These Are the Five Largest Ships Cruising in the Mediterranean in 2023

The Mediterranean is seeing record-breaking cruise capacity in 2023, with over 170 vessels sailing in the region throughout the year according to the 2023 Cruise Industry News Annual Report .

With its growing popularity, the European region has also been attracting some of the world’s largest cruise ships, such as Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas and MSC Cruises’ new MSC World Europa.

Using data from the  Global Cruise Ship Index  by Cruise Industry News , we have compiled a list of the five biggest cruise vessels sailing in the Mediterranean this year:

Symphony of the Seas Cruise Line: Royal Caribbean International Year Built: 2018 Capacity:  5,448 guests Tonnage:  227,625 Homeports: Barcelona (Spain) and Civitavecchia (Italy)

With 227,625 tons, the Symphony of the Seas is the largest cruise ship sailing in the Mediterranean this year.

Part of Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis Class, the 5,448-guest vessel is currently offering a series of seven-night cruises in the Western Mediterranean . Sailing from Barcelona and Civitavecchia, the ship’s regular itinerary features visits to ports in Spain, Italy and France.

MSC World Europa Cruise Line: MSC Cruises Year Built: 2022 Capacity:  5,400 guests Tonnage:  205,700 Homeports: Barcelona (Spain); Genoa, Messina and Naples (Italy); and Marseille (France)

After entering service for MSC Cruises in late 2022 as one of the world’s largest cruise ships, the MSC World Europa kicked off a year-round program in the Western Mediterranean in April .

Now offering week-long cruises to Spain, Italy, France and Malta, the 205,700-ton vessel is currently the second largest cruise ship sailing in the European inner sea.

AIDAcosma Cruise Line: AIDA Cruises Year Built: 2021 Capacity:  5,400 guests Tonnage:  183,900 Homeports: Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona (Spain); and Civitavecchia (Italy)

Serving the German market, the AIDAcosma holds the third position in the ranking of largest cruise ships cruising in the Mediterranean in 2023.

Part of Carnival Corporation’s XL Clsas, the LNG-powered cruise ship offers a series of seven-night cruises to Spain, Italy and France through the end of the summer. Sailing from Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Civitavecchia, the itineraries feature visits to Ajaccio, La Spezia, Cagliari, Marseille and more.

Costa Toscana Cruise Line: Costa Cruises Year Built: 2021 Capacity:  5,224 guests Tonnage:  182,700 Homeports: Genoa, Cagliari and Civitavecchia (Italy); Marseille (France); and Barcelona (Spain)

Slightly smaller than the AIDAcosma, the Costa Toscana is presently the fourth biggest cruise ship sailing in the Mediterranean .

Part of Costa Cruises’ eight-ship summer program in the region , the 5,224-guest vessel is offering a series of weeklong cruises to Spain, France and Italy that sail to Genoa, Civitavecchia, Naples, Cagliari, Barcelona and Marseille.

Costa Smeralda Cruise Line: Costa Cruises

Year Built: 2019 Capacity:  5,224 guests Tonnage:  182,700 Homeports: Savona, Civitavecchia and Palermo (Italy); Barcelona (Spain); and Marseille (France)

The Costa Smeralda holds the fifth position in the ranking of largest cruise ships sailing in the Mediterranean in 2023.

Along with its sister ship, the Costa Toscana, the 182,700-ton vessel is offering a series of weeklong cruises in the Western Mediterranean this summer . S

ailing from several homeports, the ship’s regular itinerary includes visits to Palermo, Savona and Civitavecchia, in Italy; Barcelona and Ibiza, in Spain; and Marseille, in France.

World’s largest cruise ship arrives in Spain for inaugural European summer sailings

The largest cruise ship in the world has arrived in Barcelona ahead of its inaugural European sailings.

Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas will commence seven-night cruises from the Catalonian capital and Rome starting Sunday.

The mega-ship will call at several popular destinations in the Mediterranean, including Italy’s Florence, Naples and Capri, Provence in France and Malaga in Spain.

At more than 18 decks high, the Oasis Class ship is 362-metres long and weighs more than 237,000 gross tonnes. It has capacity for 6,988 guests and 2,300 crew members.

Having taken more than three years to build, the colossal cruise liner has eight on-board neighbourhoods, including Central Park, where travellers will find more than 20,000 real trees and plants stretching from one end of the deck to the other.

Families seeking an extravagant European cruise experience can book the Ultimate Family Suite, which sleeps up to 10 people and has an in-suite slide, cinema and karaoke area, table tennis and more, split across two levels.

The Boardwalk has seaside charm and family activities, including taking a ride on a hand-carved carousel, while guests can also enjoy dining and drinking at more than 40 restaurants, bars and lounges on board.

Travellers can also enjoy some Royal Caribbean favourites found across several of its cruise ships including a FlowRider surf simulator, a 10-storey high zip-line and the tallest water slide at sea.

Summer entertainment across Wonder’s four stages will see more than 100 performers and technicians bring full-scale productions to life including inTENse , which features the first all-female cast of aerialists, high divers and slackliners at sea.

Having made its maiden voyage in March, cruising from Florida to the Caribbean, Wonder of the Seas will sail in Europe until October.

In November it will once again sail in the US to what will be her new year-round home in Florida. From there, the ship will set off on sailings that explore the Caribbean and The Bahamas.

Including Wonder of the Seas , Royal Caribbean now operates the world’s five biggest cruise vessels, as well as nine of the world’s 20 largest cruise vessels.

MSC Cruises’ Largest Ship Begins Sailing in the Mediterranean

MSC Cruises’ newest ship MSC World Europa is starting her first summer season in the Mediterranean after arriving from the Arabian Gulf this week.

