The reality is that Rio de Janeiro favelas are an inescapable part of the Rio landscape and are synonymous with the city itself. Rio is home to around 600 different favelas, most of which are not safe to visit. However, there are a couple that do offer tours. So how do you choose the right favela tour?

Following the pacification of the favelas that began in 2008, tourism grew in popularity, and there are many companies that offer tours to visit them. But how do you choose the right one?

Top 5 Favela Tours in Rio

Above all else, if you are interested in visiting a favela, I’d recommend sticking to Vidigal, Rocinha, and Santa Marta; those are the ones that have tours run by locals. Here are a couple of my favorite favela tours in Rio that are ethical, responsible, and run by locals that live in the favela itself.

The History of Rio Favelas

But before you book your favela tour in Rio de Janeiro , it’s best if you know a couple of key things, like the history behind Rio favelas.

Favelas first appeared in the 19th century, built by displaced soldiers from Bahia who named them after a plant native to that region which irritates the skin and grows freely in the Bahian shantytowns. Favelas were later occupied by fugitive and then freed slaves, earning them the early nickname bairros africanos or African neighborhoods.

These communities were historically low-income and nowadays suffer from the stigma of being associated with the drug trade and violence. However, roughly 23% of Rio’s inhabitants, around 1.5 million people, live in favelas.

But they are also known as hives of creativity. Samba was invented in a favela, and so was pagode. Favelas are also home to culture and art, such as the  moon sculpture  in Providência,  the Maze  cultural space in Tavares Bastos, and  the murals  that line the walls of Cantagalo.

Are Favela s safe?

But what about favela safety? Are favela tours safe? The answer to that question depends on the audience. For many people living in these communities, violence is a real and present danger, whether it be from warring drug gangs or the military police.

For tourists, the answer is quite different . When tourists talk about favelas, they mean Santa Marta, Vidigal, and a few others in the south zone of the city. These only make up around 2% of the total of Rio’s favelas.

These communities, such as Santa Marta and Vidigal, are Rio’s so-called safe favelas. Both have undergone drastic processes of urbanization and even gentrification, with poorer residents no longer able to afford to live there.

Santa Marta Favela

Santa Marta, in the neighborhood of Botafogo, became famous when Michael Jackson filmed his music video for  “They Don’t Care About Us”  there in 1996.

Since then, it has been visited by a number of celebrities, including Madonna, Beyoncé, and Alicia Keys, as well as being used as a film set for the fifth installment of the Fast and Furious film franchise.

Vidigal Favela

Vidigal, on the slopes of Morro Dois Irmãos and in between the swanky neighborhoods of Leblon and São Conrado, has also undergone significant urbanization and gentrification since the 2000s, with its superb views of the city and privileged location driving up the price of real estate. There is no longer any significant drug dispute there, and one of the biggest industries in these areas is, in fact, favela tourism.

Rocinha Favela

Rocinha Favela, Latin America’s largest favela , is a vibrant community nestled between the districts of  São Conrado  and  Gávea . Home to around 200,0000 thousand residents, Rocinha’s narrow alleyways and multi-tiered buildings paint a vivid picture of life in Rio’s urban fringe.

Despite its socioeconomic challenges, Rocinha boasts a resilient community spirit and a thriving cultural scene. Its streets are alive with music, food stalls, and local businesses, reflecting the industriousness of its inhabitants. Rocinha is a testament to the stark economic disparities in Rio, yet it’s also a symbol of resilience, community strength, and the vibrant culture of Brazil’s urban spaces.

Why do some people disagree with Favela tours in Rio?

Some people believe that favela tours in Rio, or poor neighborhoods, can harm the communities. They worry about poverty tourism , saying it treats people like exhibits and can take advantage of them. They argue that some tours just let visitors gawk at the residents instead of promoting a true cultural exchange, which can upset the people who live there.

This criticism is especially aimed at companies not based in the favelas, as they might not care about showing the good sides of these communities or explaining the unique challenges and benefits of living there. Local people and tour operators have capitalized on people’s fascination with Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, and in Santa Marta, Rocinha and Vidigal they run a huge number of tours around the community, claiming they offer the reality of the slums and an enriching cultural experience.

