10 Best Places to Visit in East Yorkshire (England)

For just a small county on the North Sea, East Yorkshire changes dramatically as you travel through.

In the south is reclaimed moorland, criss-crossed by historic canals that helped to get coal to the docks at Goole and Hull for export.

Here on the Humber estuary there’s all the activity that comes with prospering industry.

But as soon as you go inland you arrive at a softer landscape of smooth green hills and sweet villages, which is known as the Wolds.

Idle around historic market towns or make for the coast where there’s seaside fun for kids and powerful cliffs in the north around Flamborough.

Lets explore the best places to visit in East Yorkshire :

Hull Marina

Hull has been a port since at least the 1100s, and in the last 10 years or so has become one of England’s trendiest towns.

It’s still a major port, but since the decline of England’s fishing industry Hull has evolved into a centre for the arts as well.

There are some really happening areas to investigate, particularly around the old merchants’ warehouses in the Trinity Quarter.

This whole neighbourhood has been thoroughly transformed and now has cafes, stylish boutiques and lots of other great stuff to reward an inquisitive visitor.

There’s also an enormous amount of museum and attractions in Hull.

We’ll name the Maritime Museum, Streetlife Museum of Transport, the Deep (a  first-rate aquarium) and the Ferens Art Gallery, which hosted the Turner Prize in 2016. But that’s just for starters!

2. Beverley

Beverley

Historic and just wonderful to behold, East Yorkshire’s county town is the kind of place first-time visitors fall in love with.

The pinnacle is of course the 13th-century Beverley Minster, an outstanding example of medieval workmanship on a  large scale, bigger even than many cathedrals.

There’s a strong feeling of community here too, with people coming together to organise the annual folk festival in June, as well as beer and food festivals, the famous annual fair, Christmas market and a whole lot more.

And try to be in town on Wednesdays or Saturdays for regular the market which remains a staple of local life.

While there you could take a peek at the North Bar, a brick-built gate from the 1400s and the only surviving fragment of the town walls.

3. Bridlington

Bridlington

As the top resort in East Yorkshire, Bridlington has all the hallmarks of an English seaside escape.

Think donkey rides, sandy beaches, a windswept promenade and charming little attractions like the Bondville Model Village.

As is often the way, it’s the little ones who will get the most out of a destination like Bridlington, going for a trip on the “land train”, building sandcastles on the beach and having the time of their lives at the amusements and fairground rides.

Older visitors will have their own fun exploring the older part of Bridlington, which took shape centuries before the seaside resort and is some way inland.

4. Pocklington

Pocklington

A respectable little market town, Pocklington has got plenty of personality and is in a useful location just a few minutes from the City of York.

The town has cafes and tea rooms that spill out on to the pavement, and is a great place to potter around for a while.

All Saints Church is the dominant landmark in the town, with a large tower from the 1400s and a nave mostly constructed 300 years before that.

The best bet for a day out is Burnby Hall Gardens, where there’s a rockery, Victorian garden, shrubbery, walled garden and lakes with more than 100 varieties of water lily.

5. Flamborough

Flamborough Lighthouse

Loaded with man-made and natural splendour, Flamborough is next to an awesome headland in the north of the county.

The obvious landmark at Flamborough Head is the lighthouse, which has been guiding maritime traffic for more than 200 years and can be entered during the summer.

The chalk cliffs on the promontory are majestic and you’ll see little hints of human intervention: There’s an earlier lighthouse, from the 1600s, and dividing the headland from the mainland is the 3.2 kilometre Bronze Age dyke, which would have defended against attacks from the sea.

The two beaches, North and South Landing are where invaders would have arrived, and both have a savage majesty about them.

Hornsea

On warm summer days Hornsea comes to life and brings in day-trippers from all over Yorkshire.

There are caravan parks if you want to stay longer and take advantage  of the Blue Flag sandy beach, amusements and promenade, all complemented by fish and chip shops, tea rooms and the Floral Hall for old-time entertainment.

Kids can befriend lambs and goats at the working Honeysuckle Farm, while the Hornsea Museum has lovely memorabilia from days gone by, like school desks, old shops signs and the once famous Hornsea pottery.

Hornsea Mere is a beautiful inland lake overlooked by Wassand Hall, a fine regency mansion.

Goole

Long described as the “Port in Green Fields”, Goole is a functioning port a long way inland, at the south of the county.

It started out shipping coal excavated in South Yorkshire, but decades after this industry died off it continues to grow as a busy container port.

So there’s a scruffy dignity to Goole, and lots of relics of Victorian industry.

One is a Tom Pudding Hoist, a titanic piece of machinery which would lift the old coal barges and tip their contents onto ships at the dock.

It makes sense that the Yorkshire Waterways Museum should be in Goole, a riveting account of the canals and navigations in the region.

