Trek’s Latest Émonda ALR Is as Good as Aluminum Road Bikes Get

Dialed geometry, smooth welds, and an excellent ride feel add up to make the latest aluminum Émonda ALR a great alternative to pricier carbon bikes.

The Takeaway: The updated Trek Émonda ALR is thoroughly modern, yet simple and fully upgradable. Just the way an aluminum road bike should be.

Trek Émonda ALR 5

Émonda ALR 5

The Émonda ALR borrows its geometry (down to the millimeter) from its much pricier (and lighter weight) carbon fiber version of the Émonda. This means riders get the same, proven, race-winning geometry of the much pricier carbon model for around one thousand dollars less.

trek emonda alr

While the cost savings might be the most enticing feature of the ALR for many riders, the updated aluminum frame is the showstopper here. Much like its carbon version, the Émonda ALR features a mix of aerofoil (Kammtail) shaped tubes along with more traditional round profiles. Trek uses its 300 Series Alpha aluminum for the frame, which weighs in at 1,257 grams (claimed), for a painted size 56cm. It’s combined with a full carbon fork that adds 406g to the total package. This is impressive—weighing a mere 34g more than Trek’s carbon Émonda SL variant of the frame (which sells for $1,000 more than the ALR).

trek emonda alr

The Émonda ALR frame is also refreshingly free from proprietary standards. The bike uses a T47 threaded bottom bracket, a round 27.2mm diameter seatpost, and a completely normal handlebar and stem combination using a 31.8 bar clamp and 1-⅛ steer tube. All of these things make the Émonda ALR an easy-to-live-with bike that can be upgraded and customized as riders see fit.

trek emonda alr

Alloy-frame aficionados have divided opinions about the appearance of welds. Some prefer to see the handy work of the welder and how tidy they can make the welds, while others prefer not to see the welds at all. Fans of chunky welds will be disappointed as Trek employed its Invisible Weld Technology on the Émonda ALR. This technique creates an incredibly seamless look to the frame. At arm's length (and particularly with the black frame), riders can easily mistake the Émonda ALR for a pricier carbon bike.

Another big change is at the Émonda’s front end. Trek implemented an integrated cable routing setup that’s very similar to the style used on the Allez Sprint. This setup sees the cable housing and brake hoses run externally along the bar and stem and then enter the frame through the top headset bearing. This kind of integration has the advantage of allowing riders to easily swap stem lengths or handlebars while still achieving a rather clean-looking cockpit. While Trek avoids the major headaches of cockpit customization with this cable routing solution, like many other recent road and gravel bikes, it suffers the added complexity and expense of routine service (such as replacing cables and housing or servicing headset bearings).

trek emonda alr

Unlike high-end bikes with electronic shifting—since the Émonda ALR is only sold with mechanical shifting—there are double the cables routing through the headset. Bikes with similar routing often face more rapid deterioration in shift performance (compared to bikes where things are routed externally) due to the tight bends the derailleur housing must make to fit into the space. It makes replacing cables and housing a major headache and costly if you’re not doing it yourself.

According to Cadence Cycling Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, replacing a single-shift cable on a bike with through the headset routing can cost as much as $200 in labor. This is because shops tend to charge for this work by the hour and the time it takes to complete this service varies based on how complicated fishing the housing and cable is through the frame. To perform the same repair on a bike with externally routed cables, I was quoted a flat $25 labor charge.

Fit and Geometry

The Émonda ALR features the same H1.5 geometry that Trek uses on its Émonda and Madone carbon models. This geometry splits the difference between the aggressive H1 fit and the more relaxed H2 version. Meaning that a majority of riders should be able to find a good riding position regardless of whether they want to be long and low or more upright.

trek emonda alr

Additionally, Trek offers the Émonda ALR in a whopping eight sizes. The smallest size 47cm frame should be good for riders as short as 5’0”, and the largest size 62cm fits riders up to 6’5”, according to Trek.

