Derry Girls Jamie-Lee and Comedian Patrick Kielty Among Stars to Praise Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland was in the spotlight last night tonight (Nov 25) as homegrown talent Jamie-Lee O'Donnell and Patrick Kielty heaped praise upon their homeland in a virtual event, hosted live from the world-leading visitor attraction, Titanic Belfast

Northern Ireland Travel News was one of a number of media outlets who were treated to a virtual evening with some of Northern Irelands top home-grown talent.

While the doors are currently closed, viewers were brought on a virtual tour through some of Northern Ireland’s leading tourism venues – firstly transported from their armchairs to the surroundings of Hillsborough Castle and Gardens to explore the stand-out food and drink that is making Northern Ireland a must-visit destination.

Simon Dougan MBE, a leading chef and Managing Director of Yellow Door was joined by NI Food ambassador, chef and radio broadcaster Paula McIntyre MBE for a walk through of some of Northern Ireland’s finest local producers and ingredients.

Musical recitals were performed against the backdrop of the beautifully decorated Ulster Folk Museum in Holywood. A moving performance featured ROE, the 19-year-old multi-instrumentalist from Derry~Londonderry, who has performed at Glastonbury, alongside Belfast-born Neil Martin, a composer whose work has been performed across the world from Ground Zero to The Royal Albert Hall. Both artists were involved in the recently launched ‘Folk Park Live’ at The Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh, a new tourism initiative which takes visitors through a 300-year musical journey.

The atmospheric Titanic Belfast was also the location for a performance from Ryan McMullan. The Portaferry native, who in recent times has toured with Ed Sheeran and Snow Patrol, gave a spine-tingling version of ‘Belfast City’.

Comedian Patrick Kielty and Derry Girls’ Jamie-Lee O’Donnell also joined hosts, Holly Hamilton and Connor Phillips, to explore just what makes ‘home’ so special to them.

Speaking about his love for his homeland and in particular the Mourne area, Patrick admitted that he had yet to conquer all seven peaks to be able to call himself “a proper Mourne man”. He said: “There are seven peaks, and if you are a fell runner like my brother, you do the seven peaks in one day, and if you want to try that you’re a good ‘un. I have done about four of them, so i haven’t done them all, but i think if you’re calling yourself a proper Mournes man you have to have them all done, so I’ve got a few more to do.”

When asked what she loved most about Northern Ireland, Derry Girls’ star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell said that the people were real the pride of this little part of the world.

“I think that there’s such a warmth to the people here, and it’s almost like a familiarity with people here. People speak to each other as if we are all sort of related. When tourists come in to visit Northern Ireland they always remark on the friendliness and how welcoming people are and i think that’s definitely true, even if you live here you get that vibe as well.

Reminiscing on her childhood in Derry~Londonderry where she grew up, Jamie-Lee said: “Where i grew up there was always forests and I was always running about in the summer. It always seemed like it was always sunny, which it probably wasn’t.”

The event was brought to a close against the backdrop of The MAC, the award-winning cultural venue in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter and part of Northern Ireland’s internationally renowned eclectic arts scene, where Belfast-born West End singer Rachel Tucker performed within the empty theatre.

The virtual event brought to life the Embrace a Giant Spirit brand. Internationally renowned Belfast born artist, Colin Davidson, who was involved in the creation and design of the brand also participated in the virtual event, showcasing his fantastic artistic talent and speaking about his love for our little corner of the world being the inspiration behind some of his works.

Tourism NI, Director of Marketing, Naomi Waite said: “This virtual event has brought to life some of the very best of Northern Ireland. It paid tribute to our wonderful venues and tourism attractions, as well as our outstanding food and drink and the giant spirit of our people. We are grateful to journalists for their support at this event which recognised the resilience of our people. While things certainly look different at the moment, one thing that won’t change is the giant welcome you will receive from us when it is safe to do so.”

Tourism NI is reminding people that while our tourism providers are adhering to restrictions at present it is still possible to book ahead so you can enjoy the anticipation of taking a small step to a giant adventure at a later date. Discover Northern Ireland has a range of experiences that will allow you to truly Embrace our Giant Spirit.

Patrick Kielty: Everything you need to know about the Northern Irish comedian and Late Late Show host

He will sit in the iconic Late Late hosting seat for the first time on September 15

  • 11:24, 15 SEP 2023

The Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty

Patrick Kielty is one of the biggest names in comedy and TV to come from Northern Ireland.

