The upcoming tour will be AGNOSTIC FRONT 's first since vocalist Roger Miret revealed last September that his cancer was in remission.

After Miret was diagnosed with cancer in early 2021, a long road of tests and diagnoses led to a complex initial surgery and lengthy hospital stay. Even though the original surgery was complicated, the results were extremely positive. The cancer was successfully removed and Roger is now in complete remission and all signs of cancer have disappeared.

In early October, Roger said that he underwent another surgery after "running a fever for two weeks straight" and developing "an infection."

A GoFundMe page has been launched where fans can donate to help Roger pay medical care costs.

Last month, Miret told the "Smokin Word" podcast that he wasn't sure when he would be able to return to the live stage. "The truth is I'm still under doctor care, and I go there once a month to this one guy, and every few months another one," he said. "I just flew to Seattle — I was just in Seattle on Monday and I had to go see a doctor on Tuesday and came back on Wednesday. Just like that. I went to go see a specialist in Seattle 'cause I can't keep playing these games. 'Cause I've got two other concerns. I'm not completely out of the woods. That was the one that was really bad, but I've got two other concerns. Somebody told me about this doctor up there, so I flew out there… He fitted me in. He scanned everything, and I'll know in two more weeks. So I've gotta get all these clearances, but I'm being optimistic, being positive. I've just gotta figure out how to get moving again. 'Cause when you sing, you sing from your gut. But I keep leaving things scheduled. We were supposed to tour in March. In a way I'm glad we're not now, 'cause that's pretty damn close. But I was leaving things open.

"It's hard," he continued. "When you hit the stage and you're, like, 'I'm gonna take it easy,' that don't happen. You just go crazy. But I've really gotta take it easy 'cause I've either gotta focus on breathing, 'cause I've gotta sing, or just jump around like a jerk and let everybody else sing. I can't do both right now. And I'm still not ready; there's still some nerve damage I'm dealing with. I'm in PT, physical therapy, for one, and the other one, it was attached to a nerve bundle. The first operation, they had to pull my bladder off — everything was pulled away — and the doctor told my wife that it's possible [there would be] some nerve damage 'cause it was attached to a nerve bundle. They thought it was gonna be, like, a two-and-a-half-hour surgery; it was almost six hours, and they had to go really careful around the nerves. There's two issues I'm dealing with, and one of the PTs is working the other one. I don't know yet, but they say, 'Give it some time.'"

Miret went on to say that he is "hoping" he can make AGNOSTIC FRONT 's tour dates in May but cautioned that "everything keeps getting pushed."

Born in Cuba, Miret fled with his family to the U.S. to escape the Castro regime. He joined AGNOSTIC FRONT in 1983, and the seminal New York harcore group released classics like "United Blood" , "Victim In Pain" and "Cause For Alarm" over the next several years.

In 2017, Miret released a memoir, "My Riot: Agnostic Front, Grit, Guts, And Glory" , which documented his struggles to adapt to life in the U.S. after his family fled the Castro regime. According to the Phoenix New Times , the book delved into many facets of Miret 's life: the grinding poverty of his childhood; living as a teenager squatter; becoming deeply enmeshed in downtown New York’s hardcore scene; and later turning to drug-running to support his family.

In addition to fronting AGNOSTIC FRONT , Miret has also played with ROGER MIRET AND THE DISASTERS and is a member of THE ALLIGATORS .

For the past several years, Roger has resided in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Sick of it All (they are Hardcore, not punk) I can always tell if someone is a wannabe if they call hardcore bands thrash, crossover or punk. Hardcore is one of its own. Real fans know this. I saw the hardcore icons for the first time at the 1997 Warped Tour. They weren't even listed on the lineup. While entering the clownfest, I saw Pete Kohler and asked him if they were playing that day. He affirmed and directed me to the stage they'd be on. It was at that show that I fell in love with Hardcore and I've called SickOfItAll my favorite band ever since.

