National News | Vermont police stage mock mass shooting during high school field trip

Burlington Police Department (Google)

The ordeal terrorized the students and even left some injured, according to local outlet Seven Days.

The incident took place Wednesday at the Burlington police station as roughly 20 students were watching a presentation on how detectives solve crimes, when suddenly they heard screams from behind them.

A masked gunman then burst into the room and started firing fake rounds, leading the teens to duck for cover as loud gunshot noises filled the room.

The students said they were not told about drill beforehand.

“I’m shaking and crying because I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I’m gonna get shot.’ It felt so real,” one Burlington High School student told Seven Days, adding that she texted her mother, believing she was on the verge of being killed.

Another student scraped her knee while diving for cover.

The students said they eventually realized the incident was fake when they noticed the cops in the room weren’t trying to stop the shooter.

In an email sent to parents, teachers said they didn’t know the drill would happen abruptly without warning. They added the officers had assured them they’d performed the drill — which they wanted to be “as realistic as possible” — before with college students and adults.

“The detectives did apologize after they realized that the reenactment did not translate well to high school students,” the teachers wrote.

On Thursday, the police department told Seven Days the “realistic demonstration” was meant to depict a robbery scenario and be part of a lesson on witness fallibility. They added the school district had approved the drill ahead of time.

However, the department apologized to any students “who were upset by the specific scenario and crime scene portion of the presentation.”

“I’m baffled,” one outraged mother told the outlet. “It is a very real threat to kids these days to have a school shooting.”

National politics | anti-trump chicken makes scenic bay trip as ex-president’s supporters rally in san francisco, high winds nearly cancel planned trip for 33-foot-tall inflatable sculpture.

trip hazard cartoon

As Donald Trump arrived in the Bay Area on Thursday for the fundraising event with local tech billionaires, the 33-foot-tall “Trump Chicken” balloon — done up with a golden comb-over and thick eyebrows — sported a black-and-white striped inmate’s jumpsuit on a trip through the waters of the San Francisco Bay near San Francisco’s Marina Green.  The poultry “prisoner” was meant to draw attention to the former president’s recent criminal conviction.

The inflatable fledgling briefly paraded around Pier 39 before making a run for the Golden Gate Bridge, skirting past Crissy Fields and the Palace of Fine Arts before circling back near the Trump supporters at Marina Green and heading into the nearby harbor.

Danelle Morton, who calls herself the “head chicken tender,” had said earlier  Thursday that her attempts to inflate the chicken were largely scuttled by stronger-than-expected winds across the bay. The chicken was unable to stay inflated in winds over 20 mph.

trip hazard cartoon

With gusts topping 25 mph, Morton said she had “a hard time getting the chicken up on his feet.”

In the hours leading up to a fundraiser that was expected to net millions of dollars, hundreds of Trump supporters gathered near Marina Green, chanting “four more years” as a show of support. People waived flags proclaiming, “California for Trump,” “Take America back,” and “make votes count again.

One man draped himself in an American flag, while numerous others wore American flag-themed pants and shirts.

Dressed in an Uncle Sam outfit, former San Pablo Mayor Rich Kinney lauded Trump’s bravery and “courage” for coming to San Francisco and the reliably-blue Bay Area.

“It’s a hopeful sign that there’s some semblance of freedom,” said Kinney, adding that “him coming really encourages all of the patriots.”

Attendees of Trump’s fundraiser paid as much as $300,000 for dinner for a single person or $500,000 for a couple. It was hosted by tech billionaire David Sacks, his wife Jacqueline Sacks and venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya.

“We are amazed that they’re holding a multimillion dollar fundraiser for [Trump] after he’s been convicted of 34 felonies,” Morton, the Trump-chicken wrangler, said in an earlier interview. “Should a criminal really run the country? Somebody needs to stand up and say no.”

Many motorists, including a San Francisco Fire Department truck, honked while passing the crowd. Some played Trump-themed songs, including one proclaiming “Trump won and we know it,” while another hurled invective at the gathering.

San Francisco police Lt. Andy Meehan estimated the crowd at 250 to 300 people.

One man, wearing an oversized cutout of Trump’s face atop his own and giving his name only as “Gary,” said he showed up because of “the state of our freaking country.”

Trump’s visit comes a week after a jury of 12 New Yorkers convicted the former president of 34 felony counts related to hush-money payments during to his bid for the White House in 2016. At the rally, supporters of Trump decried the verdict as a degradation of the nation’s legal system.

“I cried,” said Mark Zulim, 64, of Oakland. “It’s lawfare — lawfare is being used against Trump.”

“I see it as the elimination of a candidate” that millions of Americans support, Zulim added. “They’re using lawfare to take my rights away as an American citizen.”

One of those few anti-Trump protesters, Cynthia Frybarger, gazed at the crowd of people waving flags in support of the former president and shook her head.

“Maybe they’ll do some fact-checking on who they’re supporting,” said Frybarger, 73, of San Jose. “He’s an embarrassment.”