The vessel is MSC’s largest, and the company’s first to be powered by liquefied natural gas. She’s also the world’s highest performing large cruise ship in terms of CO2eq emissions per passenger. World Europa is also the world’s first modern cruise ship to feature solid oxide fuel cell technology powered by LNG.

Highlights of MSC World Europa include the nearly 350-foot-long World Promenade, The Venom Drop @ The Spiral 11-deck slide, and the multipurpose entertainment space Luna Park Arena, which includes three new concert-style shows.

The vessel has 20 bars and lounges and 13 restaurants, including the Chef’s Garden Kitchen in collaboration with chef and TV personality Niklas Ekstedt. The venue features the first-at-sea hydroponic garden and has a focus on natural, fresh ingredients. World Europa also features MSC Cruises’ first onboard microbrewery in partnership with Teo Musso, founder and brewmaster of Italian craft and farm brewery Birra Baladin.

When it comes time for relaxing in the water, guests have seven pools and 13 hot tubs to choose from around the ship.

MSC World Europa features MSC Cruises’ most luxurious Yacht Club complex, with a totally reimagined sundeck spanning two decks and two brand-new Owner Suites.

The ship will spend the summer operating seven-night Mediterranean cruises that visit the ports of Genoa, Naples, Messina, Valletta, Barcelona, and Marseille.

Viking Venus

Launched in May 2021 from Portsmouth, England, Viking Venus features modern amenities and a contemporary design. The ship can hold 930 passengers and 465 crew members. Amenities include multiple pools and shops, as well as a cinema, a live performance theater, a jazz lounge, a spa, a fitness center and a salon. Plus, you can attend a lecture or discussion with the onboard historian, who helps educate passengers on the cultural aspects of each destination. An onboard cooking school, The Kitchen Table, also allows guests to learn about each destination's unique cuisine. 

Cruisers can enjoy daily updated food options at The Restaurant, diverse cuisine at the World Café, expertly paired tasting menus at The Chef's Table and Italian favorites at Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. There are eight dining venues on board in total, in addition to the ship's cooking school at The Kitchen Table and 24/7 room service.

When it's time to rest, there are six types of accommodations to choose from – all with private verandas. The standard Veranda Staterooms measure 270 square feet and feature plush beds, free Wi-Fi access and flat-screen TVs. Higher-tier rooms come with extras like priority shore excursion reservations, priority spa reservations, in-room coffee and free laundry services. Plus, travelers in these cabins will have more space: Rooms reach up to 1,448 square feet and may include separate living and dining areas.

The Viking Venus sails to popular European destinations like Barcelona , Athens , Bangkok , Istanbul , Rome , London , Sydney and Stockholm .

Seven Seas Splendor

Debuted in September 2021, the 746-passenger, 548-crew member Seven Seas Splendor is the newest ship within the Regent fleet. Seven Seas Splendor – along with most of the line's other ships – takes opulence to the next level by equipping each suite with its own private balcony. Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. There are 10 suite categories available, ranging from the smallest Veranda (307 square feet) and Deluxe Veranda suites (308 to 361 square feet) to the largest Regent (4,443 square feet) and Master suites (1,895 to 2,108 square feet). 

Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. At night, enjoy one of five shows at the onboard theater. 

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. For something more formal, opt for a French-inspired meal at Chartreuse, Pan-Asian dishes at Pacific Rim or Compass Rose, the largest restaurant on the ship.

Seven Seas Splendor visits a variety of European and Mediterranean destinations, as well as ports across Europe, the Caribbean, Africa and South America.

Viking Saturn

Debuted in May 2023, the adults-only Viking Saturn has the capacity to hold 930 passengers and 465 crew members. Travelers love the ship's clean Scandinavian design and compact size, which allows it to dock in smaller ports that larger cruise ships cannot reach.

On board, travelers have access to a slew of amenities, including a fitness center, a spa, a library, a state-of-the-art theater, a hair salon, an infinity pool and more. A resident historian is also on board to offer lectures and educational programming about upcoming port destinations. When hunger strikes, Viking Saturn offers an array of dining options, from fresh seafood at World Café to afternoon tea service at Wintergarden to traditional Norwegian cuisine at Mamsen's. Or, learn how to prepare regional dishes from your itinerary at the onboard cooking school.

Starting at 270 square feet, standard staterooms come equipped with king-size mattresses (which can be converted into two twin beds), flat-screen TVs, full-size verandas and bathrooms with heated floors. What's more, each accommodation includes 24-hour room service. Travelers who opt to stay in one of the ship's upgraded suites (which reach up to 1,448 square feet) have access to additional perks such as separate living areas and dining rooms, complimentary laundry services and a welcome bottle of Champagne, among other luxuries.

Viking Saturn sails to a variety of destinations in northern Europe (such as Bergen, Norway; London  and Stockholm ) and the Mediterranean (think: Barcelona, Spain ; Rome ; Athens, Greece ; and Istanbul ).

The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.

Guests also have their choice of cuisine, from alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace to Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. With 550 crew members on board, the ship maintains a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio.

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Resilient Lady

An adults-only, LGBTQ-friendly cruise ship, Resilient Lady has a capacity of 2,770 passengers and 1,150 crew members. Since setting sail in May 2023, Virgin Voyages' third ship has received praise among travelers for its exceptional dining scene and exciting entertainment options. With onboard experiences ranging from acrobatic performances to comedy shows to themed parties, Resilient Lady is best for travelers who are seeking an upbeat and social atmosphere.  

When you've worked up an appetite from your activity-filled day, grab a bite at one of the ship's 20-plus eateries, which serve everything from Mexican to Asian to Italian fare. Although all food is included, reservations are still required at many restaurants. There is also no shortage of bars to choose from, whether you want to sample The Loose Cannon's signature cocktails or sip some bubbly in the Champagne lounge.