Unfortunately, many of these tours can seem like sightseeing trips for people to see how less fortunate folks live. But if you do want to go on one of the favela tours in Rio mentioned above, there are specific things that you should take into consideration when choosing a tour.

1. Choose a Local Operator

A company that is based within the favela itself and only employs local residents offers one of the most sustainable ways of doing a tour. Guides from outside the area are not able to speak authentically for the inhabitants about life within the favelas.

Local guides are also able to delicately advise tourists on etiquette to ensure their visit isn’t too disruptive. This includes preventing photography which might include people who would not appreciate it.

On the other end of the scale, it is wise to avoid the controversial favela jeep tour companies, which ferry visitors through the favelas in safari jeeps. Not only are they almost exclusively based outside the favelas, but they also align the visit with adventure tourism.

Aside from being sensationalist, this has the potential effect of making residents feel like they’re in a zoo. These tours are satirized by the Rio-based comedy group Porta Dos Fundos  in this video  entitled ‘Poor’.

Interaction with the micro-enterprises immerses you into the emotion of the projects as you not only learn the history but get to participate in them during the visit.

Lastly, touring Vidigal with Favela Experience means being guided by people that were actually born, raised and live within the favela.

They are passionate about the place they call home and eager to show you how the favelas in Rio are much more complex and different than what you may see on TV.

Personal Thoughts on Visiting a Favela in Rio

Before I get into sharing with you the wonderful projects that are part of the favela tour we took in Vidigal, I wanted to share some of my personal thoughts and opinions from our experience.

I want to level with you and be real because deciding to take a tour into one of the most notorious areas of Rio de Janeiro, a city I was admittedly intimidated to visit, ended up opening my already open eyes a little wider. If that makes sense. 

David and I are well-traveled, we’ve been to almost 100 countries on all 7 continents. We have mingled with the people of the world on all levels, from shocking poverty to the top 1%.

Yet, I find myself sometimes contemplating stereotypes – never out loud but sometimes in the depths of my mind, it is unfortunately hard-wired into us with the constant media sensationalism that is everywhere. 

Prior to our visit to Brazil , I thought a lot about Rio de Janeiro, favelas, culture, economics and politics. Ultimately, I couldn’t wrap my head around what I would possibly encounter on our favela tour.

I’ve seen poverty, I am no stranger to it. I thought a lot about the ethics of ‘human-based’ tours and wondered how this one would be different. 

We went to Brazil. I fell head over heels for Rio de Janeiro, yes a city I had previously been anxious about and walked away from our tour in the Vidigal Favela with a vow to myself to stop watching the news. (Is that even possible?)

Life in the favelas is hard for the people that live there. They are poor, so damn poor, but they live despite so many ongoing struggles.

I had visions in my mind that the favelas were places that had nothing and were overrun by drug lords. That gunshots rang out on every street corner and violence was part of everyday life. I was wrong. 

Drugs do have a place in the favelas and violence does happen but this is not the only thing in the favelas. They have a community, they have hope and the people that live there have worked together to build their own city within a city.

I was surprised to see that the favelas have built their own economies and they have stores, restaurants and service shops that support that economy.  

Kids play together in the street and adults go about their daily hustle to make a living. Life in the favela is far from perfect but the key here is that it is still life. It is not a void in an otherwise thriving city.

It’s a place that people call home, raise their children in and dream about their futures. 

Our tour with Favela Experience brought the life of a favela to light in a personal way. It was unexpected and an experience that will serve as a reminder to me of why I choose to travel the world and open myself up to other cultures and ways of life. 

Micro-Enterprises that Change Lives

The essence of this favela tour in Vidigal revolves around the social impact projects that have been set up with the support of Planeterra .

The walking tour, that starts at the only entrance and exit to the favela, not only includes time spent on the streets but also visiting a few of the micro-enterprises that have been put in place to change lives and help the favela community thrive.

