Dodge Journey Check Engine Light On: Why and What to Do

The check engine is the most common warning light that appears in the Dodge Journey’s instrument cluster.  Well over half of this site’s content is related to solving the various reasons why the check engine light comes on.

The good news is that the check engine light indicates that there are Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in your Journey’s computer , which is a very good thing.  DTC’s really help save time determining what is wrong with your vehicle.

The check engine light is often referred to as the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Service Engine Soon light.  All three terms are 100% interchangeable.

Common questions, what are trouble codes.

Trouble codes are a number sequence of letters and numbers that correspond with a standardized list of problems that can occur in any vehicle, including the Dodge Journey . Some of them are Dodge specific, while most have the same meaning no matter who made the vehicle.

Common OBD II Codes 

The most common of all trouble codes is P0420 (it indicates your Dodge Journey’s catalytic converter isn’t scrubbing pollutants efficiently).

Here are some of the other most common codes:  

• P0442 – Small EVAP leak (most commonly fixed by tightening a loose gas cap or replacing it)
• P0300 – Random misfire (bad ignition coil(s), spark plugs, or spark plug wires).
• P0128 – Engine running too cool (almost always caused by a thermostat that’s stuck open)
• P0172 – Air Fuel mixture too rich (there are many causes, including oxygen sensors, leaking injectors, or too much fuel pressure)

The most common codes are related to the emissions system .  Some of them are as easy to fix as replacing your Journey’s.  Others require serious diagnostic tests from a repair shop.

How to Pull Trouble Codes on the Dodge Journey

You can either pull the trouble codes from your Journey’s PCM (Powertrain Control Module) yourself, or you can bring your vehicle to a parts store or shop to have it scanned.

Pull Them Yourself  

You can put a scan tool into the OBD II port and pull codes out of the diagnostic system yourself.  Any vehicle made for the 1996 model year and up uses the same protocol.

You can usually find the OBD II port underneath the Journey’s steering wheel. The exact location of the port is going to depend on what model year you have. If you don’t see it check the owner’s manual or do a quick google image search.

Once your scanner is online, you can pull the codes. You should see a retrieve codes option.

Take Your Carortruck to a Shop or Parts Store

If you don’t have a scan tool, you can take your Journey to the local parts store.  Most of them are happy to pull the codes for you for free . 

A lot of auto shops also offer free scan service, but you may find pressured into authorizing whatever repairs they suggest on the spot.

Once you have the codes in hand, you can look them up and determine what’s wrong with your Journey.

There are three ways to reset the Dodge Journey’s check engine light.  We recommend trying to identify the problem and fixing it before resetting the check engine light.

1. Fix and Wait

The best way to clear the check engine light is to pull the trouble code, identify and fix the issue and then drive your Journey around until the module that threw the code recognizes that the problem is fixed. 

Sometimes it can take a few drive cycles for your vehicle’s check engine light to shut down.  Other times, it’ll happen as soon as you fire the vehicle up.  Some folks prefer to clear the code and see if it comes back on

2. Use an OBDII Scanner

You can use an OBDII scanner to turn off your Journey’s check engine light.  The catch is, that if you don’t fix the problem, the light will turn on again.

This is done by connecting a scan tool to your Journey’s PCM and choosing the “clear codes” option.

Once you’ve identified and fixed the issue, wait for three or four days of normal driving to see if the Check Engine Light turns back on.

If it does not come back on after this period, then you can assume that your Dodge Journey is fixed and the light won’t be turning back on.

3. Disconnect the Battery

If you’ve identified and fixed the issue that caused your Journey’s Check Engine Light to come on, resetting the light is as simple as disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. This can be done by unhooking both cables from the battery terminals (negative cable first) and waiting 30 seconds before reconnecting them.

Once the battery is reconnected, your Check Engine Light should be reset and should no longer be illuminated. If the light does come back on again after you reset it, then it means that the issue has not been properly fixed and needs further attention.

Will a Vehicle Fail Inspection With the Check Engine Light On

If you are looking to get your Dodge Journey through emissions and the check engine light is on, it is an automatic fail in almost every State in the Union.  It doesn’t matter why the check engine light is on, it only matters that a code is stored. 

Here’s a list of the emissions regulations of each State .

You can’t reset a check engine light to circumvent emissions requirements.  When you reconnect the battery, the OBD II system is going to need several drive cycles to qualify to take an emissions test, which will give it enough time to recognize the issue.

Can You Drive With the Check Engine Light On?

Whether you can drive your Journey with the check engine light on depends on the code(s) that triggered the check engine light.  

