The predominantly agricultural county of Angus, east of the A9 and north of the Firth of Tay, holds some of the northeast’s greatest scenery and is relatively free of tourists, who tend to head further west for the Highlands proper. The coast from Montrose to Arbroath is especially inviting, with scarlet cliffs and sweeping bays. Dundee, although not the most obvious tourist destination, has in recent years become a rather dynamic and progressive city, and makes for a less snooty alternative to Aberdeen.

The Angus coast

The angus glens and around.

In the north of the county, the long fingers of the Angus glens – heather-covered hills tumbling down to rushing rivers – are overlooked by the southern peaks of the Grampian Mountains. Handsome if uneventful market towns such as Brechin, Kirriemuir and Blairgowrie are good bases, extravagant Glamis Castle is well worth a visit, and Angus is liberally dotted with Pictish remains.

Highland Tour: Isle of Skye, Loch Ness and Edinburgh

Discover the beautiful region of Perthshire, the famous Loch Ness and Inverness – the capital of the Highlands. Get a chance to admire Europe’s oldest mountain, stroll along sandy beaches on the Scottish West Coast, and visit the mysterious Isle of Skye.

Two roads link Dundee to Aberdeen and the northeast coast of Scotland. By far the more pleasant option is the slightly longer A92 coast road, which joins the inland A90 at Stonehaven, just south of Aberdeen. Intercity buses follow both roads, while the coast-hugging train line from Dundee is one of the most picturesque in Scotland, passing attractive beaches and impressive cliffs, and stopping in the old seaports of Arbroath and Montrose.

Book a silent disco adventure in Aberdeen

Since it was settled in the twelfth century, local fishermen have been landing their catches at ARBROATH, about fifteen miles northeast of Dundee. The town’s most famous product is the Arbroath smokie – line-caught haddock, smoke-cured over smouldering oak chips and still made here in a number of family-run smokehouses tucked in around the harbour. One of the most approachable and atmospheric is M&M Spink’s tiny whitewashed premises at 10 Marketgate; chef and cookery writer Rick Stein described the fish here, warm from the smoke, as “a world-class delicacy”.

Immediately north of Dundee, the low-lying Sidlaw Hills divide the city from the rich agricultural region of Strathmore, whose string of tidy market towns lies on a fertile strip along the southernmost edge of the heather-covered lower slopes of the Grampian Mountains. These towns act as gateways to the Angus glens, a series of tranquil valleys penetrated by singletrack roads and offering some of the most rugged and majestic landscapes in northeast Scotland. It’s a rain-swept, wind-blown, sparsely populated area, whose roads become impassable with the first snows, sometimes as early as October, and where the summers see clouds of ferocious midges. The most useful road through the glens is the A93, which cuts through Glen Shee, linking Blairgowrie to Braemar on Deeside. It’s pretty dramatic stuff, threading its way over Britain’s highest main road, the Cairnwell Pass (2199ft).

Meigle Museum

The tiny settlement of MEIGLE is home to Scotland’s most important collection of early Christian and Pictish inscribed stones. The exact meaning and purpose of the stones and their enigmatic symbols is obscure, as is the reason why so many of them were found here. The most likely theory is that Meigle was once an important ecclesiastical centre that attracted secular burials of prominent Picts. Housed in a modest former schoolhouse, the Meigle Museum displays some thirty pieces dating from the seventh to the tenth centuries, all found in and around the nearby churchyard. The majority are either gravestones that would have lain flat, or cross slabs inscribed with the sign of the cross, usually standing. Most impressive is the 7ft-tall great cross slab, said to be the gravestone of Guinevere, wife of King Arthur.