Guided by someone who lives in Vidigal

From the moment we met Russo, we knew we would like him. He was a very real-world approach to guiding tours in the Vidigal Favela, a place he has called home since he was born.

He has no interest in glossing over what life is like for the people that live there and enthusiastically leads his guests up hills, down back alleys and to each stop on the tour.

After years of watching tours being led through the favela by outside tour companies and people who were not local, he formed his own company called Vidigal Trails.

He now leads tours through his home, telling his own stories about growing up in Vidigal and opening travelers’ eyes to the fact that life in the favela isn’t much different than their own.

Sitiê Eco Park

After entering the favela and taking a community bus to the very end of the road, we made our first tour stop at the Sitiê Eco Park.

Located on the edge of the favela, the eco-park treats you to some pretty impressive views. Although, the views don’t tell the whole story.

Facing an overwhelming issue of too many people in a small space and no waste management services in place, the people originally designated this area on the edge of the favela as a place to dispose of trash.

Years of using the area as a dump came to head in 2006 when a massive landslide came through the area. The effects were devastating, spreading trash through the favela and resulting in loss of life.

That event promoted a couple of concerned community members to start a project of cleaning up the area and retaking the land. They were able to remove more than five tons of trash over the three years that followed.

A large portion of the trash that was recovered during the project was able to be repurposed and used for landscaping within the park. During our visit, we followed paths shaped my pallets and metal slabs, walked upstairs made with recycled tires and admired a variety of items, such as old toilets, being used as planters.

Today the Sitiê Eco Park is used as a community space for leisure, education and environmental awareness. The park also acts as a community garden, where local residents can plant vegetables and herbs.

Vidigal Capoeira

Entering the building we walked up a spiral staircase before arriving into a room that resembled a modern-day dojo. Mats lined the floor and the room was empty with the exception of a large bench on the opposite side of the room.

We would soon learn that this building houses the Vidigal Capoeira school. A place designed to preserve the cultural art of capoeira dance as a significant part of the country’s Afro-Brazilian history and culture.

The school provides an opportunity for children of all ages to learn teamwork and discipline through the sport of Capoeira.

Resembling the practice of martial arts, Capoeira is an elegant fusion of dance, acrobatics, and music that was brought to Brazil by enslaved Africans in the 16 th century.

Taking a hold into the culture of Brazilians, Capoeira is at risk of becoming a lost art among the next generation. This is mainly due to a lack of resources for providing the teachings of the sport to today’s youth.

During our visit, we not only got to witness the beauty of Capoeira at work through the performance of some of the top students at the school but had the chance to try our hands at it as well. I can’t say it was pretty, but we did our best.  

Support from Planeterra has enabled the school to clean up the building and provide a comfortable, safe place for children to learn and study Capoeria.

The skills they learn from the sport have to lead to better performance in school and a heightened opportunity for scholarships to attend higher-level schools in Rio de Janeiro.

One thing is for certain, the energy that project leader Isis exudes is infectious. It took me all of 5 seconds to realize why people are drawn to her and why she has had so much success in her projects.

Stemming from her childhood passion for playing the drums, she has always been a performer and passionate about sharing her love for percussion.

People are drawn to her and her music, leading her to start a percussion school in the heart of Vidigal.

Youth come to her out of interest for the music and stay with her because she makes learning fun. She applies the fundamentals of life to her percussion teaching and is able to help at-risk youth find their purpose in life.

Vidigal Beer

Admittedly, it was hard for us to imagine the concept of a craft brewery operating within a favela. That was until we arrived at Vidigal Beer, our final stop on the favela tour.

Founded by Luciano, Vidigal Beer embraces the very principles that allow micro-enterprises to thrive.

During our visit, he explained to us that his vision is much larger than just brewing beer. He adheres to a low impact structure by abiding by three self-enforced principles within his business.

These include social impact by bringing world awareness to the really like inside the favelas. He strives to show people that life in Vidigal is different from what they see on TV.

Economically he supports small businesses and entrepreneurs inside the favela so they do not have to seek work outside the community.

