Review of the Mifold and Hifold Car Booster Seats

When it comes to travel products, we always look for the most practical and useful items that would suit our travel needs. I have always found finding the right car booster seats the most difficult. During our 9-month world trip, we struggled a lot with car seats and often had to pay quite a lot of money to rent out the car seats. As we were travelling to many different countries it was not really practical to buy the car seats as they tend to be quite bulky and heavy. We tend to travel light so we need something easy to carry and a car seat that we trust will keep our kids safe.

I was recently contacted by the company Mifold which specialise in compact and portable car safety seats for children between the age of 4 and 12 years. I will be reviewing their multi-award-winning Mifold Comfort grab and go booster seat and Hifold highback fit and fold booster car seats.

Disclosure, We were gifted the Mifold and Hifold car seats in return for a review on our blog and Instagram . All opinions are as always our own.

travel car seat mifold hifold

Our experience with MiFold Car Booster Seat

I was pretty surprised at how small and compact these seats were so my first question as a parent was to make sure that they follow the safety level of booster seats and whether they can be used on travel abroad. The Mifold Comfort seat has been approved by the European Regulation ECE R44/04. It also meets US and Canadian standards

Safety-wise, we like the fact that the adult seat belt can be adjusted to fit the individual size of the child with the use of the adjustable safety clip. In our previous car booster seats, the seat belt would always be uncomfortable around the shoulder and neck area, however, the adjustable safety clip avoids this problem. The lap belt is also lower on the child unlike when you use a booster seat.

Mifold Comfort grab and go seats are exactly that; you can literally grab and go. Due to their compact size, they are really easy to take with you either on holidays but also if you need a friend or family to do pick up runs from school. You don’t need to worry about lending your bulky car seat; so they make a good addition to your fitted car seats.

The Mifold seats are also really easy to use; you simply unwind the shoulder belt strap; which allows you to open the seat. The seat has 3 adjustable seat guides to fit the size of your child. The quick-clip also ensures that you can adjust the seat belt to the height of your child.

We tried our 2 Mifold comfort seats on our Road trip to Tenerife. It was so practical to carry these with us as they are light, compact and can fit into your hand luggage. By carrying our own car seats we were able to save money on our car rental but also did not have to carry big bulky car seat boosters with us on the plane. Or kids were happy to use these seats for a week travelling around the Island.

Our experience with Hifold Car Booster Seat

We have been using the Hifold for a few months now for my 6-year-old. We were looking for something comfortable but we also needed something that we could easily fold down and travel with. So far we are quite satisfied with the Hifold car seat because we can adjust the seat belt using the lap and shoulder guides so our child is more secure. We also feel more comfortable taking this on our travels because it still has the side impact protection and headrest side protection which many travel booster seats don’t have.

travel car seat mifold hifold

Would we recommend the Mifold and Hifold Booster Car Seats?

Having used both the Mifold and Hifold Seats we would recommend these seats for different situations. We love the fact that the Mifold is lightweight and compact to carry on our travels. It is perfect for holidays and taxi rides. On our 1-week road trip to Tenerife, the Mifold seats were really the perfect solution for us. I would probably not use them for really long travels or regular travel as my kids love to look out of the window and the seats are understandable lower than the bulky car seats. Also, I would prefer to use the Hifold seats for longer travels because they have added side and headrest protection. Both products are definitely a great solution for globetrotters and for those who need a practical, easy and safe solution.

How to choose a portable car booster seat

Before you buy a travel booster car seat, it’s important to think honestly about your child. Is he big enough to meet the minimum requirements of the booster seat for traveling that you’re considering? Is she mature enough to sit properly in the seat 100% of the time? That means no bending down to get a tablet that falls down or putting the shoulder belt under her arm because it annoys her. Will he fall asleep in the car if he’s jet lagged after a long flight?

These are all things you’ll need to consider before jumping into traveling booster seats. In my experience, many kids are ready to transition to a backless booster for travel at age 6 (though there were a few times during our gap year when our 6yo fell asleep and I wished we had something different for him). Our younger one did great in the Ride Safer travel vest from age 3.5 to around 6, at which time she switched to a highback booster seat for travel since she was still a car sleeper.

What should you look for in a portable booster seat for travel? Here are a few suggestions:

-Choose between Ride Safer travel vest , highback booster and backless booster based on your child’s age, size and how much they sleep in the car

-Look for one that is light enough and compact enough to take as a carry-on or out in the city for the day

-Ideally it should last at least 3-4 years

Every trip may have different needs, too. If your travels involve lots of driving you’ll want to make sure you choose a comfortable option. On the other hand, if you’ll just be taking a quick taxi ride from the airport to the city center then portability might be more important than cushy padding or supportive headwings.

As you can see from the criteria above, there’s no one “best booster seat for travel”. Once you know your family’s needs, you can pick the right travel booster car seat. As you can see below, there’s a huge variety of portable booster seat options on the market today.

Ride Safer Travel Vest review

travel car seat mifold hifold

Key stats: -Weight 2lbs -Size small: minimum age 3, fits best for 30+ lbs and 35-47″ -Size large: minimum age 4, fits best for 50+ lbs and 45-57″

Pros: ✔ Rolls up to the size of a 2L soda bottle ✔ Perfect for taxi rides ✔ Lowers seat belt to provide an appropriate fit for young children ✔ Keeps kids properly seated better than a traditional booster seat – even when sleeping ✔ Easy to fit 3-across since it’s only as wide as the child ✔ 5 year expiration

Cons: ✘ No side impact protection like a highback booster seat ✘ Takes practice to get belt fit right ✘ NOT permitted for use on planes

Several years ago the kind folks at Safe Ride 4 Kids sent us a Ride Safer travel vest to review, and it hasn’t left our travel kit since. The Ride Safer travel vest is completely different than the other travel car seats and booster seats on the market.

You could say that the Ride Safer travel vest is sort of in between a booster seat and a traditional forward-facing car seat. It relies on the car’s seat belt to handle most of the restraint, but also has an optional top tether that minimizes head movement in an accident and keeps your child in the correct position even if they fall asleep (or drop a toy). While our youngest child wasn’t ready for a booster seat yet at 6 since she was a car sleeper – especially when jet-lagged – we were comfortable with her riding in the Ride Safer vest.

So comfortable, in fact, that we brought our Ride Safer vest on our year-long trip around the world! It’s seen action on six continents and served us well the whole time. Once we practiced a few times, we got very fast at putting her in the vest and getting her secured in the car. The newer version features an easier buckle in the front and more adjustability, so that should help many parents.

The Ride Safer Gen 5 is rated for kids beginning at 3 years old and 30lbs, but honestly we felt that the fit was better starting at 3.5 or even 4 years old and other parents agree with us. Fortunately size small should last most kids until 6 or even 7 thanks to the adjustable shoulder strap length. It also comes in large and XL sizes to accommodate kids who are older or bigger but still not quite mature enough for a booster seat. Because there’s no side impact protection, it’s a good idea to put your Ride Safer in the middle seat.

Ride Safer Travel Vest travel booster car seat alternative

For families going on extended journeys like ours who just can’t take a traditional car seat or those heading somewhere like NYC or Paris, where they’ll mostly rely on public transportation but need an occasional taxi ride, the Ride Safer travel vest is a fantastic option.

For a more typical trip that involves flying and then renting a car for a week or two, we sometimes opt to bring our other travel car seat . But if you’re choosing between the Ride Safer travel vest or a backless booster seat, the vest is the better choice for younger kids and/or car sleepers .

While we generally think of the Ride Safer as a travel car seat alternative, we also use it at home often. I keep it in my trunk at all times so that we can fit 3-across in our car for those unexpected carpools or for when Grandma comes for a visit! Since the vest is as narrow as the child in it, there’s no trouble fitting it between two big car seats in our compact SUV.

Best travel highback booster seat options

Ok, so what if you feel like your child year old is mature enough (and big enough) for a compact high back booster seat? There are a few great choices to consider for the next stage.

Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120 Booster Seat review

travel car seat mifold hifold

Key stats: -Weight 15lbs -Highback booster size limit 40-120lbs, up to 63″

Pros: ✔ Steel reinforced frame ✔ Rigid LATCH ✔ Tons of size adjustments for a great fit ✔ Reclines for sleep ✔ Extremely narrow ✔ 10 year expiration

Cons: ✘ Really expensive ✘ No arm rests ✘ Heavy ✘ Folded size is as big as a carry-on suitcase

For a long time, I hesitated to recommend this next seat as a travel booster seat due to its high price tag. However, in light of so many discontinuations of less expensive and lighter competing seats, I’m bumping it up in the list.

The Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120 has some great features, but a price tag to match as well. You can generally get it cheaper here with their coupon . It’s hard to fathom spending that much on luxury foldable high back booster car seat that doesn’t have any other modes available. However, some of the premium features make it a solid choice.

First off, it’ll last forever… or at least as long as you want it to. The upper size limit is a whopping 120 lbs and 63″, which is the size of a petite adult. Most riders that size will fit in a seatbelt just fine without a booster seat so you may not ever need a backless booster. The other piece of lasting forever is that Peg Perego gives 10 years until expiration of this seat. If you have a second child (or third or fourth!) they’ll be able to get a few years out of this seat as well.

Second, it’s loaded with reassuring safety features. The Viaggio Flex 120 has rigid LATCH connectors to easily install the booster seat and keep it from moving around, while most of the other booster seats on this list don’t have LATCH at all to save on weight. The back of the seat is also steel reinforced for additional safety.

