• There is more than beaches, explore the inner lands of Bali too! Ubud is an amazing jungle town that cannot be missed on any Bali honeymoon itinerary. Sidemen and Munduk are great regions to escape the crowds.
• Ideally do not plan your Nusa Penida or Gili Islands visit just before your flight back home. Sometimes the weather can result in ferry cancellations , meaning you might miss your flight.

The walk starts close to the town of Ubud (see Google Maps link below). At the end of the ridge you will find some bamboo huts selling refreshing juice and coconuts.

Instead of walking back, you could opt to continue walking straight for another 25 minutes through a local Balinese village until you reach Jungle Fish, a luxury infinity-pool overlooking the jungle.

It's one of Bali's most popular and iconic art performances and takes place for an hour every day during sunset (from 6PM to 7PM). On Uluwatu cliff overlooking the Indian ocean, this sauna offers cold baths, steam rooms, two sauna's and large swimming pools. You don’t need to move from hotel to hotel to see most of Bali. A great way to explore the island without a lot of hassle is by booking one of the many Bali day trips . They normally include pick-up and drop off at your hotel.

Romantic Dining in Bali

In most countries, the Michelin Guide sets the record straight. It decides which restaurants deserve their famous stars. Unfortunately, they not operate in Bali or Indonesia. We believe they should! Bali offers world-class fine dining experiences that can compete with some of the finest Michelin-starred restaurants out there.

Most romantic fine dining restaurants can be found in Ubud and Seminyak . We’ve listed a few below. In Ubud, you can even find some options for romantic private dining surrounded by candlelights in a secluded location overlooking the jungle. The perfect dining experience for couples on their honeymoon!

While Canggu and Uluwatu are not offering the same level of fine dining as Ubud or Seminyak, they offer a wide variety of healthy food and varied international dining options – likely to serve the health-conscious surfers staying in these places. Canggu is where you will likely be served the most “Instagram-worthy” plates of beautifully presented dishes.

Don’t just stick to fancy food! You might like to splurge a little on your honeymoon. But don’t forget to try out the excellent local Balinese and Indonesian dishes . Bali is known for its pork dishes, including Sate Babi (grilled pork skewers) and Babi Guling (spicy dish made of suckling pig). Ayam Betutu is a delicious Balinese meal consisting of chicken and rice. Anywhere across Bali you will find Warungs , local family restaurants serving a wide variety of Indonesian dishes. Don’t know what to choose? Ask for Nasi Campur , a bowl of white rice surrounded by samples of the best dishes they have on offer.

The most spectacular fine dining experience you will find in Bali, in a real natural cave! We've been at The Cave and loved it, but its one of the more fancy and expensive fine dining experiences in Bali. You will pay a lot more here than in some of the other fine dining restaurants . Dining in a cave is a very spectacular experience though, and we believe it might be worth splurging on this if you love to experience something very unique.

The Cave is located in an actual natural underground cavern that was only discovered a couple of years ago. They turned the space into a circular restaurant with around 10 tables for two people. This means capacity is very limited, book in advance! As we arrived early, before the start of the dinner the waiters suggested us to explore a bit of the cave beyond the main chamber.

Seven or ten courses will be served (we opted for seven), and between courses they will dim the lights and project a light show on the walls of the cave. The menu is designed by chef Ryan Clift, who worked with famous chefs like Peter Gordon and Emmanuel Renaut. We believe the food was very good and original, but the most memorable thing definitely is the setting in which it is served.

7-Course Set Menu: Roughly 105$ pp (200$ with wine/cocktail pairing).

Sangsaka is a modern Indonesian restaurant offering one of the best tasting menus we have had in Bali, as well as à la carte options. Don't get confused with their website, it does not list the tasting menu but it does exist! We have added the 7-course menu from when we visited below, but the latest online reviews indicate that the menu is now 8 courses.

What we love about Sangsaka is the cozy ambiance (it is a small restaurant), personal attention and unique Indonesian-inspired dishes with a modern twist. Our favorites were the tuna with avocado and the dragonfruit dessert with elderflower. When we were visiting most of the guests were other couples, which is understandable considering the cozy and romantic vibe. It is a bit away from the main tourist area, so if you are staying near the beach in Seminyak we would suggest taking a 5-10 minute taxi ride to get there.

Tasting Menu: roughly 50$ pp.

The restaurant offers both a-la-carte and tasting menus. Either are of great quality, but we would recommend trying one of their tasting menus, as they are extremely good value. You can choose your favorite: The Garden (vegetarian), The Pastures (meat), The Sea (fish and seafood) or Plant-Based (vegan) set menu. All of them offer 5 courses. You probably can't go wrong with either of these, but we really loved the seafood one.

The dishes are classic and of high quality. The only critique we could think of is that the food lost a bit of its connection with Bali and Indonesia, as its more inspired by Japanese and Italian cuisine.

5 Course Menu: roughly 40$ (60$ with wine or cocktail pairing).

The Cost of a Bali Honeymoon

A Bali honeymoon can be expensive, especially when frequenting fine dining restaurants, fancy clubs and the best honeymoon suites. However, a Bali honeymoon is possible on almost any budget. No matter what level of luxury you and your partner prefer, you will be guaranteed to get amazing value for money in Bali. We said it before, but luxurious hotels and restaurants cost a fraction of what they cost in most other countries in the world.

A reasonable budget without going overboard would be around 300USD per night, including food, accomodation and activities. This does require some conscious choices. If you would like to experience the best hotels in Bali, you will likely spend more than that on just accomodation. Some hotels, like the Bulgari or Four Seasons, offer their best honeymoon suites at rates well beyond 1000USD per night. Beach Clubs and nightlife can get expensive too - often expecting a minimum spend for their best tables or sunbeds. Don’t let that scare you however: you can really have a honeymoon in Bali on any budget. There are couples who manage to get by with less than 100USD per night!

Some tips to keep the budget within reason:

• Ubud, Seminyak, Uluwatu and Canggu are known to be more expensive regions, while Nusa Penida, Amed and Lovina are known to be cheaper regions . Combining a luxurious location with a more affordable region might be an option.
• Fine dining with your partner is amazing. But Bali has amazing street food at extremely low prices. Give it a try!
• Especially in Canggu and Seminyak: the beachfront hotels are expensive. Look a little further inland . You can still get the beach experience by visiting a beach club for a day!

Indonesia beyond Bali

As we lived in Bali for many years, we had the opportunity to explore many corners of Indonesia. Olivia is originally from North Sumatra , a region famous for orangutans and one the largest volcanic lake in the world. Unfortunately, this region is a bit far from Bali (it requires 2 flights to get there!). However, there are many great regions closer to Bali that we love to recommend for a honeymoon in Indonesia.

Be aware that Bali is very luxurious and easy to travel compared to the rest of Indonesia. If you plan to enjoy fine dining and splurge on 5-star luxurious hotels , we would recommend staying in Bali.

But if you are an adventurous couple… Indonesia is a beautiful large and diverse archipelago with over 17.000 islands. Some great destinations can be reached by ferry from Bali, while other destinations will require a domestic flight or even multiple flights. Below we list our favorite regions adventurous couples should consider when visiting Indonesia.

• Visit the neighbouring island of Lombok for surf (Kuta), hiking (Rinjani) or party and diving ( Gili Islands ). Take the ferry from Padangbai or take a 30 minute flight from Bali to Praia.
• Between Bali and Lombok you will find the three Nusa Islands , of which Nusa Penida is the largest and we believe the most interesting. It offers iconic cliffs and beaches to explore. Nusa Lebongan and Nusa Ceningan island are getting more popular too, but are much smaller and don’t offer as stunning landscapes.
• Climb the Iljen and Bromo volcanoes in East Java. Reachable by short ferry from Gilimanuk in west Bali, or by direct plane from Bali to Surabaya.
• Explore the cultural heart of Java and visit the world’s largest temple Borobodur in Yogjakarta . Direct flights from Bali to Yogyakarta are available.
• Say hi to komodo dragons and dive with manta rays around Flores and the Komodo Islands . Take a direct flight to Labuan Bajo on Flores Island. From there you can board a multi-day boat trip to the Komodo Islands, or stay overnight and join any of the day trips to Komodo.
• See orang-utans in Bukit Lawang and discover Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the world, in North Sumatra . We love this region (Olivia grew up here!). Not many direct flights from Bali to Medan are available, most options will require a transit in Jakarta. Medan is easy to reach with direct flights from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur too.
• Explore the underwater world in the world-famous Raja Ampat in West Papua. This is said to be one of the world’s best dive sights - but it is really hard to get here! It will involve multiple flights and a ferry.
• Go off the beaten path and discover the beauty of Sumba Island - great for surf and pristine beaches. Direct flights to Tambolaka are available. Oddly, the world’s most luxurious resort, the Nihi Sumba, can be found on this island.
• Indonesia’s capital Jakarta is not known as a honeymoon destination. However, many people enter the country here, and there is a lot of history to see, food to enjoy and some luxury hotels to stay at. In addition, it could be a starting point for discovering Java island by train.
• Bandung is one of the nicer cities in Indonesia. It is very green, nestled against the West Java mountains. Worth visiting if you plan to travel overland from Java to Bali.
• The island of Wakatobi is a luxurious dive destination near Sulawesi. Guests who stay at the Wakatobi Resort can hop on the complimentary private jet(!) from Bali to fly to the island.

From world class sunsets and beautiful beaches to lush jungles and ancient temples, Bali is an idyllic place for a couples trip. Add in some of the world’s most luxurious hotels and spas, and you’ve got yourself a dreamy vacation oozing with romance!

In this 10 days in Bali itinerary, I’ll share everything you need to know about planning a trip to Bali and a detailed itinerary for your luxurious getaway.

Here’s the perfect 10 Day Bali Itinerary for couples!

While Bali is sometimes confused as being a country itself, it’s actually one of many islands in Indonesia. Because of its unique charm, magnificent landscapes, fascinating culture and warm hospitality (among so many other things!), Bali has become Indonesia’s most famous and visited island.

Bali is an ideal destination for all types of couples whether you’re thrill-seekers, foodies, water-enthusiasts, spiritual-seekers, or romantics.

