Thomas Rhett Announces 4-Night 'Mini-Residency' in Las Vegas: 'It's Going to Be a Blast'

"I'm already looking forward to making these shows unlike any we've ever done before," the country singer teased of his upcoming Vegas run

thomas sanders tour

Thomas Rhett plans to give fans the full live experience for his upcoming Las Vegas run.

On Tuesday, June 25, the country star, 34, announced an “intimate” four-night “mini-residency” taking place at the BleauLive Theater inside Fontainebleau Las Vegas on Dec. 6, 7, 13 and 14.

According to the musician, the special set of shows, officially billed as Thomas Rhett: Live in Las Vegas, promises a one-of-a-kind experience for attendees, unlike anything he’s ever done.

“For me, having the chance to set up in Vegas for a string of shows is something I've been trying to find the right time to do for a while now,” the “ Beautiful as You ” performer said in a statement. “It gives us the chance to be back in smaller rooms — for almost a mini-residency — and really be right there to play off the fans and be sure every single one of them is on their feet each night.”

He added, “I’m already looking forward to making these shows unlike any we’ve ever done before. It’s going to be a blast."

Thomas Rhett’s residency news arrives a couple of weeks before his forthcoming album, About a Woman , out Aug. 23. Earlier this month, the dad of four girls — Willa Gray, 8, Ada James, 6, Lennon Love, 4 and Lillie Carolina, 2 — whom he shares with wife Lauren Akins , told Entertainment Tonight that his oldest daughter already heard the new upbeat LP and had a hilarious reaction to it.

"She said it slaps," the singer recalled. "I was like, 'Where did you hear that?' ... I guess slaps mean that it just has a good beat. I really don't know, but I received it."

The proud dad boasted that his upcoming project — his seventh studio album — has "slappers, bangers only,” adding that it was partially inspired by his kids.

"I started this record last April with the mission of making my kids want to be able to dance -- not that they haven't on my last records, but they like to skip the ballads," he continued jokingly. "We put one ballad on this project, which is like five less than I normally have ever done."

Thomas Rhett last performed at CMA Fest 2024 in Nashville on June 6 and is set to perform at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Festival in September, along with Doja Cat , Big Sean , Camila Cabello , Gwen Stefani , Keith Urban , New Kids on the Block , Paramore and many more.

Panthers' Ian Thomas: Surprisingly busy during OTAs

Share video.

Thomas caught a surprising number of passes during Carolina's offseason program, ESPN's David Newton reports.

The 2018 fourth-round pick got a lot of snaps and routes early in his career but never improved on a rookie season with 36 catches for 333 yards and two touchdowns. He then had four straight years between 136 and 197 yards, before sinking to five catches for 56 yards last season while playing a career-low 206 snaps. It sounds like Thomas may be a better fit in new coach Dave Canales' scheme, but fantasy value still seems a bit far-fetched for a player with 1,055 yards and four TDs on 2,975 career snaps. The Panthers also have Tommy Tremble and 2024 fourth-round pick Ja'Tavion Sanders competing for playing time at tight end, with the former better suited to blocking and the latter more of a receiving threat. Sanders is the only one of the bunch that seems to offer any real upside to become a fantasy-worthy pass catcher.

Panthers' Ian Thomas: Career-worst campaign

Panthers' ian thomas: suiting up for week 16, panthers' ian thomas: questionable after full practice, panthers' ian thomas: logs another limited session, panthers' ian thomas: gets in limited practice wednesday, panthers' ian thomas: won't play vs. falcons, our latest fantasy football stories.

Vine Star Thomas Sanders Opens Up About Coping With Trolls

thomas sanders tour

By Brianna Wiest

Image may contain Tie Accessories Accessory Thomas Sanders Human Person Clothing Apparel and Shirt

If you've been on Vine , you've undoubtedly seen Thomas Sanders . With 6 billion loops and counting, he's amassed a following of 13 million across his social platforms, and for good reason. Thomas is one of those performers who seems to effortlessly combine his talent with humor and relatability, and he's starting to receive some major recognition for that fact (he just snagged a nom for a Teen Choice Award!)

Now, Thomas is stepping out from behind the screen and onto the stage with his upcoming tour, Ultimate Storytime , presented by Playlist Live. He'll be hitting the road for 17 cities alongside some of his most famous characters, and a few real friends of his own.

But it's not all just for laughs. There's more to Thomas than meets the eye — or should we say, screen. He wants fans to leave the tour reminded that while they can be anything they want in life, they should also feel free to be themselves. Teen Vogue caught up with him before he hits the road, and talked creativity, self-esteem, and what he'd tell his younger self.

Teen Vogue : Tell us about the Ultimate Storytime tour. Why do you think fans should check it out?

Thomas Sanders: We’ve had the idea to do a tour for the longest time, I’ve always had a huge passion for theater. I wanted to share that with the fans in some way, and what better way than to bring Storytime to the stage? To combine music, comedy, and a good message to all of these kids, it’s just a great way to travel to different cities and meet people that I otherwise wouldn't. It’s just a perfect combination.

TV : What's that message? What do you want fans to leave knowing?

TS: I want kids to understand that they have the power to conduct their own story, that they are the protagonists of their own narratives. I think that people try to tell others how they should be and how they should live and what their lives should be like. They need to remember that they have the power to write their own stories, and to be who they are.