Now he is heading for one of the most famous roles on Irish screens - hosting The Late Late Show.

From having hosted major reality shows such as Love Island to touring across the UK with his numerous comedy shows, the Co Down man is hailed as one of NI's national treasures.

With a successful career spanning almost three decades, Patrick Kielty continues to keep us entertained and will no doubt make a serious impression when he hosts his first Late Late show on September 18.

Here is what you need to know about the Northern Irish comedian and TV presenter:

Where is Patrick Kielty from?

Comedian Patrick Kielty has shared a photograph of himself as a young boy as applications for The Late Late Toy Show 2023 open

Patrick was born in County Down, Northern Ireland, and grew up in the village of Dundrum.

The 52-year-old is one of three sons born to the businessman John "Jack" Kielty.

He attended St Patrick's Grammar School in Downpatrick where his performing career is said to have begun.

As a teenager, he was a talented Gaelic footballer and was a member of the Down GAA minor football team and was the substitute goalkeeper when they won the 1987 All Ireland Minor Football Championship.

Who was Patrick Kielty's father?

Jack Kielty was only 44 years old when he was shot dead on January 25 1988 by loyalist paramilitaries.

He was only 16 when he was killed and speaking to RTE host Ryan Tubridy, he said: "I was 16 and it was my brother's 18 birthday.

"Everybody said they were sorry, everybody hugged us but nobody said they couldn't believe it. That is how things were up there, that was the normality of it."

In 2018, he presented the documentary My Dad, The Peace Deal And Me for the channel, which coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

It explored the state of Northern Ireland two decades on from the Agreement and Kielty discussed the killing of his father and the effect it had on him.

How did Patrick Kielty become a comedian?

While he was still a psychology student at Queen's University, Patrick appeared in a show called "The Empire Laughs Back", a show staged in The Empire Music Hall started by him and fellow student Jackie Hamilton.

In 1993, he presented the show SUS on UTV and later became the warm-up act for a BBC NI show called Anderson on the Box.

Four years later he set up the Belfast-based TV production company Green Inc with TV director Stephen Stewart, making shows such as The Afternoon Show, Patrick Kielty Almost Live and Ask Rhod Gilbert.

Who is Patrick Kielty's wife?

Patrick Kielty and Cat Deeley

Patrick married TV presenter Cat Deeley in Rome in September 2012.

Their first son, Milo, was born in January 2016, and a second, James Patrick, in June 2018.

He has revealed how he made her "fall off her chair" as he wooed her.

Patrick told Loose Women that after being friends for many years things changed between the pair.

"There was a moment, we always used to keep in contact. It was her birthday and she was in Beverley Hills and I was in Dundrum. Obviously, LA is eight hours behind, so it was around tea time with her, I texted her 'Happy Birthday' from a little Irish pub.

"It was around two o'clock in the morning and closing time. She said, 'It's just a shame you're not in LA, because I'm having a lunch tomorrow' and I said 'I'll be there'.

"So I got up at five jumped on a six o'clock flight from Ireland and got into Heathrow at seven, then jumped on a twenty to ten flight got in at quarter past one, and walked into the Beverley Hills Hotel and I said 'Hi' and she fell off the chair and we've been together ever since."

What has Patrick Kielty presented?

Patrick Kielty will step into the Late Late presenter role for the new season

From 2001 to 2003, he hosted 14 episodes of the comedy game show Stupid Punts and also presented a series of After The Break.

He continued to appear on national television shows such as the BBC's Fame Academy, Comic Relief Does Fame Academy and Love Island for ITV in both 2005 and 2006.

He co-presented This Morning, alongside Kate Thornton for one episode and Emma Willis for three episodes in 2012 and in 2014 and 2015, guest hosted a few episodes of The One Show.

He then returned to BBC Northern Ireland to present programmes, including the comedy panel game show Bad Language and Debatable for BBC 2.

In 2023, he took over the role as host of RTÉ's The Late Late Show from Ryan Tuberty and is the first host to not hail from the Republic of Ireland.

Paddy Kielty's 'amazing' Late Late Toy Show breaks digital viewing record

RTÉ’s Late Late Toy Show has raised over €3.6 million for children's charities across Ireland while setting a new record for digital views.