Are you an adventurous and active couple? Hike up one of Bali’s majestic volcanoes for sunrise! Do you love adventures under the water? Bali is home to world class diving and surfing! Or if you’re more of a relax on the beach type… Bali has got you covered with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world!

Where else but on the Island of the Gods can you share in such a beautiful adventure together? Bali truly is the ideal destination for a romantic vacation thanks to its laid-back vibes, breathtaking beaches, luxurious resorts, and immersive adventures.

Important Information About Bali

Before we dive into our Bali 10 day itinerary, let’s take a look at some important info that will be helpful to know before planning a trip to Bali!

Climate:  Bali is only 8 degrees south of the equator, so its temperature is pretty stable all year round. The average temperature all year is around 86 °F, and the humidity is about 85%. While it’s pretty hot and humid year round, there are definitely better times of the year to go than others which I’ll go into more detail on below.

Religion:  In contrast to the rest of Indonesia, which is mostly Muslim, about 83.5% of Bali’s population follows Balinese Hinduism. Among the minorities are Islam (13.37%), Christianity (2.47%), and Buddhism (0.5%).

Language:  In Bali, the most common languages are Balinese and Indonesian. Due to the demands of the tourism sector, many Balinese speak English as their third language. In my experience, English was widely spoken everywhere we went on the island but it can be helpful to learn a couple of Balinese words to be polite!

Bali Currency:  The Indonesian rupiah is the currency in Bali (pronounced “rue-pee-ah”). IDR is the currency code, Rp is the currency symbol, and the USD to IDR exchange rate is the most popular Indonesian Rupiah exchange rate.

When is the Best Time to Visit Bali?

The best time to visit Bali is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. This time of year is ideal for taking advantage of the many outdoor activities and enjoying the beaches.

The summer months of July and August generally see increased tourism and hotel rates may be higher during this time.

Bali’s rainy season is from November through March and the island gets a considerable amount of rain making it tough to enjoy the outdoor activities and visibility for diving / snorkeling is reduced.

That being said, I planned a last minute trip in mid-November when I saw that there wasn’t any rain forecasted and we lucked out with the weather all 10 days in Bali!

Is Bali Safe to Visit?

Bali is considered a very safe place to visit for tourists. Of course, it’s important to use common sense and follow general safety rules while traveling to any foreign country. Be aware of your surroundings, don’t draw attention to yourself, be aware of any popular scams and make sure your valuables are in a safe place.

I’ve felt incredibly safe during my visits to Bali across all the different spots I’ve been to! The Balinese are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people I’ve met and Bali is a great place to visit for solo travel, couples and families.

Do You Need a Visa to Visit Bali?

US passport holders do not currently require a visa for short trips to Indonesia. For the purpose of tourism, American citizens are free from Indonesia’s visa requirements. As a result, visitors from the US can stay in the country for up to 30 days without a visa. Note that if you plan to stay in Indonesia for longer than 30 days as tourists, you must apply for a visa.

How to Get to Bali

Because Bali is an island, flying is the best and most popular way to get there. Bali has one international airport, the Denpasar-Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), which is located at the island’s southern point between Kuta and Jimbaran.

From the United States, there are no direct flights to Bali. Instead, most flights will have a connection in Asia (like Singapore or Hong Kong) or Australia (like Sydney or Melbourne).

I’ve connected in Hong Kong and Sydney to travel to Bali from the US and had easy travel experiences with both!

The primary airline companies that fly to Bali from the United States are Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific. From Europe, you can fly with KLM or Malaysia Airlines; from Australia, you can fly with Qantas or Garuda Indonesia; and from Japan, you can fly with Garuda Indonesia as well.

How to Get Around Bali 

Hiring a Private Driver : One of the most common ways for travelers to get around the island is to hire a driver for the day. This is what we did throughout our trip when traveling from one area of Bali to another. Our hotel set up a private driver to take us to our next destination and we found this to be a very comfortable and convenient way to travel! Traveling by private driver allowed us to really get the most out of our 10 day Bali itinerary.

Bluebird Taxis : If you want a taxi, Bluebird Taxi is the most widely accessible taxi service on the island. Recognized by their light blue color, Bluebird Taxis are easy to find throughout major tourist destinations in Bali and you can usually have a hotel or restaurant call you one. They even have their own app!

Scooters : Scooters are a popular way to navigate Bali. Due to the narrowness of the roads in Bali, scooters allow you to weave through traffic quicker than a car. If you’re experienced and comfortable driving a scooter in Asia, this could be a good option. However, if you’re inexperienced, driving a scooter in Bali can be dangerous due to the number of scooters on the road and different traffic rules. If you do rent a scooter, always make sure to wear a helmet (accidents happen!) and put your valuables in the trunk of the scooter (I’ve heard purse snatching happens sometimes!).

Ride-Hailing Apps : Grab and Gojek are the most popular ridesharing apps in Bali. Gojek has more scooter drivers available so is a better option for solo travelers in a hurry.

How Many Days Do You Need in Bali?

Wondering how many days to spend in Bali? Most visitors agree that 7–10 days in Bali is a good amount of time to see some of the best that the island has to offer including its world-famous beaches, rice terraces and volcanoes.

So is 10 days in Bali enough time? Ten days is an ideal length of time to spend on the island in order to experience many of Bali’s major highlights. That being said, if you have more than 10 days for your Bali itinerary, this could allow you to enjoy the island at a slower pace or visit some of the other nearby islands as well.

10 Day Bali Itinerary Overview

This 10 day Bali itinerary for couples has my personal picks for the best sights to see, restaurants to try, and accommodations to stay in.

This itinerary has an emphasis on luxury with some of Bali’s best hotels and will also allow you to immerse yourself in Bali’s rich local culture, laid-back bohemian lifestyle, and infinite natural beauty. 

So, would this be a good 10 day Bali honeymoon itinerary? Absolutely! While you could definitely use this itinerary for a trip with family or friends, the itinerary is great for couples as a romantic getaway, special occasion or honeymoon!

Alternate Itinerary Options

Note that this Bali travel itinerary is pretty jam-packed since the island has so much to see. If you wanted to create a Bali honeymoon itinerary at a slower pace, it would be easy to leave out some of the day trips and just relax on those days instead!

Another option would be to replace the days in the Nusa islands with a few nights in Uluwatu instead. While the Nusa islands are unique and beautiful, they are a bit tougher to get to (ferries required) and they are less developed so there won’t be luxury hotels like in Bali. On the other hand, Uluwatu has a number of ultra luxurious resorts and it will be much easier to travel to.

10 Day Bali Itinerary

DAY 0: Travel Day / Arrive in Bali

After traveling from LAX to Bali with a few hours layover in Hong Kong, we were tired and ready to check in to our hotel and relax. We were so excited when we were shown to our room at The Club at the Legian Seminyak as it felt like our own secluded tropical oasis. The room was really more of a charming private villa with its very own pool than a standard hotel room. After unpacking and getting settled, we enjoyed the resort’s pools and watched our first Balinese sunset on the beach!

As a starting point for your 10 day Bali itinerary, you can’t go wrong with Seminyak because of the wide range of dining, nightlife, and beaches that are available.

You have the option of staying at the Legian Seminyak, which is the only beachfront boutique resort in the area that provides a tranquil haven for its guests. The resort is located 40 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport, and within walking distance, you’ll find some of Bali’s most fashionable shopping and dining areas.

Seminyak is also close to the trendy Canggu area which is a hot spot for creatives, digital nomads, yogis and surfers from all over the world.

DAY 1: Explore Seminyak & Canggu

Breakfast at KYND Community

How would you like to start your first official day of the 10 day Bali itinerary? How about having your breakfast together at a picture-perfect cafe while snapping some Instagram-worthy photos? Then, head to KYND Community !

Bali is known for its cafe culture and refreshing smoothie bowls to help you beat the heat. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the food and the aesthetics here!

Tanah Lot and Batu Bolong Temples

After breakfast, visit the Tanah Lot temple, known for its distinctive offshore position (an island temple… how cool, right?!), as well as the Batu Bolong temple, which overlooks the gorgeous Indian Ocean and is surrounded by stunning seascapes.

Lounge at the Pool

After your morning visit to the temples, it’s time to cool down. Head back to the Legian Seminyak and enjoy an afternoon at one of their picturesque pools or beach club.

Or, if you’re keen to check out one of the trendy beach clubs in Canggu on the way home from Tanah Lot, you could stop at the Lawn Canggu Beach Club . This is a great place to unwind, grab lunch, try your hand at surfing or go for a refreshing dip in their pool.

Explore Seminyak

The Legian hotel is conveniently located in the heart of Seminyak. The area is packed with fashion boutiques, art galleries, cafes and restaurants. If you’re done lounging by the pool, why not wander around Seminyak for some shopping and ice cream?

Mad Pops is just a few blocks away and has some delicious ice cream. I got both the Pandan and Matcha flavors and it was so tasty and refreshing!

Watch Sunset at La Brisa

Finish the first day of your 10 day trip to Bali by enjoying sunset drinks and a romantic dinner at La Brisa .

This is my new favorite beach club in Canggu — I totally fell in love with the vibe of this spot, the drinks, the sunset… it was all so magical!

Instead of going to a restaurant for dinner, we ended up just eating dinner here since we were having such a good time and were very impressed by the food!

DAY 2: Day Trip to Uluwatu

On the next day of our 10 day Bali itinerary, we decided to do a day trip to Uluwatu since I had never been there (and neither had my boyfriend since it was his first time in Bali!). Of course, if you want to just enjoy the resort and relax around Seminyak and Canggu for the day, this day trip is totally optional. Uluwatu is about a 40 minute drive so it’s a bit of a trek but absolutely stunning if you can swing it!

Relax at Sundays Beach Club

Sundays Beach Club is the perfect place to spend the day in Uluwatu. The beach here is totally different than the beaches of Seminyak and Canggu. Set in a private cove, the water here is serenely calm and beautifully turquoise making it a great swimming beach. The food was also incredible so don’t miss grabbing lunch here!

