10 ways to improve call quality on your iphone, 8 ipados 18 features that will change the way you use your ipad, quick links, option 1: get an oem retrofit, option 2: replace your car's head unit, bluetooth is an option.

Apple CarPlay makes it easy to use iPhone apps like Google Maps or Spotify in your car's center console, saving you from mounting your smartphone on your windshield or dashboard. But what if your car doesn't support CarPlay?

CarPlay first appeared in 2014, and many auto manufacturers started offering iPhone connectivity around that time. Like most new features, this was an optional add-on for new cars. Many manufacturers have since made CarPlay a standard feature.

If your car was manufactured after 2014 but lacks the add-on package for CarPlay, you may be able to retrofit it using an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) upgrade. To find out for sure, contact a service center that specializes in servicing your particular brand of car.

Some manufacturers that have offered retrofits include Hyundai, Mazda, and Ford but not for all models.

The upgrade may only require a software patch to unlock CarPlay, or you may be offered the option of changing the hardware to enable the functionality. The cost of the upgrade will vary depending on what needs to be done, but you should be able to get a free quote to find out before committing.

If your car is older than 2014, your OEM doesn't offer an upgrade, or the cost of an OEM retrofit seems too much, you could also try replacing the head unit in your car. Many head units are now fully compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with additional features like compatibility with reversing cameras or object sensors often bundled in too.

The biggest hurdle you'll have to overcome is to find a head unit that's compatible with your particular make and model. Contacting a local car audio expert is the best way to find out what your options are, but it may also be the priciest.

Your options include high-end name brands like the MVH-AC251BT from Pioneer (around $450) or cheaper models like the BVCP9700A from BOSS  (around $250). If possible, head to a showroom and try a demo unit before you buy to ensure you're happy with the end result.

Pioneer MVH-AV251BT Digital Multimedia Video Receiver with 7" Hires Touch Panel Display, Apple CarPlay, Android AUT, Built-in Bluetooth, and SiriusXM-Ready (Does not Play CDs)

This Pioneer head unit is both Apple CarPlay and Android Audio ready, with built-in Bluetooth, SiriusXM compatibility, and a 7-inch high-resolution touch screen.

If you're willing to put in some research, you may find the second-hand market to be the most cost-effective option for adding CarPlay to an older vehicle. Use marketplaces like eBay and Facebook Marketplace, but remember to stay safe and avoid scams .

If your car already has Bluetooth connectivity, there's a good chance you can already use most smartphone functions wirelessly. This includes making and taking phone calls, getting turn-by-turn directions, and listening to music or podcasts.

CarPlay is a step-up though, providing a visual aid on top of existing audio integration. Once you have it, find out how you can customize the display .

Dodge Journey CarPlay Not Working: Causes + How to Fix

Do you need help getting Apple CarPlay to work in your Dodge Journey? You’re not alone. Many people have experienced an issue with CarPlay connections, which can be frustrating.  The good news is the fix is usually pretty simple.

Dodge Journey P0303

This article covers the most common reasons Apple CarPlay isn’t working in the Dodge Journey and tips on troubleshooting the most common connection issues. They are presented from likely and easy to check to the more obscure causes of CarPlay problems.

Before diving through this guide, try restarting your iPhone.  There’s a decent chance restarting your phone will take care of whatever issue is causing it not to connect to your vehicle.

1. Connection

When troubleshooting CarPlay, start by checking the connection to your Dodge Journey’s infotainment system.

There are two ways that your iPhone can connect to your Dodge Journey’s infotainment system: either via USB (wired) or Bluetooth (wireless connection). Which connection type your vehicle uses will depend on the model year and what entertainment options are equipped.

It is vital to ensure your phone is connected correctly before looking at any software-related issues.

If you use a lightning cable to plug your phone into CarPlay, keep reading.  If you don’t jump down a section to “Bluetooth.”

USB (Lightning Cable)

Check the USB port, Inspect the lightning cable.

Check the USB connection.  Ensure it’s plugged into the port Dodge has designated for CarPlay.  Usually, there’s only one port, and the rest are for charging a device.