Standard Insider rooms range from 105 to 177 square feet. All accommodations come equipped with comforts like flat-screen TVs, rain showers, mood lighting and convertible Seabeds. For more room, opt for one of the ship's RockStar Quarters. These upgraded suites feature extras like a terrace with a hammock, European king-size mattresses and spacious marble bathrooms.

Resilient Lady sails to a variety of destinations in Europe and the South Pacific, including top destinations such as Athens, Greece ; Sydney ; and Dubrovnik, Croatia .

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The Wake boasts the most ambiance of all eateries on Virgin Voyages vessels by far, so make sure to lock in reservations when you can. This upscale restaurant offers prime entrees with plenty of upgrade options for those who want to splurge. Viking Jupiter

Debuted in February 2019, Viking Jupiter is the cruise line's sixth ocean vessel. The ship sleeps up to 930 guests in luxurious staterooms that include everything from large bathrooms to comfortable king-sized beds. As an added bonus, each room is equipped with free Wi-Fi access.

Travelers will have the opportunity to indulge in several onboard activities. They can visit the spa's snow grotto and chill beneath the snowflakes, go for a swim in the infinity pool or let their worries melt away in the hot tub. The Bar and The Living Room offer additional spaces to unwind with a cocktail or mingle with fellow cruisers.

For afternoon tea and light snacks, travelers can stop by Wintergarden, or for a heartier meal, the main dining room, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant or World Café offer scrumptious European delicacies, Chinese fare and everything in between. In the evening, cruisers can catch a live show in The Theater or a destination-themed movie in one of two onboard cinemas.

Recent travelers were wowed by the ship, appreciating its tasteful, minimalist decor. They also found the food delicious and suggested purchasing the upgraded drink package.

Debuted in May 2023, Oceania Cruises' first new ship in more than a decade can hold up to 1,200 passengers and 800 crew members. Vista is the inaugural ship in Oceania's Allura Class, featuring top-of-the-line amenities like a culinary center, an artist loft and an extensive library, along with facilities like a pool, a casino, a spa and a fitness center. Additionally, Vista offers enrichment opportunities like destination-focused seminars led by guest speakers and dynamic musical performances.

One of the highlights of Oceania Vista is its wide array of dining venues, from specialty restaurants like Ember (American fare) and Toscana (Italian cuisine) to the poolside Waves Grill and daily afternoon tea service. In the evening, guests can grab a drink at their choice of several bars and lounges; Vista's immersive mixology program utilizes innovative techniques and trends to create an elevated cocktail experience.

Vista's well-appointed staterooms – which range from 240 to 2,400 square feet – boast balconies, queen-size beds, rainforest showers, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, among other amenities. If you splurge for a suite, you'll enjoy added benefits like iPads, cashmere blankets, complimentary laundry and shoeshine services, access to the Executive Lounge and butler service.

Oceania Vista explores an array of popular destinations in the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, the Mediterranean and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The design of the Vista creates more expansive and contemporary public areas than other ships in Oceania's fleet, so even when the ship is at full capacity, it never feels crowded. Silver Moon

Cruisers seeking an intimate experience should consider booking a trip aboard Silversea's Silver Moon, one of the line's newest ships. Debuted in June 2021, Silver Moon accommodates just 596 passengers. And with 411 crew members, travelers can expect an attentive experience.

One standout amenity is the Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) program. The dining experience aims to introduce passengers to their destinations through food. On board, the S.A.L.T. Lab offers travelers the chance to participate in tastings and workshops, while the S.A.L.T. Kitchen provides a unique dining experience. On shore, foodies can book special cuisine-focused excursions through the program. Not an adventurous eater? Not to worry. Silver Moon boasts seven additional eateries serving everything from pizza to tapas to grilled meat and fish.

Following a delicious meal, travelers will have access to a wealth of amenities, including the spa, a pool, several whirlpools, lounges and a fitness center. When evening rolls around, cruisers can press their luck at the casino or catch a live show.

As with other Silversea ships, Silver Moon boasts all-suite accommodations, ranging in size from 334 to 1,970 square feet. Each suite boasts butler service, marble bathrooms, free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, minibars and large windows. Plus, you'll get a welcome bottle of Champagne. Odyssey of the Seas

Launched in July 2021, the Odyssey of the Seas holds 5,498 passengers and 1,550 crew members. Royal Caribbean's latest ship is the first Quantum Ultra Class vessel to sail in the United States. As a member of this class, Odyssey of the Seas offers standout amenities like RipCord by iFLY, billed as the only skydiving simulator available at sea, and the FlowRider, a 40-foot-long surf simulator. There is also the North Star observation capsule, which hoists guests 300 feet above sea level over the cruise ship to enjoy unparalleled views below. 

In addition to these thrilling activities, the ship comes equipped with standard facilities like pools, an arcade, a spa, a fitness center with classes, kids clubs and shopping venues. There are also 15 dining options, ranging from Japanese fare to all-you-can-eat buffets to Starbucks. For drinks, the ship offers nine bars and lounges, giving passengers plenty of places to enjoy libations. Entertainment options include theatrical performances, live music, a casino, outdoor movie nights and more. 

As far as cabins go, cruisers can choose between Interior, Ocean View, and Balcony staterooms, as well as suite accommodations and new Virtual Balcony rooms. These technologically advanced cabins feature floor-to-ceiling displays that project real-time views of the sights and sounds from the outside of the ship. 

Odyssey of the Seas sails to ports in Europe, as well as to various destinations in the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Cape Liberty, New Jersey.

The top 10 biggest cruise ships in the world

M odern cruise ships continue to grow in size, with the biggest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas , launching at the start of this year, and her sister ship the Star of the Seas expected to surpass her in size.