The annual festive broadcast was screened on Friday evening, with over 1.7 million viewers watching live and on catch-up across the weekend.

RTÉ Player streams in the north more than doubled compared to last year, it was confirmed, while UK streams of the show rose from around 33,000 last year to over 65,000.

Hosted for the first time by Co Down's Patrick Kielty, the Toy Show featured Co Derry girl Tessa Evans (10), who joined fellow 'superfans' of Matilda the Musical in performing a song from the West End show and 2022 movie.

Tessa was overjoyed when she and fellow performers met Matilda star Alisha Weir in a surprise appearance.

The Maghera schoolgirl's family have spoken of their pride over the youngster - who was born without a nose due to having Bosma Arhinia Microphthalmia syndrome - representing children with a facial difference on the show.

RTÉ confirmed the broadcast was its most-watched show of the year, with viewers tuning in from an "unprecedented" 147 countries.

Streams of the show were recorded for the first time in countries including Iraq, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan.

Over €3.6 million was raised for the annual Toy Show Appeal, and the sum will be distributed to children's organisations through the Community Foundation Ireland charity.

Meanwhile, the show also racked up 26.2 million video views and 2.2 million interactions on social media over the weekend.

Patrick Kielty, who replaced Ryan Tubridy as Late Late Show host in September, said he was "still coming back down to earth from an amazing night" after presenting his first Toy Show.

"I want to express huge thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s Late Late Toy Show so special," he said.

"To all of you who watched, to the brilliant kids who brought their magic and put a giant smile on all of our faces. And, to every last one of you who gave so generously to our Toy Show Appeal – you have made a massive difference to so many children’s lives – thank you! Being part of it is something I will never forget – a forever night."

RTÉ's head of entertainment, Alan Tyler, said: ""We are delighted that Patrick's first Late Late Toy show has connected so well with the audience. It is a testament to the hard work of the whole team who put together a truly unique and special show."

Since the first Toy Show Appeal in 2020, the charity campaign has raised over €21 million.

Chief executive of Community Foundation Ireland, Denise Charlton, said: “The extraordinary generosity of Toy Show viewers will ensure the magic continues long after the Christmas decorations come down. Hundreds of thousands of children will have their lives transformed. There will be more essential supports including food, clothing, therapy as well as health and wellbeing services."

Patrick Kielty and Mary Robinson to receive honorary degrees

B roadcaster Patrick Kielty and former Irish President Mary Robinson are set to receive honorary doctorates from Ulster University this summer.

They are among seven people being recognised by the university.

Author and artist Oliver Jeffers who grew up in Northern Ireland, is also being honoured, as is veteran journalist Eamonn Mallie.

Shankill Women's Centre CEO Betty Carlisle, Sister Nuala Kelly who helped transform St Louise's College in west Belfast, and Glamour magazine's editor-in-chief Samantha Barry, originally from Cork, will also be recognised.

Patrick Kielty took over as host of Irish broadcaster RTÉ's The Late Late Show last year.

He started out at a Belfast comedy club before gaining success as a presenter on Love Island, This Morning and BBC Radio 4's The News Quiz as well as other comedy and theatre shows.

Mary Robinson was the first female President of Ireland and served in the role between 1990 and 1997.

She was also the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and is currently chair of The Elders, a body of independent global leaders working together for peace, justice, human rights and a sustainable planet.

Oliver Jeffers is renowned for a number of children's books which have been translated into more than 30 languages.

Working with Studio AKA, his book, Lost and Found, was developed into an animated short film, and received a number of awards including a Bafta.

Originally from south Armagh, Eamonn Mallie is a former reporter and political correspondent with Downtown Radio and is recognised for his significant contribution to journalism and broadcasting.

He has co-authored nine books covering politics, art, and poetry and has interviewed various leading political figures.

'Outstanding contribution'

Betty Carlisle will be recognised for her "outstanding contribution" to promoting shared education and empowering women from disadvantaged and deprived areas of Northern Ireland.

Sister Nuala Kelly will be recognised for her "outstanding commitment" in serving the community.

Samantha Barry is now based in New York where she is Glamour's global editorial director for the Americas.

She was previously global head of social media at CNN and is being honoured for her achievements in journalism and using her platform to empower women and girls.

'Great talent, creativity and integrity'

Ulster University vice-chancellor Professor Paul Bartholomew said the university's aim is to celebrate "inspirational local people making a global impact".

