Does your cruise call at Le Havre , France? If you’re lucky enough to stop off in our home town, here’s a guide full of tips and our selection of the best attractions in the cruise port of Le Havre over the course of a day: architecture, nature, history, art, shopping, games… Stay in town or explore Normandy with one of the shore excursions from Le Havre.
1. Explore Le Havre or go on an excursion?
It depends on what you want to see and your criteria: price, time on the road… Here are the pros and cons of each option.
Why choose to visit Le Havre?
- Surprising modernist architecture, listed by Unesco. The town was rebuilt by Auguste Perret after being destroyed during the Second World War.
- Seafront, with beach (but sand only at low tide)
- Works of art in the city
- No time wasted on the road
- A city that inspired Impressionist painters
- It’s not typical French architecture, not the image you get of France when you come from abroad.
Why choose excursions from Le Havre?
- Excursions can take you to some of the most famous places in Normandy and even France: Honfleur, Etretat, Mont-Saint-Michel, D-Day beaches, Rouen, Giverny…
- Places of great historical value
- See options on Getyourguide or Viator
- Larger budget
- Honfleur, Etretat and Rouen are less than an hour’s drive away, but the other sites are much further, so you’ll spend more time in transport than on site.
In section 10 of this article, we present the options in greater detail.
2. How do I get to the center from the cruise terminal? Distance, shuttle
The Terminal (which is currently being rebuilt) is not far from the city center. You can reach downtown Le Havre:
- on foot: the walk is flat, partly in the port and partly in the city – one of the sites of interest closest to the cruise terminal is the container arch (not far from the MUMA museum). It’s a 25-minute walk to reach it.
- by cab: about 10 euros (but there aren’t many cabs or Ubers in the city)
- with your cruise line’s shuttle: MSC, Royal and Aida have a shuttle
- with the Bee-Le-Havre Shuttle: if you book a tour with them, they have a free shuttle at 10am.
3. Things to do in Le Havre cruise port: the must-sees
In one day in Le Havre, you can see:
- Perret architecture in reinforced concrete
- The astonishing Saint Joseph’s Church , with its 107-metre-high hollow tower and 12,768 blown-colour tiles
- The MuMa Museum , which is glazed to delicately bring the skies and light of Normandy into the works of the painters on display.
- Le Havre Cathedral , one of the few buildings spared from the destruction of World War II (with elements from the 16th and 17th centuries)
- The waterfront, which inspired many Impressionist artists, with a long, car-free promenade
- The many works of art in town, especially the arches of colorful containers and the UP3 statue on the beach.
- Les Halles centrales, a small covered market in the city center
- Street art, including the Le Gouzou character by artist Jace
Find out more in our article on Le Havre’s top attractions . And see our suggested 1-day walking itinerary, further on in the article.
4. Free activities in Le Havre
You can admire the architecture, stroll along the waterfront, discover the works of art, enjoy the many children’s play areas, see how the French shop at Les Halles Centrales covered market… If you like walking, you can also climb up to the Hanging Gardens, set on a former military fort with views over the city. Access is free (except for greenhouses).
5. Getting around Le Havre
Option 1: on foot Downtown Le Havre is very accessible. It’s very flat, with lots of wide sidewalks. Only in certain parts of the upper town are the roads on a slope: to get to the orientation table, the hanging gardens or the Sainte-Adresse bunkers.
Option 2: by bike At the cruise terminal, it is possible to rent bicycles
Option 3: local buses But you can’t buy tickets on board. You need to find a purchase terminal.
Option 4: Tourist bus The Bee-Le-Havre company has a bus that gives a guided tour of the town (but it’s not a hop-on-hop-off).