Third, kids generally like it. It’s padded, it has folding cupholders on each side and the lack of armrests (though a downside for long drives) means it’s easier for booster-age kids to buckles themselves. You can even recline it on the fly after installing with rigid LATCH to allow your kids to rest a little. It’s also a really narrow car seat, which helps if you’re trying to squeeze three kids in the back row.

So what’s wrong with this child safety booster seat, other than perhaps the price ? It comes down to the portability aspect. The steel reinforcement and rigid LATCH add an extra 5-6 pounds compared to competitors, making you less likely to sling this one over your shoulder and use it out on the town. It’s not even close to the most lightweight booster seat for travel. Likewise, it’s not all that small when folded – about 2′ long! You’ll be lucky to fit it in the overhead bin, but taking it when you walk around a city means you’ll need a really big backpack to carry it.

The best use for the Peg Perego Viaggio Flex booster seat is probably when you’re flying to head on a road trip and won’t be moving it in and out of cars all the time. It’s an especially good choice for those situations if you’ll need to fit 3-across in a rental car since it’s so narrow.

hifold fit-and-fold Booster review

travel car seat mifold hifold

Key stats: -Weight 10lbs -Highback booster size limit 4yo, 40-100lbs, 40-59″ -Belt guide 14-20″

Pros: ✔ Tons of size adjustments for great fit ✔ Folds down small ✔ Legal to use everywhere except Australia (in progress) ✔ Extremely narrow ✔ 7 year expiration

Cons: ✘ Expensive if you will only use for a few years ✘ No cup holders included ✘ Bigger than some of the other travel-specific car seats

Sometimes I can get just a little too enthusiastic about innovative car seats. In this case, I’m pumped. While I’ve never been totally sold on the belt fit of the mifold backless booster , the company’s new hifold Fit-and-Fold highback booster car seat looks amazing for city-dwellers and travelers alike. No joke.

Read more: My in-depth hifold review

What’s so cool about the hifold folding booster seat ? While the weight is nothing to write home about at 10lbs, it folds down into an ultra-compact package – 13.5″ square and 10″ high. That means it’s easy to carry around in a backpack, throw it in your trunk or even stow it in the overhead bin of most airplanes. Of the folding booster seats ( would you believe that there are a few choices now for folding highback boosters? ) it’s the lightest and folds the smallest . It’s the best foldable booster seat with a back for taking as a carry-on.

The hifold booster is extremely adjustable to offer the optimal fit to booster riders of all sizes. There are three widths for the seat, three widths for the body, three widths for the head and nine height settings! They claim to offer 243 individual settings. That means it’ll fit new booster riders just as well as kids who are ready to transition to an adult seatbelt. For those of us with kids who are small for their ages but mature enough for a booster, the hifold car seat is a fantastic option as a travel high back booster seat.

young girl in red hifold travel highback booster seat

It’s also one of the narrowest high back boosters available, so it’s really helpful if you need to fit three car seats in a small car (whether at home or a rental on vacation). Overall it’s a great travel car seat for 6 year old kids on up.

Ok so why wouldn’t everyone run out and buy a hifold? Unfortunately all that innovation doesn’t come cheap . Don’t get me wrong, I think the price is completely reasonable for what you get; however, the seat is something of a one-trick pony. There’s no harness for kids who aren’t mature enough to stay in position all the time, and it doesn’t convert to a backless booster seat when your child is ready to ride that way. Many families will feel ready to bring a lightweight backless booster around 6 or 7. So the typical usage for many families will be around two years (let’s say 5-7, or perhaps 4.5-6.5 for families who feel comfortable transitioning to the “next stage” early). If you travel a lot or have a younger sibling to use this in the coming years, it’s definitely a worthwhile investment.

The hifold is a great choice for a kid who is mature enough to ride in a highback booster seat but would still benefit from some extra support when sleeping. It’s also a great choice if you’re visiting a place like the EU or Costa Rica , where recent laws have pushed for younger booster riders to stay in a highback booster and increased the age for backless boosters to much older stages. In fact, it’s even approved everywhere in the world except Australia – and that’s in the works. It’s a really slim booster seat so you won’t need to size up your rental car to fit two of them side-by-side.

Babytrend YUMI Folding Booster Seat review

travel car seat mifold hifold

Key stats: -Weight 9lbs -Highback booster size limit 40-100lbs, 38-57″ -Backless booster size limit 40-100lbs, 42-57″

Pros: ✔ Highback mode lasts until kids are ready for a backless booster ✔ Converts to backless booster ✔ Bargain price ✔ Cupholders and cushy padding for long drives ✔ 9 year expiration

Cons: ✘ Folded size is as large as a carry-on suitcase

If you’re shopping for a bargain travel booster seat, here it is. The Baby Trend Yumi folding booster seat has been around for a long time under different names and was a pioneer in this type of product. But is this foldable booster car seat still worth buying?

The highback booster size limits are a little lower than the hifold above, but when your child is ready you can remove the back to use it as a no back booster seat that goes all the way to 100 lbs (theoretically – in practice, it would probably be too narrow for a 100lb tween to be comfortable). Combined with the rock-bottom price tag , the Baby Trend Yumi 2-in-1 folding booster seat is an incredible value. (Note: The previous version of this seat did not convert to a backless booster and is even cheaper.)

A big plus of the Baby Trend Yumi is that it’s a booster seat designed for everyday use. It’s got cupholders and plenty of cushy padding. That makes it a great choice if you plan to fly somewhere and then take the kids on a long family road trip. Other folding booster seats like the hifold might not win kids’ hearts on a six hour drive, which of course means less peace for us parents.

The big downside of the Yumi is the fold. Whereas the hifold collapses into thirds to make an ultra-compact package, the Yumi’s fold just isn’t as small. While you might be able to fit the hifold under the seat in front of you, the Baby Trend Yumi definitely has to go in the overhead bin – and possibly sideways, depending on the size of the plane. With overcrowded bins the days there’s something to be said for a tiny package that won’t attract the attention of the flight crew!

For families on a budget or those with long drives ahead, the Baby Trend Yumi is worth a serious look.

Diono Monterey 5ist Booster Seat review

travel car seat mifold hifold

Key stats: -Weight 19lbs -Highback booster size limit 40lbs/38″ to 120lbs/63″; max belt guide 21″

Pros: ✔ Folds for compact storage ✔ Easy for kids to buckle ✔ Side impact tested ✔ Rigid LATCH for quick installation ✔ Very roomy, width adjusts to fit even the biggest kids ✔ Highest weight and height limits of any booster ✔ 8 year expiration

Cons: ✘ Heavier than other folding booster seats ✘ Too wide for 3-across as kids get taller

If you’re looking for the best travel booster seat for a child who will just be traveling to Grandma’s house now and then, put the new Diono Monterey 5iST on your consideration list. It’s not the lightest booster seat on this list, but it has a ton to offer.

First off, the Monterey 5iST adjusts tall enough and wide enough to last nearly every kid to the end of their boostering days (it’s officially rated to 63″ and 120lbs). Since it’s good for 8 years, if you buy it now you may not need to buy your child another car seat or booster seat ever again .

young girl in blue Diono Monterey 5ist folding travel booster car seat

When you do plan to take that occasional flight, the 5iST folds to about the size of a domestic carry-on suitcase so that you can probably fit it in the overhead bin (YMMV depending on the airline and aircraft). I hope that the next version will have more supportive staps – or even a hip belt. Alternatively, you can just leave it at Grandma’s and she won’t even notice it in the closet since it folds so compactly.

The Monterey 5iST has plenty of great features: side impact protection, rigid LATCH, unbeatable ease-of-use and more. Subjectively, it also feels extremely sturdy. This is a wonderful everyday booster seat.

My kids absolutely love the booster we received from Diono. You can read more in my in-depth Diono Monterey 5iST review , but my 10 year old is so enamored that he’s chosen to ride in it full-time. That’s high praise from an image-conscious tween!

Best backless booster car seats for travel

Using an ultra-portable backless booster seat can make your travels so much easier! We made the switch when our older child was 6 years old, mature enough not to wiggle around and rarely fell asleep in the car. Our younger child isn’t ready yet at 6 years old, so she still rides in a harnessed car seat – even for travel. Read these backless booster seat reviews to help you choose the right one for your family:

Bubblebum booster seat review

travel car seat mifold hifold

Key stats: -Weight under 1 lbs ( really! ) -Backless booster size limit 40-100lbs, age 4+

Pros: ✔ Lightest booster seat ✔ Extremely narrow ✔ Good seatbelt fit in lots of cars

Cons: ✘ Can slide around if kids are wiggly ✘ 4 year expiration (from first use)

The best backless booster seat for travel is one with which we’re extremely familiar: the Bubblebum inflatable booster seat . We traveled full-time with this booster seat for the better part of two years.

The Bubblebum travel booster seat is pretty amazing. It weighs about one pound and deflates/rolls to the size of a soda bottle – it’s a truly packable booster seat. Setting it up takes just a few seconds, and there’s even a shoulder belt guide to give a great fit for kids of different sizes in all different vehicles.

If you’re a family with a mature kid who doesn’t sleep in the car the Bubblebum gives you the paragon of portability. It’s the perfect option for taking around on days in a city when you think you might hop in a taxi to get home at night or if you’re taking lots of planes and trains for an extended trip.

young boy in a Bubblebum inflatable booster seat, one of best travel booster seat options

The Bubblebum is so light that it may shift if your kid is very wiggly. But if your kid is very wiggly, they may not be ready for a backless booster yet. In that case, I’d go with the RideSafer travel vest for an ultra-portable option or one of the high back booster seats for travel listed above. We also had an issue with one of our Bubblebums deflating after we left it inflated in a hot car for a month (oops!); we reached out to customer service and they sent us a whole new one for just the $7 shipping charge!

