Check-in . Check-in is available online or through the airline's mobile app starting 24 hours before departure. Passengers can also check in at the airport through self-service kiosks or with airport agents.

Boarding . Air Canada boards passengers according to five zones, plus pre-boarding for those needing assistance. Boarding for families and those traveling with musical instruments happens between zones two and three. Your boarding zone is based on elite status, fare class and if you hold a co-branded credit card.

In-flight experience . The airline offers three classes of service on most of its flights — economy , premium economy and business class . Your in-flight experience, including meals and beverages, will depend on your class of service. However, all passengers can access movies, TV and music options in over 15 languages. Wi-Fi is available on limited flights for a fee.

Air Canada fees

Passengers can expect to pay various fees depending on which Air Canada services they choose. Fees can also be influenced by ticket type and elite status. Here is a sample of the fees you may be charged when flying Air Canada.

Checked baggage fees . Starting at $30 for the first bag and $50 for the second bag (this is waived for Air Canada's credit cardholders ).

Additional or oversized bag . Starting at $100.

Seat selection fees . Starting at $14 for basic and standard fares within Canada or the U.S.

Change fees . Varies based on ticket class and time before departure. Passengers can change their flights up to two hours before departure, and fees typically range from $26 to $115.

Cancellation fees . Not all tickets are refundable, and some provide a credit instead of a refund. For international travel outside Canada and the U.S., cancellation fees can be as high as $590.

Wi-Fi . In-flight internet access is available on limited flights between Los Angeles and Toronto or Los Angeles and Montreal; it costs roughly $6-$8, depending on whether you're connecting to a single mobile device or want full internet access.

Another way to determine if Air Canada is a good airline is to review its independent safety ratings. AirlineRatings.com evaluates and compares airline safety records. It’s given Air Canada its top rating, seven out of seven stars, based on incident data from the International Civil Aviation Organization and International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Reliability

Air Canada was ranked 10th by IATA for on-time performance among the 10 largest North American airlines based on 2022 performance. The airline completed on-time arrivals only 51% of the time in July 2023, which is much lower than the average on-time performance of 66%.

Customer satisfaction

In addition to official ratings, customer satisfaction scores can also indicate if Air Canada is a good airline. For example, TripAdvisor has almost 30,000 reviews from travelers sharing their thoughts on whether Air Canada is good. Although it has an average score of 3.0 out of 5.0 stars, the airline was a Travelers' Choice Winner in 2018 and 2019.

Additional customer feedback is available from Flight-Report.com. On that site, Air Canada has an average score of 7.5 out of 10 stars. However, its rating has been trending downward over the last 12 months.

Air Canada typically has competitive fares on the routes it operates. Air Canada Boeing Jet Makes Emergency Landing After Engine Catches Fire| VIDEO

A n Air Canada Boeing jet, flying from Toronto to Paris, was forced to make an emergency landing late Wednesday night following an engine fire shortly after takeoff. There were 389 passengers on Flight AC872, at the time of the incident.

Not long after Flight AC872 took off from Toronto Pearson International Airport, the event occurred, as reported by The New York Post. The plane encountered what Air Canada subsequently referred to as a “engine issue” as it took off for Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Flames shot out of the plane's tail end due to an unidentified issue. The terrifying moments were caught on camera by witnesses, who show flames flaring and occasionally extending the length of the airplane as it rose.

One witness, who recorded the takeoff, reacted to the sight of the flames by exclaiming, “Holy crap! We’ve got an engine fire — holy s–t!” Since then, the video has gone viral, demonstrating the seriousness of the situation as seen by all on board.

The flight crew quickly took action to handle the incident after realizing there was an engine fire, the Post said. The pilots made the decision to make an emergency landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport. As part of routine emergency response protocols, fire personnel greeted the jet as it returned safely to the airport.

“After the aircraft landed, it was inspected by airport response vehicles as per normal operating processes, and it taxied to the gate on its own,” Air Canada said in a release, reported by New York Post. Neither the passengers nor the flight crew were reported injured.

After the event, travelers were quickly rescheduled for a another flight that was leaving later that evening. Despite the issue, Air Canada made sure that all 389 passengers were taken care of and that their travel arrangements were not too disturbed, the Post reported.