Uluwatu Temple

After your relaxing beach day, visit Uluwatu Temple, where you can marvel at its striking cliffside position and maybe spot a monkey or two!

Karang Boma Cliff

Next, check out the Karang Boma Cliff, which is a famous spot for capturing the beauty of Bali. It’s a sight to behold at any time of day, but sunsets are especially spectacular from this cliff.

Ulu Cliffhouse is the perfect place to wind down after a long day with a sunset drink and mouthwatering food.

DAY 3: Travel to East Bali

Spend the morning enjoying the incredible breakfast buffet and soaking in the last relaxing moments at the Legian Seminyak before traveling to East Bali for the next few nights.

On the third day, we set up a private driver through the Legian Seminyak to take us to our next destination: Amankila.

After about a 1.5 hour drive through Bali’s gorgeous countryside, we arrived at the magnificent Amankila hotel. This spectacular luxury hotel sits on a cliff, beneath Mount Agung, overlooking the stunning Lombok Strait shoreline.

Here you’ll find a beach club that leads to a private black sand beach as well as a three-tiered infinity pool that looks out over the water. Spend the afternoon at the beach club, lounging by the pool, and paddle-boarding before enjoying dinner at Amankila’s restaurant.

Amankila is such a romantic hotel and would make a great addition to any Bali honeymoon itinerary!

DAY 4: Explore East Bali

East Bali is much more undiscovered than other parts of the island and feels more authentically Balinese. From views of the majestic Mount Agung and lush rice terraces to ancient temples and water palaces, there is so much to see in this striking region.

Amankila is uniquely positioned to explore this part of the island. As such, they offer both on-site activities and guided excursions that allow you to soak in the beautiful landscapes and culture of East Bali.

If you stay at Amankila, I would highly recommend taking advantage of these activities and excursions.

I’m not kidding when I say each one we did was so special and gave us memories that we will cherish forever. I know that sounds cheesy but we really do talk about our experiences at Amankila and around East Bali all the time!

Amankila organized a private tour for us to see some of East Bali’s best sights which we were able to customize to our preferences. So to kick off the East Bali part of our 10 day Bali itinerary, we decided to visit some of the region’s gorgeous water palaces and one of Bali’s oldest villages.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace

Our first stop on the East Bali tour was Tirta Gangga, which is a former royal water palace with colorful blooms, tiered fountains, mythical statuettes, and koi ponds. We chose to make this the first stop for the day since we heard that it can get quite busy. We were right… as we were leaving, many more people starting arriving. We were happy to get some peaceful moments in this tranquil place before then!

Ujung Water Palace

Our second stop was the Ujung Water Palace, which is an elegant complex of ponds and gardens that combines Balinese and European design with ocean views. This water palace was quite a bit larger than the first and seemed to be a bit more undiscovered. Both were beautiful in unique ways and worth visiting!

Tenganan Ancient Village

And finally, our last stop of the day was at the Tenganan Ancient Village, one of Bali’s oldest villages. This ancient village gives visitors a look into traditional Balinese life and culture. It’s also famous for its unique double ikat style of textile making — and we were able to see women weaving via this method in person!

Satay Evening Dinner

After a fabulous day of exploring East Bali, we returned to Amankila and enjoyed a little pool time before freshening up for dinner. We had booked the Satay Evening dinner and were guided up to the top of Tamansari Hill where we found a private bale just for us.

On one side of the bale were views of the gorgeous Lombok Strait and, on the other, jaw-dropping views of lush jungle and Mount Agung. As we watched the sun set, our friendly chef and server guided us through a delectable satay feast. It was incredible to taste the authentic flavors of Balinese cuisine in such a dreamy setting.

This dinner experience is a must for a romantic getaway or honeymoon in Bali!

DAY 5: Visit Virgin Beach & Travel to the Nusa Islands

Boat Cruise to Virgin Beach

First thing in the morning, go on a leisurely excursion aboard Amankila’s traditional outrigger boat.

This boat is so unique as it features a rooftop lounge bed! This was the perfect spot to take in the coastline views as you cruise to Virgin beach. I now feel that all boats should have rooftop lounge beds (hah!).

Arriving at Virgin Beach, I was blown away by its beauty. As someone who is always on the lookout for gorgeous white sand beaches with the clearest blue waters, this beach checked all the boxes!

Our guide took us snorkeling and showed us around the pristine waters, even stopping to see a sea turtle. And, on our way back, we enjoyed a tasty lunch that the hotel had packed for us.

Take a Ferry to Nusa Ceningan

After the boat cruise, check out from Amankila and take the ferry from Padang Bai to the Yellow Bridge. The Yellow Bridge connects the Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan islands together. While the ferry drops you off on the Nusa Lembongan side of the bridge, it’s easy to walk over the bridge and arrive in Nusa Ceningan.

Blue Lagoon Avia Villa

After arriving on the beautiful Nusa Ceningan island, we checked into the Blue Lagoon Avia Villa hotel. This cute boutique hotel is set directly above the iconic Blue Lagoon with an infinity pool looking over it… how amazing is that?!

DAY 6: Explore Nusa Ceningan & Nusa Lembongan

So now that you’re on this beautiful island off the coast of Bali, what are the best things to do in Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan?

Rent a Scooter

While I didn’t feel comfortable renting a scooter in Seminyak or Canggu, the Nusa islands are a different story! The laid-back islands of Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan are much easier to navigate with little traffic on the roads. So, the best way to explore these islands is definitely by scooter! We rented a scooter from the shop across from the Blue Lagoon Avia Villa to explore both islands.

Sand Ceningan Beach Bar

To start your first day on Nusa Ceningan, make your way to the Sand Ceningan Beach Bar on your scooter and have a super-chilled breakfast. Just a short drive from the Blue Lagoon Avia Villa, the Sand Ceningan is located on a stretch of gorgeous beach and is one of the best restaurants on Nusa Ceningan!

Pro Tip: Check the tide schedule before heading here to see when high tide is… that’s the best time to enjoy the views!

Relax at Nusa Ceningan’s Secret Beach

Soak in the scenery and go for a dip at the Secret Beach, a little beach off the beaten track. To get here, put in directions for “Villa Trevally.”

Lunch at Ohana’s Beach Club

Now it’s time to head over to Nusa Lembongan by crossing the Yellow Bridge via scooter. For lunch, visit Ohana’s restaurant and beach club for a bite and refreshing plunge in their pool.

Take in the Views at Nusa Lembongan’s Secret Beach

If you’d like to check out another gorgeous beach on Nusa Lembongan, there’s another “secret” beach that’s a little less crowded than some of the others on the island. For directions to this beach, you can just put in “secret beach” into your Maps app!

Sunset at Mahana Point

Wrap up your island hopping day by watching an awe-inspiring sunset at Mahana Point. This is a great place to see skilled surfers catch some waves with distant views of Mount Agung in the background while having a casual dinner and drinks.

DAY 7: Snorkel / Dive & Travel to Nusa Penida

Breakfast at Sea Breeze Cafe

Another day, another delicious breakfast smoothie bowl! Sea Breeze Cafe is just minutes from The Sand and is located on the beach with stunning views.

Snorkel or Dive with Ceningan Divers

After breakfast, it’s time to explore under the sea with Ceningan Divers . The Nusa islands are a great place to dive and a popular place to see manta rays, sea turtles and more.

Since I’m not certified to dive, I was able to join the dive group and snorkel while my boyfriend and the rest went diving. Honestly, I’m sure the dive was amazing but I think I had just as much fun snorkeling the beautiful reef; seeing tons of colorful fish and sea turtles!

Boat to Nusa Penida

It’s time to say goodbye to Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan to leave for Nusa Penida! There’s a ferry that leaves from the Yellow Bridge to Nusa Penida but we were able to hire a small private boat to take us over after our dive / snorkel trip. It’s a very quick and easy trip!

We booked our Nusa Penida lodging last minute and were lucky to find availability at the Angkal Resort ! It was a cute boutique hotel that had all the amenities we needed: a ferry transfer, a pool to cool off from the heat, a restaurant with good food, and a friendly concierge person who was able to help us rent a scooter for the evening and set up a private driver for the next day.

Watch Sunset at Diamond Beach

After renting our scooter for the evening, we went straight to Diamond Beach for sunset. After battling some potholes on the roads, we finally made it to the beach. And… WOW! This dramatic beach is absolutely breathtaking and worth the trek.

Note: If we had an extra day in our 10 day trip to Bali, I probably would’ve added it here for another night on Nusa Penida. This rugged island is chock-full of natural beauty but its infrastructure is less developed and it can take an hour to get from one side of the island to the other. While we were able to see most of the highlights on the island, I would’ve loved to have more time to enjoy this beautiful beach the next day!

DAY 8: Explore Nusa Penida & Travel to Ubud

Kelingking Beach

Start your day at Kelingking Beach, arguably one of the most photogenic sites on this 10 day Bali itinerary, which is famous for its T-Rex shaped cliffs.

We were up bright and early to begin our day since we wanted to beat the crowds at the famous Kelingking Beach… Which was totally worth it! We were some of the first people to arrive and had the viewpoint to ourselves for a while. Later in the day, tour buses come and the viewpoint and stairs down to the beach can get overrun… So be sure to arrive super early!

Broken Beach

Then, make your way to the beautiful Broken Beach, a massive rock archway where you can admire the ocean as it rushes in and out of a natural bowl surrounded by high cliffs. It’s also next to Angel’s Billabong, an incredible natural pool with dramatic crashing waves.

Another popular stop in the area is Crystal Bay, a secluded cove with an idyllic white sand beach and grove of palm trees.

Lunch Secret Penida Cafe

To wrap up your time on Nusa Penida, grab a healthy lunch at the Secret Penida Cafe . This cute cafe is waterfront and conveniently located near the ferry terminal.

Ferry to Sanur

After lunch, take the ferry from Nusa Penida to Sanur to get back to mainland Bali. The fast boat ferry takes about 45 minutes and costs around $30 per person. After getting to Sanur, we made the 30 minute drive to our final destination on our 10 day Bali trip: Ubud.

