What Happens When a Concert Tour Is Canceled? An Insurance Expert Answers the Million-Dollar Question

An insurance expert answers burning questions about what happens when an artist cancels a tour

  • Amid a slew of concert cancellations, an insurance expert answers questions about what happens to all the money at stake
  • Cancellations due to things out of an artist's control, like medical reasons, are typically covered
  • Insurance will cover typically between 75 and 80% of the guaranteed fee that the promoter was paying the artist

In late May, The Black Keys announced that they’d be pumping the brakes on their upcoming North American tour, and planned to offer fans a more “intimate experience” than the arenas they’d had planned. Then, days later, Jennifer Lopez announced the cancellation of her This Is Me…Live tour , saying she was taking time off to be with her family and friends.

The canceled tour phenomenon is not now; over the last few years, major music players have either canceled shows or rescheduled, from Aerosmith and Madonna to Bruce Springsteen , Heart and the Jonas Brothers .

When a show is canceled, artists and their promoters (including industry titans like Live Nation Entertainment and AEG Presents) will often tell fans that the money they spent on their ticket will automatically be refunded — but what happens to the rest of the money?

According to Paul Bassman, managing director at Higginbotham Insurance, artists and their teams purchase cancellation insurance policies ahead of major tours to protect the artist from financial harm should the tour be canceled.

These policies are generally deemed "all risk" policies, meaning they cover cancellations for just about any reason, other than what is expressly excluded.

Related: Jennifer Lopez Cancels Tour to Spend Time with Her Family and Friends: 'I Am Completely Heartsick'

“Generally speaking, it’s cancellations that are within your control that are covered,” he explains to PEOPLE. “Personal reasons would not typically be a covered cause of loss, unless that personal reason was the sickness or illness or death of a close family member that was either named on the policy, or included in what’s called a family extension endorsement.”

Medical reasons and family emergencies are typically covered — but canceling a show due to low ticket sales is not. Still, when it comes to concerts, insurance will cover typically between 75 and 80% of the guaranteed fee that the promoter was paying the artist.

“They typically limit the amount that you’re able to cover under their policy so the artist is not putting themselves in a better position than they would’ve been otherwise,” he says. “They ensure a percentage of the guarantees for sickness, illness, death, God forbid, or whatever reason that wouldn’t be excluded under the policy. The insurance proceeds are what pays for the dancers and the production and the buses that you’ve already leased out, and the planes you’ve already rented, or whatever it may be. That all comes out of that pot of money that’s given to you by the insurance carriers.”

But what insurance doesn’t cover doesn’t necessarily come out of the artists’ pocket. Though contracts differ, Live Nation or another promoter would typically be the one to eat some costs — but things vary.

“For the most part, if the show is canceled, then you go your own ways and cover your own expenses,” he says. “There could be a provision in there that says if it’s canceled within 30 days of the show, then you have to cover our expenses. But it’s all just depending on the agreement with the promoter.”

Sometimes, Bassman says, promoters will cut their losses if a show is not selling well, opting to take a kill fee in order to save money in the long run.

“If I had $50 million in guarantees out on an artist and the tour is selling miserably and I could get out of it for $10 to $15 million, yeah, I think that’s a good idea,” he says. “It’s going to be painful, but it’s better than $50 [million].”

Bassman, who says a “huge part” of his business is festival cancellation insurance, says in his personal experience, he’s seen cancellations with losses of “tens of millions” of dollars. He cites blues musician Joe Bonamassa as another example. Bonamassa’s tour was canceled because of COVID, and because the exclusion for “communicable disease” had been removed from his contract, he received $4.4 million in insurance money from the canceled tour, a sum based on what his estimated revenue was going to be.

Though it may be a pain for a venue to deal with a last-minute cancellation, it’s not always the end of the world. Sometimes the venue and the promoter agree to a partnership, where they’ll each take the loss and the gain equally, and other times, they’ll simply rent the space for a flat, non-refundable fee.

Related: Heart Cancels European Tour as Ann Wilson Must Have 'Time-Sensitive but Routine Medical Procedure'

“[Sometimes] the venue’s like, ‘You’re paying us $100,000, $200,000 or whatever the rental fee is, you’re paying us this much no matter what, non-refundable.’ [Upon cancellation] the venue might just be like, ‘Eh, we’re dark tonight. Big deal. We got paid,’” says Bassman.

Still, the venue would lose ancillaries, like parking and concessions. A Wall Street Journal report from October estimated that a sudden cancellation could cost an arena an estimated $500,000 in revenue, while a canceled stadium show could cost $1 million or more.