6. Where to shop in Le Havre
If you want to go shopping in Le Havre, you have several options:
- stores in downtown Le Havre, with unique décor, jewelry and clothing boutiques (as well as souvenir stores)
- the Coty shopping center, with a wide range of clothes, but only well-known brands
- Les Docks shopping center
Find out more in our article on shopping in Le Havre .
7. What to do with children in Le Havre
If you’re visiting Le Havre with children, they should love the container arch and the architecture of Le Volcan (the big white building at the heart of the city). And there are plenty of playgrounds in the town center for all ages. We’ve listed them in this article , along with their addresses and game types.
8. Where to get coffee in the morning?
For lovers of coffee, croissants and other French delights, here are a few suggestions.
Take the time to visit one of our roasters. Le Havre has been the world’s leading coffee-importing port since 1815, and was even number one until the 1930s. The city has preserved its roasting know-how.
For example, the Duchossoy burner installed in Le Havre since 1950, which offers a wide range, or the coffee shop “Ombra Coffee Roaster” in the pedestrian streets, which has been offering specialty coffees since 2019.
And to buy good products to enjoy:
- croissants or baguettes: we recommend the Portier bakery around Les Halles Centrales
- macaroons: we recommend the Auzou chocolate shop around Les Halles Centrales
- Artisanal ice creams: we recommend the Hautot chocolate factory, near Halles Centrales.
Please note that many stores are closed on Mondays, and many take vacations during the first 15 days of August.
9. Where to eat lunch?
In Les Havre, you’ll find many different restaurants: brasseries, Michelin-starred restaurants, world cuisine, crêperies… Among our favorites:
- Restaurant Calice et Mandibule : Claire and Manu’s canteen, with a menu that blends local Normandy produce with Senegalese and Moroccan flavours.
- Restaurant Le Margote: creative bistronomic cuisine from a chef who loves Normandy produce
- Restaurant Jean-Luc Tartarin: Michelin-starred gourmet cuisine with precision and mastery
Many are closed on Mondays. And reservations are recommended.
See our article on the best restaurants in Le Havre .
OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Normandy
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).
- Think of the complete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early .
How to get there?
- Rent a car for the day: 45min drive
- Most cruises offer excursions to Honfleur, sometimes combined with Deauville.
- Or you can book an excursion on Getyourguide – see program and availability
- Bee Le Havre also offers excursions
- You can also get to Le Havre station. Buses run between Le Havre and Honfleur (via the Pont de Normandie). This is line 122 . But be sure to leave enough time to get back. The bus does not drop you off at the cruise port.
- Or book a private shuttle: see details and availability
Visiting Étretat from Le Havre
One of our favorite places to visit in Normandy is Etretat, known for its impressive white cliffs and needle-shaped rock formation. And as French people, we grew up with the stories of the fictional character Arsène Lupin, who hid his treasure inside. The heart of the town has charming old houses typical of the area and from the beach you can climb the cliffs on both sides for incredible views.
- You can take the 509R bus, which runs every hour or hour and a half. It takes 1 hour each way. Please allow plenty of time to return to the boat. He leaves and returns to the bus station.
Visit the D-Day landing beaches from Le Havre
Those interested in the history of the war can take a shore excursion from Le Havre to visit the landing beaches and some of the World War II monuments.
However, you should be aware that you’ll be spending a lot of time in transit. Omaha Beach is a two-hour drive from Le Havre, so you’ll need to allow at least 4 hours’ travel time in a day.
- Book a cruise excursion
- Book a specific excursion
American-friendly tours include Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, the Overlord Museum and the American Cemetery. See program and book
Canadian-friendly tours include Juno Beach, the Canadian Cemetery and Abbaye d’Ardenne. See program and book
Visiting Rouen from Le Havre
Rouen is a cultural and historical city. In terms of historical buildings, it is the most fascinating to visit. It has a high concentration of listed buildings and just walking around is fascinating. And its cathedral is one of the most impressive in Normandy and France, and has played an important role in history. Find out more in our Rouen article .
- Rent a car: 1h drive
- Taking the train from Le Havre station
- Book an excursion on your cruise
Visiting Paris from Le Havre
Paris is a two-hour drive from Le Havre, if there are no traffic jams. So 2h30 to 3h often. Personally, we don’t recommend a trip to Paris for the few hours you have in Le Havre. You’ll spend several hours on the road, but only 3 hours discovering this immense city…
Visiting Mont-Saint-Michel from Le Havre
Mont-Saint-Michel is a 2? hour drive from Le Havre, if there are no traffic jams. Personally, we don’t recommend an excursion to Mont-Saint-Michel for the few hours you have in Le Havre. You’ll spend several hours on the road, for only 3 hours this place…
11. What to do when it rains in Le Havre
Le Havre is not as humid as other parts of Normandy, but the city is located in the north of France, by the sea, and therefore receives frequent showers. If it doesn’t rain much, I recommend wearing a good poncho and still enjoying the sunny day program. And you never know, the rain may stop. The main areas you can still enjoy on a rainy day:
- The underground of the Volcano and its library
- The rue de Paris because it has covered passages for window shopping and the cathedral
- The MuMa Museum
- Les Halles Centrales, a covered market
12. Departure or arrival in Le Havre: best hotels
If you decide to spend a night in Le Havre before or after your trip, here’s our selection of the best hotels:
WHERE TO STAY IN Le Havre
Our favorites: neighborhoods and hotels
On the waterfront:
Hilton Hotel with its modern decor and balconies – see prices, photos and availability .
Downtown, in the heart of Perret architecture:
Hôtel Pasino, for ultra-spacious rooms – See prices, photos and availability
Hotel Vent d’Ouest, a charming place to stay – See prices, photos and availability

Le Havre Cruise Port
Le Havre port is France’s largest containership port and its second-largest cargo port (after Marseille ). The port consists of a series of canal-like docks and is operated by the national agency “Grand Port Maritime du Havre”. Port of Le Havre is also a popular port of call due to its developed port facilities and capacity to accommodate the world’s largest cruise liners.
Cruise Terminal Le Havre (Terminal Croisière Le Havre) is located at the site called Pointe de Floride (Florida tip). The terminal consists of two docking piers located on Quay Roger Meunier and Quay Pierre Callet . The terminal building features facilities including a Tourist information office, free wi-fi, a couple of shops, security screening, check-in counters, a passenger lounge area, a taxi rank and car rental options.
Le Havre city center is located 2 km/1.3 miles from Le Havre cruise terminal. The walk is on flat surfaces, however, it’s not very scenic as you need to go around the ferry terminal (port Le Havre regularly serves ferries to Portsmouth, UK) and Bassin de la Manche. It takes approximately a 25-minute walk to reach Le Havre downtown.
Alternatively, cruise lines/port authorities may offer shuttle bus transfers into the city, usually for an extra fee. Make sure you check this onboard before arriving at the port. Taxis are available in the terminal.
Le Havre port has announced projects to build three new terminals on the Pointe du Floride site and renovate the existing facilities. You can get updates on these projects at https://www.havre-port.com/