J.M. Barrie in Kirrie

The presence of a statue of Peter Pan in Kirrie is justified, since the town was the birthplace of his creator, J.M. Barrie (1860–1937). A local handloom-weaver’s son, Barrie first came to notice with his series of novels about “Thrums”, a village based on his home town, and he wrote the story of Peter Pan, the little boy who never grew up, in 1904 – some say as a response to an upbringing dominated by the memory of his older brother, who died as a child. Barrie’s birthplace, a plain little whitewashed cottage at 9 Brechin Rd, has been opened up as a visitor attraction, with a series of small rooms decorated as they would have been during the author’s childhood, as well as displays about his life and works.

Skiing at Glen Shee

Scotland’s ski resorts make for a fun day out for anyone from beginners to experienced skiers and, given that Glen Shee is both the most extensive and the most accessible of Scotland’s ski areas, just over two hours from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, it’s as good an introduction as any to the sport in Scotland.

For information, contact Ski Glenshee, which also offers ski rental and lessons. Ski rental starts at around £16 a day, and a 90min lesson is around £15. Lift passes cost £24 per day or £96 for a five-day (Mon–Fri) ticket. For the latest snow and weather conditions, phone the centre itself or check out the Ski Scotland website. For cross-country skiing, there are some good touring areas in the vicinity; contact Braemar Mountain Sports for information and equipment rental.

Live: The general election news across Tayside, Fife and Stirling

Results and breaking news from Dundee, Angus, Perthshire, Fife and Stirling, as they happen.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer speaks to supporters amid his party's victory. Image: Jeff Moore/PA Wire

Scottish and UK politics looks a lot different today than it did before the polls closed at 10pm last night.

Labour has won the election in a landslide victory, with both the SNP and Conservatives falling to disastrous defeats.

The Courier has all you need to know about how this seismic night unfolded in your area – including who is your new MP.

Scroll below to see a breakdown of the results in your area.

The first of our results saw Pete Wishart hold Perth and Kinross-shire for the SNP.

And it is quickly followed up by a Chris Law win in Dundee Central for the party.

But they have also lost Stirling and Strathallan to Labour with Chris Kane taking the seat – Labour had an 8% share of the vote in 2019.

travel news angus scotland

Labour’s Melanie Ward has been elected in Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy, with the SNP’s vote share down significantly on its 2019 performance.

In the early hours of the morning, Sir Keir Starmer said “we did it” at a victory party as General Election results pointed to a Labour landslide, adding “change begins now”.

Fife continued to vote Labour with Richard Baker elected in Glenrothes and Mid Fife.

One senior insider said turnout may have impacted the party’s performance, with large numbers of SNP voters potentially opting to stay at home.

Dunfermline and Dollar elected Labour’s Graeme Downie, a gain from the SNP who won the seat with a majority of over 10,000 at the last election.

But the SNP took the new Arbroath and Broughty Ferry seat with Stephen Gethins elected.

travel news angus scotland

The Lib Dems retained North East Fife with a landslide Wendy Chamberlain victory.

The final result of the night saw the SNP and Dave Doogan take the new Angus and Perthshire Glens seat.

Our readers will also be interested in the outcome of the Alloa and Grangemouth seat, which saw sitting Perth and Kinross councillor Brian Leishman beat the SNP’s John Nicolson who had been MP for Ochil and South Perthshire.

First Minister John Swinney addressed his party’s bruising election result, admitting it was “difficult and damaging”.

He added: “We need to take the time to consider and to reflect on how we deliver our commitment to independence – which remains absolute.”

The twists and turns of a seismic night

Conservative candidate Richard Brooks says his party was in a “strong third” in Arbroath and Broughty Ferry, which is “a little disappointing.”

Brooks claimed more people than expected had also voted for Reform UK in the constituency.

Meanwhile, Dundonian firebrand George Galloway’s brief return to Westminster is over.

The former Labour MP had won a byelection in Rochdale just four months ago, saying the victory was a clear warning to Sir Keir Starmer in the backlash over policies on Israel’s conflict in Gaza.

Tonight, former political journalist Paul Waugh won the general election contest against him for Labour.

Mr Galloway’s political career began in Dundee.

The Lochee-born, Fedora-wearing political brawler has fought a number of contests since leaving Labour. He was unsuccessful at the last Scottish Parliament election in 2021.