Both of these ships are operated by Royal Caribbean International, which operates five of the ten largest cruise ships in the world. Carnival Corporation, arguably the biggest cruise company in the world, features three times on the list through its subsidiaries P&O Cruises and Costa Cruises.

All of the heaviest cruise ships in the world were built within the last 20 years, although the majority – six of the ten – were built within the last five years.

So, here are the top ten biggest cruise ships in the world, by gross tonnage. 

10. P&O Cruises MS Arvia : 185,581 gross tonnes

The MS Arvia is P&O Cruises’ fourth ship to be built by German shipyard Meyer Werft. Weighing in at 185,581 gross tonnes, the 345m (1,130-foot) Arvia is slightly larger than her sister ship, the MS Iona . The 20-deck ship is the largest ship commissioned for the British cruise market and has a maximum passenger capacity of 6,264 passengers, with 1,800 crew onboard. 

The ship is the second liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered Excellence-class vessel for P&O, following the Iona . Arvia is powered by a 61,760kW LNG drive system, with a propulsion power of 37 megawatts. The LNG-powered propulsion system allows the vessel to sail at a maximum speed of 21.5 knots.

After being floated out in August 2022, the Arvia mainly operates itineraries around the Caribbean or the Mediterranean.

9. Costa Cruises – Costa Smeralda : 185,010 gross tonnes

The Costa Smeralda is the first LNG-powered vessel in the Costa Cruises fleet. With a gross tonnage of 185,010gt, the 20-deck Excellence-class ship measures 337m (1,106 feet) in length. The second LNG-powered cruise ship to enter operation in the world, she has a maximum capacity of 6,554 passengers with 1,646 crew and a service speed of 21.5 knots.

Construction of the Costa Smeralda began at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, in September 2017. Meyer Turku collaborated with the Meyer Werft Papenburg shipyard to develop and integrate the LNG propulsion plant for the ship. She is fitted with four 16-cylinder, Caterpillar MaK 16VM46DF engines, with 15.4 megawatts (20,710 horsepower) output per engine, resulting in a maximum power of  37 megawatts (50,000 horsepower).

The ship, which was named after the Emerald Coast of Sardinia, entered service in December 2019 , departing Savona on its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean, where it has sailed since.

8. Costa Cruises – Costa Toscana : 186,364 gross tonnes

The Costa Toscana is the sister ship of the Costa Smeralda and is also powered by LNG . measuring 337m (1,106 feet) long and weighing in at 186,364 gross tonnes, the Toscana has a maximum capacity of 6,338 passengers and 1,678 staff across her 20 decks.

Like her sister ship, the Toscana was also built at the Meyer shipyard in Finland, with construction completed in 2021. She is also powered by four MaK-Caterpillar engines, with a total power of 57.2 megawatts (76,706 horsepower), and two ABB Azipod motors , resulting in a service speed of 17 knots.

Named in homage to the Tuscany region of Italy, Costa Toscana mainly sails around the Mediterranean Sea but Costa Cruises has also used the ship to sail itineraries further afield, such as around Brazil and the UAE.

7. MSC Cruises – MSC World Europa : 215,863 gross tonnes

The only entry in the top ten from MSC Cruises, MSC World Europa measures 333m (1,094 feet) in length. With 215,863 gross tonnage, she can house more people than any other ship in the MSC fleet: up to 6,762 passengers across 2,633 cabins spread over 22 decks, in addition to 2,138 crew.

Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, the World Europa ’s LNG-power propulsion system was subcontracted to Finland-based Wärtsilä. Five LNG-powered, 14-cylinder Wartsila 46DF dual-fuel engines power the vessel, with a propulsion power of 44 megawatts ( 59,005 horsepower). She also features nitrogen oxide reduction (NOR) units, two Wartsila LNGPac fuel storage and supply systems, seven thrusters, and two fixed-pitch propellers. 

The MSC World Europa was floated out at the end of 2021 and was initially used as an accommodation vessel for fans attending the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the ship berthed at Doha Port in Qatar during the tournament. Following the competition, the ship subsequently travelled several routes around the UAE, before sailing to the Mediterranean, where it has sailed itineraries since.

6. Royal Caribbean International – Allure of the Seas : 225,282 gross tonnes

The first of many entries on this list operated by Royal Caribbean, Allure of the Seas weighs in at 225,282 gross tonnes. Measuring 362m (1,187 feet), she is only 50mm (2 inches) longer than her sister ship the Oasis of the Seas . The Allure has a maximum capacity of 6,780 passengers and 2,200 crew across 18 decks.

Built at the Turku Shipyard in Finland, the Allure took two years to build , floating out in 2010. She features six Wärtsilä 46 diesel engines with a total power output of 97 megawatts (130,053 horsepower). It is propelled by three electric Azipod azimuth thrusters. The ship can travel at a cruising speed of 22 knots.

With a homeport of Galveston, Texas in the US, the Allure mainly serves itineraries around the Bahamas but she is scheduled to sail routes around the Mediterranean in 2025.

5. Royal Caribbean International – Oasis of the Seas : 226,838 gross tonnes

The oldest ship on this list, the Oasis of the Seas has been in service for over a decade. She was the biggest cruise ship at the time when floated out in 2009, with a gross tonnage of 226,838gt and a length of 360m (1,181 feet). The Oasis has a maximum capacity of 6,699 passengers and 2,181 staff across 18 decks.

The Oasis took two years to build at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, with the keel laid on 12 November 2007 and the ship arriving at her homeport of Port Everglades in Florida, US, on 13 November 2009.