You certainly can’t drive the Dodge Journey with the check engine light flashing.   A flashing check engine light indicates that there is a serious problem with the engine.

A flashing Check Engine Light typically indicates a serious issue with your Journey and should not be ignored.  It usually indicates a catastrophic misfire that can dump raw fuel into the exhaust system, which can damage the catalytic converter and cause backfiring.  Do not drive your vehicle with a flashing check engine light .

Let’s illuminate the dashboard warning light issue. 

Dashboard warning light triggers are usually standard across Dodge models – including the Dodge Grand Caravan and most Dodge Ram vehicles. Here are some of the most common issues:

1. Gas Cap Problems

A loose, broken, or missing gas cap can trigger the check engine light on your dash.  

Why? The gas cap helps maintain the fuel pressure inside the fuel tank. When faulty, it could affect the fuel system and reduce fuel economy. Your car’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) will register the P0440 trouble code if there are issues with the gas cap.

Note : You can use an OBD II scanner to read the code and confirm this. Most Dodge and Ram Vehicles are compatible with it. 

2. Failing Catalytic Converter 

The catalytic converter is a part of the exhaust system. But it tends to clog over time , reducing how well it can remove carbon monoxide from the exhaust gases. 

A clogged catalytic converter can trigger the engine warning light when the buildup of carbon monoxide emissions in the exhaust system causes overheating and poor engine performance. If your clogged catalytic converter isn’t functioning properly, the OBD II scanner will show a P0420 engine code. 

3. Faulty Spark Plugs or Spark Plug Wires 

When you turn on your car, the spark plugs (and spark plug wires) receive high-voltage electricity through the ignition coil. Each spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture that starts the engine. 

A dirty or worn spark plug (or bad ignition coil) may lead to an engine misfire (and poor engine performance), which triggers the check engine light. Faulty spark plugs can also impact your fuel economy. Your ECU will register a P0300 or P0171 code if your spark plugs or plug wires are the issue.

4. Faulty Oxygen Sensor (O2 Sensor)

When the ECU receives inaccurate readings from the oxygen sensor, it supplies the engine with the wrong amount of fuel and air, leading to an engine misfire, poor engine performance, and bad fuel economy.  

Why does this happen? The oxygen sensor is constantly exposed to hot exhaust gases, which results in its deterioration over time. Depending on the specific oxygen sensor problem, the P0175 , P0713, P0171, or P0162 check engine light codes may appear.

5. Faulty Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF)

The mass airflow sensor (MAF) sensor measures how much air enters the engine. When it malfunctions, the engine receives the wrong fuel-air mixture, resulting in a misfire and an active CEL. The engine code for a faulty MAF is P0101 , but several other check engine light codes often appear simultaneously. 

6. A Vacuum Leak 

The vacuum system pushes gas fumes through the engine to reduce harmful emissions. It also provides a vacuum environment to control RPMs. 

If the vacuum system leaks , unmetered air enters the combustion chamber. This affects the air-fuel mixture, resulting in an engine misfire and an active CEL. The ECU will register a P2279 diagnostic trouble code if this happens.

Now that you know some likely culprits for your illuminated check engine light, let’s look at what to do next. 

What to Do If Your Dodge Check Engine Light Turns On?

Besides reading the specific error code, the key trick to assessing the CEL severity on your Dodge Grand Caravan or another model is observing the way it turns on. You may see a flashing light, a constant light, or even a check engine light that only comes on occasionally. 

1. Check Engine Illuminates under Certain Circumstances 

Take note of any performance change when the check engine light turns on. If the change is significant, it’s likely that a component is about to fail. So, get your vehicle looked at soon. 

2. Check Engine Light Is Constantly On

If your check engine light remains illuminated, it’s certain something needs fixing or that a service is due. While your vehicle may perform without any issues , it’s best to take it to a professional mechanic as soon as possible. 

3. Check Engine Light Is On with Performance Issues

If you notice a constant performance drop in addition to your illuminated check engine light, then it’s likely your vehicle is in “limp mode.” Modern cars use this mode to limit the speed and engine power to ensure vehicle protection. bad plugs most likely they need to be changed at 30 k, bad gas, transmission going bad,so many different things can be wrong

Blinking check engine light is bad. Real bad. Continuing to drive it can lead to converter damage.

Have you plugged a tester in to check if any codes pop up? Just like @2late4u stated, it could be many things, but continuing to drive is probably not the best idea. If you don't have a tester, plenty of places that will run a reader for free.