The Boeing aircraft that was involved in the incident was then removed from operation so that Air Canada's engineers and maintenance workers could conduct a full assessment. Before the aircraft is put back into service, the airline made it clear that a thorough assessment will be carried out to ascertain what caused the engine fire and to guarantee the aircraft's safety and airworthiness.

Air Canada’s official statement, as mentioned by The Post, highlighted the adherence to safety protocols and the swift action taken by the flight crew and emergency response teams. “Safety is our top priority, and our crews are trained to handle such situations. We commend the pilots and crew for their professionalism and composure during the incident,” the statement read.

The airline reminded the public and its clients that these kinds of occurrences are uncommon and that all of its planes undergo rigorous maintenance and safety inspections on a regular basis. Investigations are still ongoing to determine the precise cause of the engine fire; further information will be made public after the inspection is finished.

You can earn extra miles by linking your Aeroplan account with the Aeroplan eStore , your Starbucks account, or various hotel and car rental partners that allow you to double-dip your mileage earnings.

As an example, you can book a car rental with your Chase Sapphire Reserve card and earn both Chase Ultimate Rewards points plus Aeroplan points from the account that you linked.

First, let’s take a look at how Aeroplan prices award tickets. Aeroplan has pricing models that differ based on what airline you’re flying.

For its own flights, Aeroplan uses a variable pricing method , meaning that there can be a huge day-to-day difference in the points you need for a redemption.

For partner-operated flights, Aeroplan publishes a region-based award chart that tells you exactly how many points you need for an award redemption.

In addition to the airlines and regions involved, award pricing depends on the total distance you fly. The farther you fly, the more expensive your award redemption is. Tools like Great Circle Mapper are a great way to calculate the distance between your origin and destination airports.

Aeroplan breaks up the world into four regions: North America, the Atlantic, the Pacific, and South America. Here’s a map of the travel zones:

Aeroplan charges 5,000 points for stopovers, including on one-way redemptions. This allows for a lot of different kinds of award redemptions. You still need to factor in the distance flown, but, for just 5,000 more points, you have plenty of options.

For partner awards, Aeroplan uses a zone-based award chart. Pricing is also determined by the distance flown.

The Star Alliance has an extensive network in Europe, as well as strategically placed partners in Asia, Africa , and South America . These allow you to travel all over the world seamlessly.

Air Canada has several non-Alliance partners, too. These include airlines, such as Etihad and Emirates, that can connect you to almost every corner of the globe.

It’s worth mentioning that you may need more points for some of these redemptions than you would with other award programs. However, Aeroplan points are generally easy to earn. There’s still great value to be found with your Aeroplan points .

1. Fly Between the East Coast and India for 90,000 Points One-Way in Business Class on a Star Alliance Partner

A one-way business class flight between the U.S. East Coast and India using Aeroplan may not be at the top of your list of redemptions, but it really should be.

The Star Alliance has several Asian carriers that allow you to access many cities across the region with nonstop flights or easy 1-stop itineraries. Partners based in Asia include All Nippon Airways (ANA), Asiana Airlines, EVA Air, Shenzhen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and Thai Airways .

Depending on the distance, you can book a one-way business class flight from the U.S. to destinations in Asia from just 75,000 Aeroplan points .

That pricing is for the shortest routes, but one exception is for flights between Seattle and Tokyo, which fall in the band of 5,000 miles or fewer and price out at 55,000 points one-way in business class.

Keep in mind that most of Asia falls into the Pacific zone in Aeroplan’s award chart, and it’s a vast region, so mileage rates vary depending on your origin and destination cities.

8. Fly Between the U.S. and the Middle East for 90,000 Points One-Way in Business Class on Etihad Airways

As we mentioned above, Air Canada has partnerships with airlines outside of Star Alliance. One of those partnerships is with Etihad Airways.

Thanks to this, you can redeem 90,000 Aeroplan points to fly one-way in Etihad business class from cities on the U.S. East Coast, such as New York (JFK) or Washington, D.C. (IAD), to Abu Dhabi (AUH).

Entering Canada

On this page, by private boat, required identification, permanent residents, travelling with children, you and the border services officer.

Whether you’re returning home or visiting, you’ll follow the same 3 steps to enter Canada:

Step 1. Pre-arrival: Use Advance Declaration or complete a Declaration Card

If you’re arriving by air at one of Canada’s participating international airports, you can save time at the border. Submit your customs and immigration declaration online using Advance Declaration up to 72 hours before you arrive in Canada.

