Ganpati Gadad Trek: An Introduction

Ganpati Gadad means a group of caves dedicated to Lord Ganesha. This trek is famous for its unique features like a jungle trail, an easy hike and, most importantly, caves behind a series of waterfalls during the monsoon season!

Yes, you read that right; it is a sight to behold and should be on every trekker’s list, especially someone who is a beginner.

Many  trekking groups  do not cover this trek, so if you are looking for a hike with less crowd, this should be your go-to option.

  • Best Season:  Monsoon (July – September)
  • Difficulty:  Easy
  • Base Village:  Sonavale

How to reach?

Located in Maharashtra, the base village of the Ganpati Gadad trek is Sonavale (Sonagaon). You can reach this location via public transport and a private vehicle.

Public transport:

Coming from Mumbai, you must take a  train  from Dadar/CST & get down at  Kalyan station . From Kalyan ST Depot, you can take a  local bus  heading towards  Murbad . Then take another local bus from Murbad to  Dhasai .

You can hire a  local rickshaw  or another bus (the frequency of the local buses is significantly less) to the base village from Dhasai.

The entire journey will cost you about I NR 200-350 depending on the mode of transport you opt for.

Private Vehicle:

Distance from  Mumbai  is around  110 kms  & will take approximately  2-2.5 hours  to reach. You can either take the EEH and go from Airoli moving towards Navi Mumbai or go via Thane.  Get Directions .

Distance from Pune  is  160-170  kms and can take  3-4 hours  to reach.

(It is advisable to travel with a trekking group, as travelling to this base village via public transport is a bit more complicated than usual.)

Trek route & Difficulty

Ganpati Gadad

It is a relatively easy trek in terms of difficulty ; it takes around 1.5-2 hours to reach the caves from the base village. The distance is approximately 3-3.5 kms .

The trek is easy in terms of the trail, but you require decent endurance to cover the excursion because the final patch of the hike gets a bit tiring as it involves a steep climb.

Most of the hike is through the dense jungle ; hence, we recommend hiring a guide from the local village, even though the trail is appropriately marked as it becomes easier.

The local guide will not help you with the trail but can also help you make arrangements for breakfast & lunch after the trek.

(It is advisable to have breakfast at Kalyan station, as you have many options available.)

Cave Behind A Waterfall - Ganpati Gadad Trek

Ganpati Gadad Caves are situated in a small village Songaon - Murbad, which is around 4 hrs drive from Mumbai. The base village is surrounded by many historical places such as Dhakoba Fort, Nanheghat, etc. Ganpati Gadad Trek is a fairly simple trek and quite enjoyable and a treat for eyes in monsoon passing through a small waterfall on the route. Unluckily when I did it recently it did not rain much on that day generally, this trek is pleasant but I faced scorching heat.

How to Reach From Mumbai?

Mumbai Local Train: The cheapest and most convenient way to reach Songaon base village of Ganpati Gadag trail for Mumbaikar is through Local Train (Central Railway). Take any Kalyan bound local train to reach Kalyan. Make a quick move to the ST Bus depot which is just a few meters away from the railway station. Take a direct bus to Murbad. It's around 40-50 minutes drive from Kalyan to Murbad. From Murbad bus depot ask for buses going toward Songaon. Let me warn you the frequency would be one in an hour. Alternatively, take a shared taxi to reach Songaon. Approx. an hour ride passing through the lush green field which will make you feel fresh and lively you will make it for the base village Songaon.

Private Car: If comfort is your priority and travelling in a group go for a by car. Songaon is well-connected to Mumbai by roadways it will take around 4 hours. Several ATMs, petrol pumps, hotels, restaurants and banks are located on the route.