Ensure the lightning cable is correctly inserted into your iPhone and Journey’s infotainment system.

If nothing happens when you plug the phone into the proper USB port, check the lightning cable.

iPhone Won't Connect to Dodge Journey

Verify that your phone’s Bluetooth is on and that airplane mode is not on.  H

  • Iphone with home button – If your iPhone has a home button, slide your thumb onto the screen from the home button.  It’ll bring up a quick menu.  You’re looking for the Bluetooth symbol.  It’ll be the color blue.  If it’s gray, turn it on by touching it and give your phone a second to connect to your Journey.
  • No home button – If your phone has no home button, slide your tray down from the top.  On the top right, swipe your thumb past the battery symbol, and the quick menu tray will drop.  Verify the Bluetooth symbol is blue.  If it’s not, turn it on.
  • Settings (works for all iPhones) – Open settings and look for the Bluetooth options.  It’ll say if it’s on right there in the main menu.  If it’s not, click “Bluetooth” and toggle it on. If you’ve set up CarPlay on your Journey before, it should automatically reconnect.

Once you’ve verified that Bluetooth is working on the iPhone, check if your Dodge Journey is on the list of possible devices that it can connect to:

Settings → Bluetooth

If you don’t see your Dodge Journey as a possible connection option, open your vehicle’s Bluetooth settings.  You should see your phone.  Tap it to connect.   If it doesn’t connect or you don’t see your phone as an option, turn your infotainment system’s Bluetooth off and on again.

After checking the connection, try connecting to a different iPhone.  If that iPhone works, you know there’s an issue with your iPhone.  “Forget” your vehicle and reconnect your iPhone.  Jump to section 5 for exactly how to do that.

2. Does Your Phone Support CarPlay? (It Almost Certainly Does)

dodge journey car play

CarPlay is just an extension of your iPhone on your Dodge Journey’s large infotainment screen. It simplifies the interface in order to reduce the amount of time you need to look at down from the road.  Outside of the connection, most of the other issues will be solved on the phone itself.

Any iPhone from the iPhone 5 (released in 2012) and later with the latest version of iOS will work with Apple CarPlay.

While iPhone has been supporting CarPlay for years, it’s always a good idea to upgrade to the latest version of iOS if you’re having connection issues.

3. Does Your Dodge Journey Support CarPlay?

Does the Dodge Journey come with CarPlay

If you’ve never used CarPlay in your Journey, you must confirm it’s an option.  A quick check in the owner’s manual will tell you.

Otherwise, you can use this guide from Apple to verify compatibility .

4. Is Carplay Enabled in Settings?

dodge journey car play

To verify that CarPlay is enabled on your iPhone, go to your settings and select “General,” then scroll down to “CarPlay”.   Check to make sure that Carplay is enabled, and if not, hit the toggle switch.

Settings → General → Carplay → Enable

Allow Carplay While Locked

A frequent cause of CarPlay not working is the “Allow CarPlay While Locked” toggle is turned off.  If it’s off, your iPhone will only connect to CarPlay if you unlock it.

To get around this issue, follow this path:

Settings → General → Carplay → My Cars → Tap Dodge Journey → Allow CarPlay While Locked

5. Have You Updated Your Dodge Journey’s Infotainment Software?

One of the most frequent CarPlay issues is when it stops working after updating the infotainment software.  When this happens, the fix is to set up airplay again.  Here’s how:

Settings → General → Carplay → My Cars → Dodge Journey → Tap Forget This Car

Once you’ve tapped forget this car, you need set CarPlay back up.  Reconnect to your Journey’s infotainment system.

Most of the time, the connection is why your CarPlay is not working in your Dodge Journey.  Start with troubleshooting it.  If that doesn’t work, restart your iPhone.  Next, have your iPhone “forget” your vehicle.  After that, you’ll have to set up a new one.

Does the Dodge Journey Have Apple CarPlay?

When the Dodge Journey hit the market, more than 10 years ago, families rejoiced. It offered a unique mesh of capability and felt as though it was one part SUV and one part minivan. Fast forward to 2020, and the Dodge Journey is back for another year of production.