7 Best Things to Do in Le Havre Cruise Port
1. le havre.
The bustling city of Havre is best known for its unique post-WWII architecture and its UNESCO-listed city center. After the heavy 1944 bombings, the city needed to be quickly rebuilt and the renowned Belgian architect Auguste Perret was in charge of the project.
The majority of the buildings were built in reinforced concrete, which gave the city a somewhat grey and dim look. However, Le Havre is nowadays a vibrant city featuring amazing museums, a scenic public beach, great shopping opportunities, eateries and much more. While there, don’t miss out on visiting the Museum of Modern Art André Malraux (MuMa Musée d’art moderne André Malraux) which has the second most important collection of Impressionist paintings after the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
The iconic St Joseph’s Church with its 110-meter high tower dates from 1950 and is a symbol of Le Havre representing the city’s rebirth after the war. The church was made of steel and concrete and offers outstanding panoramic views of the city.
One of the most recognized structures in the city is the modern Le Volcan cultural center designed in the shape of a volcano. While in Le Havre, you can also visit the beautiful, 16th-century stone Le Havre Cathedral , Natural History Museum, or Graville Abbey with its museum housing one of the finest collections of medieval statuary in Normandy.
Check out Le Havre sightseeing tours and activities
Le Havre cruise port is the main gateway to the French capital. Paris is located 200 km/124 miles (a 2-hour 30-minute drive) from the port of Le Havre each way. Due to the distance, the smart idea would be to visit Paris with a cruise ship organized shore excursion because the ship will wait for you in case the tour returns later than scheduled. However, cruise ship shore excursions are often too expensive, so booking a private round-trip transfer to Paris or a tour with an independent tour operator may be a cheaper option.
Alternatively, you can go to Paris by train (which is not recommended as the trains in France are not always reliable, especially when the ship is in port for a day).
Cruise lines normally offer various shore excursions to Paris. Some of them are guided, while some of them are “On Your Own” options that offer a round-trip transfer with a few free hours to explore Paris on your own (you usually get 3-4 free hours). If you choose to explore Paris on your own, I highly suggest you read my article Paris in a Day: How to Plan a Perfect Day Trip to Paris from Le Havre where I share very useful tips and a full 4-hour itinerary that covers all the major landmarks of Paris!
Here are some of the Paris attractions not to be missed:
- Arc de Triomphe – The iconic triumphal arch stands at Place de l’Étoile at the top of the Champs-Élysées. It was built in 1836 to commemorate those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. It has an observation deck from where you can admire the outstanding views of Paris.
- Eiffel Tower – Gustave Eiffel’s 324-meter-high iron tower is the symbol of Paris and one of the most recognized landmarks in the world. It was constructed in the second half of the 19th century for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (the World’s Fair) and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tower offers the most spectacular views of the city and has three levels. It is highly recommended to visit the Eiffel Tower with a guided tour or to book the tickets in advance, as lines can be extremely long. The visit can take up to half a day depending on the queuing, so keep that in mind if you have limited time in the city.
- Louvre – The world’s most visited museum is housed in a historic palace in the heart of Paris and boasts a huge art collection including some of the best-known works of art, such as Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. With its striking Louvre Pyramid, it is one of the most visited museums in the world so be prepared for long lines. It takes almost a full day to visit some of the major works of art so it’s highly recommended to purchase the tickets in advance or book a guided tour.
- Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris – The impressive 12th-century cathedral is located on the Île de la Cité (an island in the Seine River) and is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in France.
- Latin Quarter – Home to numerous medieval churches and museums, Panthéon, Sorbonne University and several higher education establishments, Latin Quarter is the oldest district in Paris known for student life and authentic vibe. Here, you can wander around its medieval streets filled with authentic cafes, eateries and bookshops or visit the famous Luxembourg Gardens situated nearby.
- Orsay Museum (Musée d’Orsay) – Housed in a former railway station building, the museum features outstanding 19th and 20th-century European art collections. You need at least a couple of hours to visit the museum and it’s recommended to purchase the tickets in advance.

3. Normandy Beaches
Normandy is a historically important region because of the events that took place in 1944 when the Allied forces disembarked in Normandy to drive Nazis out of France. The beaches where the Allies disembarked are known as D-Day Landing Beaches and they extend over 70 km along the coast of Normandy. There are 5 of them: Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword Beach. The entire area consists of numerous WWII monuments, museums, cemeteries and memorials, and some of the most important are:
- The Landing Beaches
- Arromanches-Les-Bains
- Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial
- Pointe-du-Hoc Ranger Monument
- Overlord Museum
- German Battery of Longues-Sur-Mer
- The Memorial Pegasus
You can read about each of these landmarks more in detail in my article 12 Gorgeous Places to Visit on a Cruise to Normandy
Cruise lines normally offer organized shore excursions to D-Day Beaches and these are full-day tours as the driving distance to the sites may take up to a few hours. If you decide to book a shore excursion, make sure you carefully check the itinerary as not all of the places listed above are included in each of the tours (it would take a few days to visit all the sites!).
Normally, tours dedicated to guests from the USA include Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, Overlord Museum and the American Cemetery and Memorial, while the tours dedicated to Canadian guests include the visit to Juno Beach, Canadian Cemetery and Abbey d’Ardenne.