The show was excellent. It was a small but perfect venue for a Hardcore show which had great sound and a classic crowd to go with S.I. legends Enrage and The Godfathers of Hardcore Agnostic Front! The venue Mother Pugs in Staten Island has proven they can now expertly provide a great venue for any and all Hardcore comers and goers to put on a great show in the Hardcore scene on Staten Island.

More than AMAZING. These guys are something not belonging to this world. The gig are always full of energy and they involve the audience and they always spend time after the show to say hello to everyone . What more you can expect for a band?!

Larry David Spills On Bruce Springsteen's Wild 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' Line

Ben Blanchet

Larry David revealed that Bruce Springsteen came up with a hilarious line on the spot during one of his guest appearances on the final season of “ Curb Your Enthusiasm .”

The “Curb” creator — who spoke at HBO & Tribeca Film’s “An Evening With Larry David” event on Friday — said the Boss “absolutely” improvised his “I didn’t make you out for a floor fucker” line in his cameo on the show last month.

“He made that up,” David said of the line .

“Curb” star Susie Essman , who appeared alongside David at the event, said the iconic rocker did “fantastic” on the show, according to People magazine .

“What you want from an improviser is they surprise you,” she said.

Springsteen, who made a brief appearance earlier in the final season, also made a cameo in the show’s penultimate episode titled “Ken/Kendra” where he gets COVID-19. The Boss points to David as the reason he got sick and cancels stops on his tour.

The plotline of the episode was written and Springsteen’s scene was shot in 2022, months before he postponed shows in real life “ due to illness ” and he along with his wife Patti Scialfa tested positive for COVID-19, The Hollywood Reporter noted .

The Boss would later postpone stops on his world tour in September after he announced that he was getting treated for symptoms of peptic ulcer disease.

“Bruce got sick and had to cancel his tour, and I just turned to Larry and said, ‘You have an amazing ability to manifest negative things. You are the supreme negative manifester,’” the show’s executive producer Jeff Schaffer told THR.

“I remember going, ‘Oh my God, it’s exactly what we did.’ In the show, we say he had complications so his health was really at risk. It played out just like we said — which I feel terrible about! The good news is he got better, and he was hilarious. Happy ending.”

Schaffer said that Springsteen, who is currently on the road with the E Street Band, “loved” his scenes.

“He’d seen the show, but a lot of people haven’t worked the way we do, where it’s not all scripted. Lots of things get said. And we kept telling him, ‘We’ll use the best stuff,’ so he could try everything,” Schaffer explained.

“And he played around. He knew the basic beats, but he was in there adding and slugging around. We showed him the scenes because we were so happy with how they turned out.”

HBO aired the final episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” on Sunday.

How ‘curb your enthusiasm’ manifested bruce springsteen’s postponed tour — and expect series finale “boomerangs”.

The penultimate episode of the HBO series saw Larry David giving the Boss COVID and endangering his health — which preceded similar real-life events. Executive producer Jeff Schaffer reveals that story and more in a weekly episode chat heading into the series finale.

Curb Your Enthusiasm, Bruce Springsteen, Larry David

[This story contains spoilers from season 12, episode nine of Curb Your Enthusiasm , “Ken/Kendra.”]

Life imitated art again with the latest Curb Your Enthusiasm . Or, if you ask show boss Jeff Schaffer , “life imitated silly art.”

Hbo commemorates 'curb your enthusiasm' finale with larry david -- and some surprise guests, georgia secretary of state sent letter to larry david over 'curb' voting law plot.

“That’s Larry David’s middle name: Larry ‘Involvement’ David,” said Springsteen on CNN when making his first Curb cameo.

Now, in the ninth episode of season 12 — the penultimate episode before the Emmy-winning HBO comedy’s series finale this weekend — Springsteen returns. In the show, the Boss is so impressed with Larry’s political stance that he wants to meet the Seinfeld creator in real life.

But when they sit down at a table together in the home of the Greenes (Susie Essman and Jeff Garlin ), several things go awry. First, Springsteen’s manager Ken (played by trans comedian Ian Harvie) identifies himself as being formerly Kendra Morris and recalls how they used to have sex (and always on the floor). This prompts one of the episode’s best lines when Springsteen is aghast at Larry being a “floor fucker,” and Schaffer says that line was all the Boss.