A supporter of President Joe Biden, she lauded the current president.

“He’s honest, he’s empathetic to his country,” Frybarger said. “Trump, personally, he’s in it for himself.”

Wearing a shirt saying “Trump 2024,” Mary Lynn Pelican of Fremont cheered the turnout in support of the former president.

“The response is impressive — people from all over the Bay Area are here,” said Pelican, 82, adding that the lack of counter-protestors was indicative of the nation’s lack of enthusiasm for the current president. “It’s pathetic — it doesn’t show much support for Joe Biden, does it?”

California politics | donald trump leaves san francisco for beverly hills to rake in more campaign cash, fans plan a rally to greet trump, who has seen a surge of support in wake of verdict against him.

trip hazard cartoon

This is his first fundraising tour after being convicted of 34 felonies in New York, a verdict that has riled up Republicans and led to a historic surge in campaign contributions. Now he hopes to capitalize on this momentum to rake in big dollars at Friday’s fundraiser as well as at a Saturday event in Newport Beach.

RELATED: Trump comes to SF for fundraiser, but this Bay Area city has already donated more

His motorcade will be greeted in Beverly Hills by a street side rally of supporters waving Trump flags and cheering into megaphones, according to plans from the Republican Party of Los Angeles County (LAGOP) and College Republicans of America.

“Trump’s got a lot of supporters out here and we’re expecting massive numbers at the rallies,” said Will Donohue, president of the College Republicans of America.

“The grassroots has been seriously energized by the outcome of the verdict a few days ago and I think the general consensus of our grassroots here in California is the same nationally: they don’t believe this was a fair trial,” he added.

Donohue said Beverly Hills is a natural place for Trump to visit because many of its residents are fans of his tax cuts and recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The city is also home to two of Los Angeles’ rare red voting precincts where a majority of voters supported Trump in the 2020 election.

While local Trump lovers can be expected to be loud and proud at Friday’s rally, regional Republican representatives have been much more muted in their response to his SoCal stop.

Neither Rep. Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, nor Rep. Michelle Steel, R-Seal Beach, responded to the Daily News’ request for comment about Trump’s visit or recent court verdict. Both congress members are up for election in battleground districts that could play a key role in determining which party controls the House come January.

RELATED: Anti-Trump chicken makes scenic Bay trip as ex-president’s supporters rally in San Francisc o

Steel has not spoken publicly about the verdict, while Garcia initially declined multiple news outlets’ requests for comment but gave one to a reporter in D.C. on Monday. When asked whether he is concerned about having a convicted felon at the top of the ticket he said, “No. I think the American people saw what happened in New York, they saw what were typically misdemeanors being elevated to 34 felonies.”

Both candidates’ responses to the verdict have drawn harsh criticism from Democratic leaders.

“Ultimately, Republicans like Mike Garcia and Michelle Steel are stuck between a rock and a far-right place,” said Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson Dan Gottleib. “They made their bed with Trump, and now they’ll have to justify to California voters how comfortable they are undermining law and order alongside the 34-time convicted elephant in the room. Steel’s silence and Garcia’s embrace are incredibly telling.”

Regional Republicans, on the other hand, have been more understanding of their reticence to speak out.

“A number of Republicans in swing districts in California win because of people who split the ticket, so they will vote for Biden and then for them,” said Jon Fleischman, former executive director of the California Republican Party. “Thus they all need to have their own local strategies on how to keep the focus on the issues that matter to these swing voters.”

This sentiment was echoed by Donohue, who said he recognizes that both candidates have reason to be concerned about political retribution from their commentary on Trump.

“As far as actual input on the Trump trial, I think a lot of them need to do what they need to do to win reelection,” he said. “There’s a lot of consultants that have ideas about what’s best for poll numbers and how they’re going to perform in their district. I think it’s imperative that we keep the house.”

While SoCal residents shouldn’t expect to see Garcia or Steel campaigning for Trump this weekend, Garcia has endorsed Trump for reelection and Steel signed on as a delegate for Trump in the presidential primary.

Residents can, however, expect to see more of Trump in the coming months as he seeks to collect California cash to spend in swing states.

“California is one of a handful of key economic engines that drive a GOP presidential campaign,” said Tim Clark, who headed Trump’s 2016 campaign in the West. “Southern California and the Bay Area are particularly strong in fundraising for the Republican nominee, and with many tech CEOs coming out strongly in favor of funding President Trump’s campaign, it’s clear that the cancel-culture dam has broken.”

Biden is also expected to make more fundraising trips out West, the soonest of which comes next weekend when he will headline a star-studded fundraiser at the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

Iran helicopter crash shows Tehran’s reliance on an aging fleet as well as its challenges at home

In a photo provided by Moj News Agency, rescue team members searched for the wreckage of the helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi after it crashed in Varzaghan in northwestern Iran on May 20.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — By the time Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi boarded his window seat on a helicopter ferrying him, the foreign minister and six others, thick clouds already had begun forming around the mountaintops along the Azerbaijan-Iran border. Despite the worsening weather, the helicopter lifted off for a trip about 145 kilometers (90 miles) southwest to a new oil pipeline near Tabriz.