As for how it’s decided where an artist will play on tour, whether it be small theaters or larger arenas, that’s a collaboration between the artist’s manager, booking agent and promoter.

“They collectively decide what size room they’re going to play, what the ticket price is going to be, and where it’s going to play and all that,” he says. “It’s like throwing a dart — sometimes you get it right, sometimes you get it wrong.”

Jennifer Lopez cancels 2024 tour This Is Me: 'Completely heartsick and devastated'

mylenium tour concert

Jennifer Lopez has canceled her summer North American tour , which was to be her first in five years, weeks before she was scheduled to go on the road.

The pop star made the announcement Friday in her On The JLo fan newsletter.

"Representatives for Live Nation announced today that the Jennifer Lopez US Summer 2024 Tour 'THIS IS ME...LIVE' is canceled, citing ... 'Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,'" the newsletter reads.

The statement was followed by a personal note , "A Special Message to My JLovers OnTheJLo."

"I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again," Lopez wrote. "I love you all so much. Until next time..."

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

USA TODAY has reached out to Live Nation for comment.

Lopez's first show of the tour had been slated for June 26 in Orlando, Florida.

This Is Me... Live announcement comes after seven tour dates were canceled

The announcement comes weeks after several shows on the tour were canceled without explanation. According to Ticketmaster, Lopez's scheduled performances in Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans; Raleigh, North Carolina; Atlanta; Houston; Cleveland and Tampa, Florida would no longer take place.

"Unfortunately, the event organizer has had to cancel your event," the message for those pages reads.

This is Me...Live was a 30-date arena tour that was going to feature Lopez's chart-breakers and classic hits from her discography, like songs "On The Floor," "Let's Get Loud" and "Jenny from the Block." Her most recent tour in 2019, the It's My Party tour, sold out venues across the country.

The tour was in support of her new album, “This is Me … Now,” which released in February. The record was accompanied by an Amazon Prime musical movie, “ This is Me … Now: A Love Story ."

Speaking to USA TODAY earlier this year about "This is Me ... Now" possibly being her swan song, Lopez said, "This was going to be the quintessential thing I have been searching for and wanted to say about love."

"I’ve been on this search for so long, since people first met me and my first record came out and even before that in my first movie role, where I’ve been on this journey trying to figure this thing out for myself. This (album) kind of closed the loop in a way,” she said. “It captures this moment to really say the things I want to say about love, and that is that true love does exist and some things are forever. Please don’t give up on that because that’s all that matters in life … love.”'

Bennifer timeline: Their love story spans two decades, two engagements

Separate outings have fueled speculation about marriage with Ben Affleck

Lopez's announcement also comes amid widespread speculation about her marriage of nearly two years to Ben Affleck.

After various media reports suggested Lopez and Affleck may no longer be living together, the Hollywood A-List couple has been increasingly under the microscope, with media prying over their whereabouts and whether both are still wearing their rings.

On May 16, Lopez and Affleck were photographed together for the first time in over a month, with each spotted wearing their respective wedding rings.

The two were engaged to each other twice: first in 2002 then again in 2021. The couple got married in a late-night ceremony in Las Vegas on July 16, 2022, which Lopez called "the best possible wedding we could have imagined."

This is the second marriage for Affleck and the fourth for Lopez.

Why Buddy Guy is retiring from the road: 'Cheating people' isn't his way

As he nears a chicago blues festival set that may be one of his last, the 87-year-old master says he never wants to be a faltering artist who’s ‘not giving people what they paid for.’.

Buddy Guy (pictured in Louisville, Kentucky, in September) has concert dates booked all summer — including an Aug. 9 performance at Rivers Casino in Des Plaines — and intends to keep up his January residencies at his South Loop club Legends.

Amy Harris/Invision/AP

It’s almost the end of the road for Buddy Guy. In 2022, the blues guitarist announced the extensive Damn Right Farewell Tour, which will soon put an end cap on the incredible seven decades the nearly 88-year-old virtuoso has dedicated to traversing the country, igniting audiences 130-plus times a year with his quick and nimble electric picking that, he says, has all been in an effort “to keep the blues alive.”

“I promised all of the older guys who are no longer here with me that I’d always try,” Guy adds, referencing such blues godfathers as Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and B.B. King.

His Sunday night performance closing out the Chicago Blues Festival will bring him back to the event where he has logged so many milestone moments, from the ”Super Chicago Guitar Jam” in 1988 where Guy huddled with Otis Rush, Son Seals Blues Band and Koko Taylor and her Blues Machine, to his tribute to B.B. King shortly after King’s passing in 2015.