“Bruce telling Larry, ‘I never took you for a floor fucker,’ is one of my favorite moments ever — like, in life,” recalls Schaffer when speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the episode. “We knew we were going to be talking about floor fucking, but that was all Bruce. That was Bruce chiming in, which was amazing. We were like, ‘What! He’s so funny.'”

Schaffer adds, “If the music thing doesn’t work out, he definitely has a future in comedy.”

This, of course, will not bode well for Larry’s reputation for his upcoming trial, where he faces up to one year in prison and a fine of $10,000 for obstructing the election process in the state of Georgia. He also was threatened in this episode with being “Me Too-ed” after he offended his masseuse.

The COVID Curb plotline was written in 2022, and they filmed the scene with Springsteen in one day in December 2022, on the improv comedy’s final day of shooting that year. “It was a long time to keep that one secret,” says Schaffer.

Then, flash-forward to February 2023, when Schaffer and David were editing the season, and Springsteen in real life ended up postponing three of his shows in one week “due to illness.” Then, in April 2023, Springsteen and wife Patti Scialfa came down with COVID. And in August 2023, the Boss ended up postponing more shows after having “taken ill.” In September, it was then revealed he had been diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease, and he ended up canceling all remaining 2023 dates so he could recover.

Schaffer says when they initially reached out to Springsteen’s manager, they never thought the guest role would materialize. But quickly after the pitch, the Boss said yes; he was a fan of the show. After they wrapped, they sent Springsteen his scenes, because the Curb team was so happy with the final result.

“He loved them, which was great. He was putting a lot of faith in us,” says Schaffer. “He’d seen the show, but a lot of people haven’t worked the way we do, where it’s not all scripted. Lots of things get said. And we kept telling him, ‘We’ll use the best stuff,’ so he could try everything. And he played around. He knew the basic beats, but he was in there adding and slugging around. We showed him the scenes because we were so happy with how they turned out.”

The plot around how Larry likes to have sex ends up circling around when his ex-wife Cheryl ( played by Cheryl Hines ) calls him out for lying to her about why he wanted to have sex on the floor. (“It’s hot, like in the movies,” she says he told her.)

Schaffer still marvels that they got Springsteen to do such a big role and coyly teases that the Boss might make some sort of return in next week’s finale.

“Everyone was so excited that Bruce had that brief cameo in episode two, and Larry and I were sitting there thinking, ‘If you guys only knew that he’s doing all these scenes in show nine.’ We were able to shoot a lot of stuff with Bruce in the one day we had him.”

He adds, “Things come back to haunt Larry every week. His life is a comedy haunted mansion, everything boomerangs.”

Below, with only one episode remaining before Curb signs off for good (maybe, hopefully not), Schaffer takes THR through some more highlights from the penultimate episode in season 12, “Ken/Kendra.”

