How to reset an Apple ID if you forgot the password

Karen Haslam

iPhone and Mac users have to enter Apple ID details so frequently–when buying an app, accessing iCloud email or other services, updating an OS–that you wouldn’t think we’d forget our passwords. But we do.

Perhaps you got confused when Apple made you change to a new password; perhaps you picked one that was just too complicated to remember. Whatever the reason, forgetting the password to your Apple ID account can be a serious pain, so we’re going to explain how to reset it.

Before we get started, let’s quickly cover two slightly different scenarios. First, your password might not be working because it’s been locked by Apple for security reasons; perhaps an attempt has been made to hack it. Should this happen to you, try this tutorial: How to unlock a disabled Apple ID .

Or you might have bought an iPhone, iPad, or other Apple device second-hand, then found that the old password and Apple ID haven’t been disassociated from it. In this case you need to ask the previous owner to remove the device from their Apple iCloud account, which they can do by using the Find My app, or going to icloud.com/find , logging in and removing the old device.

If neither of those scenarios apply to you, we can get on with resetting that Apple ID. The good news is that over the years Apple has simplified this process and, as long as you’ve set up two-factor authentication, changing your Apple ID password should be very simple.

[Need some help coming up with a safe and secure password? Read our tips to make your passwords even stronger .]

How to reset an Apple ID password

Assuming you can’t just think really hard until you remember what the password is, your best bet is to reset it–and this time make sure it’s something memorable. Here’s how to do that.

The steps you need to follow will depend on the type of security you set up for your Apple account. Assuming you have two-factor authentication set up (rather than two- step verification) the process outlined below should work. Otherwise, you may have to answer some security questions and provide a 14-character Recovery Key. We discuss this further down.

  • Enter the email address you use with your Apple ID and click Continue. You will probably have to enter some text to prove you’re not a robot. If you can’t read the text, just keep clicking ‘New code’ until you can.
  • You will now have to enter the trusted phone number that is associated with your account, then press Continue.

  • If you click on the notification on a Mac you will be taken to System Settings. Click on Reset.
  • On the iPhone you’ll see “Use this phone to reset password”. Click on Allow.

New password for apple id

We look at the different ways you can reset your password and access the account in more detail below.

If you have a lot of trouble remembering passwords take a look at our round-up of the Best Password Managers .

Use a Recovery Contact

If you inherited the device from a loved one, you may be wondering how to disassociate their Apple ID from the device. Apple is aware of this scenario and has set up a method by which trusted people can recover Apple ID passwords… but it does need to have been set up in advance.

Apple cannot recover or reset the password in these circumstances (it can’t recover or reset passwords in any circumstances) but you can recover someone else’s Apple ID if you’re their Recovery Contact.

A Recovery Contact can get a one-time recovery code that can be used to unlock the account. It’s a good idea to have more than one trusted Recovery Contact.

To set up Recovery Contacts you need to do the following. Unfortunately, this needs to happen before the password is forgotten!

All the devices will need to be running at minimum iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or macOS Monterey. If you have older devices running older versions of the operating systems you need to remove them from Settings > Apple ID. Click on any device in the list and you’ll be able to see what version of iOS it is running. You can also remove old devices that you no longer use here.

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap your Apple ID at the top of the screen.
  • Tap on Password & Security.
  • Enter your Apple ID password.
  • Tap on Account Recovery.
  • Tap Add Recovery Contact and follow the prompts.

You can also run through these steps on a Mac:

  • Open System Preferences.
  • Click Apple ID.
  • Select Password & Security.
  • Beside Account Recovery, click Manage.
  • Click on + and follow the prompts.

Add a Legacy Contact

While you’re setting this up, you should also add a Legacy Contact, which will be someone who can recover your account and access your data if you die. Your Legacy Contact will just need a copy of your death certificate to get access to your account.

  • On a Mac, open System Preferences.
  • Beside Legacy Contact, click on Manage.

Answer security questions

When setting up a new iPad, iPhone or Mac, or when creating an Apple ID , you may have been asked to answer some security questions: the name of the road where you grew up, perhaps, or the name of a favourite teacher.

You can use your security questions as a way to reset your password. These are the steps to follow:

  • Start by entering your date of birth.
  • Apple will then ask you two questions. Enter the correct answers and you’ll arrive on a Reset Password page.
  • Now enter your new password twice (so that Apple can confirm you’ve spelled it the same way each time). Your password needs to have 8 or more characters, upper- and lower-case letters, and at least one number. It also cannot contain the same character three times in a row (or any spaces), and you’re not allowed to reuse a password you’ve used in the past year.

How to reset forgotten Apple ID password: Reset password

What if you forget the answers to your security questions?

Remember that it’s not just the answers, but also the way you wrote them: watch out for misspellings or shortenings (Avenue becoming Ave, for instance). It has to be exactly the same as the way you answered during setup.

It’s possible to change the questions and/or answers by going to appleid.apple.com , but you’ll need to log in with your Apple ID and password. So that may not be useful for those of you reading this article.

Still, even if you’ve forgotten the answers to your security questions you should still be able to request that the link to change the password for your Apple ID is sent to the alternative email you registered to the account.

