Tour of Qatar

The annual Tour of Qatar is a professional stage road race founded in 2002. The Women’s stages were introduced in 2009 and the race forms part of the UCI Asia Tour. Now in its fifth year, the Ladies Tour of Qatar is considered a key race on the professional women’s circuit.

2013 saw the race expand, providing an extra stage to the Ladies tour, making it a four stage race instead of three. There 15 teams of six riders taking part. The race is organised by the Qatar Cycling federation and the race has become notorious for its flat roads suitable for sprint finishes providing some challenging racing. Stage one of the 2013 race was 60.3 miles with Chloe Hosking taking the win in the opening stage. Stage two was 59.7 miles, seeing Kirsten Wild take the stage win. Stage three was 69.9 miles, with Kirsten Wild taking another win. And the Final stage was 53.7 miles – Wild took another stage win, and the win overall. The race was broadcast live on Al Jazeera TV, to a Worldwide audience.

The race has grown in size and popularity over the past five years with some of the biggest names in women’s cycling opting to compete in such a prestigious event. Many nationalities compete, all hoping to wear the golden jersey worn by the leader of the general classification.

Qterminals qatar classic: preview & how to watch live.

women's tour qatar

The 2023-24 PSA World Tour continues this weekend with the QTerminals Qatar Classic. The tournament is the second PSA Platinum event of the season after the Paris Squash finished last week.

The competition commences with the women’s first round on Saturday September 9 and action continues until the men’s final on Saturday September 16. Squash fans can watch all of the action on SQUASHTV , while the semis and finals will also be shown by PSA’s broadcast partners .

2023 is the 19th time the event has been held since its re-establishment in 2001, with the world’s best players heading to the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha.

With play kicking off tomorrow, we’ve had a look at the players to watch during the week ahead.

Women’s Draw

Nouran Gohar

Nouran Gohar at the World Tour Finals.

Top seed Nouran Gohar started her season off by reaching the final of the Paris Squash 2023.

Despite not dropping a game before the final, Gohar fell just short of the mark as she was beaten 3-1 by fellow Egyptian Nour El Sherbini – a defeat which saw her lose her status as the World No.1.

Gohar reached the quarter-finals the last time the Qatar Classic had a women’s draw, being knocked out by Laura Massaro, who went on to win the title eight years ago.

The Egyptian will have a chance to claim her first title of the season as she starts her campaign against either Ineta Mackevica or Emily Whitlock in round two. American duo Olivia Fiechter and Amanda Sobhy are also in Gohar’s path to the final, while she is seeded to play World No.3 Hania El Hammamy in the last four.

Gohar will be eyeing up a return to World No.1 and can reclaim top spot if she wins the event or if she reaches the final and El Sherbini goes out in the semis or earlier.

Nour El Sherbini

women's tour qatar

Newly-crowned World No.1 El Sherbini got her hands on the Paris Squash title last week as well as top spot after vanquishing Gohar.

El Sherbini finished as runner-up in the 2015 Qatar Classic and like Gohar, fell to England’s Massaro.

The 27-year-old will face the winner of Alexandra Fuller and Zeina Zein in round two. From there, she is predicted to play Rowan Elaraby, Nele Gilis and Joelle King en route to the final as she aims to win the first Qatar Classic title for eight years.

Hania El Hammamy

women's tour qatar

After a disappointing round three exit to USA’s Sabrina Sobhy in Paris, World No.3 El Hammamy will be determined to bounce back in Doha.

The 22-year-old is aiming to add to her 11 career titles to date and gets under way against either Hana Ramadan or Georgia Adderley on the glass court in round two. No.10 seed Olivia Clyne is likely to await her in the last 16 before potential matches against England’s Georgina Kennedy and Gohar.

Joelle King

Joelle King in action.

World No.4 Joelle King comes into the Qatar Classic having reached the quarter-finals, but there may well be some disappointment with that result given she boasted a two-lead against Amanda Sobhy in the last eight – before the American pulled off a superb comeback to knock the New Zealander out.

King has won 16 titles over her career and should she reach the quarter-finals, it will be the 500th PSA match of her career.

King is set to play the winner between Kenzy Ayman and Jasmine Hutton in the second round and could play the dangerous Belgian Tinne Gilis in the last 16. A mouthwatering quarter-final with Nour El Tayeb could then act as a precursor to a semi-final battle with El Sherbini.