  • Another tidbit on Springsteen: The Don Henley comparison was written by the Curb writers, but the Boss knew the Eagles frontman would “be cool with it.” Schaffer says, “We wrote that as a rock icon kind of mad lib.”
  • J.B. Smoove’s Leon “didn’t want to get COVID because he didn’t know what it was going to do to his dick,” says Schaffer of the hilarity that ensues when Larry’s housemate desperately tries to avoid getting sick. “We often like to surprise Larry. I didn’t tell him that J.B. was going to come through the house in a gas mask with an arm full of toilet paper,” says Schaffer, revealing that they often try to catch their star and creator off guard to get his most honest reaction. “Larry interacts with the world, and the world’s against him. So I create the world against him, for maximum surprise. His reactions are so good.”
  • A great example of one of those reactions comes in the epic staircase war of words between Larry and his oft-nemesis, Susie Greene (Essman): “That Larry-Susie fight in the stairwell is one for the ages. Them arguing that each other is a virus, capped off by Susie saying, ‘Larry, you cold-hearted, COVID-carrying cocksucker,’ is one of my favorite Larry-Susie arguments of all time.” Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav was actually on set that day of filming. “He got a giant earful of raw Curb ,” says Schaffer, adding that the virus insults were all hurled in one take. But, “You’re seeing on Larry’s side every frame before he laughs. Larry’s reaction to Susie calling him that was taken from a different reaction because he was laughing so hard. Larry is always going to blink first with Susie. Susie screaming at him is his kryptonite.”
  • A restaurant being downgraded from an A to a C rating mid-meal is a plot plucked from real life, when Schaffer, David, former writers Alec Berg and David Mandel, and other Curb writers were out for lunch in Palisades Village when filming season six. “We watched them change the letter right in front of us and no one could believe it. They just changed the letter in front of Larry David and the Curb writers, what do they think is going to happen? Talk about low-hanging, probably unwashed fruit. We always wanted to do it. I know it seems impossible, but it really is true.”
  • The name of the book written by Young Larry director Les McCrabb (played by Matt Berry), “To Hang a Lantern on It,” originates from Schaffer’s pre- Seinfeld job at Witt/Thomas Productions where he worked on “a show starring an unknown comic named Jeff Garlin and then on Herman’s Head .” Schaffer says the show was filled with idioms that end up showing up in the fictional Curb script, like, “America doesn’t want to see that” and “hang a lantern on it.” Really “hacky sitcom stuff,” he says. “We would do that jokingly when writing, and so when we needed a title for this book written by this sort of journeyman director, I was like, it has to be ‘Hang a Lantern on It.’ I wrote a solid two pages and worked out some feelings of what it’s like working out at a schmaltzy place. ( Laughing .) The exact stuff that Seinfeld and Curb is the antidote for.”
  • The fictional “Vonderdonk” cheese from last week’s episode is now actually being sold at The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills (available during store hours). “I’m sure the cheese is excellent, just don’t leave it in your car,” quips Schaffer.
  • In other real-life news, Felicity Huffman booked her first TV gig following her role in the college admissions scandal and after Lori Loughlin parodied herself with a Curb cameo earlier this season. “I can’t imagine that anyone is looking to us for hourlong trends, but I’m very happy that Lori got to be the first to come back triumphantly,” says Schaffer.
  • With one week left before the finale, Schaffer responds to Garlin recently sharing how emotional he got when the executive producer-director called cut on the final scene. “I remember doing a few extra takes to make sure we got it because it was important,” says Schaffer of next week’s ending. “Once we did, we were done. And, who wants it to be done? Then I realized, someone has to say something! So I looked at Larry, because village was right next to the set, and said, ‘Are you good?’ He said ‘Yeah, I’m good.’ So I said, ‘That’s a wrap on the greatest sitcom ever.’ Everyone applauded and hugged. Then I turned around and Jeff was yeah, just sitting quietly off to the side crying. Very sweet.”
  • How will Curb tie it all together in the series finale? “It’s definitely longer than our usual episodes. We have a lot to say,” says Schaffer, always tight-lipped about any spoilers. “I can’t believe that we’ve arrived at this moment. But I think it’s been a really lively season and the finale is a very funny, fitting end to it all.”

Curb Your Enthusiasm  releases its series finale Sunday at 10 p.m. on  HBO  and Max.   Read  THR’ s chats with Schaffer from the season here .

If you’ve spent any time scrolling through the health and wellness corners of social media, you’ve likely come across many products claiming to improve your metabolism. But what exactly is your metabolism?

Everything you expose your body to – from lifestyle to an airborne virus – influences your physical characteristics, such as your blood pressure and energy levels. Together, these biological characteristics are referred to as your phenotype . And the biological system that most directly influences your phenotype is your metabolism.

So if you are eating something, take medications, smoke or exercise, your metabolism is responsible for transferring that biological information throughout your body for it to adapt.

Metabolism is energy conversion

Your metabolism consists of a network of tens of thousands of molecules and proteins that convert the food you eat into the energy and building blocks your body uses to move, grow and repair itself. At the chemical level, energy metabolism begins when the three macronutrients – carbohydrates, fats and protein – are broken down atom by atom to release electrons from chemical bonds. These electrons charge components in cells called mitochondria .