If you choose not to submit your declaration in advance, you can complete it at an airport kiosk or eGate. If you’re landing at an airport without kiosks or eGates, you’ll receive a Declaration Card on board the aircraft or other conveyance. Read the instructions and complete the card before you arrive. Have it ready to present to Canadian officials at the airport, along with your identification and other travel documents. If you're travelling with children, please have their documentation ready as well.

If using a Declaration Card, detach and discard the instructions. To help us serve you faster, do not fold the card.

Everyone arriving in Canada must complete a declaration. You can list up to 4 people living at the same residence on one card, or 8 people per Advance Declaration submission.

The Declaration Card or Advance Declaration submission tells us what we need to know about you, your travels and what you’re bringing into the country.

Connecting to another flight

If you’re connecting to another flight or travelling on to another destination and re-boarding the same plane, follow the signs. At some airports, you may have to check your baggage and have it screened again.

Step 2. Arrival: First CBSA checkpoint

When you arrive at the terminal, follow the signs to the first Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) checkpoint, also called “primary inspection.”

If you used Advance Declaration, go to a kiosk or eGate to retrieve your confirmed declaration receipt. Up to 5 people may use a kiosk as a group upon arrival.

Next, a border services officer will examine your:

• Declaration Card or Advance Declaration kiosk receipt
• your identification
• other travel documents

The officer may ask you a series of questions to determine:

• your immigration status
• the type of any goods you're bringing with you
• your duty-free allowance
• your personal exemption entitlements

Goods not properly declared that are restricted or prohibited in Canada can, under the law, be seized.

Newcomer or coming to Canada to study or work

If you’re a newcomer to Canada, coming to study or work in Canada, you may need to present further documentation. The officer will help guide you through this process. You may ask the officer for help if you don’t speak English or French well.

Step 3. Baggage and second CBSA checkpoint

Go to the baggage claim area. If you must pay duty and taxes, you can pay at most major airports while waiting for your luggage.

Once you’ve picked up your luggage:

• go to the next CBSA checkpoint
• Declaration Card, Advance Declaration kiosk or eGate receipt
• receipt, if you paid duty and taxes for your goods

The officer may direct you to a secondary inspection area.

Here, officers may ask you:

• for detailed information about your travels
• to present your luggage and goods for examination

This is a normal part of the travelling process. Your cooperation is appreciated and helps us ensure the safety of Canada, its economy and its residents.

If you’re arriving by land, follow the signs to the first checkpoint, also called “primary inspection.” Here, a border services officer will examine your identification and other travel documents and take your verbal declaration.

Visit U.S. to Canada border wait times for estimated wait times at certain locations.

If you’re arriving by private boat, go directly to a designated marine telephone reporting site and call the CBSA Telephone Reporting Centre (TRC) at 1-888-226-7277 to obtain clearance.

Private boaters that meet certain conditions may report to the CBSA by calling the TRC using cell phone from their location in Canadian waters.

Make sure you carry proper identification for yourself and any children travelling with you to help confirm your legal right to enter Canada. Canada has introduced a new entry requirement, known as an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), for certain international travellers who fly to Canada.

The Government of Canada recommends that Canadian citizens travel with a valid Canadian passport because it’s the only reliable and universally accepted travel and identification document available to Canadians for the purpose of international travel.

International transportation companies such as airlines may require travellers to present a passport before boarding. Canadian citizens may face delays or may not be allowed to board the plane or other conveyance if they present other documents such as a:

• Enhanced Driver's License (EDL)/Enhanced Identification Card (EIC)
• NEXUS card (used where the program is available)
• Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card used in FAST lanes
• Canadian citizenship card
• Certificate of Indian Status
• Birth certificate in combination with either a driver's licence or a government-issued photo identification

Permanent residents (immigrants living in Canada who are not yet Canadian citizens) need a valid permanent resident card to return to Canada. Check the expiry date on your card.

Note that a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship is not a travel document.

Parents who share custody of their children should bring copies of the legal custody documents to the border when travelling with their children.

A consent letter should be used for all cross-border travel when a child is travelling:

• with only 1 parent or guardian
• in the care of friends or relatives
• with a group, such as a sports, school, musical or religious group

Example of a consent letter to permit travel by a child with a single custodian or parent.

