2023 Ford Excursion: Ford hasn’t built a Super Duty Excursion SUV in years. But that hasn’t stopped many from wishing that were still the case. That’s why MegaRexx Trucks turned the F-250 into the new Excursion. And if you like it, you can buy one of these giant seven-seater SUVs.

One would expect an over-the-top truck from MegaRexx of Castle Hayne, NC. He calls this extra-large three-row SUV “MegaRexx SVN.” We featured other company trucks, such as the MegaRaptor and MegaBronc trucks. When it comes to a Ford pickup in a bed, it’s usually a MegaRexx creation.

First, MegaRexx made a long roof out of aluminum. Later, it turned out that the F-250 bank had become part of the cockpit. Easier said than done, we know. It blends in with other F-250s and is not just a fiberglass cover.

The long strip of stained glass windows in a spectacular presentation does not go unnoticed. Inside, the darkness continues with the Lariat Ultimate fully covered in leather. This and much more give the interior a very luxurious look. The first and second-row seats are equipped with individual power seats.

The rear seats use the third-row seats from the Ford Expedition. These are upholstered like the front and center row bucket seats. And third-row passengers get their own Vintage Air climate control system. With Lariat Ultimate trim, the front seats are heated and ventilated. The package includes a Ford Sync 4 infotainment system and a 10-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system.

The all-new 2023 Ford Excursion is the subject of much speculation lately. This is the largest SUV ever produced and will be returning shortly. This F-250-based SUV was last produced in 2005, and now Ford can bring the iconic model back to life. According to many reports, this model will be launched once again at some point in 2020.

Tours will get a redesign, a new engine, and new architecture. The SUV segment proliferates, and the Excursion will become an instant hit. Both diesel and petrol engines will be offered. In addition, the Blue Oval will introduce several trim levels and the possibility of a high-performance variant.

The upcoming 2023 Ford Excursion will be the largest SUV in its segment. Previously, the Excursion was 226 inches long. For comparison, the Expedition MAX is 222 inches long.

Its sheer size, as it was hypothetically built on top of the Super Duty, as the original was at the time, would have provided a spacious interior with lots of leg and headroom and a vast cargo area. The 4×4’s ample storage space has been further enhanced in this regard, as it features a roof rack for hauling additional gear, complete with a set of LED lights above the windscreen.

The steel bumpers at either end, finished in the same blue as the rest of the exterior, are another highlight of this digital assembly, which also has plenty of ground clearance thanks to the new suspension. The wheels are wrapped in fat tires that are supposed to improve traction in sticky and slippery conditions, and an additional light bar is mounted on the front bumper.

As for that impressive face, it comes straight from Super Duty, albeit with a few tweaks. The unofficial interpretation of the modern Excursions had large side mirrors and no side steps, making getting in and out tricky.

New Excursions Hardly anything fits into a crowd more quickly than the usual Ford Excursions 2023 platform or E-350 Super Duty van-Becker. Still, nothing goes out of the ordinary with the interior.

The typical layout of the convertible SUV calls for eliminating the second and third-row seats, replaced by two large seats and up to three rear-facing jump seats, all upholstered in high-grade leather.

Beautifully finished wood trim accents the cabin. The large flat-screen monitor doubles as a divider that can be raised, lowered, and connected to entertainment systems and computers. The satellite link, wireless keyboard, phone, and foldable desk allow for full connectivity during travel.

The SUV’s ride quality is much better than we hoped for, thanks to exclusive suspension modifications, and there’s no way we’ll flinch. Wake up from a nap. Vans – generally Ford or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter – offer a more significant size of space and versatility – individual chairs or sofas, for example. And because they are more fashionable than SUVs, vans can also achieve a lower profile.

On the outside, the MegaRexx SVN Super Duty has a modest two ½-inch lift and a leveling system built by Carli Suspension. The 20-inch Fuel Militia wheels support the 35-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler off-road ring. Tubular side steps are used because of the tires; that lift is part of the package.

MegaRexx ID badges are everywhere. Both the front and rear fenders have them, along with C-pillar badging. Also etched into the tailgate is “MegaRexx.” The only identification appears on the dash, as you’d expect from a high-end custom SUV.

Ford Expedition vs. Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevy Tahoe and its twin, the GMC Yukon, are the Expedition's closest competitors. GM followed Ford's lead when it redesigned the Tahoe with a rear independent suspension. As a result, its third-row seat is more spacious than before, though the Expedition's rearmost seats are slightly roomier. You get more engine choices with the Chevy, however, and the Tahoe's V8 returned better real-world fuel economy than the Expedition's turbo V6 in our tests.