Flynn reflective after holding seat

Stephen Flynn, the Dundonian leader of the SNP at Westminster, has been re-elected in Aberdeen South.

He was reflective of the wider SNP losses following his victory, saying: “We are experiencing something we have not experienced for quite some time.

“We are going to be beaten in Scotland and we are going to be beaten well.

“Now is the time that we must listen and learn. We must listen to what the people of Scotland have told us.”

First Minister John Swinney received the backing of one of his frontline ministers as his party face a rough night at the polls.

Education secretary Jenny Gilruth had said John Swinney’s job as SNP leader will not be at risk even if the party drops to the 10 seats predicted the General Election exit poll.

They currently sit on 9.

Speaking at the Fife election count where four seats are being tallied, Ms Gilruth said the SNP was behind the first minister “100%”.

A ‘massacre’

Former first minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon

Reacting to the exit poll, Scotland’s former first minister Nicola Sturgeon told ITV: “This is at the grimmer end of the expectations for the SNP if the exit poll is right.”

Ruth Davidson called the projected election result a “massacre” for the Conservative Party after exit polls were released.

Scottish Conservative Leader Douglas Ross was one of the party’s high profile victims of the polls, losing Aberdeenshire North and Moray East to the SNP.

Further south former Prime Minister Liz Truss, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Grant Shapps and Jonathan Gullis also lost their seats.

The provost of Angus has resigned after he berated a councillor to tears during a public meeting.

Brian Boyd announced he is stepping down from the role with immediate effect after video footage emerged online of the incident on 20 June.

Mr Boyd was branded a "verbal bully" for his "hysterical and theatrical outburst" by a fellow councillor after clips were shared on social media.

The independent councillor described himself as a "very dramatic person" when he previously apologised during the council meeting for going "over the score" with Lois Speed.

But in a statement on Tuesday, after the video was posted online following the general election, Mr Boyd said: "While I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the people of Angus as their provost, I recognise that my behaviour fell below my own personal standards.

"Therefore, I will continue to put Angus first and be standing down with immediate effect."

Mr Boyd added he will continue to act as a councillor for the Carnoustie and District ward.

In the video, independent councillor Lois Smith is interrupted as she attempts to ask a question.

Mr Boyd is seen standing up, stating: "Councillor Speed, when I stand up, everyone here sits down."

He then reads out the council's policy on standing orders, adding: "When the convener starts to speak, any member who is standing will resume his or her seat.

"No other member will stand and the convener shall be heard without interruption. Have I made myself clear? Thank you."

Ms Speed responds that she is "very confused" and was building up to her question.

Mr Boyd is recorded replying: "So, carry on with your question then, and relevance, please. Thank you."

Ms Speed, the councillor for Arbroath East and Lunan, is then seen getting emotional before leaving the room.

One colleague describes Mr Boyd's behaviour as "unfair", while another brands it a "disgrace".

The meeting stopped for a break following the incident.

Mr Boyd later apologised, saying: "As you can see it's a very terse day and I think this is the opportune moment for me to apologise to Lois, or councillor Speed, for my overreaction.

"I'm a very dramatic person at the best of times and I did go over the score on that. I hope you accept my apology."

Ms Speed was contacted for comment.

Scottish Conservatives councillor Craig Fotheringham told Sky News Mr Boyd was not fit to hold the title of provost.

The Monifieth and Sidlaw ward councillor stated: "Councillor Boyd has made the correct decision as he's nothing short of a verbal bully and not fit to hold a public office.

"Councillor Speed was clearly shocked, shaken and extremely upset by his hysterical and theatrical outburst, which has no place in society, never mind a public office.

"I'm delighted that he has resigned as provost of Angus as he's not fit to hold that title."

Scottish hospitality businesses adapting so they can rise to market challenges, say industry leaders

F rom wine safaris, where guests explore Scotland’s countryside, to developing wedding venues and corporate event spaces, Scotland’s hospitality businesses are expanding their range of services to draw in visitors.