Send a password reset email

Rather than answering the security questions you can choose instead to have a password reset email sent to you. This will be sent to a second email address you have associated with your Apple ID.

Before you select this option, make sure you have access to that email account. Luckily you’ll get a hint as to which one Apple is using, because you’ll be shown part of the address.

  • From the Reset Password screen at iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid choose Get an email and hit Continue.
  • The email will arrive at the second email address associated with your account with the subject line ‘How to reset your Apple ID password’.
  • Click the ‘Reset now’ link in the email.
  • The email will come from [email protected]// and include a warning in case it wasn’t you who requested the change of password.

Two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication is an form of security that Apple has been pushing since the rollout of iOS 10 and macOS Sierra back in 2016. (Here’s how to set up two-factor authentication .)

Essentially, if you’ve set up two-factor authentication, as well as entering your password you will be required to enter a code Apple sends to your iPhone or Mac.

If you’ve set up two-factor authentication and you want to change your password, you’ll still need to go to appleid.apple.com and click ‘Forgotten your password?’

  • At the Apple ID page you’ll be asked to enter the email address (and characters to prove you aren’t a robot). Then you will be asked for the phone number associated with your two-factor authentication.
  • Once you’ve entered the correct number you’ll see a screen offering to let you reset your password from another device or from a trusted phone number. Obviously you need to make sure you have access to these.
  • If you choose to reset from another device you’ll receive an alert. In our case the alert arrived on the MacBook Pro we were using, and we were given a link to System Preferences > iCloud and the option to Reset Password.
  • If you choose to reset it from a trusted phone number you’ll see a warning that account recovery is required to reset your password from the internet. If you have access to a device running iOS 10 or later, or macOS Sierra or later, you will be able to use that to reset the password. If that’s the case you should cancel and choose the ‘reset it from another device’ option as per step 3. Otherwise, choose Start Account Recovery.
  • WARNING: It can take a few days or even longer to regain access to your account so we don’t recommend you use this step unless it’s a last resort! Apple will send a text message to you once your account is ready for recovery. You will then need to enter a verification code sent by Apple to regain access to your account.

How to reset forgotten Apple ID password: Two-factor authentication

Two-step verification

Two-step verification is an older security system that Apple introduced a few years ago after there was a lot of negative publicity about iCloud security. (Celebrities were having their accounts hacked and intimate photos leaked online.)

Apple users who were concerned about security at the time may have two-step verification set up for their Apple ID. If this applies to you, you would have been sent a 14-character Recovery Key that Apple advised you to print and keep in a safe place.

If you’re using two-step verification (and this may be the best you can do, because older devices don’t support two-factor authentication), every time you want to sign into iCloud you need to enter your Apple ID and password as well as a verification code that will be sent to one of your devices.

If you don’t have both a verification code and password you will be locked out of your account, and should this happen you have to use your 14-character Recovery Key to gain access again.

With two-step verification, password recovery depends on whether you know the Recovery Key. If you don’t, you won’t be able to recover your account. Even Apple is unable to reset your password if you don’t have this Recovery Key… so don’t lose it!

If you have this form of security and don’t know where your Recovery Key is, you can get a new one by going to your Apple ID account, signing in with your password and email address and choosing Replace Lost Key.

What if you forget your email address?

Along with your password, you will need to enter your Apple ID, which is usually an email address you associate with the account.

Perhaps it’s less likely to happen, but if you don’t often sign in for Apple services and products, you might forget which email address is tied to your Apple ID. Luckily, there’s a quick way to find out which address you need. You just need to find a device that is already signed into your Apple ID.

On an iPad or iPhone

  • Go to Settings and tap your name at the top of the page. If you’re logged in here you will see the email associated with your Apple ID under your name.
  • You may also see the email address in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive, or Settings > FaceTime.

On a Mac or PC

  • Go to System Settings and click your name card at the top. Again you should see your Apple ID email address if you’re logged in.
  • If you aren’t logged in here you may find the email by opening FaceTime, then clicking the FaceTime dropdown menu and selecting Settings. Similarly, you could try checking Mail, or Messages.
  • Another way to find your Apple ID is to open Music/iTunes and check for previous purchases. Find a purchase, right-click and choose Get Info then File. You may see the email address beside your name.

If you fail to find your Apple ID after trying those methods, you will need to visit the Apple ID page online at appleid.apple.com . Below the boxes for Apple ID and Password, click ‘Forgotten your password?’

Enter your first name, last name and email address. If you enter the wrong email address, you can try again with a different one until the email address is recognized. It doesn’t seem to be completely foolproof, however: we entered the email address we know is associated with our Apple ID and we were greeted with the No Apple ID Found message. Hopefully you’ll have more luck than we did.

Once you’ve changed your Apple ID password you will need to update it in the iCloud settings in any Apple devices you have.

Several options to reset your Apple ID password

If you don't have access to your Apple ID, your experience with your Apple devices is very limited, even if you've just bought one of the best iPhones or the best iPads . After all, without your password, you can't restore your earlier backup! It's vital that you remember your password but there are ways to reclaim it as you can see above.

If you're unlucky enough to forget and need to reset your Apple ID password, there are plenty of ways to get it back and sign in again.  Generally, one of these methods will work for the majority of cases.

