How to Check Your UK Visa Application Status

Paul Richmond

If you’ve applied for a UK visa, waiting for a decision can be a stressful experience, particularly if you have a travel deadline or other important plans. Fortunately, the UK visa application process allows applicants to track the progress of their UK visa application and check their UK visa application status.

In this post, we’ll walk you through the various ways you can check your UK visa application status, so that you can stay informed and up-to-date throughout the UK visa application process.

We also provide some useful additional information for anyone who is looking to track the status of a UK visa application, including Home Office service standards for deciding a UK visa application, how to find out current UK visa processing times, the factors that can delay a decision on a UK visa application, how to speed up a decision on a UK visa application and how to chase a delayed decision on a UK visa application.

The Importance of Checking Your UK Visa Application Status

Checking your UK visa application status is an important step in the application process. It allows you to stay informed and can give you an idea of how much longer you may have to wait for a decision. By checking your UK visa application status regularly, you can ensure that your application is moving through the process as expected and that there are no issues or delays.

Additionally, tracking your UK visa application status can help you identify any errors or omissions in your application and allow you to correct them before it’s too late. For example, if you notice that your application has been pending for longer than the average processing time , you may want to contact UKVI to enquire about the status of your application and ensure that there are no issues that need to be addressed.

By checking your UK visa application status, you can plan ahead and make any necessary arrangements. For example, if you receive a notification that your application has been approved, you can start making travel plans or booking accommodation. Alternatively, if you receive a notification that your UK visa application has been refused, you may need to consider reapplying or seeking legal advice regarding an immigration appeal , administrative review or judicial review .

Therefore, it is highly recommended that you regularly check your UK visa application status to stay informed and ensure a smooth UK visa application process.

Immigration Health Surcharge reference number (if applicable): If you paid the Immigration Health Surcharge then you may be asked to provide your IHS number when tracking the decision on your UK visa application.

Frequently Asked Questions About Checking UK Visa Application Status

Does ukvi have standard processing times for uk visa applications.

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has published service standards for waiting times for decisions on visa and immigration applications.  If you want to track the status of a UK visa application then it is useful to refer to these.

If a UK visa application includes all relevant information and supporting documents (and the Home Office does not need to request further evidence or explanation) then the following waiting time customer service standards should apply:

  • Non-settlement visa applications submitted outside the UK: 90% to be decided within 3 weeks; 98% within 6 weeks and 100% within 12 weeks of the application date (where 1 week is 5 working days);
  • Settlement visa applications submitted outside the UK: 98.5% of settlement applications to be decided within 12 weeks of the application date and 100% within 24 weeks of the application date (where 1 week is 5 working days);
  • Applications for leave to remain submitted within the UK, including as spouses, workers and students: 8 weeks to be decided;
  • Applications for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) submitted within the UK: 6 months to be decided;
  • Applications for no time limit (NTL) submitted within the UK: 6 months to be decided;
  • Organisations seeking to sponsor a worker: 8 weeks;
  • Organisations updating their sponsor licence details: 18 weeks.

These service standards are the visa processing times that UKVI aims to deliver on for the processing of straightforward, complete applications, based on its customer charter .  Actual UK visa processing times can vary considerably.  However, if the service standard has been exceeded then this is a factor that can be raised as part of any attempt to chase a delayed decision .

What Are the Current Home Office UK Visa Processing Times?

Aside from its customer service standards for visa processing, the Home Office also publishes up-to-date information on current processing times for visa and immigration applications submitted both within the UK and outside the UK.

Up-to-date information on current UK Visa processing times for all the main immigration routes can be found in our post:

  • UK Visa Processing & Decision Waiting Times

If you wish to track the status of your UK visa application then, in addition to referring to the customer service standard, it may be helpful to refer to these published current processing times in order to ascertain approximately how long it should take for your pending UK visa application to be decided.

What Factors Can Delay UK Visa Processing Times?

When you check the status of your UK visa application you should be aware that there are a number of factors which can delay UK visa processing times and cause the customer service standard and/or the current processing time to be exceeded, including:

  • The complexity of the case, for example if it involves an assessment of Article 8 ECHR rights or derivative rights of EEA extended family members;
  • Concerns regarding suitability requirements such as criminality;
  • Consideration of any adverse immigration history;
  • Any concerns regarding the authenticity of documents;
  • The volume of documents provided;
  • Whether further investigations are required or an interview scheduled;
  • The capacity of caseworkers; and
  • The time of the year.

If you are looking to check your UK visa application status then it is worth keeping in mind that there is no published service standard for waiting times for more complex applications and UKVI has a wide margin of appreciation with regard to the timing of their decisions.

How Can I Get a Faster Decision on a UK Visa Application?

UK Visas & Immigration offers a ‘priority service’ and a ‘super priority service’ for applicants who, for an additional fee, wish to receive a faster decision on their UK visa application.  Selecting one of these premium services at the point of application will ensure that an application is placed at the front of the queue at every stage of the decision-making process.

In our comprehensive guide to UK Visa Premium and Priority Services, we look at the Priority Service and Super Priority Service in detail, covering everything from processing times, to current availability, costs and whether an application is likely to be suitable for an expedited decision:

  • A Guide to UK Visa Premium and Priority Services

How Can I Chase a Delayed UK Visa Application?

It is deeply frustrating when the Home Office takes longer than stated on its website to process a visa or immigration application. If the processing of your UK visa application has been delayed then, as well as tracking the progress on your UK visa application, you may wish to consider taking additional steps to chase a decision on your UK visa application.

We explain how to chase a delayed UK Visa or immigration decision in 6 steps in our post:

  • How to Chase a Delayed UK Visa Application

In conclusion, checking your UK visa application status is a crucial step in the application process, as it will allow you to stay informed and up-to-date on the progress of your application.

Whether you use the VFS Global website, the TLScontact website, the UKVI website or the UKVI telephone enquiry lines, it’s important to ensure that you have all the necessary information to hand before checking your status.

Remember to be patient, as processing times can vary depending on the type of visa you have applied for and the nature of your application.

By following the steps outlined in this post, you’ll be able to check your UK visa application status with ease and plan your next steps accordingly. Good luck with your application!

How to Check your UK Visa Application Status

Flexible Working

IN THIS SECTION

If you are awaiting a decision on an application for a UK visa, tracking the progress of your application can be crucial to planning ahead, especially where you are time-pressured for a decision.

The following guide looks at how UK visa applicants can check the status of their applications, whether you have applied to extend an existing visa or switch to a new category of visa from within the UK, or you are applying for entry clearance or leave to enter the UK from another country.

We also share general guidance on the standard and premium visa processing times.

Checking your UK visa application status – in-country applications

Most applications to extend leave to remain in the UK, including applications to switch to another visa category, as well as applications for settlement and citizenship , are now made through the UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services ( UKVCAS ).

UKVCAS was launched by the UK Home Office to speed up the processing of in-country further leave to remain applications. Applicants are required to attend a single appointment to have their identity confirmed, enrol any biometric information (fingerprints and photograph) that may be required and submit their documentation in support.

However, applicants will not be given a decision at their UKVCAS appointment. The visa application and supporting documents will be sent to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to be processed. UKVI is a division of the Home Office responsible for the UK’s visa system, who will allocate to a specific case worker for a decision to be made.

UKVCAS cannot answer queries about the status of an application. You would instead need to contact UKVI.

If you have already submitted a UK visa application and are now waiting to hear the outcome, visit the GOV.UK website to find information and updates from UKVI on visa processing in general.