After island hopping for the past few days, we were very excited to arrive in the tropical, lush jungles of Ubud. The Four Seasons Sayan is one of the most beautiful hotel properties I’ve been to and our room was DREAMY. With a private plunge pool and riverfront views, we were in heaven!

We spent the rest of the day relaxing by our pool and eating dinner at the delicious Ayung Terrace restaurant at the hotel.

DAY 9: AM Trip to North Bali & Explore Ubud

From Ubud, we decided to do an early morning trip to North Bali since my boyfriend was interested in playing golf at Handara Golf Resort. I was happy to go and check out the iconic Handara Gate and their spa, and see the Ulun Danu temple as well. If you’d prefer a more relaxing day, this would be a great day to chill at the Four Seasons Sayan resort and explore Ubud instead!

Handara Gate

Our early morning wakeup meant we arrived at the Handara Golf Resort first thing in the morning. There, we were able to see the iconic Handara Gate and take some photos without anyone else there. It’s such a spectacular view of lush greenery and a gigantic-exotic traditional Balinese gate as your backdrop.

On our way out, there were a line of people waiting to take a photo at the gate… another win for getting up early in Bali!

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

Our next stop was to soak in the architectural brilliance of the Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple, also referred to as the Floating Temple. Located on a serene lake in the mountains of North Bali, this picturesque 12-story pagoda temple looks almost as if it’s floating on the lake!

Ubud Art Market

After heading back to the hotel for lunch and to freshen up, we decided to go into Ubud to explore the Ubud Art Market. The market is a great place to buy hand-crafted goods made by talented Balinese artists to bring home as souvenirs. From dresses, sarongs and jewelry to wood-carved bowls and macrame hammocks, the market has a diverse range of beautiful crafts.

Dinner at Nusantara by Locavore

Restaurant Locavore is one of the top restaurants in Ubud but, sadly, there were no reservations available during our stay in Ubud. So instead, we tried their sister restaurant, Nusantara !

And, this ended up being one of my favorite meals on our trip! The food was incredible and I loved that we were able to experience cuisine from all the different regions of Indonesia (not just Balinese cuisine).

DAY 10: Temples, Rice Terraces & Waterfalls

For our last day of the 10 day Bali itinerary, we decided we were ready for one final adventure. The Four Seasons Sayan set us up with a wonderful private tour to see a temple, waterfall and rice terraces… some of the best things that inland Bali has to offer. Note that, again, this day trip is totally optional — if you’d prefer to enjoy the resort and explore more of Ubud, that would make a wonderful last day in Bali as well.

Pura Taman Ayun

About 25 minutes from the Four Seasons Sayan, the magnificent Pura Taman Ayun temple is a complex of 17th century temples surrounded by water. This serene spot feels like stepping back in time!

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

While Ubud is known for its famous Tegalalang rice terraces, the Jatiluwih rice terraces are a bit lesser known and perhaps a better example of rural Bali. These are some of the largest and most picturesque rice fields in Bali, with views of Mount Batukaru in the backdrop.

Leke Leke Waterfall

After seeing photos of Leke Leke waterfall, I knew I had to visit! After about a 15 minute walk, we arrived at the falls and found it to be uncrowded (a rare occurrence for Bali’s waterfalls!). This small but incredibly beautiful waterfall is surrounded by lush green jungle and cascades down into an emerald pool.

Relax at the Spa

After getting back to the hotel, we decided to spend our last afternoon relaxing at the Four Seasons Sayan’s Sacred River Spa. Our couples massage was a very relaxing and romantic way to finish our Bali trip!

Balinese Chef’s Table Dinner

Our final dinner at the Four Seasons was the traditional Balinese chef’s table dinner. Our friendly chef prepared seven courses of traditional Balinese dishes (including a suckling pig!) at the riverside kitchen. It was an unforgettable meal and evening!

Tips For Visiting Bali

Now that we’ve gone over the complete 10 day Bali itinerary for couples, there are a few tips that you should be aware of when visiting the Island of the Gods.

Beware of Bali Belly

Firstly, be aware that many visitors experience “Bali Belly” which is essentially traveler’s diarrhea and is caused by consuming bacteria in contaminated food or water. To reduce your risk of getting Bali Belly, avoid drinking tap water. This means avoiding unfiltered ice cubes, coffee with tap water, foods rinsed in tap water and using caution when brushing your teeth or showering. Of course, if you’re at a hotel or restaurant frequented by tourists, the water is generally filtered and safe to consume. Another good tip to follow is to be careful when eating street food — generally, you want to eat at places that are busy (they’re popular for a reason!) as they are turning out food that is freshly made for new customers.

Indulge in Balinese Cuisine

On the flip side, you shouldn’t let the fear of getting Bali Belly stop you from indulging in delicious Balinese cuisine! Coming from the US, Balinese cuisine tastes very exotic to me. The different spices, flavors and ingredients are so unique and fun to try! Here are some of the dishes I would definitely recommend eating while in Bali:

• Mie Goreng: This Balinese dish is a staple at restaurants and street vendors. It’s a stir fry noodle dish with egg noodles, vegetables, meat, and soy sauce.
• Nasi Goreng: Another staple is fried rice that comes in many varieties that can be vegetarian, or with chicken, beef or pork.
• Soto Ayam: Who doesn’t love chicken soup? This comforting chicken soup gets its yellow color from the turmeric spices used in it.
• Gado Gado: An Indonesian salad made up of eggs, tempeh, tofu, bean sprouts, cucumber, and peanut sauce.
• Nasi Campur: Made up of an assortment of dishes, Nasi Campur typically features several grilled meats, vegetables and white rice.
• Beef Rendang: Originally from West Sumatra, this slow cooked beef dish is now popular with locals and tourists in Bali.
• Babi Guling: Suckling pig that is slow roasted in the traditional Balinese style.
• Satay (also written Sate): Grilled meat on a stick is a popular street snack as well as at restaurants.
• Dadar Gulung: Got a sweet tooth? This Balinese dessert was my favorite! It’s a crepe flavored with pandan leaves and stuffed with coconut and palm sugar.
• Fresh fruit: I just couldn’t get over how delicious the fruit was in Bali. I love eating passion fruit at home in the US but in Bali it tastes 1,000 times better! My other favorite was rambutan which has a strange, hairy exterior shell but tastes sweet (and a bit like lychee!) inside.

Respect Local Customs & Rules

It’s always important to be aware and respectful of local customs. When visiting religious sites and temples, be sure to check the rules for appropriate dress, photography, etc. Most temples require men and women to cover their shoulders / upper arms as well as thighs. Some temples even have sarongs that you can borrow or rent to cover up!

The Balinese leave daily offerings on the floor outside of homes and businesses, be careful not to step on or crush these offerings.

Lastly, learning basic Balinese words and smiling is always appreciated!

Go Early to Beat the Crowds

As you’ve probably gathered from the Bali trip itinerary, we woke up early to make the most out of our days and beat the crowds at the popular tourists spots.

Sunrise is between 5:50 – 6:30am and sunset is between 6 – 6:45pm (depending on the time of year). Many of the temples, palaces and other attractions opened at 8am so we would wake up around sunrise and get going to make it for opening time.

While this isn’t for everyone (and I’m not usually that early of a riser!), I really recommend doing this if you want to enjoy some of the popular sights without throngs of people.

Also, getting up early and seeing so many things in the morning usually meant that we could have a few hours of chill pool / beach or spa time in the afternoons before watching sunset and going to dinner.

Have Cash on Hand

While hotels and many restaurants accept credit cards, it’s still important to have cash at many places like markets, street vendors, tourist sites, and taxis. Also, the cash will come in handy for tipping tour guides, drivers and for any other friendly service you receive!

There are plenty of ATMs around the island’s most popular tourist destinations so it should be easy to grab cash whenever you need it. I always have my Schwab card with me for international travel so I don’t get hit with crazy international fees!

Be Careful of the Monkeys

While they may look cute, the monkeys in Bali are notoriously mischievous. The macaques breed of monkeys seen around temples, forests and, of course, the Ubud Monkey Sanctuary, are quite clever. They’ve been known to steal sunglasses, wallets and even phones from tourists and won’t return them until they receive food in exchange. Don’t try to touch them either as they can bite!

What to Pack for 10 Days in Bali

Wondering what to pack for your 10 day Bali itinerary? With the heat and humidity on the island, be sure to pack light, breathable clothing. I mostly wore sundresses, swimsuits and beach cover ups. Also make sure to bring shoes that are comfortable for all your adventures!

Mosquitoes absolutely love me so bug spray is essential when I’m traveling to a tropical destination like Bali. If you get bit like me, make sure to bring some!

Travel Adapter

I always bring this handy worldwide travel adapter with me when I’m traveling to a country with different outlet types. It’s lasted me years too!

Reef Friendly Sunscreen

Sunscreen is absolutely essential in Bali and I love this reef safe option!

Travel Towel

Some of Bali’s tougher to reach beaches don’t have any amenities on them (no beach clubs, lounge chairs, restaurants, etc.) so having a light weight towel is essential.

If you’re planning to hit the beach or get on a boat at all, a dry bag can be super helpful in keeping your valuables dry and sand-free.

Dramamine & Pepto

Dramamine can come in handy if you get motion sickness on the ferries, and this Pepto kills bacteria that cause diarrhea (bye, bye Bali Belly!)

Bali will forever be one of my favourite destinations in the world. One of the many thousands of islands in Indonesia, Bali oozes character, charm and beauty.

I fell in love with Bali instantly, and it’s easy for couples who are travelling here to do the same. Keep reading to discover 40 romantic things to do in Bali .

Now for the part you lovers came for! The list of 40 romantic things to do in Bali. These 40 things are sure to leave any couple feeling loved and content.

They aren’t in any particular order, just what I thought of first!

1. The world’s most romantic sunset at Uluwatu Temple

This will forever be one of my fondest memories in Bali, and travelling in general. This was the best sunset I’ve ever seen to-date (2019). The atmosphere, and the setting just oozed romance.

Uluwatu temple is situated on the sea, so you have the great sea to look out too along with the vast sky. There is no air pollution, nothing hiding the view and when you sit on the wall, with a Bintang (or soft drink) in hand, you will be amazed by the sunset that appears.

