Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The USS Shenzhou You Need To Know

You say goodbye, I say Vulcan Hello.

Star Trek Discovery USS Shenzhou

Back in 2017, advertising for the then upcoming Star Trek: Discovery opted not to spoil the look of the titular vessel and instead focused on the Walker-class USS Shenzhou. In fact, when that two-part pilot premiered, you would've been forgiven if you thought the show wasn't actually even going to feature a USS Discovery or Jason Isaacs, but would instead follow the adventures of the delightful crew of the USS Shenzhou under the command of jovial and wise Captain Philippa Georgiou – plus that guy from 30 Rock playing the ship's doctor.

And then, you know, Michael did a mutiny, Georgiou got knived, the Shenzhou blew up, and now we live in the 32nd century...

Despite being something of a mislead, however, the USS Shenzhou continued to cast a long shadow on Star Trek: Discovery. The destruction of the ship and death of Georgiou would inform much of Michael Burnham's motivation for that first season. And while the Shenzhou really only lasted two full episodes (with a couple cameos peppered in later), the ship was as fully fleshed out as any "hero" ship in Star Trek's pantheon of vessels.

Cast your mind back to the inaugural starship of the CBS All Access slash Paramount Plus era and let's explore ten secrets of the USS Shenzhou NCC-1227, RIP.

10. Old Reliant-able

Star Trek Discovery USS Shenzhou

One of the many lasting contributions from Star Trek: Discovery creator Bryan Fuller, the USS Shenzhou was intended to evoke the franchise's aesthetic past while nodding toward its progressive future.

At Fuller's request, the Star Trek: Discovery art department used the USS Reliant from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan as a jumping off point, intending the Shenzhou to recall Star Trek starships that audiences would be familiar with. According to Fuller:

We wanted the Shenzhou to be a much more traditional design so that when you got to the Discovery and it looked different, you wondered why it was so different.

However, there was another reason Fuller wanted to evoke The Wrath of Khan's iconic Starfleet vessel:

The Reliant has a wonderful history of minority representation. We thought it would be a nice nod to echo its design with the Shenzhou because we wanted to give it a context that non-white Star Trek fans might appreciate.

For Star Trek: Discovery, the Shenzhou would be another step toward depicting a multi-racial future both in the name of the ship herself and her commanding officer, Captain Philippa Georgiou:

I wanted an Asian female captain and calling the ship the Shenzhou after the Chinese space station felt like a wonderful way of acknowledging the scientific achievement of the Chinese community.

I played Shipyard Bar Patron (Uncredited) in Star Trek (2009).

USS Enterprise

USS was an identifying prefix used before the names of sea-faring ships on Earth and space-faring ships of United Earth and United Federation of Planets . The abbreviation has alternately stood for " U nited S tates S hip ", " U nited S pace S hip ", and " U nited S tar S hip ".

History [ ]

As shorthand for "United States Ship," the US Navy used the USS prefix on the hulls of various sea warships, such as aircraft carriers and ironclads, including: USS Enterprise (CV-6) , USS Enterprise (CVN-65) , and USS Monitor . ( ENT : " Storm Front "; Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home ; TOS : " The Cage ")

According to Porter , a so-called " patriot ", after viewing the name " USS Voyager " on the stealth plane that crashed on his property in Arizona , " "U.S.S." equals Federal government . The Federal government is the Beast . " ( VOY : " Future's End, Part II ")

Some early spaceships from Earth, such as the USS Enterprise (XCV 330) , also placed the USS designation on their hull . ( Star Trek: The Motion Picture )

USS Columbia and USS Enterprise

USS Enterprise and USS Columbia

Starfleet used the "USS" designation on certain computer graphics for United Earth NX-class starships , such as Enterprise NX-01 and Columbia NX-02 . However, they did not label the hulls of the starships, and the ships were not commonly addressed with the prefix. ( ENT : " Divergence ")

On Federation starships operated by Starfleet, the "USS" prefix was more prominently featured on the hull of the ship and as part of the starship's official title. USS was referred to as standing for either "United Space Ship" ( TOS : " The Cage ", " The Menagerie, Part I ", " Space Seed ", " The Gamesters of Triskelion ", " Patterns of Force ", " Assignment: Earth ", " Elaan of Troyius ") or "United Star Ship." ( TOS : " The Squire of Gothos ", " Court Martial ") This designation was used as early as 2167 on a Daedalus -class starship, the USS Essex . ( TNG : " Power Play ")

The same practice was also continued by the Federation in the alternate reality after the timeline was disrupted by the temporal incursion of the Romulan Nero . ( Star Trek )

Background information [ ]

In his original March 1964 Star Trek pitch (p. 3), Gene Roddenberry utilized the prefix "S.S." for his then-envisioned primary space vessel, Yorktown . While the abbreviation has a real world maritime counterpart signifying "Single-screw Steamship", Roddenberry refrained on that occasion from specifying the abbreviation, but it stands to reason he either assumed "Spaceship" or " Starship ", as hereafter indicated.