Caves Of Lord Ganesha

If you are planning to do a one day trek, would recommend to start early so that we have an entire day to treat yourself. The first half is quite simple because you will be walking across a few fields and cross a couple of streams and then start climbing the trunk mountain. The caves of Ganpati Gadad are visible and you need to climb the trunk which is on the left-hand side of the caves. The climb is too scenic. In front of you is a large rocky mountain in which caves are located and right is the fort of ‘Durg’. If you look more right you can also see ‘Sinhagad’, ‘Gorakshagad’ and ‘Macchindragad’. On left you can see ‘Dhakoba’, ‘Jivdhan’ and ‘Naneghat’. Walking on this path you cross a couple of waterfalls. You cross the second fall and immediately a path goes uphill on left. From here the climb is steep and little slippery. It will take around an hour and 30 minutes for a regular trekker from the base village to reach caves. You have a waterfall near the face of the first cave. The view from the cave is amazing and eye-pleasing. Everything from above looking so beautiful and natural, unpolluted environment make it never to leave kind of situation.

ganpati gadad trek distance

The clear sky view the cave is amazing, but now the challenge is to get downhill which is the steeper slope. Climb down the trunk of the hill will be faster passing through the streams and fields you had crossed earlier in the morning. You will make it back to your base village.

But wait just don't rush to go back to you home. From the top, you will see a lake surrounded by lush greenery and looks amazing. I recommend you to take a stop and enjoy the evening and sunset. It was a great and refreshing trip.

Listen To Me:

- Carry some ready to eat food, atleast 2 litres of water and mat/bedsheet to rest.

- Talk to the native villagers gently and give respect to them. Cause you are their guests.

- Carry an Id proof.

- You won't find any fancy hotel or homestay place in the base village. So it advisable to take a local villager as a guide and pay him for your breakfast and lunch and also you can leave your bag at their place and carry only must required things.

- The nearby proper market is at Dhasai Village which is around 10kms from the base village.

Ganpati Gadad Trek Level: Easy to Moderate.

Base Village: Songaon

Altitude: 3000ft ASL

Time Required: 4 hours round way.

Region: Murbad.

  • Duration: 1 day
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Base: Sonavale Village

If you are someone who is in love with caves and enjoys a bird’s eye view of nature from the top of the caves, the Ganpati Gadad trek is designed just for you.

Ganpati Gadad is a group of 6 to 7 near Dhasai. The trek to these caves is fair with medium endurance during the monsoons. Beginners can easily join the trek and have a great time enjoying what nature has to provide in the form of fresh air and scenic beauty. The Ganpati Gadad caves trek will also make you encounter small waterfalls that fall over the caves like a thin sheet of white curtains.

As the caves are formed in the rocks surrounded by different waterfalls, it adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the region and makes for a great nature walk . The majestic and unique look of the caves makes them recognizable even from a distance as rectangular patches between rocks. Trekkers and hikers prefer visiting these caves in monsoon as they surround themselves with greenery, adding to their existing beauty.

The journey to these caves is what makes the Ganpati Gadad trek memorable. The trekkers walk through fogged waterfalls, getting slightly drenched in the fresh and moist air around them. If you love long calming walks in the lap of nature, this trek is definitely going to be no less than a spiritual experience!

The trek starts from a lush green forest up to the beautifully carved caves surrounded by waterfalls. People from across the state and country come to visit the caves to enjoy the look of the drenched green valleys, light hovering clouds, cool winds, and picturesque waterfalls. While trekking, you would encounter a few fields and gorgeous streams to give you the perfect start to a memorable journey.

The front view of the destination would be that of a fort names Durg. On the right-hand side, you will witness the beautiful view of Siddhagad, Gorakhgad, and Machindragad. On your left, you will have “Dhakoba”, “Jivdhan”, and “Naneghat”.

The trek will take place during the day so that you can enjoy the view of the caves and everything you encounter on your way. The one-day trek is bound to take away all your stress and prepare you for the week to come once you are back to the hustling of the city.

The Ganpati Gadad caves trek is for everyone. You need not be a seasoned trekker or need any experience in rock-climbing mountaineering to go on this trek. All you need to do is show up and be ready for what nature has in store for you!

This trek is an ideal option for people living in and around Mumbai and Pune. The caves are not more than 2 hours away from Mumbai and 2.3 hours away from Pune.