The past few years have presented a challenging time for many businesses across Scotland, with the hospitality and tourism sector feeling the hit.

Rising costs, staffing issues, and reduced footfall due to the cost of living crisis have all put a strain on an industry that is vital to the Scottish economy, with 15,830 registered tourism businesses providing 175,900 jobs across the country according to the Scottish Tourism Alliance.

Figures from the Great Britain Tourism Survey 2023 show almost a 7% fall in domestic holidays across Scotland in 2023 compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the figures for Scotland also showed nearly a 6% drop in spending last year.

Despite a fall in domestic holidayers and their spending, Scotland’s hospitality businesses experienced some respite with an increase in international visitors vying to see what the country has to offer.

International tourism in Scotland is showing promise, with almost 4 million international tourists visiting the country in 2023. Additionally, their spending increased by 41% from 2019, with visitors spending £3.6 billion last year.

The statistics make for good reading and the outlook for 2024 shows continued improvement. Visit Britain anticipates 39.5 million overseas visitors will holiday to the UK in 2024, bringing a boost of £34.1 billion, some 7.6% more than the previous year.

With Scotland offering must-see destinations, such as Perthshire, Dumfries & Galloway, and the Highlands, all of which are listed in Booking.com’s top 5 most welcoming destinations for global travellers, and 40% of visitors stating their break in Scotland was ‘the best holiday they had ever taken’, hospitality business owners can feel positive for the future.

Alasdair Swan, Senior Commercial Relationship Manager at specialist hospitality lender, Cumberland Building Society, which provides commercial lending to Scotland’s hospitality businesses, said: “Scotland’s hospitality and tourism sector has suffered several setbacks over the past few years which have presented considerable challenges to overcome.

“Our people-first approach to banking allows us to work incredibly close with our customers in the hospitality space, and so we’ve seen first-hand just how difficult things have been for these businesses to stay afloat.

“What is noticeable is the resilience of Scotland’s business owners who work day in, day out to adapt their services and evolve the experience they offer to visitors so they can continue to serve their local communities and contribute to their local economies.”

He continued: “There is still a long way to go before the industry can consign the challenges of recent years to the past, but it’s fantastic to see positive actions from Scotland’s hospitality businesses to create value for their guests and increase their appeal.”

One such business owner looking to evolve his hotel’s offering to deliver a truly unique experience is Tom Lewis, owner of Lochearnhead based Monachyle Mhor.

He said: “ Last year has been up and down. Our weekends have been bigger but we're quieter during the week. There are a lot of things influencing this from the cost of living crisis to weather and so on.

“What we know is that people like to come for the peace and tranquillity and that they are also looking for more than just accommodation, they are looking for experiences. So, we are trying to offer something different and to show people how beautiful the landscape truly is.

“ To adapt, we've introduced a wine safari which is a unique experience. People can walk up the beautiful Glen and try different wines, paired with the best of Scottish produce prepared by our chef, such as Scottish scallops and venison. It’s something that everyone can enjoy, from families to couples, as well as dogs being welcome too. It has become a popular experience.

“Weddings are another revenue driver for us where people want to get married surrounded by a stunning location. We're also looking to host corporate experiences that impress.”

As well as Scotland seeing an increase in international travellers, there are still plenty of Scottish residents planning to take breaks within the country’s borders also.

Some 40% of Scottish nationals are anticipated to take a holiday within Scotland, 56 Degree Insight reports. Crucially, 43% - up from 36% at the start of the year – of Scottish nationals are looking to protect their full holiday budget by making cutbacks elsewhere so they can spend without worry when enjoying their break away.

Marc Crothall, CEO, Scottish Tourism Alliance, said: “What’s clear is that while people are keen to spend their vacation in Scotland, they are also looking for an experience that will give them unforgettable memories. For hospitality and tourism business owners who adapt and can do this, they will stand themselves in good stead for the future.”
