WTA Qatar Open 2024: Women's draw, schedule, players, prize money breakdown and more

The top players in the women's draw will now compete at the Qatar Open 2024, which is the first WTA 1000 tournament of the year.

After a subpar performance at the Australian Open, World No. 1 Iga Swiatek will hope to set things straight in Doha after dominating the event for the past two years. She is the defending champion and will be vying for her third consecutive title in the Gulf country.

Giving her company will be Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff and Ons Jabeur, who are among the top five seeds at the event. Gauff has made a near-perfect start to the new calendar year, chalking up 10 wins from 11 matches and a title-winning run at the ASB Classic in Auckland. She also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open, but faced stiff competition from World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, who eventually captured the crown in Melbourne. Gauff will be hoping to continue her rich vein of form in Doha.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova and Australian Open 2024 finalist Qinwen Zheng will also feature at the Qatar Open. Fans can expect fireworks and a dazzling event in Doha, as players bring their unique skill sets to the table and battle it out for the title.

What is the Qatar Open 2024?

The Qatar Open 2024 is a women's tennis tournament held in Doha, played on an outdoor hardcourt surface. It is one of two WTA 1000 events being held this month, alongside the Dubai Tennis Championships.

This will be the 22nd edition of the Qatar Open and tennis legends such as Martina Hingis , Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova have held the title in the past. Belarusian veteran Victoria Azarenka has also registered back-to-back title-wins in Doha, during her peak form in 2012 and 2013.

The WTA 1000 Qatar Open will be played at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha.

The tournament begins on Sunday, February 13, 2024. The finals of the women's singles and doubles draws are to be held on February 17, 2024.

After an exhilarating fortnight at the Australian Open, top players such as Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Qinwen Zheng will gear up for the Qatar Open 2024.

Elena Rybakina is currently competing at the Abu Dhabi Open and has reached the semifinals. She is scheduled to enter Doha next and fight for the title against the big guns.

Among others, Maria Sakkari, Jelena Ostapenko and Qinwen Zheng will feature at the Qatar Open. Magdalena Frech, Kamilla Rakhimova and Italian sensation Martina Trevisan are currently competing in the qualifiers to secure a ticket to the main draw.

While former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka will make her presence felt and return to the competition this year, Aryna Sabalenka misses out due to a schedule change and Jessica Pegula , the reigning doubles champion, won't be there as well due to injury.

By Gregor Brown in Doha, Qatar

Qatar welcomes the inaugural Ladies' Tour of Qatar on the heels of the successful men's stage race. The three-stage women's event, February 8 to 10, has attracted some of the sports top riders to challenge for the overall leader's golden jersey.

"We believe in sports as a way to keep well physically and mentally, and cycling is something that everyone can practice. This race is a continuation of the [men's] Tour of Qatar; we have gained experience in race organisation that we've applied to the women's event," said President of the Qatar Cycling Federation, Sheikh Khalid Bin Ali Bin Abdullah Al Thani.

The stages are each around 100 kilometres long and each is based near the country's capital of Doha. Based on the results of the men's race this last week, the women's races will be decided in sprints from those strong enough to deal with the crosswinds and intense racing conditions.

There will be 15 teams of six riders for the 2009 edition. Team Columbia will be a strong force. It will work for its sprinter Emilia Fahlin. She will go head-to-head with the likes of Team Italy's Giorgia Bronzini, Lotto's Rochelle Gilmore, Cervélo's Kirsten Wild and Team Australia's Kirsty Broun.

Team USA brings Geelong World Cup winner Katheryn Mattis. Qatar will give fans a good indicator of her form for 2009 and if she recovered from the two broken collarbones that plagued her 2008 season. US champion Brooke Miller and Katharine Carroll are also strong contenders for sprint victories.

Like the men's race last week, there will be three classification jerseys awarded each day. Gold for the overall classification, silver for the leader in the points classification and blue for best young rider (under 25).

The stages total 313 kilometres. Stage one is 94 kilometres from Doha to Al Khor and back, stage two travels 110 kilometres from Doha to Al Shahaniyah and stage three starts in Al Shahaniyah and ends 109 kilometres later in Al Khor.

Simone Biles leads the most experienced U.S. women's gymnastics team ever into the Olympics

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team is well positioned to win the Olympic team gold medal not solely because of talent but also because of experience.

Four of the five women suiting up this month were members of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic team. With two all-around Olympic champions and four Olympic medalists, the 2024 Paris group is the most experienced and most decorated in U.S. history.