You cannot currently track your individual visa application online – either through UKVCAS or UKVI – but you can use an online tool to obtain information on which department to contact for your particular application.

You will need to answer a couple of questions about your application when using this tool, such as the case reference number assigned when you submitted the application, and you should be provided contact information for different departments at UKVI.

You can call the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) contact centre by telephone on 0300 790 6268 – select option 2 – Monday to Thursday (excluding bank holidays), 9am to 4:45pm and Friday (excluding bank holidays), 9am to 4:30pm.

If you have any questions about British citizenship applications, you will need to contact the Citizenship and Nationality Enquiries team by email  [email protected],  or by phone: 0300 790 6268 – select option 2 – Monday to Thursday, 9am to 4:45pm and Friday, 9am to 4:30pm.

How to check UK visa application status – out of country applications

When applying for a visa from outside the UK, you will need to attend a visa application centre in the country from which you are applying to provide your biometric information, together with all necessary documents in support of your application.

As with in-country visa applications, you will not receive a decision on your application at your appointment to enrol your biometric information and provide your supporting documentation. You will instead be required to wait for a decision from UKVI.

UKVI website

You can check the status of your out-of-country application using the UKVI website. This ‘General Enquiry’ service incurs a charge of £2.74 per application, which covers the initial email enquiry as well as follow-up emails relating to the same enquiry.

You will need a credit or debit card to use this service, where you will be asked to enter your payment details before sending your email, but you will not be charged until your message has been sent. UKVI will usually reply within 2 days, except on Saturdays, Sundays and UK public holidays.

TLScontact website

On the TLScontact website, click ‘Provide Documents and Biometrics’ and then ‘Continue’ to be redirected to your account. Choose the option to ‘Track’ which will display the real-time status of your application.

VFS website

On the VFS Global website, choose the location of the visa application centre where you provided your biometrics, then select ‘Track your application’. IF you do not ave the option to track your application, you should try the UKVI website.

By telephone

You can call UKVI with a question about your application on +44 (0)300 790 6268 – select option 1, or +44 (0)203 875 4669. This service is open Monday to Friday, 24 hours, at a cost of 69p per minute on top of your standard network charges.

Please note, if your message is urgent, you can phone the contact centre instead, although the contact centre staff will not have any involvement in the outcome of your case.

What are the standard processing times for UK visa applications?

The time in which it will take to process your UK visa application will primarily depend on whether you have applied to either come to or remain in the UK. The category of visa that you are applying for may also affect your application wait times.

Generally speaking, the wait times for visa applications made from outside the UK are typically shorter than for in-country applications.

If you are applying to remain in the UK, you should still be allowed to stay in the UK pending any decision from UKVI, so long as you have submitted your application to extend your leave to remain or switch to another category before your existing visa expires.

UKVI publishes standard processing times for applications on its website in accordance with their customer charter.

It is important to remember that the guide times provided are not a guarantee.

Applications made in the UK

Based on the current processing times, for those applying to remain in the UK on a temporary basis, including as workers and students, the standard processing time is 8 weeks. Applications for indefinite leave to remain made from inside the UK will usually be dealt with within 6 months.

Applications made outside the UK

For those applying for a visa from outside the UK, the target is for 90% of non-settlement applications to be processed within 3 weeks, 98% within 6 weeks and 100% within 12 weeks of the application date, where 1 week is 5 working days.

Currently, student and Skilled Worker applications are taking 3 weeks to process out of country, while family visas are taking 24 weeks.

For those applying for settlement from outside the UK, it is estimated that 98.5% of settlement applications will be dealt with within 12 weeks of the application date, and 100% within 24 weeks of the application date, where again 1 week is 5 working days.

How does premium processing work?

If you are looking to obtain a faster decision on your visa application, in many cases it is possible to pay for premium processing, or what’s known as a priority service, when you submit your application. You will need to check your application type for available priority services. If you are applying outside the UK, you will also need to check with the visa application centre where you intend to make your application.

There may be two premium processing options available to you: the ‘5 working day priority service’ and the ‘next working day super priority service’. The timescales for priority services will run from when you complete your appointment to provide your biometric information and supporting evidence, although these times do not include the time taken to issue you with your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP). You will usually receive your BRP within 7 working days after a decision has been made on your application.

For super priority service appointments attended on a Saturday or Sunday, the appointment will be deemed as attended on the next working day. Where there is a bank holiday the next working day will be classed as a Tuesday, but in most cases this will be a Monday. This means, for example, a Saturday appointment will usually be deemed as attended on the Monday after the weekend, and the decision on your visa application completed and dispatched by the end of the next working day.

What can delay a UK visa application?

If your visa application is straightforward, for example, where a decision can be made on it without you being asked for more information, it will usually be decided within the standard processing times or, where you have paid for a faster decision, the premium processing times.

If, however, your application is more complex, the usual times may not necessarily apply and you may need to wait longer for a decision. If your application is delayed, you will be informed by letter as to what will happen next within the relevant timescales for your visa.

If you applied for a priority or super priority visa and it is not possible to meet the applicable timescale, your application will still be put at the front of the queue at every stage of the decision-making process. UKVI will also still aim to process your application within standard global timescales. In these circumstances, you may be able to request a refund of the additional fee paid for premium processing.

Your application could be delayed for a number of reasons. This could be due to backlogs in processing applications by UKVI, both generally and, more recently, because of the coronavirus pandemic. This could also be because your supporting documents need to be verified and/or you are required to attend an interview, or because of your personal circumstances, such as any adverse immigration history or criminal convictions.

Your visa application will be assessed both in accordance with the general requirements under the UK immigration rules, as well as the specific eligibility criteria required for your visa category. If there is insufficient evidence in support of your application, or a question mark over whether you qualify for a particular visa or satisfy the general requirements to come to or remain in the UK, further investigations may be warranted.

If you have been asked to provide additional documentation in support of your UK visa application, or have concerns about attending an interview, expert advice should be sought from an immigration specialist to guide you through this process.

Checking your UK visa application status FAQs

How can i check the status of my uk visa application.

There are different ways of checking different types of applications. For example, if you have made a visa extension application from within the UK, there is no online checking service available so you would instead need to call UKVI.

How do I check my VFS application status?

If you have applied overseas for a UK visa and attended an appointment at a visa application centre, you can go to the GOV.UK online tool to track your VFS application status. VFS are the commercial partners used by UKVI to help deliver their overseas visa services. You will be given the option of contacting UKVI by either telephone or email, although email enquiries are more likely to be directed to the caseworker dealing with your application.

How can I check my UK visa status with passport number?

When you first submitted your application for a UK visa, you will have been asked to provide your passport. Once your application has been successfully submitted, you should then have been given a case reference number. You will need to have this number to hand when you phone or email UKVI to check your UK visa status and the progress of your application.

Getting an online immigration status (eVisa)

This advice applies to England. See advice for See advice for Northern Ireland , See advice for Scotland , See advice for Wales

You should check if you can get online evidence of your immigration status - also called an ‘eVisa’.

Most physical immigration documents are being replaced by eVisas. This includes:

biometric residence permits (BRPs)

biometric residence cards (BRCs)

stamps in passports

'vignette' stickers in passports

Getting an eVisa is free and won’t change your permission to live in the UK.

You’ll need to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account before the end of 2024 to access your eVisa.

If your biometric residence permit expires on 31 December 2024

Most biometric residence permits (BRPs) have an expiry date of 31 December 2024 - because eVisas are replacing BRPs. This doesn’t mean your visa ends on this date.