The ALR Build

Trek currently offers only one complete bike Émonda ALR build. It features Shimano’s excellent 105 11-speed mechanical groupset, along with a Bontrager alloy bar, stem, and seatpost. Rounding things out is a pair of Bontrager alloy Paradigm SL wheels, which are very traditional with round J-bend spokes laced 2x but feature a 21mm internal width and are tubeless-ready. However, riders need to purchase the necessary items to turn them into tubeless wheels (including tubeless-specific tires, valves, and sealant).

trek emonda alr

Trek prices the Émonda ALR at $2,300 for the complete bike and $1,200 for the frameset.

Trek confirmed that the Émonda ALR will receive an update to 12-speed 105 in the near future. Unfortunately, Trek representatives have not told us how much it will cost or the complete specification list. (But for reference, a 12-speed 105-equipped Domane AL 5 sells for $2,000)

Ride Impressions

Aluminum road bikes often have a reputation for being overly stiff, harsh, and cheap (in a bad way). However, these traits are generally not found on modern and well-engineered aluminum frames. (And it’s such a pervasive stereotype that my colleague Matt Phillips wrote a whole column about it .)

trek emonda alr

While some bikes lean into aspects of that reputation (the Allez Sprint is an unapologetically stiff-as-hell criterium racing machine), the Émonda ALR takes a slightly different approach. Since it’s modeled after the carbon Émonda (a bike largely intended to win mountain stages in Grand Tour races), the ALR is designed with all-day comfort in mind. This makes the overall ride more relaxed and comfortable compared to the Allez Sprint and should be a plus for many riders.

Even if some might consider 11-speed 105 outdated (due to the recent launch of the 12-speed 105 R7100 components ), Shimano’s 105 R7000-series drivetrain is an excellent and well-proven groupset. The 11-speed group has precise and crisp shifting front and rear and also impresses with powerful braking at the wheels and excellent control of the levers.

trek emonda alr

In contrast, the most disappointing part of the Émonda ALR’s build kit is its tires. Which would be the absolute first thing I upgrade. The Bontrager R1 wire-bead road tires weigh 360g per tire and are very much included to help meet the Émonda’s price point. They make the bike feel sluggish in a straight line while also not helping to foster any cornering confidence. A swap to even a mid-range tire from any of the major tire brands will probably drop around 30-40g of rotating weight per wheel and dramatically improve the ride quality of the bike.

trek emonda alr

I found the rest of the ALR’s Bontrager finishing kit perfectly serviceable. The seatpost, stem, and saddle were nothing flashy but did the job. The handlebar has a rather classic feeling bend, drop, and reach. Best of all, if any of these stock items don’t work for you, it’s simple to swap any of them out for a preferred version.

Out of the box, I found the Émonda’s ride quality quite good but perhaps a bit on the firm side. Lowering the tire pressure to around 68-72 psi range greatly improved the comfort. And once I swapped to a set of Continental GP5000 tires, the Émonda ALR really began to shine on the road.

trek emonda alr

There’s nothing gimmicky about the Émonda ALR. It’s a classic road bike in the simplest sense of the term. Riding it for the first time felt familiar and reassuring. The geometry didn’t require me to adjust to the bike—I could just get on and go. Even on that first ride, I felt like I could dive into corners with the assurance of knowing what the Émonda ALR would do when I leaned in. The geometry was a perfect mix of stability and responsiveness with a dash of that springiness that good metal bikes have.

On flat and rolling terrain, the Émonda ALR is right up there with almost any non-aero road bike of the last few years. Its dialed geometry makes it a pleasure to descend on, and the frame has the right snap to be a truly wonderful climber.

What holds the ALR back on the uphills, though, are the stock wheels. At 1,800 grams, they’re not as heavy as some wheels on bikes in this price range, but they just feel soft and unresponsive. After upgrading the tires, a new set of wheels would be my next purchase for the Émonda ALR.