Simone Biles, with 37 Olympic and world championship medals, is the headliner. Her Olympic medal collection consists of two bronzes, one silver and four golds, including the most coveted hardware in the sport: the Olympic all-around gold medal.

She is tied with Shannon Miller for the most Olympic medals for U.S. gymnasts, a record she is likely to break in Paris as the reigning world champion in the all-around, beam, floor and team events.

Biles will be joined in Paris by reigning Olympic all-around champion Suni Lee, Olympic silver medalist Jordan Chiles, Olympic gold medalist Jade Carey and first-year senior Hezly Rivera .

Biles called the coming Olympics a “redemption tour” for the Tokyo returners.

“I feel like we all have more to give and our Tokyo performances weren’t the best,” Biles said Sunday at the Olympic trials in Minneapolis. “We weren’t under the best circumstances, either, but I feel like we have a lot of weight on our shoulders to go out there and prove that we’re better athletes.”

Team USA settled for the silver medal in the team event in Tokyo after a few uncharacteristic mistakes. Chiles fell on floor exercise, and Biles got lost in the air on her vault before a case of the “twisties” forced her to withdraw from the competition.

“We’re more mature, we’re smarter, and we’re more consistent,” Biles said this week.

With the Russian gymnasts banned from participating in Paris because of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Brazilian and Chinese teams are expected to be the U.S. women's biggest rivals in the team competition.

The Brazilian team is also flush with Olympic experience and hardware, with Rebeca Andrade having made her debut in Rio like Biles. She became the first Brazilian to claim an Olympic medal in women's artistic gymnastics, winning silver in the all-around and gold on vault in Tokyo.

Brazil is eyeing its first Olympic team medal after it won its first world medal as a team last year.

  • Hezly Rivera joins veterans on U.S. women's gymnastics squad headed to Paris
  • Simone Biles qualifies for her third Olympics as Hezly Rivera snags fifth spot on the team

Aside from Biles, the U.S. is loaded with veteran talent. Lee is a star on the uneven bars, where she is the reigning Olympic bronze medalist. Including the silver medal she helped Team USA win in the team final, she won three medals in Tokyo, one of each color.

“I want to make all-around finals,” Lee said Sunday. “I want to be in the top three for the bars final, and I really want a beam gold.”

“I feel like I always make the final and then I always mess up, it’s so annoying,” she said laughing.

She made the beam final at the Tokyo Games and has Olympic medal potential in that event. Her 14.600 beam score at the Core Hydration Classic is among the highest scores in the world this year.

Carey, the reigning Olympic floor champion, narrowly missed the podium on vault in Tokyo. She qualified in second place behind Biles heading into the vault final but tripped on the runway during finals, a fluke incident that she has credited with motivating her Olympic comeback.

“A lot of us will say we want redemption and we all had something that didn’t go our way,” Carey said after she made her second Olympic team.

As it was with the rest of the Tokyo Olympians, her experience was hampered by a postponement and other Covi d-related restrictions . She is looking forward to a more immersive Olympic environment in Paris.

“Having a normal experience, having our families there, meeting other athletes, that’s something I’m really looking forward to,” Carey said.

Despite Rivera’s relative inexperience, she expressed confidence in her teammates to guide her through the Olympic spotlight.

“They’ve already been through it, they’ve been through the journey, they’ve been to the Olympic Games, they’ve been through the pressure,” Rivera, 16, said Sunday. “I think they’ll be able to mentor me and help me so much, not just during the competition but throughout the whole process of training.”

Biles, 27, will be the oldest female American gymnast to compete at the Olympics in 72 years.

All but one of the team members are in their 20s, a marked departure from the previous gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic gymnastics teams. This year’s team is nearly six years older than the “Fierce Five” from the London 2012 Olympics, whose average age was 16.4.

That team, as well as the 2008 Olympic team, was made up of first-time Olympians.

The 2016 Rio Olympic team had two Olympic returners, Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas. In Tokyo, Biles was the only athlete on the team who had previously competed at the Olympics.

Raisman, who was 22 during the Rio Games, was referred to as the "grandmother" by her teammates at the time.

"I definitely have to apologize to Aly for calling her ‘Grandma,’ because I feel like I’m way older now," Biles said. "Recovery I just have to take a little more seriously. Back in Rio, I could do anything. ... I was just like a little hamster on a wheel, always running."