The Home Office will ask you to create an account for your eVisa before your BRP expires.

If you’re not sure when your visa ends, you can check the letter you got from the Home Office when they approved your application.

If you still can't find when your visa ends, talk to an adviser .

Video from the Home Office - what is an eVisa?

When you'll get an online immigration status

When you'll get an eVisa depends on your situation.

If you're applying for a visa or indefinite leave

The Home Office will ask you to create a UKVI account for your eVisa if you’re applying for:

a visa - unless you're visiting the UK for less than 6 months

indefinite leave to remain

You might need to create your online account during or after the application process. It depends what kind of visa you’re applying for.

If your application for a visa or indefinite leave is approved, you’ll get a temporary biometric residence permit (BRP) as well as an eVisa. The BRP will expire at the end of 2024. This doesn’t mean your visa ends on this date.

Later in 2024, the Home Office will stop issuing temporary BRPs and you’ll only get an eVisa.

If you already have a visa or indefinite leave

The Home Office will contact you during 2024 to ask you to create a UKVI account for your eVisa if you have:

a visa - unless you’re visiting the UK for less than 6 months

indefinite leave to remain (ILR)

Make sure the Home Office has your correct email and postal address so they can reach you. To update your contact details, you can fill in a change of circumstances form on GOV.UK .

If the Home Office can’t contact you, you can still create a UKVI account later in 2024.

If your visa ends in 2024

You’ll get an eVisa if you apply to extend your visa or get indefinite leave.

If you have ILR and you don’t have a BRP

If your have an ILR stamp in your passport, you’ll need to get an eVisa before your passport expires.

You can apply for a free BRP. This will make it easier for you to set up a UKVI account when the Home Office contact you. You can apply for a BRP on GOV.UK .

If you have pre-settled or settled status

If you get pre-settled or settled status through the EU Settlement scheme, you’ll get an eVisa.

If you’re not an EU Citizen, you’ll get a physical immigration document - but these will also be replaced by eVisas.

You can check how to view and prove your pre-settled or settled status .

If you already have an online account

You don’t need to create a UKVI account if you already have one. You might already have one if you’ve applied for:

If you can’t access your account

You can get help to recover it. You’ll need to have access to the phone number and email address used to create your account. Check how to recover your UKVI account on GOV.UK .

Creating an online account

You’ll need to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to get an online immigration status.

You’ll be able to use your UKVI account to:

view and prove your online status

check what rights you have in the UK

update your personal details - like your contact information

How to create a UKVI account

The Home Office will send you a link to create your online account. You’ll also need to download an app called ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ to verify your ID.

To create your account, you’ll need:

access to an email address

an identity document - for example, your passport or current BRP

your current BRP number - if you already have a visa

your application number - if you’re applying for a new visa

a smart phone to download the ID verification app

You can check how to download the UK Immigration: ID Check app on GOV.UK .

If you’ve already proved your identity at a Visa Application Centre or Service Support Centre, you still need to create a UKVI account.

If you need help creating an account

You can ask someone you trust - like a friend or family member.

If you can’t manage your own account, you can add someone to your account who can do it for you - known as a ‘proxy’. For example, you might need a proxy if you’re a child or you have a disability that means you can’t do it yourself.

If you still need help creating a UKVI account, talk to an adviser .

If you need help using a computer or mobile device

You can get help from the Home Office’s assisted digital service if you either:

aren’t confident using a mobile device or computer

don’t have access to a mobile device or computer

don’t have internet access

The service is provided by We Are Group.

They can help you over the phone. You might be able to visit someone or they might be able to visit you at home - this will depend on where you live.  Find out more about how to get help from We Are Group  on GOV.UK.

your local library -  find your local library on GOV.UK

Proving your rights in the UK

You can give a share code to someone who needs to check your immigration status - like your employer.

You can still use your expired BRP to get a share code until the end of 2025 - as long as your visa is still valid.

You can get a share code on GOV.UK .

This code is only valid for 90 days - if it isn’t used within the 90 days you’ll need to get a new one.

Proving your right to enter the UK

You still need to show your physical immigration documents when you travel - for example, your BRP or stamp in your passport.

Before the end of 2024, you’ll be able to use your eVisa to enter the UK instead of your physical document.

You can check the rules for entering the UK on GOV.UK .

Updating your UKVI account

Make sure you keep your account up to date.

If you don't keep your account details up to date, you might not be allowed to enter the UK.

You’ll need to update your UKVI account if:

you renew or replace the identity document you used to apply - for example, if your passport expires

you change your name - for example, if you get married

you change your address, phone number or email address - your contact details need to be up to date so you can view or share your status

you want to change your identity document or add another one

You can add or change your identity document using your UKVI account. You might be asked to send your passport or national identity card to the Home Office.

It will be a number of weeks before you can log in with your new identity document details - make sure you keep the details of your old one until then.

When you add a new identity document to your account, you’ll need to sign in using that identity document in the future.

Don’t worry if you can’t see your old identity document on your account. It’s still there, but the system might only show the most recent one you’ve added.

You can update your details in your UKVI account on GOV.UK .

If you don’t get confirmation after you've updated your account, or you’ve been waiting longer than 4 weeks, contact the UK Visas and Immigration contact centre .

If you have problems with your eVisa

If you create a UKVI account before the Home Office contacts you, you won’t be able to see your eVisa in your account.

If you need help sharing your status, updating your details or correcting an error, contact the UK Visas and Immigration contact centre .

How to Track your UK Visa Application Status

How to Track your UK Visa Application Status

Amar Ali Immigration Solicitors

By Amar Ali, Immigration Solicitor

Note: If we are not your lawyers who represented your case or applied for your visa, we cannot help you to check your visa application status unfortunately. Please contact UKVI (Home Office) for your visa status enquiries. For more information, please find in this content.

Having worked with thousands of UK immigration clients from around the world over many years, we know just how nerve-wracking it can be to wait for the outcome of a visa application. In this article, we are going to discuss how to check the progress of your application, what to expect when a decision is made, why some applications can be delayed, and what you can do if you receive a rejection of your application.

How will you know if your visa is approved?

You will receive a communication from UK Visas and Immigration regarding whether your visa has been approved or denied, typically in the form of a letter, a text message, and/or email.

If you are outside of the UK, you will receive a sticker (called a “vignette”) that allows you to travel to the UK. Your vignette will contain:

  • The type of visa you have been issued
  • The start and end dates of your visa
  • The conditions of your visa (e.g. whether you can work).

If you submitted your passport during your application process, you will receive it back with the vignette inside, or if you kept your passport after application, you will need to return to your local immigration centre to receive your vignette. The vignette needs to go into your passport, and you will need to present it on your arrival in the UK. For those planning to stay in the UK for longer than six months, you will have 10 days to collect your Biometric Residence Permit. Where you collect your Biometric Residence Permit from will depend on where you specified in your application.

If you are applying from the UK, then you should receive a letter or email that confirms that your application is approved. Once approved, your Biometric Residence Permit should arrive with you by courier within 7 - 10 days of receiving your decision letter. If your Biometric Residence Permit does not arrive, you must report it lost to UKVI, so they may issue another permit.

In all cases, when waiting for a visa decision, we highly recommend checking your email “spam” folder for any emails from the Home Office. We have seen many cases whereby applicants have received a decision, but they were unaware because the email was not showing in their “inbox” folder.