However, if you've exhausted all these methods and still got nowhere, in my experience working at the Genius Bar, there are circumstances where longer account recovery processes are needed before you can gain access again.

To avoid this, it's worth keeping your Apple ID password stored somewhere safe and secure. After all, it's always better to be safe than sorry.

If you have an Apple device, your Apple ID is likely used for a lot of important things, like accessing your App Store purchases and iCloud content, locating a lost device, and more. That’s why it’s important to have a strong password that’s stored in a safe place, such as a password manager.

However, accidents happen, and you may wind up locked out of your Apple account because of a forgotten password or some other mishap. If you find yourself in this situation, don’t panic — here’s how to get back in.

Reset your Apple ID password from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac

If you’re lucky and are already logged in to an Apple device with your Apple ID, it’s relatively easy to reset your Apple ID password.

On an iPhone or iPad device:

  • Go to Settings , then tap on the button with your name and profile picture.
  • Go to Password & Security > Change Password .
  • You’ll be prompted to enter your passcode, and once you do, you can enter a new password for your Apple ID. (Note that this option won’t be available if you don’t have a passcode set up for your device.)

Image showing a screen that reads: Enter iPhone Passcode. This iPhone can be used to change your password because you are signed into iCloud and have a passcode enabled.

The process is very similar on a Mac.

  • Go to System Preferences > Apple ID > Password & Security .
  • Click Change Password and enter your computer’s password.

Reset your password with another Apple device

If you aren’t logged in to any Apple devices but have access to an Apple Store or a friend or family member with an iPhone or iPad, you can use the Apple Support app to reset your password.

  • Go to the App Store and download the app, either using the link above or by searching for “Apple Support” in the store.
  • Once you open the app, you should see a screen displaying details about the Apple device you’re using. (If you’re on the homepage with a list of devices instead, just select the device from the list.) Tap the Passwords and Security button.
  • Go to Reset Apple ID password > Get Started and select A different Apple ID .
  • Tap Continue and enter your Apple ID.

The next steps will depend on how your Apple account is configured and which devices you have connected to it. For example, Apple may send a text to your phone number with a code and then ask you to enter a passcode that you used on one of your Apple devices. If you’re able to complete those steps, you’ll be prompted to enter a new password. If you can’t, the app will likely direct you to the account recovery system, which we’ll cover below.

If you don’t have access to an Apple device

If you aren’t able to access another Apple device, you’ll have to go through the account recovery process. It’s not exactly ideal that Apple makes you go through this process if you don’t have access to one of its devices, but unfortunately, that’s the way it works.

Apple’s account recovery process takes time — “several days or longer,” according to a support document from the company. Apple says this is meant to give you time to cancel any malicious requests made by someone else who’s potentially trying to get into your account and to give it time to verify that it’s really you trying to reset your password by looking to see if any of your Apple devices are being used during that time frame.

You can start it either through the Apple Support app or on the web using the following instructions.

  • To begin, go to iforgot.apple.com and enter your Apple ID. It may also ask you to confirm your phone number.
  • Depending on your account settings, you’ll be shown a variety of options, all of which require having access to a logged-in device or an iPhone or iPad, such as tapping a notification on your iPhone or iPad or using the Apple Support app.
  • If none of them work for you, click the Can’t use any of these options? link. From there, you’ll be able to start the account recovery process.
  • You may have to provide a verification number sent to you via text or email. (If you only have access to the latter, you’ll also likely be asked to enter a phone number in case Apple tries to contact you.) After you do so, the wait will begin.

Screenshot of a page that says: Thank you. We’ll send you an update soon. We are evaluating your information to determine when you will be able to reset your password. By this time tomorrow, we’ll contact you at your email address to let you know when your wait time will be complete. Apple Support can’t help you shorten the wait time.

In its account recovery support document , Apple says there are a variety of ways it may try to speed up the account recovery process, including asking you to provide details about the credit card you have on file and / or having you provide a code emailed to your main address. (At several points, it stresses that contacting Apple Support is not one of the ways to speed up the process.)

After the wait period is over, you’ll receive a text or phone call with instructions on how to recover your account.

What to Know

  • Go to Apple's IForgotAppleID website . Enter the username and use a recovery email or answer security questions to reset your password.
  • If you use two-factor authentication, a Reset Password message appears on your trusted device. Follow the prompts to reset the password.
  • On a Mac, sign in to iTunes and click Forgot Apple ID or Password . Then follow the prompts to reset your Apple ID password.

This article explains how to reset your Apple ID password if you've forgotten it.

How to Reset Your Apple ID Password on the Web

If you've tried all the passwords you think might be correct and you still can't log in, you need to reset your Apple ID password. Here's how to do that using Apple's website (if you have two-factor authentication set up on your Apple ID , skip these instructions and go to the next section):

In your browser, go to  iforgot.apple.com .

Enter your Apple ID username, then click Continue .

There are two ways to reset your password: using the recovery email address you have on file in your account or answering your security questions. Make your choice and click Continue .

If you chose to Get an email , check the email account shown on the screen, then enter the verification code from the email and click Continue . Now skip to step 7.

If you chose to Answer security questions , begin by entering your birthday, then answer two of your security questions and click Continue .