Ford Expedition vs. Jeep Wagoneer

The Jeep Wagoneer is the brand's long-awaited three-row SUV. It's based on the same underpinnings as the Ram 1500 and is generally more luxury-focused than other body-on-frame SUVs in the class. As a result, it's more comfortable and has a more refined interior than the Expedition, but it also has a higher starting price.

The Ford Expedition is the biggest and baddest vehicle in Ford's arsenal. This large three-row SUV is based on the Ford F-150, meaning it uses body-on-frame construction — the default choice for SUVs before the car-based crossover became ubiquitous. The Expedition's pickup truck underpinnings give it the strength to tow heavier equipment than the Ford Explorer crossover, yet its ride doesn't suffer as a result. This generation of Expedition dates back to 2018, and from its inception, Ford has done a great job balancing the need for a tough, capable SUV with the ride comfort buyers expect of a modern vehicle.

We don't expect the 2023 Ford Expedition to be significantly different from last year's model. That's because the 2022 Expedition introduced a slew of new changes, including a larger touchscreen, the addition of the BlueCruise hands-free driving system and the new Timberline trim, driven by a slightly less powerful version of the engine from the F-150 Raptor. If Ford does tweak the 2023 Expedition, it will likely be in the form of minor shuffling to standard or optional equipment. Buyers in the market for a family-friendly SUV now can check out the 2022 model.

2023 Ford Excursion Comeback: More Than Rumor

Today’s market is full of SUVs with pretty impressive dimensions but back in the day, there were even bigger models. This primarily refers to Ford Excursion, which was in production between 1999 and 2005. It is one of the biggest SUVs ever made, based on the F-250 Super Duty pickup . These days, we are getting reports about the possible comeback of the nameplate. Allegedly, the blue oval company is already working on the new model, which could come as the 2023 Ford Excursion.

At this point, the revived Excursion is just a rumor. The officials are still quiet, so it’s hard to talk about details. On the other hand, we may presume some base design solutions and features. More precisely, we expect to see the same design approach as in the case of the original model, though everything will be adapted to the modern era of the automotive industry

The comeback of this large SUV has been rumored and if we can trust rumors, the all-new 2023 Ford Excursion could arrive already in the next year. At this point, we don’t know anything about design and features, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make some predictions, especially in terms of base design characteristics.

This particularly refers to the base design approach, which would be the same as in the case of the original model. We would see a design that’s based on Ford’s Super Duty pickup, the F-250. The two models would share most of the parts, though we presume that the new SUV would come with slight revisions regarding suspension setup and similar things.

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind about the exterior is its gigantic size. If you remember the original model, you know it was the biggest SUV on the market, with more than 137 inches in wheelbase. Meanwhile, the competition got bigger as well, so models like GMC Yukon XL now feature 134 inches in wheelbase. Therefore, we may expect the 2023 Ford Excursion to be even bigger. Some sources suggest that the new model could feature more than 140 inches between the axles.

In terms of styling, we don’t expect bigger surprises. The 2023 Ford Excursion would come with a familiar design approach, especially in terms of the front end. Of course, we are talking about the same front face as on the F-250, with the same grille, headlights etc. The rest of the body would come in a typical wagon manner, long and extremely spacious.

Without any doubt, the first thing that comes to mind about interior design is the amount of space. With the expected dimensions, there is no doubt that the 2023 Ford Excursion would feature tremendous amounts of space. We would see three extremely spacious rows of seats, where even the third row would feature more than 40 inches in legroom. As result, the new model would be able to accommodate eight adult passengers with ease. The cargo area would also bring tons of space, as the overall volume would probably go way over 150 cubic feet.

On the other hand, the dashboard design would feature the same shape as the one found in the F-250. Still, we might see minor upgrades for this occasion, in the form of nicer materials and new tech features. Speaking of the tech features, we presume that the new SUV would come standard with the company’s new, vertically-oriented screen.

It’s relatively easy to predict what would happen under the hood of the 2023 Ford Excursion. We presume that the engine lineup would be the same as in the pickup sibling, which indicates three powertrain options on the offer. Base models would come with a 6.2-liter V8, which puts out around 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The upgrade would come in the form of a 7.3-liter Godzilla V8 engine, which comes with a max output of 430 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

Finally, we also expect to see a diesel version of the SUV. That model would come with the monstrous 6.7-liter turbodiesel, which puts out around 475 horsepower and 1.050 pound-feet of torque.