4. Mont Saint-Michel
The iconic Mont Saint-Michel is one of France’s most visited destinations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This tidal island with its impressive 8th-century Mont Saint-Michel Abbey lies 217 km/135 miles (a 2-hour 45-minute drive) southwest of Le Havre cruise port.
Although Mont Saint Michel is located far from the port of Le Havre, there are numerous full-day shore excursions offered by the cruise line/independent tour operators. One day is enough to visit the island and the abbey, walk along its ramparts, enjoy spectacular views of the bay and visit the village. You can read a detailed Mont Saint-Michel review (as I went on a tour from Cherbourg) in my article How to Visit Mont Saint-Michel on a Cruise (from Le Havre and Cherbourg)
Check out Mont Saint-Michel tours from Le Havre
5. Honfleur and Deauville
The picturesque Honfleur is a port town located on Normandy’s Côte Fleurie (The Flower Coast), 23 km/14 miles (a 30-minute drive) southeast of Le Havre port. Honfleur is easily accessible via the bridge “Pont de Normandie” and you can go there by taxi, train, bus, or on an organized shore excursion.
Honfleur is best known for its colorful harbour lined with charming cafes, picturesque facades, cobblestone streets packed with eateries and authentic, typically French shops, “chocolateries”, “patisseries”, and so much more… Honfleur is so pretty so make sure you bring a camera to capture the beauty and colors of this wonderful place! Some of the historic landmarks that you can visit in Honfleur are The Church of St. Catherine , the largest wooden church in France, and The Church of Saint Etienne which houses the Maritime Museum.
Deauville is another beautiful place you can visit nearby and the majority of the shore excursions to Honfleur also include a visit to Deauville as the distance between the two is only 17 km/10 miles (a 30-minute drive).
Also called “Parisian Riviera”, Deauville is a popular seaside resort and an upscale holiday destination known for its Casino (the grand Casino Barrier de Deauville), prestigious golf courses, horse races and the annual American Film Festival. While there, make sure you explore the town’s chic boutiques, half-timbered buildings and elegant Belle Epoque villas, or head out to Plage de Deauville for a pleasant walk along the beach. If you are visiting Deauville straight from Le Havre cruise port, the distance between the two locations is around 43 km/28 miles (a 50-minute drive) each way.
Check out Honfleur and Deauville tours from Le Havre
Rouen is another French jewel, the capital of the Normandy region and one of the most beautiful French cities I’ve ever visited. The city lies approximately 98 km/61 miles (a 1-hour 20-minute drive) east of Le Havre cruise port and cruise lines may offer shore excursions to Rouen (depending on the ship’s time in port).
Rouen played a vital role in the Roman era and Middle Ages and grew into one of the largest and richest cities in Europe in medieval times. Its impressive history is more than 2000 years old and nowadays you can admire the city’s rich heritage on a walking tour around the city.
Rouen’s skyline is dominated by the awe-inspiring 12th-century Gothic Rouen Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen) that inspired the paintings of the Impressionist artist Claude Monet. The cobblestone Old Market Square is where Joan of Arc, a French heroine, was burned at the stake in 1431 during the Hundred Years’ War.
Nowadays, you can visit the Church of St Joan of Arc which was built on the place where she was burned, or visit the impressive Museum of Joan of Arc (Historial Jeanne d’Arc), located only a 10-minute walk from the square. Other highlights include Le Gros-Horloge , a 14th-century astronomical clock tower and the 14th-century courthouse where Joan of Arc was sentenced to death.
Rouen is cobblestone and medieval, packed with touristy shops, cafes and eateries. It is easily accessible via train from Le Havre, however, it is recommended to book a guided tour to learn about the city’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

The picture-perfect Étretat is the Normandy coast’s seaside resort that owes its popularity to the stunning sceneries and extraordinary landscapes. The resort is located 53 km/33 miles (a 55-minute drive) north of Le Havre cruise port and is famous for its dramatic white chalk cliffs that inspired the works of poets, writers and artists throughout centuries including Monet, Courbet, Leblanc and others.
Étretat has many scenic spots from where you can admire the spectacular rock formations (called “falaises” in French) as well as a pretty town where you browse shops or grab a bite at one of the charming eateries.

Wrapping Up
Normandy is one of the most beautiful French regions and there are so many places to see! If your cruise ship docks in Le Havre, I highly suggest you book one of the shore excursions to Paris, D-Day Beaches, Rouen, Honfleur, or Mont Saint-Michel, regardless of the driving time as these places deserve it!

Added to Favourites!
- 3 hrs Estimate Duration
Visit the magnificent first 20th-Century urban center in Europe to be added to the UNESCO world Heritage list, downtown Le Havre. The genius behind the design was architect Auguste Perret, a “poet in concrete” who was both traditional and innovative in his approach.
A short drive takes you to the city center, where your walking tour begins. Along the way, you’ll discover countless architectural gems such as the Town Hall, Saint Roch gardens, Avenue Foch, and Saint Joseph church,. At the end of your tour, you can stay in the city center to shop or explore further, and later return to the ship on your own.

Everything you need to know about the Le Havre Cruise Port in 2024!