It’s not guaranteed to be as amazing as the evening I was there. There can be off days of course, but you can check the weather before deciding to go, just in case.

It’s a SUPER romantic setting, trust me.

2. Stroll along Seminyak beach

There are a lot of beautiful beaches to walk hand in hand together in Bali, but I have fond memories of this one.

I remember walking late at night and it was only the light of the buildings to shine on the beach.

The waves were crashing and the stars were shining bright. It was a very peaceful moment.

The great thing about seminyak is that it’s filled with quirky, upmarket restaurants, so it’s a really good place for a date night. Dine by candlelight, then walk along the beach afterwards: bliss.

3. Jet Ski together at Nusa Dua

Nusa Dua is located on the south of Bali and it has bright blue waters. The type you see on Instagram and think “that totally has a filter on it”, well they are that blue. The water is also warm and clean. I really like this beach…

But, what this beach in Bali is really well known for is its watersports!

They are also very cheap. But as you walk along the beach, you’ll have lots of people selling a variety of water activities, and one that is pretty cool is jet skiing.

I think jet skiing together is quite romantic, especially if you’re the type of couples who seeks adrenaline.

If jet skiing isn’t your thing, then you could para-sail too.

There are lots of nice restaurants on Nusa Dua to enjoy a delicious lunch, but they are more expensive than the average in Bali.

4. Surf together in Balangan beach

Balangan beach is another beach that’s got the most amazing blue water. It’s great for swimming, but you go here for the surf.

Obviously Bali has some amazing surf spots and thanks to lessons for around $3 and board rental just as cheap, it’s no wonder people love to surf here.

If you’re into surfing, then hit up Balangan beach. It’s not a beginners beach, but it’s got beautiful views and great little beach huts serving up drinks and snacks.

It’s also got super cheap sunbeds to relax after catching some waves.

If you want to take a surf lesson together, then head to Kuta beach.

5. Relax at Jimbaran beach

Jimbaran is a couples beach. It gives off that vibe. It’s actually quite quiet, there aren’t surfing waves as such and it’s just a really beautiful and clean beach.

I’d say, pack a picnic, hop on your moped, drive there for the day and simply relax in each others company.

6. Get Wet and Wild at one of the worlds best water parks!

If you like to have fun as a couple, then this is definitely on the list of romantic things to do in Bali. Bradley and I spent the whole day at this waterpark and it was brilliant.

It’s voted the number 1 waterpark in Asia and it’s BRILLIANT!

We laughed, screamed down slides, recorded our adventures on our GoPro, floated down the lazy river together then shared a pizza.

Romance is different for everyone, and this is romantic to us.

The best thing about the waterpark (apart from how clean, cheap and great fun it is?), is the STAFF.

The Balinese are some of the nicest people in the world, so imagine that x10 and that’s the staff at Waterbom Bali.

‍ 7. Snorkel together at Menjangan Island

Snorkelling is another romantic thing to do in Bali for couples who love something different.  

This island is located just a short 10 minute boat trip from the mainland of Bali and is part of the Menjangan National Marine Park.

A trip here will grace you with some of the best coral reefs in all of Indonesia, and you’ll be swimming in those Instagram perfect clean turquoise waters.

Expect to see some amazing varieties of tropical fish including everyone's favourites, Dory, Nemo and Marlin.

8. Cocktails at Potato Head Beach Club

Potato Head Beach Club is one of my favourite beach clubs and places in Bali in general. Firstly because it’s called potato head beach club, which is just brilliant, and secondly, it offers a luxurious experience with beautiful food and drinks, service and views.

It tends to sell out, so I would book online when you know you want to go. You and your partner can dine and relax in style.

9. Visit Ubud Monkey Forest

Another one of the romantic things to do in Bali is a trip to Monkey Forest. I was a little nervous about going here, because I’ve actually developed a fear of monkeys over the years.

I think it’s because they are so unpredictable and their teeth are massive.

Anyway, I went with Bradley anyway and it was a lot of fun! The forest itself is beautiful and a nice place to stroll.

Then throw in the chance to have monkeys on your head whilst eating bananas, then you’ve got a weird romantic date!

This is one of the best things to do in Bali, romantic or not.

10. Take a sunset cruise

This is something I haven’t done, but after research, will be doing when I return to Bali. (You always want to return to Bali….trust me)

There are a range of both commercial and private boat operators providing romantic evening sunset cruises.

Imagine being serenaded by musicians while sipping on a glass of champagne whilst eating fine food.

This is a brilliant activities for those on their honeymoon who want an everlasting memory with lots of romance.

11. Make a day of it in Canggu

Canggu is the hip and happening, boho, quirky, (every word associated with that), area of Bali.

I love Canggu, mainly for it’s amazing coffee shops, and it’s quirky restaurants. If you want one of those famous fruit bowls (again a favourite on Instagram), then this is the place to find it.

I think Canggu is a great day outing. You can start your day with brunch in one of the many cafes, then head for a spot of shopping.

There are so many cute boutique shops, and they even do quirky markets around here too.

Canggu is the shopping hot spot of Bali.

Afterwards, head to the beach for a spot of sunbathing or surfing, then end your day at “Old Man’s”, the best bar in Canguu with the best sunset views, the best cocktail hour and the best music.

12. Romantic dinner on the beach under the stars

Ooooooooh yes. When you are staying at one of the amazing hotels on offer for couples in Bali, then they will easily be able to arrange a private sunset dinner on the beach.

Complete with romance, beauty and candlelight.

This is the perfect way to celebrate those special moments, such as an anniversary, a honeymoon….or...even a proposal.

13. Hike up Mount Batur

Hiking might not be the most romantic thing to do for some couples, but others find physical adventure and activity to be great bonding experiences, and I agree.

But, whilst the hike up here might be a challenge, or hard (because it’s 4 am in the morning and all you wanna do is sleep and you’ve taken 4 hypos because you’re type 1 diabetic….woo)

Anyway, the sunrise views from this volcano were unbelievably beautiful. I’ve always wanted to hike up a volcano, and the views will forever stay in my memory.

It’s such a romantic moment and something I recommend all couples to do on a trip to Bali.

You go with a guide and it’s super cheap and the guide makes it fun too (or at least ours was amazing!)

14. Watch Dolphins at sunrise

Dolphins make everyone happy. They make people even happier when they’re in their natural habitat.

Well, thankfully Bali presents you with a great opportunity to see dolphins on the northern border. Head to Lovina and book yourself in for a sunrise dolphin tour.

15. Have lunch by the Ubud Tegallalang Rice Terraces

These are most of the most beautiful rice paddies in the world. When visiting you can walk through them and explore different areas, but afterwards, I recommend you head to one of the restaurants that are located on the “side”.

They overlook the rice terraces and its truly a breathtaking view and a very romantic moment. Enjoy some lunch with a glass of wine.

16. Get a couples massage

One of the things I really loved about Bali is how damn cheap massages are.

In Kuta, I could get a foot and leg massage and a pedicure for less than $4. HOW.

But I did it often because its so cheap.

There is also many opportunities for couples massages. If you have a nice hotel, you can usually arrange a beautiful couples massage with a view.

But regardless of your setting, this is a great way to relax and unwind together.

17. Chase waterfalls

Bali is filled with beautiful waterfalls to discover and I think it’s quite romantic swimming in waterfalls together.

18. Spend the day at West Bali National Park

If you love discovering animals, seeing beautiful views and being among nature, then this is the day trip for you.

With a picturesque mountain range, lush green forests, crystal clear blue water, and vast stretches of pristine beaches, it’s no wonder couples love visiting West Bali National Park.

I haven’t been up to North/West Bali yet, but I have every intention to on my return.

What’s good about this area is that it’s less touristy and more “made for couples”.

You’ll probably find beaches are are secluded and feel like you’ve escaped to your very own little island.

19.   Discover Nusa Penida & Lembongan

Visit Sanur (which is what I would call the family holiday area of Bali) and catch a fast boat from Sanur and escape the main island of Bali for a few days.

Discover the smaller and exotic islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan . Rent a scooter on the island and explore unknown places, magical beaches, and jungle surroundings.

Discover Angel’s Billabong, or head somewhere secluded and uncover the amazing views found at Pantai Atuh Beach.Then visit the snorkel/scuba diving hub of Lembongan and snorkel the colourful reefs along the ocean.

Head along the iconic yellow bridge to Nusa Ceningan for a romantic stroll and fall in love all over again.

21. Take a romantic ride by horseback at Bali Equestrian Centre

If you love horses, then you’re going to love this. This isn’t a typical equestrian centre, it’s attracted celebrities, Olympians and many from all across the world. It’s a 5 star rating so saddle up for a horse ride along the beach, just like they do in the movies. You’ll discover rice fields, villages, creeks and temples located right by the beach. Magical!

22. Find the hidden beach of Gunung Payung in Nusa Dua

Let’s face it, crowded beaches aren’t exactly romantic, but you can find your own hidden beach with your partner by escaping to Gunung Payung Beach. The beach is incredibly remote, so pack a picnic with some refreshing drinks, a book, some music and get ready for a romantic day by the beach together.

23. Swing your worries away at the famous Kamandalu Swing

Kamandalu is much more romantic than just its swing, but the tandem swing for two does make a perfect, romantic photo opportunity.

You’re facing the jungles of Bali with nothing but greenery surrounding you. Afterwards grab a bite to eat at one of the fantastic resorts or take a boat ride and transport yourself to Venice. Definitely one of the most romantic things to do in Bali.

24. A couples photoshoot at “Bali Swing”

Bali swing is a company that takes you out to the jungle and gives you ample couples photo opportunities, including the chance to swing over the jungle solo, the romantic bed on the edge, 4 amazing stones perched over the edge with amazing views.

I love coffee, and I know most couples survive on coffee nowadays, so why not head on a beautiful coffee plantation tour in Bali. Coffee Luwak has a unique history behind the legend. 27. Go River Rafting on the Ayung River

Want to catch some rapids on the biggest and longest river in Bali. Of course you do! Brad and I did River rafting in Croatia and it was a lot of fun.