Within an hour, the Bell 212 helicopter had crashed into a cloud-covered mountainside.

While the cause of the May 19 crash remains unknown, the sudden death of the hard-line protégé of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei exposed the contradictions and challenges facing the country's Shiite theocracy.

The Iranian military investigators probing the crash have previously faced international criticism over their report on troops shooting down a Ukrainian airliner in 2020. The hourslong desperate rescue attempt after the helicopter crash saw Tehran even reach out to the United States for help, just weeks after launching an unprecedented attack on Israel and as it enriches uranium closer than ever to weapons-grade levels. Even the type of helicopter that crashed links back to Iranian history, both before and after the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution.

“Iran is a culture of dualities,” said Farzin Nadimi, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near-East Policy who studies Iran's military. “Some aspects, they seem so good and well-managed, well-oiled and very capable. ... In many levels, it's quite lacking.”

Iranian military investigators have released two statements on the crash, largely ruling out possibilities rather than offering a suspected cause. They've rejected the possibility of an onboard “explosion caused by sabotage" or a “cyberattack” targeting the Bell 212, a two-blade, twin-engine helicopter more widely known as the Huey for its use by the U.S. military in the Vietnam War.

“The recorded conversations between the flight crew show that the last contact with the pilots up to the time of the incident and when they stopped responding lasted 69 seconds,” the investigators said, according to the state-run IRNA news agency. “No emergency declaration was recorded during that time.”

In conspiracy-minded Iran, some officials still insist foul play could have caused the crash. However, some other officials have begun to ask why the helicopter took off from the site of the new Giz Galasi Dam when the weather had started to turn.

Mostafa Mirsalim, a member of the country's Expediency Council, wrote on the social platform X that he had asked prosecutors to “address the mistakes that led to the loss of the president and his delegation,” without elaborating.

Abbas Abdi, a prominent journalist, also wrote on X that the flight path taken by Raisi’s helicopter suggested the pilot didn’t follow a standard Iranian practice of shadowing main roads in rural areas. That can both help navigation and provide a safe landing area in an emergency. Former Iranian Presidents Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Abolhassan Banisadr both survived helicopter crashes while in office.

The helicopter involved in the crash, nearly 30 years old, came directly from a Bell manufacturing plant in Montreal, Canada, to the Iranian air force, according to data from the firm Cirium. It counts 12 Bell 212 aircraft registered in Iran that are still in service.

Bell Textron Inc., based in Fort Worth, Texas, said it "does not conduct any business in Iran or support their helicopter fleet, and we do not have knowledge about the active state of the helicopter involved in this accident.”

But despite being decades old, the Bell 212 and its military counterpart the Huey still are flown around the world. In the United States, Hueys still fly as part of America’s nuclear forces to support its silos and for some VIP missions, said Roger D. Connor, an aeronautics curator at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington. Over 440 still fly worldwide, according to Cirium.

“It’s a simple aircraft to fly by medium helicopter standards. It doesn’t typically have much automation which can have both positive and negative implications for operators,” Connor said. “More automation means more opportunities for pilot confusion in certain circumstances, but also better capabilities in low-visibility conditions.”

Iran's use of the Bell 212 remains pervasive, in part due to the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who struck deals to purchase hundreds of the helicopters and had plans to build a local variant, Nadimi said. Those already in the country at the time of the Islamic Revolution ended up being a key component of Iran's bloody war against Iraq in the 1980s.

But as Western sanctions dried up the supply of parts, fewer of the aircraft were airworthy, despite efforts to locally overhaul them. That saw Iran engage in covert means to secure parts, sparking several U.S. criminal cases for those involved, who sought everything from safety equipment to full engines and night-vision goggles for the aircraft.

Former Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif sought to blame sanctions for the crash. U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller responded by saying America was “not going to apologize for our sanctions regime at all” as Iran has used aircraft to “transport equipment to support terrorism.”

“Ultimately, it’s the Iranian government that is responsible for the decision to fly a ... helicopter in what was described as poor weather conditions, not any other actor,” Miller said.

Meanwhile, questions remain over why Iran couldn't find the helicopter for hours, even though one of the victims reportedly talked by cellphone with officials. Such calls, in theory, can be triangulated by security services. Also, it remains unclear if the helicopter had any emergency tracker, which are common on aircraft.

While the investigation continues, Nadimi said he believed that the Bell 212 that flew Raisi did not have advanced avionics that could have been useful for low-visibility flight. However, he stressed that the major issue in the crash likely involves who allowed the flight to take off as the weather turned poor and whether the pilot faced pressure from his VIP passengers to make the journey no matter what.

“Pilot error, human error might be to blame, but there was a chain of events that caused this crash, not just pilot error,” Nadimi said. “That helicopter should have been able to clear that terrain and fly safely to its destination. They should not have been dispatched for flying.”
