —Dimas Sanfiorenzo

Justin Timberlake arrested: What you need to know about the pop star

Justin Timberlake was arrested early Tuesday and is accused of driving while intoxicated on New York’s Long Island

NEW YORK — Justin Timberlake was arrested early Tuesday and is accused of driving while intoxicated on New York’s Long Island. He was released and his next court date is scheduled for July 26, according to the Suffolk County district attorney’s office. Timberlake and his representatives have not commented.

Here’s what you need to know about the 43-year-old singer:

From boy band to R&B

Timberlake began his career at 12, starring in Disney’s "The All-New Mickey Mouse Club" alongside future girlfriend Britney Spears . In 1995, he became a leading presence in what turned into one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, NSYNC.

In 2000, their “No Strings Attached” album sold more than 1.1 million copies in its first day and more than 2.4 million in its first week. That set a world record for more than a decade.

In 2002, the band went on a hiatus that became permanent. Timberlake launched a blockbuster solo career with hits like “SexyBack,” “What Goes Around...Comes Around” and “Suit & Tie.”

His solo debut, the Grammy-award winning “Justified,” was followed by critically acclaimed R&B-pop records including 2006’s “FutureSex/LoveSounds.” It wasn’t until 2018’s folk detour, “Man of the Woods,” that Timberlake’s popularity began to falter.

In March, he released his first new album in six years, the nostalgic “Everything I Thought It Was,” a return to his familiar future funk sound .

On screen and on stage

Timberlake has starred in a number of films and is best known for his role of Sean Parker in the Oscar-award winning “The Social Network” and for starring with Mila Kunis in the 2011 rom-com, “Friends with Benefits.” Since 2016, he has had a leading role in the animated “Trolls” franchise as the voice of Branch.

He has won 10 Grammys. In 2017, he was nominated for an Oscar for his song “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” from “Trolls.” He has won four Emmys for his various contributions to “Saturday Night Live.”

In April, Timberlake kicked off his “The Forget Tomorrow” world tour, which runs through Dec. 20. He is scheduled to perform in Chicago on Friday before heading to New York City’s Madison Square Garden next week.

The personal and the public

Timberlake grew up in Tennessee, raised by his mother, Lynn Harless — who is credited with coining the NSYNC name — and his stepfather, Paul Harless, a Baptist church choir director.

In 2012, Timberlake married actress Jessica Biel. They have two sons together. In 2019, Timberlake publicly apologized to Biel after he was seen holding hands with actress Alisha Wainwright. He wrote on Instagram that “for my family I feel it is important to address recent rumors that are hurting the people I love.”

In 2004, Timberlake performed with Janet Jackson during the Super Bowl. Part of their choreography included a moment where Timberlake grabbed her chest. The move was supposed to reveal additional fabric but instead exposed her right breast in one of television’s most infamous wardrobe malfunctions . Jackson was barred a week later from the Grammy telecast, causing an outcry.

In 2021, Timberlake featured in the documentary “Framing Britney Spears,” a result of the “Free Britney” movement . Timberlake and Spears dated around the turn of the millennium. When they ended things, Timberlake portrayed himself as the victim. Spears became the subject of vitriolic press, suffering the consequences of his publicity. Spears’ 2023 memoir, “The Woman in Me,” devotes several chapters to their relationship, including deeply personal details.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been accused of a "direct contradiction" of their previous obsession with their privacy, a royal commentator has said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex may find themselves unable to visit Australia during their global tour, it is claimed, despite the resounding "success" of their recent trip to Nigeria.

Royal correspondent Louise Roberts suggests that the couple, who stepped down as senior royals in 2020, are ready for a " world tour'" following their successful Nigerian sojourn, but she has criticised them for their previous demands for "privacy"

Speaking to Sky News Australia, she said: "In May, after Nigeria, and that was a successful faux royal tour for them, let's face it, Harry made the comment they want to do more of this." On the channel's Royal Report, Louise added: "(Harry and Meghan) are obsessed with privacy but a world tour is a direct contradiction."

The reporter also revealed that the Sussexes are 'unable to travel to Australia' in the near future due to a potential clash with King Charles and Queen Camilla's forthcoming tour of the country in October. She stated: "They can't go where Charles and Camilla will go - they can't go to Australia."

Meanwhile, Meghan and Harry have offered fans a sneak peek into what transpired behind-the-scenes during their Nigeria visit. In a touching moment, Meghan was visibly moved when she received a particularly special gift for Archie and Lilibet.

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan, was visibly moved during her high-profile visit to the African continent when young Grace Busari presented her with a pair of stunning hand-stitched teddy bears. Grace, daughter of CNN Nigeria Bureau Chief is just 13 and caught Meghan by surprise with her heartfelt gift.

Made from traditional African print material, Grace's bears, which are part of her range @graceteddies, reduced Meghan nearly to tears as she enveloped Grace's mum Stephanie in an emotional and appreciative hug. Meghan's reaction was even more touching given her previous comment about missing not being with her loved ones for Mother's Day. Grace's mother Stephanie, who attended the same Women in Business conference as Meghan, recounted their interaction on this historic visit.

Stephanie spoke highly of the Royal couple saying: "Wow! That was the weekend that was! Flying to Abuja to cover the Duke and Duchess of Sussex visit, I truly didn't know what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised. They are fun, caring, loved up, compassionate, total naturals with a crowd. To see Harry sitting on the floor to play volleyball with disabled servicemen was something and he showed such compassion too during his hospital visit to Kaduna."

"It was a private visit but looked like a royal tour in all but name! So happy that Harry and Meghan visited Nigeria to shine a spotlight on the injured servicemen and women, Invictus Games and mental health - and to dispel a few myths about Nigeria being a dangerous place! Also wonderful to see Meghan celebrated and welcomed as per Naija girl! Welcome Omowale Ada Mazi Adetokunbo Amira. (Just a few of the names she has received while here!)"