The Oasis is powered by eight Wärtsilä V12 diesel engines, which generate 5.6 megawatts (7,500 horsepower) each, alongside four bow thrusters. The main propulsion system consists of three 20-megawatt (26,820 horsepower) electric Azipod motors, resulting in a combined propulsion power of 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) and a standard cruising speed of 23 knots.

The Oasis mainly operates routes around the Caribbean, but occasionally repositions to offer itineraries in the Mediterranean.

4. Royal Caribbean International – Harmony of the Seas : 226,963 gross tonnes

The third Oasis-class ship built by Royal Caribbean, Harmony of the Seas weighed in bigger than her existing sister ships at launch in 2016, with 226,963 gross tonnage, but she has since been surpassed by newer vessels. With a total length of 362m (1,188 feet), Harmony has a maximum capacity of 6,780 passengers and 2,300 staff across 18 decks.

Royal Caribbean placed an order with STX France for the construction of Harmony of the Seas in December 2012. The first steel for the ship was cut at STX France’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard in September 2013, while the keel-laying ceremony was held in May 2014.

The Harmony is powered by three 18.9-megawatt Wärtsilä 16V46 16-cylinder main generator diesel engines and three Wärtsilä 12V46 12-cylinder engines producing 13.9 megawatts each. The propulsion power is provided by three electric Azipod azimuth thrusters and manoeuvring is assisted by four 5.5-megawatt Wärtsilä CT 3500 tunnel thrusters. The propulsion system results in 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) and enables the ship to sail at a standard speed of 23 knots.

Harmony of the Seas embarked on her inaugural seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona, Spain, in June 2016, and currently operates itineraries around the Western Caribbean from her homeport of Galveston, Texas in the US.

3. Royal Caribbean International – Symphony of the Seas : 228,081 gross tonnes

At launch in 2018, the Symphony of the Seas surpassed the Harmony as the biggest cruise ship, weighing in at 228,081 gross tonnes. Measuring 361m (1,185 feet), the Symphony has a maximum capacity of 6,680 passengers and 2,200 staff across 18 decks and was the testing ground for Royal Caribbean's new muster drill . With a total length of 361m (1,185 feet), She is roughly 30 metres (98 feet) longer than the largest military ships , the US Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and the USS Gerald R. Ford .

The keel-laying ceremony for the Symphony of the Seas was held in October 2015 at STX’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard in France, and the ship sailed out in June 2017. She is powered by six diesel sets, each composed of three Wärtsilä 16V46D engines and three Wärtsilä 12V46D engines, as well as three 20-megawatt electric Azipod main engines – resulting in 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) of propulsion power and a standard cruising speed of 22 knots.

The Symphony commenced her seven-day maiden voyage from Barcelona in April 2018, and since then has mainly operated itineraries around the Caribbean from her homeports of Miami, New York, and Fort Lauderdale.

2. Royal Caribbean International – Wonder of the Seas : 235,600 gross tonnes

Royal Caribbean's flagship, Wonder of the Seas is the fifth Oasis-class cruise ship built for the cruise company. Weighing in at 235,600 gross tonnes, the Wonder was the largest ship in the world when she was completed in January 2022. Measuring 362m (1,187 feet) in length, the 18-deck Wonder has a maximum capacity of 7,084 guests across its 2,867 staterooms, as well as housing 2,369 crew.

Weighing 248,663 gross tonnes and measuring 365 metres (1,1967 feet), the Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world. Christened on 23 January 2024, the Icon has a maximum capacity of 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew across 20 decks. She is the lead ship of the new Icon-class, with a sister ship the Star of the Seas due to be delivered in 2025 and another ship planned for delivery in 2026.

Built by Meyer Turku in Finland, the Icon is the first ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet that can be powered by LNG. It uses three Wärtsilä 14V46DF and three Wärtsilä 12V46DF for its main generator engines, which provide 67.5 megawatts of energy to run the ship. She is propelled by three 20-megawatt Azipod thrusters as well as five 4.8-megawatt Wärtsilä WTT-45 CP bow thrusters, with a cruising speed of 22 knots.

After sailing her maiden voyage on 27 January 2024, the Icon now sails year-round itineraries of seven-night trips around the Eastern and Western Caribbean from her homeport of Miami, Florida.

January 2024: Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean

Never one to do things by halves, Royal Caribbean has created the world's largest cruise ship – at a whopping 1,198 feet (365m), with space for 7,600 passengers on board. Icon of the Seas, the first of the line's Icon-class ships, is due to set sail in January 2024 – and people are excited about it. In fact, when the ship's first sailing went online in October 2022, the cabins sold out in hours. Icon features 20 decks and eight themed neighbourhoods, including Thrill Island, home to the largest waterpark at sea and six record-breaking slides; and Chill Island, which boasts the line's first swim-up bar at sea.

With a pool for every day of the week, including the largest at sea and a suspended infinity pool, as well as more than 40 restaurants, bars and nightclubs, you'll never be bored on board. For more fun, head out on the line's largest ice rink or marvel at the ship's waterfall. For entertainment, visit the AquaDome (pictured), which is perched on top of Icon and hosts aqua shows and theatre by night.

Cabins span 28 categories and include Family Infinite Balcony suites, with a separate bunk alcove for kids, decked out with TVs, beds and chill-out areas (pictured), or to splash the cash, book the three-storey family townhouses. Icon of the Seas will sail year-round, seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean trips from Miami.

February 2024: Sun Princess, Princess Cruises

When Sun Princess launches this year she will be Princess Cruises’ largest (and 16th) ship, with room for 4,300 passengers. Currently under construction in Italy, Sea Princess will pay tribute to Europe’s ship-building heritage, with public spaces inspired by Santorini’s famous terraces and the beautiful Piazza found on Princess’s other ships.