Enter your new Apple ID password. The password must be 8 or more characters, include upper and lowercase letters, and have at least one number. The Strength indicator shows how secure the password you choose is.

When you're happy with your new password, click Reset Password to make the change.

Resetting Your Apple ID Password with Two-Factor Authentication

Resetting your Apple ID password requires more steps if you're using two-factor authentication to provide an additional layer of security. In that case:

Follow the first two steps in the instructions above.

Next, confirm your trusted phone number. Enter the number and click Continue .

You'll get a screen that tells you to check your trusted devices.

On one of your trusted devices, a Reset Password pop-up window appears. Click or tap Allow .

Enter the device's passcode.

Then enter your new Apple ID password, enter it a second time for verification and tap Next to change your password.

How to Reset Your Apple ID Password in iTunes on a Mac

If you use a Mac and prefer this approach, you can also reset your Apple ID password via iTunes. Here's how:

Begin by launching iTunes on your computer.

Click the  Account  menu.

Click Sign In .

In the pop-up window, click Forgot Apple ID or Password? (it's a small link just below the password field).

In the next pop-window, enter your Apple ID .

Another pop-up window will ask you to enter the password you use for your computer user account. This is the password you use to log on to the computer.

Enter your new password, enter it a second time for verification, and then click Continue .

If you have dual-factor authentication enabled, you'll need to enter your trusted phone number.

Choose Use a trusted phone number or Use another device. Then follow the steps above on your trusted device to reset your password.

You can use this process in the iCloud System Preferences panel, too. To do that, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud  > Account Details > Forgot Password?

How to Set an Account Recovery Contact

Users of iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterrey (12.0) have another option for resetting their iCloud password: account recovery contacts. With this feature, you'll designate a trusted person who can provide a recovery key once you've answered a few questions to Apple to verify your identity. You should set this feature up in advance, since you won't be able to access these settings without your iCloud account.

To designate an account recovery contact on your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > [your name] > Password and Security > Account Recovery and tap Add Recovery Contact . Then, follow the instructions to invite someone to be your ACR. They'll have to agree to the request before they'll come up during the password-reset process.

On a Mac, go to System Preferences > Apple ID > Password & Security > Account Recovery and select Add Recovery Contact . The same directions apply here as on an iPhone. In either case, you must have two-factor authorization active to designate a recovery contact.

However you chose to reset your password, with all the steps completed, you should be able to log into your account again. Try logging in to the iTunes Store or another Apple service with the new password to make sure it works. If it doesn't, go through this process again and make sure you keep track of your new password.

Why Your Apple ID Is so Important

Because your Apple ID is used so for many of Apple's important services, forgetting your Apple ID password can create a lot of problems. Without being able to log into your Apple ID, you may not be able to use iMessage or FaceTime, Apple Music , or the iTunes Store, and you won't be able to make changes to your iTunes account .

Most people use the same Apple ID for all their Apple services (technically you can use one Apple ID for things like FaceTime and iMessage and another for the iTunes Store, but most people don't do that). That makes forgetting your password a particularly serious problem.

How to reset your Apple password on iPhone or web

There's nothing more annoying than getting locked out of your account, especially when you’re trying to download a new app or get something done. And having our Apple password secure can often seem more important than just about anything else due to the highly connected nature of the Apple ecosystem. From the best iPhones to your laptop computer, if it comes from Apple it is all connected. Here, we'll take you through the steps to fix your overarching Apple password, also known as an Apple ID password, but we also have guides on resetting your Mac password specifically, if that's what you really need.

How to reset your password using the Apple ID account page

If you ever forget the answers to your security questions, if you use two-factor authentication using your ios device, if you use two-factor authentication using the apple id account page, how to reset your apple password using account recovery, what you need.

Desktop or laptop computer (optional)

Fortunately, resetting your Apple ID password can be done in several different ways. We’ll show you the ways to do it so you can put this inconvenience aside and move on with your day quickly.

One way to reset your password is by logging onto the Apple ID account page and following these steps.

Step 1: To start, go to appleid.apple.com and click Forgot Apple ID or Password in the center of the page. Note: Your password may automatically pre-fill the sign-in screen in a drop-down menu, especially if you checked the Remember Me box, so look for it first and click to see if it works

Step 2: You’ll be taken to a page where you enter your Apple ID (in most cases, it’s the primary email address for your Apple account), and then to a new page where you’ll enter your name and the email address associated with the account. Click Continue , then select I need to reset my password .

Note : If you have two-factor authentication set up for your account, your screen will look different, and you’ll be asked to confirm your phone number (more on that later).

  • Here’s how iOS 18 is going to overhaul your iPhone’s email app
  • Be careful with your iPhone! Repairing it just got more expensive
  • Apple just admitted defeat to Android phones

Step 3: You’ll now be able to choose how you want to reset your password, whether it be through email or by answering a set of security questions. Which option you choose is based on your personal preference.

Step 4: Choosing the email method prompts Apple to send instructions to the primary email address you used to begin this process, or a rescue email if you decided to make one. You’ll know the email has been sent when you see the Email has been sent page with a large, green checkmark. If you can’t find the email, be sure to check your Spam, Junk , and Trash folders, or repeat the steps above to have the email sent again. Going with the security questions requires you to confirm your birthday and answer specific questions before you’re able to create a new password.