Amanda Sobhy

women's tour qatar

USA No.1 Amanda Sobhy made a positive start to the new season with a semi-final in Paris.

Her win over New Zealand’s King saw her achieve a better position than her No.7 seeding would have indicated, but the next task for the American is to start getting more consistent wins on the board against the Egyptian top three women – with her title challenge in Paris unravelling at the hands of Gohar.

A second round match against either Zeina Mickawy or Salma Eltayeb awaits Sobhy and she is again seeded to play Gohar in the last eight.

women's tour qatar

World No.1 Ali Farag secured his first tournament win of the season at the Paris Squash event.

Farag beat Peruvian Diego Elias in the final to claim silverware in the first Platinum event of the new campaign. The Egyptian has a good track record in Doha, having won the competition twice before in 2018 and 2020.

The 31-year-old suffered a surprise third round defeat to Colombia’s Miguel Rodriguez during last year’s Qatar Classic but will be favourite to take the title this time around. However, he must navigate a tricky draw which contains fellow Egyptians Mohamed Abouelghar, Fares Dessouky and Tarek Momen, who is playing on the same court where he won the 2019-20 PSA World Championships.

If he can make it past Momen, a semi-final clash with World No.5 Paul Coll could await – a repeat of their 96-minute epic in the last four of the Paris Squash.

Diego Elias

Diego Elias celebrates at the CIB PSA World Tour Finals.

Peruvian Diego Elias returns to the scene of his first major tournament win and is in decent form having reached the Paris Squash final.

While he took the first game of the title decider against Farag, he eventually went down in four games.

The World No.2 has good memories of Doha having captured his maiden Platinum title with a win over New Zealand’s Paul Coll in 2021 and gets under way against either Auguste Dussourd or Qatari wildcard Syed Azlan Amjad in his first match of the tournament.

Matches against Youssef Soliman and Marwan ElShorbagy could follow before a mouthwatering clash with No.3 seed Mohamed ElShorbagy in the last four.

Mohamed ElShorbagy

women's tour qatar

Defending champion Mohamed ElShorbagy returns to Doha for a chance to win the fifth Qatar Classic of his career.

Last time out, the former World No.1 beat Victor Crouin after four games to earn his fourth Qatar Classic trophy and his first since his switch of allegiance from Egypt to England in the summer of 2022.

The upcoming event in Qatar will give ElShorbagy the chance to win his 50th PSA title and he will meet either Charlie Lee or Gregoire Marche in round two. Should he win that match, he is likely to come up against Frenchman Baptiste Masotti, with further matches against Mazen Hesham and Elias to come should matches go to seeding.

Paul Coll celebrates his semi-final victory against Ali Farag in Canary Wharf

World No.5 Paul Coll has yet to win a title in Doha, despite reaching back-to-back finals in 2020 and 2021 and reaching the final of the PSA World Championships in 2019.

He went down in a narrow five-game clash with Farag in the semi-final stage of the Paris Squash and has a tricky start against World No.9 Joel Makin in store as he looks to improve on last year’s shock second round defeat to Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi.

Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi

women's tour qatar

The Qatari No.1 had a strong competition in last year’s Qatar Classic, beating Coll in a 94-minute thriller.

The local player then continued his impressive run with a win over Englishman George Parker in the third round, becoming the first Qatari player to reach the quarter-finals of a Platinum event. His run eventually came to an end against eventual finalist Crouin.

The Doha-born athlete is set to start the tournament in round one against Lucas Serme on the glass court and is seeded to reach the third round, where he will take on former World Champion Momen.

American women get season underway in Tour of Qatar

Olds, small, and barensfeld debut new team colors in doha this week.

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

DOHA (VN) — The women’s road season is underway this week at the Ladies Tour of Qatar, where Americans Carmen Small, Shelley Olds, and Anna Barensfeld are debuting new team colors.

“I’m here with good form to try to get a good result for the team,” Olds, who is making her first start with Tibco-To the Top, told VeloNews . “Qatar is really important, it’s one of the highest category stage races, it’s organized well along with the men, and we get the same media attention. Plus, this year it’s four days long. When a lot of races are going away, they’ve added days in Qatar.”

Olds, a former World Cup and Giro Donne stage winner, arrived with the intention to win a stage or place well in the GC.

Her new teammate Barensfeld will help Olds while gaining experience.