One aspect of the Émonda ALR that feels a bit dated for a road bike made in 2023: Trek caps the bike’s maximum tire clearance at 28mm. In practice, there is enough room to comfortably run 30 or even 32mm tires (depending on the tire and rim combination). Still, I would feel better with a bit more official wiggle room, especially as it’s gotten harder to predict the measured width of various tire and rim combinations.

trek emonda alr

Overall, the Émonda ALR gets way more things right than it does wrong. While it's easy to nitpick things like its tires and wheels, Trek uses these parts to get the Émonda ALR to its modest price. And the ALR is up there with some of the best aluminum race bikes. It’s an impeccably finished and thoroughly well-designed aluminum bike that’s only a few grams heavier than its mid-tier carbon version. Plus, the Émonda ALR shares geometry with its pricier siblings and uses no proprietary standards or parts. With the ALR, Trek made a bike that nails all the things that have always made me love aluminum race bikes.

First Look: Trek Émonda ALR: Aluminum, aero, and light

Third generation frameset includes many features from carbon versions.

trek emonda alr 6 2023

On Thursday, Trek officially launched the latest version of its Émonda ALR, which was already available in Europe on April 6, to cyclists in US and Canada. The new aluminum frameset is strikingly similar to Trek’s carbon Émonda, featuring integrated cables and truncated airfoil tubes. It’s also share the same H1.5 geometry, so it’s aimed at racers. The current versions of Émondas SLR and SL have been around since 2020, and the latest version ALR aims to deliver much of the same attributes that have been seen in the pro peloton, but at a much more affordable price.

trek emonda alr 6 2023

My test bike, the Emonda ALR Frameset, was custom built with Shimano 105 Di2 and outfitted with Pro components since it will serve as the test bed for a long term review of Shimano’s latest electronic groupset. Same as previous years, the latest 105 received trickle-down tech from its big brothers Dura-Ace and Ultegra, including disc brakes and electronic shifting for the first time. Much like the Emonda ALR, it mimics its higher priced sibling to an impressively high degree, at a significant lower cost. In Canada, the Emonda ALR will also be available in a stock build with complete Shimano 105 mechanical, if building from the frame up is not your thing.

trek emonda alr 6 2023

A real looker

First off, I have to talk about the paint job of the ride that I am testing. It’s a stunning white with multiple colours on the logos. But each flourish actually means something. According to Trek, it’s a celebration of the company’s many successes on the road. “The paint job on the Emonda ALR Frameset is inspired by a previous P1 paint scheme called Palmares,” Trek’s Canadian marketing manager, Taylor Cook explains. “The Palmarès paint scheme is made up of quilt-inspired depictions of iconic team kits and champion jerseys from Trek’s vast history of sponsorships and race victories.”

trek emonda alr 6 2023

It’s quite stunning and will definitely stand out when you show up to a race. The paint scheme isn’t just on the down and top tubes–you can see little hints on the inside of the fork.

Comfortable cockpit

My test ride is fully Shimano. The 105 groupset was matched with Pro Vibe handlebars and stem. It’s not an integrated bar and stem which is nice, as you’re not beholden to whatever length and width stem and bar that the bike is shipped with. The Pro Vibe bars felt great. I tend to ride on the hoods a lot, but one of my pet peeves with some handlebars is the length. I like to have a decent amount of real estate after the hooks, and the Pro Vibes had just that.

trek emonda alr 6 2023

Fast and light

Trek says that the Émonda ALR is its lightest alloy road bike yet, built with 300 Series Alpha Aluminium, the full bike as built comes in at 8.80 kg. Just like its carbon predecessors, it is built with truncated airfoil tubes. So not only does it slice into the wind, but it makes for a lightweight bike when it gets hilly. When I took it out on some of the local climbs here, I immediately noticed the weight savings, but there was no compromise when it came to stiffness or handling. Having ridden several carbon bikes before, including the carbon versions of this frame, that was my initial concern. But after that first ride, it’s responsiveness when I’m out of the saddle, sprinting, or cornering, mirrors it’s carbon siblings. Since it comes with the same H1.5 race geometry, that’s not surprising.

trek emonda alr 6 2023

Other aero features include integrated cables, which are practically de rigueur these days. But with Trek’s set up, you aren’t tied to a proprietary setup, nor are you forced to use electronic drivetrains, the Emonda ALR is mechanical shifting compatible. This flexibility paid off with my fit, I actually used a shorter stem on this build than some of my other bikes, but when I was doing the “look at yourself in the store window thing” that we all do when riding (come on, you do it too) and my back was flat and positioning was great.