Lastly, he promotes environmentally sound practices by using all recycled bottles. He never buys used bottles for Vidigal Beer.

He also uses local ingredients that are produced from within the favela, including fruits that come from the eco-park.

Sourcing local ingredients means production is slow but I feel that is a fair trade-off for promoting the sustainability of Vidigal.

Why Social Impact Matters in the Favelas

Rio de Janeiro has 1.5 million people living in it. Almost 25% of those people live in one of the thousand favelas that are scattered throughout the city.

The living conditions of these favelas vary greatly, with some closer resembling a slum while others operate as high-functioning communities similar to what you’d find in lower-class suburbs.

Despite the variance of conditions, none of the residents live in conventional housing.

The people in these communities spend lifetimes of wages constructing concrete homes to live in and unfortunately, formal sanitation systems are not part of the budget.

People that come from the favelas in Rio are often associated with negative assumptions, the drug trade, and crime. This leads to a lack of opportunity and exploitation when they try to find jobs to better their lives.

This assumption has a ripple effect that filters all the way to the youth and in many cases lead them down the exact path they were trying to avoid due to lack of opportunity or other options.  

The recent rise of interest in favela culture by travelers has led to a surge in opportunity for people to thrive within their communities by being part of and helping to develop social enterprises.

By taking a tour with the Favela Experience, that is operated in partnership with the community, you are directly contributing to providing an opportunity to people that have struggled to find it elsewhere.

Important Things to Know Before Taking Any Favela Tour

It is important for me to point out that no matter what favela tour you end up taking in Rio de Janeiro, the same rules should be applied.  

You are entering a community where real people live, work and play. They should be treated with respect and empathy.

If you wouldn’t be comfortable with something in your own community at home, don’t do it while taking a favela tour in Rio.

• A way to connect: Despite your obvious differences, you’ll meet people with similar interests and passions. You’ll meet people that want the same things in life as you. Smile, wave and be friendly during your visit.
• A way to learn: You’ll see that favelas are not all crime and that life inside them goes on like any other city in the world. You’ll learn to see past assumptions and media sensationalism.
• A way to grow: The knowledge you gain on a favela tour will change the way you think about poverty. It will arm you with new knowledge to share with others and a passion to contribute to projects that can make this world a better place.

WHAT A FAVELA TOUR IN RIO IS NOT:

• A gawking tour: Taking a favela tour is not about keeping you separated from the people that live there. It is a tour meant to tear down barriers, give insight to life in other places and for you to make connections with the people you encounter.
• A model session: Being able to take a tour that will get you up close and personal with the residents of a favela is not a free pass to take photos at will. The people you will encounter on your tour are not there for your personal photography needs. Most people prefer that you do not take their photos.

Following these basic principles will enable you to connect with the local people and be accepted during your visit.

En este tour a pie desterraremos los prejuicios más negativos asociados a las favelas, conectando con su parte más desconocida. Comprobaremos el poder de la docencia conociendo de cerca los proyectos educativos de reinserción social . Gracias a estos programas, la población de las favelas puede salir adelante sin necesidad de recurrir a la violencia.

Contrariamente a lo que se pueda pensar, en estas zonas de Río también podemos encontrar manifestaciones artísticas. En nuestro paseo veremos los más famosos grafitis de Rocinha . Algunos murales son auténticas obras de arte donde se plasman los sentimientos de los brasileños más humildes. Sus edificios de colores son otra muestra de la creatividad de los habitantes de Rocinha.

Nuestro recorrido también incluye una parada en el “Trampolín del Diablo” . Este era el nombre que recibió el trazado del Circuito de Gávea a su paso por Rocinha. Sus sinuosas curvas ponían a prueba la pericia de los pilotos en las carreras automovilísticas celebradas aquí entre 1933 y 1954. En esos años, esta competición de monoplazas llegó a ser una de las más importantes de todo Brasil.

Tras la visita a la favela volveremos al punto de partida en Rocinha para trasladarnos de nuevo a la zona hotelera de Río de Janeiro.