The process of checking the progress of your UK visa application will depend on whether you applied from inside or outside the UK, as we explain below.

Checking UK visa applications made outside the UK

If you applied for your UK visa from outside the UK, you will not be able to check the progress of your application online, but you can contact UKVI for an update.

The UKVI contact centre in the UK can assist with any of the following types of queries:

  • General queries about applying for a visa to come to the UK
  • Questions about the progress of your application
  • Technical problems with your application
  • Made a mistake in your online application
  • Problems logging into your account or with your password
  • Problems with making a payment to UKVI online or pending payments

There are two main methods of contacting the UKVI contact centre: 1) submitting an online query or 2) phoning UKVI.

  • Submitting an online query outside the UK

You can email your enquiry to the UKVI contact centre 1 , however, to do so, you will first need to pay a small fee of £2.74 online 2 . This fee covers your initial email and any following emails on the same matter. UKVI explains that you will need a credit or debit card to use this service and that you will need to enter your payment details before sending your message.

Responses to email enquiries should be received from UKVI within 5 working days.

  • Telephone: +44 (0)300 790 6268 (or +44 (0)203 875 4669 if you cannot dial 0300 numbers) and select option 1
  • Monday to Friday, 24 hours
  • Calls cost 69 pence per minute on top of your standard network charges

Checking UK visa applications made inside the UK

For an update on an application made inside the UK, you can phone UKVI using the following details:

  • Telephone: 0300 790 6268 - select option 1, then option 2
  • Monday to Thursday (excluding bank holidays), 9am to 4:45pm
  • Friday (excluding bank holidays), 9am to 4:30pm

What do you need to provide to track your UK visa status?

To track your visa status with UKVI, you may be asked for some or all of the following information:

  • Your case reference number or case ID (this is a number provided when you submitted your application)
  • Payment Reference Number – you will have received this when paying your application fee
  • Unique application number – this is provided on correspondence from UKVI
  • Your Biometric Residence Permit Number – if you have one.

All of this information will be included in your correspondence or emails from UKVI.

Reasons for a UK visa decision delay

The Home Office publishes average processing times 3 for each type of visa they handle. Applications that are straightforward and where all information and payments have been provided will typically be processed within this standard timescale (or within the 1 or 5 working day timescale if you use the priority or super-priority / premium services)

Applications may be delayed for a number of reasons, including:

  • Due to the complexity of the application
  • Where more information or supporting documentation is required before a decision can be made
  • A large backlog of applications at the UKVI process centre
  • You are required to attend an interview to verify supporting documents or to provide more details before a decision can be made
  • Due to certain aspects of your history (e.g. criminality).
  • Where there is a discrepancy found in the details provided (e.g. where you have declared a certain income, but this differs from the information held by HMRC).

Can I speed up my visa application decision process?

In many cases, delays can be avoided by engaging the services of an immigration solicitor who is well versed in spotting issues that may give rise to problems and which need to be dealt with in the initial application submission.

If you need a faster decision on your visa application than the standard processing time, it is always best to use one of UKVI’s enhanced services. Depending on the type of visa application and where you are located, you may have the option of using the priority application service, which provides a decision within 5 working days for an additional cost of £500. You may also be able to use the super-priority service, which provides a decision within 1 working day for an additional cost of £800.

Details on these services and whether these can be used for your visa type and location can be found on the UKVI website 4 .

What to do if your UK visa application is rejected?

If your application is refused, the letter or email you receive will explain the reasons why and the options now available to you, including whether you can appeal or bring an Administrative Review if you believe an error has been made by UKVI.

In any event, we recommend speaking to a specialist immigration lawyer if you receive a refusal on your application. Depending on your circumstances, instead of appealing or lodging an Administrative Review, they may recommend submitting a new application, applying for a different type of visa or immigration status (such as Indefinite Leave to Remain ), or even applying for a Judicial Review (challenging the legal basis for decision in court).

UK TOURIST VISA APPLICATION PROCESS

United Kingdom UK Tourist Visa Requirements - Visa Application

First, check if you need a visitor visa to travel to the UK in the “UK tourist visa requirements by nationality” section above.

Alternatively, you can check your eligibility and requirements on the UK gov website .

Validity of UK tourist visa

UK tourist visas are valid for 6 months from the date of visa issue.

Example: If your UK visa was issued on January 15, the visa will be valid until July 15.

NOTE There have been instances where visas were issued with validity starting from the date of travel mentioned in the visa application.

When to apply for UK visa

You can apply for a UK visa up to 3 months in advance.

Example: If you plan to visit the UK on April 15, you can apply for your UK visa on or after January 16.

Also, keep in mind that you must apply for your UK visa at least 3 weeks prior to your travel, otherwise, you may not receive your visa on time. There are no refunds if you receive your visa after your travel date.

IMPORTANT The UK visa process can take up to 3 weeks and even longer in some cases. I strongly recommend applying for your UK visa at least 2 months in advance.

How long can you stay in the UK?

The UK tourist visa allows you to stay up to 180 days in the UK. But if you stay that long continuously in the UK on a tourist visa, you will have serious trouble getting another UK visa in the future or entering the UK next time.

Here is my advice. Stick to the days you have mentioned in your UK visa application. A few days more or less is fine. But staying months on your UK tourist visa will pretty much look like you “live in the UK” rather than “vacation/holiday”.

Application procedure

The UK visa application is online. You must apply for the visa online at the UK Visas and Immigration website

Below are the steps you will go through for your UK tourist visa application

  • Go to the UK Visas and Immigration website
  • Select your preferred language, type of visa, your country, nearest visa application center, etc
  • Create a login using email and password
  • Complete in the application form
  • Sign the declaration
  • Pay visa fee
  • Submit the application
  • Download and print the submitted visa application form
  • Make an appointment at your nearest UK visa application center
  • Attend the appointment at your nearest UK visa application center
  • Submit your passport, visa application and supporting documents at the visa application center
  • If applying from the US, Australia or New Zealand, mail your passport, visa application and biometrics receipt to your nearest visa application center
  • Pickup/receive the passport when the visa decision is made

Below are some of the information you will provide in the application form

  • Your travel dates to the UK
  • Your hotel address and telephone number in the UK
  • Your total estimated cost for the trip
  • Your present home address and how many years you’ve lived there
  • Your parents’ names and their dates of birth
  • Your annual income
  • Your travel history for the past 10 years
  • Your employer details including the address and telephone number

Do you need flight tickets and hotel bookings for the UK visa application?

UKVI has stopped asking for flight tickets and hotel bookings for UK visa applications. But some nationalities are still being asked to submit flight tickets and hotel bookings.

When you complete your online UK visa application, you will see a checklist of documents to be uploaded. Check if you are asked to submit flight tickets and hotel bookings.

Even if you are asked to submit your flight tickets and hotel bookings, you should not book any flights/hotel until your UK visa is approved.

For flights, get a price quote from British Airways which can be used as a flight itinerary for your UK visa application. Visa ticket booking agencies such as DummyTicket offer flight itineraries for the UK visa for $19, valid for 2-3 weeks.

For hotel, book a refundable or pay at check-in hotel on booking.com or Expedia . Cancel the booking after your visa is approved.

For more options, check out my detailed flight itinerary and hotel reservation articles.

Photo requirements

A passport-size photo is only required if are exempt from biometrics. All tourist visa applicants MUST give their biometrics. Your fingerprints and digital photos are taken during your biometrics appointment.

Since all tourist visa applicants MUST give their biometrics, a passport-size photo is not required. But, I suggest bringing one with you on the day of your biometrics appointment just in case.