Sun Princess will have a staggering 29 restaurants, lounges and bars. We’re predicting the most popular spot will be the three-storey Piazza, with its enormous LED screen and various eating and drinking spots – including the Coffee Currents cafe, a new concept for Princess. There’s also the Dome, a glass dome with an indoor-outdoor pool that transforms into a stage at night and will be the setting for adrenaline-fuelled acrobatic performances.

Sun Princess’s 2,157 total staterooms (including 50 suites and 100 connecting rooms) will include a new cabin category. Passengers who bag one of the new Signature Collection cabins will enjoy luxury amenities and access to the Signature restaurant, as well as the Signature Collection sundeck and lounge. Sun Princess’s inaugural season will focus on the western Mediterranean.

March 2024: Ama Magdalena, AmaWaterways

Although AmaMagdalena will have just 30 staterooms, there’ll be no shortage of space – all will have a twin balcony design, and will measure between 237 and 516 square feet (22sqm and 48sqm respectively). Amenities include the whirlpool (located on the ship’s sundeck) and a large fitness room, while the main restaurant will specialise in Western and Latin American cuisine.

Wondering about the name? It’s a nod to her home turf – Colombia’s Magdalena River. AmaWaterways will become the first major cruise line to offer sailings along this particular river, and they’re expected to be especially popular with wildlife fans, including twitchers keen to see Colombia’s 1,900 bird species (bonus points if you spot a rare Cianeguo hummingbird).

March 2024: AmaLilia, AmaWaterways

AmaLilia's 41 staterooms will accommodate 82 guests, and the swankiest cabins include the 13 suites, which have marble bathrooms featuring bathtubs as well as showers, and twin balconies from which to admire the views of the Nile. Africa's longest river will be her home turf, more specifically the stretches which weave past Egypt's the Great Sphinx and the three Pyramids of Giza.

There will be just two restaurants – a main restaurant and Chef's Table, for fine dining. Both will regularly serve up Egyptian delicacies, although it's not the only way in which guests can gain an insight into this beautiful region. The ship's crew will include an Egyptologist, and passengers who don't fancy joining group tours of the archaeological sites lining the Nile can sign up for various exclusive excursions, including private tours of the tomb of Queen Nefertari.

April 2024: Avalon Alegria, Avalon Waterways

Avalon Waterways' newest ship will have 37 Panorama Suites and 14 staterooms, but don't worry if you don't bag a suite – Avalon Alegria's staterooms will be 30% larger than the ones on other Avalon ships. The vessel has been designed to make the most of the views, with panoramic windows throughout and a sky-deck which includes its very own premium lounges. It's easy to stay connected, too – the ship will use Starlink for lightning-fast wifi. The best bit? It's included in the price.

This particular ship is all about the added extras, whether it's the extra space in the staterooms, the window-facing beds (a rarity on river boats) or the way guests can hire fitness gear from the onboard gym. When it comes to dining, it's all about quality over quantity. Head to the main dining room for delicious buffets or to the Panorama Dining Room for decadent afternoon teas and four-course dinners.

April 2024: Amadeus Nova, Amadeus River Cruises

Amadeus Nova will have 12 suites with balconies and 67 exterior cabins with panoramic windows. The most sought-after spots look set to be the Lido Bar on the sun deck, along with the elegant Cafe Vienna for that all-important caffeine fix. She will sail along the Danube, offering cruises between Vienna and Bucharest and Passau and Budapest.

Amadeus Nova will be a seriously sustainable ship, relying on hybrid diesel-electric power and engines which significantly reduce emissions with the help of various hi-tech filters and catalysts. Heat recovery systems use excess heat from the engine room to heat public areas and highly insulated glass minimises heat loss in winter.

May 2024: Queen Anne, Cunard Line

Love a fun fact? When the Queen Anne sets sail in 2024, she’ll be the 249th ship to sail under the Cunard flag, and her launch will mark the first time since 1999 that Cunard has had four ships sailing the seas simultaneously. Her 3,000 passengers will stay in cabins spread over 14 decks, and there will be a huge selection of restaurants (15 in total), ranging from Cunard staples such as the Princess Grill to dining concepts being rolled out by Cunard for the first time.

There will be six categories of accommodation and cabins have been designed by Sybille de Margerie, whose portfolio includes Atlantis, The Royal Residences in Dubai. The ship’s piece de resistance will almost certainly be the three-storey lobby, closely followed by the ornate 835-seat Royal Court Theatre. Another reason to love this ship, which will initially sail the waters of Northern Europe? It will be helmed by Inger Klein Thorhauge – Cunard’s first female captain.

June 2024: Silver Ray. Silversea

Silver Ray will be a sister ship to (and a mirror image of) Silver Nova. Silver Ray will be similarly spacious, with one of the highest space-to-guest ratios of any ship in Silversea's fleet. She'll have a maximum capacity of 728 passengers, and with 544 crew passengers, you can expect to be waited on hand and foot – thanks in part to the cruise line's legendary butler service. The eight restaurants will include several which have become Silversea staples, including S.A.L.T for regional cuisine.

Public areas will include the pool deck, Dusk Bar and Arts Cafe, and further details about onboard amenities will be released prior to her first sailing in June 2024. She'll spend her first few months sailing around the Mediterranean, offering itineraries which take in Athens, Venice and Rome.

June 2024: Viking Vela, Viking Cruises

Bagging a room with a view won’t be an issue on Viking Vela – every stateroom will have its own veranda. The 499 cabins can accommodate a maximum of 998 guests, and the ship’s restaurants will include Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant, The Chef's Table and the World Cafe. Keep an eye out for the onboard art collection, which includes several paintings by Edvard Munch.

The amenity many passengers will love is the spa, more specifically the snow grotto and thermal area, inspired by Scandinavian bathing rituals. The idea is that passengers alternate between the snow grotto and the sauna (although we totally understand the temptation to stick to the latter!). The ship will specialise in Mediterranean cruises.