Introduction to Le Havre, Normandy
History of le havre.
Le Havre, with its rich tapestry of history, isn't just any port city. During the turbulent times of World War II, much of its architectural charm was lost to the ravages of conflict. However, like a phoenix, the city rose from its ashes under the guidance of Auguste Perret, a visionary architect. His designs, marrying function with aesthetic appeal, breathed new life into Le Havre. This effort didn't go unnoticed; the city's exceptional post-war architecture was recognized and honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, marking its significance on the global stage.
Lights & Clouds in Le Havre
The allure of Le Havre isn't confined to its buildings alone. The skies above the city have been a canvas of nature, displaying a mesmerizing blend of lights and clouds. This ethereal atmosphere hasn't just been a treat for its residents but has also inspired a plethora of artists. Notably, the Impressionist maestros, Claude Monet and Eugene Boudin, found themselves enchanted by the city's skies, capturing its radiant hues and shifting patterns in their legendary paintings.
Normandy Region
While Le Havre itself offers much to behold, it's also the gateway to the broader treasures of Normandy. Those keen on exploring further can embark on shore excursions, journeying into the heart of Normandy. From its rolling countryside, and historic landmarks, to its vibrant culture, the region promises a rich tapestry of experiences waiting to be unwrapped by eager explorers.
Cruises Arriving in Le Havre port
If the seas are calling you, you'll be pleased to know that several renowned cruise lines anchor at Le Havre cruise port. Esteemed names like MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and Aida grace the port, offering travelers a memorable voyage. Upon arrival, passengers are greeted with well-equipped facilities, ensuring a seamless transition from sea to land.

Visit Le Havre
Delve into the heart of Le Havre, a city that wears its history and culture like a badge of honor. Wander through the streets, and you'll find remnants of its storied past juxtaposed with modernity.
Auguste Perret's architectural genius echoes in the city's layout, a testament to its rebirth after the war's devastation. And while you're there, don't forget to cast your eyes skyward; those clouds and lights that once inspired artists might stir something within you.
Visit the Normandy Beaches
The sands of Normandy aren't just grains and shores. They're pages from history, whispering tales of valor from D-Day, the fateful turn of World War II. Especially resonant for Americans, beaches like Omaha and Utah stand as silent witnesses to courage, loss, and triumph.
As you tread these sands, take a moment to remember and honor the brave souls who shaped history here. If you'd like to make the most of the Normandy Beaches, we cannot praise enough the Normandy D-Day Landing Beaches Shore Excursion from Le Havre led by our certified guides with over 15 years of experience.

Stepover at the Port of Le Havre - Suggestions & What to Do?
Arrival at the le havre cruise terminal.
There's something magical about that first step of the cruise ship, isn't there? The aroma of salty sea air mixed with the distant scents of fresh pastries. Le Havre is not just a stop - it’s a journey.
Le Havre Cruise Port
Overview : The Le Havre Cruise Port isn’t just a docking station for cruise ships; it’s a modern architectural marvel that stands ready to usher in the large and illustrious vessels from across the seven seas.
Distance from the City Center : Cruise Terminal is merely 2.2 kilometers from the vibrant pulse of Le Havre. Close enough to taste the excitement!
Travel Time : Depending on your chariot of choice, be it wheels or feet, you’re a breezy 12 to 30 minutes away from city splendors.
Taxi : Taxis are available in the ferry terminal and the ride to the city center shouldn’t cost you more than 10€ per vehicle one-way.
Shuttle Services : Regular shuttles, as dependable as the tides, shuttle to and fro between the Le Havre and the Le Havre cruise terminal. Remember to glance over the timetable! These shuttles usually drop you off at landmarks like the Le Volcan Arts Theater Complex and the Espace Coty shopping mall.
Railway Connectivity: the Le Havre train station, Gare Le Havre, stands roughly 2.2 km/1.4 miles (or a 30-minute walk) from the cruise terminal. If you start your walk from Le Volcan, you'll reach the train station in about 20 minutes. At this railway hub, you can hop on trains to various destinations like Paris, Rouen, and Honfleur. To plan your journey, refer to the official SNCF website , France's national railway operator.