8. Driffield

Driffield

This is the largest town in East Yorkshire’s Wolds, a chalk ridge that runs north to south in the county and is treasured for its grasslands, rolling scenery, ponds and villages.

If your idea of a relaxation is discovering country estates and historic houses, Driffield will be up your street.

There’s Sledmere House and its precisely trimmed parterres, and the distinguished Burton Agnes Hall, commissioned during the reign of Elizabeth I in the early-1600s and with a garden that has more than 3,000 plant species.

And to fully appreciate the lovely rural landscapes, have a ramble along the Driffield Navigation or board the Yorkshire Wolds Railway, with steam trains puffing through these hills from April to October.

9. Withernsea

Withernsea

A modest seaside resort, Withernsea is the go-to destination for fish and chips and seafront strolls to blow the cobwebs away.

The town is dwarfed by the Withernsea Lighthouse, which was built in the 1890s and decommissioned 40 years ago.

Now it acts as a museum for the town, with little exhibits about the resort in Edwardian times and the Hollywood Golden Age actor Kay Kendall who was born in Withernsea.

You can scale the 144 steps for fabulous coastal vistas and pop into the tea rooms for some warming refreshment.

A few minutes down the coast is a Cold War relic at RAF Holmpton, where there’s a vast control bunker 30 metres underground that has recently been opened to the public.

10. Bempton

Bempton Cliffs

A sleepy seaside village, the main event in Bempton is the Bempton Cliffs, which soar to more then 100 metres in places.

Their hard chalk composition means they don’t erode easily and their many deep ridges afford an exceptional breeding ground for sea birds like puffins, guillemots, gannets, fulmars and kittiwakes.

So this arresting stretch of coastline is a nature reserve managed by the Royal Society of the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and a goldmine for birdwatchers or anyone with an affinity for nature.

Back in the village the Bempton’s pond, the Mere, is an adorable place to have a picnic on grassy heath in the company of ducks and geese.

If you don’t find fossils, you can search for crabs and other marine life in the rock pools, but check the tide tables before you go, and don’t get too close to the cliff edge in case of falling rocks!

Access to the beach is by walking from the car park down a steep (no vehicular access) road.

Fraisthorpe Beach

Many years ago,  Fraisthorpe  was a nudist beach. Given the average temperature on this bracing coast, it’s no surprise that today’s visitors are far more covered up!

Fraisthorpe is popular with dog walkers as it’s one of the few where dogs are permitted year-round.

Market day in Malton.

The town of Malton in North Yorkshire is seen as Yorkshire’s Food Capital , thanks to its lovely range of independent restaurants, pubs, and bars.

Artisan grocers, producers, and independent shops thrive here, all thanks to its regular Food Festival’s great reputation and perfect positioning by the North York Moors.

The pretty town is a lovely place for an autumnal potter, and we’d recommend visiting with an empty tum! Oh, and don’t miss the huge Yorkshire pudding recipe mural while you’re there.

7. Settle, North Yorkshire

Settle, one of the best Yorkshire towns.

The gateway to the three peaks, Settle is a beautiful Yorkshire town to visit in the Craven district of the Yorkshire Dales. Surrounded by glorious countryside, the characterful town has plenty on offer, including an array of fantastic gastropubs and quaint, independent shops to potter around.

Explore the history of the Settle-Carlisle railway, before enjoying some great food from one of its independent eateries, and a pint in a nice traditional pub.

8. Ilkley, West Yorkshire

Views over Ilkley from Cow and Calf.

On Ilkla Moor Baht’at! Ilkley is a spectacular West Yorkshire town overlooked by the stunning Ilkley Moors – which you may know as the home to the famous Cow and Calf.

The upmarket town is like a mini Harrogate, with plenty of quaint cafes, fantastic restaurants and cosy pubs to frequent – alongside a number of great shops that you won’t find anywhere else.

We’d recommend Ilkley as a great foodie escape.

9. Pickering, North Yorkshire

Pickering, North Yorkshire.

Found on the edge of the beautiful North York Moors , Pickering, must like its fellow towns also featured on this list, is full of independent shops and cafes – alongside fantastic antique shops and restaurants.

Additionally, it’s also home to a lovely weekly market, where visitors can peruse local produce, gifts and more in an idyllic setting boasting not only the surrounding countryside, but a picturesque castle, too.

14. Hebden Bridge

The view of the canal in Hebden Bridge.

‘Lesbian capital’ of the UK, ‘greatest town in Europe’, ‘fourth funkiest town in the world’ – Hebden Bridge has been named it all. And for us, it’s the perfect place to visit.

Located west of Halifax, at the confluence of the River Calder and the Hebden Water, the market town combines an industrial past with beautiful natural surroundings, and somehow manages to boast a real cool factor in everything that it does.