105 goes electric

The shifting is crisp, clean and precise. Since this was ridden in the spring, I had been using my winter bike before this test, which has mechanical Dura-Ace. One thing that did take me a few days to remember is that the larger paddle clicks down, and the smaller goes up. It’s just a quick adjustment if you’ve been using mechanical STI before, but it may take a few rides to get used to.

I tested braking down some local descents and around a few race courses, and the modulation felt just as exact as Dura-Ace or Ultegra. It’s a nice-looking group as well. All black, which creates a sleek and stunning aesthetic. One of the big differences between 105 12 speed and Dura-Ace or Ultegra is you can’t use the satellite buttons that are so popular. For me personally, that’s not a problem, but if you rely on the extra shifters on other parts of your bars you may be disappointed. There’s also no power meter available, which for me was also not a concern as I have pedals that measure my watts. But it’s something to think about.

trek emonda alr 6 2023

Weight-wise, the group comes in at 2,992 g, compared to Dura-Ace which is 2,514 g. But if you’re wanting value in an electric groupset, with disc brakes, the new 105 will certainly achieve this. I should note, that the Emonda ALR 6, that is equipped with 105 Di2, is not coming to North America, there will just be the one Emonda ALR 5 with 105 mechanical.

trek emonda alr 6 2023

As far as the rest of the components on my test ride, the Pro Vibe alloy seatpost does its job while keeping things light. The Shimano C46 Tubeless WH-RS710-C46-TL-R wheels are fast and responsive, and do the trick. My hoops came with 28mm Schwalbe Pro One tires, which are grippy and fast, but seem wider, which isn’t a bad thing.

trek emonda alr 6 2023

Good bye creaks

The Émonda ALR uses a threaded T47 bottom bracket. Trek says the move from press fit BBs will all but eliminate creaking.

Meant to be raced on

This is a bike that is meant for going fast. Unlike say, the Trek Domane SLR, there are no mudguard mounts or integrated frame storage. The official max tire clearance is 28 mm, but I will say Trek is being pretty conservative, and it will easily clear 30mm tires comfortably, and even larger depending on your comfort with clearance.

If you’re in the market for a bike that has all the qualities of a high-end racing machine, but at an affordable price, check out the new Trek Émonda ALR. The ALR 5 are available in Canada now, in an Azure/Coal colourway, and Black. The The Palmarès is available in Canada as frame only.

They are available to order now through your local Trek retailer. Select colors and sizes are in stock for purchase on trekbikes.com as well.

New aluminium Trek Émonda ALR gets aero tubing, hidden cables and moves to threaded bottom bracket

Aluminium bike uses Trek’s H1.5 geometry and features Kammtail tubing

Jack Luke / Our Media

Stan Portus

Trek has announced the third generation of its Émonda ALR, said to be the brand’s lightest alloy road bike and “highest-value road race bike”.

The new Émonda ALR frameset includes features found on Trek’s carbon road bikes, including Kammtail tube profiles and integrated cables, and uses the same racing geometry.

In keeping with its other new bikes, Trek moves from the press-fit bottom bracket seen on the previous Émonda ALR to a threaded T47 bottom bracket.

The bike will be available as a frameset and in two builds, the ALR 5 and ALR 6.

The ALR 5 features a mechanical Shimano 105 groupset and will cost £2,325/$2,300.

The ALR 6 uses Shimano’s latest 12-speed Shimano 105 R7150 Di2 electronic groupset and costs £3,150 (US pricing to be confirmed).

The announcement also comes with the news Trek has discontinued the Trek Émonda ALR 4 and rim brake-specific Émonda ALR frameset, meaning the range is now disc brake only.

Lighter, faster

2023 Trek Emonda ALR 5 aluminium road bike.

Trek says the new Émonda ALR is its lightest aluminium road bike .

Trek says the painted frame (in an unspecified size) weighs a claimed 1,257g and the carbon fibre fork weighs a claimed 406g, totalling 1,663g.