We started using this booster seat at 6 years old, and we think that’s about right. But it’s approved for 4 years old/40lbs and there are plenty of 5 year olds who can use it successfully, especially if your drives are short. This is a judgement call for each family and also depends on the specifics of your travels.

hiccapop Uberboost booster seat review

travel car seat mifold hifold

Key stats: -Weight 1.25 lbs -Backless booster size limit 40-110lbs and 38-62″

Pros: ✔ Extremely light and compact ✔ Very narrow ✔ More stable than other ultra-portable booster seats

Cons: ✘ Frustrating shoulder belt adjuster clip

If you like the idea of an inflatable booster seat for travel, there’s a new option to consider these days. The newish hiccapop Uberboost follows the same basic concept as the Bubblebum but with a few pros and cons.

Read more: My in-depth hiccapop Uberboos t review

The hiccapop packs down slightly smaller than the Bubblebum but inflates to offer a larger seating seating area. Score! It does that by keeping the inside of the booster seat completely empty (meaning it’s just a heavy-duty air bladder), while the Bubblebum has memory foam inside the booster seat to help it pass crash testing even when deflated. The hiccapop Uberboost also has a grippy layer on the bottom to prevent it from sliding around.

travel car seat mifold hifold

The biggest downside for us is that our leggy 48″ rider needs the shoulder adjuster clip in most seating positions but finds it very uncomfortable. The clip is much bulkier than on our other travel booster seats.

If your child is 48″+ or has a longer torso, you might be able to avoid using the clip – just be sure that the shoulder belt makes nice, complete contact with the middle of the collar bone. In that case the hiccapop Uberboost is a great choice for a traveling booster seat. For a smaller child, I’d stick with the Bubblebum for now.

Graco RightGuide booster seat review

travel car seat mifold hifold

Key stats: -Weight 2 lbs -Backless booster size limit 50-120lbs, 43-60″, age 5+

Pros: ✔ Extremely light booster seat ✔ Very compact booster seat when folded ✔ Narrow option for 3-across with big kids ✔ Inconspicuous option for tweens ✔ 10 year expiration

Cons: ✘ Belt guide may not stay in place securely ✘ Incompatible with some seatbelt designs

If you have a big kid or tween who’s approaching readiness for the adult seatbelt (usually 10-12 years old) but not quite there, check out the Graco RightGuide . It’s ultra low profile and easy to throw in a backpack or clip to the outside of a carry-on suitcase. It does require that kids be at least 5 years old, 43″ and 50lbs – a weight many kids don’t achieve until they’re around 7 or even older.

The RightGuide offers a wonderful seatbelt fit even for kids at the bottom of the stated size range. It can be problematic with certain types of seatbelts, so be sure to read my Graco RightGuide review to know what you need to look out for.

travel car seat mifold hifold

Cosco Rise LX booster seat review

travel car seat mifold hifold

Key stats: -Weight 2 lbs -Backless booster size limit 40-100lbs, 43-57″

Pros: ✔ Extremely light ✔ Bargain price ✔ Good seatbelt fit ✔ Narrow enough for 3-across ✔ Updated LX version has more padding

Cons: ✘ Doesn’t fold

Do you like the idea of a more “traditional” booster seat but want a more compact form for travel? Or do you worry that your child will outgrow the width of the Bubblebum too quickly? The new Cosco Rise LX might be your best travel car booster seat option! We own the original non-LX version and have used it extensively.

The Cosco Rise LX (and original) are the booster seat in its simplest form: you put it down on the seat and then your kiddo buckles and runs the seatbelt under the arm rests to place it properly on her body. If your child is on the shorter side, there’s also an attached adjustable shoulder belt guide to bring the seatbelt down low enough to cross her collarbone.

That’s it. It’s not a folding booster car seat, but at 2 pounds it’s one of the lightest booster seats on the market. It’s also incredibly affordable, coming in right around $20. I’ve used it for multiple kids ranging from 6 to 10 and the fit is good on all of them. Even if you never plan to use it for travel, this is a great one to have on hand as a spare since it’s the cheapest booster seat you can buy.

Check out my quick take:

The Cosco Rise is also the narrowest booster seat aside from Bubblebum at just 15″. That makes it a viable booster seat for 3-across, especially since it’s narrower at the back where your child will need to reach the buckle. We managed to squeeze one into the middle seat of our old CR-V between another narrow booster seat and an adult!

The biggest downside of the original version is the sparse padding, including none on the arm rests. This isn’t the seat my kids typically want to ride in for more than about 30 minutes, and we probably wouldn’t choose it for a long road trip if we had another choice. I recommend that you spring for the LX for just an extra $3-5, as it has more padding including on the arm rests.

Note that the minimum height for this booster seat is 43″ – many kids won’t reach that until almost 6 years old. Our son didn’t get there until almost 7 years old, so parents of shorter kids may need to look elsewhere . But the Cosco Rise LX may be the best booster seat for 6 year old globetrotters who need more hip room and prefer a stable seating area. On the other end of the spectrum, the Rise may not offer quite enough thigh support for the oldest booster riders since the seat is on the shallower side; at 11 years old, my son usually refuses it.

At 2 pounds, the Cosco Rise booster seat is one of the lightest booster seats available. It’s also extremely affordable ! If your child is ready for a backless booster and you don’t mind the extra size or weight compared to the Bubblebum or if your child has outgrown the small seat of the Bubblebum, this just might be the best booster seat for travel.

Chicco GoFit Plus review

travel car seat mifold hifold

Key stats: -Weight 5lbs -Backless booster size limit 4yo/40lbs/38″ to 110lbs/57″

Pros: ✔ Great padding ✔ LATCH to secure it when unoccupied ✔ Nice, removable/foldable cupholders ✔ Long arm rests ✔ 8 year expiration

Cons: ✘ The 57″ height limit means tall kids might need another booster down the line ✘ Seat isn’t wide enough for kids at the top of the growth chart

We own the Chicco GoFit and love it! (Actually, if I’m being honest we now own four Chicco GoFits and three of them are permanently in my van.)

The padding is nice and squishy, the arm rests and cup holders are great and the price is very reasonable. It’s not terribly wide and the cupholders fold in to help it play nicely with other car seats. Installing the booster seat with LATCH is just as easy as with all of our other Chicco car seats.

This is one of the best car booster seat options for kids who are on the smaller end of the growth chart. If you have taller or broader kids, the seat may not be wide enough to hold them until the end of their booster days. There’s also a 57″ standing height limit, which may not work for the tallest kids.

This is the booster seat we use at home and the one we take for our child when we know we’re going to be doing a lot of driving at our destination. It’s extremely comfortable and has a great carry handle integrated into the back of the seat (it’s where the back would attach if you’d bought it as part of the KidFit highback booster seat, which we also have and like). On some planes my son has put the GoFit at his feet, while on other flights he’s put it in the overhead bin.

If you want to save a little money and a little weight, the original Chicco GoFit weighs about a half pound less than the Chicco GoFit Plus – the only differences are the lower anchors and fancier armrest fabric on the Plus.

Harmony Youth booster seat review

travel car seat mifold hifold

Key stats: -Weight 2 lbs -Backless booster size limit 30-100lbs, 34-57″

Pros: ✔ Extremely light ✔ Bargain price ✔ Good seatbelt fit

Cons: ✘ Doesn’t fold ✘ Limited padding

There’s beauty in simplicity. The Harmony Youth booster seat has been around for a decade but it still gets the job done. There’s not much to this seat, but there doesn’t really need to be.

It’s an extremely lightweight backless booster seat at just 2 pounds, so it should be easy enough for kids 6 and up to carry this on their own. The Harmony Youth booster gets excellent ratings for providing a safe fit for kids and it includes a shoulder belt adjustor strap for kids on the lower end of the allowed size range.

It’s also a solid choice to use at home, whether for your own kid or to toss in the trunk for an impromptu carpool. The best part? It’s one of the cheapest booster seats around.

The only downside for hard-core traveling families is that it won’t fold up to fit inside a backpack or luggage. You can definitely put it inside your checked hard-sided luggage or your child can carry it on and put it under the seat in front of her (or in the overhead bin), but if your travels will involve hopping on and off trains or taking Uber in a city just know that this booster seat stays at its full size.

Tips for traveling with a booster seat on an airplane

When you’re shopping for a portable booster seat, it’s important to remember that booster seats are not FAA-approved . That means you can’t use a booster seat on an airplane. From a safety perspective, that’s fine: your child will be over 40lbs, so the airplane seatbelt will secure her properly. But what should you do with her booster seat so it’s not lost or damaged?

Take it on board! There are a few ways to manage this. One option is to buy a folding booster seat from the list above. Some of these look absolutely amazing and we’re excited to try them! They fold up small enough to fit in the overhead bin of a plane or even in your child’s carry-on backpack so that you’re never separated from them. This won’t be an issue with any of the backless boosters we’ve recommended.

If you’re traveling with a highback booster seat the other option is to detach the bottom from the back and put the back in a suitcase. It’s ok to check the back that way because it’ll be protected by the suitcase and padded by clothing. You’d then carry the backless part of the booster on-board with you and put it in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of your kid. The only risk is if your luggage is lost or delayed, but at least in a pinch you could use the backless portion of the booster on its own.

Best booster seats for travel FAQs

Most children are ready for the responsibility of sitting correctly in a booster seat after 5 years old, but sometimes not until 7 or even 8 years old. Don’t rush it! If they can’t sit properly in the booster seat, it won’t keep them safe in an accident.

