In spring and fall, you have a chance to see the world's largest giant whirlpool, which reaches a diameter of about 30 meters. However, the Uzushio cannot always be seen, so we recommend that you check the timetable before departure and visit during the times when the Uzushio is most likely to appear.
This article introduces the sightseeing points and facilities that we actually experienced aboard the Uzushio Cruise.

The Naruto whirlpools (̉Q, Naruto no Uzushio) occur along the Shikoku coast of the Naruto Strait, and are created by the large volumes of water moving between the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean between high and low tide, combined with the unique underwater geography of the narrow strait.
According to the change of tides, the whirlpools occur roughly every six hours and can typically be seen once in the morning and once in the afternoon for an hour or two. The whirlpools vary in size depending on the intensity of the tides. They tend to be larger in summer than in winter and are largest during spring tides, which occur every two weeks when the sun, earth and moon are lined up.
Under ideal conditions, whirlpools of up to 20 meters in diameters can be observed. On the other hand, there is not much to see on calm days or outside of the peak times. Therefore, it is of great importance that prospective visitors check the whirlpool schedules (see links below ) when planning a trip to Naruto .
The whirlpools are not dangerous to boats and are best viewed from sightseeing cruises which get right up next to the whirlpools. There are two companies that run tours from nearby piers on Shikoku and one that operates from Awaji Island on the opposite side of the strait.
On the Shikoku side, Uzushio Kisen operates small boats with water level decks from a pier just outside Naruto Park. A little bit further away lies the pier of Uzushio Kankosen, which operates the "Aqua Eddy" (medium sized boats with two decks and underwater windows) and "Wonder Naruto" (large sized boats with two decks) to the whirlpools.
As the whirlpools are best viewed from a higher vantage point, it is recommended to take a "Wonder Naruto" boat tour which offers the best views from its upper first-class deck at an additional charge. Boat tours last 20-30 minutes and depart about twice per hour.
The next best views are from Uzu no Michi , an enclosed walkway that extends under the Onaruto Bridge and overlooks the whirlpools. The walkway's observation room sits 45 meters above the whirlpools below which can be seen through glass windows set in the floor.
Naruto Park (Naruto Koen), the park encompassing the attractions around the whirlpools, also has a number of walking trails and viewpoints found around it with views of the whirlpools and Onaruto Bridge. The best views of the swirling water are from the Senjojiki Observatory . Another viewpoint, Eska Hill , is accessible via a 68 meter long, paid escalator.
Also found in the park is the Onaruto Bridge Museum Eddy , which is devoted to the construction of the Onaruto Bridge, the strait and its whirlpools. Last but not least, the Otsuka Museum of Art , Japan's largest museum, stands out toward the park's southern edge and displays nothing but reproductions of Western art.
Getting there and around
Naruto Park is located about seven kilometers north of central Naruto City and can be reached by hourly buses from Naruto Station (20 minutes, 320 yen one way).
Note also that many highway buses traveling from the Osaka area in the direction of Tokushima (but not in the opposite direction) stop at the "Naruto Koen-guchi" bus stop in Naruto Park along the expressway.
Most attractions in Naruto Park are within walking distance of each other. Only the Uzushio Kakosen sightseeing boat pier lies about two kilometers away. However, most buses between Naruto Station and Naruto Park stop at the sightseeing boat pier along the way.

Naruto Uzushio Cruising
Watch the famous Naruto whirlpools from a ship
Naruto Strait is located between Awaji Island of Hyogo Prefecture and Naruto city of Tokushima Prefecture. When you come to Tokushima from Kansai by bus or car, you will cross the Ohnaruto Bridge over this strait.
Naruto Whirlpools ( Naruto Uzushio ) are caused by two tides colliding in this narrow strait (1.3km). At its best season, the diameter of the largest whirlpools is over 20m. On an Uzushio cruising ship , we can see closely these dynamic whirlpools coming and going with a roar. The best viewing chance comes one hour before and after spring tide. Please check the tide calendar before you choose a cruise time.
There is another option if you get seasick easily. The Naruto Whirlpools can also be seen from the Ohnaruto Bridge Promenade ( Uzu-no-Michi ) or the Tea Garden Observatory ( Ochaen-Tenbodai ) .

History of Sverdlovsk Oblast
The first people settled here in the Stone Age. At the end of the 16th century, the Russian kingdom gained control of the region. In the 17th century, the most significant stage of the initial development of this area happened, when Russian settlers began a massive advance to the east. In 1598, the first settlers founded the town of Verkhoturye on the territory of the present Sverdlovsk region.
Verkhoturye became the first capital of the Urals because of its strategic location on the Babinov road - an important crossroads of trade routes. Sverdlovsk oblast acted as a transshipment base between the central part of the country and the actively developed regions of Siberia and Central Asia.
The presence of strategic reserves of iron and copper ore, as well as large forest areas, predetermined the specialization of the region (ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, wood processing, mining, etc.). Exploration of minerals in the Sverdlovsk region began at the end of the 17th century.
In the 18th century, the Demidov dynasty founded several plants in the region that turned into large production and economic complexes. The local industry was characterized by a high level of technological development. The blast furnaces of the Ekaterinburg, Nevyansk, Tagil iron-making plants were superior in performance to the best European models of that time, and their products were the leading item of Russian exports.
More historical facts…
The launch of the Trans-Siberian Railway became a landmark event in the life of the Middle Urals, allowing large-scale export of plant products. Between 1920 and 1930, the Urals was able to once again take its place as the leading industrial region of Russia by strengthening its mining industry, creating new production facilities, developing energy and mass urban construction.
In the years of the first five-year plans, along with the reconstruction of old enterprises, several new large industrial facilities were opened: Uralmashzavod, Uralelektrotyazhmash, tool and ball bearing plants in Sverdlovsk, Uralvagonzavod and Nizhny Tagil metallurgical plant in Nizhny Tagil, pipe plants in Pervouralsk and Kamensk-Uralsky, copper smelters in Krasnouralsk and Sredneuralsk, the Ural aluminum smelter in Kamensk-Uralsky and others.
On October 3, 1938, the territory of Sverdlovsk Oblast was finally formed. During the Second World War, from July 1941 to December 1942, more than 2 million people came to the Urals region, of which more than 700 thousand stayed in Sverdlovsk Oblast.
In the postwar period, Sverdlovsk Oblast continued to develop as a major industrial center of the Urals. The industry of the region was a supplier of the most important types of machinery, products of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, chemical, electric power, light, and food industries. Mechanical engineering and metalworking retained their leading place in the structure of the local industry.
Being one of the most important industrial and defense centers of the Soviet Union, the Sverdlovsk region remained closed to foreigners until 1991.