Cómo visitar la Favela Rocinha en Río de Janeiro (walking tour)

Te cuento cómo visitar Rocinha, la favela más grande en Río de Janeiro que se ha convertido en un importante punto de interés turístico.

A pesar de que Río de Janeiro es conocido principalmente por sus bonitas playas y la imponente figura del Cristo Redentor, esta ciudad también tiene otra cara que poco a poco ha ido despertando el interés de los turistas.

Y es que muchos visitantes quieren hacer una pausa de las playas y las caipirinhas para conocer las famosas favelas de Río de Janeiro, asentamientos informales que proliferan en los cerros de la ciudad .

En mi caso, me animé a conocer la favela más grande de Río de Janeiro mediante este tour a la Favela Rocinha .

A continuación, te cuento cómo fue esta experiencia y qué otras favelas se puede visitar en la ciudad.

1. ¿Qué es una favela?

Favela es el nombre que se la da en Brasil a las poblaciones de viviendas precarias e informales que se forman en los alrededores o en el interior de las ciudades grandes.

Generalmente, no son lugares seguros para visitar. Sin embargo, en Río de Janeiro se ha abierto la posibilidad de hacer recorridos turísticos por estos asentamientos, los cuales atraen numerosos visitantes, tanto nacionales como internacionales.

2. ¿Qué favelas se pueden visitar en Río de Janeiro?

En general, las favelas más seguras para visitar, que han sido pacificadas, están en la zona sur de la ciudad y las tres principales que reciben turistas son:

Santa Marta

Aunque, también hay otras que se pueden visitar como Chapéu Mangueira , Morro da Babilonia y Cantagalo .

Algunos turistas visitan las favelas por libre, pero esto es algo que NO recomiendo, ya que, por seguridad, es mucho mejor hacerlo con un guía local.

3. Rocinha, la favela más grande de Río de Janeiro

En mi caso, decidí visitar Rocinha, ya que es la favela más grande de Río de Janeiro , una de las que recibe más turistas y en la que se hacen recorridos guiados a diario.

A pesar de que Rocinha es una favela que ha sido pacificada, sólo se recomienda visitarla con un guía local (y, después de haber estado allí, puedo decir que este es un lugar al que no iría por mi cuenta).

En mi caso, lo hice en un tour de mediodía que me costó 150 BRL (30,3 USD) e incluía un guía local y traslados desde Copacabana .

A continuación, te cuento sobre los principales lugares que visitamos en la Favela Rocinha:

3.1 Centro Deportivo

La primera parada del tour fue en un centro deportivo en donde realizan proyectos sociales .

Allí había un grupo de niños jugando fútbol mientras la gente los animaba. Según el guía, en este sitio hay jugadores que son mejores que Neymar, pero que no tienen publicidad.

Este centro está ubicado en un sector de la favela en donde las viviendas y condiciones de vida son mejores que en otros puntos más alejados.

3.2 Recorrido por la favela

A continuación, iniciamos el recorrido caminando por la favela: primero subimos a un punto en altura en donde tuvimos una vista panorámica y luego comenzamos a internarnos en los estrechos callejones que forman este asentamiento informal.

Me sorprendió lo laberíntico que resulta moverse por la favela y las malas condiciones que tienen algunas viviendas: hay sitios en los que casi no llega luz natural, hay ratas y el aire se siente pesado . Las condiciones en estos sitios resultaron peores de lo que había imaginado.

Durante el recorrido, el guía nos contó de primera mano cómo es la vida en la favela . Además, en el camino nos cruzamos con numerosas personas que nos saludaban. Al parecer, ver grupos de turistas recorriendo el lugar ya se ha vuelto algo cotidiano.

3.3 Mural de La última cena

Un aspecto a destacar de las favela, y que no siempre se tiene en cuenta, es que en estas hay mucha cultura .

Y una forma en las que esta se manifiesta es en las numerosas muestras de arte urbano que se pueden ver durante el recorrido por Rocinha.

Un mural emblemático que visitamos es La última cena al estilo de una favela de Río de Janeiro , la cual fue pintada por un joven artista local que puso su autorretrato al medio de la mesa.