All three engines would come coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

I Own a 2008 F350 and I love it. The wife and I both our looking to purchase a new family vehicle in 2023. We would love to see the new excursion that will be our first choice.

With the changing market toward the woke EV market, please don’t ignore the Thousands of normal American truck customers that would line up to buy an excursion. I sold my 2003 7.3L Excursion when it didn’t fit in the garage in my new house. I have had 17 years of sale remorse and while I owned one of the 6 L disaster engines, I would buy a 2023 Excursion without hesitation. 113K miles on my RAM 3500 and this one would just take the place of the worthless diesel grand Cherokee I am stuck with.

I had a 2000 Excursion with the V10 and it was the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. It was great in the snow,rain or just about anything I put it through. I kept it up to par. I just lost it on New Year’s morning to a drunk driver. She totalled the whole rear end. When the New Excursion comes out I plan on buying one and hopefully it upholds to the older models. They are beautiful and very dependable and stout. Love them

Hell No! I’ll take my 2000 v10 over that any day! This new version is bound to be more plastic and have more emissions crap on it! Not to mention the price tag! If the new Expeditions are $60k+ then how much is this thing going to cost?

Ford hasn’t made a Super Duty Excursion SUV for years. But that hasn’t stopped enthusiasts from wishing it still did. That was the basis behind MegaRexx Trucks’ converting an F-250 into a new Excursion. And if you like it, you can buy one of these hulking seven-passenger SUVs .

Over-the-top trucks are a MegaRexx specialty. The Castle Hayne, North Carolina-based outfit calls this three-row extra-large SUV the “MegaRexx SVN.” We’ve covered the company’s other creations, including the MegaRaptor and MegaBronc . When it comes to Ford trucks on bath salts, MegaRexx delivers.

First, the company fashions a long roof from aluminum. Then it turns the F-250 bed into a part of the cabin. Easier said than done, we know. It’s integrated with the rest of the F-250 , not just a fiberglass bed cap.

The long expanse of tinted windows in the murdered-out presentation goes almost unnoticed.

Inside, the blackness continues with leather-trimmed Lariat Ultimate everything. That and more give the cabin an upscale appearance.

The front and second-row seating feature power bucket seats. And the rear uses a Ford Expedition third row, trimmed like the front and middle-row bucket seats. Additionally, the third-row passengers get a Vintage Air climate-controlled system. And with the Lariat Ultimate trim, the front seats come heated and ventilated.

Also, expect the Ford Sync 4 infotainment system and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system as part of the package. 

This 7-seat Excursion conversion has other unique touches

Outside, the MegaRexx SVN Super Duty receives a modest 2.5-inch lift, along with a Carli Suspension leveling system. The 20-inch rims are Fuel Militia wheels, supporting 35-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler off-road hoops. Thanks to those tires and lift, tubular side steps are also part of the package.

In addition, you’ll find plenty of MegaRexx ID badging on the exterior. The front and rear fenders get badges, as do the C-pillars. Also, the company name is emblazoned on the tailgate. Inside, the only identification appears on the dash, expected for a high-end custom SUV . 

How much does a MegaRexx SVN Ford F-250 ‘Excursion’ cost?

The starting price is $179,950. At first, that’s enough to make you think twice. But this vehicle is truly unique, yet it can haul family, friends, toys, and more with ease. And it’s big. If you want big, the MegaRexx SVN is it.

The 2023 Ford Expedition starts at $54,755, which is about average for the class. The base XL SXT model has two rows and seats five people. The midlevel XLT and Limited trims start $59,790 and $68,660, respectively, and feature seating for up to eight with a power-folding and reclining third row. The off-road-oriented Timberline costs $72,000, while the King Ranch ($78,715) gains niceties like a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster, a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo and a surround-view camera system. The range-topping Expedition Platinum starts at $82,815 and adds BlueCruise highway driving assist, adaptive suspension damping and massaging front seats.

Which Is the Best Ford Expedition Model to Buy?

We recommend the XLT trim. You gain a third row with seating for up to eight and access to options that you can't get in the base trim, including synthetic leather upholstery, second-row captain's chairs, wireless device charging, a power liftgate, a panoramic roof and a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system.

The Chevrolet Tahoe joins the Expedition as a solid pick among large SUVs . This Chevy can seat up to nine people, its infotainment system is high-tech and intuitive, and an optional diesel engine contributes to near best-in-class fuel economy. However, the Tahoe's interior quality is more of a mixed bag than the Expedition's, and it can't tow as much. 