Visa application fee

The UK tourist visa application fee is £95 GBP. You will pay this fee in your local currency. Due to exchange rates, you may end up paying about £2 – £5 GBP more.

You can use the UK home office visa fee wizard to find out the exact visa fee that you would need to pay in your local currency.

If you are applying for a long-term UK tourist visa, below is the visa fee for 2, 5 and 10-year tourist visas.

  • 2 years: £361 GBP
  • 5 years: £655 GBP
  • 10 years: £822 GBP

Visa appointment

As part of the online application process, you will be prompted to make a visa appointment at your nearest UK Visa Application Center . Visa Application Centers are run by either VFSGlobal or TLSContact in conjunction with UK Visas and Immigration.

On the day of the appointment, you will give your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) and submit your original documents. You must bring all your original documents along with one photocopy of each including your passport.

Applicants from the USA, Australia (Adelaide and Hobart only) and New Zealand

You must give your biometrics at your nearest Biometric Enrollment Center and later send/post your documents to the nearest UK Visa Application Center.

During your online UK visa application, you will be prompted to make a biometrics appointment at your nearest Biometric enrollment center.

  • Biometric enrollment centers in the USA are run by the US Homeland Security.
  • Biometric enrollment centers in Australia are run by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
  • Biometric enrollment centers in New Zealand are run by Immigration New Zealand.

The biometrics appointment takes about 10-15 minutes. You will give your fingerprints and photo. You will receive an acknowledgment stamp on the biometric appointment confirmation.

You must then mail your original passport, visa application, biometric confirmation with the stamp, supporting documents and return postage to the UK Visa Application Center you have selected during your online visa application.

You will be notified via email when the UK Visa Application Center receives your documents.

Visa processing time

The UK tourist visa processing takes up to 3 weeks. There have been incidents where UKVI has taken over 2 months to process, especially when the visa applications are “not straightforward”.

UKVI considers a visa application “not straightforward” if additional information is required to process the visa. Additional information can be, verifying information, background check or requesting additional documents. UKVI usually notifies you in such cases and requests any additional documentation necessary.

Keeping such incidents in mind, ALWAYS apply for your UK visa at least 2 months prior to your travel.

If you have to travel sooner, you should purchase the “Priority Visa Service” while applying online. Or at least before you mail/submit your documents. This way your visa application will be processed within 5 working days.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE When I applied for my UK visa, the visa processing time was about 2 weeks. I had a planned trip to Canada before my trip to the UK. My trip to Canada was in 4 weeks, so I thought I had enough time to apply for my UK visa. However after I submitted my passport, the email confirmation said the visa process would take up to 4 weeks. I panicked. I went ahead and paid for the priority visa service. I panicked again. Then I emailed a formal visa withdrawal request, so I could at least get my passport back and make my trip to Canada. However, my visa was processed within 2 days of paying the priority visa service fee. Please do not make the same mistake as I did. Apply for your UK visa at least 2 months prior to your travel.

Visa application status tracking

Online visa application tracking is NOT AVAILABLE on the UK Visas and Immigration website. To track your UK visa application status, you must use UK Visas and Immigration’s email or phone option, which unfortunately is NOT FREE.

UKVI charges for all phone and email inquiries.

Below are UK Visa and Immigration phone, email details and charges.

PHONE Telephone: +44 2034811736 Available 24 hours from Monday to Friday Calls cost £1.37 per minute plus any international call charges

EMAIL Email communication must be initiated via Email UK Visas and Immigration Email inquiries cost £5.48. Follow-up emails after that are not charged. You will receive a response to your email within 2 working days.

You must give out your credit card information for billing when you start the phone inquiry. For email, you must fill out the payment form and then you can submit your email inquiry.

PERSONAL OPINION Email inquiries generally receive a standard response saying that your application is “in process”. Phone inquiries are slightly better and cheaper.

Priority visa service

If you would need to travel to the UK urgently, you can opt for the “Priority Visa Service”.  This service is expensive and may not be available in all countries. If available, you will see the option in your online UK visa application.

  • Priority visa service fee: £220 GBP
  • Visa processing time: Guaranteed in 5 working days

Priority visa service must be purchased during your online visa application. This will ensure your visa is processed within 5 days.

Purchasing this service after you have submitted/mailed your documents will take much longer than 5 working days. You must first pay the fee on the Visa Application Center (VAC) website and then email the receipt to the Visa Application Center where you have submitted/sent your documents. It can take more than a day for the VAC staff to locate your packet and push it into the priority queue

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I purchased my priority service after I had mailed my documents. My visa application was approved within two days of buying the priority visa service.

Super priority visa service

If you would need to travel to the UK immediately, you can opt for “Super Priority Visa Service”. This service comes with a hefty price tag, so purchase this service only in super urgent, emergency cases.

  • Super priority visa service fee: £956 GBP
  • Visa processing time: Guaranteed in 24 hours

Cancel your UK visa application

If you haven’t given your biometrics at the visa application center yet, you can cancel your UK visa application and get a full refund of your visa fee. The procedure to cancel your UK visa application depends on at what stage your application is in.

Application not submitted and fee not paid : If you haven’t paid your fee and haven’t submitted your application, there is a “Delete Application” option that will delete your current visa application.

Application not submitted but fee already paid : If you have already paid your fee and have not yet submitted your application, you can still delete your application but you may have to send a formal refund request in writing to the visa application center.

Application submitted, fee paid but haven’t given your biometrics : If you haven’t given your biometrics at VFS/BLS, you can cancel your application and request for a refund. The refunds take 4 weeks.

Application submitted, fee paid, biometric given , and documents/passport already submitted: If you have already given your biometrics and submitted your documents/passport, you CANNOT cancel your visa application anymore. You can only WITHDRAW your visa application. You must email the visa application center a formal withdrawal request. Upon receipt of the withdrawal request, the visa application center will return/mail your passport back. Any visa fee and priority service fee paid are not refundable.

IMPORTANT Even though UKVI says the refunds are processed in 4 weeks, it usually takes 8 weeks or even longer. There have been instances where applicants waited several weeks and some even gave up on their refunds. However, I have seen applicants having success in getting their refunds by reminding UKVI with phone calls or emails. It costs about $5 USD to email them, but it helps in getting your refund eventually.

Withdraw your UK visa application

The UK visa application center keeps the passport for the entirety of the visa process, which could be 3 weeks or more. There may be emergencies where you need to have your passport with you. The only way to request your passport back is by formally withdrawing your visa application.

If you withdraw your application, the visa fee and any priority service fee you have paid are NOT refundable.

To withdraw a visa application, you must submit a withdrawal request along with the reason for the withdrawal to the visa application center via email. It might take up to 72 hours for the consulate to locate your packet and send it back to you.

You must first call/email the UK Visas and Immigration mentioning your intention to withdraw your application. They will guide you through the process of withdrawing your application. Usually, the UK visa application withdrawal request should be a signed document with personal information including the GWF number. This document must be printed and signed. It must be scanned and emailed to the visa application center. Below is a sample withdrawal request letter.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hereby request to withdraw my UK visa application. I understand that the visa fee is non-refundable. I also understand that my package may not be shipped for up to 72 hours.