“It’s my first time to be racing internationally. I was pleasantly surprised with my ability to move around in the pack and I felt like I belonged here,” Barensfeld said. “The crosswinds were something that was new to me; we don’t have so much wind in the U.S. The biggest thing is to be aware of when it’s going to happen and making sure we don’t get caught out.”

Kirsten Wild (Argos-Shimano) won Wednesday’s stage north of Doha in Al Khor. She sprinted from a nine-rider escape that formed under the pressure of Orica-AIS and high winds. Small finished in the first chase group. Tibco’s Americans were further back.

Tibco is one of 15 teams racing the fifth edition of the Qatari tour. Last year, the team won the U.S. national championship road race with Megan Guarnier (departed to Rabo Women) and placed Lauren Hall second overall in the Giro Toscana. The team beefed up for 2013, adding Olds, Claudia Häusler, and others.

“I’m happy to be in this team; there’s a lot of experience with Claudia Häusler, Shelly, Jo Kiesanowski, Chantal Blaak… there’s so much to learn from them,” said Barensfeld. “Even just yesterday, we talked about what I can do better, I can improve on this and that, and that’s going to happen throughout the season.”

Small is in Doha for the second time. She raced here in 2011 and crashed on day one, which called for 20 stitches in her right arm. Velo’s 2012 Domestic Stage Racer of the Year nearly called an end to her career late last year, but Specialized-lululemon called.

“I was going to retire after last year and then I had this offer. How can you turn this down?” she said. “It’s a great program … My goal is just to be a part of the team and help.”

The women’s peloton travels to Europe after Qatar for the spring classics. The stage race holds an important place in the calendar as many races are struggling or pulling the brakes completely. The late January tilt gives riders an opportunity fly their new team colors in the warm, windy desert, putting valuable racing kilometers in their legs before the one-day races kick of in the cold north.

“Qatar is great since it seems like our schedules are getting less and less,” Small said. “It’s great when another race like Qatar pops up. This year, the organizer added a fourth day. Anything we can get helps. And there’s live TV coverage.”

Olds, for one, will look to take advantage of the TV coverage when the race continues on Thursday with the 112km third stage from Al Thakhira to Madinat Al Shamal.

The Definitive Female Solo Travellers Guide to Qatar in 2022

Luxurious Magazine

Qatar was recently ranked the safest country globally, and its capital city, Doha, is the second safest city in the world by Numbeo Index 2022, making it an ideal holiday destination for female travellers in search of a solo holiday destination trip abroad.

Qatar is an incredibly safe country for female travellers and offers unforgettable tours with friendly guides, some beautiful, walkable neighbourhoods, relaxing hotel pools and an array of delicious dining options. For this guide, the country’s official tourism office has shared with us some of the experiences that await female travellers who are planning a visit in 2022.

Qatar is jam-packed with culture ready to be discovered

Guided tours & excursions There are plenty of tours available on sand, sea, and land for solo travellers in Qatar. Discover Qatar is a popular local tour operator which offers everything from neighbourhood tours and water sports excursions to airport transfers and theme park entry.

One of the best tours for discovering the capital’s unique neighbourhoods is Discover Doha, a four-hour tour with an expert tour guide that takes in Downtown Doha, Souq Waqif, The Pearl-Qatar and Katara Cultural Village. All of Discover Qatar’s expert guides are licensed and English-speaking.

The Sharq Village Spa

Wellness retreats Qatar is the perfect destination for relaxation and rejuvenation , whether you’re booking an individual spa treatment or a multi-day wellness retreat. Recently opened wellness destination, Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som, is a fully immersive resort located in the northern part of the country, with retreat programmes available from three to 14 nights.

An aerial view of the Banana Island Resort

The resort has an emphasis on improving diet and nutrition, promoting physical activity and stress resistance and enhancing sleep quality. Solo travellers should also try out the exclusive Banana Island Resort by Anantara (above), which is set on a private island surrounded by turquoise lagoons. In addition, a visit to Sharq Village & Spa, one of the biggest and most luxurious spas in the country with 23 treatment rooms and four spa areas, should also be on the itinerary.

Walkable neighbourhoods The country has a number of pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods that are perfect for solo travellers to explore. The Venetian-inspired streets of Qanat Quartier in The Pearl-Qatar are an Instagram haven, with pastel-coloured buildings, scenic canals and a wide choice of boutique shops and restaurants.