TV : Talk to us about your creative process. How do you come up with all of those video and Vine ideas?

TS: I’m a pretty random person, that’s for sure. A lot of these ideas just come when you need them to, when you’re not even thinking — when you're taking a shower or running, doing monotonous things. And then sometimes I do things and think, "is this relatable?" If so, I think of how I can package it in a unique way that people haven’t seen before. I bounce it around, get feedback from my friends, and then we work together to make that happen. Some days are easier than others. But when you get a good idea, it just kind of flows out of you.

TV : Being in the public eye is hard, especially on the Internet. How do you cope with critics and trolls?

TS: Thats a really good question. Honestly, I’ve learned pretty fast that a lot of comments you kind of just have to tune out. The important thing that I try to do is give an ear to those who send me positive feedback. I don’t give my attention to the people who have something negative to say. I think I’m lucky I’m coming from a point where I’m a little bit older and I’m able to put myself in that position. They might be coming from a place of jealousy, they’re not in a good place in their own heart, and you can’t give into that negativity.

_ TV : What’s your biggest struggle right now, and how do you cope with it?

TS: I would say retaining that creative energy, making sure you’re staying stretched. Constantly challenging yourself. Comedy is supposed to be an ever-evolving thing, it's always changing. You can see how things change in memes —common taste changes. You have to constantly be on top of that, and understand that your comedy. You have to stay true to what your supporters expect of you, but it’s okay to allow your comedy to change.

TV : What were you like as a kid? Did your life turn out the way you thought?

TS: As a kid, I was very adventurous. I was always a ham. I would use my dad’s camcorder, and we’d be making skits in my room. Skits that we thought were funny, before we even knew SNL was a thing. I would always try so hard to be funny in class, but it did socially ostracize me. I wasn’t afraid to be who I was, and that was a little bit weird. So, now, with that same humor that I put on Vine, for it to be as well-received as it has been, it's mind-blowing. It speaks volumes that you shouldn’t let other people dictate who you should be.

TV : What's something fans don’t know about you?

TS: I am remarkably an introvert. I really do like my alone time, I think a lot of people online like their alone time, whether they like to admit it or not. Being in the public for too long, it’s draining. It’s also nice to have your alone time to refresh and recharge.

TV: What did it feel like when you were told you were nominated for a Teen Choice Award?

TS: I was traveling, and somebody tagged me in a screenshot and I thought that the image had been doctored, because surely I wouldn’t have been nominated. And so I went onto the site, and there it was… it was amazing. I was just kind of walking on cloud 9 for a little while.

TV: What advice do you have for people who look up to you?

TS: We don’t give young people enough credit, for how smart they are, and how [worldly] they are. And also how much stress they have, how much they have to live with. Now with the internet, there’s an added pressure of identity and criticism, and they really need to take that into consideration. For them, I want to say: Don't let other people tell you how you should be. Or who to be. Don’t let people make you feel lesser than the amazing person that you are, because it’s just such a shame. There are so many sweethearts out there and they should never be made to feel as sad as they are being made to feel. It’s a shame. I just want to be there to offer their support.

TV : What would you tell your younger self if you could speak to him now?

TS: Hang in there. Don’t stop what you’re doing. Don’t doubt yourself as much.