Full Name of the Applicant: <name> GWF Number: <GWF number> Date of Birth: <date of birth> Nationality: <Nationality> Country of Residence: <Country of residence> Passport number: <Passport number> Type of Visa Applied: General Visit (up to 6 months) Biometric taken date:  <biometric date> Visa application centre’s address:  <address of the visa application center where you have submitted your documents> Contact number of the applicant: <Your phone number>

Priority Service Paid: <YES/NO> Priority Service Paid On: <Priority service purchased date>

Reason for Withdrawal: Emergency international travel has been scheduled. I need to have my passport in order to travel. Please return my passport as soon as possible. Thank you!

<Your signature here> Signed: <Your full name> Date: <date>

IMPORTANT Cancellation or withdrawal is NOT a refusal. It WILL NOT affect your future UK visa applications. You don’t need to mention it in your future UK visa applications either.

ENTERING AND LEAVING THE UK

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GWF number in UK visa application ?

GWF reference number is the unique visa application number that was provided to you on your visa application submission. You must provide your GWF number when calling or emailing UK Visas and Immigration. Without the GWF number, UK Visas and Immigration will not be able to provide you with a status update on your visa application.

What to do if my UK visa application is refused?

If your UK visa application is refused, the first thing is to understand the  reasons for your UK visa refusal . If the reason is due to missing information, proof of funds or documentation, make sure to fix these the next time you apply for your UK visa.

Write a detailed cover letter explaining the reasons for your previous visa refusal, missing information/documentation and any additional information/documentation that you have provided in the new application. This will help the ECOs cut to the chase and focus on the new information/documentation.

There is no “appeal” for UK visa. So, re-apply for your UK visa by making sure you have the new information, proofs and documents that were lacking previously. You must pay the visa fee again as the fee paid for your previous application was non-refundable.

If you do not know the reason for your visa refusal/denial, give at least 6 months before you apply for the visa again.

Can I get my UK visa application fee refund if denied?

No. The visa fee and any priority service fee paid are non-refundable if your visa application is denied. The visa fee is also non-refundable in incidents where the visa is approved for less number of days than requested.

I’m planning to visit the UK and Schengen countries on a single trip. Should I apply for my UK visa first or Schengen visa first?

If you plan to visit the UK and Schengen countries on a single trip, ALWAYS apply for your UK visa first.

UKVI keeps the passport for the entirety of the visa process and there is no visa status tracking. Calls and emails to customer service are charged. Even if you pay and contact, you will usually get a canned response. If your UK visa is refused, there is no “appeal”. You can only re-apply, which means you have to repeat the entire process again.

On the other hand, the Schengen visa application process is much streamlined. There is application tracking, customer service and appeal.

I highly recommend applying for your UK visa first and get done with it. After that, apply for your Schengen visa.

When applying for your UK visa, show a “UK-only” itinerary for your UK visa. This eliminates the need for submitting your Schengen visa, flights in/out of the Schengen region, etc.

United Kingdom UK Tourist Visa Requirements - London Tower Bridge

The UK tourist visa requirements are clear and easy to understand. But, the visa application process is long and expensive. Apply at least 2 months in advance, and follow all the proper steps and documentation. Tourist visas are usually multiple-entry with 6 months validity.

Does UKVI have standard processing times for UK visa applications?

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has published service standards for waiting times for decisions on visa and immigration applications. If you want to track the status of a UK visa application then it is useful to refer to these.

If a UK visa application includes all relevant information and supporting documents (and the Home Office does not need to request further evidence or explanation) then the following waiting time customer service standards should apply:

  • Non-settlement visa applications submitted outside the UK: 90% to be decided within 3 weeks; 98% within 6 weeks and 100% within 12 weeks of the application date (where 1 week is 5 working days);
  • Settlement visa applications submitted outside the UK: 98.5% of settlement applications to be decided within 12 weeks of the application date and 100% within 24 weeks of the application date (where 1 week is 5 working days);
  • Applications for leave to remain submitted within the UK, including as spouses, workers and students: 8 weeks to be decided;
  • Applications for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) submitted within the UK: 6 months to be decided;
  • Applications for no time limit (NTL) submitted within the UK: 6 months to be decided;
  • Organisations seeking to sponsor a worker: 8 weeks;

  • The complexity of the case, for example if it involves an assessment of Article 8 ECHR rights or derivative rights of EEA extended family members;
  • Concerns regarding suitability requirements such as criminality;
  • Consideration of any adverse immigration history;
  • Any concerns regarding the authenticity of documents;
  • The volume of documents provided;
  • Whether further investigations are required or an interview scheduled;

UK Visas & Immigration offers a 'priority service' and a 'super priority service' for applicants who, for an additional fee, wish to receive a faster decision on their UK visa application.

Whether you use the VFS Global website, the TLScontact website, the UKVI website or the UKVI telephone enquiry lines, it's important to ensure that you have all the necessary information to hand before checking your status.

Remember to be patient, as processing times can vary depending on the type of visa you have applied for and the nature of your application.

UK Visa Application Status

Making an application to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) either overseas or from inside the UK can require you to make changes to your travel plans if there are unexpected delays or it takes longer to hear back. Decisions may take several months, and the need to submit your passport can cause problems. Traditionally, UKVI is not the easiest government department to contact, especially if your enquiry is urgent.

Our expert solicitors can help you to check your UK visa application status by guiding you to tools and resources, and by contacting UKVI or your visa application centre on your behalf. If there are problems with your application, we can help you to understand what went wrong and how you can rectify it.

For help with your UK visa status, call our team today on 0044 161 234 6800 (Manchester) or 0044 207 046 7185 (London), or fill out an online contact form and we will call you back at a time convenient for you.

Checking visa processing times

A simple online tool provides you with a quick way to find out how long your visa might take to be issued. Note this is a general guide, and a wide range of results can be returned depending on where you’re applying, and what type of visa you want.

Priority visa processing

This is offered by many visa issuing offices overseas, but not for all visa routes. It is a premium service, and costs can be high. For example, if you choose priority processing for a settlement application submitted from outside the UK, you can expect to pay around £573 on top of standard visa fees. The priority service was temporarily suspended for new family applications made from outside the UK; however, it is hoped that the service will be reintroduced.

Tracking your visa application

An online tool on the gov.uk website offers a couple of options, if you have submitted a visa application either in the UK or abroad, and are waiting for a decision. Unfortunately, when you click through the questions, it usually takes you to general contact information for the various UKVI departments. Phone numbers are provided, but beware: calling these numbers can be expensive, and when your call is answered, the information you receive is likely to be limited, often to the point of being no help at all. Spending time on hold to be told your application is “under consideration” is of little use to anyone.

The online visa status tool does return better results if you’ve applied for a UK visa from abroad. As well as taking you to a general enquiries phone number, the option of a paid email enquiry appears. The current cost is around £2.74, and a reply is promised within five working days. Our experience is that the paid email option (there is a paid call option also available, costing 69 pence per minute, which is less effective) allows your enquiry to reach the casework team dealing with your case, and can lead to a quicker decision if you have a good reason, e.g. a medical emergency requiring urgent travel.

UK Visa and Citizenship Application Service (UKVCAS)

For in-country visa applicants, processing options are delivered via the UKVCAS network . There are various UKVCAS service points located in town and cities and throughout the UK. All of the centre offer both free and chargeable appointments, although availability of the former can be limited in the smaller locations. The larger centres located in Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Cardiff, Belfast and Croydon tend to offer more free appointments.

Additional services offered by UKVCAS include express appointments, documentation checking, translation and interpretation, and an on-demand ‘Meet and Greet Plus’ service. Not all service points offer these services; details of the services on offer at the various locations can be found here .