Before you sail into the heart of the city, anchor your appetite. Right at the port’s doorstep, you'll find pockets of culinary wonder, from quick bites that tantalize to full-fledged French feasts.
Local Crafts & Souvenirs
Memories are intangible, but the right souvenir can serve as a perfect vessel. Just a stone's throw from the port, artisans weave magic into crafts, turning ordinary materials into tokens of remembrance.
Essential Tips for Your Le Havre Visit:
Currency : France uses the EURO (€). Both local currency and credit cards are readily accepted.
Tipping : While not obligatory, consider leaving a few euros at a restaurant if the service particularly impresses you.
Emergency Contact : Dial 112 if you find yourself in an emergency.
Sunday Norms : Sundays typically see a quieter France; many shops are closed. However, grocery stores remain open until noon. The MuMa Museum, a notable exception, welcomes visitors on Sundays.
Monday Closures : Mondays might be quieter still, with many stores and museums in Le Havre opting to close. A heads up, the MuMa Museum is one of them.
Shopping on Weekends : If you've got shopping on the mind, particularly for clothes, you'll find some stores open on Sundays and Mondays at the Docks. Note : This isn't in the same direction as the city center.
Language Barrier : As a bustling seaport, you'll find many locals conversant in English. However, in the city center, you might find some who only speak their native French.
What to do in Le Havre from the cruise port
Le Havre, a quaint city on France's northern coast, is an intriguing mix of history, architecture, art, and nature. As your cruise ship docks in the cruise port, prepare to be introduced to the many facets of this UNESCO-listed destination.
A Tale of Two Architectures:
Auguste perret's legacy:.
Le Havre's resilience shines through its post-WWII reconstruction. After its devastation, the visionary Auguste Perret spearheaded the city's transformation using innovative reinforced concrete techniques. Among the many modern landmarks, the town hall stands tall, complemented by the St. Joseph's Church's unique structure. Do take a moment to step inside the church between 10 am and 6 pm the sunlight filtering through its stained glass is a sight to behold.
Oscar Niemeyer's Modern Marvels:
Adjacent to the Le Havre's shuttle stop stands an architectural marvel that locals affectionately dub “The Volcano” or “The Yogurt Pot.” This iconic building, contrasting with Perret's designs, is the brainchild of Oscar Niemeyer, renowned for his groundbreaking work in Brasilia.
Nature & Art Merge:
Le Havre's ethereal light has mesmerized countless artists, especially the impressionists. As you stroll along the ponds and promenade, stop by the displays showcasing iconic paintings, offering glimpses of the very spots they were created. Extend your walk to Sainte Adresse, historically significant during WWI. The beach has its own allureᅳwith pebbles dominating during high tide and soft sand appearing during the low, accentuated in summer by vintage beach bungalows.
MuMa Museum - A Haven for Art Lovers:
Nestled near the harbor watchtower lies Le Havre's art gem: the André Malraux Museum or MuMa. Awash with natural light, its vast collection spans from the 15th to the 20th century, featuring masterpieces from stalwarts like Monet, Renoir, and Degas. Its impressive Impressionist trove is second only to Paris. Note: The museum remains closed on Mondays.
Contemporary Touches in an Ancient City Centre
As Le Havre celebrated its 500th anniversary in 2018, it welcomed modern art pieces that have since become permanent fixtures. Among them are the vibrant arches crafted by Vincent Ganivet, designed using colored containers. This blend of tradition and modernity stands tall at the end of rue de Paris, with the bustling former port of Le Havre as its backdrop.
Le Havre, Echoes of the Past:
While modern architecture dominates, Le Havre's past still whispers through the remnants of the old city. Wander down rue de Paris to find the cathedralᅳa modest structure with a history-rich bell tower dating back to the 16th century and Cardinal de Richelieu's organ gifts from the 17th century.
Panoramic Le Havre:
For a bird's-eye view of Le Havre, head to the cliffs at the end of the main beach walk. The panoramic vantage point unveils the vast expanse of the city, the beach, and the majestic bell tower of St. Joseph's Church. On clear days, the distant towns of Deauville and Trouville emerge from the horizon.
Local Pulse - Culture and Gastronomy:
Dive into Le Havre's heart by wandering its streets. Discover bakeries exuding the aroma of fresh pastries and explore the vibrant Les Halles market hub of activity especially in the mornings. Here, the rhythm of French life unfolds in the most authentic way. Just a tip: Many stores pause between 1 and 3 p.m., embracing the quintessential French mid-day break.

Is it possible to do some some Paris in this day?
Any suggestions for a reliable tour guide, trying to get a van together of 12 or so other pax. With a 5 hour drive back and fourth that will give us approx 5 hours plus to tour.

I love to rent cars in ports and have done so all over the world. In fact, we've got one reserved for next October in Le Havre. But, I'm not sure I would attempt Paris on this itinerary. First, to my knowledge, the earliest any of the rental car agencies open is 8:00, which would put you close to 8:30 getting on the road. That gets you into Paris around 11:00 AM, if it takes 2 1/2 hours as you say. The rental car agency closes at 6:30, which is also your "all aboard" time. I'd be heading back from Paris no later than 3:00 PM to give yourself some pad in case of traffic or a flat tire or some other problem. That leaves you with only 4 hours in Paris. So, no time to eat and very little time to even stop and tour a site. I did Paris once in 6 hours, which gave me enough time to walk through Notre Dame, walk by the Louvre, eat lunch, and climb the Eiffel Tower. You'll have to decide if 4 hours is worth the 5 hours of driving.
If Le Havre is the last port before the end of the cruise, it may be worth arranging to leave the ship there and fly home from Paris. Many people do this, but you need to check that the cruise line is okay with it.
Have you done the DDay beaches? That will be well worth the time if you have not...... If you air is not booked, you might take the chunnel from England to Paris before or after your trip and do Paris then......otherwise the train might be a quicker option for a few hours in Paris. ENJOY!

Two ports after Le havre, Belgium and Amsterdan.
I vote for making Tilbury an over night. West End shows, etc. It the port next to Le havre

Two cautions , t's a long way your 2 to 3 hours is if all goes well, very little time to see much .Traffic can be heavy on the routes into Paris, so to give yourself enough time to return to the ship, you will reduce sightseeing time. Secondly VE day in France is a holiday so many locations will not open as normal, routes could be much busier than usual and this could disrupt the day.
I did an NCL excursion last year to Paris from Le Havre. We had time for a tour around the city and an excellent lunch cruise on the Seine. It was a great day and we didn't have to worry about getting back in time at the end of the day.