Thomas Sanders

Thomas Sanders

  • Born April 24 , 1989 ¡ Gainesville, Florida, USA
  • Birth name Thomas Foley Sanders
  • Height 5′ 10″ (1.78 m)
  • Thomas Sanders was born in Gainesville, Florida, USA as Thomas Foley Sanders. He is an actor, singer and writer and is better known for his Vine series "Narrating People's Lives", also known as "Storytime", and his YouTube series "Sanders Sides" among other works. Sanders' parents are both school teachers and he has three brothers, Patrick, Christian and Shae. Thomas is two years older than Shae and eight years younger than Patrick and Christian. Sanders is descendant of Irish immigrants on his mother's side and is proud of his Irish Catholic heritage, having the chance to travel to Ireland where his ancestors used to live a few times. Even though he travels with some frequency to New York City and L.A., Sanders has lived all his life in Gainesville and still lives there. Sanders' interest in theater and singing began when he was in middle school. His debut was when he was in seventh grade, in a middle school production of "Macbeth", where he played Macduff. In middle school, he also started singing in choruses. He did his first musical in high school, when he played the evil scientist Prospero in an adaptation of "Return to the Forbidden Planet", based on Forbidden Planet (1956) . He was chosen because he was a bass singer and was the only one among the students who could reach the ultra-bass notes the character required. Later he became part of the Gainesville Community Playhouse, one of the most important community theater companies in his native Gainesville, and, founded in 1927, one of the oldest active community theater companies in all Florida. He debuted in the GCP in 2006, in a production of "Beauty and the Beast", the same year he started college in the University of Florida, which is located in Gainesville, combining his studies of science in chemical engineering with theater. He won three Golden Apples, an award honoring excellence in GCP productions each season, as the best actor in a musical in 2007 for his portrayal of Ko-Ko in "Hot Mikado", in 2010 for his portrayal of Leo Bloom in "The Producers", and in 2011 for his portrayal of Billy Crocker in "Anything Goes". He also starred in shows like "Into the Woods", "Singing in the Rain" and "Les Miserables" among others. In April 2013, a friend of Sanders, Antonio Romero , showed him a new smartphone app, named Vine. It allowed recording of videos of six seconds of length and its upload on a new social media network. Together, Sanders and Antonio recorded Dinner After SHR (2013) which became the first in a long list of Vines, later known as the Sanders Shorts (2013) . At first, Sanders only experimented with the app, uploading Vines just for fun or recording real life events like parties or moments before or after stage performances. It wouldn't be long until he started doing proper scripted Vines, singing snippets of songs, showing his comedy and doing impressions of characters like Stewie Griffin from Family Guy (1999) , Stitch from Lilo & Stitch (2002) or Kermit the Frog from The Muppet Show (1976) and Sesame Street (1969) among others. On the first months he was still doing Vines just for fun, until he started getting popular with series like "Narrating People's Lives" (also known as "Storytime", which earned him the nickname "Storytime Guy"), "Disney Pranks with Friends", "Pokemon Pranks" and "Stewie vs. Herbert" (co-starring Taylor Shrum as Herbert) among others, and his subscriber count grew amazingly fast, reaching 1 million followers in October 2013, only six months after his debut on Vine. It was then when he was approached by Matt Hogan , who became his manager and producer. Sanders then left his daytime job on an engineering firm and focused on Vines on the daytime and theater at night. Sanders also released his first musical EP, containing Christmas songs, in December 2013. Vine popularity allowed Sanders to go to conventions around America and abroad, even reaching Tel-Aviv, Israel, and Melbourne, Australia. He still kept working on the GCP for some more years until he did his first professional theater musical in 2015, portraying J.D. in an Orlando production of "Heathers: The Musical". He used his Vine series to help drama teachers in Gainesville high schools give their students an acting exercise, and his high school Vines alongside real life students became some of his most popular, first playing one of the students, and later introducing the Teacher character that, along with the Dad character and the Prince character, became essential characters in his career. Meanwhile, he also started a YouTube channel where he did longer productions and collabs with other famous Viners and YouTubers like Anna Brisbin (Brizzy Voices), Hannah Hart , Miss Benny and Gabe Erwin among others. He also started publishing monthly compilations of his Vines from September 2014 onward. Sanders won a Shorty Award in 2015 and a Streamy Award in 2016 to the best Viner. By January 2017, Sanders had reached 8.3 million subscribers and over 7.4 billion reproductions of his Vines, which made Thomas Sanders one of the most successful Viners in the history of the Vine platform. His popularity as a Viner allowed him to appear on The View (1997) as an interviewee and one of his Vines was featured on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2003) . He also appeared as a guest actor in an episode of the Disney Channel show Bizaardvark (2016) and co-hosted on Disney XD a special edition of Walk the Prank (2016) , Talk the Prank with Thomas Sanders and David Lopez (2017) . In the middle of 2016, Twitter announced that they would shut down Vine. Sanders announced that he would keep doing Vines until the app's last day, and then he would focus on his YouTube career. On August and September 2016, Sanders went on a tour with his own stage musical, "Ultimate Storytime", based on his Vine series "Narrating People's Lives", with which he toured through 17 cities in the U.S.A. and Canada, including Toronto and New York City. He also released an album on iTunes and Spotify with the soundtrack of this musical. After the tour ended, he started thinking on how to make the transition from Vine to YouTube, and he had the idea of using three characters from his Vine series, the Teacher character, the Dad character and the Prince character, which had became some of the most important and renowned characters by his viewers and which he had also used in his tour, to represent the different aspects of his personality. Initially it was going to be a one-off vlog, but it was so well received that he did a second and a third installment, where he had Lilly Singh as a guest star and introduced the character of Anxiety/Virgil, which became by far one of the most iconic characters in his career. That's how the Sanders Sides (2016) was born, a series that became "the staple of (his YouTube) channel", as it was demonstrated on Halloween 2017 when hundreds and hundreds of people cosplayed as the Sanders Sides characters, as well as the thousands of drawings and cosplay pics Sanders has kept on receiving and publishing since the beginning of the series. Joan S. , one of Sanders' best friends and a long-term collaborator since the beginning on Vine, joined "Sanders Sides" from the 8th episode as a co-writer, and together they expanded the series and developed characters to a new level, incorporating dramatic and thrilling moments as well as further improving the comedic moments that were the root of the series. "Sanders Sides" would also see special collaborations, like the one from Butch Hartman , who not only appeared as himself but also did a special animated sequence exclusively for "Sanders Sides" where Thomas and the "Sanders Sides" became cartoon characters, and also a cameo by Leslie Odom Jr. . Vine was finally shut down in January 2017, and from that moment Sanders kept on releasing the now renamed as "Sanders Shorts" episodes on Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat, while maintaining the monthly compilations on YouTube which were combined with "Sanders Sides" and many more YouTube shows in the Thomas Sanders (2013) series like "Real or Fake Anime", "I Can't Believe I Never Knew", "Storytime Madlibs" and "Voices of Unreason" among many others. It was in one of these episodes where Sanders officially came out as gay, becoming LGBTQ+ normalization one of the main themes in his career from this point on. He also did some musical collaborations with people like Adam Pascal , Deedee Magno , Dodie Clark and Jon Cozart among others, and kept on releasing music, being "The Things We Used to Share", released in July 2017, his first original single, composed and written by Joan Stokes, based on real events in Sanders' life. He also released a new YouTube series, "Cartoon Therapy", that was also highly praised. Sanders won his second Shorty Award, to the best YouTube comedian in 2017 and was nominated with Jon Cozart to another Streamy Award to the best YouTube collaboration. These were his first YouTube related award and nomination, which gave him high hopes for the future. Although, due to his busy schedule, Sanders had been unable to work as much as he used to in community theater, or theater in general, he's still open to collaborate with the Gainesville Community Playhouse, and he has done it from time to time, the most recent time in December 2019, when he portrayed the Beast in a GCP production of Beauty and the Beast. It was his return to stage after three years, even when his busy schedule only allowed him to participate as an understudy for three shows only. Sanders had owned an account in what was then known as Musica.ly for many years, but he hadn't given much use to it. When Musica.ly was renamed as TikTok and started gaining popularity as the spiritual successor of Vine, Thomas' account started gaining subscribers at a great speed, and Thomas started, first reposting his "Sanders Shorts" on TikTok, then turning Tiktok into his main social media account to post his shorts, many times in unique montages or in aspect ratio formats not seen in his other traditional platforms like Instagram and others. He had 4 million subscribers by mid 2019, and by July 2020, he already had more than 6.4 million, doubling his YouTube subscriber count. At this rate, by mid 2021 he will have recovered all the 8.3 million subscribers he had at the end of Vine and possibly even surpass it. - IMDb Mini Biography By: manbemel
  • Positive treatment of LGBTQIA+ issues.