June 2024: American Liberty, American Cruise Lines

There will be just 100 guests on American Liberty, a compact vessel which American Cruise Lines says will offer expedition-style river sailing, thanks to its ability to slip into smaller ports. Every cabin will have a balcony, and it will have one particularly cool amenity – an activity platform at the stern of the boat designed for passengers who fancy a watersports session, or (if the weather allows) a dip in whichever river it's floating down.

American Liberty will spend her inaugural season sailing around New England's islands, a region which has inspired the decor – think homely colour palettes, furnishings and artworks. Impressively, American Cruise Lines currently has five new ships under construction, some of which will offer sailings along the Mississippi and Columbia Rivers.

July 2024: Porto Mirante, Riviera Travel

Porto Mirante will accommodate 120 guests in 60 cabins. Highlights include the sun deck with its splash pool – perfect for those days when the mercury cranks up – and the spacious lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows.

The ship will initially stick to the Douro River, offering seven-night sailings which depart and finish in Porto. The sailings are ideal for cruise fans with a dislike of unexpected added extras – the price of every cruise includes transfers, all onboard meals, a superior drinks package, complimentary onboard tea and coffee, plus wifi.

July 2024: Utopia of the Seas, Royal Caribbean

This will be one of the largest ships to launch in 2024, with room for 5,668 passengers. But it’s not the size which sets Utopia apart – there will be several Royal Caribbean firsts, including a Caribbean tiki bar, an immersive dining experience (details of which are yet to be revealed) and the longest dry slide at sea.

Utopia, which will be an Oasis class ship, will initially offer Caribbean sailings, the departure point for which will be Florida. Guests certainly won’t be going hungry – there will be 11 complimentary dining options, including a poolside food truck; as well as 12 speciality restaurants; plus 13 bars where passengers can enjoy a sundowner.

August 2024: Explora II, Explora Journeys

Explora II’s 461 suites will include 371 Ocean Terrace and Ocean Grand Terrace Suites, 22 Ocean Residences and – for those with cash to splash – one truly spectacular Owner’s Residence. Passengers can soak up the views from some of the largest balconies at sea, and all suites will have floor-to-ceiling windows and spacious walk-in wardrobes with seated vanity areas.

Passengers who can drag themselves away from their suites can take a dip in four pools (three are outdoor and one is indoor with a retractable roof) or retreat to one of 64 poolside cabanas. Did we mention the spa, which will cover 27,000 square feet (2,500sqm)? In addition to nine treatment rooms there’ll be a beauty salon and thermal area. Explora II will initially offer Mediterranean itineraries before heading for the Arabian Gulf.

November 2024: Estrela, APT Travel-marvel

Bigger is definitely better on board when it comes to Estrela, which will have the largest pool of any ship sailing along Portugal’s Douro River, along with a putting green, supersized fitness centre and various areas designed without outdoor exercise in mind. There will be 60 suites and staterooms and the ship will have a maximum capacity of 120 passengers.

Estrela’s sailings will focus on Portugal and APT was keen that its newest ship reflected the destination. They commissioned Portuguese ship builders to construct the vessel and paid homage to the destination in a variety of ways, including via the decor, cuisine and entertainment.

December 2024: Disney Treasure, Disney Cruise Line

Now for something guaranteed to appeal to younger cruisers. Disney Treasure, the sister ship to Disney Wish, has been designed with explorers in mind, and pays tribute to Walt Disney’s love of travel with decor inspired by wanderlust-inducing Disney movies such as Aladdin and Zootopia . Highlights will include a Marvel-themed dining experience and 1923, a restaurant filled with artwork from Disney’s most famous animated films. The ship's inaugural season will be spent in the eastern and western Caribbean.

The vast majority of the ship’s 1,256 staterooms will offer an ocean view, while 70% will have a veranda. Other highlights will include the Grand Hall, where passengers can meet their favourite Disney characters; the Walt Disney Theatre, which will be the setting for Broadway-quality shows; and the Hero Zone, a fun-filled area where passengers can take part in game show-style competitions and sign up for action-packed physical challenges.

Spring 2025: Alma, Tui Cruises

Finally a look ahead into 2025, more specifically at the first newbuild ship being launched by TUI River Cruises. When TUI Alma sets sail next year she’ll have 62 cabins spread over four decks. We’re predicting that the top deck, with its sun lounger-surrounded pool, will be the most popular spot, although we’re also excited about the cuisine – the ship’s restaurants will include one specialising in Portuguese delicacies.

The ship’s first sailings will take place in spring 2025, and Alma will initially be based on Portugal’s Douro River, offering seven-night sailings that start and finish in Porto. The sailings are designed to highlight five specific riverside locations, including Entre-os-Rios, Peso de Regua, Vega de Terron and Barca d’Alva.

June 2025: Allura, Oceania Cruises

Oceania, which will have 613 staterooms and will initially offer itineraries focusing on the eastern Mediterranean, says that Allura will have the most spacious standard staterooms at sea – they’ll cover 291 square feet (27sqm). Space won't be the only thing in abundance – there'll be one chef for every 10 guests, a reminder that Oceania Cruises takes its food very seriously. Details of the restaurants are yet to be revealed, but there will be five in total and every venue will pay tribute to a specific type of cuisine.

Allura will spend her first summer sailing around the Mediterranean (her first sailing will be a seven-day voyage from Athens to Istanbul, departing in early June 2025), before heading to Canada and New England. Her first winter will be spent in the Caribbean, and her launch will bring the total number of ships in Oceania’s fleet to eight.

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas. These were my 8 favorite amenities on the world's largest cruise ship.