There’s no single best option. Once your child is big enough and mature enough to ride in a booster seat (usually starting 5-7 years old), you’ll need to evaluate the options on this list to find the one that’s the best match for her size and the type of trip your family is planning.

The mifold booster seat passes all Federal crash testing in the US, otherwise it couldn’t be sold here. That said, the seatbelt fit is not consistently in line with how we expect booster seat fit to look. Namely, the lap portion of the belt often sits mid-way on a child’s thighs in a mifold rather than on the strong hip bones. The fit seems to vary by car and child, so it may not be a reliable choice for families who can’t predict which car they’ll be riding in on a trip.

Thanks for this awesome post! I’m intrigued by the Ride Safer Vest. It seems very appealing in many of the safety features and of course the lightweight aspect, but I’m concerned about the lack of a back for the side impact protection as well as the ability to lean against it to sleep. I’m curious why you say it’s better for kiddos that sleep in the car? Also, how often are there tethering systems in the middle seats of vehicles? My son is 4.5 yrs old, 39 lbs, and 43″ tall. During normal times we travel quite a bit, including long trips in foreign countries where he would fall asleep in the car…I’m torn between this lightweight vest option vs. a 2-option booster seat (high backed and converts to low back). Thanks!

Thanks so much for stopping by! The Ride Safer doesn’t offer side impact protection (which is the same concern as a backless booster); if possible, it’s great to use the vest in the center for extra protection.

When you use it with the top tether, it prevents a sleeping kid from slumping over. A highback booster offers some side support that can help kids stay upright when they fall asleep, but a backless booster doesn’t support sleeping kids at all.

In the US, it’s extremely common to find top tether anchors in the center seats for sedans and small SUVs. Three-row vehicles are more variable – typically both captains chairs and one or two in the back (but sometimes three). In countries outside of US, Canada and Western Europe finding a top tether anchor is really variable. But we have found them in Australia, NZ, Argentina, Chile and beyond (I can’t promise always in the center seat, as we had each of our kids outboard).

At 4.5, a booster seat isn’t a safe choice – especially for a child who falls asleep in the car. Most 4 year olds can’t stay in position properly 100% of the time, which is what’s necessary for a booster seat to be safe. If the vest doesn’t suit your needs, check out these choices . If you wait until your son is a little older (and heavier) and ready for a booster seat, the hifold booster seat might be worth considering – it offers side impact protection, support for sleeping and is approved in EVERY country except Australia.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you SO much for the incredibly detailed post!! It was super helpful for us as we are embarking on our full time travel adventure with 4 children. We are going to try the harness after reading several of your detailed posts. Thank you!! Olivia Kimball from The Minimalist Travel Family

Congrats on going full time! It was an amazing period for our family. If you ever have any questions, feel free to drop me a line.

Safe travels, Melissa

Have you had a chance to test the WhizRider? It seems similar to the other vest option but looks a little simpler to use…

Thanks for stopping by! Another CPST is writing up her review on it for me as we speak 🙂 Her initial impression (and mine) is that the WhizRider fit can be more challenging for kids on the smaller end of the approved range. It also doesn’t have the same structure to it, so it really just positions the seatbelt while the Ride Safer also spreads crash forces through the child’s torso instead of concentrating the in a few spots. WhizRider anticipates offering a top tether in the future but they don’t have it available yet.

If you want to share your child’s age, height and weight I’m happy to help you narrow down the choices to find the best one for your family.

I love all of your detailed content. Thank you. Have you had a chance to review the Wayb Pico? I am intrigued by it but the cost gives pause and some of the other reviewers say the bottom buckle is too short to allow the child to grow into it longer.

Hi Leighann,

Thanks for stopping by! My kids were too old by the time the Pico was released but one of my colleagues reviewed it for me and I also have tons of feedback from traveling families who use the Pico. Check out this in-depth WAYB Pico review and let me know if you have any questions.

Safe travels,

Hi, is the Ride Safer vest approved throughout the EU? Where can I find info on requirements by country? Heading to France and Spain soon with a 3.5 and 5.5 yr old. Thanks!

Thanks for stopping by! Unfortunately the current version of the RSTV is not approved anywhere in Europe on its own. There is an EU-approved backless booster than can be used in conjunction with the vest for your older one. Here’s my full take on car seats for traveling in Europe .

We bought a whizrider about a year ago for carpool and travel, but recently I noticed they stopped selling it at typical retailers. They put a letter on their website recently that said it wasn’t recalled, “but NHTSA has informed us that the WhizRider does not meet the definition of a Child Restraint System as defined in FMVSS 213”. Help! What does this mean? Is it not legal for me to use it anymore? If it helps, I am located in CA but plan to travel to MD soon and was going to use it..

I’m sorry you’re caught in the middle of this sticky situation. This is an ACTIVE topic of conversation in CPST circles.

Here’s the background: FMVSS213 has both design standards and performance standards. The makers of WhizRider have tested to the performance standards. However, the vest doesn’t fit neatly into any legally defined category of design standards. Does it appear to hold the seatbelt in place properly for kids age 6+? In my experience with my own kids, yes. But the reason you’ve never seen a review of it here on my site is because I haven’t been comfortable promoting a product that technically doesn’t meet FMVSS213.

What that means for you: If you live in a place where your child is required by law to use a booster seat based on age and size, WhizRider is not an option. If you are traveling to a state where the law doesn’t require your child to be in a booster seat (for example, a 7 year old in Florida) you may use it.

I know this is a crappy situation for you to be in. If you share your child’s age and height, I’m happy to help you evaluate your options.

Has your opinion about the Bubblebum changed at all in the wake of the computer model submarining question?

We used the Ride Safer vest when my kiddo was smaller and loved it (she used to pretend she was an astronaut or a racecar driver) but now she’s a very tiny 8 year old and we’re looking for a travel booster seat. She has a high-back booster as her regular seat, and we have a Graco Turbo as our carpool/visiting friend seat (visiting friends are ALWAYS bigger!), and we’re traveling a couple of times this year. I’m trying to decide whether it makes sense to bring the Turbo or get something more portable. I had been leaning toward the Bubblebum, but now I’m worried about it. What do you think? Bring the one we have, replace it with the Harmony or RightGuide (or maybe the super-cheap Cosco?), or relax and get the Bubblebum?

I’m interested in using the Ride Safer Vest for our next trip to NYC. Would you say that it’s more important to position our daughter in the middle of the back seat (for more side protection), or in a side seat that allows for the top tether (assuming the middle seat does not have that option)? She is 7. In the city/in a cab, she would be positioned between me and my wife. We’ll also be doing a trip to Chicago and would like to use the same travel seat/vest. Part of our trip will involve driving on the interstate out to the suburbs. Do you trust this vest at interstate speeds? In this case, she would be alone in the back seat (and positioned in the middle, if possible.)

Hi Christina,

Thanks for stopping by! These are EXCELLENT questions.

NYC: All passengers vehicles in the US (since 2001 model year) are required to have three top tethers. That means in a sedan the middle seat always has one. You’re right that the middle seat, being furthest from the point of impact, is a great choice for kids using the vest.

Longer drives: Assuming your kiddo is able to sit properly and follow directions, there’s no safety concern about using the vest at high speeds. We used it full-time for the better part of two years. If used correctly, the vest adjusts the vehicle seatbelt to fit a child’s body similar to how a booster seat does. You can find lots of fit tips (and a discount!) in my detailed Ride Safer Travel Vest review .

Hi! I am taking my kids on a trip to Texas and was planning to us the two Whizriders that we have, instead of lugging carseats. My kids are 7 and 3.5. After more research, now I’m wondering if I can even use the Whizrider legally in Texas. Do you happen to know?

I’m so glad you stopped by! If you purchased a WhizRider new from a retailer, you should have received a letter informing you that it does not conform to FMVSS 213. As such, they are not legal for children under age 8 in Texas (who are required to use a booster seat). The fit on younger children isn’t very good, so I wouldn’t ever suggest using it on a child who is under ~6. Check out the Bubblebum booster seat for your older child.

You’ll want to bring a harnessed travel car seat for your 3 year old – all boosters in the US now have a minimum age of 4 years old, but most kids don’t have the developmental readiness to sit properly 100% of the time until at least age 5.

I’m sorry for your disappointment. You may be able to ask for a refund from the retailer who sold it to you. Please let me know if you need any more recommendations for your trip!

Question, is there any reason not to buy the Ridesafer Gen 4? I’m looking at getting two (used 5-10 times and 4 years old). It would save me a lot of money, just wondering if there are any HUGE downsides to getting them new.

As with any child restraint system, proceed with caution when buying used. You need to ask lots of questions about its history: Was it washed according to manufacturer instructions (if ever)? Was it in any type of crash? Are there any signs of physical wear? Are all of the accessories and manual accounted for?

I’ll say that our Gen 4 eventually had the buckle velcro separate from the body after HEAVY use, and SafeRide4Kids replaced it free of charge. If you choose to buy a new one, use coupon VOYAGE for a discount.

In terms of product changes, the Gen 5 runs bigger (not a good thing in my opinion) and it has an easier to use buckle plus fabric covering the tether attachment points.

Hi! We have 9yo twins who will (hopefully?!) be hitting that 50lb threshhold sometime soon (they’re between 45-49 (!!!) pounds). They’re both at just over 4 feet tall. One falls asleep in every car ride – after some investigation, it looks like she has a form of motion sickness that basically makes her pass out after about ten minutes in the car. Even in the current high-back booster (not travel-friendly at all – it’s the Clek Oobr highback), she pitches forward against the seatbelt when sleeping. We had a fold up travel seat that isn’t sold anymore – super heavy and bulky for travel. In this case, what would you suggest as the best option for travel? Thanks for any ideas!