Akin to how batteries work, mitochondria harness this electrical potential to create a different form of chemical energy that the rest of the cell can use.

Simply put, a primary role of metabolism is to convert chemical energy into electrical energy and back into chemical energy. How this energy is transferred throughout the body might play a central role in determining whether you’re sick or healthy .

I am a biochemist who studies the various networks of metabolism that are used as your body changes. My team and I have been able to define specific traits of metabolism, such as the presence and amount of certain metabolites – products made from breaking down macronutrients – across a wide range of conditions.

These conditions include diseases such as COVID-19 , diabetes , multiple sclerosis and sickle cell anemia , to experiencing unique environments such as radiation exposure , high altitude , aging and sports performance . Each of these settings influences which parts of your metabolic network are used and how they communicate with one another.

Elite athletes define the upper limits

Given the alarming rise in obesity and its associated metabolic syndrome – about 1 in 8 people across the globe was living with obesity in 2022 – defining a healthy or impaired metabolism can help identify what’s gone wrong and how to address it.

Elite athletes offer a prime population to study metabolic function at its best, since their network of molecular and chemical reactions must be finely tuned to compete on the world stage.

Traditionally, lactate threshold has been a critical measure of athletic performance by pinpointing exercise intensity when lactate starts to rise in muscles and blood.

Contrary to common belief, lactate is not merely a waste product but an energy source as well, and it accumulates when it’s produced faster than mitochondria can use it. While a moderately active person might reach their threshold at an exercise intensity of around 2 watts per kilogram, elite cyclists can sustain an intensity up to nearly two to three times higher .

When comparing the lactate thresholds of a group of elite cyclists, we found that the cyclists with higher thresholds had markers of better mitochondrial function. One of these markers was higher production of coenzyme A , a molecule that shuttles carbon around cells and is important for breaking down carbs, amino acids and fat into chemical energy.

Higher-performing cyclists also appeared to burn more fat and burn fat longer during a multistage world tour compared with lower-performing cyclists.

Dysfunctional metabolism in diseases like COVID-19

Your metabolism also changes if you get an acute illness such as COVID-19.

In contrast to elite cyclists, COVID-19 patients have an impaired ability to burn fat that appears to persist with long COVID . The blood of these patients at rest is similar to that of an elite cyclist’s at exhaustion. Considering that exercise intolerance frequently occurs with long COVID, this suggests mitochondrial dysfunction may play a role in COVID-related fatigue.

Burning fat uses a lot of oxygen . COVID-19 damages the red blood cells that deliver oxygen to organs. Because red blood cells have a limited ability to repair themselves , they might not function as well during the remainder of their roughly 120-day life span. This may partially explain why COVID symptoms last as long as they do in some people.

Blood donors define the middle

Blood transfusions are one of the most common clinical procedures . Over 118 million pints of blood are donated by millions of people worldwide every year. Because blood donors undergo screening to ensure they are healthy enough to donate, they are typically moderately healthy, somewhere between acute illness and elite athletic performance. Blood donors, coming from every walk of life , also have a diverse range of biological traits as a study population.

My team and I looked at blood from over 13,000 blood donors to shed light on their metabolic diversity . We found specific traits that could predict how well a donor’s blood would work in patients, which also has implications for how well that blood works in the donors themselves.

We found that one of these traits is a metabolite called kynurenine , which is produced from the breakdown of the amino acid tryptophan. We found that blood from donors with higher levels of kynurenine was less likely to restore hemoglobin levels in transfusion recipients compared with donors with lower kynurenine levels.

Kynurenine levels are higher in older donors and donors with a higher BMI, and may potentially be tied to higher levels of inflammation. In support, our group also found that kynurenine increases dramatically in runners participating in the 171-kilometer (106 miles) Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. In addition, we also identified that kynurenine is a strong marker of COVID-19 severity .

The relationship between metabolites and health outcomes reinforces the important role metabolism plays in the body. Getting a better understanding of what healthy metabolism looks like can offer unique insights into how it deviates when someone gets sick and may offer new approaches to medical treatments.