“When you get to a certain age — you know, I remember watching all the guys who I learned everything from, the older they got, they’d forget songs, and you’re not giving people what they paid for,” Guy says of his decision to wrap up his illustrious touring career. He cautions it won’t be the last time he graces a Chicago stage; his long-running January residencies at his South Loop club Legends will continue, and he may do festivals in the future, as health and time permits. It’s just a matter of quality over quantity at this point.

“I don’t want to go out there every night and can’t do what I used to do because who can do what you could do at 22, and now you damn near 92? I think I’d be cheating people, so that’s what got me doing this.”

  • PBS doc traces how Chicago changed Buddy Guy, and how Buddy Guy changed the world

His playing is still an epic masterclass that begs near genuflection. Even so, Guy says, he’s paid his dues. “I’ve been working since I was picking cotton at 6 years old … so I’ve been working a long time.”

Born in 1936 to sharecroppers, Guy spent his earliest years on a plantation in the tiny town of Lettsworth, Louisiana, and made his own first DIY guitar at 7 years old using string, wood and hairpins from his mother to keep it taut. After he logged time playing in Baton Rouge, Chicago came calling. “I came [to Chicago] because, in Baton Rouge there was no cover charge, no blues clubs. But I learned that [in Chicago], a bottle of beer was 25 cents and it was 35 cents if Muddy Waters was in the house playing, and that’s how he got paid.”

Even after his move in 1957, things didn’t take off at first. Even though Guy was soon recording with Waters and Howlin’ Wolf at the legendary Chess Records, blues was still a major underdog, and Guy was driving a tow truck during the day to make ends meet while playing gigs at night.

When the British rock invasion swept in in the ‘60s, however, everything changed. “Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, we were all playing the blues here and it was 99% Black people that listened. But when the British guys started playing — the Beatles, the Stones — white America was saying, ‘Wait a minute …’ ”

Guy recognizes bands like the Rolling Stones (whom he still holds a close friendship with to this day) for giving credit where credit was due.

“There was an [ABC variety] show called ‘Shindig!’ and they were trying to get the Rolling Stones to do the program. Mick Jagger said, ‘I’ll do it if you let me play Muddy Waters,’ ” Guy recalls. “And they said, ‘Who in the hell is that?’ He said, ‘You mean to tell me you don’t know who Muddy Waters is? We named ourselves after his famous record.’ ”

Since then, Guy released countless records (his latest, 2022’s “The Blues Don’t Lie”), nabbing seven Grammy Awards and being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2015 as well as the Presidential National Medal of Arts, among other accolades. In 1989, he opened his long-running Legends blues club on Wabash (after years running the Checkerboard Lounge on the South Side); 35 years later, it’s still going strong.

Brian Jackson/For the Sun-Times

When it comes to the future of the blues, Guy is concerned about where it’s headed as the venerable guitar slingers rest in peace and others, like him, start to retire.

“They [barely] play blues on the radio no more unless you got satellite,” he laments, noting how much Top 40 pop and hip-hop has dominated the landscape.

“I know some hip-hop guys who say, ‘Buddy, if you go on stage and curse a little bit you might sell another album,’ ” he says, laughing. “But a young kid trying to make it, they look at me and say, ‘Why do I want to play blues if ain’t nobody going to hear the record but me?’ ”

There are some glimmers of hope though; Guy was an early champion of the former child savant Quinn Sullivan, and Guy has applauded and recorded with Gary Clark Jr. Regardless of the future, says Guy, “It ain’t going to stop me — I’ll be playing the rest of my life … just to make somebody say it was worth watching him because he gave it the best he got.”

Will travis kelce attend taylor swift's eras tour dates in edinburgh, scotland, share this article.

mylenium tour concert

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift have spent a bunch of time together in recent months despite their busy schedules.

They were in Singapore together during one of her Eras Tour stops, they went on vacation together in the Bahamas, they were snapped at various places together and they attended Patrick Mahomes’ charity event . Then, Kelce showed up to her 87th Eras Tour show in Paris and they had a vacation together in Italy.

Now, Swift continues her international leg of the Eras Tour, so you might wonder: given that Travis has some time off, will he be in Edinburgh for three days to see her perform again?

It sounds like we won’t be seeing Kelce in Scotland, however, as the tight end has agreed to play in David Njoku’s Celebrity Softball Game on Sunday in Ohio.