  • Tendence to sing a lot.
  • Avoidance of any kind of cursing or bad language. This trait is frequently used as a gag teasing that he might curse but never actually doing it.
  • Uses to play two or more characters at the same time, many times personifications of his thoughts or feelings.
  • By the time Vine was shut down in January 2017, his Vines had been seen a total of 7.4 billion times, and Sanders' account on Vine had 8.3 million subscribers, which made Thomas Sanders one of the most successful viners in the history of the Vine platform.

  • [Speaking about how Vine has affected his career in show business] Having Vine take me places - I went to Los Angeles, I went to Canada, I was on The View - and all because I'm on my phone too much.
  • [about how being a stage actor helped him build his comedy on Vine] I was into theater way before Vine. Theater has always been my passion and my dream, so I had done a lot of theater before - I think nearly 20 shows - before I got into making Vines. I borrowed a lot of my own theatricalities for the Vines. In fact, I think I was the only one chalking up character acting and singing and nerdy humor, and that was my niche and that's how I took off. So I owe a lot of my success on Vine to theater, to stage performance, and now I am able to borrow back and forth.
  • [speaking about real life encouraging words he has received from his followers] It always takes me aback that the videos I make can positively affect someone somewhere in the world, and then to see them face-to-face thanking me just makes it all the more corporeal. I've been to a few State Thespian competitions where individuals have come up thanking me for bringing some representation to the LGBTQIA community in comedy without making their identity the butt of the joke, which unfortunately happens so much in social media. I have been messaged by some students that their sign language teachers really appreciated my use of sign language in some vines to represent the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community. And I've also had a student write to me that their teacher used my Vine about mental health to start a conversation in their classroom, which absolutely amazes me.
  • [when asked what was something fans did not know about him] I am remarkably an introvert. I really do like my alone time, I think a lot of people online like their alone time, whether they like to admit it or not. Being in the public for too long, it's draining. It's also nice to have your alone time to refresh and recharge.
  • [about how he does cope with critics and internet trolls] Thats a really good question. Honestly, I've learned pretty fast that a lot of comments you kind of just have to tune out. The important thing that I try to do is give an ear to those who send me positive feedback. I don't give my attention to the people who have something negative to say. I think I'm lucky I'm coming from a point where I'm a little bit older and I'm able to put myself in that position. They might be coming from a place of jealousy, they're not in a good place in their own heart, and you can't give into that negativity.

Sunday Story-Lines: Travelers Championship set to culminate in big name shootout

Draws and Fades

Change Text Size

Cream has risen to the top at TPC River Highlands as a host of big names are set for a Sunday showdown for the final Signature Event of the season at the Travelers Championship.

Early pace-setter Tom Kim continued to play great golf and adds the 54-hole lead to his 18 and 36-hole leads this week. It was +900 for a wire-to-wire winner this week via DraftKings at the start of the tournament and Kim might have a few bettors hoping he keeps the pedal down one more day.

Kim fired a 5-under 65 to move to 18-under for the week, alone at the top of the leaderboard and one ahead of Scottie Scheffler and Akshay Bhatia.

A late blitz from World No. 1 Scheffler, which saw four consecutive birdies to finish his round of 64, has the Texan eyeing off a sixth win of the season as the betting favorite with a round to go.

Scheffler is now +150 to be the first player since Tiger Woods in 2009 to notch up six wins in a PGA TOUR season.

Bhatia birdied the final two holes to also post a 64 on Saturday, giving the pre-tournament longshot a real chance at a third TOUR win.