Nearby, Katara Cultural Village is home to exceptional museums and art galleries, intriguing architecture, as well as a scenic public beach with sun loungers and watersports. As well as on foot, visitors can hop on a free cart that can transport them around the village.

The B-Lounge at the Ritz-Carlton

Dining options Whether dining in the comfort of your hotel or enjoying the local cuisine at the bustling Souq Waqif, there are myriad dining options for solo travellers to explore. The diversity of the country’s population is showcased through its culinary offering, from budget street food to high-end dining.

Those looking to meet other female travellers, or meet up with a group of friends, can enjoy Doha’s unforgettable ladies’ nights, which are hosted across numerous hotels in the city. The Ritz-Carlton Doha has a wide range of dining options; visitors can choose between steak at STK Doha, French-inspired dishes at Sel & Miel, or Asian fusion cuisine at B-Lounge.

A couple of the fantastic places to go shopping in the country

Shopping excursions Travellers can spend hours wandering around Doha with its spectacular shopping malls that offer everything from theme parks to famous retail stores.

To save you looking it up o the internet, a luxurious shopping destination, Villaggio Mall, on the outskirts of Doha and is one of the capital’s most Instagram-friendly malls, with an indoor canal complete with gondolas, as well as high-end boutiques, world-class retail and an incredible selection of dining options.

Qatar is also set to welcome Place Vendome this spring, a luxury shopping mall inspired by Parisian architecture which will be home to some of the most prestigious international brands.

TOP TRAVEL TIPS:

  • Dress code: Qatar is relatively relaxed around dress, although it’s recommended that both men and women cover their shoulders and knees when out and about in public places. Many hotels offer a more relaxed dress code in and around the hotel and the pool area.
  • Getting around: There are several modes of transport in Qatar that make it easy for solo travellers to get around. The recently opened Metro system is a cost-effective way of getting around Doha, with a women-only carriage during peak hours and a dedicated family zone.

Visiting Qatar as a Woman for the 2022 World Cup? Read THIS first

Dress code in qatar and everything else you need to know for the 2022 world cup..

It may appear strange that a man is writing an article about visiting Qatar as a woman. However, I lived in Qatar for many years, and during that time, my wife, as well as other female family members and friends, visited me numerous times. This article is based on their observations.

The goal is to dispel some of the misconceptions that foreigners (particularly Westerners) have about tourism in this Middle Eastern country, particularly in relation to the 2022 World Cup hosted in Qatar.

Some of what I’m about to tell you may seem shocking at first, but for anyone who has lived there, they are as normal as it gets.

If you are not a woman, check our special article about how dangerous is Qatar .

Dress code in Qatar

Qatar is an Islamic country, and the Qataris dress in a highly traditional manner.

For foreigners, although there is no formal dress code, it is advised to dress modestly and conservatively. This means no shorts for males and no miniskirts or tank tops for ladies.

Normal swimmers, including bikinis, are fine on the beach or by the pool (until some years ago, bikinis were allowed only on Public beaches and still they may draw attention). It is prohibited for women to sunbathe topless.

When visiting public locations like parks, malls, or souq areas, especially those frequented by people of various nationalities, it is essential to be especially mindful of the dress code.

Qatari ladies often cover their hair with a black headdress called shayla and their bodies with a black garment called abaya . Some women also cover their faces by using a niqab .

If I am visiting Qatar as a woman, Do I have to wear an abaya in Qatar?

Girl using Abaya. The Abaya is the basic dress code for women from Qatar, but foreigners don't need to wear it.

No, tourists are not required to dress in the way of the Qataris.

Shorts, skirts above the knee and sleeveless/short sleeves are not permitted when visiting mosques or government facilities. When visiting mosques, you will also need to cover your hair. In any public place, women should avoid wearing spaghetti-strap or see-through shirts and short skirts.

Regarding the temperature, spectators of the 2022 Fifa World Cup need not fear since the weather and temperatures are mild in November and December, owing to the cool desert air.

Typical daytime temperatures are approximately 24 degrees Celsius, while nighttime temperatures are around 18 degrees Celsius. It’s wise to bring light coats and cardigans, and it won’t hurt to keep a hat and pair of gloves on hand when you’re out and about in Qatar during these times.

There are lots of shopping malls in Qatar where you may buy just about whatever you need, especially clothes to wear for the duration of your visit.

Can you hold hands in Qatar?