Este mural se encuentra a las afueras de una iglesia que visitamos durante el recorrido.

3.4 Calle comercial

Continuamos el recorrido pasando por las calles más transitadas de la favela, en donde abundan las tiendas comerciales.

En esta parte del recorrido está prohibido utilizar las cámaras en algunos sectores, por lo que se deben guardar los celulares cuando el guía lo indica (y esto es algo que, por seguridad, se debe respetar).

3.5 Vista panorámica

Terminamos la visita en un puente peatonal de hormigón, diseñado por el arquitecto brasileño Oscar Niemeyer , desde donde se tiene una vista panorámica de la Favela Rocinha.

Allí nos tomamos una foto grupal y dimos por finalizado el recorrido, por lo que solo nos restaba esperar el minibús que nos llevaría de vuelta a Copacabana.

4. Consejos para hacer el tour a Rocinha

• El consejo más importante es seguir las instrucciones del guía , especialmente en lo referido al uso de cámaras. Estas se pueden usar con libertad la mayor parte del tour. Sin embargo, hay puntos en los que está prohibido utilizarlas y esto es algo que se debe respetar, ya que de lo contrario se pone en riesgo la seguridad personal y del grupo.
• También recomiendo tener mucho cuidado con las motos . Este es el principal medio de transporte en las favelas y las normas de tránsito son inexistentes, por lo que hay que cruzar las calles con precaución.
• Te sugiero llevar calzado cómodo y cerrado , ya que en el tour hay que caminar bastante y algunas calles son muy empinadas.

5. Lo bueno y lo malo de este tipo de turismo

Los tours a las favelas entran dentro de la categoría de lo que se conoce como «turismo de pobreza» , lo cual no deja de ser un tema controvertido.

Personalmente, no creo que este tipo de turismo sea 100% bueno ni 100% malo, más bien esto depende de cómo se haga.

Algunos aspectos positivos son que puede mover la economía de la favela y romper con algunos mitos sobre las personas que viven allí.

Y algunos aspectos negativos son que puede causar gentrificación y hacer que las personas que allí viven sean vistas como un espectáculo.

Así que, como dije, todo depende de cómo se haga. En cuanto a mi tour, debo decir que quedé bastante conforme con la forma en que llevaron a cabo la actividad.

5 reasons you need to visit Rio's most beautiful favela, Vidigal

Brazilian favelas have earned a blanket reputation for being unsafe, but not all of them are so. In fact, Vidigal is the best place you’ll go in Rio de Janeiro.

Anyone who’s travelled to Brazil, particularly if you’re female, will know it’s one of those countries that raise the eyebrows of all non-travellers. “How will you stay safe? ” they wonder aloud, very pointedly. That goes double when you start talking about a Rio de Janeiro  favela.

The thing is, if you listened to these people, you would be missing out on one of the warmest, most welcoming experiences of your life.

Watch the unique favela buildings come into view as you make your way towards Vidigal.

I ventured with my boyfriend back to his home city of Rio de Janeiro to meet his family. He had a long list of sights he wanted to show me, but at the top of his list was the locally famous favela on top of a mountain: Vidigal.

Why famous? Because sitting high up on a mountain about 10 minutes from Ipanema beach, it boasts some of the best views of the entire city. In a place that’s as beautiful from every angle as Rio, that is quite a boast, and I can confirm that not a word of it is a lie.

That’s not its only pull, however: the people are welcoming, the nightlife is pumping, the hikes are challenging but incredible and riding on the back of a motorbike as you wind your way up the incredibly steep and narrow streets is a memory you’ll keep forever.

Find Vidigal nestled in the mountain, 10 minutes from Ipanema Beach.

Now yes, I was there with a local who blended in which can make a travel experience very different, but never once did I feel unsafe, even to wander a while on my own (except for the very real risk of getting myself lost).

Besides the breathtaking vistas, here are the five things that made Vidigal my favourite place to be.