At launch, the 2019 Trek Émonda ALR frame and fork were said to weigh a claimed 1,481g, but the figures Trek provided at the time were for an unpainted frame and fork.

As a complete build, the Trek Émonda ALR 5 weighs a claimed 9kg and the ALR 6 weighs a claimed 8.8kg.

2023 Trek Emonda ALR 5 aluminium road bikerear drop out.

The Émonda ALR is made from “ultra-light” – in Trek's words – 300 Series Alpha Aluminium.

It features Trek’s Invisible Weld technology to give the frame a carbon-like finish. We've received the ALR 5 to review and the lines are, indeed, very clean.

Trek Emonda ALR 5 head tube.

The bike has Kammtail aero tube shaping and integrated cables and housing, which are said to improve the aerodynamics of the new ALR over its predecessor.

No watt savings versus the outgoing bike are supplied by Trek.

2023 Trek Emonda ALR 5 aluminium road bike front view showing headset cable routing.

The cables and hoses run from the handlebar and into the frame via a port at the top of the headset, similar to the design on the Specialized Allez Sprint Comp .

The cockpit itself continues to be a two-piece affair, with a separate handlebar and stem. The Émonda is not compatible with the Trek Madone's one-piece cockpit.

28c tyre clearance and no mudguard mounts

2023 Trek Emonda ALR 5 aluminium road bike with Bontrager tyre.

The integrated cable routing signifies Trek's racy intentions for this bike and that continues with the absence of mudguard/fender mounts.

Trek says the Émonda forgoes mudguard eyelets in order to keep things "light, stiff and simple".

We'd certainly argue that adding four eyelets wouldn't sacrifice any of those, and would, in turn, increase the Émonda's appeal as a year-round road bike – but you can, of course, still fit clip-on mudguards.

Maximum tyre clearance is stated as 28c (that still leaves a decent amount of clearance between the tyres and the frame).

Both bikes are equipped with 28c tyres out of the box, fitted with inner tubes . "Tubeless ready-tyres, rim strips, sealant and valve stems must be purchased separately to make the conversion to tubeless," Trek says.

Bye, bye, press-fit (Press-fit, bye, bye)

Trek Emonda ALR 5 drivetrain Shimano 105 mechanical.

The previous Émonda ALR used a BB86 bottom bracket, but the new version uses a threaded T47 bottom bracket .

Launched in 2015, the T47 bottom bracket was a collaboration between Chris King and Argonaut cycles designed to minimise the creaking associated with PF30 bottom brackets.

Trek adopted the standard in 2020 with the Crocket cyclocross bike and it appeared on the 2021 carbon fibre Trek Émonda and 2023 Trek Domane .

It’s little surprise, then, to see the new Émonda ALR switch to the standard, even if some will contend press-fits are better .

H1.5 geometry

The Émonda ALR has the same H1.5 geometry as the carbon Émonda and Domane.

Trek says this geometry is “race-specific” and positions you in the “right position for power while minimising aero losses”.

When reviewing the Émonda SL 6 eTap , Warren Rossiter said the H1.5 geometry “occupies the sweet spot between Trek’s slammed H1 fit, aimed at pros, and the H2 fit, found on the Domane endurance bike”.

New saddle and stem

Trek Emonda ALR with RCS stem.

The new Émonda ALR 5 and 6 feature a new stem and saddle from Trek’s component sub-brand, Bontrager.

The Verse is a short-nose saddle , which comes in a 142mm width.

The RCS Pro stem on the ALR 6 has a -7-degree angle and is 100mm long.

Trek Émonda ALR specs and prices

The Trek Émonda ALR will be available in two complete builds with Bontrager components and either Shimano 105 Di2 R7150 or Shimano 105 R7000 .

It will also be available as a frameset.

Is Trek’s new road bike really aluminium? Updated Émonda ALR features new frame with Kammtail aero tubing and fully integrated cables

Is Trek’s new road bike really aluminium? Updated Émonda ALR features new frame with Kammtail aero tubing and fully integrated cables

Trek has released an updated version of its Émonda ALR aluminium road bike that features a new frame with Kammtail aero tubing, a revised geometry, and fully integrated cables. Oh, and there’s a threaded bottom bracket too.