Victory in Europe Day is celebrated all over Europe. In France, it is a day of celebration and remembrance with church services, ceremonies and parades. French flags fly from the tops of poles everywhere and the air force thunders overhead in dramatic flyovers. Wreaths are laid during the ceremonies at monument aux morts in each village, town and city.
Being a national holiday, schools, post offices, banks, businesses, shops and many restaurants are closed. The streets are full of people attending parades and the red, white and blue of the French flag is everywhere.

Thanks for posting this. I just realized the Getaway is docked in Le Havre that same day as the Pearl. Guess I'll have to rethink my shopping day. It will be fun to join the celebration though!
If the shops and restaurants etc closer to Le Havre may be closed, maybe the bus trip with lunch cruise on the Seine is not such a bad idea! Though it certainly would be a tease to see such a tiny glimpse of the city.
I personally would not take a chance of missing my ship's departure with such a long drive on my own, too many things could go wrong. I feel safer taking a ship tour when it's a location so far from the port. I've seen people left standing on the pier....

The seine cruise was a bit of a tease but we saw all the main sites around the city, then the River tour and an excellent lunch with multiple bottles of wine. It was a fun day.

I just booked my cruise on the new Mardi Gras and one of the ports will be Le Havre I looked at private tours from the port to Paris and one stood out since you will be leaving before I will you could tell me about your experience. The name of the Co.
DRIVER GUIDE FRANCE PRIVATE TOURS

When we were in Le Havre in 2017, we were there on Bastille Day, so another holiday for the country. We talked with some people at dinner who went to Paris for the day and they were disappointed. It was a lot to tackle in the one day. A lot of time spent traveling for sure.
We did the Overlord tours to Omaha Beach and Bayeux ourselves, as that was a bucket list trip for me! It was an amazing day, great tour, great guide, etc... Just loved the whole day. And it was relaxing, not rushed. We could have stayed out just a little longer, but our guide was concerned about traffic because of the holiday. He told us a lot of people head towards the coast area for the holiday too. But it was a great tour!
When we rented a car in Le Havre we ran into an unexpected farmers’s protest shortly after leaving the city. Several dozen tractors and farms vehicles had arranged themselves bumper to bumper in all the freeway lanes, making a blockade. They were travelling at tractor speed.
We exited at the next opportunity and fell back on Plan B, lunch in Caen and a drive back along the coast on secondary roads - one gorgeous old village after another all the way to le Havre ( pronounced Le Av).
Have a Plan B if you try your excursion.

We will be in Le Havre for the day (as so many other posts have mentioned) - last time there we decided to NOT take the LONG trek into Paris - this time we have decided that is what we really want to do - to at least see Paris.
YES - we know that most of the day will be spent traveling to and from (so we DON"T want to take a bus - but want to hire our own guide)
Yes We know that will cost $$
All of the posts that I have been able to find on this subject either recommend ToursbyLocals (which we have used before - they don't have anyone listed to take us from Le Havre to and from Paris) or other posts recommend taking the cruise-line bus (NCL - don't see one offered when we are there (April 2020) - Or most posts recommend that we spend more than just one day there.... We are two "senior citizens" can't do all that much walking anyway - so don't really need to see ALL THAT much of Paris
Has anyone used Private Tours-Paris ? - Or can ANYONE recommend a Private Tour guide for this ?
THANK YOU 😀

We are on the NCL Star next May (2020) as of now - they aren't offering any kind of a shore excursion to Paris. Was you experience that they posted availability of that excursion closer to sail date ?
How much time did you get to actually spend in Paris -
This sounds like what we REALLY want to do !
Some of our excursions weren’t posted until a month or so before we cruised. This one did sell out so watch for it. We had about an hour or so tour on the bus, then the cruise on the Seine with a wonderful lunch, the about a half hour to walk around the area near the boats. No real free time to explore the city or shop, but a great intro to Paris and all of the highlights. I would do it again!
- 3 weeks later...
Which of the NCL excursions to Paris did you take ? - It looks there is one that is called "Paris on your Own" - and then another one the includes a 2-hour bus trip around the town - a recent review of that last one (which includes the bus trip around town)
indicated she was VERY disappointed about the location that the bus "dropped them off" for passengers to begin their tour "on their own" - I guess it was out in the middle of no-where
Did you have such an experience ?
We hope to be able to walk from where the bus trip drops us off - and visit the Eiffel Tower