Male and female holding hands is tolerated. Lots of couples hold hands everywhere. Banks, hospitals, restaurants, malls, and other public places. Most of them are married couples, but nobody really checks that.

It is also common to see men holding hands in Qatar, especially Indian immigrants, but that does not have any sexual connotation.

So, bottom line: a couple can hold hands in Doha.

Can women drive in Qatar?

Yes. People used to ask this question due to confusion with neighboring Saudi Arabia, where until recently , women were not allowed to drive. If you are looking to rent a car in Qatar, I recommend this website .

Can you drink alcohol in Qatar?

True, but not everywhere and not for everyone. Alcohol is mostly available in bars, hotels, and restaurants. It is not available in regular supermarkets or grocery stores. Furthermore, not everyone is permitted to consume alcohol (although tourists probably will have no issues). I detailed this matter in this article about the booze question during the 2022 World Cup .

Is Doha similar to Dubai?

From the outside, Doha may appear to be a smaller, less boisterous, and less tourist-centered version of Dubai. Here I listed some nice things to do in Qatar .

However, from the perspective of an insider or a resident, as I was, they are considerably different. Dubai is less restrictive in many ways and offers more entertainment options. In fact, it was common for western foreigners living in Doha to visit Dubai for additional entertainment options.

Other tips for women visiting Qatar

1st — If you are visiting the city for just a day, there are plenty of options in terms of luggage storage, so you don’t need to walk around with your carry-on bags. Reliable, convenient, and inexpensive luggage storage services you can find at  Radical Storage .

2nd — Book a transfer in advance from the Ezeiza or Aeroparque airport (or from any station) to your destination and vice versa, so you can avoid scammers and illegal drivers. I often used  Get Transfer  for that and it always worked fine.

3rd — If you want to walk around and see some beautiful spots without the risk of getting lost, hire a guide. You can find some  amazing and reliable guides and tours at Viator . They will give you insider information about historical facts and curiosities, and also warn you of risky areas and keep you safe.

Is Doha safe for females? Conclusion about visiting Qatar as a woman.

Women in Qatar. Rules for women in Qatar are not as strict as in Saudi Arabia, but not as loose as in the United Arab Emirates

Yes, Doha is safe for female tourists. In fact, Qatar is among the safest countries in the World , unless you consider road accidents, which are common there.

Women visiting Qatar should have no problem during the 2022 World Cup if they follow the same guidelines that common sense dictates everywhere else in the world, plus some extra consideration for the local culture, such as not getting drunk in the middle of a public park or beach, or not wearing transparent tops.

While I was living there, my wife came to see me several times, and the only thing that ever happened was that when we went to a museum , at the entrance they offered her an extra blanket to cover her shoulders.

During other months (eg: Ramadan ), the rules in Qatar are much stricter. You cannot eat or drink water in public during the day, for example. Once I forgot that already was Ramadan and I got warned about drinking water outside. The dress code is also much more rigid.

But the World Cup will not happen during Ramadan, therefore, tourists can expect a certain level of tolerance from the local authorities.

Have a good travel, and enjoy the Fifa World Cup 🙂

Ps: In this article, I only wrote about the rules. It does not mean that I agree or disagree with any of them.

Jennifer Lopez’s Canceled Tour, and Society’s Twisted Pleasure in Seeing Strong Women Fail

Jennifer Lopez Variety Cover Story

For a variety of reasons, one of the biggest stories in entertainment this year has been the precarious state of Jennifer Lopez ’s “This Is Me… Now” tour, which was finally put out of its misery yesterday.

Related Stories

Live music blues: are black keys, jennifer lopez just the beginning, viggo mortensen asked peter jackson if he could use aragorn's sword in a new movie, says he'd star in new 'lord of the rings' movie only 'if i was right for the character', popular on variety.

Just a few days earlier, another major act canceled their own overly ambitious North American tour that was scheduled to hit many of the same arenas that J-Lo’s was — the male rock duo the Black Keys. After that news broke, people asked what that said about the state of the touring business.

But when J. Lo canceled her tour just days later, people asked what it says about her.

As a society, why do we do that?

Broadly speaking, the reasons for both cancellations are the same: An artist past their commercial prime makes an overly optimistic projection about the response to their new project, gets it wrong, and pays the price — as do their partners in the enterprise, from promoters and venues down to dancers and truck drivers, because it takes a village to put on a tour of that size, and literally hundreds of people’s livelihoods are affected by those cancelations (which is something conveniently forgotten in the thinly veiled glee much of the public seems to take in such missteps).