What is the Mifold Hifold Booster Car Seat?

Mifold Hifold Booster Seat Review : Image: Amazon

Mifold Hifold booster car seat is a high back booster that can be adjusted to suit your child from 4 years old to about 9 years. Known as the Mifold Hifold Fit-and-Fold Highback Booster because it can be folded down so small that it can fit into a car trunk, under an airplane seat, or even for easy carrying around.

Designed by the Mifold company, this car seat is adjustable in 4 key areas – the seat width, body width, head width, and height.

At the time of writing this seat review, the hifold booster seat is the world’s most adjustable booster, with unique  “multi-fit” technology that can be adjusted to 243 individual settings. This car seat is designed for kids aged 4+, 40-100 pounds., and 40 to 59 inches tall.

The most interesting perk about the mifold booster seat is the multi-fold design which makes it very portable and easy to use. One would say it is the perfect travel booster seat for family travelers but we do not think so.

The Mifold Hifold does not come with a latch system, so it only relies on the vehicle seat belt for a tight installation. And so, we found that a lot of users say the seat wobbles the vehicle seat.

What comes with the Mifold Hifold Booster Car Seat?

Mifold Hifold Booster Seat Review : Image: Amazon

The booster seat model comes with a seat and a convenient carry strap for easy carry around when the seat is folded.  A cup holder is included in some other booster seats but the mifold hifold does not come with one.

The seat is integrated with a lot of adjustment and fold locks that make it easy to be folded and strapped with the carry strap.

Unlike traditional car seats, the hifold does not feature harnesses, nor is it flexible enough to be used as a backless booster, so because there is a back seat, you cannot place your child’s backpack on it while they are on the seat.

Who is the Mifold Hifold Booster Car Seat for?

Mifold Hifold Booster Seat Review : Image: Amazon

Designed for kids aged 4+, 40-100 lbs., and 40 to 59 inches tall. More specifically, the seat is for children from 4 to 9 years old. The seat is not appropriate for older kids because they would have outgrown it; in addition, as they grow older, a booster would not be necessary.

For parents who travel a lot for business, vacation or other reasons, the mifold hifold is the travel booster for you. You only need to fold it up and it becomes pretty mobile with the carry strap. There is even an optional protective carry bag.

In most cases, a four-year-old’s strength and mind are not mature enough yet for them to use a booster seat. Most child safety experts recommend that kids use a rear-facing seat until 4 years old, so it is reasonable to use a forward-facing booster seat for a year or two after that.

A five-year-old child would be the best to use the mifold hifold booster seat.

This travel booster seat is easy to use and has won many awards, including the 2019 Creative Child Product of the Year Award. Quite durable enough to be used for older kids, grandparents’ cars or for fitting three children in a row.

How to fold the mifold hifold?

Mifold Hifold Booster Seat Review : Image: Amazon

Folding the booster car seat is quite easy if you follow the steps in the manual. It is a process of adjusting and folding.

First is for you to adjust the headrest sides, seat backsides, and seat bottom sides inward using the width settings. Then adjust the seatback high down and fold the seat back sides inward.

Use the seatback fold lock to fold the seat, unlock and fold the headrest backwards and the headrest sides inward then buckle and tighten the storage straps.

The hifold Booster Seat is now at its most compact size. Store the hifold in a secure location such as the trunk, luggage compartment, or storage area.

#1. Safety – How Safe is the Mifold Hifold Booster Car Seat?

Mifold Hifold Booster Seat Review : Image: Official website

Total Safety Score = ⭐⭐⭐(3.4 out of 5)

In terms of Safety, we rate the Mifold Hifold based on the formula below:

Safety Score = Safety Features + Certifications + Recall/Quality Issues

Safety Features ⭐⭐⭐

Boosters produced by Mifold can be used in every country across the globe except Australia and Canada. The Hifold car seats have passed the strict German ADAC Automobile Association Testing and both seats comply with or exceed the following safety standards: ECE R44.04 in the UK and Europe, NHTSA FMVSS 213 in the US, the CCC in China, and the RSSR in Canada

We have seen car seats with incredible safety features aside from side impact protection. The only safety feature recognizable with this car seat is the 6 advanced impact protection zones, hence, the 3-star.

Mifold Hifold gets it right with the incredible adjustment features that allow it to grow with your child and also ensures optimal seat belt fit and comfort. But they do not pay close attention to advanced safety features when designing the seat.

Features like a tether to attach the seat to the vehicle, a harness system, or increased padding would have increased the use of the car for safety purposes.

Generally, the Mifold Hifold is safe with the presence of the side impact protection and seatbelt system but it may not offer maximum safety in intense situations such as during a serious car crash.

The seat is also not the best padded because the materials used are lightweight, they include EPE, EVA, PU foam, and a polypropylene shell.

The Mifold Hifold safety features include

  • Side Impact Protection.
  • Adjustable headrest

Safety Certifications ⭐⭐⭐

Motor vehicle

USA: This child restraint meets or exceeds all applicable requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213 for use in motor vehicles.

EU and the rest of the world, except Canada and Australia: This booster seat is approved to ECE R44.04, Group 2-3. This hifold Booster Seat is for use from 18 to 45 kg (40 to 100 lbs.). The hifold is approved by UN ECE R44 as a Group 2-3 booster seat with a weight range of 18 to 36 kg (40 to 80 lbs.).

The hifold has been successfully tested for use by children weighing 45 kg (100 lbs.) or less. This hifold Booster Seat is for use in passenger cars, multi-purpose vehicles (vans and SUVs), trucks, and school buses that have Vehicle Lap and Shoulder Belt systems.

Flight : This child restraint is not certified for use in aircraft. Aircraft seats do not provide a lap and shoulder belt system required to use a booster seat.

Recall/Quality Issues ⭐⭐⭐⭐

At this time, there are no known recalls for the mifold hifold booster seat. Some quality control issues such as low-quality strap locks were spotted.

We did not spot any reports about the funky smell of the products due to storage or delivery process issues.

#2. Durability: How Long Can You Use Mifold Hifold Booster Car Seat?

Mifold Hifold Booster Seat Review : Image: Amazon

Total Durability Score = ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐(4.5 out of 5)

In terms of Ease of Use, we rate the mifold hifold based on the formula below:

Durability Score = Range of Use + Expiration + Warranty

Range of Use ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Minimum weight limit recommendation is ‎40 pounds (18 kg) which should be equivalent to a 4+ years old child.
  • The maximum weight limit recommendation is ‎100 pounds (45 kg) suitable for children between 8 to 10 years of age. Pretty good range.
  • The minimum height limit recommendation is 40 Inches (101.6cm).
  • The maximum height limit recommendation is 59 Inches (149.8cm)
  • Weight range: 40 Pounds (18 kg) – ‎100 Pounds (45 kg)

Expiration ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The mifold hifold expires 7 years from the manufacture date. Most car seats have their product life due to the constant wear and tear and hot/cold temperature change with different places you go.

We have seen car seats with a 10-year expiration date, the Diono Radian 3RXT is the perfect example. However, we think 7 years is a good duration for a booster seat.

Warranty ⭐⭐⭐⭐

1-year warranty from the date of original retail purchase.

#3. Ease of Use: How Will Mifold Hifold  Car Seat Fit into Your car?

Total ease of use score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐(4.0 out of 5).

Mifold Hifold Booster Seat Review : Image: Official website

We rated the ease of use 4.0 -star because the installation process is pretty much a very long process and the seat is not stroller compatible.

In terms of Ease of Use, we rate the mifold hifold booster seat based on the formula below:

Ease of use =

Installation + Adjustability + Maintenance + Carry +Stroller Compatibility

Installation ⭐⭐⭐⭐

How to use the mifold hifold

Installing the mifold hifold is quite straightforward but requires a lot of processes of adjusting. So users found it pretty easy and fast to install while it took a long time for some others.

Ensure you check you read the user manual of the booster seat and the section about child’s safety seats in your vehicle manual before installation.

Mifold warns that your child should not slouch underlap belt, move the shoulder belt underarm or behind the back, or lean forward or sideways out of position during installation. You should also check the position of the hifold Booster and vehicle belt to avoid them becoming trapped by a movable seat or in a door of the vehicle during everyday use.

  • To begin the installation, unfold and place the hifold Booster on your vehicle seat in a seating location that has a Vehicle Lap belt and Shoulder Belt. Slide the hifold Booster back on the vehicle seat cushion in a manner that the back of the Headrest and Seat Bottom make contact with the vehicle seat back cushion.
  • If your vehicle’s back seat is adjustable, you may need to adjust the seat to ensure proper positioning of the hifold booster.
  • Seat your child on the booster seat with his/her lower and upper back in contact with the seatback of the hifold, not slouching down on the Seat Bottom with the lower torso forward of the Seat Back. Then adjust the bottom/lap seatbelt guides into position next to your child’s thighs.
  • Adjust the width of the seat backsides so they are close to your child’s shoulders. Also, adjust the width of the headrest sides so they are close to your child’s head then secure your child with the vehicle lap and shoulder belt. Check the manual on how to secure your child.
  • Adjust the height of the headrest to position the shoulder belt guide just above the top of your child’s shoulder and the full width of the shoulder belt is on the child’s shoulder. Snugly adjust the vehicle lap and shoulder belt around your child.
  • Snugly adjust the lap belt and then the shoulder belt. Ensure that the belts are positioned in the right way, such that they will not inconvenience your child.