If you forgot your password, answering security questions is one of the quickest ways to get back into your account to make changes. After all, only you — or someone who knows you really well — would know the answers to questions like “Who was your favorite teacher?” But what if you forgot the answers to your own security questions? Thankfully, in the event you do, changing them is also a simple process (although you will need access to your password to change them). Here’s how.

Step 1: Go to iforgot.apple.com and enter your Apple ID.

Step 2: Select I need to reset my security questions and click Continue .

Step 3: Enter your password, then click Continue .

Step 4: Choose three questions from the drop-down menus, and provide the appropriate answers. That’s it!

If you set up and enabled two-factor authentication — which is different from two-step verification — resetting your password will be even easier, as you’ll be able to reset your password directly from a trusted iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or the Apple ID account page. If you’re unsure if you have any trusted devices, don’t be; when you set up two-factor authentication, you created trusted devices. All iOS devices will also need to have a passcode enabled.

Step 1: Go to Settings > [your name] > Password & Security

Step 2: Tap Change Password at the top.

Step 3: You will be asked to enter your passcode. Once done, enter your new password.

You can also use this method by logging onto the Apple ID account page and following these four steps.

Step 1: Go to iforgot.apple.com and enter the trusted phone number you submitted when you set up two-factor authentication.

Step 2: Click Continue to send a notification to a trusted iPhone, iPad, or iPod.

Step 3: When you receive the notification on your iOS device, tap Allow .

Step 4: Follow the provided steps, enter your passcode, and reset your password.

Note : If you no longer have access to a trusted device and can’t set up a new one, the process for changing your password gets a tad more complex. Getting around two-factor authentication is possible, but it is not an easy process. It could take several days to verify before you can change your password.

If your iOS device is located in another room, you shouldn’t run into trouble requesting your password by using Account Recovery . This method works for a lost or stolen phone. Recovering your account will protect it from anyone else accessing it and potentially impersonating you or using your data. Depending on the amount of information you provide to prove you’re really you, the time it takes for this could be lengthy.

Step 1: As you’re completing the steps to reset your password via iForgot or iOS, you will likely see an option to Request Account Recovery . Select it.

Step 2: Type in a phone number that Apple can reach you at when your account is ready to access. Apple will send a verification code to confirm that phone number, so be sure to enter that code to verify your personal information. After you’ve finished that, Apple will send a confirmation on your account recovery request and will let you know to stand by for a call or text regarding your account.

Step 3: This part requires a bit of waiting; it’s tough to estimate exactly when you’ll receive contact, but Apple will call or text you when your account is ready.

Step 4: Head to iforgot.apple.com . Once there, type your Apple ID and phone number that you used during step two into the system.

Step 5: At that point, you’ll receive another call or text with a specific Account Recovery code. Head back to the iForgot website and type that code in.

Step 6: Click Continue to finish resetting your password. We also recommend signing in to your account and confirming your trusted phone number to bolster your account’s security.

Whatever way you choose to reset your Apple password, it’s important that you log in to your account shortly after using your new password. From there, you can check within your Settings menu that the password is updated on all of your devices (so you don’t stay locked out of them for too long). By double-checking everything, you ensure that you’ll have consistent access to your Apple account.

Imagine paying a minimum of $999 for a new iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, only to discover that it can’t run the full iOS 18 experience in less than two years. It might sound dystopian, especially for a product known for its long shelf life that's largely the result of an industry-leading software update policy at Apple.

Yet, it seems that nightmarish surprise will be here in just over a week. Bloomberg recently reported on some crucial AI-driven features coming to iOS 18, with Siri being one of the main recipients of all that innovation. But iPhone users might have to pay a pretty price for it all.

It seems the long-overdue Siri overhaul will finally arrive at WWDC in just over a week from now, and the digital assistant will embrace AI trickery in all its forms. According to Bloomberg, Apple’s planned upgrades for Siri will deeply integrate with on-device functions at the OS level and with the installed apps, too.

“The new system will allow Siri to take command of all the features within apps for the first time,” the report says. The most notable capability is that Siri will only require voice prompts to interact with apps, thanks to a major change in the AI architecture powering it and putting large language models in command, just the way Gemini or ChatGPT draw their own skills from such models.

Even with the more recent release of the Apple iPhone 15, the iPhone 14 still makes a great option for a new phone. It spent a long time among the best phones on the market, and now that it’s a generation old it even offers some great savings. Some of the best iPhone deals available are on the iPhone 14, in fact, and while most of the models are refurbished, refurbished iPhone deals typically come backed by a warranty and a good return window. With all of the iPhone 14 deals out there it can be a little difficult to shop, so we’ve rounded them all up below for some convenience. With the Apple iPhone 14 you’re getting what is still one of the most popular smartphones on the market. This is the iPhone 14 model that’s meant for everyone. How to Reset Your Apple ID Password: 5 Simple Ways

Quick links.