Granted, the pop audience that J-Lo is targeting is very different from the more-loyal, less-fickle rock fans the Black Keys were aiming at. The pop world that J-Lo inhabits has the attention span of a smart fish and is infamously unforgiving of perceived transgressions, which can span from intentional factors — like a romantic partner who fans decide they don’t like — to unintended ones like, say, a multifaceted, self-absorbed autobiographical project by someone who famously is not the world’s kindest or most gracious superstar. For all her Bronx toughness and swagger, J-Lo has always been a pop artist and she knows that game and everything that comes with it.

But fame and power put people at a remove from reality, and it’s ultimately irrelevant whether everyone in her orbit also thought this project and tour were a great idea, or whether no one dared to say, “Hey, after the disastrous failure of ‘Gigli’” — the dreadful 2003 Affleck-Lopez film that not only destroyed the pair as a commercial property, but also helped tank the first era of their relationship — “maybe reviving Bennifer as a commercial enterprise isn’t a great idea?” The end result was the same: a canceled tour and a stiff album. Artists make similar miscalculations every year.

Yet the online venom and hateration that has surrounded the failure of this enterprise has been epic in scale. The term schadenfreude — a combination of the German nouns Schaden, meaning “damage” or “harm,” and Freude, meaning “joy,” per Merriam-Webster — means taking pleasure, often illogical pleasure, in others’ misfortune. And while men certainly can be victims of it — does anyone remember Martin Shkreli and his unusually punchable face ? — society certainly seems to reserve the worst of its venom for powerful, successful, talented women.

It’s a matter of public record that women’s rights are under ferocious attack, from Iran, Afghanistan and Russia to the United States and our arguably corrupt Supreme Court, multiple state governments and even Benedictine College’s commencement . But the hate isn’t coming exclusively from men. At a certain point, we decide we don’t like a public figure anymore without really knowing — or at least without consciously thinking about — why.

Except subconsciously, it’s probably not that deep. Sometimes we just don’t like or get tired of someone’s face (cf. Shkreli, who never had a chance), sometimes we resent their success, sometimes we also resent their happiness, or at least their seeming flaunting of it. In the wider public eye, J-Lo seems to have run afoul of the latter two, and the rumors that she and Affleck may be separating after less than two years of marriage seem an almost inevitable final act before a (probably equally inevitable) redemption chapter, after everyone finally realizes how unfair they were (cf. Britney Spears).

This is a road that Beyonce also went down at the peak of her career. She (apparently) shared the challenges that her own marriage was facing — and intensified her already-deep connection with her audience — in the lyrics of her galvanizing “Lemonade” album and tour… but then made a sort of happy-ending follow-up with her 2018 duet album with husband Jay-Z, “Everything Is Love,” which landed well initially but in retrospect is self-indulgent, treacly and awkwardly self-congratulatory: It’s just hard to have much empathy for two near-billionaires singing about how difficult it was coming through the fire. Their ruling status — and the fact that people are genuinely afraid of their fanbases — enabled them to dodge the storm that usually follows such hubris.

J-Lo, as we’re seeing, hasn’t dodged those bullets. At 54, she’s at a tricky point in a pop star career: Hit singles for artists at that age are as rare as Bigfoot sightings — Cher’s “Believe” and Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam,” the two main examples that come to mind, were released more than a quarter-century apart — and only generationally defining stars with enormous catalogs of hits, like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel can tour arenas into retirement age. What’s missing from that category? Women. Most of the top-grossing female touring artists — Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Pink — are under 45. The only one who isn’t, Madonna, at 65 played to some middling audiences on her just-completed, mostly triumphant “Celebration” tour, as well as an estimated 1.6 million people at the final concert in Brazil. She’s weathered all of the above storms — and then some — and come out on top, but it’s taken hurricane-force, once-in-a-generation level of determination (and probably has taken quite a personal toll as well).

Variety pursued the reports of J. Lo’s poor ticket sales — and those of the Black Keys and others —aggressively, not for reasons of schadenfreude but because such stories are important in our corner of the media world, and it’s a sad fact of our business that bad news gets a lot more clicks than good news. Her fans swarmed on us, which comes with the turf, but the stories were hugely successful. As it does every time schadenfreude piles up on a female public figure, I was reminded of something: During the heyday of Lena Dunham’s TV series “Girls,” there was a video meme — or whatever passed for a meme in 2012 — of young women making comical, snarky opinions about show, with one of them saying, “I’ve never seen it… but I think I don’t like it.”