Adjustability ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Mifold boasts that the hifold booster is the world’s most adjustable car seat. We agree with them on that, but we hope the claim lasts a long time because other booster seat brands are designing seats with incredible features.

The hifold features the MultiFit technology. It is adjustable in 4 separate areas including the seat width, the body width, the head width and the height. This means that the hifold not only grows with your child but also ensures optimal seatbelt fit and comfort, no matter the size or shape of the child.

This is not a harnessed car seat so there is no harness adjustment system.

Maintenance⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

First, Seat covers are an integral part of the booster seat and so you should never use this booster seat without its seat covers.

Fabric seat covers are machine washable in cold water, delicate or gentle cycle. No bleach. Line dry. Do not wring. Do not tumble dry. Do not iron. Remove the fabric cover prior to washing.

Plastic seat surfaces and white foam can be wiped down with a mild solution of soap and water. Wipe with clean water to remove soap.

Carry-Around ⭐⭐

Mifold hifold is not stroller compatible. Only meant to be used as a booster car seat.

  • Product Width: 17 in / 43.2 cm

Selected Critical Mifold Hifold Review

⭐⭐ “It’s foldable and compact, but not comfortable for the child. There’s no cushioning on the seat and because it is compact, it sits low… at the car’s seat level. This means that the child’s head is below the window level. My son is almost 4 and is at the 98% percentile in height. He can’t see anything outside in our SUV on this seat. We’ll be going on a long road trip and will have to return it, unfortunately. If it had a booster-like base and then the folding part, it would be perfect.” – Amazon review

⭐⭐⭐ “LOOKS AWESOME looks futuristic and the kids think it’s cool. Not sturdy enough for me and moves around a lot. I can deal with it as I use this as a backup and carry it around in my car in case of an unexpected emergency. A few weeks here and there would be amazing. However, so far it’s ok. Still using and want to test on road trips with 2 or more hours.” – Amazon review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “This seat has been awesome for our family. I have 4 kids and often need to fit 3 across in my van. Recently my oldest outgrew his car seat and needed to move to a booster. We bought another booster, but it just wasn’t small enough to fit. We bought a small inflatable booster, but it didn’t feel safe for everyday use, and my son said it wasn’t comfortable. Then someone recommended the HiFold, and I am impressed. Setup took about 5 minutes once I read the manual, the seat adjusts well to fit my son, and, best of all, leaves plenty of room to buckle in a 3 across situation! He says it’s comfortable to sit in, the adjustments are great, and I’m really looking forward to being able to fold it when we’re traveling.” – Amazon review

Conclusion of Hifold Booster Seat Review

Mifold Hifold Booster Seat Review : Image: Official website

We would recommend the mifold hifold booster seat for your booster needs.

It’s the most adjustable booster car seat out there, narrow enough to fit in 3-across most midsized vehicles and easily carry around when folded. The hifold is safe and comfortable for children between 4+ to about 9 years of age.  In addition to giving you peace of mind, the model’s design and range give you a little more flexibility as your baby grows.

Hifold Booster Seat Review: Does It Live Up To The Hype?

Sharing is caring!

It feels like we’re living in the golden age of innovative baby and kid gear. Brands are realizing that parents are willing to pony up for game-changing products that make life easier, and parents with ideas and know-how are getting involved in design as well.

The parents at the mifold company started with their groundbreaking folding backless booster seat a few years ago, and they’re back at it again with a new innovation:  the mifold hifold fit-and-fold highback booster car seat . In this in-depth hifold review, you’ll find out what it is, who it’s for and my honest impressions of the hifold booster seat after testing it out.

What is the hifold by mifold?

travel car seat mifold hifold

Hifold the fit-and-fold booster seat  is a high back booster seat that folds small enough to fit under an airplane seat.  Yep, that’s small .

When it’s unfolded it can shrink and expand every which way to fit a  huge  size range of kids – hence, the “hifold fit-and-fold” name.

The hifold does not have the option to use it as a harnessed car seat nor does it turn into a backless booster; what you see is what you get. If you’re looking for a folding car seat with a 5-point harness, check out  our review of the Wayb Pico .

Just like all booster seats, you can’t use the hifold on an airplane. However, it’s one of the only highback booster seats that’s small enough to take as a carry-on. There’s even an integrated carry strap to take it along with you and an optional protective carry bag!

In a stroke of genius, the hi fold booster seat creators decided to make this a travel booster seat for true globetrotters: the same model is certified for use in the US, Canada and EU (under the UN regulations). That means you can legally use it in  any country in the world except Australia  – but they’re working on that one too.

Who is the hifold fit-and-fold for?

travel car seat mifold hifold

The stated minimum to use the  hifold booster car seat  is 4 years old, 40 pounds and 40” tall; all of those have to be true to be within manufacturer guidelines.

But let’s have a moment of honesty… most four year olds don’t belong in a booster seat. Not only are their bodies still developing the strength to withstand crash forces, but their minds are still developing the maturity to follow directions. If a four year old drops her toy or her water bottle, she’s almost certainly going to reach down to grab it. If he wants to bother his baby sister in the next seat over, a pesky seatbelt won’t stop him!

Need an ultra-portable solution for your 3 or 4 year old?  Check out the  WAYB Pico  ( in-depth review here ).

So on the young end, who should be using the hifold? I’d put it at 5 years old. That’s when most kids are truly ready to ride in a booster seat. In an era when many child safety experts recommend keeping kids rear-facing until 4 years old, it’s reasonable to use a forward-facing harness for a year or two after that.

If you happen to have a very petite 5 year old, the hifold will fit your child really well! I’m impressed by how narrow it gets through the seat and torso and how low the back goes. It can be a struggle to fit small 5 (and even 6) year olds in some booster seats; for example,  one of our seats at home  has a minimum size of 44″ to use in high back booster seat mode – which our mature son didn’t hit until he was almost 8 years old!

What about at the top of the size range? The hifold is designed to fit kids up to 100 pounds and 59” tall! Wowza. I don’t have a kid that big to test it with, but it gets mighty tall as you’ll see below.

travel car seat mifold hifold

I suspect that true big kids – let’s say over 9+ years old – wouldn’t find it comfortable enough for more than a short ride. My son is 8.5 and small and the seat wasn’t deep enough to support him all the way through his thighs. Fortunately the boost isn’t very high so it was manageable, but I really can’t see a kid who’s 59” riding comfortably for long. So while the width may be ample for kids up to 100 pounds, I doubt the depth is.

Realistically, I’d say the useful timeframe for the hifold is 5 to 8 years old. That’s when most kids are riding in a high back booster seat at home too!

hifold booster seat install details

travel car seat mifold hifold

Before you can get to installing the hifold booster seat in your car, there is some preliminary set up. The manufacturer advertises 243 unique combinations thanks to the wide variety of adjustments, so it’s helpful to do a preliminary try with your kid  before  you’re in a high-pressure travel situation.

At the very least, you’ll want to know the correct width settings for your kid, which is easy enough. My petite 5.5 year old needed the narrowest widths for everything and my small 8.5 year old was on the medium widths for the seat and torso, but narrowest for the headrest.

Once you have the widths set, place the hifold on the car seat and thread the shoulder belt through the built-in belt guide. That’s the only real step to hifold installation!

You’ll need to set the seat height once you place it in the car. The manual says to start with it at its highest setting, but that’s probably overkill. Just start with it higher than you think you need it, have your child hop in and then start tweaking. Your kid will need to bend his head forward to grant you access to the lever, so it might take a few tries to get the height right.

There are a few important things to note before using the hifold in the car. First,  only  the lap portion of the seatbelt goes under the belt guides. We have some booster seats that require the shoulder belt to go under as well, but this isn’t one of them. Second, the hifold  requires a headrest behind it . If you’re using it on a really tall setting, raise the headrest accordingly. Be sure to check your car manual to be sure you’re allowed to leave the headrest installed.

For this hi fold car seat review, I installed in my 2007 Honda CR-V; it may be old, but it’s a pretty representative family car. I had no issues with hifold fit, and the seat is narrow enough to fit nicely even in cars with high side bolsters on the seats.

One more thing… if you’re driving around  without  the kid, try to remember to buckle the hifold into place since it doesn’t have LATCH. Otherwise it’ll become a projectile in an accident.

travel car seat mifold hifold

The hifold is impressively narrow no matter which setting you have it on. At its narrowest setting, the torso section is around 16.5″ wide; at its widest it’s around 18.5″. For comparison, the pretty average sized  Chicco KidFit  is about 20″ wide and the narrow  Clek Oobr  is almost 18″. Especially if you’re transporting kids who don’t need the full width of the hifold, it’ll be a snap to fit three across in many cars since this is such a compact booster seat.

How do you fold the hifold?

Folding the hifold is a combination of oragami, magic and practice. Reading the manual helps too! But I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could do it just using the stickers on the seat, since most parents don’t read manuals (#honesty).

It took me a few minutes to figure it out on my own, but I did get it basically right in the end. Do yourself a favor and check out the manual for guidance. The long and short is the make all the parts as narrow as possible, then start folding the side parts in, then start folding vertically.

When you’re done you’ll have a nice compact package that’s ready to go, whether under your child’s seat on an airplane or in the trunk of your car for the inevitable last-minute carpool.

Flying with hifold folding booster seat

travel car seat mifold hifold

We finally had an opportunity to test out flying with hifold on our family trip to Alaska . The quick summary: it was perfect . Apart from occasionally sliding off to the side (remedied by wrapping the shoulder strap around the suitcase handle), hifold sat nicely on top of our carry-on suitcase as we walked miles and miles through airports.