There’s a real artsy vibe throughout, which is reflected in its strong array of bars, cafes, restaurants and shops – which will have you pottering for the better part of an afternoon.

Among Hebden Bridge’s star attractions are the nearby Hardcastle Crags and the many Happy Valley filming locations .

A street in Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

Another of the Herriot towns, Thirsk is a charming Yorkshire market town that offers a wonderful base for exploring the North Yorkshire countryside.

It’s the home of and the literary inspiration of James Herriot’s novel series (including All Creatures Great & Small ) which was inspired by his veterinary work in the area, which is honoured by a museum in the town where guests can wander around the original Skeldale House.

The town is also home to plenty of shops to potter around, alongside, of course, pubs and restaurants where you can fill up after a wander around.

East Riding of Yorkshire history

When the last glacial period ended, the hunter gatherers of the Palaeolithic period followed the animal herds across the land between continental Europe and Britain. Then, as conditions continued to improve and vegetation became more able to support a greater diversity of animals, the annual range of seasonal movement by Mesolithic communities decreased, and people became more fixed to particular localities. Until about 6,000 BC, Mesolithic people appear to have exploited their environment as they found it. As communities came to rely on a smaller territorial range and as population levels increased, attempts began to be made to modify or control the natural world. In the Great Wold Valley, pollen samples of Mesolithic date indicate that the forest cover in the area was being disturbed and altered by man, and that open grasslands were being created. The Yorkshire Wolds became a major focus for human settlement during the Neolithic period as they had a wide range of natural resources. The oldest monuments found on the Wolds are the Neolithic long barrows and round barrows. Two earthen long barrows in the region are found at Fordon, on Willerby Wold, and at Kilham, near Driffield, both of which have radiocarbon dates of around 3700 BC. From around 2000 to 800 BC, the people of the Bronze Age built the 1,400 Bronze Age round barrows that are known to exist on the Yorkshire Wolds. These are found both in isolation and grouped together to form cemeteries. Many of these sites can still be seen as prominent features in the present-day landscape. By the later Bronze Age, an open, cleared, landscape predominated on the Wolds. It was used for grazing and also for arable cultivation. The wetlands on either side of the Wolds in the River Hull valley, Holderness and the Vale of York were also being used for animal rearing at this time. In the Iron Age there were further cultural changes in the area. There emerged a distinctive local tradition known as the Arras Culture, named after a site at Arras, near Market Weighton. There are similarities between the chariot burials of the Arras Culture and groups of La Tene burials in northern Europe, where the burial of carts was also practised. The area became the kingdom of the tribe known as the Parisi. After invading Britain in AD 43, the Romans crossed the Humber Estuary in AD 71 to invade the Northumbrian territory of the Parisi tribe. From their bridgehead at Petuaria they travelled northwards and built roads along the Wolds to Derventio, present day Malton, and then westwards to the River Ouse where they built the fort of Eboracum. There is evidence of extensive use of the light soils of the Wolds for grain farming in the Roman era. Several Roman villas which were the centres of large agricultural estates have been identified around Langton and Rudston. In the low-lying lands on either side of the Wolds there was an increase in the number of settlements between 500 BC and AD 500, as the land became drier and more accessible due to a fall in sea level. The lower-lying land was used for stock breeding. During the last years of Roman occupation Anglo-Saxon raiders were troubling the area and, by the second half of the 5th century, settlement by Anglian invaders was taking place in east Yorkshire. Village names containing the elements -ing, -ingham or -ham are Anglian settlement names. As Christianity became established in the area from the 7th century onwards, several cemeteries like the one at Garton on the Wolds show evidence of the abandonment of pagan burial practices. In AD 867, the Great Danish Army captured the Anglian town of York, and the remnants of the army settled in Yorkshire from AD 876, when their leader Halfdan shared out the land among them. Scandinavian settlements have names including the elements -by and -thorpe. Scandinavian rule in the area came to an end in AD 954 with the death of their ruler Eric Bloodaxe. After the Norman Conquest of England by William the Conqueror in AD 1066, the land in the East Riding was granted to followers of the new Norman king and ecclesiastical institutions. When some of the northern earls rebelled, William retaliated with the Harrying of the North which laid waste to many East Riding villages. The land was then distributed among powerful barons, such as the Count of Aumale in Holderness and the Percy family in the Wolds and the Vale of York. These lay lords and ecclesiastical institutions, including the monasteries, continued to improve and drain their holdings throughout the Middle Ages to maximise the rents they could charge for them. In the mid-16th century Henry VIII of England dissolved the monasteries, resulting in the large areas of land owned by Meaux Abbey, Bridlington Priory and other monastic holdings being confiscated. The Crown subsequently sold these large tracts of land into private ownership. Along with the land already belonging to lay owners, they formed some of the vast estate holdings which continued to exist in the Riding until the 20th century. The 18th and 19th centuries saw first the expansion of canals and then the construction of rail links. The River Derwent was canalised as far upstream as Malton and was linked to Pocklington by the cutting of the Pocklington Canal. Other canals were cut to join the towns of Beverley and Driffield to the River Hull, which was also improved to aid navigation. The Market Weighton Canal connected the town directly to the Humber Estuary. An early rail link was constructed between Filey and Bridlington in 1847 and the Malton to Driffield railway was the first to cross the Wolds in 1853. These routes primarily served the agricultural community in helping to get their products to the expanding industrial markets in the West Riding of Yorkshire and to the port of Hull for export. The rail links served also to transport holidaymakers to the expanding coastal resorts of Bridlington, Hornsea and Withernsea. The canals and canalisation of some of the rivers helped to aid drainage in such of the low-lying ill-drained areas that then still existed. The landscape in the East Riding had changed little since the enclosure of the open fields in the 18th and 19th centuries, except for the removal of some hedgerows to allow for the use of large agricultural machinery in the 20th century.