It was a joke, but still, that statement seems like a sadly perfect distillation of the amount of thought, let alone logic, that goes into the kind of hateration that J. Lo and so many other female public figures are receiving right now. It’s also not hard to imagine that syndrome playing a major role in many other successful women being brought down a peg after a majority of people decide they just don’t like her, not least the defeat of Hillary Clinton by her unapologetically misogynist opponent in 2016.

J. Lo is a great artist and she will be fine, and she’s clearly tough enough to weather all of this. But why should she have to? There’s obviously more going on here than just a canceled tour, and it does make one wonder whether the guilty pleasure of schadenfreude and our role in furthering it is a problem that goes beyond a few “harmless” clicks.

Tour of Britain Women: Lotte Kopecky takes back-to-back wins on stage 2 ahead of Henderson

World Champion beats Anna Henderson in two-up sprint into Wrexham with Lorena Wiebes taking third

How it unfolded

Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) doubled up at the Tour of Britain Women, winning stage 2 in a sprint of two riders against Anna Henderson (Great Britain). Kopecky's teammate Lorena Wiebes won the sprint of a reduced peloton for third place.

On Horseshoe Pass, Kopecky attacked 1km from the top and Henderson was the only rider able to hold the GC leader's wheel. They built a 40-second gap on the rolling terrain after the climb, and although Liv-AlUla-Jayco and DSM-Firmenich PostNL organised the chase in the group behind, the two leaders came onto the finishing straight with 20 seconds in hand.

Henderson sat on Kopecky's wheel from the flamme rouge but had no reply to the World Champion's sprint in the end.

Kopecky defends the green leader's jersey and is now 17 seconds ahead of Henderson and 34 seconds ahead of Letizia Paternoster (Liv-AlUla-Jayco) going into stage 3.

“Yesterday it was really close, today it was nice to be in the break with Anna [Henderson] and to finish it off in the sprint,” said Kopecky after her second consecutive victory.

“I did a recon of the finish this morning, so I knew what was coming. I kind of expected it [Henderson staying in her wheel] already. It was not a disadvantage to start from the lead, so I didn’t mind."

The 140.1km stage started and finished in Wrexham, doing a loop through Cheshire before returning to Wales. The main difficulty of the day was the Horseshoe Pass climb, 4.2km at an average gradient of 6.4%, cresting with 26.6km to go.

Franzi Koch (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) went on a solo breakaway early on and was almost four minutes ahead of the peloton. She won the first QOM sprint on Eyton Hill and the intermediate sprint in Johnstown, but by that time her advantage had shrunk to 1:26 minutes, and Koch was caught with 36km to go.

Christine Majerus (SD Worx-Protime) set a hard pace on Horseshoe Pass, reducing the peloton to about 30 riders, and then Kopecky made her move.

Paternoster jumped on Kopecky’s wheel, and Henderson followed, but Paternoster soon realised she couldn’t keep the pace and dropped back. Henderson went around her to Kopecky’s rear wheel, and the two riders crested the climb with a 15-second advantage. Lizzie Deignan (Great Britain) defended the blue QOM jersey by leading the next group over the top.

A chase group of 13 riders formed where Pfeiffer Georgi (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) tried to find allies to assist her teammate Abi Smith in the chase. Although Margot Vanpachtenbeke (VolkerWessels) and Dilyxine Miermont (St Michel-Mavic-Auber 93) joined in, the gap grew to 38 seconds at the 15km mark as Kopecky and Henderson made good use of the twisting descent.

Kopecky tried to drop Henderson with an attack on a short rise with 11km to go, but the British rider doggedly held her wheel, and the two riders settled into a rhythm again until they reached Wrexham.

In the meantime, the chase group had grown to 21 riders, and Amber Pate (Liv-AlUla-Jayco) was chasing hard in service of Paternoster, but with 20 seconds still left to the front, Kopecky and Henderson would sprint for the victory.

Trying to maximise her chances, Henderson refused to take over on the final kilometre, but Kopecky steadily cranked up the speed on Chester Street and easily held off Henderson to win the stage. 20 seconds later, Wiebes won the sprint for third place.