The Ayung River is class II and may rise to class IV during rainy season. 2 hours of adventure will see experience the natural scenery, wildlife, and exotic plants of Bali. If you book with a tour like this one, you will get lunch and transport included. It’s pretty damn cheap! ($30)

28. Discover the Gates of Heaven at Lempuyang Temple

The Bali Gates Of Heaven have, without a doubt, become one of the most Instagrammed photos of Bali in recent years. When I went, not so much. This temple is located in the East of Bali, so many people don’t bother going.

It’s 2.5 hours from Ubud and you can hire a driver or drive your own moped there. It’s the iconic photos of the gates that overlook the mountain and it brings amazing shots.

There are other temples within it that are also very beautiful.

PS some Instagram photos show “water” just below the temple gates, but this is photoshopped/a reflective sneaky lens is used!

29. Discover the amazing Tukad Cepung waterfall

And when I say amazing, I mean amazing. It’s one of the unique spots in Bali (which probably won’t be unique for very long actually), but this waterfall is something truly beautiful.

The circular cliffs that surround it give you the feeling of being in a cave, while the open sky right from where the waterfall emerges, gives you the most beautiful view.

As the sunlight falls on the glistening waterfall, it creates a rainbow, which makes for an amazing, romantic moment and an awesome picture.

It’s about 30 km from Ubud, so get an uber, driver or moped there yourself. Or you can stop on part of a tour.

 30. Take a hot air balloon ride

Hot air balloon rides are uber romantic in general, but then add Bali to the mix and it’s SUPER romantic.

Witness breathtaking views over lush tropical forests of Ubud to holy Mount Agung on the eastern horizon.

When you book with this tour, it includes a romantic breakfast, afternoon tea, or dinner, depending on when you go.

It’s not expensive either and you ovi need to book with a tour because you can’t go up there on your own!

Yes, elephants. Enjoy a candlelit dinner at Gayo Restaurant overlooking the Elephant Park, watch amazing dance shows by costumed performers and more. (The elephants aren’t dancing btw) It’s a really cool fire dance!

32.  Walk under water together

When I first seen this, I thought, “What?!”. Yes, it’s possible to put a suit on with a large bobble for breathing and literally walk under water together. You’ll be among the fishes and sea life and I am sure it’s an experience like no other.

Definitely a romantic activity for couples who are more adventurous!

33. Take an Underwater adventure with a Submarine tour

Get yourself on a submarine with your loved one and explore the underwater world of Bali (which is rarely visited). You will have a pilot on board who will tell you everything you need to know and you’ll dive 300 feet underwater.

You’ll see amazing sea life and fish and stunning corals all around you. Perfect for those who want to see underwater life but don’t like the idea of snorkelling or scuba diving.

34. Take a chocolate tour at the Pod Chocolate Factory

Is there anything quite as indulgent and romantic as chocolate? Of course not! Chocolate has always been a traditional symbol of love and you visit the Pod chocolate factory to harvest, roast and crush your own chocolate into various shapes.

You’ll get to bring your very own chocolate treats for each other home.

35. Relax in hot springs

Wherever there are volcanoes, you’ll find wonderful hot springs, and Bali is no different. One of my favourite is at the Tegal Wangi Beach. It’s got a hot spring, which is basically like a private, natural Jacuzzi with a stunning view of the ocean. It looks breathtaking and I can’t imagine anything more romantic than relaxing with your loved one with that view.

Bring a couple of drinks with you and you’ve got the perfect set up. Don’t forget to bring all your rubbish with you when you leave!

36. Walk among the Sidemen rice paddies

Sidemen is described as what Ubud looked like 20 years ago. It's tranquil, it's stunning and it's one of the most romantic spots in Bali. There are many amazing villas in this area for the perfect romantic getaway. For a great place to stay I suggest Villa Karma Loka , Brad and I felt like it was a perfect honeymoon spot, even though we weren't on our honeymoon! 

You can take private walks among the rice terraces here and there is no one around! 

37. Try the elephant mud fun at Bali Zoo

If you want an ethical way to interact with beautiful elephants then join them in the mud! This experience allows you to get up close and personal with these amazing animals. You will get muddy, as will they, but that's all part of the fun. This is such a fun activity and the on-hand photographers will capture the most amazing pictures for you to frame.

38.Sleep among the Rice Paddies at Sunset Sala

I have to recommend this place for couples because Brad and I thought it was one of the most romantic spots ever. There was no one around other than birds, a cat and a couple of locals harvesting rice.

The scenery is amazing and you stay in an open gazebo that offers stunning sunset views. You can have a private dinner on your porch with views of the rice terraces and a romantic breakfast. It's truly an amazing place and I've linked it here . We booked via Airbnb! 

A nice spot for a proposal, just saying! :P

39. Wander though Balai Gili

This is a spot in East Bali we stumbled across accidentally. It's a water palace, garden and you've probably seen the pics of the other water garden that has the fish. Well that is crazy touristy and honestly, not that pretty. However this one has lots of fish, and is so well maintained.

It's super peaceful and a perfect place to pack a picnic and relax. Stroll hand in hand and admire the beauty. This was one of my personal favourite romantic things to do in Bali, Indonesia.

40. Breakfast with the Orangutans

Another unique experience offered by Bali Zoo is breakfast with the orangutans. You are literally enjoying a delicious breakfast buffet (with everything you could imagine) with a few cheeky orangutans swinging around you! What a fun experience that you don't see everyday. But hold on to your hats, because they will steal them! :P

So there you have it, I’ve listed 40 amazingly romantic things to do in Bali. These things are perfect for all couples, whether you’re simply travelling the world together, taking a holiday, celebrating an anniversary or on your amazing honeymoon.

I also think there is a lovely selection of thing to do here that suit various styles of couples, whether you’re adventurous, love to relax to love to try new things together.

That’s the amazing thing about Bali, is that it’s got something to suit every single person, and it’s got things to do that will cater to all budgets.

So if you’re on a tight budget, you’ll have just as a romantic time as those who can splash the cash!

Is Bali good for couples?

Of course it is. There is a reason why it’s one of the top honeymoon destinations in the world. It gives you everything you could possibly want as a couple.

But what I really love about Bali for couples is the great value it is. Yes, it may be a little expensive to get out to Bali (depending on where you are flying from), but once you get there, you can get 5 star accommodation, your own private pools, your own private beaches, everything romantic you can think of, for a really cheap price.

Bali is quite a diverse island and there is truly something to suit every type of couple.

If you love to party, then you may find you love Kuta with its many clubs and bars.

Or, if you love the idea of relaxing whilst surrounded by rice paddies, then hello Canguu. OR, want to be surrounded by just fields of green and stunning nature, then rent your own property in Ubud or Sidemen.

Those famous “honeymoon destinations” that you see all over Instagram are also possible, and you’ll typically find them away from the more tourist side of Bali.

I've been to Bali twice now, for a total of 6 weeks, so I know quite a few romantic spots and romantic things to do in Bali.

When is the best time to visit Bali?

PEAK season in Bali is June, July, August and the start of September. You’ll typically find flights are more expensive around this time of year. But it’s peak for a reason, the weather is safe to visit.

For the best deals, book in advance by at least 3-4 months and I always use Skyscanner to check my flights.

When we travelled around July time it cost around $500 return.

How do I get to Bali?

There are many airlines who fly to Bali from the UK. We flew with Emirates and it was lovely. It had a stop in Dubai.

If you find yourself backpacking Southeast Asia before you visit Bali. (I recommend Thailand, Vietnam & Cambodia at the very least), then it’s always a good idea to make your way to Bangkok for direct flights to Bali.

It doesn’t take very long and the prices are quite competitive because Bangkok is a central hub and has lots of airlines flying to and from.

Remember Bali has active volcanoes, and as shown in the past, if they produce ash or dust, then it can halt flights into and out of Bali.

Bare this in mind when booking and remember that airlines don’t typically cover you insurance wise for that type of occurrence because it’s so unpredictable.

If you are coming from the capital of Indonesia (Java), then you can get cheap flights from there too.

You can also get a ferry from Java to Bali and there is lots of information about that here.

How long should I stay in Bali?

I think 2 weeks is a perfect amount for couples. 1 week is too little, and 2 weeks is enough to do everything and experience everything Bali and the surrounding islands have to offer.

If you are really stuck for time, then you could do 10 days, but I know you’ll want to have stayed longer once you get out there. But 2 weeks is a wonderful amount of time for a honeymoon.

I would actually recommend staying somewhere more central to access the south and middle of Bali, then on your second week head up North to experience how secluded and beautiful it and the west of Bali is.

We were there for 3 weeks, but we were working at the same time, so that’s why we needed longer. When we return it will probably be another 3 week trip, just because we love it so much!

Getting around Bali

Bali is quite a small island, so it’s easy enough to navigate.

I’ve actually done a whole post on the best ways to get around Bali, but above all, I would consider two main options.

1. Rent a moped

We rented a moped for less than $2 a day for 3 weeks, and it was the easiest way to get around the whole island.

It may seem a little daunting at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be driving like a local in no time.

You can rent your moped online.

2. Use Grab and Go Jek

Yes, the local taxi drivers don’t like these ride sharing apps, but they are cheap, safe and very convenient. I would use an Grab driver for longer drives, or if you’re drinking and cannot (DO NOT) drive a moped back.

On grab you can even rent a driver for 4, 6, 8 or 12 hours to be your driver for the day for super cheap!

Where to stay in Bali

Bali has some amazing honeymoon destinations and romantic spots for couples. It’s very difficult for me to choose specific places.

Everything has its own appeal, and I’ve also got a guide on where to stay with some recommendations here.

But, if we are talking romance, then I’m going to suggest these 4 outrageously romantic places in Bali.

PS, if you don’t fancy staying in a 5 star resort, you can rent out your own villa in Bali on airbnb for an excellent price. Some of the villas are unbelievable.

Private pools, some private chefs, some surrounded by jungle and rice paddies, there is truly something for every type of couple on there.