1. Brazilian street food

Before you begin your journey into Vidigal, you’ll find several stalls at the base, ready to serve up cheap and cheerful street food. On a hot summer day, not much is better than a pastel de queijo (essentially a deep-fried cheese and pastry pocket) washed down with freshly squeezed bamboo juice. And let’s not forget the acai stand for dessert.

There are certainly actual restaurants further inside Vidigal, but what could be better than a bit of street food before or after a night out?

2. Getting to the top of Vidigal

At any given time, a large group of men on motorbikes – or moto taxis – will be hanging around the bottom of Vidigal, ready to take the more daring up the mountain to wherever they need to go (for a fee, of course).

Here, I shut my mouth and let my boyfriend do the talking, as the fee automatically goes up as soon as it’s clear you’re not local – but the price is still more than reasonable at about R$10 reais (about $3) per trip.

Once you’re on the road, hold on tight – but I was told in no uncertain terms that it’s weird and very gringa to hold the shoulders of the person ferrying you on their bike, so just hold the seat and grip your knees tighter – you will be twisting and turning along these labyrinth-like roads and tightly-packed buildings, around other bikes, people and the occasional car.

If the motorbike feels a bit too daring, a mini-van regularly ferries visitors up and down Vidigal. It’s a bit more expensive and will take you longer to find a path (did I mention the very narrow roads?) but the community vibe on board makes the trip a delight – especially if you’re on your way back down after a night of dancing.

3. Hiking to Trilha Morro Dois Irmãos

This hike might only be around 45 minutes to the top, but as it can often feel almost vertical, it isn’t for beginners. However, it does reward those who face the steep and mostly undeveloped path to the peak of Trilha Morro Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers hike) with sweeping vistas of Rio de Janeiro.

Spot Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) on his perch, the brilliant blues of Guanabara Bay and Ipanema Beach and sprawling cityscapes. Above all of it soar several of Rio’s iconic Urubu birds.

You’ll find the trailhead at the top of Vidigal, quite subtly placed behind some public soccer fields. You will possibly have to pay a few reias to gain entry, as the locals have clued on to the hike’s popularity. I’m not sure it was terribly official, but it’s also a very small amount to give back to the community.

4. Bar 180° Alto

I came here on my first night in Rio, and it perfectly set the tone for my whole trip. Two levels of the cliffside Alto Do Vidigal Bar 180° open for lunch, and then turn into a pumping dancefloor as the sun sets.

Dust off your samba moves, sip on a giant Caipirinha cocktail and join in the party as a live band plays. If you can’t dance, and you particularly can’t dance (like me), then just do your best and join in.

Several hours will pass in what only feels like seconds, so if your belly starts to rumble there are plenty of classic Brazilian dishes and bar eats – like gurjão (fried chicken or fish pieces), bolhinos (crispy cod fritters), nachos and hot chips.

The crowd is fun and inclusive and they don’t care how hopeless you are, as long as you get into the spirit. Chances are high that you’ll have a few more friends by the end of the night.

5. Mirante do Arvrão hotel

There is really no way to overhype the view from the top of Vidigal, so it’s really a shame not to see what it looks like at sunset and sunrise. That’s where Vidigal’s locally-run hotel Mirante do Arvrão comes into play.

While the rooms are about triple the size of a standard hotel room, and the decor of each is minimalist and beautiful, this is not the hotel to stay at if you want a five-star experience – for that you should head down the mountain and out of Vidigal to the Sheraton.

Enjoy the simple yet beautiful rooms at Mirante do Arvrão.

This is the hotel to book into if you don’t mind roughing it just a tiny bit to wake up to the best views in Rio. Essentially, it’s favela luxury – an amazing hotel with a few authentic quirks.

When we arrived, the hot water wasn’t working; an issue that isn’t uncommon for the entire favela. There’s also a restaurant and club attached which you can hear from the room, so you need to be able to get into the local Brazilian party spirit – a feat that was very easy to accomplish.

No matter how hard you danced the night away, set your alarm for sunrise and enjoy the view in the provided fluffy robes from the comfort of your private balcony. You won’t be sorry.