“The third-generation Émonda ALR was built with incredibly light and strong Alpha Aluminium, a race-specific geometry and a completely redesigned frame that helps riders fly up climbs, across flats and through the finish line,” says Trek.

2023 Trek ALR 5 - 1.jpeg

As previously, the Émonda ALR features an “ultra-light and durable” 300 Series Alpha Aluminium frame that’s made with what Trek calls Invisible Weld technology. Okay, ‘invisible’ might be pushing it but the welds are certainly inconspicuous at first glance. The ones at the bottom of the seatstays are noticeable if you go looking, as are the ones around the bottom bracket, but the head tube and seat tube junctions look almost like carbon, which is plainly the impression that Trek is shooting for.

“The Émonda ALR has evolved to include the same race-winning features as its more expensive carbon counterparts, including Kammtail aero tube shaping and integrated cables and housing that provide an aero boost over the previous model,” says Trek.

2023 Trek ALR 5 - 4 (1).jpeg

It’s the down tube that has the Kammtail shaping, broad with a squared-off back end.

One other big difference from the previous model is that there’s no port for cable routing at the top of the down tube. Instead, the gear cables and brake hoses (both new models are equipped with hydraulic disc brakes) run close to the stem before entering the frame via holes in the headset bearing cover at the top of the head tube.

The front derailleur cable, rear derailleur cable and rear brake hose all emerge just in front of the bottom bracket, the latter two ducking inside again at the bottom of the BB shell and heading for their respective components.

2023 Trek ALR 5 - 3 (1).jpeg

Trek has moved the ALR bikes from its H2 fit to H1.5. Back in ye olden dayes, Trek gave you the option of an aggressive H1 fit or a more relaxed H2 fit on its performance-focused road bikes. Now it has split the difference with H1.5 which is what you’ll find on both Madones and carbon Émondas too. Trek calls this “an optimised race-specific geometry [that] puts riders in the right position for power while minimising aero losses”.

2023 Trek ALR 5 - 1 (2)

Trek has been gradually sidelining press-fit bottom brackets and the new Émonda ALR is the latest to switch to a threaded T47 design. Some frames and press-fit BBs work together perfectly well but the move back towards threaded components will please anyone who has ever suffered squeaks and creaks.

2023 Trek ALR 5 - 2.jpeg

The wheels are tubeless-compatible, but the Émonda ALR is sold with with standard inner tubes and non-tubeless-compatible tyres and rim strips. The maximum tyre size the frame and fork will take is 28mm. You don’t get mudguard mounts here.

Trek claims a weight of 1,257g for the frame (size not specified) and 406g for the fork.

Two models are available:

Trek Émonda ALR 6, £3,150 Groupset Shimano 105 Di2 R7150 12-speed Wheels Bontrager Paradigm Comp Claimed weight 8.80kg

Trek Émonda ALR 5, £2,325 Groupset Shimano 105 R7000 11-speed Wheels Bontrager Paradigm SL Claimed weight 8.80kg

Trek Émonda ALR frameset, £1,300

It looks so similar to my 2014 Madone 5.2.

FFS. Why are journalists so preoccupied with threaded bloody bottom brackets? It's almost as if they're being paid to say it...

Maybe it's because people reading the article might be interested.

It's a bad habit several high profile brands have got into; specifying tubeless rims and then putting non tubeless tyres on. If you wish to run tubeless then it's another £100 or so straight off, I can't imagine that it would cost a manufacturer anything to put tubeless ready tyres on from the off.

Very nice looking bike

Very tasty.

They've turned the Emonda ALR into a porker. I managed to get my 2018 rim brake ALR6 down to sub 7kg with a bit of weight weenie bling. I've still got it, still ride it and still love it.

I liked the ALR6 pro version a few years back, mec Ultegra and some nice carbon wheels,  It was if I remember about 8kg all for about £2300. Is this the 2023 bike, progress??