1. Menjangan Dynasty Resort

This is one of the nicest resorts I have ever seen in my life. It was literally built for couples. Accommodation comes in luxury (and I mean luxury) air conditioned tents and it’s located on the beach with the bluest of blue waters surrounding you.

You can opt for your own private cliff tent villa that has its own infinity pool, yes, all to yourself. It’s unbelievable and looks like the perfect setting for a wedding ceremony, or even to renew your vows.

This is 5 star that looks beyond 5 star.

2. Ayung Resort Ubud

Ubud is all about the tropic and this 5 star resort is no different. Immersed in jungle beauty, offering free daily yoga classes, a stunning outdoor infinity pool and the most beautifully decorated traditional Balinese bedrooms, this is a top choice for couples looking for hotels in Ubud.

They also offer lots of little perks, like, free daily mini bar, free chocolates daily, an espresso machine, free yoga, afternoon tea and much more. It’s thing like that, that truly make a hotel special.

You’re going to feel like a celebrity.

3. Casa Daha Luxury Water Slide Villa

It’s your own private villa with beautiful decorated rooms, a fabulous swimming pool, and a water slide. That’s going to make for some amazing Instagram shots :P

Located in Seminyak, one of my favourite locations for couples, this is a fantastically luxurious villa. Perfect if you want your own privacy. You’ve even got your own rooftop sunlounger area for the ultimate relaxing.

4. Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort

I really have saved the best for last. If you want them amazing sunsets I was talking about in point 1 on the list of romantic things to do in Bali...well..you will get them here, every single night.

Offering breathtaking views, a stunning infinity pool, a gorgeous outdoor hot tub, your own hot tub in your room with amazing views, a complimentary 30-minute photoshoot by resort photographer with a printed keepsake...and SO MUCH MORE.

Ubud is the best location to stay in Bali for couples. Here’s why:

• Ubud is one of the most scenic regions in Bali.
• Ubud accommodation options are very couple-friendly. You’ll find plenty of villas in Ubud with a private pool. The best flower pool and spas in Bali are in Ubud. And overall, the accommodation in Ubud exudes romantic, calming, serene couple vibes – perfect for a honeymoon in Bali.

Fair disclosure : Ubud is not a beach destination but it is still the most romantic area in Bali. The closest beach is about 30-40 minutes away from Ubud. For a beach vacation in Bali, stay at Seminyak or any of the other Bali couple areas mentioned below.

💡 Pro tip : I found Ubud to be the perfect place to stay right after the monsoons in Bali. The rice fields are extra green and the landscape around looks a lot fresher. So even if you’re a beach person, if you’re traveling to Bali between April and June, I urge you to spend a couple of nights in Ubud at any of the best romantic hotels in Bali.

• Click couples pictures at the Ubud Swing
• Stroll through the picturesque and serene Tegallang Rice terraces

• Watch the sunrise together. Trek to the top of Mount Batur – I recommend this guided midnight trek tour. (Only head on this trek if you’re comfortable waking up at 2 am and spending the night trekking to the top. You’ll end up losing most of the day after as you’d want to rest or even get a foot massage. So plan accordingly)
• Shop for handicrafts at the Ubud Art Market
• Go for a hot air balloon ride at sunrise
• Seek blessings at one of the many temples like Saraswati Temple, Ubud Water Temple, Goa Gajah Temple, Pura Pentarah Sasih, Tirta Empul Temple or Taman Ayun Temple. (My favourites are the Taman Ayun Temple and the Saraswati Temple. If you’re not really into temples, you can skip the others!)

• Seminyak’s high-end dining scene offers romantic experiences. The area, just like Ubud, also has some of the best spas. Seminyak also has plush boutiques, vibrant nightlife and cultural experiences – overall, it’s the best place to stay in Bali for young couples.
• Seminyak is pretty centrally located and most touristy areas like Uluwatu, Kuta, and Ubud are about 1-1.5 hours away.

Taking day trips from Candidasa to the touristy areas in Bali like Ubud and Uluwatu is not suggested as the one-way travel time would be over 2-3 hours. If it’s your first time in Bali, I recommend dividing your time in Bali between a more central area and Candidasa.

With 18,330 islands, 6,000 of them inhabited, Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. The island nation is home to 167 active volcanoes, far more than any other country and has some of the largest remaining tracts of tropical forest anywhere in the world.

Indonesia is both a leisure seeker’s dream and an adventurer’s playground. Whether you’re looking to bronze on beautiful beaches, hike in search of endangered orangutan, or snorkel amongst some of the most beautiful coral reefs on Earth, Indonesia has something for everyone.

Explore the last Indonesian city still ruled by an ancient monarchy, follow in the literal footsteps of rare Komodo dragons, and soak in steamy hot springs surrounded by nothing but wild, raw jungle. If you’re looking for magic hidden in the everyday, you’ve found it. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Indonesia.

10. Raja Ampat Islands [SEE MAP]

An island cluster on the northwestern tip of Papua New Guinea, Raja Ampat is one of the most sensational diving destinations in Indonesia. Raja Ampat – which means ‘Four Kings’ – is made up of four major jungle-clad islands surrounded by turquoise lagoons and pearly-white palm-fringed beaches – Waigeo, Salawati, Misool, and Batanta – along with thousands of smaller islands.

The archipelago is celebrated for its rich marine life and underwater coral reefs – home to as many as 75% of all known coral species! With everything from underwater photography to wreck diving, it’s so beautiful, you should definitely invest in an underwater camera.

But the fun isn’t limited to offshore. The islands are also a fantastic bird-watching destination. Pack your binoculars and keep your eyes peeled for eagles swooping overhead and birds of paradise such as the Wilson’s and Cendrawash chirping in the treetops while you trek to waterfalls and mysterious age-old caves.

9. Tanjung Puting National Park [SEE MAP]

Tanjung Puting National Park is one of the world’s natural wonders celebrated for its endangered orangutans – some of the last of these orange, long-haired primates on Earth.

Located in the jungles of Borneo – the third-largest island in the world that’s part of Indonesia, Malaysia and the sultanate of Brunei – the park is home to a variety of wild lowland habitats on a peninsula overlooking the Java Sea. Habitats range from swamp forests to alluvial plains and ocean coastline that provides a home to a diverse array of wildlife – so diverse that it was declared a game reserve before being deemed a national park in 1982.

While orangutans are the obvious draw, you’ll also be able to spot the odd-nosed proboscis monkey, the vulnerable clouded leopard, and over 200 species of birds in the park. Couple these rare animal sightings with fresh jungle air and no light pollution making for excellent star gazing, and the park makes for the perfect adventure. Explore on foot or by klotok boat with a knowledgeable guide – it’s up to you.

The Indonesian island of Flores means ‘Flowers’ in Portuguese, a name that hails from the European missionaries who arrived in the 16th-century. Lying to the east of Sumbawa and to the west of Lembata in Nusa Tenggara, the long island of Flores is famous for its amazing multi-colored crater lakes around Mount Kelimutu, traditional village homestays, and endless opportunities for adventure tourism.

The lakes are truly a sight to behold in every color you can think of – from browns and greens to aqua blue; colors caused by the minerals reacting to the gas of the region’s volcanoes. The Kelimutu three-colored lake is a must-see from the top of the volcano at sunrise.

For those in search of more physical activity, Egon volcano can be reached with a self-guided or guided hike. The north coast has many offshore islands and coral reefs to explore with an exhilarating dive or snorkel. Or you can simply relax and soak your tired muscles in the enchanting hot springs hidden within the jungle – bliss!

7. Torajaland [SEE MAP]

Nicknamed ‘the Land of the Heavenly Kings,’ Torajaland (Tana Toraja) is tucked within the lush central highlands of Indonesia’s Southern Sulawesi, a region that’s dotted with rice fields, limestone peaks, and bamboo-clad hills. Home to the Toraja, a Christian and animist people, Tana Toraja has a fascinating culture that’s remained largely and surprisingly independent from western influence.

Torajans are famous for their massive peaked-roof houses known as tongkonan and spectacular but gruesome funeral rites. After a person’s death, the body is kept – often for several years – until the actual funeral ceremony, which can last for several days. The deceased is then finally buried in a small cave or in a hollow tree. The biggest funerals are usually held in the dry-season months of July and August, but there are funerals year-round.

Exploring Tana Toraja with a local guide is expensive but worth it. They’ll give you a sneaky glimpse into these interesting customs and some of the lesser-known burial sites and village compounds known for their colorful exteriors and boat-shaped rooftops. Visit by yourself, and you’ll still be able to see some of the more famous sites on a trekking trip, but you’ll lack the local insight and insider tips that these tours afford.

6. Bukit Lawang [SEE MAP]

Bukit Lawang is a small village situated at the eastern side of Gunung Leuser National Park about 90 kilometers northwest of Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra. A rehabilitation center for orangutans was founded here in 1973. The main purpose is to preserve the decreasing number of orangutan population due to hunting and deforestation.

The ecotourism here provides jobs and an income for local families living in the village and is a worthy charity to support, if not for the animals alone. The chance to see orangutans in the wild is the major drawcard, but the village is also a worthy stop. It’s built in a sustainable way that takes the surrounding environment into consideration.

Bukit Lawang is a popular destination for guided jungle trekking, acting as the gateway to the Gunung Leuser National Park. Here, you can spot Thomas Leaf Monkeys with their unusual haircuts, walk in the footprints of tigers and elephants, and explore on foot with local bird and nature walks.

Tucked within East Java, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is an ethereal yet barren wonderland of volcanic calderas seemingly continuously surrounded by smoke and clouds. The latter is the highest mountain in the Java region, and one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia.

The draw here is less about wildlife and more about the scenery, yet there are still some interesting animals to be seen, such as Java rusa deer, marbled cats, wild pigs, and the occasional leopard. The best part about a visit to this park is the chance to climb a volcano at sunrise for some of the most exceptional views across this otherworldly landscape.

For those who wish to climb this still-active volcano, a permit from the national park authority is required, and you’ll only be allowed to ascend when the mountain isn’t erupting. Mount Bromo is another prominent landmark in the park, characterized by its often-billowing collapsed crater peeking out above the lush lowland valleys.