PGA Champion Xander Schauffele surged into the lead with three birdies in a row in the middle of the back nine before cooling off. A last-hole bogey could prove pivotal as it dropped him to 16-under and two back.

He’s joined at 16-under by Sungjae Im while Collin Morikawa is sixth at 15-under.

Here is a quick look at the latest odds and storylines heading to Sunday with my draws and fades below.

  • +150: Scottie Scheffler (-17, T2) – With a win the World No. 1 would make it six on the season and 12 in his career. Last player to have six or more wins in a TOUR season was Tiger Woods (6) in 2009.
  • +333: Tom Kim (-18, 1st) – Led after 18, 36 and now 54 holes. Three-time TOUR winner turned 22 this week and looking to be the first South Korean to win the Travelers Championship. Sits 61st in FedExCup looking to secure Playoffs this week.
  • +550: Xander Schauffele (-16, T4) – Chasing ninth PGA TOUR win, and second this season after his PGA Championship victory. Was Travelers champion in 2022 and leads the field in SG: Putting.
  • +700: Akshay Bhatia (-17, T2) – An 80/1 longshot pre-tournament showing he belongs. Seeking a third TOUR win, a second this season after winning the Valero Texas Open.
  • +1200: Sungjae Im (-16, T4) – Like Tom Kim, looking to be the first Korean to win the Travelers. Two-time TOUR winner but not since the 2021 Shriners Children’s Open. Second this week in Par 4 Scoring.
  • +1400: Collin Morikawa (-15, 6th) – Hunting TOUR win No. 7, a first since the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP last October. His last eight starts all top-25s including four top-4s.
  • +4000: Tony Finau (-14, T7) – Hoping for lucky TOUR win no. 7 on Sunday, Finau leads the field in Par 5 Scoring and Sand Saves.
  • +5000: Justin Thomas (-14, T7) – Last of his 15 TOUR wins came at the 2022 PGA Championship, over two years ago. Tied the hottest player on the Back 9 this week and leads Driving Distance.
  • +6600: Shane Lowry (-14, T7) – Former Open Champion won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Rory McIlroy but now chases a solo win. Third in SG: Tee-to-Green, fourth SG: Approach and fourth SG: Around the Green this week
  • +8000: Patrick Cantlay (-13, T10) – Shot 60 as an amateur at TPC River Highlands and might need to do so again to get ninth TOUR win and first since 2022 BMW Championship.
  • +10000: Cameron Young (-13, T10) – Rocketed into contention after an 11-under 59 in the third round. Just the 12th golfer to shoot sub-60 on the PGA TOUR. Still pining for a maiden TOUR win.

Xander Schauffele +550

Call me crazy but I am going back to the well on the man I picked pre-tournament and again after the second round. While his final hole bogey was far from a huge confidence booster and puts him behind Scheffler instead of on level pegging with him, it might be just the kick in the backside Schauffele needs. He thrives on people discounting him and his recent PGA Championship victory expelled any personal doubts. Schauffele is the value on the board as a former champion at TPC River Highlands AND as the leader in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting.

Akshay Bhatia, Sungjae Im, Collin Morikawa are all value bets in this situation also if you don’t love Schauffele. The fact Scheffler is in the final group has inflated the odds of others and given you a chance to take a calculated risk in a birdie fest. I’ve liked Bhatia all week and expect he can hold a place in the top five, Im has come from the clouds with an all-around game this week and Morikawa has been in exceptional form of late without winning. My lone concern with Morikawa is he will need to make all his putts on Sunday to make up his deficit. Remember also, six of the last eight champions here have come from the final group on Sunday. That puts another check in the Bhatia column.

Scottie Scheffler +150

Do I think Scheffler can’t win the Travelers Championship… of course not. He is the favorite for a reason and his finish of four straight birdies after a bogey was befitting of the best player in the world on Saturday. But I don’t like +150 in a shootout where putting will be the key down the stretch. If Schauffele, or someone else, can set a pace early and place the pressure on the greens for the final group then the odds become dangerous around Scheffler. Yes, you’re getting plus money when you might normally get negative odds, but it just feels like a trap play. I’ll eat my words, like I have many times with Scheffler before, if he pulls ahead and wins easily, but at the end of the day I’m trying to protect the bettors out there!

Scottie Scheffler wins sixth Tour event of season after disruptive finish at Travelers Championship

CROMWELL, Conn. — Scottie Scheffler had to wait out a climate protest on the 18th green and Tom Kim’s tying birdie on the last hole of regulation.

Those events only delayed what seems to be inevitable on the PGA Tour this season: the best golfer in the world walking off with the trophy.

Shrugging off a protest that interrupted the tournament on the 72nd hole while the leaders were lining up their putts, Scheffler won the Travelers Championship on the first hole of sudden death on Sunday for his sixth win of the year, the most in one season on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods had six in 2009.

“When something like that happens, you don’t really know what’s happening, So it can kind of rattle you a little bit,” Scheffler said.

“That can be a stressful situation, and you would hate for the tournament to end on something weird happening because of a situation like that,” he said. “Tom and I both tried to calm each other down so we could give it our best shot there on 18.”

Scheffler closed with a 5-under 65 and a 22-under 258 total at the TPC River Highlands, and Kim matched him with a final-round 66.