The Tahoe is only offered in a short-wheelbase body style that has more cargo space than the standard-length Expedition. The Chevy Suburban is essentially a long-wheelbase Tahoe, and it, too, is more cavernous than the Expedition Max.

Ford Expedition vs. GMC Yukon

The GMC Yukon sports a luxury-like interior, which is the main reason to consider it over its competition, including the Expedition. Additionally, both body-length versions of the Yukon have more cargo space than the Expedition and Expedition Max. The Ford has comfier seating and a more refined powertrain, going up against the GMC's somewhat sluggish transmission. All told, both are decent choices.

The 2023 Ford Expedition has a blocky truck-based design, but it looks and feels upscale inside. Plentiful high-quality materials outshine the few low-rent plastics. 

2023 Expedition Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation

This SUV's standard infotainment system has sharp on-screen graphics, and it's easy to filter through the menus. There are also plenty of physical buttons and knobs lower on the center stack. 

An optional larger touch screen is even more visually impressive. Shared with the high-tech Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lighting , this vertically oriented tablet incorporates common functions like climate adjustments into the screen, though it can take some practice to learn where everything is. 

  • Standard infotainment features: a 12-inch touch screen, a Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a six-speaker stereo, four USB ports and voice recognition

2023 Expedition Cargo Space

The regular-length Expedition has an average amount of cargo space among standard-wheelbase large SUVs . You get up to 20.9 cubic feet of space behind the third row, up to 63.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 104.6 cubes with all the rear seats folded down.

The Expedition Max is subpar for cargo space compared to other extended SUVs in the class. That model has up to 36 cubic feet of room behind the third row, up to 79.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 121.5 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded.

How Many People Does the 2023 Expedition Seat?

The Expedition seats up to eight people. The base trim only has two rows and seats five, but all other models have three rows. In those, you have a three-seat third row and a choice of a second-row bench seat or captain's chairs. 

The front seats are day-long comfortable, and there's enough room for taller adults in all the rear seats.

There are up to five complete sets of LATCH connectors for the Expedition's second- and third-row seats. All of the attachment points are easy to locate and use, and most types of child car seats fit in the second row.

Expedition Performance: You'll be Ready for an … Expedition

Every 2023 Ford Expedition is outfitted with a twin-turbocharged V6 engine that puts out 380, 400 or 440 horsepower. All versions are extremely capable. Even when loaded down with people and cargo, the Expedition takes off quickly from a stop and gets up to cruising speeds effortlessly. The standard 10-speed automatic transmission complements the engine with smooth and timely shifts. 

2023 Expedition Gas Mileage

The Expedition gets good fuel economy for the large SUV segment . Estimates range from about 16 to 17 mpg in the city to around 19 to 23 mpg on the highway. 

Expedition Ride and Handling

This Ford generally drives with composure on the road. Steering feels light enough that it's easy to pilot yourself through tight spaces, but this SUV’s heft causes some body roll around turns. The ride quality remains comfortable, and the top Platinum trim with its adaptive damping suspension is even more luxurious. 

2023 Expedition Off-Road Performance

With about 10 inches of ground clearance, the Expedition can tackle dirt, gravel paths and other light off-roading. Opt for a model with four-wheel drive, and you'll get hill descent control and selectable terrain modes. 

The Expedition Timberline is the off-road-oriented model in the lineup. It comes standard with four-wheel drive, a front skid plate, 32-inch all-terrain tires, an electronic limited-slip differential, a two-speed transfer case and off-road shocks and suspension tuning that give it roughly an extra inch of ground clearance.

When properly equipped, the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds. That amount is great for a large SUV. All Expedition models can tow at least 6,000 pounds.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2023 Ford Expedition an overall safety rating of five out of five stars, with five stars in the frontal and side crash tests. Rear-wheel-drive models received three stars in the rollover test, while four-wheel-drive models earned four stars.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not crash tested the 2023 Expedition.

The 2023 Ford Expedition comes in six trims: XL STX, XLT, Limited, Timberline, King Ranch and Platinum. All models come with a twin-turbocharged V6 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard in every trim, and four-wheel drive is optional for $3,050, except in the 4WD-only Timberline. Additionally, you can upgrade any trim except the base model and Timberline to the larger Max body style for $2,000. 