An increasingly popular alternative to overly commercial Bali, Lombok and its offshore coral-ringed Gili Islands are tropical paradises. Here, you can enjoy all the appeal of Bali before tourism took over – surfing hotspots, uncrowded beaches , and magical waterfalls tucked within steamy jungles, of which Tiu Kelep Waterfall tops the list without question.

Backpackers head to Lombok in search of adventure. This is likely because its volcano-topped jungle provides for a great trek surrounded by unforgettable scenery. If you’re planning on hiking the Gunung Rinjani volcano and its photogenic crater lake, make sure you’re fit and have booked with a reputable guide – it’s by no means a walk in the park!

There’s also a fantastic nightlife scene when the sun goes down on the satellite islands of Gili, particularly Gili Trawangan. Those in search of culture won’t be disappointed either – the markets in Mataram are a vibrant place to pick up souvenirs while mingling with the locals.

3. Komodo National Park [SEE MAP]

Located in Indonesia’s Nusa Tenggara region, Komodo National Park is famous for one thing and one thing only – its reptilian namesake, the Komodo dragon. Spread across three main islands – Komodo, Rinca, and Padar – as well as a collection of smaller islets, the park provides a sanctuary for this strange looking creature reminiscent of the dinosaurs. It’s the largest living lizard on the planet and can reach a mighty three meters in length! The reptiles roam freely over the islands, and visitors rely on experienced tour guides for sightings and to keep them safe.

Today, the park has expanded to include the conservation of the entire ecosystem both on land and in the ocean. There are several endemic species, such as Rinca rats and fruit bats, as well as wild horses, long-tailed macaques, water buffalo, and several species of dangerous snakes.

But while the terrestrial beings within the Komodo National Park are definitely worth seeing, it’s the marine life that really stands out. The park protects some of the most abundant marine landscapes in the world, part of the Coral Triangle, home to more than 250 species of coral and a plethora of sea sponges and unusual bony fish.

2. Yogyakarta [SEE MAP]

Yogyakarta is a bustling town of some 500,000 people and the most popular tourist destination on Java, due to its proximity to the famous temples of Borobudur and Prambanan. The city itself is a center of education and culture, particularly for Javanese fine arts – from theater to ballet performances, and has a wide range of tourist facilities. It is also the last Indonesian city still ruled by a monarchy.

Yogyakarta lies in one of the most seismically active parts of Java and has thus repeatedly been struck by earthquakes and volcano eruptions. In 2006 an earthquake flattened over 300,000 houses while in 2010 the nearby volcano of Mount Merapi erupted, spewing lava over nearby villages.

Apart from nearby Buddhist and Hindu temples, and the sights in the city itself – small enough that it can be explored on foot – Yogyakarta is also a great base for exploring the surrounding villages locked in time by hardened lava on a Merapi Lava Tour, an activity that’s both sobering and captivating.

One of the most visited and dreamed-of destinations on the modern traveler bucket list, Bali is a kaleidoscope of beautiful beaches, volcanic hills, lush rice paddies, and thousands upon thousands of Indonesian temples. Nicknamed the ‘Island of the Gods,’ Bali is deeply rooted in the spiritual, with endless Hindu temples boasting colorful architecture all of their own – particularly in Ubud , Bali’s spiritual capital. Yet all of Bali’s wonders have not gone unnoticed, and the island can get uncomfortably packed during the tourist season around August. If possible, school holidays are best avoided too.

Kuta is kind of like the Tijuana of Bali. The streets are narrow here and there are hundreds of stalls, selling faux-brand ripoffs, novelty souvenirs. There are plenty of hotels and you are sure to get some great sun time in, but the frantic energy here is only inviting for so long.

10 ways to experience Indonesia on a budget

With a million rupiah currently equal to around US$65, you’ll be transformed into a millionaire the moment you touch down in Indonesia .

If you choose the simple beach-bumming lifestyle, you should budget to spend around a million rupiah a week. Alternatively, live the high life with some of the most luxurious five-star hotels on the planet at low-season prices that are a fraction of the cost elsewhere. 

This guide to daily costs, along with tips on saving money, can help you budget for your visit to Indonesia.

Daily costs

• Local coffee in a streetside  warung (stall): $1
• Cappuccino in a fancy cafe: $2.50
• A hearty plate of fried rice/noodles: $1
• The same meal in a tourist venue: $4
• Cocktail at a happy-hour beach bar: $5
• Beer in a hotel bar: $3
• Glass of house wine at a resort: $6 (sometimes up to $25!)
• 1.5L (50oz) bottle of water: $0.25
• Surfboard rental: $3.50 per session
• 90-minute yoga class: $10 (less if you get a package price )

1. Take your pick from thousands of islands

Bali  is substantially more expensive than neighboring Java , which is in turn slightly more expensive than Sumatra , but the sheer amount of competition vying for the tourist dollars means you can stay very cheaply. In Bali, two people could spend around $20 a day, including a private room, meals and scooter rental.

In general, as you go further to less touristed islands, the cost of living diminishes. Bear in mind, though, that at the extremes of the world’s greatest island nation – in the Alor archipelago, for example, or in the distant Maluku islands – prices are higher due to the transportation costs of getting goods (and vehicles and fuel) to remote regions.

2. Choose the cheapest time to go

October to April is rainy season in Bali and central Indonesia, and the cheapest season to travel here. Unless you are going far off the beaten track – jungle trekking or volcano climbing, for example – this is often a lovely time to be in Indonesia. The rains are usually short and sharp, and interspersed with blissful sunny days (avoid Christmas school holidays and New Year, though.)

3. Find an inexpensive flight

Sign up to Jack’s Flight Club for prompt updates about cheap flights to Jakarta or Bali. Within Indonesia, national carrier Garuda Indonesia , Air Asia or Lion Air link all the other main islands. For a rough idea of flight prices, you can travel one way between Jakarta and Bali from around $40, or from Bali to Labuan Bajo (for access to Komodo) from around $36.

4. Book the best-value accommodations

You can book in advance, of course, but if every dollar counts, consider booking just the first night or two, because the best deals – in hostel-packed Kuta , for example – are often found by asking around. With private rooms available from as low as $2 in some parts of Indonesia, dorms are rare.

It can often be more cost-effective to rent a long-term bungalow or villa through an apartment rental site than to pay for a nightly hotel room. A good air-conditioned double room in Bali will cost $8 a night (breakfast included), but a self-catering bungalow in the central  Ubud area  with its own garden and kitchen might cost around $6 a night if you book a full month.

5. Car and scooter hire is inexpensive

Public transportation in Indonesia is cheap but erratic, so most travelers opt to rent a vehicle. To keep costs at a minimum, consider renting long-term. Scooters are cheap (often around $2–3 a day if you rent for a week or more), but for the sake of safety and security, consider upgrading to a car, which will set you back around $15 per day – which is especially affordable if you're traveling with friends. With petrol costing less than $0.65 per liter ($0.17 per gallon), self-driving in Indonesia is inexpensive.

Driving in Indonesia – especially in Bali with its swarms of motorbikes – is not for the fainthearted, so if you prefer not to drive yourself, you can hire a car and driver for around $30 per day.

6. Use taxicab apps for local rates

Bluebird Taxis has 23,000 vehicles throughout Indonesia, and while convenient, they can be about twice the price of Grab , the Singapore-based company that acquired Uber in Asia.

Before leaving home, download the apps for Grab and Gojek , which claims to have two million motorbike taxis across Southeast Asia. These options mean you'll only pay local rates for transport, so no haggling every time you need to take a car or motorbike taxi, and no need for complex multilingual conversations trying to confirm destinations or give directions.

7. Ferries, buses and trains are cheap but take a long time

Ferries connect some of the islands, and they're inexpensive, though erratic and time-consuming. Take the trip from Labuan Bajo to Bali, for example: the weekly ferry costs less than $20, but it's a 33-hour ride compared with an hour-long flight.

On larger islands, long-distance buses connect all the main cities, but only on Java and parts of Sumatra can you count on getting around by rail. As a general rule, you can figure that a seat on a train will cost you about $1.50 for each hour of travel, and you can book through Kareta Api Indonesia . A bus ticket is usually slightly cheaper and almost always faster than Indonesian trains.

8. Eat local to eat cheap

While Indonesia lacks the culinary variety of much smaller Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore, you can count on finding hearty local food at affordable prices. Unless you are in a tourist center, you can usually find a single-plate meal – normally nasi goreng (fried rice) or mie goreng (fried noodles) – for less than $1. Because they are cooked on the spot, ingredients are usually fresh and frequently delicious.

The West Sumatran city of Padang has exported its fine gastronomic traditions, and you will find Masakan Padang (literally Padang-style cooking) eateries – typically a buffet where you're given a plate of rice and simply point to whatever extras you fancy – in virtually every town throughout the country. You can often grab a veritable feast for around $2; try to pick establishments that seem to have a constant turnaround of diners.

9. Stay off the booze

The best way to keep costs low in Indonesia is simply to avoid alcohol. A bottle of Bintang, the standard local beer, is about $2, a bottle of "cheap" wine starts at around $10, and a bottle of imported gin or whisky will likely set you back $30 or more. Those are supermarket prices – the figures will likely triple in a trendy bar. If you want to party without breaking the bank, look out for the ubiquitous two-for-one sundowner happy-hour deals.

10. Haggling is part of the culture

Haggling is a way of life in Indonesia, and outside of big, fixed-price malls and supermarkets, you will be expected to haggle for most things. Although many travelers are uncomfortable about bargaining for purchases, you’ll soon find that a smile, a joke and a couple of reliable stock phrases can transform a boring shopping trip into an opportunity to bond with local people. At its best, haggling turns a mere business transaction into something far more human.

"Bukan harga bule"  (not foreigner price) is good for a smile.

"Saya sudah bankrupt"  (I’m already bankrupt) guarantees outright belly laughs.

Remember, though, that your haggling should only be driven toward establishing a fair price that is good for both parties. Some travelers pride themselves on their tough haggling skills, believing that a street vendor will always be making a profit regardless. This is not always true: most store-holders will prefer to sell at a loss if it is the only way that they can feed their family that night.