Once on board our flights, the hifold easily fit in luggage storage areas. If the plane had been full, I could have turned it sideways to take up less space or put it in front of our daughter’s seat. Thankfully the folded size is extremely compact, so even on a tiny regional flight it stows away.

travel car seat mifold hifold

Obviously hifold isn’t nearly as compact as a backless booster seat, even one that doesn’t fold. However, on our first full day in Alaska I felt vindicated in my decision to bring hifold for our trip rather than one of our many other travel booster seat options: our 7 year old was able to buckle her self as we hopped in and out of the car all day, but when she fell asleep on an unexpectedly late drive she stayed in position safely.

travel car seat mifold hifold

And there’s the rub. Even kids who are normally perfect booster riders may wind up exhausted on vacation due to busy days and time changes (in our case, both). While our daughter was safely positioned in her booster seat, our 9 year old son was drowsy too and I had to continuously push him back in position (from the front seat, which is obviously not safe) in his backless booster. Honestly I wish that I had a hifold for both kids!

How does the hifold car seat compare to other travel booster seats?

Read more: Bringing your booster seat on an airplane

Bubblebum (left) compared with Ride Safer travel vest (right)

If you’re in the market for a highback booster, the hifold is definitely the most travel-worthy option! Others like the Baby Trend Yumi are too long when folded to work as carry-ons. And they’re way too big to consider taking with you for a day in the city that might involve hopping in an Uber. You can throw the hifold in a backpack or its well-designed travel bag and be on your way.

The closest competitor to hifold is the Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120 . That’s a very well-loved seat in the car seat community because it’s very narrow and extremely long-lasting, but it’s also more expensive than hifold and about 5lbs heavier. Still you may want to consider it if you’re interested in purchasing one booster seat that you can use for both home and travel until your child is 10-12 and doesn’t need a booster seat anymore.

hifold vs Ride Safer travel vest

portable car seat for travel

If you’re shopping for a 3-5 year old, you’re probably also considering the Ride Safer Travel Vest ( full review here ). The Ride Safer has the advantage that the top tether keeps even wiggly/sleepy kids from bending or slouching out of place. The vest is also a fraction of the size.

On the other hand, the vest can be tiresome to buckle over and over. If you’re doing a road trip that involves lots of stops, like a national park, you won’t want to bother getting your little one out of the vest every other minute. With the hifold, it’s no big deal.

I happened to be writing this review while on a cross-country flight. The minute we landed I had a terrible “ oh shit ” moment when I realized that we left the top tether for our Ride Safer back home. Since our daughter is still a car sleeper, I don’t feel confident using the vest without its top tether but unfortunately that’s just one more part to remember. One time my better half left it in a rental car and had to run back to get it! So the fact that the hifold doesn’t have any detachable-but-critical pieces is a huge saving grace.

The hifold also gives a little boost – not much, but every little bit helps when you have a small kid who’s eager to see out the window.

If you’re traveling overseas, the current Ride Safer travel vest may not be legal under the latest regulations even though older versions were. That’s a real shame, and I’ll be honest that we’ve always brought our own car seats to Europe including the vest. But if you want to feel confident that you won’t run into any legal issues, the hifold is a good choice.

hifold vs Bubblebum

Bubblebum is the best travel booster seat because it gives a great, consistent belt fit in nearly every car

We love our Bubblebum ( full review here ) and travel with it all the time for our older child. But we didn’t start using it until he was 6 years old, very mature and rarely slept in the car.

The Bubblebum clearly wins on portability – it only weighs about a pound and rolls up to the size of a side bottle. It also provides a great fit in every car we’ve tried, which is a lot.

But the Bubblebum has absolutely zero support for car sleepers. There were a few times during our gap year when our son fell asleep and slumped forward; I would reach back from the front seat and shove him back into place. Not exactly glamorous, or safe. If he’d been riding in the hifold he would have most likely just leaned on one of the headwings to sleep.

hifold vs mifold

travel car seat mifold hifold

How does the hi fold car seat compare to its older-but-smaller sibling, the mifold grab and go booster seat ?

Well, there’s obviously a huge difference in size. They just don’t even compare. The mifold is the smallest booster seat on the market.

But when it comes to fit and safety, I feel much more comfortable with my kids in the hifold than I would in the mifold. One big issue many car seat safety advocates and CPSTs have with mifold is that the lap belt guides sit really far forward, sometimes mid-thigh rather than at the top of the thighs – see my 7 year old daughter below. Some owners have also reported that the width-adjustable belt guides can sometimes adjust themselves unexpectedly.

Read more: Hands-on with the mifold comfort

travel car seat mifold hifold

There are two important differences: first, the hifold belt guides are positioned such that both of my kids had the lap belt in the right place. Not too far forward, not too far back. Second, the belt guides adjust with the rest of the seat base – and even when you want to adjust that width, it’s not a smooth movement that can happen on its own. There’s a lever you have to pull with one hand while you adjust the width with the other.

On the comfort side, many kids complain that the mifold lacks padding for long rides. The hifold seat has a little more padding to it fortunately. It’s still nothing like what our kids are used to in their usual booster seat and combination seat, but an improvement over mifold nonetheless.

Hifold review: my impressions

travel car seat mifold hifold

Overall, my kids and I like the hifold fit & fold booster seat . As you can see in the photos here, we had no issue getting a safe seatbelt fit on both of them thanks to all of the adjustments.

Advantages of the hifold fit and fold booster

  • Excellent choice for kids 5+ who are mature (including petite riders)
  • If you’re traveling out of the US, it’s legal almost everywhere!
  • Offers better sleeping support than Bubblebum or mifold
  • Easier in-and-out than Ride Safer travel vest
  • Compact enough to take as a carry-on on a plane
  • Fits a huge range of kids
  • No extra parts to remember
  • Doesn’t require a top tether, so it can be used anywhere there’s a lap-shoulder belt
  • Shoulder belt guide is more secure than some other booster seats we’ve used
  • Easy for kids to buckle on their own

Disadvantages of the hifold by mifold

  • It’s much bigger and heavier than the Ride Safer travel vest or the Bubblebum , so families are less likely to have it for unexpected Uber rides
  • Folding it can take some practice
  • Needs to be re-adjusted every time you unfold it
  • Shallow seating area may not be comfortable for bigger kids or longer rides
  • The price tag can feel hard for families to justify for such a specialized product (though it’s easier to swallow if you can pass it down to a younger sibling in a few years)
  • “Where’s the cup holder ?” says my 8 year old; you can buy one for an extra $10, but I think it should be included at this price point

Suggestions for hifold version 2

travel car seat mifold hifold

My biggest knock in this mifold hifold review is that it’s heavier and bulkier than other folding car seats that target the same age group. There’s one easy way to address that issue: make it fit fewer kids.

Crazy, right? Shouldn’t you want to fit as wide a range of riders as possible?

In reality, there shouldn’t be tiny 4 year old riding in a booster seat. Right there on the website it says “We recommend that children stay in a 5 point harness for as long as possible”.

On the upper end of the range, most 10-12 year olds wouldn’t find the shallow seat especially comfortable and they’re usually mature enough to move into a much smaller backless booster (especially for travel). In the photo above you can see that the hifold gets really tall – so tall that I had to lean it against the wall to keep it from falling over. I measured the top belt guide at 20″ – that’s taller than many traditional boosters.

While I haven’t done a deep dive into the hifold schematics, I suspect that narrowing the focus to 5-8 year old sizes could allow the designers to drop some weight (and maybe even a little size when folded). That would make the hifold more practical for travel and also give parents a more realistic impression of the useful lifespan.

Conclusion: Is the hifold worth buying?

travel car seat mifold hifold

As with all of the innovative, travel-specific gadgets on the market today, the hifold is meant for a specific niche. It’s not going to be the right product for every family, and that’s ok.

If you have a kid who is 5-8 years old and you’ll be traveling, the hifold is an excellent choice . It’s safe, it’s legal almost everywhere, it’s comfortable and it’s relatively portable. There’s truly a lot to love here for globetrotting families!

I also highly recommend it for families with mature 5 or 6 year olds who are on the smaller end of the growth curve. It’ll fit your peanuts really well, even when they don’t meet the minimum requirements for other popular booster seats.

Thanks to mifold for providing a hifold for review. All opinions are my own.

Compact Highback Booster Car Seat

Mifold Hifold highback belt positioning booster car seat portable compact

  • Where: Amazon

A portable new belt-positioning booster seat has hit the market. If you travel with your kids, have extended family who help with childcare, or just want a narrow booster seat for less than $150, check out the Mifold Hifold Highback Booster Seat .

Mifold Hifold Fit and Fold Highback Booster Seat on Amazon

This new booster seat folds up for compact carrying. It can fit under the seat in an airplane, meaning you don’t have to check your car seat and fret about it not showing up at your destination. The Mifold only works for kids ready to use a seat belt rather than a five-point harness.

With a weight range from 40-100 pounds and height requirements of 44 to 59 inches, the Hifold adjusts height and width to fit more kids properly. You can change the width of the seat bottom, chest area, and headrest to get a custom fit. The downside? Parents have to make more adjustments, and it can be trickier to install than regular highback boosters. It also does not have LATCH, so it has to be buckled in when kids aren’t using it to avoid becoming a projectile in the case of an accident. But the small size and portability offset some of these disadvantages.