Tom Hoge and Sungjae Im tied for third, two shots back, with Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau, Justin Thomas and Akshay Bhatia tied for fifth at 18 under. Bhatia was also in the final group that was disrupted by the protest.

“I was scared for my life,” he said. “I didn’t even really know what was happening. ... But thankfully the cops were there and kept us safe, because that’s, you know, that’s just weird stuff.”

It was Scheffler’s fourth victory of the year in the tour’s $20 million, limited-field signature events , earning him a payday of $3.6 million. He also won the Masters and The Players Championship.

And Scheffler still has two months to go.

“As much as I love him, I would have loved to take that away from him,” said Kim, who shares a birthday and a friendship with Scheffler. “But I’m happy for him, and after I tapped out, after he tapped out, he said some really nice words and it meant a lot to me.”

Scheffler had a one-stroke lead heading to the 18th green on Sunday when six people stormed the course, waving smoke bombs that left a red and white powdery residue on the putting surface. Some wore white T-shirts with the words “NO GOLF ON A DEAD PLANET” in black lettering.

They were tackled by police and taken off.

After a delay of about five minutes, when tournament officials used towels and blowers to remove the powder and any other marks that might affect play, Scheffler left a 26-foot putt from the fringe on the edge of the cup and tapped in for par.

Kim then made a 10-foot birdie putt for a 66 to match Scheffler.

“Obviously it is a disruption and you don’t want it to happen, but for me it just kind of slowed things down,” Kim said. “It took the meaning of the putt away for a second. Because for the past 17 and a half holes all you’re thinking about is golf, and suddenly when that happens your mind goes into a complete — like, you’re almost not even playing golf anymore. I thought it was a dream for a second.”

The hole location on the 18th was moved for the playoff to avoid the parts of the green affected by the protesters.

Scheffler hit his approach in the playoff to 11 feet while Kim found a greenside bunker. Kim’s blast from a plugged lie ran 36 feet past the hole, leaving Scheffler with an easy two-putt par for the victory. Afterward, his wife, Meredith, met him on the green, carrying their 6-week-old son, Bennett. “It’s fun competing against your friends,” Scheffler said. “But at the same time, it’s difficult. Because part of me wants him to miss the putt and part of me wants him to make the putt. ... But he should remember that putt he made on 18, because it was pretty special. And he’s a great player and a great champion.”

Coming off a tie for 41st in the U.S. Open – by far his worst finish of the year -- Scheffler trailed Kim by three strokes after the first round, by two after the second round and by one heading to the tee on Sunday.

Scheffler took a one-shot lead over Kim with three straight birdies on Nos. 13-15 — he had putts for eagle on two of them. While Hoge signed for a 62 to finish at 20 under, and Im joined him there, Scheffler and Kim matched pars over the next two holes to set up the surprising finish.

Scheffler and Kim share a June 21 birthday — Scheffler is six years older — and they celebrated with New Haven pizza before the tournament about 30 miles north. The Dallas-area residents played together in the final group on Sunday, chatting and joking around.

But only one of them could hold the trophy at the end.

And just like it’s been so often, it was Scheffler.

Kim said being in a pack of leaders with his birthday buddy allowed him to focus on his own game.

“You don’t need to worry about him, because he’s going to play well,” Kim said. “Obviously he’s a phenomenal player, world No. 1, all those titles. But at the same time for me he’s just Scottie Scheffler, he’s just a good friend.

“To come down with someone that I play a lot of golf with, who beats me a lot at home — and, unfortunately, he beat me in the playoff too,” Kim said. “But it definitely made it a lot more enjoyable out there.”

New York, Utah and Colorado 2024 primaries: What's at stake in Tuesday's elections

A guide to the key races, including a bitter democratic primary battle, the fight for mitt romney's seat and lauren boebert's district-hopping gambit..

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Voters in New York, Utah and Colorado will head to the polls on Tuesday to cast their ballots in statewide primaries with national implications.

Here is a brief guide to several of Tuesday’s key matchups as well as a primer on what’s at stake in the fall.

A bitter Democratic primary in New York

In New York, all eyes are on the acrimonious Democratic primary battle between incumbent Rep. Jamaal Bowman and George Latimer , his centrist challenger, to represent the state’s 16th Congressional District.

At a rally over the weekend, Bowman was joined by two of the country’s most prominent progressives : Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who represents New York’s 14th Congressional District and is not facing a primary challenge. Latimer, a Westchester County executive, has been endorsed by Hillary Clinton.

One of the key issues roiling the race has been the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Bowman was among the first prominent Democrats to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, angering pro-Israel groups that have poured millions of dollars into Latimer’s campaign.

The race to replace Romney in Utah

In Utah, there are four key races to watch, including one that will likely decide the successor to retiring GOP Sen. Mitt Romney :

Gubernatorial: Republican Gov. Spencer Cox is an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump who is being challenged by Phil Lyman, a right-wing election denier. Trump has not formally endorsed Lyman, and Cox is widely expected to easily win Tuesday’s primary.

Senate: Since Democrats haven’t won a Senate seat in Utah since 1970, Tuesday’s Republican primary will likely decide who will replace Romney. The leading candidates include Rep. John Curtis, an environmentalist who, like Romney, is a moderate conservative; former state House Speaker Brad Wilson, a Trump backer; and Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs, who was endorsed by the former president.