But the crossover competition is steep, and Dodge hasn’t made any generational changes to the Journey. Some worry the Journey is showing its age, and you may be wondering if it at least keeps up with current connectivity technologies. So, does the new 2020 Dodge Journey have Apple CarPlay?

Since not much has changed, what’s under the hood?

For drivers who enjoy the curves of the road, the @Dodge Journey GT offers a high-performance suspension for a firmer ride. pic.twitter.com/aaMl1efBmv — Dodge Cares (@dodgecares) January 24, 2020

Don’t expect any remarkable enhancements under the hood. The Dodge Journey will only offer one engine, the 2.4L I4. The 172 horsepower engine is married to a four-speed automatic transmission. In today’s performance standards, you’ll find most powertrains feature six-speed automatic transmission or more.

The Journey’s power won’t knock your socks off. It won’t save you tons in gas money either. The EPA rates the 2020 Dodge Journey with a combined 21 mpg, which isn’t terribly impressive. You’ll also lose AWD options for the Journey in 2020.

What’s it like on the inside?

The Dodge Journey is one of the very few compact crossovers with third-row seating as standard. New this year, Dodge narrows the trim levels down to two – SE Value and Crossroad.

There are roomy cargo options, with plenty of fold-flat capabilities. With all seats in the upright positions, you’ll have a limited 10.7 cubic feet of space behind the third row. Folded to a flat position will provide 37 cubic feet. Fold the second row into the stowed position, and you’ll enjoy 67.6 cubic feet of storage area behind the front seats.

Dodge Journey technology and infotainment features

Considering the Dodge Journey is relatively unchanged for 10 straight years, you’re probably wondering if the tech and infotainment are up to par. The base model will provide you with a 4.3-inch touchscreen and entry-level audio extras.

Upgrades can add in SiriusXM radio, a CD player, auxiliary and USB ports. If you want the 8.4-inch screen, navigation, Uconnect (voice command), and Bluetooth connectivity, you can only enjoy those with Crossroad models. Adding in the extras is easier this year with Dodge bundling the options into a suite they call the Popular Equipment Group .

What about Apple CarPlay connectivity?

Even at the highest-level trim, neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto are part of the configurations. This may be a deal-breaker for many consumers.

Having the ability to make and receive both calls and texts, all hands-free and with voice command, is more than a luxury. It’s safe driving. Many competitors offer both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as base-level standard features these days. For anyone considering a Dodge Journey, you’ll have to pursue aftermarket install options or forgo the connectivity tech altogether.

Does the Dodge Journey have driver assistance features?

The short answer is yes. The 2020 Dodge Journey does offer a few driver aids. Every trim level configuration, including the base model, will come standard with a backup camera and parking sensors.

However, if you’re looking for adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, or lane-keeping assistance, you won’t find any of them available for the Journey.

It’s not all bad, and for many on a budget with several passengers to haul, the Dodge Journey is a perfect fit. It’s still, hands-down, the most affordable crossover out there with three rows. You’ll notice the price tag is thousands less than others in its segment.

The SE Value trim level starts at $24,990, and the well-equipped Crossroad is only $30,090. But remember, you will get what you pay for when you drive a Journey off the lot. You’ll forgo some of the fun tech and extras that almost every other SUV offers, including the Apple CarPlay connectivity .

Dodge Journey Apple CarPlay not working – causes and how to fix it

Apple CarPlay is a great way to stay connected while driving in your Dodge Journey. It allows you to access your favorite apps, view navigation maps, and listen to music without having to take your hands off the steering wheel. If Apple CarPlay does not launch when you connect your iPhone to your Journey, it could be due to a number of reasons which we will go through in this article.

Dodge Journey

1. Apple CarPlay is disabled

To use Apple CarPlay in your Dodge Journey, you must have iPhone 5 or newer device with iOS 7.1 or newer version, and the feature must be enabled in the settings menu.

How to enable Apple CarPlay on your iPhone

To enable Apple CarPlay on your iPhone, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps, and turn on the slider button next to CarPlay. Also enable “Siri & Dictation” if you want to use the ‘Hey Siri’ feature which allows you to control your phone and access other information through voice commands.