  • Reset Your Apple ID on a Trusted Device
  • Reset Your Apple ID Password Through the iForgot Website
  • Reset Your Apple ID Password on a New Device
  • Reset Your Apple ID Password Using Someone Else's Device
  • Reset Your Apple ID Password Using a Recovery Contact
  • The easiest way to reset your Apple ID is using your trusted Apple devices.
  • In case you don't have access to a trusted Apple device, you can use the iForgot website or Apple's Support app on a borrowed device.

Forgetting your Apple ID means getting locked out of your Apple devices and services like Apple Music, iCloud, App Store, and more. But don't panic if you forgot yours since resetting your Apple ID password is fairly simple in most cases.

1. Reset Your Apple ID on a Trusted Device

With two-factor authentication (2FA) , you can only access your account through devices you trust and on the web.

When you sign in to a new device for the first time, you'll need your password and a six-digit verification code shown on your other devices or sent to your phone number. You won't need that verification code again unless you sign out, erase the device, or change your password.

Your only other option is to sign in using Apple Passkeys, which requires a trusted iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later.

If you have 2FA enabled, you can reset your Apple ID or iCloud password from any trusted device.

On an iPhone or iPad

Head to the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap [Your Name] > Sign-In & Security , then Change Password .

Next, type in the passcode you use to unlock your device.

On the Change Password screen that appears, enter a new password in both fields and tap Change . Now, you can enter this new Apple ID password on all your other devices.

In macOS, open the Apple menu and go to System Settings , then click [Your Name] .

Click Sign-In & Security , then click Change Password next to Password . You'll be prompted to enter your Mac's admin password. Once you do, click Allow .

From the dialog box that appears, enter your new password and type it again in the Verify field. Then, click Change . Your other devices will ask you to enter the new password when you next use them.

2. Reset Your Apple ID Password Through the iForgot Website

Another way to reset your Apple ID password is through Apple's iForgot website.

Here's what you need to do to reset your Apple ID's password through the iForgot website on your iPhone or iPad:

  • Head to Apple's iForgot website .
  • Tap Reset Password .
  • Now, tap the Reset My Password button.
  • Enter your iPhone or iPad passcode to authenticate.
  • Simply enter your new password, retype it, and hit Continue . Close

The above steps only apply if you're using a trusted iPhone or iPad. Otherwise, the iForgot website will prompt you to enter your trusted phone number instead of the passcode.

On a Mac, PC, or Android Device

Visit Apple's iForgot website using a web browser and click Reset Password . Enter your Apple ID and click Continue .

You'll see a glimpse of the phone number associated with your Apple ID (the numbers are hidden, and only the last two digits are shown). Enter the complete phone number to verify and click Continue .

As with a 2FA login, a dialog box appears on your trusted devices. A list of your Apple devices also appears on the website. Click or tap Allow in the Reset Password message.

Enter your device passcode or macOS admin password and click Continue . Enter a new password, re-enter it in the Verify field, and tap Next or click Change . That's it! You've successfully changed your Apple ID password.

3. Reset Your Apple ID Password on a New Device

You can also reset your Apple ID password using a new iPhone or iPad by following the steps below:

  • If you're just setting up your new iPhone or iPad, simply tap Forgot password or don't have an Apple ID? during setup. Otherwise, open the Settings app.
  • Tap Sign in to your iPhone and then tap Sign in Manually .
  • When prompted to enter the email or phone number linked with your Apple ID, tap Forgot password or don't have an Apple ID? . Then, tap Forgot Password or Apple ID .
  • Enter the email address or phone number associated with your Apple ID. Now, confirm your phone number.
  • Tap Send code to [Your Number] . Enter the verification code you receive followed by the 28-character recovery key—if you've enabled it—and tap Next .
  • Finally, type in a new Apple ID password and confirm it. Close

Similarly, if you're signing in to your Apple ID on a new Mac during setup, click Forgot Apple ID or password? .

Type the email address or phone number associated with your Apple ID, then enter your trusted phone number, followed by the 28-character recovery key.

If you're already past the setup stage, go to System Settings and click Sign in with your Apple ID . Click Forgot Apple ID or Password and follow the same instructions as above to reset your Apple account's password.

4. Reset Your Apple ID Password Using Someone Else's Device

If you can't access any of your devices, you can reset your Apple ID password using a friend or family member's iPhone or iPad from the iForgot website or the Apple Support app.

Ask the device owner to download the Apple Support app first. Under Support Tools , tap Reset Password . Now, tap Help Someone Else .

Enter the Apple ID you need to reset the password for, then tap Next and follow the on-screen instructions until you receive the confirmation.

5. Reset Your Apple ID Password Using a Recovery Contact

If you're locked out of your Apple ID account and don't have access to your other Apple devices or your trusted phone number, all hope isn't lost yet. As long as you have an account recovery contact set up , they can help you gain access to your account back within minutes.

Here's what you need to do on your device to get to the point where your recovery contact can assist you:

  • Go to Apple's iForgot website in a web browser.
  • Tap Reset My Password and enter your email address or phone number linked to your Apple ID. If you don't have access to your device and are using a borrowed device, tap Help Someone Else instead.
  • Tap Cannot access your Apple devices when prompted to use your other Apple devices to reset your Apple ID password.
  • Tap Cannot use this number when prompted to use your trusted phone number.
  • Tap Get help now on the next screen. Close

You'll now need to reach out to your recovery contact and ask them to get a recovery code.

