Visitors to the UAE whose visas are about to expire can extend their stay by up to 60 days if necessary.

Anyone who does not go through the proper procedures and stays beyond the validity of their visit visa will be subject to fines of Dh50 ($13.61) a day.

Visitors who stay beyond the time allowed without renewing their visas can also be arrested for staying in the country illegally. Inspection campaigns are regularly carried out to catch offenders.

Here The National explains how to avoid these fines by applying for a visa extension.

No more 'grace period'

Visitors to Dubai will no longer be granted a 10-day grace period when their tourist visa expires, so travel agents, The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) are urging visitors to apply for a 30-day extension visa before their original visa expires.

This extension can be applied for twice, resulting in an additional 60-day visit.

“People wishing to stay in the UAE after their visit visa expires should apply for a 30-day extension visa to stay legally in the country,” said an ICP call centre agent.

“They can apply for a second 30-day extension, maximum.”

More than 14 million people visited Dubai in 2022. Reuters

The authority encouraged visitors to arrange the extension in advance of the current visa expiring, and warned of the upper limit for number of days spent in the country.

“People should be aware that the total duration of stay within a year should not exceed 120 days,” the agent said.

How much does it cost?

According to the ICP website, the cost of extending a visit visa is Dh610.

However, according to Amer, an immigration service centre, the cost for an extension of a visa issued by GDRFA-Dubai is Dh800.

Fees can vary between Dh800 and Dh1,100 when applying through a travel agency.

Where do I go to get the extension?

“The 30-day extension visa can be issued by the same travel agency that issued the visa for the customer in the first place," said Roshan Davis, manager of Golden Talent Tourism Agency in Dubai.

Visitors who obtained a visa on arrival can apply for an extension via the ICP or GDRFA-Dubai websites, or customer service centres.

Anyone with a visa on arrival can also take their passport to Dubai airport immigration in the Terminal 3 arrival area, Mr Davis added.

What are the required documents?

Holders of a visit visa should send a copy of their original visa and passport to the travel agent for extension. They can also visit the ICP or GDRFA-Dubai website to apply for an extension and the visa will be extended within 48 hours.

The passport should have a validity of at least six months to apply for an extension.

For how many days can validity be extended?

The service allows visit visa holders to extend their visa for up to 60 days, in two applications of 30-day extensions.

Who is the tourist visa for?

Those who do not qualify for a visa on arrival or visa-free entry to the UAE can apply for a tourist visa.

Citizens from 69 countries and states are eligible for a visa on arrival in the UAE . Females below the age of 18 are not eligible to apply for a tourist visa unless they are travelling with their parents.

How can I apply for a tourist visa?

Visitors from countries that do not have a visa-on-arrival arrangement with the UAE can apply for their visas in advance through a travel agency or through the airline.

And I saw the news if they will waves the fines it’s confirmed ? Thank you for Your help

Hello Anto,

Thank you for reaching out. Don’t worry, the UAE government has announced a visa exemption for all types of visit visas expired during flight suspension so your nephew can stay in the UAE till the airports are closed without paying fine. It would be better for your nephew to stay till flight operations resume.

Are you already in UAE with a 30 day or 90 day visa? Are you contemplating staying longer in the UAE? If you answered yes to both these questions or if you are curious about a UAE visa Extension, this guide will prove helpful to you. Apart from explaining what is a UAE visa extension, it will also cover the procedure, give you an estimate of the price and more important details.

Table of Contents

What is a uae visa extension, who are prepaid visa nationals, when to apply for uae visit visa extension, procedure to extend uae visit visa, documents required.

How to Extend Visit Visa In UAE

A UAE visa extension is the name of the procedure that allows you to stay longer in the UAE by extending your current visa or doing a status change to a new visa that has been extended through the in country visa procedure. The UAE visa extension procedure is mostly used by prepaid visa nationals as they need to apply for a visa to stay in the UAE, unlike GCC nationals (who dont need a visa) or on arrival visa nationals. If you are a prepaid visa national this guide will break down the different procedures so that you can get a better idea.

Any nationals who don’t belong to GCC countries or on-arrival eligible countries are regarded as prepaid nationals and they need to apply for a UAE visit visa. If they want to stay longer they need to apply for UAE visit visa extension

It is better to apply a minimum of 5 days before your grace period is finishing which is the 95th or 35th day depending on the visa you initially applied for. You will be charged overstaying fines if your visa extension gets delayed.

If you need to stay longer in the UAE and want to extend your visa, you can go about it in any of the two ways mentioned below. You can choose either of the procedure based on your convenience and preference.