After enabling Siri & Dictation, go to your iPhone settings and tap Siri & Search. Make sure all three options (Listen for “Hey Siri”, Press Home for Siri, and Allow Siri when Locked) are enabled.

With Siri enabled, you can perform tasks like making phone calls, sending text messages, and playing music without having to manually navigate through menus on the infotainment system.

Allow CarPlay to launch while phone is locked

Apple CarPlay will not launch in Journey after plugging in the USB cable if your iPhone is locked and you haven’t allowed access in the settings. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, and select your vehicle name under MY CAR. Then turn on the slider button next to ‘Allow CarPlay While Locked’.

It is important to keep in mind that allowing Apple CarPlay to start while the phone is locked can pose a security risk, as it may allow unauthorized access to your phone’s data. So consider your preferences and security concerns before enabling this option.

Enable Accessories option

USB Restricted Mode is a security feature in iOS that is designed to protect user data by disabling the data connection over the Lightning port when the iPhone has been locked for more than an hour. The purpose of this feature is to prevent hackers from using specialized USB devices to gain access to the iPhone’s data. However, this feature can also cause issues with certain accessories, such as CarPlay, that rely on a stable USB connection. Removing this restriction may help resolve your Journey CarPlay issues.

Open your iPhone settings page and tap Touch ID & Passcode, scroll down and enable the slider button next to Accessories.

2. Bad Lightning to USB Cable

A good quality data cable is important for a stable and consistent connection between your phone and the infotainment system of your Journey. If the data cable that you’re using is of low quality, or if the cable is damaged, it can cause the connection to drop out or be lost entirely, making it difficult or impossible to use Apple CarPlay.

Slow data transfer

A low-quality cable may not be able to handle the data transfer required for Apple CarPlay. This can result in slow loading times or buffering when trying to use the app.

It is always recommended to use a high-quality, original Apple data cable to ensure a stable and consistent CarPlay connection.

No long cables

When using Apple CarPlay in Journey, it is generally recommended to keep the length of the the USB cable under 3 feet (1 meter) in length without using USB hubs or cable extensions in order to ensure proper functionality. Longer cables can cause signal degradation, leading to connectivity issues and a poor user experience.

3. Connected USB port not supported

Your Dodge Journey may have multiple USB ports, but not all of them support a data connection for CarPlay. This means that while you may be able to charge your phone using any USB port, not all of them will allow you to connect your phone to the infotainment system for the purpose of using Apple CarPlay. Try plugging in the USB cable to other USB ports or check the owners manual to identify which USB port supports data connection for CarPlay.

4. Software glitch

Restart your iphone.

Restarting your iPhone can often resolve minor software issues that may be causing problems with Apple CarPlay connectivity in Journey. Press and hold the side button and either volume button on your iPhone until the power off slider appears. Drag the slider to turn off your iPhone. Once your iPhone is turned off, press and hold the side button again until the Apple logo appears.

Reset the infotainment system

If you are experiencing issues with Apple CarPlay in your Journey, it could be due to a software glitch in the infotainment system. In this case, one potential solution is to reset the infotainment system to its default factory settings. This will restart the system and can help to clear up any bugs or errors that may be causing the problem. It’s important to note that resetting the infotainment system may erase some settings, so make sure to check the owners manual of your vehicle or consult with the dealer before proceeding with the reset.

Disable Bluetooth

Sometimes, an existing Bluetooth connection on your iPhone can prevent Apple CarPlay from working properly in Journey. When your phone is connected to the car via Bluetooth, it may not allow the USB data cable to establish a connection. To fix this issue, you can try turning off Bluetooth on your iPhone and then connect the USB data cable.

Delete Journey from your iPhone

If you are having trouble getting Apple CarPlay to work, one troubleshooting step you can try is deleting the existing connection profile of your Journey from your iPhone and then reconnecting the USB cable. This can help to clear any existing connection issues between the phone and the infotainment system. To do this, you will need to go into CarPlay settings under General settings on your iPhone and delete your Journey by tapping ‘Forget This Car’ under the vehicle submenu.

dodge journey car play

Once you have removed your Journey from your iPhone, you can reconnect the USB cable and set up the connection again. This can help fix any bugs or glitches that may have caused the initial connection issues and allow CarPlay to work properly.