If they're on an iPhone or iPad, they need to head to Settings > [Apple ID Name] > Sign-In & Security > Account Recovery . Then, choose your name under the Account Recovery For heading and tap Get Recovery Code .

If they use a Mac, they need to click the Apple logo in the menu bar and head to System Settings > [Apple ID Name] > Sign-In & Security > Account Recovery . Then, click Details next to your name under Account Recovery For and click Get Recovery Code .

Once your contact follows the instructions and gets the six-digit recovery code, tap I have a recovery code and enter it on the next screen.

You may be prompted to enter the passcode of your other devices once you enter the recovery code. After that, enter your new password twice and tap Continue .

If you don't have access to the email address or phone number linked to your Apple ID and don't have a recovery account or contact set up, you're unlikely to get access to your account again. Unfortunately, your only option is to create a new Apple ID in such cases.

What Is iforgot.apple.com Phishing Scam?

What Is iforgot apple com Phishing Scam

The “iforgot.apple.com” phishing scam is a deceptive tactic where cybercriminals mimic Apple’s password reset page to steal user credentials. This email isn’t affiliated with the official Apple company.

Cyber tricksters mass distribute these emails, posing as Apple ID Support and making misleading statements about account activities. Their primary goal? To lure the recipient into clicking a link or button, which might redirect to a phishing site, initiate a malicious download, or cause other harm.

These deceptive emails often alarm users with claims like their Apple ID being locked, disabled, or accessed from a new device, urging them to click a link for verification. If you got such an email, immediately change your Apple ID password and enable two-factor authentication for added security.

Is iforgot.apple.com an Official Apple Email Address?

No, “iforgot.apple.com” is not an official Apple email address. It’s actually the official Apple website for users to reset or recover their Apple ID password. While the website is legit, the hidden link in the email address is not. That link isn’t directed to Apple’s official servers.

Moreover, if an Apple ID gets locked or disabled, you will receive a notification upon attempting to log in, not via email. If you receive an email claiming to be from iforgot.apple.com, scrutinize its content, verify its authenticity, and avoid clicking any links unless you’re certain of the email’s legitimacy.

To determine if it’s a phishing email:

  • Check the sender’s email to ensure it’s coming from Apple’s domain.

Remember: genuine Apple emails typically start with “donotreply.”

  • Place your cursor over the iforgot.apple.com link without clicking it.
  • Confirm the link directs to iforgot.apple.com and not some other third-party website.

If in doubt, directly visit the Apple website or contact Apple Support to verify any suspicious communications.

What Exactly Does the iforgot.apple.com Scam Email Say?

The content of the iforgot.apple.com phishing scam email can vary, but it typically follows a pattern designed to alarm or concern the recipient. Common messages include:

  • 🚨 Notification of Unusual Activity : A message stating your Apple ID was used to sign in on a new browser.
  • 🌍 Specific Details : Mention of a date, IP address, and a seemingly random country, frequently citing places like Albania or Russia.
  • ⚠️ Urgent Warning : A message indicating, “Your Apple ID has been temporarily disabled for security reasons. When you see these alerts, you can go to iforgot.apple.com.”
  • 🔗 Deceptive Links : A clickable link that appears to lead to iforgot.apple.com.
  • ⏳ Sense of Urgency : A strong recommendation to take action within the next 24 hours to resolve the issue.

These emails often contain official-looking Apple logos, formatting, and language to appear legitimate. However, they’ll usually have subtle inconsistencies or errors. Always be cautious and verify any unexpected or suspicious Apple-related communications directly with Apple Support.

If your Apple ID is locked or disabled, you’ll receive a pop-up notification upon login. You won’t be informed through an email.

How iforgot.apple.com Phishing Scam Works?

Fraudsters send emails suggesting urgent action is needed for your Apple account. This could be due to:

  • Unusual login from a different browser, region, or device
  • Account facing restrictions, limitations, or security blocks
  • A prompt for password change or account re-verification

You are guided to sign in with your Apple IDs on a counterfeit site. Clicking the link takes you to a deceptive site mimicking Apple’s login page. Here, you’re prompted for your Apple ID and password, which the scammers capture.

If successful, these cyber thieves can access the App Store for purchases, manage iMessages, access iCloud files, and more.

What Can the iforgot.apple.com Scam Email Do to You?

The iforgot.apple.com phishing scam email is more than just a deceptive message; it’s a gateway for cybercriminals to exploit unsuspecting users.

Here’s what the iforgot.apple.com phishing scam email can do to you:

  • 🕵️ Steal Personal Information : Scammers can capture your login credentials by tricking you into entering your Apple ID and password on a fake website.
  • 💸 Unauthorized Purchases : With access to your Apple ID, cybercriminals can make unauthorized purchases on the App Store or other Apple services.
  • 📩 Access to iMessages : They can read, send, or delete your messages, potentially harming personal or professional relationships.
  • ☁️ iCloud Breach : Scammers can access your iCloud, potentially retrieving personal photos, documents, and other sensitive data.
  • 🔄 Account Manipulation : They can change account settings, add new devices, or even lock you out of your own account.
  • 📤 Spread the Scam : They might send scam emails to your contacts using your account, further propagating the phishing attempt.