Ford Expedition XL STX

The entry-level XL STX starts at $55,725. Standard features include cloth upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a four-way manually adjustable passenger seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 12-inch touch-screen infotainment system, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a six-speaker stereo, four USB ports, a universal garage door opener, tri-zone automatic climate control, LED headlights and voice recognition. 

Also standard are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, MyKey, rear parking sensors and a rearview camera.

Ford Expedition XLT

With a base price of $59,790, the XLT bumps seating to eight with a power-folding and reclining third row. It also adds satellite radio and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

An optional package for $3,795 adds synthetic leather upholstery, second-row captain's chairs, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, an eight-way power-adjustable passenger seat, a heated steering wheel, proximity keyless entry, a power liftgate and wireless device charging.

Also optional are a power-folding second-row bench seat, a panoramic roof, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system and navigation.

Ford Expedition Limited

The Limited retails for $68,660. Its lengthy list of additional equipment includes a panoramic roof, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, navigation, wireless device charging, a household-style power outlet, ambient interior lighting and traffic-sign recognition.

The Limited also comes standard with power-folding and heated second-row captain's chairs, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat with memory settings, an eight-way power-adjustable passenger seat, two third-row USB ports, power-adjustable pedals, a heated steering wheel, proximity keyless entry, remote start, front parking sensors and rain-sensing windshield wipers. 

This trim is available with a handful of packages that add features such as power side running boards, a sport-tuned suspension, a surround-view parking camera system and sporty exterior styling. A 15.5-inch touch screen is also optional.

Ford Expedition Timberline

The off-road-ready Timberline starts at $72,000. Its amenities include standard four-wheel drive, off-road-tuned shocks and suspension, increased ground clearance, a front skid plate, 32-inch all-terrain tires, an electronic limited-slip differential, a two-speed transfer case, unique interior and exterior styling and exterior surround lighting.

Ford Expedition King Ranch 

The $78,715 King Ranch features unique leather upholstery, a 15.5-inch touch screen, a 12.4-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, HD Radio, a surround-view parking camera system and pedestrian detection.

Ford Expedition Platinum

With a base price of $82,815, the Platinum trim adds BlueCruise highway driving assist, adaptive suspension damping and massaging front seats.

2023 Ford Expedition Timberline Review: The Do-It-All Daily That Does Even Better Off-Road

If you’ve ever been to a ski resort in the U.S., there’s a good chance you passed, parked next to, or got cut off by a Chevy Suburban or something similar. These snow-filled gravel lots are littered with three-row SUVs transporting families up mountain roads. The massive people haulers all follow the same tried and true formula: Take a big SUV, and then make it a bit bigger—just in case. This rings true for the 2023 Ford Expedition Timberline, but in my time with it, I found it to be more than just a status symbol. It’s a wheeler.

Like many other automakers are doing, Ford developed the Expedition Timberline to be the adventure-ready option for people with more money and more seats at their dinner table. Some of these examples are just the same car with a slight lift and some cladding, but the Timberline takes it a bit more seriously. For my recent bro-trip to Breckenridge, Colorado, I enlisted the help of one to see if it can perform as well on the trail as it does in the ski resort parking lot.

The Expedition is Ford’s biggest SUV—well, technically the Expedition Max is, but they’re in the same family. It slides neatly above the Ford Explorer in terms of space and size, while offering towing capacity closer to its pickup truck brother: the Ford F-150. The “normal” Expedition and Expedition Max come in many different trims but the Timberline—our focus in this review—is far more outdoorsy than any XLT you would find at a rental desk. 

On the outside, Ford has taken a number of steps to separate the Timberline from the rest of the Expedition lineup. Available in a range of earthy tones, it sits noticeably higher than a standard Expedition thanks to off-road shocks and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler all terrain tires. The bumper is also beefed up with orange tow hooks and orange trim. Paired with a sizable skid plate and blacked-out trim pieces, Ford has done a solid job at setting the Timberline apart from the rest of the pack.

Moving inside, the rugged theme continues. Orange stitching lines the seats, while aluminum and orange accenting run across the dash. Some may be turned off by such a bright accent color, but it works well and isn’t overbearing to the overall wilderness theme. Beyond that, there aren’t many things on the inside that separate the Timberline from another upper-trim Expedition. This particular vehicle is optioned with a $9,000 equipment package, the only major option on the Timberline. It features a number of items worth spending your money on including an astonishingly large panoramic sunroof, heated second-row seats, and Ford’s signature iPad—er, 15-inch infotainment screen.