5. Update the software

It’s important to check for any software updates available for both the iPhone and the infotainment system of your Dodge Journey. The issue might be caused by an outdated software version of the iPhone or the infotainment system, which may not be compatible with each other. Go to Software Update under General settings menu on your iPhone and check if an iOS update is available.

dodge journey car play

Keeping the software up to date ensures latest features and security patches for both the iPhone and the infotainment system. This may also help resolve any compatibility issues with Apple CarPlay and ensure a smooth experience while using the app.

6. Try other iPhone

If you are having trouble getting CarPlay to work in your Journey and you have tried all other troubleshooting steps, try using a different iPhone. This is because the issue might be caused by a compatibility problem between the phone and the infotainment system.

7. Apple CarPlay not supported

Your Dodge Journey or the aftermarket multimedia system (if equipped) may not be compatible with CarPlay. Visit the official website of Apple CarPlay and verify if your vehicle is supported. 2019 and later model year Dodge Journey vehicles are compatible with Apple CarPlay.

I've been digging around trying to get an answer to this but haven't had much luck.  I was hoping to upgrade my 2015 Dodge Journey, which currently has the 4.2" screen to the larger 8.4" screen.  Is it possible to get android auto or car play?  I've been digging around and it seems the 2015 doesn't support that and only the later models do.  Can anyone help provide some clarity for me and whether or not this is possible?  Thanks!

This has been covered multiple times in the forum.  Try searching the forum for radio upgrade, or 4.2 to 8.4 upgrade.  Not really hard, just $$$$$$$$$$$$

The posts I found were just the upgrade for the nav for the 8.4" but I haven't found regarding ones for android auto/car play.  Thanks.

I’m not sure  DJ are compatible with car play, but mine is an 09 so I wouldn’t know. Good luck!

Journeys don't do Car Play or Android Auto.  No matter what year.

So you would have to go aftermarket, then you lose some controls, like climate and Uconnect....

2020 Dodge Journey: Model overview, pricing, tech and specs

Don't stop believin': More than 10 years after it hit the market, the Journey carries into 2020 largely unchanged.

The Journey is only offered in two trims for the 2020 model year.

The 2020 Dodge Journey is the least-expensive three-row crossover available in the United States. Costing thousands less than its competition, the Journey offers serious value for budget-minded buyers. Unfortunately, that's about where the selling points end.

Dodge originally launched the Journey in 2008 for the 2009 model year, and more than a decade later, the crossover largely remains the same. A notable update in 2011 brought an improved interior layout and better material quality, but otherwise, the aging Journey is the same as it's ever been.

Powertrain and specs

At one time, the Journey was available with V6 power and optional all-wheel drive, but both of those are gone for 2020. Now, the only engine available is an anemic 2.4-liter I4, with 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. It's mated exclusively to a four-speed automatic transmission which, for a 2020 model year vehicle, is downright archaic.

Unfortunately, this low-powered engine doesn't result in any fuel economy benefits. The EPA rates the 2020 Journey at 19 miles per gallon city, 25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. For reference, a larger, three-row 2020 Honda Pilot offers a substantially more powerful V6 engine and returns 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined.

The Journey's cabin is best described as being functional above all. The base SE Value trim comes with cloth seats, while the Crossroad has leather. Every Journey comes standard with three rows of seats, which fold flat to offer generous cargo accommodations. The second row has a 40/60 split, while the third row seats use a 50/50 split.

With all of its seats up, the Journey offers just 10.7 cubic feet of space behind the third row. Fold those flat, and the cargo hold expands to 37.0 cubic feet. Finally, with both rows stowed, there's a useful 67.6 cubic feet of space behind the two front chairs.

Even the upgraded 8.4-inch multimedia system lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Journey's base multimedia system uses a 4.3-inch touchscreen headunit, with only basic audio features. An optional upgrade doesn't increase the screen size any but adds notable features like SiriusXM satellite radio and a CD player, in addition to the standard USB and aux port.