Mine included lunch on a river boat on the Seine. We had about an hour bus tour when we first arrived in Paris, then boarded the boats. The lunch was multi-course and included unlimited red and white wine. We went up to Notre Dame and down to the model for the statue of liberty. It was a good 2 1/2 - 3 hours. We then had about 20 minutes to walk around the bus parking area along the river. There were vendors set up there with the usual souvenir stuff. There was really no time to explore on your own. It was a great day though.
We think Bob's post offers very sound advice. Paris is DW's favorite city (world wide) and we have spent more then our share of time in that city. We also have taken many cruises that had port days in Le Havre. Going to Paris (from Le Havre) for a port day tour is not a great way to see Paris although it is better then nothing if it is your only option. Paris is best enjoyed by spending several days (or even weeks) in the city! We have previously done just what Bob suggests and its a great option. You arrange with your cruise line to disembark (at Le Havre) a day early. You can then take the train (or arrange other transportation) to Paris and spend some real time (perhaps a few days) in the city. You then fly home from CDG. Another alternative (if you have the time and money) is to spend a few days in Paris, then take the Eurostar train to London and spend some time in London before flying home. Or course there is also the option of just spending more time in France (or Europe) before returning home.
We have decided to fly into Paris 3 days pre cruise to enjoy the city and then fly SAS 3 days to Copenhagen before our cruise. When we get to Le Havre we will have other places to visit.
Although I am not a big fan of cruise line excursions (we find them overpriced and overcrowded) your post makes me think this might be your best option. NCL will certainly offer excursions to Paris which will use bus transportation. Hiring a guide/car/driver in Le Havre will be very expensive unless you can join with a few others (try using the CC Roll Call for your cruise and see if anyone is interested) to hire a tour. There is also frequent (usually hourly) train service between Le Havre and Paris but this does not sound like a good option for you given your posted limitations. Otherwise a possibility would be to take the train to Paris and arrange with Tours by Locals to have a guide meet you in Paris.
You are probably aware that Paris is a huge city and most meaningful tours do involve a lot of walking. It is possible that NCL will offer some kind of bus tour with minimal walking but we have no clue. Another possibility is to get yourself to Paris and do some sightseeing on a hop-on-hop-off bus.
I guess as folks who really do love Paris we join with the others who have told you that this city is best visited on a multi-day visit (we think a week is too short). One can certainly minimize walking by using public transit or the HoHo buses. But the limitations of a short port day visit are difficult to overcome.
Hank offers excellent advice. On our recent Viking tour, the participants on the Le Havre - Paris - Le Havre day trip returned exhausted, but happy to have seen Paris. Several said that might be the only opportunity in their lives to see the City of Light. They seemed delighted to have seen such world famous sights as the Etoile, Louvre, Eiffel Tower, etc.
I made a similar, difficult choice. My wife and I have been to France several times, but never to Normandy or Brittany. For close to 50 years, I've wanted to see the mountain church of St Michel. But, I didn't want to rush it by spending eight hours on the bus, for just three hours seeing the building. So, I hope to spend two or three days of a future trip to France focused only on that building and mount.

D-Day Landing Beaches Discovery from Le Havre
- Explore the pivotal D-Day landing beaches with a journey from Le Havre to iconic WWII sites, including Arromanches-les-Bains and the American Cemetery.
- Pay your respects at the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, where 9,000 white grave markers poignantly memorialize the sacrifices for freedom.
- Experience the bravery of the American Rangers at Pointe du Hoc, standing atop the cliffs with a view that stretches over the English Channel.
- Walk the hallowed shores of Omaha, Juno, and Utah Beaches, delving into the strategic significance and the immense coordination of the D-Day invasion.
- To enhance your journey, we include a complimentary cold packed lunch including a baguette, water and small dessert.
Join us on a remarkable journey through the historical significance of the D-Day as you immerse yourself in the heroic stories, pivotal moments, and iconic landmarks that shaped one of the most monumental events in history.
Your expedition begins in Le Havre, a strategic city and vital logistical hub for the Allied forces that played a crucial role during World War II. From there, you'll set off to the German Cemetery, a poignant site, where each meticulously placed gravestone bears witness to the sacrifices made on both sides of the conflict. This initial stop sets the tone, inviting you to connect with history and grasp the complexities of the past before venturing further into the key events of the D-Day landings at Pointe du Hoc.
Next up is the legendary Pointe du Hoc. Situated on a rugged cliff-top overlooking the English Channel, Pointe du Hoc stands as a testament to the remarkable courage and determination of the American Rangers during the D-Day invasion. It was also home to formidable German artillery positions that threatened the invasion's success. Standing at the dramatic landscape and the sheer cliffs, and imagining the Rangers scaling them amidst a hail of enemy fire, evokes amazement and even a tear or two.
Continue on to Omaha Beach, a sweeping arc of golden sand stretching along Normandy's coast, that evokes profound emotion as the site of one of the most intense battles during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. Here, American forces faced formidable German defenses, challenging terrains, and fierce resistance, earning the beach its haunting nickname, "Bloody Omaha." Today's serene landscape contrasts sharply with the vivid historical accounts of that fateful day. Visitors are invited to walk along the very shores where thousands of soldiers fought and sacrificed.
In addition to the historical highlights, you will have ample opportunities to indulge in the local culture and cuisine. Take a break for a delicious lunch at Omaha Beach, allowing you to savor the flavors of the region while soaking in the scenic views. Our last stop is the iconic American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. Stand in awe as you gaze upon row after row of 9,000 meticulously maintained white grave markers. Each one represents a life cut short, a poignant reminder of the profound impact of war and the sacrifices made for freedom. While here, take a moment of reflection at the Memorial Chapel, a solemn tribute to the fallen. Whether you're a history enthusiast or a veteran paying homage, this tour is the perfect choice for an unforgettable experience that combines education, inspiration, and admiration for the resilience of the human spirit.
Please Note: Please indicate any special dietary restrictions (72 hours prior to tour) including a request for the vegetarian option (48 hours prior to tour) in advance so that the proper accommodations can be made. Being punctual is key, especially with large cruise ships and potential delays in disembarkation. We ask that you arrange to meet us as quickly as possible. We will make reasonable efforts to wait for passengers, please understand that we cannot delay indefinitely. If your ship docks late, the new starting time will be within 30 minutes of the new docking time.
If you are late and don't call, unfortunately, the bus cannot wait, and refunds will not be provided.