A premium lounge located in central London is available offering high speed Wi-Fi and business facilities. Only chargeable appointments are offered by this centre.

Full details of the service, provided by UKVI’s commercial partner Sopra Steria can be found here .

Some applicants within the UK may instead be directed to a Service and Support Centre (SSC) to provide their biometrics. There are eight centres, located in Belfast, Cardiff, Croydon, Glasgow, Liverpool, Peterborough, Sheffield and Solihull. It is not possible to select whether to attend an SSC or UKVCAS appointment; which type of centre an applicant is required to attend will depend on the type of application submitted.

If you need assistance finding or accessing the visa application centre that is handling your visa application, our team can help you to do this and ensure that the process is being handled appropriately.

FAQs about checking your UK visa application status

Can i track my uk visa application status.

Tracking the status of your UK visa application is an essential aspect of the immigration process, providing reassurance and clarity on the progress of your application. In the UK, you have the option to track your visa application status using the tools provided by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). This facility is available to applicants both inside and outside the UK, ensuring consistent and accessible updates regardless of your location.

To track your UK visa application, you typically need your Global Web Form (GWF) number, which is assigned to you when you first submit your application. This GWF number is a unique identifier for your application and is essential for the UK visa tracking process. It’s important to keep this number secure and handy, as you will need it to access any updates about application status.

When you wish to track your visa application in the UK, you can do so by visiting the official UKVI website or the visa application centre where you submitted your application. The online tracking system usually requires you to input your GWF number and some personal information to authenticate your identity. Once logged in, you’ll be able to see the current status of your application, including any actions required from your side or updates on the decision-making process.

For those outside the UK, the process to track a visa application is similar. You’ll still need your GWF number and may access the UK visa application tracking system via the UKVI website or through the local visa application centre’s website, depending on your location. This online tracking service is designed to keep you informed about the progress of your application, reducing uncertainty and helping you plan your future steps accordingly.

It’s important to note that while the UK visa tracking system provides valuable information about the status of your application, it may not offer detailed updates on every stage of the application process. Therefore, it’s recommended to check the system regularly for any new information or wait for official communication from the UKVI regarding your application.

How long does it take for UKVI to make a decision?

The time it takes for the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to make a decision on an application varies depending on the type of visa. As of the latest update in September 2023, here are some indicative processing times for different categories of visas:

  • Visit Visa – approximately eight weeks.
  • Study Visa – approximately eight weeks.
  • Family visas – varied times depending on the specific visa type, ranging from eight weeks for partners, spouses and children, to six to eight months for certain partner/spouse and parent visas. Special schemes like the Homes for Ukraine, Ukraine Family Scheme and Ukraine Extension Scheme are processed as quickly as possible.
  • Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker visas – three weeks for Health and Care Worker visas and eight weeks for Skilled Worker visas. Temporary Work visas – generally eight weeks for various categories including Government Authorised Exchange, Charity Worker, Creative Worker, International Agreement and Religious Worker.
  • Work visas without a job offer – processing times range from three weeks for the India Young Professionals Scheme to eight weeks for other categories like Global Talent, Graduate, Overseas Domestic Work, High Potential Individual, and UK Ancestry.
  • Other visas and permits – these include visas like British National (Overseas) with a 12-week processing time, and others such as Entrepreneur, International Sportsperson, Investor, Minister of Religion, Scale-up Worker, Turkish Businessperson, and Turkish Worker with varied times ranging from eight weeks to six months.

It’s important to note that these times are indicative and can vary based on the volume of applications and other factors. In certain circumstances, such as inaccuracies in the application, the need for further evidence, verification of documents, interviews, or high visa demand, the UKVI application status may indicate a longer processing time.

What are the standard processing times for UK visa applications?

If you are applying for a UK visa while you are currently residing in the UK, you can expect the processing of your application to take approximately 12 weeks from when you attend your UKVCAS appointment or submit your individual visa application online.

If you are applying for a UK visa while you are residing outside of the UK, your application may take different amounts of time to process depending on which visa you are applying for. Work visas will typically take around 12 weeks to process, but visiting visas can typically take three weeks. To finish your visa application, you will need to attend a meeting at a visa application centre in the UK, so you should plan your travel around this.

Your visa application may take longer to process if there are issues with your application, or if there are children involved, as the UK government will want to be sure that you have the correct permissions to bring any children into the country.

How does the premium visa processing work?

When applying from within the UK, you may be able to have your visa application processed more quickly, either by the end of the next working day or within five working days. The five-day priority service costs an additional £500, while the next working day service is an extra £800. You can expect the relevant deadline to apply once you have either uploaded your identification documents to the UK Immigration: ID Check app or prove your identity at your UKVCAS appointment. Note that if biometrics are provided at a weekend or on a bank holiday, a decision to use the £800 service should be expected within the next two working days.

The two priority services can only be used in conjunction with certain applications; for example, only the £800 service can be purchased when making a partner application. Details can be found here of which type of applications are eligible for which priority service.

What can delay a visa application?

The most common reasons for visa applications to be delayed are due to the lack of required documents. In some cases, this can be fixed by simply providing the missing documents, but this can be more difficult if you do not have them. You may be required to book another appointment or submit your application all over again, also needing to pay the application fee.

Other reasons that a visa application can be delayed include:

  • Having a criminal conviction
  • There are children involved in your plans to move to the UK
  • Your supporting documents need to be verified
  • You are required to attend an interview online or at a visa application centre

What is the process of applying for a UK visa?

To apply for a UK visa, you should seek the help of a legal professional before making any decisions. It is essential that you do this as mistakes in the visa application process can be costly, and due to the complexity of UK immigration law and its requirements, you will struggle to navigate through successfully without a solicitor.

The application process for your visa will vary depending on the type of visa, as your unique circumstances must meet those required of the visa you are applying for, and you will be expected to provide different supporting documents and evidence. For example, if you are planning to move to the UK with children, you may need to secure visas for them, but you will not be required to provide the same level of identification as for yourself. Or, if you are planning to study in the UK, your chances of success will depend on the course and your qualifications.

Depending on your reasons for travel, you may need to provide:

  • Proof of your identity , including a passport, driving licence, national identity card or biometric residence permit
  • Financial proof that you will be able to support yourself and any dependants
  • Translations of any documents you provide that are in a language other than English or Welsh
  • A sponsorship letter detailing the relationship with your sponsor and how your sponsorship will work
  • Confirmation from your employer or educator that you will be working there and what your income will be, if you are paid
  • Biometric information
  • Confirmation of your legal residence and nationality
  • Invitations to any events that you are performing at
  • Details of any medical treatment you are having

This list is not comprehensive and you should speak with your solicitor to understand what you will need for your visa application.

You will also need to pay the right fee for your visa application. This will depend on how long you plan to stay in the UK and the type of visa you are applying for. You can find a breakdown of UK visa costs in this government resource .

Once you have gathered the necessary information, your solicitor will help you to submit it to the Home Office, after which you will begin the waiting period.

If your application is successful, you will receive confirmation, your date for travelling to the UK will be set and you will be expected to meet your requirements when it comes time to move. If your application is unsuccessful, you will be required to submit your application and pay the application fee again. Our team will work closely with you to ensure that you meet all of the eligibility requirements of your desired visa and that your application is sent with all the necessary documentation.

How long does it take to get a UK visa after submitting biometric information?