The Timberline trim only comes with one engine option: Ford’s high output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 making a healthy 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. Shifting gears is incredibly smooth thanks to the 10-speed transmission that’s mated to a two-speed transfer case with a button-operated locking rear differential. This same engine and transmission combination is used in the EcoBoost F-150 and provides more than enough power to get the Timberline up to speed, even while weighted down with eight dudes inside—ask me how I know.

Driving the Ford Expedition Timberline

On the road, the Timberline is noticeably gigantic. From someone who owns a lowered Mazda Miata , this was quite an adjustment. As I was still wrapping my head around the sheer size of this lifted beast, I began to navigate the city streets of Denver. At first I was nervous about blind spots in a vehicle this size, but surprisingly I only found one: a minor spot down the driver side that was easily solved via blind-spot monitoring. As I ran errands my first morning with the Timberline, the behemoth became more manageable. Its turning circle was impressively tight for such a big thing, and radar cruise control kept me comfortable in Denver rush hour traffic. It made sure I kept a safe distance—and more importantly—centered in the lane.

As my group began the drive up to Breckenridge, I set my sights on the notorious Loveland Pass via I-70. Going up in elevation, it became clear that while the 10-speed transmission is better for fuel economy, there is a significant delay between putting your foot down and the transmission actually kicking down to a usable gear. While I wouldn’t mind on a flat road, I found myself having to constantly give it the beans in order for the transmission to find the right gear on a climb. Once the transmission responded, the EcoBoost V6 had an impressive amount of power to get me, a bunch of guys, and all our snowboards up and over the 11,000-foot mountain pass. 

The off-road suspension of the Timberline handled the twists and turns of the mountain highway equitably. Even loaded down, it didn’t lean too much or feel as though it was too soft for its own good. As I passed a couple lifted Jeeps with their off-road tires whining away against the asphalt, I was impressed at how quiet and refined the Timberline is inside, despite its ruggedness and Goodyear all-terrains.

Once in the mountains, we navigated to our Airbnb that sat atop a dirt road at 10,500 feet—almost 1,500 feet above Breckenridge. On one of the mornings there, I woke up to a surprise 8 inches of fresh snow. I departed the driveway in snow mode, and the Expedition handled the conditions so well that I barely noticed the powder. The tires seem to have really made the difference here. Even though the Timberline has the technology and clearance to bust through the snow, other AWD vehicles struggled to drive up the dirt road that day with all-seasons or standard snow tires.

In addition to snow driving, I was able to take the Expedition Timberline on the Switzerland Trail —a modestly technical route located in the hills outside of Boulder, Colorado. While the Timberline took up most of the rock-covered single track, it handled the bumps, steep climbs, and rocky trail with ease. At this point my testing had gone quite far past anything a typical family would endure, so I quickly returned to the glory of the ski resort parking lot.

Highs and Lows

If you’re looking for an SUV with a seemingly endless amount of space, then the Ford Expedition Timberline is a strong contender. I have never driven a rig that can fit so many people or bags so comfortably while also traversing most anything in its path. Almost all of the seats independently adjust and fold, making storage in the Timberline endlessly configurable. Every time I got in the car I was putting seats up and down to accommodate humans, suitcases, snowboards, or a little of everything. It works great.

Drawbacks specific to the Expedition were few and far between. After multiple generations making the rig, they’ve got the recipe down. Most of my gripes came in the form of industry trends, such as its gear selector. Like other companies, Ford fitted the new Expedition with a circular knob paired with a button-actuated manual gear selector next to it. When I tried to engage a lower gear to descend down steep roads, I found myself having to continuously take my eyes off the road in order to first find the shifter, select “M”, and then move my hand back to a less-than-ergonomic position in order to finally select a lower gear. For an SUV that is supposed to ease the gap between off road, on road, and towing, this does not work well. It’d be safer and easier to operate if it had a traditional gear lever like the F-150, or at least provide steering wheel paddles.

Ford Expedition Timberline Features, Options, and Competition

The base Timberline falls right in the middle of the Expedition trim offerings you’ll find from Ford, though with options, it costs nearly the same as a Platinum. While some of the core features are the same, Ford has done an excellent job leveling up this trim package. The Timberline comes fitted with a heavy duty skid plate, off road shocks and suspension, a 0.8-inch suspension lift, all terrain tires, and an all terrain management system. Additionally, my particular vehicle was outfitted with the pricey but worth it equipment package mentioned previously. This includes the massive 15.5-inch touchscreen infotainment, Ford’s impressive adaptive cruise control, a rockin’ 12 speaker sound system by Bang & Olufsen, and a digital gauge cluster with fancy graphics and useful displays.