When travelling with a group of vehicles, parents or guardians should arrive at the border in the same vehicle as the children.

Adults who aren’t parents or guardians should have written permission from the parents or guardians to supervise the children. The consent letter should include addresses and telephone numbers where the parents or guardian can be reached.

Border officers watch for missing children, and may ask detailed questions about the children who are travelling with you.

You may occasionally find yourself going through a more detailed inspection. In some cases, this simply means that you may have to complete a form. In other cases, the border services officer will need to identify the goods you’re bringing into the country or examine your luggage.

Border services officers are legally entitled to examine your luggage as part of their responsibility to protect Canada's safety, economy and environment. You are responsible for opening, unpacking and repacking your luggage.

By making your goods easily accessible for inspection and having your receipts handy, you will be helping the CBSA to help you. It’s a good idea to keep all your receipts for accommodation and purchases, and for any repairs done to, or parts bought for, your vehicle. The border services officer may ask to see them as evidence of the length of your stay and of the value of the goods or repairs.

If you disagree with the amount of duty and taxes that you have to pay, please ask to speak with the CBSA superintendent on duty. A consultation can often resolve the issue quickly and without cost. If you’re still not satisfied, our officers can tell you how to make a formal appeal.

Border services officers may arrest an individual for an offence under the Criminal Code (for example, impaired driving, outstanding arrest warrants, stolen property, abductions/kidnappings) and for infractions under other acts of Parliament (for example, the Customs Act , the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act ).

If you’re arrested, you may be compelled to attend court in Canada. You should note that anyone arrested in Canada is protected by and will be treated in accordance with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms .

How to transfer miles to Capital One partners

Important things to know about a Capital One miles transfer

• 1:1 ratio: 1,000 Capital One miles convert to 1,000 miles or points.
• 2:1.5 ratio: 1,000 Capital One miles convert to 750 miles or points.

Cruising can be one of the most luxurious ways to travel , of course, that’s providing you don’t get sea sick easily.

Like any holiday resort, there’s rules that guests have to abide by, but one man was shocked when he heard the extent to which the rules go.

Marc Sebastian is on Royal Caribbean's nine-month cruise, though he is only onboard for the South America-Antarctica leg.

He has been documenting his journey on his TikTok page, and it turns out that the rules go way past lights out by 10pm and keep the noise down a bit.

Viewers have been baffled by the crazy niches of the cruise, such as an iron being $8 to use.

But the biggest no-go of all, is one that Marc unfortunately learnt the hard way.

Apparently, one thing you should never talk about whilst out at sea on a cruise is the Titanic.

Now, whilst it doesn’t take a scientist to work out why this might be, it’s a strange unwritten rule to have.

In the clip, he said: “Who knew that? I didn't.

"I brought up to an entire room of people having lunch that our ship is only 100 feet longer than the Titanic."

And the sheer mention of the ship apparently had people's jaws dropping.

"When I tell you that, utensils dropped okay. Waiters gasped dead silent." he said.

It wasn’t until his friend leant across the table and dropped the hint.

He mentioned that the ship didn’t come ‘with a f***ing handbook’, and whilst that’s fair enough, we can see why it might make people feel uneasy.

But people in the comments said their fascination would be too strong to not talk about it whilst onboard the ship.

One said: “I'm sorry if I'm going on a boat, I'm talking about Titanic and OceanGate .”

Another said: “Not being able to talk about the Titanic would definitely ruin the experience for me."

A third added: “Is the titanic thing for cruises the same as like macbeth for theatre?”

And if you thought the quirks of the ship couldn’t get any weirder, well, you were wrong.

Further in the video, he revealed that ships tend to have ‘godmothers’ - the particular one he was on being Whoopi Goldberg …which is kind of iconic.

There was even a framed picture of the actress.

According to Cruise Critic, a ship's godmother is said to 'bring good luck and protection to the vessel'.

Preclearance operates at 15 locations worldwide

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance is the strategic stationing of CBP personnel at designated foreign airports to inspect travelers prior to boarding U.S.-bound flights. With Preclearance, travelers then bypass CBP and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) inspections upon U.S. arrival and proceed directly to their connecting flight or destination.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