House: In Utah’s Second Congressional District, incumbent Rep. Celeste Maloy, who has been endorsed by Trump, is facing a challenge from combat veteran Colby Jenkins, who is being backed by several prominent Trump supporters, including Vivek Ramaswamy and Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Tommy Tuberville of Alabama. In the open race to represent Utah’s Third Congressional District, state Sen. Mike Kennedy, a Trump supporter who is skeptical of U.S. financial support for Ukraine, is being challenged by Case Lawrence, a self-described “trampoline park entrepreneur.”

Boebert’s district switcheroo

In Colorado, there are two House races to watch after Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert decided to switch congressional districts following her near-loss to Democrat Adam Frisch in 2022 .

In the state’s Third Congressional District — the one Boebert abandoned — former state Rep. Ron Hanks, a Trump supporter who was at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, is taking on Jeff Hurd, who was described by Politico as a “business-friendly attorney.” The winner will likely face Frisch, the presumptive Democratic nominee, in the fall. In recent weeks, Colorado Democrats have aired campaign ads in the hopes of elevating Hanks , who they view as the weaker candidate.

In the state’s Fourth Congressional District, Boebert — who was endorsed by Trump — is favored to win the open primary for the seat that was vacated by Rep. Ken Buck, who retired in March.

But there is also a special election Tuesday to replace Buck for the remainder of his term. Boebert is not running in that race. Greg Lopez, a former mayor of Parker, Colo., and an outspoken election denier, is. Lopez is expected to win against Trisha Calvarese, his Democratic challenger. But Lopez has already said he is not running in the fall, clearing Boebert’s path for another term in Congress.

Off the TV screen and into real life: An MSNBC event illustrates the rise of 'event journalism'

For one weekend day this fall in New York — and for a price — MSNBC fans can see many of their favorite personalities in real life

NEW YORK — MSNBC is inviting its fans to a one-day “Democracy 2024” event this September with live panels and a dinner with stars like Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes and Ari Melber, part of the company’s entrance into the burgeoning field of events journalism.

Live events are a growing business for many news outlets, forced to think of different ways to make money with readership, viewership and advertising revenue declining. MSNBC has ramped up its effort this year with the help of creative director Luke Russert.

The journalism-centered events business has grown in fits and starts before accelerating in recent years. It is particularly robust in Washington, with the Post, Politico, Semafor, Punchbowl News and Puck all active.

“The fact that we’ve seen others in the industry host similar events, that’s been a bit of a precedent,” MSNBC President Rashida Jones said. “One of the benefits of our brand and our content is that there are a lot ways to engage with it.”

Growth of an industry adjacent to journalism

When Semafor started two years ago, co-founder and CEO Justin B. Smith made it a central part of the business; the company held eight events before publishing its first article. He calls it “live journalism,” and it was quickly profitable through the sale of sponsorships.

Semafor will hold about 70 or 80 events this year, with the centerpiece being the World Economy Summit in April, an annual meeting Smith has positioned as Davos on the Potomac River.

“It’s a great place to make news and a great place to make money,” he said.

Before Semafor, Smith built up the live events business at Bloomberg and the Atlantic, the latter instrumental in the popular Aspen Ideas Festival. The New Yorker magazine has also built an influential festival that mixes news and culture.

Overall, events journalism didn’t catch fire quickly, in part because organizing them was a skill in short supply at news outlets, Smith said. There were also some notable missteps: A reporter for The New York Times quit under pressure in 2019 after using a racial slur in a Times-sponsored student trip to Peru; the newspaper doesn’t host such trips anymore.

And The Washington Post was embarrassed in 2009 when it was revealed it had planned to charge lobbyists as much as $250,000 to attend an off-the-record salon, hosted by its publisher, with newsmakers and journalists.

That’s a clear ethical transgression for selling access. But Thomas Rosenstiel, a journalism professor at the University of Maryland, said he didn’t see a problem with an event like MSNBC’s.

“If the product is civic knowledge and debate, that’s what news organizations do,” Rosenstiel said. “That’s the business that they’re in. It’s just the delivery system is different.”

MSNBC dips its toe in

MSNBC’s “Democracy 2024” has faint echoes of the annual “BravoCon” run by its corporate cousin, although in this case news personalities are replacing real housewives and Andy Cohen. Last year’s 3-day “BravoCon” in Las Vegas cost fans $550 for entry, with a special VIP package of $1,200 that included the right to move to the front of the line at the bar.

“We do not have that feature,” MSNBC’s Jones said.

Ticket prices for the Sept. 7 MSNBC day at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which also includes a film screening and reception, start at $119 per person, the network said on Monday.

Hayes, Jen Psaki, Joy Reid, Alex Wagner, Andrea Mitchell and Katy Tur will lead one panel discission on campaign issues, and stat man Steve Kornacki will break down the latest poll results. Maddow, Melber, Lawrence O’Donnell, Stephanie Ruhle, Michael Steele, Alicia Menendez and Symone Sanders Townsend will run a second panel.

Dipping its toe in the business, MSNBC held an invite-only event in Washington before the State of the Union address. Hayes went on a multi-city tour surrounding his “Why is this Happening?” podcast, and was joined by Maddow for a discussion at New York’s Town Hall.