• Royal Caribbean invited me to spend three complimentary nights on its new Icon of the Seas  in January.
• My eight favorite amenities included the waterpark and jazz bar.
• I've yet to see most of the amenities on my list on other cruise ships.

There's a reason Royal Caribbean's new mega-cruise ship is only operating seven-night sailings .

The 1,196-foot-long, 20-deck Icon of the Seas is packed with bars, restaurants, and things to do. Any shorter of an itinerary, and you might not have time to experience all it has to offer.

If you're a frequent cruiser — especially with Royal Caribbean — amenities like the mini-golf course and water playground may not seem exciting.

But of all the activities the new world's largest cruise ship has to offer, my eight favorites are, for the most part, ones I've yet to see on another vessel.

Take a look at what made the cut.

1. The six-slide waterpark

It wouldn't be a roundup of Icon of the Seas' best amenities without a mention of its waterpark.

Plenty of family-friendly cruise ships have waterslides, but few have six — or even one that requires a multi-person raft.

However, if you don't like the feeling of your stomach dropping, I'd advise skipping the 46-foot-tall drop slide.

2. The adult-only suspended infinity pool

The 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas has seven pools and nine hot tubs. As a kid-fearing adult, I loved the grown-ups-only suspended infinity pool.

I spent my time there perched at one of its in-water loungers, contently splashing my legs around the water, wondering if I actually hated cruises.

While I would've preferred a quieter atmosphere (the DJ did not, in fact, play smooth jazz), the pool's views, day beds, and lack of screaming children were hard to beat.

3. The Crown’s Edge thrill 'ride'

There's no need to grab coffee before harnessing up for the part-zipling, part-agility Crown's Edge course. You'll be jolted awake when the floor drops from beneath your feet, leaving you dangling 154 feet above the ocean before the zipline kicks in.

Unfortunately, it comes with two costs: $49 and a spike of anxiety.

4. The 'Wizard of Oz' and 'Aqua Action!' shows

If you hate cruise shows, Icon of the Seas could make you change your mind.

The ship's riff on Broadway-approved "Wizard of Oz" — 16-piece live orchestra and flying bed included — delighted me, a hater of most musicals.

For something less traditional, the semi-circle AquaDome theater hosts a compelling multi-disciplinary swim, dive, and aerial show reminiscent of Cirque du Soleil.

It's the first show-at-sea I've seen with a waterfall and nine-foot-tall robotic arms, and so far, it's one of my favorites.

5. The live jazz bar

Ya like jazz? So do I.

Icon of the Seas has plenty of live music venues — including rowdy karaoke and dueling pianos bars, if that counts. But if you're a jazz fan or looking for a peaceful nightcap, none of these options will top the live music at Lou's Jazz 'n Blues.

6. The customizable Mediterranean-style wrap at the five-stall food hall

The mega-ship's food hall wasn't nearly as diverse or exciting as the one on Norwegian Prima .

But compared to the rest of my mediocre meals on Icon of the Seas — including dinner at a specialty restaurant — my complimentary pork pita wrap from the food hall's Mediterranean-inspired stall was admittedly pretty decent.

The Cava -like meal was balanced, succulent, and filling. Ending it with a strawberry nutella crepe from one of the vendors didn't hurt either.

7. The Pearl Café with sweeping ocean views

Everyone takes a picture inside the Pearl . But few people know that the best part about the glittering structure isn't what's inside it — it's what's behind it: the Pearl Café.

Admittedly, the food wasn't standout.

But it's 2024. In this era, we don't dine for food. We dine for vibes . And the Pearl Café was definitely "serving" (even with its mediocre sandwiches).

At first glance, I had snubbed the dining and lounge area as a rip-off of a generic airport coffee shop. But during my three days on Icon, I returned to the centrally located space more often than expected. It turns out it's a great place to get some work done.

8. The lounging pods that tower above passerbys

Speaking of vibes, if you're looking for a secluded place to drink (as in, not the swim-up pool bar), few will top the Overlook Pods, perched just behind the AquaDome.

If you want to feel like you're drinking in a nest atop a tree, bring your coffee-infused cocktail from nearby Rye and Bean to one of the elevated pods. .

Just don't drink too much. What goes up must come down. And to get down from the pods, you'll have to take the stairs.

LAUDERDALE, Fla.,  (May 3, 2024) – Astrotourism is top of mind for travelers making special trips for phenomenal experiences in the sky—and with the recent “take-your-breath-away” total solar eclipse, thousands of cruisers onboard Emerald Princess and Discovery Princess off the coast of Mexico caught a glimpse of the astounding total darkness event.

The next, not-to-be-missed total solar eclipse takes place on August 12, 2026, and once again a Princess cruise ship will be perfectly positioned, this time in northern Spain, to witness this bucket list event - two minutes and 18 seconds of totality. The 3,660-guest Sky Princess departs Southampton August 8, 2026, on a 14-day Mediterranean cruise, highlighted with total eclipse viewing while the ship is in its path at sea off the coast of Spain.

The Total Eclipse Sky Princess Voyage goes on sale May 23, 2024, with rates starting at $2,199* per person. This incredible, 14-day Mediterranean cruise sailing takes place August 8-22, 2026, roundtrip from Southampton (London), and visits seven historical and vibrant ports, including:

• Cherbourg, France - one of France’s greatest ports with art and history museums, its basilica, the Ravalet castle and the Cité de la Mer maritime museum.
• Bilbao, Spain – located in northern Spain, Bilbao is surrounded by green mountains and is the de facto capital of Basque Country, with a skyscraper-filled downtown. It’s famed for the Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

• La Coruña, Spain – in the Galicia region of northwest Spain, it’s known for its Roman lighthouse, the Tower of Hercules, which has sweeping coastal views.