While we rarely write about any products we don’t own, this car seat seemed worth sharing. It has better safety ratings than the original Mifold booster seat, which doesn’t include a highback and has issues with belt placement across kids’ hips for many children. We own a Ride Safer travel vest, which fits the bill for us. With our kids at ages six, eight, and ten, we don’t need another travel booster option. But if you don’t already own something portable or narrow, it’s worth exploring the Mifold Hifold highback booster seat.

travel car seat mifold hifold

Best car booster seats for older children

A car seat is one of the most expensive products you need to buy when you have a child, but arguably also the most important. In the UK, a booster car seat is used by a child once they reach the age of four until they are 12 years old or 135cm tall, whichever happens first.

If you’re going to be using a car seat for a number of years you’ll want to make sure you’re making a good investment in a product that will continue to protect your growing child, and keep them comfortable. The most common types of booster are either high back or backless.

What are the key things to look for in a high-back booster seat?

Once your child has outgrown their Group 1 car seat you will want to look for a Group 2/3 front-facing seat which is recommended for children aged four to 12 who weigh 15kg to 36kg. Most high-back booster seats in this category do not have a harness but instead, the car’s seat belt goes around the child and the seat. An increasing number of seats now also have Isofix connectors which secure the seat to anchor points in newer cars. This provides added security for the positioning of the seat and also stops it from moving around or flying forward when you’re driving with no children onboard and have to brake quickly.

A booster seat will raise your child high enough that the seat belt crosses their body in the right position - across their chest and pelvis - and keeps them secure and comfortable. High back seats also have side wings which are designed to protect a child’s head in case there is an impact.

Some high-back boosters will have an adjustable back and headrest which can be raised or lowered to fit the child using it. These seats can be used in the rear or front of a car but it’s safest to put them on a rear seat, especially if the front passenger seat is fitted with an airbag.

It’s best to keep your child in this type of seat until they have reached the maximum height and weight. Always check the manufacturer’s recommendations for the individual seat as they will vary from product to product.

What does i-size mean?

You might have seen that some booster seats have i-size in their name. This is a new safety regulation for child car seats (ECE R129) which was introduced in 2013. It was created to make car seats easier to fit, provide better protection from side impacts and to keep children facing backwards for longer. Meanwhile, i-size only applies to Isofix seats.

The idea is that all i-size car seats will fit all cars because they will all have Isofix anchors. This is safer than fitting a seat with the adult seatbelt alone. Children in i-size seats must stay rearward facing until they are at least 15 months old. However, some i-size/R129 seats can be used backwards until a child is 105cm, or around four years old, which many people are choosing to do now.

What is a backless booster seat?

A backless booster seat might be tempting to buy because it is cheaper and takes up little space. However, there are several reasons why we’ve chosen not to feature one in this roundup.

Backless booster seats don’t provide adequate crash protection for a child, especially if the car was hit from the side in an accident. There is also little to stop a child from smashing into the inside of the vehicle and hurting themselves if you were to swerve in an emergency.

While they are still available to buy, a 2017 law change means backless booster seats can only be made for children over 125cm tall and weighing over 22kg. Always check the label and make sure the child is in the recommended size for their age.

Cybex Solution T i-Fix R129 Car Seat

If treated well this is a booster seat which will last you nine years (from age three to 12) - not something that can be said for very many children’s products. It has loads of great safety features such as a reclining headrest and Linear Side-impact Protection. The headrest is also adjustable and the seat’s width can also adapt as your child grows so you can be reassured that every journey will be comfortable.

The seat will attach to your car’s ISOFIX anchors and a visual indicator will tell you when it’s installed correctly. The seat has an integrated air ventilation system which will be a bonus when travelling on hot days.

Maxi-Cosi RodiFix AirProtect Group 2/3

This high-backed booster seat is approved for children from 15-36kg which is around three-and-a-half to 12 years old. The RodiFix AirProtect is a really good quality product with some additional features which will keep young passengers safe. The AirProtect in its name refers to a special layer in the cushion of the head area and side wings which is designed to absorb the force of a side-impact crash. The seat also has very good side protection lower down in the seat for the lower back and hips.

This seat will continue to keep your child safe as they grow. The headrest is adjustable and the seat also reclines to provide even more comfort when out and about. Another advantage of this seat is that it has Isofix fixture points which gives an extra layer of security.

Britax Römer KIDFIX III M Group 2/3

The Britax Römer booster seat is a really popular choice which comes at a great price. Its features, such as an adjustable headrest and deeper seat, guarantees a comfy journey for its user. It has Side Impact Protection and also comes with a SecureGuard lap protector which helps reduce abdominal forces in the event of a crash.

Its Isofix fixtures means it is easy to install and you have the added peace of mind that it’s not going to move around at all. There are indicators to show you when the Isofix is in place properly and also to show you where the car’s adult three-point seatbelt should be placed. One downside of this seat is that it is quite upright so if your child is still partial to a car snooze, they may not be as comfortable as they would in another product.

At 54cm wide and 7.5kg this is one of the heavier booster seats on the list which may put some people off if they will be moving it in and out of the car regularly.

Mifold Hifold Fit and Fold Booster

Mifold have claimed their hifold product is the ‘world’s most portable high back booster’ and it’s true that at 4.6kg it is one of the lightest seats in this roundup.

The hifold is suitable for children from 90cm to 150cm tall and 15kg to 45kg. And this is a seat that really will grow with your child. It’s adjustable in four different areas - the headrest, height and width, shoulder width and seat width. This means it has a huge 243 different settings which will ensure the seat belt lies perfectly across a child’s lap and chest.

If you’re planning a holiday where you will need a car seat, the hifold could be the one for you. It folds down to just 25cm by 34.4cm and comes with a handy carry strap too. This means you could include it as your carry-on luggage on a plane as it will fit inside an overhead locker or under the seat in front of you.

One drawback of this product is that the seat isn’t as comfortable as others and some reviews have said that the seat cover is difficult to remove when it needs a wash. Another issue is that it doesn’t have Isofix attachments so is only kept in place via the seatbelt.

Joie Car Seat Signature i-Traver Carbon R129

Joie is a safe pair of hands when it comes to creating high-quality, safe products for babies and older children.

Their car seats are no different and the Joie i-Traver performs strongly when it comes to safety, comfort and easy installation. It has an adjustable headrest which can be fitted to 10 different positions. The Guard Surround Safety side impact panels are fitted to the exterior of the seat which means they would absorb the force of an impact before it reaches your child. This is an i-size seat so it can be fitted using a car’s Isofix anchor points or with a seatbelt by following well-marked belt guides.

As well as rating highly on safety features, growing legs are also well catered for with this seat which has a three-point extendable seat base. And there is no compromise in comfort with its padded armrests and soft, machine-washable fabric.

Cybex Anoris T i-size

Now, the price tag on this seat is slightly eye watering, but we’ve included this Cybex product because of its innovative safety features.

The forward-facing Anoris T i-size has an impact shield rather than an integrated harness, and this is where its own airbag is stored. The airbag means that if you were in a frontal crash it would inflate in milliseconds and protect a child’s head, neck and body.

The airbag feature means the Anoris is the safest car seat tested by ADAC, a vehicle insurance company which examines car seat safety to higher standards than the EU regulations. This would explain why this car seat is so much more expensive than others in this category. The other downside of this seat is that it is only suitable from 15 months up to six years old, or 21kg/115cm.

Other great features of this seat include LED indicators and a sound which emits if the support leg is not correctly in place. It has Isofix connectors and the seat reclines to give maximum comfort when on longer journeys. At 12kg, it is a heavy car seat and will take up quite a lot of space in your car. And once your child gets too big, you will need to buy another seat for them to use until they are 12.

Chicco My Seat R129 Car Seat

This is a really comfy booster seat which comes with three reclining positions, an adjustable headrest and an insert to keep little ones comfortable. The seat is suitable for children from 76-150cm (15 months to 12 years) and has both ISOFIX and Top Tether installation options.

There are 13 different positions for the headrest and seatbelt so this really is a seat which will grow with your child. It is made of breathable fabric which means your child won’t get too hot. The five-point harness can be used until your child is 21kg when the three-point vehicle belt can be used. There is also a belt positioner which can be used to make sure the lapbelt is at an optimal position to protect your child’s pelvis in the case of an impact.

This is a great seat which comes with many safety and comfort features and is at a competitive price.

Graco Eversure Lite R129 Backless Booster

This is a backless booster seat which is suitable for seven to 12-year-olds and children from 135-150cm. While this may not be a seat you’d want to use for long journeys, it could be handy to have in the boot of your car if you find yourself transporting friends’ children. It only weighs 2.1kg but has a comfy memory foam seat and secret cup holders which children will love storing snacks or toys in.

One drawback of this product is that it doesn’t have ISOFIX points so it is simply kept in place with the vehicle’s seatbelt. This is why we anticipate parents may use one of the high-back models for frequent, longer journeys.

Buy now £39.99, Amazon

Recaro Mako 2 Core i-Size

This is a car seat which is quick to install and comfy to sit in. It is suitable from 100-150cm and can be attached to your car’s ISOFIX points.

The ergonomic design with a new wider headrest is not only safer but also more comfortable for its occupant. The seat foam will ensure your child doesn’t feel any bumps in the road and the hip and shoulder protectors are also important safety features. If your car doesn’t have ISOFIX points the seat can be held in place with the three-point seatbelt within the car.

A great investment that will last years.

Buy now £139.00, Kiddies Kingdom

The Cybex Solution T i-Fix is the top pick from our round-up. Not only does it have great safety features such as its side-impact collision protection but it will also keep your child sitting comfortably, whatever age they are.

The adjustable headrest and shoulder width mean there is room for them to grow, all while watching the world go by through the car window.

While it is one of the more expensive seats on this list, it comes with a three-year guarantee if you buy it from John Lewis .