While there’s a whole host of competitors in the three-row SUV space, when it comes to off-road ready versions, there are two major rivals for the Timberline: the Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro and the Chevy Tahoe Z71. The Sequoia takes the hardcore approach with Fox shocks, a coil-sprung rear axle, and tech features like Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select. It’s essentially a stand-in for the legendary Land Cruiser since we no longer get that in the States. The Tahoe Z71 takes a more conservative approach with alterations to the front bumper, all terrain tires, and a more mild set of off road shocks. In my view, the changes on the Expedition Timberline go farther to give you something that looks and feels more special than the Chevy Tahoe Z71, but it falls just short of the Sequoia TRD Pro in terms of off-road attitude.

There aren’t a ton of optional extras on the Timberline trim apart from complete option groups. If I were to spec it myself, I would go with my tester’s 501A Equipment Package and Ford Co-Pilot360 options, but swap out colors for the gorgeous Forged Green Metallic.

Fuel Economy

Let’s face it, the Expedition Timberline is not meant to be economical. I’m a big believer in the EcoBoost V6 because they perform well—even when towing. But when it comes to moving a 5,600-pound vehicle, there’s only so much you can do. Nevertheless, the Expedition sits right in the middle of the pack in terms of EPA estimated fuel economy.

In my time with this tank I averaged 15.6 mpg, which I found pretty impressive given that I was constantly driving up and down mountain roads. Given normal city driving conditions, I expect this number will go up.

Value and Verdict

For $83,805 fully loaded and delivered, there are plenty of options out there and the Expedition Timberline is an honorable choice. In all reality, buyers care more about driver assistance and interior features, as opposed to one-pedal trail driving and wheel articulation. However, like many vehicles, it’s nice to know that it could do it… if it needed to. The Timberline completes these tasks with ease.

The Ford Expedition Timberline is cool, even if it doesn’t offer anything drastically better than the off-road ready competition. Buying the Expedition Timberline is a choice you won’t regret. It’s sharp, capable, and dependable. But it’s worth cross-shopping the competition. If I were in the market, it’d be a tough choice between this and that Sequoia TRD Pro.

The changes to the refreshed 2024 Ford F-150 may seem mild on the outside, but they add up to significant improvements across the lineup. A new tailgate design with a swinging mid-door highlights the most obvious change, and it works great while towing, which sets it apart from GM’s otherwise superior 6-way power tailgate. A larger standard touchscreen showcases the interior updates, but the F-150 Hybrid improves as well.

2024 Ford F-150: What’s new?

Every 2024 Ford F-150 now comes with a 12.0-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.0-inch touchscreen. Fortunately, Ford still employs large dials for volume, tuning, climate control, drive modes, and the excellent towing assistant dial for Ford’s Pro Trailer Backup Assist feature. 

All non-hybrid F-150s with a 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed now get a 36-gallon fuel tank to reduce fill-up frequency, and a Class IV hitch also comes standard. 

Changes to the exterior are modest but notable. A new wrap-around grille curves into the fenders and houses slightly modified C-shaped LED headlights. An available modular bumper hangs below, enabling a factory-installed winch or a Rigid LED light bar and other accessories. It has end caps that expose more tire—the Tremor sports 33-inch Grabber A/TX tires (275/70R18) on black 18-inch wheels. 

The taillight design bends like an elbow and occupies more of the fender than the tailgate to better account for Ford’s available Pro Access two-way tailgate with a center door that swings open to the passenger side.

What about this 2024 Ford F-150 Pro Access tailgate thing? 

The tailgate folds down manually or via power as usual, but Ford now puts a door inside the tailgate that hinges open at 100-, 70-, or 37-degree angles, the latter making it easy to open and access the bed with a trailer attached. That resolves one of the limitations of GM’s 6-way power tailgate, though GM’s is more flexible for hauling longer loads securely, as well as rocking out to an integrated tailgate speaker. 

In design it’s more like Ram’s 60:40 barn door split gate. In Ford’s case, it’s roughly the center third that swings open. A grab handle in the bed and a retractable step help users climb up, as does a longer and wider center bumper step, all of which allowed Ford to ditch the retractable handle helper. It’s a cleaner, more functional design that makes getting things in and out a whole lot easier. Running the hoses from the compressor strapped onto the tie downs to refill the tires after off-roading a Tremor was much less of a reach. 