If you have submitted biometric information via the UKVI as part of your visa application, you can expect to wait approximately three weeks for your application to process. This specifically applies to visitor, tourist, work and student visas. For spouse, partner and family visas the processing time is typically around 12 weeks. This is because these visas usually last for a longer time and may lead to settlement, so the UKVI will need to be sure that your submitted information is correct.

The Ukraine crisis led to increased processing times across a number of routes, and family visa applications made from outside the UK have been taking up to six months to process. It does now appear that these processing times are reducing again, though some delays should still be expected.

Why is my UK visa application taking so long?

Applying for a visa is a complex process and varies on a case-by-case basis. Depending on the type of visa you are applying for and your own personal circumstances, your application may be more or less complicated, leading to differing processing times. Even in cases where your application may be simpler, the UK authorities must take their time to ensure that all of your necessary information is accounted for and is accurate.

If you are moving to the UK with dependents, such as children, there are a number of factors that can affect how long your application takes. For example, if you are a step-parent or single parent, the UK authorities will need to be sure that you have the permission of the children’s other biological parent to remove them from the country and bring them to the UK. This is just one example of how a visa can pose unique challenges that the authorities must navigate.

We will help you to track the progress of your visa and ensure that it is going according to plan. If there are any delays along the way, we will work with the relevant authorities to ensure these issues are resolved as quickly as possible.

Legal aspects of the UK visa status check: Your rights and obligations

Checking your UK Visa status is an important part of the immigration process when traveling to the UK, so you should be aware of certain rights and obligations.

Right to check UK Visa status: As an applicant, you have the right to check your UK Visa status at all times. This means there is a way to monitor the progress of your UK Visa application and know where it stands in the processing timeline.

Access to information: You have the right to access information related to your UK Visa application, including any decisions made by the immigration authorities. This information is usually provided through official channels such as websites or helplines.

Appeal and review rights: If your visa application is refused, you generally have the right to appeal or request a review of the decision, depending on the visa category and the specific grounds for refusal. These appeal rights can vary, so it's important to understand your options.

Obligations:

Provide accurate information: your legal obligation is to provide accurate and truthful information in your visa application. Misrepresentation or providing false information can lead to severe consequences, including visa refusal or even bans from future applications.

Follow visa conditions: Once you receive your visa, you must adhere to the specified conditions. This may include restrictions on work, study, or residency duration. Failing to comply with these conditions could result in visa cancellation or deportation.

Comply with immigration laws: You are legally obligated to comply with the immigration laws and regulations of the country where you are applying for a visa. This includes abiding by the visa application process and any requirements set by the immigration authorities.

Respect visa expiry dates: It's crucial to know your visa's expiry date and plan to leave the country before it expires or apply for an extension if allowed. Overstaying a visa severely violates immigration laws and can lead to penalties or future visa denials.

Report changes: If there are changes in your circumstances, such as a change of address or marital status, you are typically required to report these changes to the immigration authorities to keep your records accurate and up-to-date.

In the UK study visa requirements , there are ten important documents that is crucial for a successful application, let's take a closer look at them in the image below and further explore in-depth what a checklist includes:

UK Student Visa Document Checklist

  • Your passport
  • Proof of English Proficiency
  • Academic Transcripts
  • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
  • Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) Certificate
  • A valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your institution,
  • Financial Documents showing your ability to support yourself
  • Parental Consent Letter
  • Sponsor Letter
  • Tuberculosis Test Certificate

Make sure to gather all necessary documents to ensure a smooth visa application process.

1. Passport

You need to be in possession of a current, valid passport or other travel authorization. A blank page for the passport is required.

2. Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

One of the essential documents for a UK student visa from India is the CAS number, short for Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies . Issued by the UK institution you'll attend, this reference number confirms your unconditional admission to the course, crucial for the UK Visa and Immigration Office (UKVI) . Without it, no visa application is accepted. Make sure to include this vital detail in your UK student visa checklist to ensure a successful application process.

Points To Remember About CAS

  • After confirming enrollment and paying any required fees, you'll receive the CAS digitally from your university.
  • For multiple courses, a combined CAS is issued covering the entire study period. Valid for six months, it must be used for visa application within this timeframe.
  • The CAS is one-time use only and non-transferable; if reapplying, you'll need a new CAS.

How To Get Your CAS Number?

Once you've confirmed your acceptance into the program, the university applies to the UKVI, forwarding the CAS number to you. To obtain the CAS, you might need to submit documents like:

  • Degree certificates/transcripts
  • Proof of funds
  • Tuberculosis certificate
  • An ATAS certificate if applicable

3. Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) Certificate

For programs like Master of Science/technology, Indian students applying for UK study visas must include an ATAS certificate if indicated in their CAS or offer letter. This certificate, issued by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) , permits course pursuit. Applicants should apply online via the FCO website, where scheme details and subject lists are available. Ensure to add ATAS certificate application to your UK student visa checklist for completeness.

Points To Remember About ATAS

  • ATAS clearance, valid for 6 months, requires adequate planning due to potential processing times of 30 days or more.
  • Any changes in course content midway may necessitate new ATAS clearance.
  • Additionally, course or visa extensions beyond specified durations may require fresh ATAS clearance.

Ensure these details are accounted for in your UK student visa checklist for a smooth application process.

4. Academic Transcripts

When applying for a course, submit academic qualifications listed in your CAS, along with academic transcripts or certificates as proof. Original awards/certifications must display:

  • Your full name
  • Award/certification title
  • Institution name

Original transcripts should clearly state:

  • Course title
  • Confirmation of the award

While some countries are exempt from submitting certain documents, it's wise to keep all ready as per the UK immigration officer's discretion. Ensure these items are on your UK student visa checklist for thorough preparation.

Before you start your studies in the UK, you might want to know more about the Scholarship details to Study in the UK .

5. Biometric Residence Permit

A BRP isn't required for a UK student visa application but is necessary for stays exceeding 6 months. It serves as proof of legal residence and contains identity details, biometric data, immigration status, and eligibility for public benefits.

Obtainable within 10 days of arrival, it's collectible from either the university sponsor or a designated Post Office at your study location. Ensure to include BRP collection in your UK student visa document checklist for comprehensive preparation.

6. Tuberculosis Test Certificate

Indian students must obtain a TB screening certificate from an approved clinic/lab, valid for 6 months. This certificate, a requirement for a UK student visa application, confirms the absence of the disease. Ensure inclusion of this certificate in the documents required for a student visa in the UK from India.

7. English Language Proficiency Proof

The UKVI mandates proof of English language proficiency as part of the document checklist for a UK student visa from India. Your university's requirements, such as an IELTS scorecard, are included in your CAS. Ensure this English proficiency certificate or scorecard is part of your document checklist for a UK student visa.

8. Parental Consent Letter

If you are under 18, your document checklist for a UK student visa must include a consent letter from both parents or guardians, or the parent/guardian with sole legal responsibility. This letter should state their consent for your travel, study in the UK, and visa application, and specify your living arrangements. Additionally, include proof of their relationship to you as part of the documents required for a student visa to the UK.

9. Sponsor Letter

If you have received a government or international agency scholarship in the past year, your document checklist for a UK student visa must include a consent letter from the scholarship provider. Ensure this consent letter is part of your UK student visa checklist. For a comprehensive guide, refer to the UK student visa checklist.

10. Proof of Funds

The financial proof documents required for a student visa in the UK demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your stay and study in the UK. You need to show funds for the first academic year of your program and living expenses if you're traveling to the UK for the first time.

Accepted proofs of financial viability include:

  • Bank statements
  • Letters from bank authorities
  • Loan documents
  • Scholarship proof