"Graduation is a special time of year as we celebrate our outstanding graduates as they come together with friends and family to mark their wonderful achievements," he said.

"We are committed to nurturing the next generation of leaders who will go on to make a genuine difference in their communities and respective professions in the years that follow their time at Ulster University.

"With that future in mind, it is a joy to celebrate the work of those inspirational and acclaimed local faces already making a global impact, and we are thrilled to bestow these honorary doctorates.

"These individuals are leaders in their fields and demonstrate great talent, creativity and integrity."

The honorary doctorates will be conferred during summer graduations which take place from 1 July to 9 July in Belfast, Coleraine and Londonderry.

RTE Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty jokingly walked off stage on Friday night's show during an interview with Derry Girls actress Nicola Coughlin and Spice Girls star Mel B.

Mel B had been interviewed on her own first before Patrick introduced Nicola, who is not only the star of Derry Girls, Bridgerton and Barbie, but is also a major Spice Girls fan, to the studio audience.

It was clear that Nicola and Mel were fans of each other and as Mel B probed the Galway native with questions about her next project, Patrick walked away from his desk as if to suggest he wasn't needed for the chat.

The Late Late Show Twitter account even joked that Mel B was "guest host" for the night.

Viewers loved the interaction between Mel B and Nicola and took to social media to praise both. Patrick also played an adorable clip of Nicola impersonating the Spice Girls as a child.

One wrote: "Great show so far. Loving the fandom between Nicola and Mel B."

Another added: "I am loving how into this Mel B is; she's like a cheerleader for Nicola."

TV presenter Patrick Kielty sends message of hope to Israel and Palestine

TV presenter Patrick Kielty sends message of hope to Israel and Palestine

Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty has sent a message of hope to families who are suffering in Israel and Palestine.

The presenter from Co Down, whose father was shot dead by the Ulster Freedom Fighters during The Troubles in Northern Ireland, recalled his experience of growing up in a conflict zone was that “the hurt and the pain on both sides was sadly the same”.

However, he said the people of Ireland are “living our own miracle” and he hoped for those suffering during the Israel-Hamas conflict “your miracle comes soon”.

“We are currently living in our own miracle” #LateLate pic.twitter.com/yOLyhVd8iM — The Late Late Show (@RTELateLateShow) October 14, 2023

As he closed Friday night’s episode on RTE, the Irish national broadcaster, Kielty said: “Before we go, I would just like to say that so many of us here on the Late Late Show want to send our love to the family of Kim Damti and all the families whose lives this week have been ripped apart in Israel and Palestine.

“There are no words that will even touch the sides on the pain and the loss and the ongoing horror that has been felt by so many tonight.

“But as someone who grew up during a conflict where the rights and wrongs of politics were always writ large, one common truth was the hurt and the pain on both sides was sadly the same.

“We all shared something, but we just didn’t realise it at the time – and there were days when we thought it would never end.”

Kielty continued: “Tonight, there are many parents and children in Israel and in Gaza who also think this will never end and are praying for a miracle to make it stop.

“In the midst of despair, miracles are hard to believe in but it’s worth remembering that we are currently living our own miracle on this island because we are living in peace.

“And for all those in Israel and Palestine tonight, it mightn’t seem like it but there is always hope and we hope that your miracle comes soon.”

On Wednesday, 22-year-old Irish-Israeli citizen Ms Damti was confirmed dead after the Hamas attacks in Israel.

She had been attending a music festival near the Gaza border on Saturday when Hamas militants launched a surprise attack.

Palestinians are currently struggling to flee from areas of Gaza targeted by the Israeli military after power and water supplies to the region were stopped ahead of an expected land offensive.

Kielty has presented documentaries about The Troubles, including the BBC programme My Dad, The Peace Deal And Me, about his father’s death at the hands of paramilitary gunmen.

The comedian was 16 when Jack Kielty was shot dead.

The programme coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement and saw Kielty return to his home town of Dundrum to see if the historic peace deal has delivered on its pledge to create a new Northern Ireland.

It was nominated for a Bafta for best single documentary and he was named UK documentary host of the year at the 2018 Grierson Awards.

His film Patrick Kielty: 100 Years Of Union, which explored how the trauma of the past is shaping the future of Northern Ireland during its centenary year, also won an RTS award.