Always approach such emails with caution. If in doubt, contact Apple Support directly and never click suspicious links or provide personal information.

To much scams…please READ!

So whenever I use this app/ Safari it get these trackers and scammers to get my location and this is making me nervous. I installed ad blocker I think it’s called and I blocked some trackers which made me feel better. Every time you search something you usually get a scam or tracker. I do not like when people track me down. I rarely use this app because of the scams and risks. I think it is an OK app in general because it’s the people making these small BAD websites. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because it could use work but it is pretty much like google. I use google way more because I feel like it is much safer than safari. I could be wrong… Safari could use some work with all these BAD websites. Can you block these bad websites? I would love to block these websites cause they are scary. Also watch out for nine anime/ 9anime websites… I searched up 9anime on safari and clicked a link. It looked safe but then these inappropriate pop ups kept coming. I immediately got off. I checked my ‘ How much trackers we have prevented’ or whatever it’s called it said that it had prevented 14 trackers from getting my IP address. This was good and bad news. I’m glad that safari and google can prevent these trackers but it is bad because this is dangerous. BE CAREFUL ON SAFARI!!!

Your Underrated Prince, Safari

In my humble opinion, Safari is the underrated king among multiple web browsers on the market. I was a PC devotee from ‘95 to ‘16, since then, it’s been all Tim Cook 🍎 all the time. My only regret is not purchasing a smartphone back in ‘07 from Steve Jobs. Presently, I own an iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold (2016), iPad Mini (2016), iPad Pro (2019) & MacBook (2018) in rose gold with matching Beats By Dre headphones. All four are set up with Safari, not Chrome, TOR, Brave, Edge, or DDGo. I love the ability to quickly save favorites, add to reading list & share content to other platforms. My favorites are alphabetized for quick reference & the reading list keeps all articles & pages in chronological order for quick recall. Also, I learned Safari quickly because it’s extremely user friendly. The browser helped my navigation of Apple when switching from PC. I’ll admit, learning MacBook isn’t easy, but, Safari keeps things familiar for me on the desktop. When lost, just go back to Safari & start over. It’s surprising no one in tech media mentions Safari more often as a go to source for navigating the internet. Chrome is the reigning king of, Land Of Browsers, without an heir apparent. I nominate Safari as the prince with future king potential. Citizens of Land Of Browsers don’t like their chrome-plated dirty laundry aired, sold or tracked.
I have been using this for years and had no problems with it. I ran over my phone with my lawn mower and was without my phone for over a year due to having to fight with the insurance company. However when I finally got a lawyer involved the insurance company finally replaced it for me. I DID not lose anything and I mean anything. I like the cards better because they are easier to clear out. You have to back everything up to your cloud every day or every other day so that you don’t have to worry about losing anything. As I always make sure that I back everything up just in case. It is not apples fault if you lose your any of your information it is yours for not backing up your phone to your cloud. So most of the people who write bad reviews either don’t back up or they just don’t or they just don’t care. Apple doesn’t charge a lot to add more space to your cloud so there is no reason why you can’t back you things. This is better than anything that google has. By far. If you want your information used by third parties then use google’s and quit complaining. You can change your browser in safari so that you don’t have to use them get with it you bad reviews and learn how to use safari.

How to reset the Safari browser on your iPhone in 2 different ways

  • You can reset Safari on an iPhone by clearing cookies and erasing your browsing history.
  • There are two ways to reset your Safari data: through the Safari app itself, and through the Settings app.
  • Both methods will let your clear both your browsing history and cookies.

If you're looking to clear your Safari data, simply removing your Frequently Visited sites isn't going to address privacy concerns if you have cookies stored, for instance.

Fortunately, it's easy to reset all your browsing history and settings. Here are two ways to do it, one directly through Safari, and the other through your iPhone's Settings.

How to reset Safari on iPhone through the browser

1. At the bottom of an open Safari page, tap the book icon .

2. At the top of the menu that opens, tap the clock icon to open your history.

3. Tap Clear at the bottom of the page. A prompt menu will open to warn that you'll clear your history, cookies, and other data over a selected time period. Tap All time to reset your browser.

How to reset Safari on iPhone through the Settings app

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

2. Search for or scroll down to Safari and open it.

3. Tap Clear History and Website Data in blue about halfway down the page.

4. A prompt menu will pop up. Tap Clear History and Data and wait a few moments while the iPhone processes your request. Once it does, all your data will have been cleared.

Hey chipmcerlane,

It sounds like you're looking to get Safari back on your Mac. We can understand wanting to look into that further. We want to help.

It looks like you're coming from the article: Update or reinstall Safari for your computer

  • "If you deleted Safari and don't have a backup, reinstall macOS to put Safari back in your Applications folder. Reinstalling macOS doesn't remove data from your computer. Before reinstalling, you might want to use Spotlight to search for Safari. If you find it, but it's no longer in your Dock, just drag it to the Dock to add it back."

Those would be the best steps to take to resolve the issue. You can find the steps fro reinstalling macOS here: How to reinstall macOS

What do you mean when you say you "lost" Safari? What happened? Safari is installed as part of the computer's operating system and it cannot be removed, so its icon can still be found in the Applications folder. Does it not open or what?