A blinking Check light ALWAYS means there is a MAJOR issue that requires IMMEDIATE attention, and is typically so urgent it is advisable to stop the car at once and have it towed. Though I must admit I have driven up to 5 miles with a blinking CE light and the car shuddering and jumping due to sever firing issues. It can be something as benign as a bad plug or as catastrophic as a faulty Crank or Cam sensor. Both of those latter can result in catastrophic failure of other components by reporting incorrect timing and position.

My own 2009 Journey exhibited similar symptoms just yesterday. My code reader reported a bad coil and Cyl 2 misfire. Haven't tackled the repair yet, but it is very straightforward. As woth all issues, correct diagnosis begins with good information. Get a code reader, even if it is an el cheepo. In point of fact, you don't even NEED a code reader to pull the codes. All vehicles have a 'secret' series of button pushes that will cause the CE light to blink a pattern to indicate the code. Like 2 flashes - pause- 3 flashes - pause - 5 flashes -LONG pause then repeat sequence. This reads as code "235". And you can short 2 specific pins on the OBD connector to achieve the same result. But you cannot reset the codes this way. AND I recommend that you make sure whatever code reader you buy WILL send a 'CLEAR' command to the PCM to erase all current and pending codes. THis is a great diagnostic tool Reset it and see if it pops back.

Causes of 2018 Dodge Journey Check Engine Light

There are a number of reasons why the 2018 Dodge Journey check engine light may come on, but the most common are related to emissions or fuel efficiency.

The 2018 Dodge Journey check engine light can come on when there is an issue with one of the following:

Reset 2018 Dodge Journey check engine light, you can try the following steps for the process:

• Turn the key to “off” and make sure the engine isn’t running when you do this.
• After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait 30 seconds before proceeding.
• Reconnect the negative battery cable.
• Turn the engine on and let it idle until the temperature gauge registers a normal operating range.
• Turn the ignition off and start the vehicle again to see if the check engine light has reset.

If the check engine light does not reset after performing these steps, there may be a deeper issue with the vehicle that needs to be addressed. In this case, it’s a good idea to have the vehicle checked by a mechanic to determine the cause of the problem and get it repaired.

Bought this car in April 2010. Not even 30 days later check engine light comes on!! I call the dealer where I bought it never got an answer never got a call back!!! Finally I did get in toouch with someone from where I bought it and they said the check engine light may have needed to be reset, check the fuel cap, and dont pump the gas while the car was running because that could cause the engine light to come on! I would have just taken it back if I didntI live 4 hours away from where I bought it! Got all of the above checked out, check engine light still on! And to add to that the no fuse light came on!! This car is becoming very annoying!!!

If the computer doesn't throw any error codes the mechanics don't know what to do. Don't mechanics know how to find problems anymore???? They have to rely on the computer??? I'm sorry to all the good mechanics out there but I am really frustrated at this point. I am ready to drop my car off at the dealer and not pay chrysler another cent!!!!!!! Is anyone else having this issue?

Brought to dealer ,they checked it out ,3hours later. They said they needed to order a oxygen sensor harness and it wouldn't be in until July 17 th. I asked what was i supposed to do? they told me it was o.k. to drive until the part came in.

I have a 2k v6 camaro and my security light it on. I'm wondering if I can use hptuners to disable my vats?? what is the feature under system/general/security/ vats- PWM or Serial? thanks for the help in advance!!

The V8 vehicles have a 3rd option which is none. The V6 vehicles just have 2 options, serial & pwm. The vats is in the bcm on your car, so you can't delete the vats on your car with Hp Tuners like you can with the V8 vehicles. Maybe you can with a Tech II scan tool? Russ Kemp

Does the 2005 LS2 have VATS? I am programming an '05 LS2 ECM for a friend for a street rod and am mailing it to him and I need to know if I'm missing something, I can't find the VATS anywhere? Is it gone or what? Thanks! Mark

Answered my own question! (From GM Service Information!) The theft deterrent system has been incorporated into the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR). The theft deterrent is provided in order to prevent the vehicle operation if the correct key fob is not used in order to start the vehicle. The ignition button is pressed and the keyless entry antenna backup broadcasts a challenge to the key fob. If the challenge is met, the key fob will transmit via radio frequency (RF) to the RCDLR to enable the vehicle to start. This is accomplished by the RCDLR sending a fuel enable message to the engine control module (ECM). Mark

What caused the light to come on would be my first question, I know on my dad's '01SS he has one key that is somewhat loose inside the ignition switch and it would sometimes cause the chip to loose contact inside the switch and it would set the light.