International Golf Federation announces fields for the men’s and women’s Olympic golf competitions at Paris 2024

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND (Tuesday, 9 July 2024) – The International Golf Federation (IGF) today announced the fields for the men’s and women’s Olympic golf competitions at Paris 2024. The men’s Olympic golf competition will take place 1-4 August, while the women will compete 7-10 August. The Olympic golf competitions will be contested at Le Golf National, which annually hosts the FedEx Open de France on the DP World Tour and was the site of the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Once the Olympic Golf Rankings were finalized on 18 June and 25 June for the men’s and women’s Olympic golf competitions, respectively, each National Olympic Committee (NOC) then began the process of confirming their qualifiers for the competitions by 27 June (5 p.m. US Eastern Time). Past this deadline, all unused quota places were then reallocated as per the Qualification System for golf.

With 32 countries represented in the men’s Olympic golf competition and 33 in the women’s field, the composition of the Olympic fields highlights the broad global interest in golf and the opportunity to reach new audiences across all six different continents. Golf is looking to continue building upon the success of the previous two Olympic golf competitions at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Paris 2024 will mark the fifth occasion in which golf has been featured as an Olympic sport, and just the third time since 1904.

In total, 38 different NOCs will be represented across both the men’s and women’s Olympic golf competitions, with the United States of America sending the most athletes: seven (four men, three women). The following is the full list of NOCs represented in the fields for the men’s and women’s Olympic golf competitions: Australia, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, United States of America.

In the  men’s field , 10 of the top 15 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, as of this week, are competing in the Olympic golf competition, including all of the top-5 ranked players. In the  women’s field , all 15 of the top-15 ranked women in the Rolex Rankings, as of this week, are competing in the Olympic golf competition.

The Taliban tell the West to look past harsh edicts on Afghan women and girls and build ties

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The Taliban on Sunday told the West to look past the measures they have imposed on Afghan women and girls for the sake of improving foreign relations.

Their chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the Taliban uphold certain religious and cultural values and public aspirations that “must be acknowledged” to facilitate progressive bilateral relations rather than encountering disputes and stagnation.

Mujahid made his demand on the opening day of a United Nations-led meeting in Qatar on increasing engagement with Afghanistan and to have a more coordinated response to the country’s issues.

It’s the third such U.N.-sponsored gathering in Doha. The Taliban were not invited to the first meeting, and U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said they set unacceptable conditions for attending the second one in February, including demands that Afghan civil society members be excluded from the talks and that the Taliban be treated as the country’s legitimate rulers.

Afghan women have been excluded from the current Doha meeting.

No country officially recognizes the Taliban and the U.N. has said that recognition remains almost impossible while bans on female education and employment remain.

But Mujahid struck a defiant note Sunday, saying that the political understanding between the Taliban and other nations was steadily improving .

He said Kazakhstan had removed the Taliban from its list of prohibited groups and that Russia would undertake a similar measure in the near future. Mujahid, who is meeting special envoys on the sidelines, said earlier that Saudi Arabia expressed its intention to reopen its embassy in Kabul.

The relationships with regional countries demonstrated that the Taliban have the commitment and capacity to establish and maintain relations, Mujahid said in his remarks.

“I do not deny that some countries may have problems with some measures of the Islamic Emirate,” Mujahid said in his speech. “I think that policy differences amid states are natural, and it is the duty of experienced diplomats to find ways of interaction and understanding rather than confrontation.”

Such differences should not escalate to the extent that powerful countries used their leverage to impose security, political, and economic pressures that affected Afghanistan in a significant way. He did not mention the harsh edicts on women and girls that have caused global outrage, but has previously referred to them as an “internal matter.” The Taliban have rejected criticism of their treatment of Afghan women and girls, calling it interference .

“Consequently, other nations, particularly Western countries, can remove the obstacles hindering the development of relations with the Afghan government,” said Mujahid.

The decision to exclude Afghan women from the meeting has drawn rebukes from rights groups, the U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan Richard Bennett , and Nobel laureate Malala Yousufzai.

Yousufzai , who was shot by a Taliban gunman for campaigning for girls’ education, wrote on social media platform X last Thursday that she spoke to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about the Doha meeting.

She said she was “alarmed and disappointed” that the Taliban were invited to meet U.N. special envoys while Afghan women and rights defenders were excluded from the main conversation.

Convening the meeting without Afghan women sent “all the wrong” signals that the world was willing to accommodate the Taliban’s demands.

She added that what the Taliban were doing in Afghanistan amounted to gender apartheid .

Earlier, the United Nations’ top official in Afghanistan, Roza Otunbayeva, defended the failure to include Afghan women in the meeting in Doha, insisting that demands for women’s rights are certain to be raised.