The Pro Access tailgate is optional on Lariat, Tremor, and Raptor models, and standard on King Ranch, Platinum, and Platinum Plus trucks. It’s not available on the Raptor R.

Is the 2024 Ford F-150 Tremor a poor man’s Raptor?

It’s hard to call a $66,145 truck a poor man’s anything, but the 2024 Ford F-150 Tremor is the total package for truck owners who don’t use much paved road on the daily commute. They might not go extreme off-roading but they do whatever the hell else they want to do, from towing up to 13,500 pounds, or to haul a tree stand deeper into the hunting grounds. Compared to the Raptor, it’s more than a half-foot narrower, it’s lighter on its 18-inch feet, and it can tow more (the Raptor tows 8,300 pounds, the R tows 8,700 pounds). 

The 400-hp 5.0-liter V-8 comes standard on the Tremor, but my tester had the turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 with the same V-8 horsepower but 500 instead of 410 lb-ft of torque…for an extra $90. I had to triple check that amount. 

With either engine, the 2024 Tremor costs less than a Lariat and $14,180 less than a Raptor. It can’t do all the things a Raptor can do, of course, but it just might be the most complete F-150 on sale. I tested the new model on a switchbacking access road up and down a mountain, deep in off-the-grid territory, ascending over rocky ruts and descending into terrain too tough for Subarus or soft-roaders. It impressed me enough to recommend it as the F-150 to buy.

It comes as a crew cab with the short bed, and includes a locking rear differential as well as hill descent control and Trail Turn assist that locks the inside rear wheel to make tighter turns that essentially shrink the wheelbase. It rolls on 33-inch General Grabber A/TX tires over black 18-inch wheels, has an inch wider track thanks to Tremor-specific control arms and knuckles, and rides on monotube front shocks and twin-tube rear shocks. The ground clearance rises to 9.8 inches (1.6 inches higher than your standard F-150) and the approach, breakover, and departure angles improve. It all adds up to easy off-roading. The orange accents, four tow hooks, and standard running boards add some flair and function. 

An optional modular front bumper finished in black can accommodate a dealer-installed Warn 12,000-pound winch. In Off-road mode, the fog lights on either side of the bumper respond to the steering wheel position so when you steer right, only the passenger side fog light illuminates. 

The F-150 Tremor handles all the off-road terrain you’ll likely encounter, unless you seek out the extreme.

How did the 2024 Ford F-150 PowerBoost hybrid improve?

Changes to the first-generation F-150 hybrid are subtle but significant. Ford eliminated the belt-integrated starter generator and it no longer offers the hybrid with rear-wheel drive . It’s a four-wheel-drive hybrid deal or nothing, starting on XLT grades as a crew cab with the short bed for about $58,500 (XL hybrids are for fleet customers only).  

During brief road testing in the desert beyond Palm Springs, Calif., the PowerBoost hybrid exhibited smoother power handoffs between the motor and engine power at low speeds. 

This road test also included a chance to test BlueCruise 1.2, Ford’s limited hands-free driving system. It’s fine, but still pales to GM’s Super Cruise system.

When the hybrid powertrain launched with the 2021 model year, it could feel uncertain in low gears, as if the system didn’t know when to use engine, motor, or dual power at once. Now, on roads leading to the highway, it felt quieter, calmer, and overall less noticeable, which is what I want out of any hybrid powertrain.

Behind the wheel, the change was subtle, and Ford didn't tout it during the press briefing. Yet engineers confirmed that significant software enhancements were made to enable Ford to eliminate the belt starter. 

The 12-volt battery still engages the starter connected to the flywheel on startup, as in other combustion engine vehicles, but more than 300 software enhancements to the hybrid motor deleted the need for a second starter on the accessory belt drive, according to Ford. The 35-kw motor thus spins up the engine through the 10-speed automatic transmission. Otherwise, mechanically it's the same, with the motor powered by a small 1.5-kwh battery pack, and the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 doing most of the heavy lifting in making 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque. 

It still comes with the 2.4-kw onboard generator that has 85 hours of run time on a full tank (30 gallon for hybrids) of gas. The 7.2-kw generator remains a $750 upgrade. 

The F-150 Hybrid with four-wheel drive still nets 23 mpg combined, but this year, the city rating drops 1 mpg to 22 mpg while the highway rating increases by the same amount to 24 mpg. 

Add up all of these small changes, and it’s easy to see how the Ford F-150 continues to lead the pickup truck segment in America.
