Clos Normand

84 Rue Claude Monet, Giverny, France

Art aficionados and anyone who loves a garden will enjoy Clos Normand, one of the gardens at Monet’s house and garden site in Giverny. Visitors can stroll through the colorful enclosed gardens that inspired some of the influential French impressionist artist's most famous paintings and tour his house, which the Clos Normand surrounds.

Monet’s Garden in Giverny comprises two gardens: Clos Normand, in front of the Maison de Claude Monet, and the Japanese-inspired Water Garden across the road. The 2.4-acre (1-hectare) garden contains rare and common flowers, fruit and ornamental trees, climbing roses, and more. Tickets to the gardens are combined, and there’s an underground passage between the two.

Many guided full- or half-day tours from Paris take visitors to Giverny. These also sometimes include the Palace of Versailles or continue to Rouen or the Normandy Coast. Tickets to Monet’s Garden often sell out in the peak season, so going with a tour is convenient. You can also visit Giverny independently on a day trip from Paris or overnight, as there are plenty of places to stay.

Picnics aren’t allowed in the gardens, so enjoy snacks before or after your visit.

To protect the plants and vegetation, visitors are not allowed in all parts of the gardens; they must stick to the designated paths.

You’ll need a ticket to enter the garden. Under-7s are free.

Clos Normand is in Giverny, 46 miles (75 kilometers) northwest of Paris. Many travelers visit on guided tours from Paris, but independent travelers can get there by train or car. Vernon-Giverny station is on the Paris Saint-Lazare–Rouen railway line; the journey takes between 45 and 90 minutes. Monet’s Garden is about 3.5 miles (6 kilometers) from the station. Taxis and buses run from the station, and rental bicycles are also available. Self-driving travelers will find free, unsupervised parking at Giverny.

Monet’s Garden is open from early April through early November. It's a popular attraction, so if you’re traveling independently, book tickets in advance, especially in summer. Entry is timed, so arrive at the correct time. In season, the gardens are open daily from mid-morning until early evening, including on public holidays.

Giverny’s Museum of Impressionism (Musée des Impressionnismes) is a separate attraction northwest of Clos Normand, providing more interesting artistic and historical context. Monet’s work sits alongside that of other impressionist and modern artists, and the modernist building, which blends into the landscape, and the large gardens are also impressive.