Procedure 1: Same Visa Extension

What is a same visa extension?

A same visa extension is when you extend the visa with which you entered UAE.

How many times can I extend my visa with this procedure?

You can extend your visa twice with this procedure. You will get 30 days with the first extension and 20 days with the second extension.

What is the procedure for this type of extension?

Contact the same visa provider from whom you got your UAE visit visa issued and they will help you from there.

What is the total duration I can stay in UAE with this procedure?

You can stay for a total of 90 days or 150 days depending on whether your initial visa was a 30 day or 90 day visa. Here is a breakdown to ease your confusion:

Procedure 2: In country visa

What is an in country visa?

Also known as an inside country visa or no-exit visa, this procedure makes visa extension easy because the applicant doesn’t have to exit UAE for the new extension to get activated.

How many times can I extend my visa with the in country procedure?

You can extend your visa as many times as you want with this procedure. There is no limit or restrictions

Contact Arabiers atleast 5 days before your grace period is over and submit the necessary documents digitally. You can choose between a 1 month or 3 month visa extension. Your visa extension will be sent for processing and when it is accepted the status change will happen. You will then get 40 days (30 days +10 day grace period) or 100 days(90 days +10 day grace period) extra to stay in UAE.

You will need to submit the copy of your initial visa, a clear passport size photo taken in a white background and a coloured digital copy of your passport details page.

How to Extend Visit Visa In UAE

The cost of extending your UAE visit visa may vary depending on the following:

  • Procedure you choose to extend the visa
  • The type of visa you choose for your extension (30 day visa or 90 day visa) Below is a rough estimate of the cost for each of the extension procedures so that you can easily plan your UAE visa extension budget.

Same visa extension

between 900 AED to 1000 AED (245 USD - 275 USD)

Incountry 30 days

between 1100 AED to 1200 AED (300 USD - 330 USD)

Incountry 90 days

between 1500 AED to 1600 AED (410 USD - 440 USD)

Frequently Asked

What is a grace period.

Grace period is the duration, usually 10 days, that is given as a safety measure within which the visa holder has to leave the UAE or extend their visa. Failure to do either can result in hefty overstaying fines.

What are the Overstaying Fines?

The fine for the first day of overstaying is 200 AED and 100 AED for every day overstayed from the second day. An additional service charge of 100 AED will be added while settling the fines during exit.

Most of the expats residing in the UAE travel frequently due to business and personal reasons, and do not stay in the country all throughout the year. Sometimes, these trips would last longer than six months, thereby affecting the validity of their residence visa.

If a UAE resident has stayed outside the Emirates for more than six months or 180 days, his/her residence visa will be automatically cancelled.

Here's how you can apply for a new entry permit to enter the UAE again:

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

Your sponsor has to apply through the following:

  • Register in the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDFRA) website using your email address
  • Log in through username.
  • Click 'Services'.
  • Click 'Issuance of a Residency Visa'.
  • Click 'Visa Issuance for Foreigners linked with Job Contract'.

Your sponsor can also apply for a new entry permit through the Customer happiness centre:

  • Get a ticket using the queue system
  • Submit the application fulfilling all conditions and documents to the customer service representative.
  • Pay service fees (if required).

Requirements

  • The application must be submitted from outside the country.
  • You can apply for this request after 180 days of staying outside the country.
  • You need to provide a valid reason to justify being outside the country for more than 180 days.
  • A fine of Dh100 will be charged for every 30 days or less that you spent outside the country. However, if you're a Dubai resident that has stayed outside the country for more than 180 days, you will only have to start paying for the days after your 180-day grace period is over.
  • The remaining period of your residence visa must be more than 30 days upon submitting the application.
  • If you're sponsored by an establishment, your application can be submitted either by you or by the establishment.
  • Fine fees can only be refunded if your application is rejected.
  • When your application is approved, you must enter the country within 30 days starting from the approval date.

Application fee

The fee for the new permit entry application is Dh200 and can go up to Dh420 if the permit was applied through customer happiness centres such as Amer. It is worth noting that the total amount of the fee may vary depending on your circumstances.

Fine exemption

If you have already exceeded 180 days outside the UAE, but the status of your residency is still showing as 'Active' and it has at least 30 days of validity, you will be exempted from paying the fines.

Check your residency status

While you're travelling, be it for business or pleasure, it is possible that checking the status of your residence visa may slip your mind. It's a good thing you can do it from the convenience of your phone or laptop.

  • Sign in with UAE Pass.
  • Once you're in the app, select the "Sponsored" option from the main page of the app, where you sill see if your visa is still active or not.