“Any opportunity I can have in front of a live crowd I love,” Hayes told The Associated Press. “I’m a theater kid at heart. I probably feel more comfortable in a room with actual people in the audience that I do on live TV.”

Hayes said it offered an unparalleled feedback mechanism.

“You can tell when people are with you, when you’ve lost people,” he said. “You can tell when people are laughing, when they’re sighing in exasperation about something you’ve told them. You can navigate that. One of the hardest things when I started doing TV was not having that.”

This story has been updated to correct the title of an event held by Semafor. It is the World Economy Summit, not the World Economic Forum.

4 Panthers underrated sleepers who could break out in 2024 NFL season

Carolina, these sleepers could be big!

Bryce Young in the middle, 4 mystery players around him, Carolina Panthers wallpaper in the background

The Carolina Panthers are poised for a bounce-back season in 2024. Following a disappointing 2-15 finish in 2023, the front office aggressively tried to address their needs during the offseason. With key offseason moves shaping the roster , including high-profile acquisitions and strategic draft picks, the team is poised for an exciting campaign ahead. Sure, star players often dominate headlines. However, it's the underrated sleepers who could hold the key to the Panthers' success this season. These hidden gems, poised to break out, bring a blend of talent, determination, and untapped potential that could elevate Carolina to new heights in their 2024 NFL campaign.

2024 Panthers Offseason

thomas sanders tour

The 2024 Carolina Panthers offseason was marked by significant changes. These began with the dismissal of head coach Frank Reich after just one year. That was a move reflecting irreparable differences with owner David Tepper. Despite this, optimism surrounds the potential of new head coach Dave Canales . Carolina saw notable departures including Brian Burns, Frankie Luvu, Jeremy Chinn, Bradley Bozeman, and Hayden Hurst. The handling of Burns' departure was particularly impactful. It casts a shadow over their offseason moves. Nevertheless, the Panthers remained proactive. They secured talents like Jadeveon Clowney , Robert Hunt, Damien Lewis, and Diontae Johnson. With their original first-round pick unavailable, the team also faced challenges in the draft. That said, they managed to acquire promising prospects in Xavier Legette and Jonathon Brooks. Meanwhile, Ja'Tavion Sanders shows promise as a future top tight end.

Here we'll look at the four Carolina Panthers underrated sleeper players who could break out in the 2024 NFL season.

Jonathon Brooks, RB

Jonathon Brooks was poised to be the top running back selected in this year's draft, albeit in a lackluster class. However, that was before an ACL tear in early December altered his trajectory slightly. Despite this setback, he still emerged as the first running back chosen, though later than expected. Questions arise about the Panthers' decision to draft a running back early given other roster needs. Still, Brooks has a reasonably clear path to the top of the depth chart ahead of competitors like Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders, and Rashaad Penny. Carolina's significant investment in the offensive line during the offseason provides a promising environment for whoever claims the starting role.

Ja'Tavion Sanders, TE

Ja'Tavion Sanders comes to Carolina from the Texas Longhorns. That was where he showcased his talent amidst a crowded offensive lineup. Over two seasons, Sanders amassed 99 receptions for 1,295 yards and seven touchdowns. His arrival fills a void in Carolina's tight end room, which lacked consistency. They previously had players like Hayden Hurst, Ian Thomas, Tommy Tremble, and Stephen Sullivan rotating without establishing a reliable presence. Sanders' ability to move the chains and stabilize the position should not be underestimated. He adds another dimension to the Panthers' offense alongside new additions Diontae Johnson, Xavier Legette, and Jonathon Brooks.

Xavier Legette, WR

Xavier Legette made a significant impact in his final season at South Carolina. He recorded 1,255 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Standing at 6'1 and 221 pounds with impressive speed and agility metrics, including a 4.39 40-yard dash and a 40-inch vertical jump, Legette stands out as one of the top physical talents in a stacked rookie wide receiver class. His ability to quickly develop chemistry with quarterback Bryce Young will determine his on-field relevance early in his rookie campaign. Legette's potential makes him an interesting new target for Young. This could be one of the most exciting QB-WR duos to watch out for in 2024.

Trevin Wallace, LB

Trevin Wallace completes the Panthers' quartet of underrated sleepers. He joins from Kentucky where he impressed scouts with his instincts, athleticism, and impact on the field. Drafted in the third round, Wallace brings a hard-hitting presence to Carolina's defense. He can certainly defend the run, cover in passing situations, and apply pressure on quarterbacks. As the Panthers seek to fortify their defensive identity, Wallace's growth and contributions could play a pivotal role in shaping a future NFC contender.

Looking Ahead

As the Carolina Panthers prepare for the 2024 NFL season, the spotlight often shines brightest on established stars and high-profile acquisitions. However, it's the underrated sleepers like Jonathon Brooks, Ja'Tavion Sanders, Xavier Legette, and Trevin Wallace who could hold the key to unlocking Carolina's full potential. With their unique talents and untapped potential, these players have the opportunity to make significant contributions. Any or all of them could emerge as breakout stars in the NFL landscape. As the season unfolds, keep a close eye on these hidden gems who have the power to shape the Panthers' journey toward success in the competitive world of professional football.