Crossroad models come with an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with Bluetooth connectivity. However, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not part of the equation. Embedded navigation is only available on the Crossroad trim.

As for driver-assistance features, well, there aren't many to discuss. Every Journey comes standard with parking sensors and a back-up camera, but that's about it. Adaptive cruise control? Lane-keeping assist? Blind-spot monitoring? Rear cross-traffic alert? None of those are available on the 2020 Dodge Journey.

2020 Dodge Journey

You can't get the Dodge Journey with all-wheel drive anymore.

Official pricing has yet to be announced as of this publish date, but we don't expect prices to change too much versus the 2019 Journey. That means the SE Value trim should come in around $25,000, with the Crossroad commanding around $32,000.

The SE Value can be had with a Blacktop package, which adds a gloss black grille and unique, 17-inch wheels. The Popular Equipment Group adds a six-way power driver's seat, Bluetooth, three-zone climate control and more.

The Crossroad's Popular Equipment Group nets you remote start, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and embedded navigation in the 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system. An additional rear entertainment system can be optioned on the Crossroad, which includes an overhead, 9-inch video screen and wireless headphones.

Availability

The 2020 Journey will arrive in Dodge dealers this fall.

What Cars Work With Apple Car Keys?

Car Keys is a feature that lets you add keys from a compatible vehicle to your Apple Wallet , then unlock, lock, and start the vehicle with your iPhone or Apple Watch . This isn’t a ubiquitous CarPlay feature because it relies on near-field communication (NFC) technology that most cars don’t have. Some NFC-enabled vehicles with CarPlay support it, but it’s a much shorter list.

Here are the cars that work with Apple CarPlay and Car Keys:

  • 2021 - 2023 1 Series
  • 2021 - 2023 2 Series
  • 2021 - 2023 3 Series
  • 2021 - 2023 4 Series
  • 2021 - 2023 5 Series
  • 2021 - 2023 6 Series
  • 2021 - 2023 8 Series
  • 2021 - 2023 X5
  • 2021 - 2023 X6
  • 2021 - 2023 X7
  • 2021 - 2023 Z4
  • 2023 Palisade

Can You Add CarPlay to a Vehicle That Doesn’t Have It?

You can add CarPlay to a car without it, but the options are limited. The only ways to add CarPlay are through a firmware update or replacing the head unit. Firmware updates that add CarPlay functionality are rare, though, and replacing the head unit , which is also sometimes referred to as the stereo, receiver or radio, isn’t always possible.

Suppose your vehicle has a touchscreen infotainment system , and the manufacturer added CarPlay functionality after you purchased the car. In that case, you may be able to get CarPlay through a firmware update or an upgrade kit. In that case, you need to contact your local dealer to see if such a thing is possible and to inquire about the associated costs. This is a rare occurrence, so don’t be surprised if you look into it and find it isn’t an option.

The other way to add CarPlay is to find a replacement head unit with the necessary functionality. If your car has a standard single DIN or double DIN head unit, you should be able to purchase an aftermarket CarPlay head unit and either install it yourself or pay for professional installation. This process sometimes requires a specific dash kit to fit the replacement head unit.

Replacing the head unit isn’t possible in many newer vehicles with highly integrated infotainment systems. For example, if your vehicle’s climate controls are operated via a touchscreen in the dash, you’re likely to find that replacing the head unit isn’t a viable option. In that case, the best way to get CarPlay is to buy a vehicle that already has it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CarPlay subscription based?

No, if your car comes with it and you have a compatible iPhone, you won't have to pay any additional money to use CarPlay.

If I have an Android phone, can I use CarPlay?

No. Android Auto only works with Android-based phones, and CarPlay only works with iPhones. When manufacturers add CarPlay, they usually add Android Auto, so it might not even matter that Androids can't use CarPlay.

Is CarPlay better than Android Auto?

Overall, no. Does one have a better feature or two than the other? Maybe! The functionality is pretty similar, leaving the rest up to preference. We recommend comparing Android Auto and CarPlay to see which has more features you need.