60kg lean keen climbing machine wrote: I liked the ALR6 pro version a few years back, mec Ultegra and some nice carbon wheels,  It was if I remember about 8kg all for about £2300. Is this the 2023 bike, progress??

Aero trumps weight when it comes to efficiency/performance, so if the bike is indeed aerodynamically more efficient, the answer is yes, unless you're into (very steep) hill climbing and don't care about efficiency/performance anywhere else.

Based on their username, I guess they are into hill climbing...

More seriously, isn't the Emonda meant to be Trek's light bike for hill climbing? If you want aero, surely you'd buy the Madone?

The pro had 40mm deep carbon wheels, quesion is what is better, areo frame or areo wheels?  Both would be best but on these 2023 bikes they are shiped with shallow alloy wheels and areo frame???  All a bit odd and and at a price point vs spec, that only a few years ago would seem just bonkers!!!

I think they're taking the michael with those prices for ally bikes. Corporate profits seems to be the order of the day. No thanks.

Bit surprised the mechanical 105 version is that heavy.  Some deliberate choices so as not to embarrass it's stablemate?

I thought I'd have a quick look to see what component differences there were and was suprised to see it might actually be worse than that - Trek's website lists the weight of the ALR5 as 9.00kg.

As far as I can tell*, 105 Di2 (R7100) is ~ 500g heavier than the mechanical 105 (R7020). Which means the other component choices are making ~700g difference!

I haven't been through all the components individually to work it out, but I am also suprised that there is such a significant difference. The components are broadly very similar - the ALR6 tends to use a marginally higher spec but still pretty much all alloy rather than carbon, including things like wheels (where big savings could be made).

* This page lists claimed weight for all Shimano groupsets and so is hopefully a fair comparison. Obviously each groupset has a number of options (different casette sizes etc.) with different weights, and sometimes claimed weights do not always match actual weights measured by reviewers! What's included in the total weight can also differ - e.g. are cables included? Bottom bracket?

Well, If you were to buy an Emonda SL5 fitted with the same 105 mechanical that bike come in at a hefty 9.1kg ( https://road.cc/content/review/trek-emonda-sl-5-disc-291965 ) . So is Treks OCLV 500 carbon that good after all? I have an Emonda SLR which weighs in at bang on 7kg but thats made of the much lighter OCLV 800. .

I would like to see how light this could be with the right components on it. With a claimed frame weight of under 1300g sub 7kg should be achievable and then it would be a serious contender against much more expensive carbon fibre frames. Maybe even the current SLR which has got ridiculously expensive since I got mine.

Update: Looking at Treks Website, their 'official' weights are :-

Emonda SL5 -  8.87kg RRP £3.250.00

Emonda ALR5  - 9.00kg RRP £2.325.00

Or even better the  ALR6 with 12sp 105 Di2 is both lighter and still cheaper than the SL5!

That really is a no brainer for anyone looking for a reasonably mid priced bike. The ALR is so much better value. Just think what it would be like with Ultegra Di2 and Bontrager Aeolus Pro wheels instead.

It's even more stark if you just look at the framesets:

Emonda SL Disc Frameset weighs 1,245g (frame) + 384g (fork) and costs £2,950 ( source ).

Emonda ALR Frameset weighs 1,257g (frame) + 406g (fork) and costs £1,300. (source: this article - the new ALR Frameset is not yet listed on Trek's website).

So with the SL, you're paying an extra £1,650 to shave 34g off the weight.

'It's an incredible update from Trek.'

'The updated Emonda packs one hell of a punch, and Trek has a winner on its hands. The integrated cockpit is nice and all, but the real win is the H1.5 fit, which makes the Emonda feel more stable while maintaining the aggression and responsiveness of previous Emondas. That, coupled with a lightweight construction, comfortable ride and aerodynamic shaping, brings Trek's top-of-the-line climber from a very good bike to an excellent one.'

'The Emonda is still light, and it’s still stiff, but now there’s an extra dose of free speed.'

'Overall, Trek has done a solid job here of updating the Emonda, infusing meaningful improvements in several key areas, but without breaking the basic formula that has made the bike so popular.'