It was only after the series' pilot episode " The Cage " was picked up, and Roddenberry had worked out his initial pitch into the more fully worked out first version of The Star Trek guide internal document – famed in later Star Trek -lore under its "The Writer's Bible" denominator – that he amended the "S.S." to "U.S.S.", this time emphatically specifying the abbreviation to stand for "United Spaceship", and most certainly not for "United States Spaceship", as the old notion of traditional statehood had been abandoned in his vision of the future. (3rd revision, 17 April 1967, p. 1) Author Stephen Whitfield has related in his reference book The Making of Star Trek (p. 112) how Roddenberry had to actually mount a vigorous defense of the meaning of his new amended prefix against chauvinistic NBC network executives who were lamenting why it could not be "a good, safe patriotic United States spaceship."

USS Enterprise (XCV 330), TMP

USS Enterprise (XCV 330)

The first spaceship from Earth known to use "USS" was first shown in Star Trek: The Motion Picture , in a picture of the USS Enterprise (XCV 330) on display on the recreation deck of the refitted USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) . The placement of a desktop model of this craft in Star Trek Into Darkness suggests that the ship predates United Earth, so the USS designation may have still meant "United States Ship" at that point in history.

Shortly before Star Trek: Enterprise began its initial airing, Rick Berman implied that Enterprise NX-01 was purposefully without the "USS" prefix because it wasn't a Federation starship. ( Star Trek: Communicator  issue 134 , p. 13) The use of "USS" by Starfleet before the formation of the Federation was only seen on a computer graphic in the Enterprise episode " Divergence ". This graphic had both the Enterprise and the Columbia designated with the USS prefix, which may have been a mistake on the part of the graphics designers, as neither ships' hull designation used "USS".

At a later point in time and in regard to the original prefix "SS", Gregory Jein, Inc. model builder Bruce MacRae and co-builder of the SS Vico studio model , has postulated the "SS" prefix to stand for "Survey Ship", a designation that actually fitted the "job description" of most such endowed vessels featured in the Star Trek live-action productions.     USS Johnston : Tier IX American Premium Destroyer 1942 (How to Obtain)

The USS Johnston was a sizable, fast, and heavily armed destroyer. As World War II began, naval armament limitation treaties became obsolete. This resulted in the construction of new ships with greater displacements, enabling considerable enhancements in various design aspects, especially in air defense capabilities.

update

Key Features

  • Johnston boasts a main battery of five 127mm guns .
  • These guns have a unique burst fire mode and can fire SAP shells .
  • In short engagements with enemy destroyers, her combination of firepower and concealment makes her extremely deadly .
  • Captains should aim to land their first shots effectively, especially considering her typically challenging ballistics .
  • Johnston carries a load of ten torpedoes .
  • These torpedoes have characteristics similar to those of the Gearing , and they can reach extreme range .
  • However, the reload time is quite long .
  • Johnston’s consumables include Engine Boost and Defensive AA Fire .
  • These are consistent with other USN destroyers and occupy the same slot.
  • Johnston excels in close-quarters combat with enemy destroyers.
  • Her burst fire mode and SAP shells make her lethal in short engagements.
  • Captains must focus on precise aiming to maximize damage output.
  • Using her normal firing mode to adjust aim beforehand is advisable.
  • Johnston’s American Smoke Generator provides long-duration smoke cover.
  • She can engage larger targets from safety using her long-range torpedoes .
  • However, caution is necessary when facing enemy Surveillance Radar .

Finally something looks like a good Tier IX premium ship. It'll be most likely only doubloons though. Other varriants are research bereau or steel

No, There is Coal resource aswell. And we didn't get any new Coal ship for a while or lack of them a lot. Tier 9 is common tier for Coal ships. So, there was never actually doubloon-only premium ships, exept bundles but those ships also come in game for other resources anyway.

Doubloons, as I predicted. Similar to Sun Yat Sen, Karl IV Johan and Navarin, now they only release good Tier IX premium ships for doubloons.