The City of Kingston upon Hull is a separate unitary . Other councils areas adjacent to the authority include Hull, Doncaster, Selby, York, Ryedale and Scarborough .

East Riding of Yorkshire Geology photo

Geologically the East Riding district is split into three parts . The western part is the eastern section of the Vale of York with the southern extension into the Humberhead Levels . The south-east of the district is the coastal plain of Holderness, which faces east to the North Sea . The middle part is a chalk formation which extends from North Ferriby to the coast at Flamborough Head .

East Riding of Yorkshire Landscape photo

The Wolds area takes the form of an elevated, gently rolling plateau, cut by numerous deep, steep-sided, flat-bottomed valleys of glacial origin . At Flamborough Head the Wolds rise up to form high chalk cliffs, where there are water-worn caves and stacks along the shore . The Holderness coastline suffers the highest rate of coastal erosion in Europe .

The East Riding generally has cool summers and relatively mild winters . For its latitude this area is mild in winter and cooler in summer due to the influence of the Gulf Stream in the northern Atlantic Ocean . Air temperature varies on a daily and seasonal basis .

Discover Beverley

Beverley is a stunning market town standing as tall as its majestic minster. With recent accolades declaring it one of the top places to live in the UK (as voted by The Sunday Times), this is a gem waiting to be explored. From fun days with the family to culture-filled weekends, Beverley offers plenty for everyone.

With its towering gothic minster, pretty market squares and beautiful Georgian townhouses, it’s a town steeped in history, yet one with an attractive present. From home-cooked market-fare to cafe culture and Michelin starred restaurants, your palate will be pleased with a visit to East Yorkshire’s larder.

Wander Beverley Westwood

While the original gate to Beverley - the old North Bar - still exists, the real gateway to the market town is the vast grassy expanse of the Westwood pasture . From town, meander through the quaint shopping streets out towards the sprawling grass and woodland where there’s always space to play. Home to a racecourse, golf course and its resident grazing cows, it’s the perfect place for a dog walk, picnic or to fly a kite.

A day at Beverley Races

Sip champagne, place your bets and enjoy the thrill as thundering hooves race across the pasture. The town’s popular thoroughbred horse racing venue first opened its doors in 1690. Today the racecourse hosts flat racing from April until September, attracting thousands of racegoers and visitors from across the country. Dress to impress at one of the county’s top Ladies’ Days, experience a musical race night or celebrate your wedding.

Town trails

Wander Beverley's town trails

Cultural Beverley

Prefer a creative cultural scene? The town’s medieval trail reinforces its many creative talents, including bakers, musicians and even puppet makers. As you explore, look up to spot the paintings of artist Fred Elwell. Don't miss Beverley Minster , arguably one of Europe’s best gothic buildings before heading across to the opposite end of town where you’ll find St Mary’s Church . If you look closely, you’ll see the white rabbit that inspired the character in Alice in Wonderland. And be sure to take a look at the packed cultural calendar for outdoor food festivals and performances at East Riding Theatre .

Shopping in Beverley

Easily explored on foot, the town has the perfect mix of independently owned boutiques and high street stores, while its popular market takes place every Saturday.

Flemingate Beverley brings fashion, food and film close to East Yorkshire’s historic heart offering an independent cinema and mix of high street names, independent shops and boutiques alongside local creative talent. A great place for cafe culture and entertainment for the whole family. Explore the outdoor play park, get sweaty at Jump Inc or cool off with ice cream.

With so many stories to explore it’s time to make plans, meet friends and enjoy the delights of Beverley.
